So with the high likelihood of humanity trotting its way to impending doom via global climate change in the near future— not to be dramatic or anything—, there is constant buzz across social media and real life on what consumers can do to lessen their carbon footprint. Ditching single use plastics, Meatless Mondays, composting, upcycling, shaming anyone who dares asks for a straw; you get the idea. I try to be environmentally sound where I can, and I began thinking about hair care since as a curly haired person, I end up buying a ton of products, most of it being plastic bottles out the wazoo.

Between conditioners, treatments and stylers, it’s hard to not be wasteful when you want healthy, happy and good-looking hair. But surely there has to be ways to compromise on that waste to have the hair you want, save money, and be kind to the planet. So I looked over the products I own and brands which other folks talk about, and I researched on consumer hacks and DIY methods for sustainable hair care.

The results? Well, let’s break down the three most doable options and their pros and cons.

Switching from Bottles to Bars

Instead of buying bottle after bottle, you can switch your shampoo and conditioner over to bar form. It’s all the same ingredients without any of the plastic. Shampoo and conditioner bars last anywhere from 50 to 80 washes depending on your hair length and frequency of washing. Best of all, they’re great for travel without fussing about liquids accidentally spilling in the rest of your toiletries or TSA’s fussing on the right number of ounces.

One of the best known brands for shampoo and conditioner bars is Lush. This company prides in reducing waste with package-free products, recycled packaging and using the freshest, ethically-sourced ingredients. Not only do they have shampoo and conditioner bars, but their solid hair care products also include oil treatments, henna hair dyes, a styler, and a co-wash. However, most of their products still use sulfates, which doesn’t sit well with most curly haired folks. I still use my Lush shampoo bar on days when I’m super grimy, and thankfully, my hair doesn’t dry out, but I’m careful to not overdo it as a precaution. Certain Lush fragrances can also be overpowering, and because some products are heavy in oils, if you accidentally use too much, you’ll weigh your hair down.

Thankfully, Lush isn’t the only brand on the bar hair care game. Shea Moisture has a small variety of shampoo bars, which I definitely need to try out. JR Liggett’s is another common brand I see popping up alongside Lush, and I’ve seen another called Ethique at Target which I wanna explore more of. You can also make your own shampoo and conditioner bars if you have the time, all the ingredients, and the right recipe. DIY is quite an investment, but if you’re itching for a new project and knowing for sure what’s in your products, the options are there.

However, there are a couple drawbacks to switching to bar form:

1. You can’t replace your whole routine: Aside from Lush, I have yet to see any variety of bar stylers, and I seriously doubt anyone figured out how to compact deep conditioners and gels into bars. Most conditioners can be easily converted into leave-ins, but that’s really it as far as bar hair care goes. So depending on your hair needs, you’ll probably still have buy some plastic containers. And of course, with trying any new products, you may come across items your hair won’t like, and you’ll have to do some trial-and-error to find a cocktail which works for your needs.

2. You have to be diligent to make the bars last: Unlike bottles where you can just leave them on the shower shelves, no big deal, you can’t do that with bars. If left in the shower without proper containers, the bars will slowly dissolve and crumble, stick to the shelves, and, heaven fucking forbid, may become a breeding ground for mold and mildew. The last thing you need is money going down the drain. Just throw down the extra few dollars for bar containers, and you’ll be good to go!

Shower Cap Conundrum

This was the main catalyst for me exploring environmental sustainability in hair care since I use a plastic cap every wash day for deep conditioning. Sometimes I’ll reuse grocery bags when I’m feeling really cheap (and I hoard them under the sink out of habit), but it’s still using plastic week after week. Disposable plastic caps are too easy to go to since they mostly adjust to any size of head with any hair type and length, so we usually don’t think of more eco-friendly alternatives like freaking reusable shower caps. Yeah, the solution is so stupid simple, I don’t know why I haven’t done this sooner.

This requires a bit of research, because a lot of product descriptions don’t want to be specific what material lines the inside of the caps, and you don’t just want to throw on whatever and hope it works. I recommend focusing on products with enough customer reviews to gauge if a certain reusable cap is right for you, especially if you have long or afro-textured hair. I found one from Lulu Beauty through Ulta which seems promising enough, so I have my fingers crossed that it’ll suit my needs and I can stop wasting plastic. Most options I skimmed through in a couple stores range from $5 to $10, maybe $15 to $20 if you want it made out of King Midas’s silver or whatever. And in the long run, I know it’s going to be way cheaper than constantly buying packs of disposable shower caps.

One of the biggest issues in switching over to a reusable cap is that it’s very difficult to find a wide variety of such in most retail stores. That’s when the temptation to just go to Amazon kicks in, and I’m trying to not make that my automatic go-to site for shopping unless absolutely necessary. I don’t like giving Amazon my money as much as the next person, but I’m also a tired millennial without a car who loves convenience and options. Just the little joys of trying to be an ethical consumer in late stage capitalism. It’s worth checking through Ulta or Target or anywhere else first if at all possible. But if Amazon provides the best variety of what you’re looking for, I won’t shame you; I don’t have time for that, and I don’t know your life.

And speaking of companies and ethical consumption, that brings me to my last point…

Support Sustainable Companies & Pressure Others to Follow Suit

Individual choices are fine and dandy, and any little effort we make helps. But to make the biggest impact, we gotta hone in on the companies that genuinely care about environmental sustainability, both in packaging and ingredients.

A lot of major go-to brands for curly hair already have a knack for ethically sourced ingredients and recycled packaging. All of Maui Moisture’s packaging is post-consumer recycled, and some select Shea Moisture packaging is made out of recycled resin. Not Your Mother’s is constantly pushing their Naturals lines to deliver salon quality with 98% naturally derived ingredients. And some brands which focus on solid beauty bars, like JR Liggett’s and Ethique as mentioned earlier, make it a mission to go plastic-free and ethically source all their ingredients

Another brand which sticks out most on environmental sustainability is Love Beauty and Planet. While I only tried out their rose hair mask, I appreciate their intensive dedication to do right for hair care and the planet. They admit their shortcomings and the difficulty to be perfectly sustainable, but they’re always looking for ways to do better with tangible goals in mind. They even recently changed their shampoo formula to sulfate-free! If you haven’t seen their website or social media on their sustainability goals, I definitely recommend doing so.

The fun thing about beauty companies is that they pay attention to demographic shifts, and they will do everything to target certain consumers to guarantee higher profits. Fenty Beauty starts off with 50 shades of foundation, which includes dark skin tones? Time to broaden the variety of foundations! Curly hair folks lean towards sulfate and silicone free formulas? Change up the formulas and throw in natural extracts!

Garnier Fructis is one of those brands really itching for the curly hair market by shifting towards more natural formulas without sulfates and silicons. Their One-Minute Hair Masks are the most impressive of this feat, especially with the recyclable containers and the list of ingredients. I actually love that the larger size uses all that space to break down where each ingredient comes from; I don’t know why most products of anything don’t do this, cause I think consumers get too paranoid on ingredients when there’s a big word they don’t automatically know. While Garnier Fructis is taking baby steps compared to most other brands, at this point, any progress a company can make to do better by their customers and Mother Earth is better than no progress. With companies and corporations being the largest producers of unneeded waste, we can’t afford to give them too much leeway anymore.

Sadly, I haven’t found any methods to go completely waste free as far as hair care goes. And that is completely fine. A lot of dialogue in reducing waste, especially plastic use, focuses far too much on shaming consumers for not being perfectly ethical, and I’m not here for that. We can always make the effort to do so, but it takes time to shift purchasing habits, and some alternatives may be too expensive. The best action we can practice is showing support for companies aiming for environmentally sustainable. We only got one planet Earth, and we all need to do our part to help it heal!

Bath Oils

I was so excited when they launched all of those new bath oils, but I already have so much hoarded Lush that I couldn’t justify buying them when they came out! OTL

I love You’ve Been Mangoed and Floating Island.

Shower Gels and Creams

Loooove them for the scents. Current fave is Santa’s Christmas. I regret so much not buying a bigger bottle of it! As far as what you could currently buy online, I would recommend The Olive Branch.

Body Conditioners

Very much a luxury item now that there are plenty of cheap in-shower lotions on the market (I like the Nivea ones). However, I love Christingle because of the cooling minty feeling you get. For a current buy, Ro’s Argan seems to be the only option- I highly recommend it though, as I love the Rose Jam scent.

Face Masks

Some of their masks are garbage, but the ones that are good are GOOD. I love Catastrophe Cosmetic- it’s a holy grail mask for me. It’s very calming. Rosy Cheeks is just a different, rosier take on Catastrophe Cosmetic. I love them both.

Body Lotions

Lush really kills it with body products; I’ve yet to try something I didn’t love. Sleepy lotion is my current fave, because Twilight is one of my favorite scents from Lush, period.

Body Butters/Massage Bars

Very similar products, and both are amazing. I have very dry skin, so sometimes the most soothing thing is to just rub a bunch of oil/butters all over myself lol. These are perfect for that, without being as messy as an actual oil. King of Skin is truly king- it’s a very intense body butter, for the most dry and sensitive skins. From the massage bar line, I like Pearl because again I love Rose Jam scent.

Though they were only around for the Christmas season, I can’t not mention the Sparkle Jars. Check out this post for my review on the Snow Fairy Sparkle Jar. They’re so great!

Lip Scrubs

They’re delicious and last forever. My current fave is Mint Julips.

Fragrances

Not overly complicated to talk about, lol. Rose Jam and Twilight Body Sprays are so delicious smelling. Their more substantial perfumes are also great, like Lust.

Review: Lush Sleepy Lotion and Twilight Shower Gel

Let me start off by saying: yes, Lush can be pricey and some of their products seem counterintuitive (toothpaste?? as a tablet?? why) or overdone (not gonna lie I still appreciate a good bathbomb), but I do appreciate their strides in fighting animal testing, using fresh ingredients to create handmade products, acquiring their ingredients ethically, and being an environmentally conscious brand. They also make sure to pay their employees living wages. All of these factors contribute to pricier items, but I mainly have received Lush products as gifts -- which is nice because my budget wouldn’t handle the splurge.

I recently received Lush’s Sleepy body lotion and Twilight shower gel (both lavender-scented) as gifts and fell in love.

I had actually run out of the Sleepy lavender body lotion earlier that week and it was by coincidence that I was gifted it a few days later. It was one of my favorites of 2017 -- as someone with dry/sensitive skin who lives in the northeast, I’m constantly slavering myself in lotion. This body lotion was thick but not too oily or sticky and the all-natural lavender scent was super calming in my stressful day-to-day life. I personally love the smell of lavender, but if you’re not big into strong scents, this lotion isn’t for you (and let’s be honest, the entire Lush store probably isn’t for you). The container is relatively small compared to most lotions I use but the consistency is so concentrated that you only need a very small amount of the pastel lavender. It literally makes me feel luxurious to use it.

This has been my first week using the Twilight shower gel and I like it as well. I haven’t had as much time to fall in love with it, but it does keep me well moisturized and makes my bathroom smell like a calming lavender spa. It’s a little runnier than other shower gels I’ve had from Lush so I keep using too much, but like other Lush shower gels it’s pretty concentrated so the small bottle should last you awhile. Unlike the fittingly-lavender-colored body lotion, Twilight is a dark purple. As an artist, I find the colors of both to be very fitting and very calming -- integrating the lavender into my sleep routine has been super helpful in falling asleep.

The Twilight shower gel is currently sold out online but the Sleepy body lotion is still up on their site! I highly recommend both, and if you’re feeling thrifty and you’re in the minority of people who live near a Lush store, grab a free sample if you can (grab as many samples as you can) and treat yourself to a little luxury and calm as you head into the new semester.

Lush Rose Jam Shower Gel

Price: $9.95

Claims: Turkish rose absolute and conditioning argan oil dance their dizzyingly floral fragrance over skin, leaving a gentle, lingering perfume behind. The petals used to make exquisite rose oil and rose absolute are picked by hand at dawn, in Senir, Turkey, when they are at their most fragrant and have the most beautiful scent. Sweet vanilla pod infusion, combined with cleansing Sicilian lemon oil and fresh goji berry juice, add a refreshing edge to this floral gel, inspired by sticky, delicious Turkish rose jam. So lather up and smell the roses! Ingredients:

Sodium Laureth Sulfate: Helps to clean or remove dirt and oil, creating foam when used with water

Sodium Cocoamphoacetate: Gentle cleansing agent derived from coconut fatty acids. It functions as a cleansing agent and can also have mild conditioning properties. It has a slight tendency to foam during use.

Glycerine: An emollient and humectant derived from vegetable oils that helps skin retain moisture.

Water: Primarily used as a solvent in cosmetics and personal care products in which it dissolves many of the ingredients that impart skin benefits, such as conditioning agents and cleansing agents. Water also forms emulsions in which the oil and water components of the product are combined to form creams and lotions.

Vanilla Pod Infusion: Vanilla scent and it has also been shown to have some antioxidant properties. The sugars in vanilla act as humectants (moisture binding), when applied topically, and are particularly suitable for retaining moisture on hair, skin and lips. The humectant action also forms a barrier on skin, preventing moisture loss.

Cypress Leaf Infusion: It has antiseptic, antibacterial and stimulating properties. It soothes increases blood circulation and helps to detoxify the skin. Aromatherapists believe the active ingredients in cypress leaves can be calming during times of emotional stress.

Lauryl Betaine: It is a mild surface-active agent or surfactant, that is commonly considered a hair and skin conditioner.

Goji Berry Juice: Antioxidant rich Goji berries assist in protecting the skin from free-radicals. The juice is both stimulating and toning on the skin.

Lactic Acid: Helps to control the pH of finished cosmetic products

Argan Oil: Contains high levels of vitamin E and fatty acids, which helps to soothe, hydrate, envigorate and protect skin, scalp and hair; as well as it prevents oxidation of the skin's cells.

Rose Absolute: Used for its soothing and calming properties, as well as its evocative, delicate fragrance.

Rose Oil: Used in many products for its soothing and balancing qualities, as well as its evocative, delicate fragrance.

Geranium Oil: Used for its toning and balancing effect on the skin. It gives a sweet, rose-like aroma to bath products, skincare and fine fragrances. The oil is antiseptic and astringent, which helps to even out colour and oiliness by constricting the tissues to balance sebum production and circulation.

Sicilian Lemon Oil: Antibacterial properties on the skin, cleansing and brightening it when applied topically. It contains alpha-hydroxy-acids, or AHAs, which are enzymes that cleanse the skin by breaking down dirt, excess oil, product such as make up and dead skin, making it easier to reveal the fresh new skin underneath.

Citronellol: A volatile fragrance chemical extracted from geranium, rose, and other plants, citronellol has a characteristic grassy, citrus-like scent. Applied to skin, it can cause aggravation when exposed to air. This exposure causes the unstable citronellol molecule to oxidize, which is believed to trigger aggravation on skin.

Coumarin: Organic compound found in plants and derived from the amino acid phenylalanine. It creates the fragrance in fresh-mowed hay. More than 300 coumarins have been identified from natural sources, especially green plants. However, simple coumarins are potent antioxidants.

Geraniol: A colourless liquid; it has a sweet, rose-like odour, with a hint of citrus.

Limonene: Colorless liquid with a light, fresh, and sweet citrus odor used to make fragrances and flavors. It is naturally occurring substance found in many citrus fruits.

My Thoughts: I love Lush but I am not a big bar of soap fan. I’ve always been a body wash or shower gel type of girl. Its amazing to me that its taken me this long to pick up a shower gel from Lush. However to be fair I didn’t purchase this myself it was a gift from my mother-in-law. I am starting to see a trend that she funds my reviews more than my own bank account!

Back to Lush Rose Jam Shower Gel before I even used it, based totally on the smell I knew it wasn’t for me. I usually love anything with Rose however the smell was just too overwhelming. It remind me of an old women that sprayed too much of her vintage perfume on herself. Luckily Rose Jam Shower Gel is only overwhelming during my shower time, the lingering after smell is more pleasant and bearable.

The smell and more because the name of the shower gel, I thought the shower gel would be sticky or leave a weird residue behind. But luckily it didn’t, it was a regular shower gel. The gel texture was thicker than most shower gels I have used. It lathered easily, I only had to use a little product at a time. Lush Rose Jam Shower Gel moisturized and cleansed my skin without drying it out. I didn’t use Lush Rose Jam Shower Gel on my hair because the bottle was too small and it would have run out quicker if I did. I was going to purchase a bigger size so I could use it on my hair however I found out Lush Rose Jam Shower Gel is a limited edition that usually sold in the winter time.

Would I purchase Lush Rose Jam Shower Gel? Nope, I hated the smell.

Christmas is Here!

I’m back! It’s been probably the hardest months, and the worst I may have ever had, but I should be here for good minus managing a hectic home, work, and school life now! I decided to come back and give this my all. I’ve been so inspired by the biggest Lush blogs lately, and I want to become them, so we’re doing this!

As most of you probably already know, Christmas came early this year! Christmas and Halloween launched last week on the UK Lush site, and everyone lost their minds! It was the biggest shock, especially since it was during the Showcase. Surprise! I don’t think anyone’s complaining, so we’re good. Alrighty, listen up. I’ve never tried Lush before. I thought it was a weird store like Teavana and I just wasn’t interested. After bath bombs became a huge thing it hit me what the store was like. I still just wasn’t interested. About a couple months ago I became interested. I love self-care and skin-care and bath products so I decided to try it out. I was super intimidated by the first store I went into before it was remodeled at my mall because it was small and the workers seemed irritated and it was packed. I went in a couple weeks ago but wasn’t sold by anything because the sales person didn’t hook me. She just showed me the Sexy Peel and that was about it. I decided to go in this past Friday for my birthday, not actually planning on getting anything, and boy was I satisfied!! They asked me if I was looking for anything in particular and I told them I wanted to treat myself for my 18th birthday and they were genuinely really nice to me about that. Complimenting me and actually doing their best to make a personal connection (which is what you should do in retail like that!). The first time I went in, no one offered demos or samples which is ridiculous now that I know they’re encouraged to do so. This time, because the store was vacant mostly (middle of the day, weekday) they did so many demos! And genuinely sold me on some products. They got me situated with things that would be okay with my super extra sensitive skin, but were also citrusy and didn’t force any products on me. I will definitely go back for the ones I said I would.

I ended up getting the Cheer Up Buttercup bath bomb which I am SO EXCITED to try. I got a bath oil, that I’m not sure what scent it is, but it paired nicely with the CUB bath bomb’s scent. I got the BB Seaweed face mask that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE. I just used it and my face feels so nice and I was refreshed as it was drying. I got a sample of Plum Rain shower gel, which I wasn’t a fan of, but it was still nice (a little went a long way, at least). I also sampled a scrub and a moisturizer.

What was REALLY cool was the surprise I got. Now, when I mentioned my birthday it was just casual conversation. I wasn’t trying to “get anything” out of it. I also was being super friendly because they were to me and that’s just my personality. So when I got home from work today, I wanted to relax with a bath bomb. I didn’t spend a lot of time looking in the bag I just grabbed what felt like a bath bomb and put it in the bath. The package said “Happy Birthday” which was sweet of them. Anyways, I . put it in the bath and I noticed that the cornflowers on top of the CUB bomb weren’t there, which I thought was weird, but they must’ve fallen off or something. Then I noticed it wasn’t citrusy, which upset me. I was actually going to be irritated when I realized... They gave me an extra bath bomb (Fizzbanger) as a gift!! That was ridiculously sweet of them!!

I will definitely be going back for a scrubee (or two), a bubble thingy, and probably something else.

This is a wonderful store with wonderful handmade, natural products and I’m in love.

Review of Lord of Misrule Shower Cream:

THIS IS THE BEST PRODUCT I HAVE EVER BOUGHT FROM LUSH!!!!

Ok, so I had gotten the shower gel of this back by Christmas time and I loved the smell so when I saw that the same type of product was being made in the kitchen, I had to get it!

I definitely prefer the cream over the shower gel, simply because it moisturizes the skin more and the fragrance lasts longer throughout the day.

If you have never smelled this product, I think it smells kinda like sugar cookies. I don’t know, it’s just perfect.

Fourth Lush Subscription box- August

This is an anniversary box collection from 1995. This includes:

Crème Anglaise body lotion (almond oil, myrrh, resonoid, Brazilian orange)

Tisty Tosty bath bomb (rose scented, geranium oil)

Initial thoughts

Crème Anglais body lotion- so far I am really enjoying having a body lotion in each subscription box but it's really noce to finally get one in a full size pot! It smells lovely. Creamy but not particularly sweet. I usually go with sugary sweet scents but this is still lovely.

Slammer shower gel- Usually I HATE lime but this i refreshing and suprisingly I like it.

Lush Lime shower smoothie- As I said, I hate lime and this is definitely lime so I will probably give this to a family member instead.

Dirty boy soap- I hate it! To me it smells like petrol.

Tisty Tosty bath bomb- This is actually the first ever lush item that I have ever used! I think I started using lush in about 2005ish. It smells just how I remember! You can really smell the geranium oil within it!

After use reviews:

Crème Anglaise body lotion- I love the smell when it's in the container tub, but on my skin it smelt gross. Like somehow a boozey alcohol smell with an aquatic note. Hopefully my mum might like it. Score: 2/5

Slammer shower gel- It is a refreshing zing for the shower. Very citrus, but I mostly smelt lemon and barely the lime. It doesn't stain the bathtub or around the shower. Score: 5/5

Lush Lime shower smoothie. I can't really give a fair score on this one because I did not use it. I have a real dislike to anything lime scented or flavoured. My brother asked if he could have it so hopefully it will be nice for him. Score: Ungraded

Dirty boy soap. It has a masculine petrol smell but it had some lovely exfoliating properties from the salt within the soap. It felt nice when using to wash my hands and not too abeasive. Score 3/5

Tisty Tosty bath bomb. I just love it so so much! The dried rosebuds can be collected afted the bath and it fizzes in such a lovely way. It doesn't colour the bathwater in an exciting way like other bath bombs, but the lovely scent made up for that. I'm not usually big on rose scented things but I like them more when geranium essential oil is added nto them as well. This is a real retro Lush product. Score 4.5/5

Oil pulling – Rinse mouth with 1 tbsp each morning,

Make sure to oil pull first thing in the morning right after you get out of bed before you brush your teeth or drink anything.

Gently swish 1 – 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in your mouth and between your teeth for 10-20 minutes making sure that you don’t swallow any of the oil. (Do this gently so you don’t wear out your jaw and cheeks!)

Last week just wasn’t my week for anything. Work suddenly piled up with deadlines fast approaching, traffic going home was always crap, the sun now sets at 5 fucking 30, and I can’t feel my own lungs because California is on fire again. To make matters even better, my hair fucking dried up too fast, and I overmoisturized in attempting to save it. I left it in a braid for about 3 days cause I just had it, officially.

Is some planet in retrograde which is throwing everything wack or is adulthood finally sinking in? Maybe a bit of both…

But nothing is better to end the week than pay day when you don’t feel too guilty about splurging a little money on materialistic stuff. And what seemed right to throw my hard-earned money at? Lush.

Ever since I began my curly hair journey, I was always curious about Lush’s hair products. I absolutely adore their bath bombs, bubble bars, and shower gels, and their facial cleansers and masks saved my darling skin on many occasions. But I was always hesitant to throw down so much money for their hair products.

I didn’t see a large variety of YouTube reviews from other curly haired folks, much less any which address that most of Lush’s hair products contain sulfates. Sulfates are usually a big no-no for curls as they’re too powerful to already naturally dry hair and scalps. However, they aren’t necessarily the worst thing for your hair. A little bit is okay once in a while if you have a super oily scalp or struggle with product build up. If you still use sulfates, you have to also balance it out with other more-natural products if you want to avoid stripping too much sebum (also if you dye your hair, sulfates are making your color fade faster). While your standard shampoo has liquid sulfates, Lush’s sulfates are powder-based which is less harsh. And because they pack in so many other fresh, natural ingredients into their products, it balances out the otherwise powerful chemicals.

It kinda sucks that even a great company like Lush isn’t exempt from the “check the ingredients” rule, but if you’re ever second guessing on anything, just ask the employees. I made multiple trips for bath bomb restocking and took some extra time to study the hair care and hopefully attract someone’s attention to talk more about the products. I talked to four different employees at the same store, and they all pretty much said the same thing regarding the ingredients (most of the last paragraph is verbatim), and I had no reason to not trust them. I never met a dishonest Lush employee in my life, and they definitely know their shit to make sure you get enough bang for your buck.

So today, along with my hair mask of the week, I’m showing an altered hair routine with some Lush hair products. I won’t do a fully altered routine because that would be far too expensive, and I still feel iffy about a few things, but we’ll get to that when we do.

Don’t let the smell fool you. It is DEFINITELY not toothpaste.

First up, is the Yuge Hot Oil Treatment. This is a pre-shower treatment using heated oils to stimulate blood flow to the scalp which also stimulates hair growth while delivering some much needed moisture. It contains agave syrup, sea salt, jojoba oil, olive oil, spearmint oil, peppermint powder, aaaaaand sodium lauryl sulfate. Yeah, it’s kinda weird that this would have sulfates since it works more like a conditioner, but that’s just how Lush hair products work for some reason.

Despite that, there were no suds whatsoever, and it was super refreshing on my scalp and hair. And it was absolutely fantastic at detangling and moisturizing the dry ends. However, I overestimated how much water I needed to melt the treatment, so the consistency was more water-y than creamy. Also I used hot water right out of a kettle, so it took like 30 minutes to cool down. It still worked wonderfully, but I definitely needed to pay better attention to the instructions.

After leaving in Yuge for 20 minutes, I rinsed it out and shampooed with the Jason and the Argan Oil shampoo bar. As the name suggests, all the ingredients of your typical shampoo are concentrated into a bar without any wasteful packaging, and it lasts anywhere from 60 to 80 washes. It contains argan oil, rose absolute, geranium oil, rose oil, lemon oil, and, you guess it, sodium lauryl sulfate.

Unlike Yuge, the sulfates are far more noticeable in the shampoo bars, and once I rinsed it out, my hair was definitely super squeaky. Thankfully, my hair wasn’t too dried out after air-drying, so again, it’s all a matter of balance and knowing how your hair reacts to certain products. And the smell is absolutely amaze-balls. Rose is one of Lush’s best scents in anything— I happily threw down for the biggest bottle of Rose Jam shower gel once it became a year-round thing—, so I just couldn’t pass up on this shampoo bar. I also have a sample of Godiva which is also supposed to be good for curly hair, so it’ll be fun to compare the results.

Since the hot oil treatment did a hell of a job in detangling, and I was worried about accidentally over-moisturizing again, I skipped my regular conditioner and went straight for the deep condition with a non-Lush product: Love Beauty and Planet’s Blooming Strength and Shine 2 Minute Magic Masque. Given that Lush is all about reducing waste and using the freshest and most natural ingredients, it felt appropriate to use a hair mask from another company with similar values (also I was already breaking the bank with my Lush run and couldn’t bring myself to buy their masks).

Doesn’t it look so damn CUTE?

Love Beauty and Planet is all about making consumers look good while doing good for the environment. All their bottles are 100% recyclable, and they’re committed to reducing their carbon footprint by using sustainable ingredients. They still have a way to go, particularly since their shampoos still contain sulfates, but it’s super cool to see a company commit to sustainability while delivering reasonably priced products in the cutest packaging.

In any case, this is the brand’s only mask which contains rose extract, coconut oil, murumuru butter and sunflower seed oil. I was worried with the small packaging that it wouldn’t be enough to coat my hair, but it was suprisingly just the perfect amount for a mask. I didn’t have too many tangles left after Yuge, so the mask just melted right through. The smell is a little perfume-y at first, but after a while, the rose scent is quite pleasant. And it has the rich, buttery consistency I love in a mask.

I accidentally left it in for almost an hour (cause that just happens when 3 people share one bathroom). There really is no reason to leave a mask in for more than 30 minutes since after a while, the product just sits on your head doing nothing. Thankfully, it didn’t weigh down my hair, and the mask was easy to rinse out once I finally stepped back into the shower.

So good, I threw down $50 for the larger size

For my leave-in conditioner, I used Lush’s R&B Hair Moisturizer. It contains oat milk, avocado butter, olive oil, jojoba oil, coconut oil, orange flower absolute, jasmine absolute, and cupuacu butter. I actually used this before as this is my sister’s favorite hair moisturizer, but it’s been a while since she got any since her haircut a couple years ago. Even though it’s expensive as hell, I don’t mind using it daily as it’s one of the few leave-ins I tried which doesn’t weigh down my hair.

Like most Lush products, a little goes a very long way, and R&B is incredibly thick. I only need maybe a quarter-sized amount on my fingertips to refresh my hair for the day. Jasmine is another one of Lush’s great scents I just can’t get enough of, and it’s wonderful to catch the scent when I turn my head. If you have the spare money to treat yourself on any moisturizer, let it be this one, regardless if you have curls. Your hair will thank you.

I forgot to take a before picture, but I guarantee I looked like a greaseball who needed fucking Moses himself to deliver my hair to salvation. But you can still see the after of my altered routine with a mix of Lush products!

I noticed most of Lush’s hair care are heavily focused in moisture, so it made my hair really soft. Thankfully, some Curls Blueberry Bliss gel was enough to hold the new curls in place. There’s definitely more frizz than usual since I skipped my regular conditioner, and it increased over the next couple days. But the R&B moisturizer is perfect on a daily use to refresh and bring my curls back to life without too much buildup.

Aside from R&B, I won’t use Lush products every wash day since it’s more sulfates than I’m used to, and it’s super expensive. Thankfully, these do last a while, so I don’t mind using them whenever my hair feels super oily. And despite the sulfates, they don’t make my hair feel as dried out as I expected. If you’re ever curious on Lush hair care and have the money to spare, I totally recommend hitting up the closest store and chatting with the employees to get an idea of what will work best for you. Just remember that a little goes a long way and pay extra attention to the instruction videos on their YouTube channel to achieve the best results, and it’ll definitely be worth the money.
