9, 24, and 25 for the ask meme?
from this meme
9. Are there any fics you’d love to see but don’t want to write yourself? What are they?
Ooh boy. I mean, there are a lot of things that I'd love to read, but I usually have a specific scenario in mind and I'm not sure anybody else would write that same scenario or use it the way I'd want to, so...this is the real secret reason why I end up cranking out so much fanfiction.
With that said, though, I would be delighted to be able to read this Steve/Nancy/Jonathan bodyswap fic without having to write it myself. Mostly because I'm having some trouble getting actual content for the individual scenes that need to be in it, beyond an overarching idea of what each of the characters has to take away from the experience.
24. Which fic of yours do you wish people would ask about more? Why?
I think that's got to be they never really go away, a crossover between Crimson Peak and Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. So maybe the story itself doesn't have much to it, but! There are so many interesting parallels between Lucille's relationship with Allerdale Hall and Eleanor's with Hill House! I have a lot of thoughts about it!
25. If you could remove one character from [insert fic]’s universe, who would it be? Why?
You didn't specify a fic so uhhhh I'm going to cheat a little bit because I have, in fact, written Murray Bauman out of the kids aren't alright and its sequels. He just...grates on me. I've tried to figure out a way in to his character that would let me write him in a way I can enjoy, in other fics, and I think I've had varying degrees of success, but in this one...there's no need for him, so he's gone and I have zero regrets.

DNC’s Donna Brazile Dedicated Her Book to ‘Patriot’ Seth Rich, Whose Death Made Her Fear for Her Own Life By Max Kutner On 11/6/17 at 11:38 AM
Updated | A new book by Donna Brazile, the former interim chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), has been making headlines for its controversial claims about the 2016 presidential election and the Hillary Clinton campaign. But the provocative points start even before the first chapter, as Brazile reportedly dedicated the book in part to Seth Rich, the DNC staffer whose murder launched a conspiracy theory.
Axios reported on Sunday that the book's dedication reads, “In loving memory of my father, Lionel Brazile Sr.; my beloved sister, Sheila Brazile; my fearless uncles Nat, Floyd, and Douglas; Harlem’s finest, my aunt Lucille; my friend and mentor, David Kaufmann; my DNC colleague and patriot, Seth Rich; and my beloved Pomeranian, Chip Joshua Marvin Brazile (Booty Wipes). I miss y’all.”

Rich, 27, was fatally shot in July 2016 while walking home late at night in Washington, D.C. The police believe the shooting was a robbery gone wrong. But Rich worked for the DNC, and WikiLeaks published thousands of emails from the committee two weeks after his death. That timeline provoked theories that Rich had given the materials to WikiLeaks and that his death was an attempt to stop him from doing so, or to punish him for it.
Media reports had characterized Rich as a low-level staffer, and his parents wrote in an opinion piece for The Washington Post in May, “Those who have suggested that Seth’s role as a data analyst at the DNC gave him access to a wiDonna Brazile, the former interim chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee, at the Democratic National Convention in July 2016. SAUL LOEB/AFP/Getty
Rich appears elsewhere in Brazile’s book, as the Post reported earlier in the weekend. She wrote that Rich’s murder haunted her and that she'd installed surveillance cameras at her home and would keep the blinds in her office window closed so she could not be seen by snipers, according to the Post.
Brazile talked about Rich on ABC News’s This Week with George Stephanopoulos on Sunday. She told the host about her critics: “They don’t know what it was like to be over the DNC during this hacking. They don’t know what it’s like to bury a child. I did: Seth Rich.”
Brazile had spoken publicly about Rich’s death before. In March, she said she was going to an Omaha, Nebraska, synagogue to speak about him. In May, she tweeted, “Seth Rich was a hard worker and proud to be an American. This desire to scar Seth’s legacy to his country and party is shameful.” About two months later, after Fox News published a since debunked story about the case, she tweeted, “Seth was a good soul and look at this shameful act.”
Through spokesman Brad Bauman, the Rich family said in a statement, “Since Seth was murdered, Donna Brazile has been a great friend to the Rich family and has been extremely supportive of the family’s efforts to find Seth’s killers.”
In the book, out Tuesday, Brazile also writes that she weighed the possibility of replacing Clinton as the Democratic presidential nominee with former Vice President Joe Biden, according to the Post. She also reportedly wrote that Clinton’s campaign headquarters seemed “antiseptic, like a hospital,” and that she felt as though the Clinton campaign was treating her like a “slave.” In an excerpt that Politico published on November 2, she wrote about how the Clinton campaign worked out a fundraising agreement with the DNC and exercised control over the party long before Clinton became the nominee.
Former aides to the Clinton campaign have challenged Brazile’s claims. In a November 4 open letter, more than 100 former top aides wrote, “It is particularly troubling and puzzling that she would seemingly buy into false Russian-fueled propaganda, spread by both the Russians and our opponent, about our candidate’s health.”
Brazile was not available for comment through her publisher, Hachette Book Group, or through Georgetown University, where she is a faculty member. The publisher was unavailable to verify the reported wording of the book dedication.
This article has been updated to alter the spelling of the last name of Sheila Brazile, which was misspelled as Brazioutlanle by another media outlet.de trove of emails are simply incorrect.”

California’s ‘jungle primary’: For Dems and GOP, it’s a pretty tame jungle

California’s ‘jungle primary’: For Dems and GOP, it’s a pretty tame jungle
California Democrats dodged the top-two bullet in some nationally watched primary elections this month, grabbing second place and a spot on the November ballot in all 10 of their targeted GOP-held congressional districts.
That’s not surprising: Top two, where the two leading vote-getters advance to the fall campaign, regardless of party, is generally more of a generic bogeyman for Democratic and Republican leaders than the threat implied by its “jungle primary” nickname.
In California’s 53 congressional primaries this year, only two in which Republicans and Democrats were running ended up with one party being frozen out in the Nov. 6 election. Generally speaking, it will be one party versus another party, exactly as it’s been been since California entered the union in 1850.
The intraparty battles are between Republican Rep. Paul Cook of Yucca Valley (San Bernardino County) and former GOP Assemblyman Tim Donnelly in the Eighth District, and Rep. Nanette Diaz Barragán of Hermosa Beach (Los Angeles County) and fellow Democrat Aja Brown in the 44th District.
While the Democratic race isn’t likely to be close —Barragán rolled in the primary, 66 percent to 17 percent — the GOP faceoff is more like what advocates of the top-two primary hoped for when California voters put it in place in 2010.
The Eighth District, which includes Mono, Inyo and most of San Bernardino counties, is so strongly Republican that it’s one of only four GOP-held districts in California that Democrats didn’t target in this year’s House elections. In the old days, whoever took the Republican primary in a district like this was all but guaranteed to win in November. That meant that anyone who didn’t vote in the GOP primary essentially had no say in who was going to represent the district.
Top two changed that. Now, after winning 41 percent to 23 percent in a five-person primary, Cook has to face a fellow Republican in November. That means he will have to appeal to Democrats, independents and everyone else who didn’t vote for a GOP candidate in June.
That can make a difference, as 20-term Democratic Rep. Pete Stark of Fremont found out in 2012. He won the top-two primary that year in a three-candidate field — then lost in November to the second-place primary finisher, fellow Democrat Eric Swalwell, a Dublin councilman.
Both Democratic and Republican leaders hated top two when it was on the ballot in 2010 and they’re just as unhappy about losing that guaranteed spot on the November ballot today.
“It’s terrible,” House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco said in a May news conference.
“I hate the top two,” GOP Rep. Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield, the House majority leader, told the New York Times before the election.
The top-two system “weakens the Democratic Party,” Eric Bauman, the state party’s chairman, said last August. He also promised to make the repeal of top two a priority.
But in a lot of ways, not much has changed under top two: Democrats mostly vote for Democrats and Republicans for Republicans. Single-party general elections tend to happen only in districts where one major party or the other is all but nonexistent.
In the Sixth District, for example, two Democrats, Rep. Doris Matsui of Sacramento and Jrmar Jefferson, will meet in November. But that’s because no Republican filed to run against Matsui.
A pair of Bay Area Democratic congresswomen, Barbara Lee of Oakland and San Jose’s Zoe Lofgren, won’t face a Republican in the fall because both ran unopposed.
Up in the Wine Country, Democratic Rep. Mike Thompson of St. Helena will be challenged by Anthony Mills, who is registered as “No Political Party.” He was one of three NPPs in the race, which did not include a Republican.
Two Los Angeles Democrats, Jimmy Gomez and Lucille Roybal-Allard, are going against Green Party candidates in November because no Republican wanted to run in those overwhelmingly Democratic districts.
So except in the occasional case where there’s a weak incumbent in a district that may be due for a partisan shift — like GOP Rep. Dana Rohrabacher’s 48th District in Orange County — it’s not the minority party that’s usually on the attack.
For nervous incumbents in California, in the top-two world it’s their friends they need to fear, not their foes in the other party.
Deep dives and late takes
President Trump won a huge victory when the Supreme Court upheld his ban on U.S. entry for people from several mostly Muslim countries.
Sen. Kamala Harris edges toward progressives’ call to “abolish ICE,” saying the nation may have to start “from scratch” on the immigration enforcement agency.
President Trump says MS-13 gang members from El Salvador are flooding across the nation’s southern border, but there’s scant evidence to back that up.
An initiative to repeal a state gas-tax increase and vehicle-registration hike that pay for road and bridge repairs has qualified for the November ballot.
Should California go to year-round daylight savings time? A bill on Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk would take the first step.
California cities would be allowed to impose broad rent control under an initiative headed to the fall ballot.
The House has passed a bill that would make it much harder for people to qualify for food stamps. Now attention turns to the Senate.
A poll shows Sen. Dianne Feinstein well ahead in her re-election battle against state Sen. Kevin de León, but a large number of voters haven’t decided which Democrat to support.
The chair of the state Assembly committee that “eviscerated” a net neutrality bill by state Sen. Scott Wiener of San Francisco says he’s being besieged on social media.
Immigrant-rights rallies in several Bay Area cities this weekend highlight the political events calendar.
