I just finished Renegade Nell and
- Poynton is a Faustian nightmare, and Adrian Lister did an absolutely fantastic job. It felt like he was channelling Othello in his magic scene. He's an excellent villain
- Rassalas/Amadin and Roxy are really cute
- I didn't realise, but the actor who plays Charles is Frank Dillane. He played young Voldy in Harry Potter 6, and his father is Stephen Dillane, who played Stannis Baratheon in GOT
- Polly Honeycombe is perfectly named
- Sofia is a Goth Queen
- Louisa Harland had fantastic chemistry with everyone and was just generally a badass
- I don't usually care about fight scenes (Princess Bride aside), but the choreography looks good to me
- tonally, the show is pretty inconsistent, but it kinda works? I appreciate things which can be serious and can be funny, can be dramatic and have honest, human moments
- v strange to think that Tottenham was ever, well, sort of a village. If you've not been there, it's now an especially rough part of London with a rather nasty MP (super antisemetic, still received like 70% of the vote in 2019, if memory serves)
- Joely Richardson looks like she's having a blast every time she's on screen. Good for her
Finally:
- I adore Nick Mohammed when he's on Taskmaster, and he's delightful in this, too. I certainly wouldn't mind having him as my guardian angel fairy imp thingy

HI I LOVE THIS SO MUCH
pretend i havent been inactive for 100 years. i've been watching renegade nell and its giving me a new sketchbook au idea/accompanying doodles. essentially: fae highwaywoman johanna is on the run, kaisa is Out To Get Her with dark magic
you have to cut me some slack with how silly i sound. its the hyperfixation. im ill
i'm casting these freaks like actors. Johanna is Nell:
it is 1705, and barkeep Johanna has found herself a highwaywoman on the run for a murder she didn't do, accompanied by her daughters and aided by a little spirit named Alfur. she has found fae-like abilities, and despite her good intentions, she is now feared across half the country as an invincible murderess.
Kaisa is Sofia:
hunting her down is Kaisa, a lady whose family owns Johanna's pub, whose father Johanna is falsely accused of killing, and who is obsessed with catching her. she uses dark magic to fuck with Johanna's life remotely, summoning things to attack her etc - she may be untouchable when it comes to human enemies, but not magic. Kaisa herself is lonely, surprisingly empathetic, and is desperate to prove her worth and have control over her life.
other character notes:
give Johanna a gun
she is a painter and illustrator still. she is struggling to find time for her hobbies
she would rather not be robbing people but has no problem if she needs to. the rich ones have more money than they know what to do with anyway, and if she has to take a horse from some poor guy, she leaves him with stolen valuables in exchange. she's a little robinhood about it.
i think it would be so fun to keep the mythical creatures around. watch out for Devilwoman Johanna who is strong enough to kill a troll!! (she would never)
yes Lauren (belonging to @blaithnne) is included. Nell is accompanied by her two little sisters, brave & helpful older sister Roxy, and funny & inquisitive little sister George. Lauren & Hilda take their place, and maybe Frida and David tag along hehe.
Lauren & Hilda keep getting taken hostage in attempts to get Jo to turn herself in, but they always get out of it. until they do, Hilda probably talks their ears off about dragons and Lauren makes terrifying threats.
no one else REALLY specifically fits character slots like Amadin, Thomas, and Charles (there aren't a lot of men in hilda lol) so i'm going to wing it and the other characters can fill their roles when needed maybe
Thomas is Sofia's brother who killed both their father and Nell's father, and is generally reckless, careless, and easily badly influenced. i'm actually thinking of putting 18yo Dylan (oc of mine who is Kaisa's younger sister) in his place. she is a lot sweeter in regular hilda universe but i think the plot & i could fuck with her character enough that she gains these insecure, irresponsibly cruel tendencies. sorry Dylan
both Johanna and Kaisa were witnesses when her father died. Kaisa knows she's innocent, but goes along with the accusation to save Dylan from being arrested and keep the family (and their place in society) from falling apart. I'm thinking of making Dylan a boy in this, to keep the dynamic of the land going to him when papa dies > he would be a terrible landlord > Kaisa gets to take the reigns and keep everything in working order because she actually cares and enjoys having things to watch over and work on
in general Kaisa is very lonely, has to work twice as hard for the power and respect men are given automatically, and yearns for the kind of freedom and support that Johanna has despite being an outlaw from a poor family.
i think David and Frida could fill Amadin's role as friends they pick up along the way. David's loyalty and voice of reason, and Frida's fierce protectiveness and determination to prove herself both remind me of his character.
i'm inclined to draw a blank for Poynton, the main villain, a Jacobite amongst the royal guard, the siblings' traitorous mentor in black magic, and the indirect reason their dad died in the first place. Tildy is Kaisa's mentor, but not an evil one. the closest Hilda has to real villains is Erik, and the head witches maybe, but none of them really hit the nail on the head for this guy. an au oc may be in order!!!
the Bellkeeper can be Charles maybe lol. he is an established highwayman leading a double life as both a wanted criminal and a aristocrat. he is suave, a little campy, and a firm believer that with confidence, you can sweet-talk anyone into believing you are anyone. he annoys Johanna into letting him tag along and help with disguises and plans just because he finds it fun.
Lady Eularia Moggerhanger runs the newspapers, and i'm splitting that between two characters for a couple reasons. Erik is the owner of the presses (not putting him in the royal guard because it wouldn't make sense for him to be a Jacobite rebel) who generally enjoys fearmongering and controlling the public.
Victoria is the head editor with a taste for dramatics but seeks the truth above all else, and happens to be the Bellkeeper's 'friend in high places' who begrudgingly bails him out of trouble.
Gerda replaces Polly, a good-hearted writer and believer of justice who falls head over heels for Jo when she gets highway-robbed by her and mistakes her for a man. is later appointed assistant editor of the newspaper.
this happens i guess
this isn't meant to stick to the plot of renegade nell, there's a lot going on and it would be easier (and more interesting) to figure out an original plot with this different cast of characters. i just thought it would be fun to put sketchbook into an 18th century highwayman period fantasy drama with dark magic and pixies. and enemies to lovers. okay thanks
i might add onto this at some point if anyone has any questions or additions LET ME KNOW!!!!!!!! I LOVE YOU
#louise harland has my heart btw this is the crossover ever#never seen this show but IVE BEEN THINKING ABT WATCHING JT TBH#ALSO. Edna Louise Cowell Bartlett "Babe" graduated from this life to her eternal life in heaven on July 1st at the age of 93. Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel in Marietta, Georgia. Interment will follow at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church Cemetery in Mableton, Georgia. Edna was preceded in death by her mother, father, stepmother, brothers and sisters, her infant son and her husband, Ralph Bartlett.
Edna was born in Cleveland, Ohio to William and Elsie Edna Schmidt Cowell on April 19th. Following her mother's death when Edna was 6 years old, her father married Anna Josephine. At the age of 22, Edna attended a revival under the preacher, John R. Rice, came under conviction and surrendered her life to Jesus Christ. She attended Bob Jones University, where she would meet her future husband, Ralph Bartlett. They left Bob Jones University in 1953, returned to Ralph's home town of Atlanta, GA and were married. They had 6 children, their first child, John Edward Bartlett died at 8 months old. Eventually, they settled in Mableton, GA. Edna raised her children in the fear and admonition of the Lord. She assisted her preacher/evangelist husband of almost 63 years with his service in Youth for Christ, Atlanta Union Mission "Men", a couple of churches and other Christian ministries throughout their marriage. After raising her children, Edna re-entered the workforce, working 20 years for John H. Harland Company, retiring in 1992. Edna never met a stranger and loved to talk to anyone about her savior, Jesus Christ. She was a member of Mount Harmony Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Ruth Anna Bartlett of Mableton, son Steven David Bartlett (Sandy) of Talking Rock, GA, daughter Sharon Elaine Bartlett of Mableton, son Joel William Bartlett of Kennesaw, and Connie Renee Bartlett of Acworth. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Lisa Marie Woody, Aaron Bartlett, Tyler Bartlett, Sammy Dewey, Katherine Woody Comer (Trent David), Matthew Dewey (Michaela), Briana Martin, and her only great grandchild Bryson Brazil. Along with several nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 5, 2023 from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm at West Cobb Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel in Marietta, Georgia.

For the ask game!!
🤡, 🎶, and 🍦
FOR THE GAME!!
🤡, 🛒, ⛔ and 🏆
I saw that you sent another ask before I could sit down and answer the first one (sorry about that!), so I thought I’d put all of them in one answer. 😁
From this ask game:
🤡 What's a line, scene, or exchange you've written that made you laugh?
In “The Third Night of Solstice” [my Secret Santa Elucien fic], Lucien brings Elain to the old manor to spend the evening with the Band of Exiles, when this happens:
“Come on. I’d like for you to meet the Band of—”
“Bastard!” Vassa shouted from the next room.
Lucien and Elain exchanged shocked looks, then he closed his eyes as he heard Jurian yelp. It was going to be one of those evenings, he realized with a grimace.
He made it to the parlor doorway and found Jurian defending himself from a furious Vassa, each armed only with a ruffled throw pillow.
Before Lucien could say anything, Vassa hurled it at Jurian’s head and cried, “You inconsiderate son of a—”
“Vassa,” Jurian warned, then ducked behind his cushion as the other bounced off it and onto the floor. The rug was littered with ruffled pillows.
“Pig!” she shrieked, yanking off her slipper.
Jurian lowered the pillow as he noticed Lucien standing in the doorway to groan, “Finally! Lu, tell her what you—” His brown eyes widened as Elain appeared at Lucien’s elbow.
Vassa turned, blue eyes blazing, then her mouth fell open as she dropped her shoe. “Oh…”
Vassa was so much fun to write, and her banter with Jurian just made me smile.
🎶 Do you listen to music while you write? What song have you been playing on loop lately?
Like you, I love to use ambient mixer for my work! My tried and true favorites are “Resting in the Spring Court” for gentle scenes and “Walking on Stars” for mystical scenes (without the strange vinyl noise, though). I like that the channels can be customized either by muting them, making them quieter or louder, or even how often they repeat.
If there’s one song I would have to choose for repeat listenings, though, it would be “After You” by Louise Dowd and Shelley Harland. I grew up on Easy Listening music, and this song just hits the right chord for my yearning, angsty fics.
🍦 What's the sweetest fic you've created so far?
My Brilin Solstice one-shot “A Winter Court Tradition” takes the cake on that one: it’s all about kissing under the mistletoe, and that’s it. Pure fluff. ❤️
🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.
I actually had a conversation with someone about this the other day! I don’t know my work well enough to talk about overall themes yet (it’s hard to be objective), but maybe it’s finding love in unexpected places. I’ll think about that one.
Certain character types do make a reappearance, though. For example, in both ACOFAE and my original WIP novel, I have a set of twins as side characters (my best friends growing up were twins), and there’s often a large family dynamic in the story, whether it’s found family or they’re related by blood.
Nature also plays a big part in the stories I tell, and I enjoy describing the scenery. (I grew up in a rural area with all four seasons and a wide open sky where I could see the stars at night. I miss that.)
I’ve noticed that I always have characters invoking a higher power in my work (growing up in a religious household will have that effect, I suppose), and it wasn’t until later on in ACOFAE that I realized that Feyre was raised to be an atheist, and I don’t know how to write atheists, haha.
I could go on, but I think that’s a good start. 😊
⛔ Do you have a fic you started, but scrapped? and: 🏆 What’s your most popular fic?
I answered those here, but the short answers are “Yes, but only kind of”, and ACOFAE!
Thanks for the questions! I had fun with these. 😊

~Vintage Unhinged “Girlboss” Femme Fatale Movie Masterpost~
These are all movies I’ve seen and enjoyed, I’m sure there are plenty of others out there that are similar so feel free to add on (especially any with WOC). I have a lot of mixed feelings about the femme fatale trope, mostly that a lot of older films allow men to be morally gray anti-heros, but morally gray women are often supposed to be one note “evil” bitches and usually meet a bad end (death, prison, etc). Keeping that in mind here are some gals I really like, despite how the narratives of the films treat most of them. I will reblog this later with more info on where these can be watched and any other films I think of.
-Joan Crawford as Louise Howell in “Possessed” (1947)- she’s so unhinged in this I love it. Too bad both of the leading men are kind of ugly as far as I remember (your mileage may vary though).
-Barbara Stanywck as Martha Ivers in “The Strange Love of Martha Ivers” (1946) -she’s a mesmerizing ice queen and has a super fucked up relationship with her husband played by a young Kirk Douglas. One of my fave movies ever (although they are the secondary couple of the piece).
-Peggy Cummins as Annie Laurie Starr in “Gun Crazy” (1950) - literally one of the best film noir movies ever, the main couple are a sort of Bonnie and Clyde duo who rob people at gunpoint, the film was also known as “Deadly is the Female”.
-Gene Tierney as Ellen Berent Harland in “Leave Her to Heaven” (1945) She is truly frightening in this, that is all I will say. According to Wikipedia: “It follows a socialite who marries a prominent novelist, which spurs a violent, obsessive, and dangerous jealousy in her.”
-Barbara Stanwyck as Phyllis Dietrichson in “Double Indemnity” (1944) -one of the more well known films of this genre, my girl Babs kills it (or actually gets a guy to kill her husband for insurance money).

There is much to report, dear readers; and so very little time.
Both courts, along with all of the clans, have implemented some form of curfew in addition to increasing patrols. Even the pacifist Sparrow Clan now has nightly patrols, ensuring all are tucked away into their treehouses. Despite these increased security measures, the Stranger’s toll has only risen. Even the King’s mistress, so recently elevated to Countess, seems to have been a target. Of course, with her newly borne bastard daughter, we cannot completely rule out the Queen’s involvement. Other notable targets include Aubrey Crane, suggesting that the Stranger fears neither lawman or criminal. It would appear both Harland Briar and Vera Pike have mostly recovered from their brush with the Stranger, and only time will tell if Kit Scarlet and Aubrey Crane will follow suit.
To date, here is our most recently compiled list of assassinations/ targets.
Harland Briar, Seelie, recovered
Ethel Grancourt, Seelie, deceased
Mary Wren, Seelie, deceased
Thalia Efraim, Sparrow Clan, deceased
Louise Forde, Sparrow Clan, deceased
Serena Shells, Shark Clan, currently recovering
Kit Scarlet, Unseelie, currently recovering
Aubrey Crane, Unseelie, currently recovering
Morell Moret, Unseelie, deceased
Geoffrey Wlyde, Wolf Clan, deceased
Methel Strongshield, Wolf Clan, deceased
Vera Pike, Fox Clan, recovered
Alyce Norwood, Fox Clan, recovered
Thrystan Baker, Clanless, deceased
A pattern is clearly emerging: those in positions of power seem to be the Stranger’s true target. Other kills seem to be collateral damage, likely to try to throw investigators like ourselves off the scent. Alas, motives of the Stranger remains a mystery to even us. Their target pool is too evenly dispersed among courts and clans to favor any individual group as the culprit. Furthermore, a string of grisly assassinations hardly seem to be aligned with the Tears of Iwan’s agenda. The deaths are far too public to be the work of the Church of Lilith.
We will watch closely, Midsummer. Take care, and we shall talk soon.
