Book Review #36 of 2024--
Tumblr media
Woe: A Housecat's Story of Despair by Lucy Knisley. Rating: 4 stars.
Read on June 2nd.
Before I get into the bulk of my review, a quick thank you to NetGalley and the publishers over at Random House Graphic for allowing me access to this ARC in exchange for an honest review. Woe: A Housecat’s Story of Despair is a graphic novel that follows an orange cat named Linney who is just like your own cat. Linney has very specific needs and wants which gives her servants (“owners”) a lot of fun stories about her. Any cat owner will find similarities between their own cats and Linney in fun comic form. Woe: A Housecat’s Story of Despair comes out on July 2nd and is available for preorder now.
Linney is just hilarious. She also speaks in a very specific way that all cat owners can understand. What cat doesn’t sound like a Victorian child in desperate need of aid? I found this so relatable as someone with a 9 year old cat who is just very specific in what she likes and dislikes. I DO wish that there had been a running theme or something to tie all of these comics together throughout the graphic novel. There were some harsh breaks between different situations which I didn’t love.
Otherwise, this was so cute and so sweet (and so sad at the end) and I definitely recommend it for fans of cats, for cat servants, and people who enjoy a good graphic novel/comic.

‘The French have a saying for the time when you’re young and experimenting with your lives and your careers. They call it L’age Licence’And this what Lucy’s book is about. A journal of her travels but also a journey of self discovery.I love Lucy Knisley’s work. This was a real treat.

I'm using @hiveworks' Micro Comic Summer event to expand my creative horizons with an autobiographical comic! This idea has been in my head for a long time, inspired by Lucy Knisley's work and the Secret Loves of Geeks/Geek Girls anthologies.
(Note: shortly after finishing this comic I discovered the term "aegoromantic", which means liking the idea of romance but not wanting it yourself. I'm so happy to know it's not just me who feels like this!)
For the curious, a list of the fictional characters included on each page is under the cut.
Page 1 Panel 2: The Phouka and Eddi from War for the Oaks by Emma Bull Panel 3: (me pretending to be) Tanya from Dance, Tanya by Patricia Lee Gauch; Laura from the Little House series by Laura Ingalls Wilder; Morwen from the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede Page 2 Panel 1: Arrietty and Peagreen from The Borrowers Avenged by Mary Norton Panel 2: Hugo and Anthea from The Unknown Ajax by Georgette Heyer; Csevet and Maia from The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison Panel 3: Vincent (Knotty) from Widdershins by Kate Ashwin Page 3 Panel 5: Aziraphale and Crowley from Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman; Chrestomanci from the series of the same name by Diana Wynne Jones; Moist von Lipwig from Going Postal by Terry Pratchett; Tayse and Senneth from the Twelve Houses series by Sharon Shinn

One more fun thing from this weekend! Before we went to karaoke on friday, a smaller group of us got dinner beforehand for my friend's husband's 40th (he is also my friend? I guess? feels weird to not call him my friend's husband though)
Anyway my friend was struggling on where we should eat and one of her friends suggested going to a private supper club that she was already going to, so that's what we did, and it was SO FUN. It's like going to a dinner party but with no one having to clean up or make a single decision! It was $125 per person and we got 5 or 6 courses, and it was more than I could eat. There was a short rib entree that I barely touched bc the app and fish courses were so good. If you are local it's called Twilight Kitchen and the dinners are like monthly in Rogers Park and you just make a reservation! I would say it's definitely a fair price for the meal. And it's BYOB, which is fun!
ALSO the friend who suggested it was graphic novelist Lucy Knisley, who I've been a fan of for YEARS and YEARS. She made a joke about her mom at the start of dinner and started to explain her mom to me, and I was like, full disclosure, I know this already bc I have read all of your books. My friend was like, Sarah Beth introduced me to your work long before we met in person!! Yes I did! Anyway I fangirled a tiny moment but it was mostly just very normal and now we are going to be friends. I invited her to my birthday party.

Cover reveal!!
Hi tumblr, sorry I forgot you existed for like a year or something lol... 😅
So yeah, FYI for anyone who's read my comic about growing up gay and Orthodox Jewish here or somewhere else online, it's coming out as a physical book Feb 6!!!
You can preorder it here, or at plenty of other websites, or you can of course ask for it at your local comic shop / bookstore, and/or request it at your local library! Any of those would be amazing!!
Here are some really nice things some other cartoonists who've read it have said about it:
“I'm so glad this beautiful, thoughtful book exists for readers who need it; for anyone fighting their way out or searching for a clear path. I can't wait to share it with kids who need it!” —Lucy Knisley, author of Kid Gloves and Relish
“I loved this book! It is for any of us who have been othered by our upbringing. This book lets you know that the journey out is worth it.” —Shelby Criswell, author of Queer As All Get Out
“While the circumstances of growing up in a strict orthodox household are highly individual, the feelings of loneliness and confusion mixed with hope are universal. Read it and remember.” —Rob Kirby, author of Marry Me a Little
“This tenderly-drawn journey of self-definition gave me a peek into a very different world. I loved it.” —Hazel Newlevant, author of No Ivy League
I hope you like it!!! 💖

The Pre-Order for my debut middle grade graphic novel "On Guard!" is now live! Its about Fencing and Divorce and Friendship
Grace is trying to find her footing in 7th grade, but between a best friend break up and her rocky relationship with her mom, it isn’t easy. Is the middle school fencing club the answer to finding her people…and maybe even herself? On guard! Ready? Fence! Grace isn’tready for a new school year. Her best friend Ava dropped her at the end of last year, the dust is still settling from her parents’ messy divorce, and things are not going well between Grace and her mom. Mothers and daughters are always so close in movies. But that’s never been Grace and her mom. So now Grace has no friends, no hobbies (band was Ava’s thing), and home feels even more complicated than school. There’s not a single place Grace can just relax. Until, she sees the school’s fencing club practicing. They look so sure of themselves. So steady. It may not solve everything…but could this be a place Grace can finally belong and be herself? “A great story about a kid finding her footing (and a cool new sport!) despite the shifting sands of divorce.” –Lucy Knisley, New York Times Bestselling creator of Stepping Stones
