It's actually a whole lot worse if you consider that Zordon miiiiiiiight have had a thing for Zedd when he was Zophram. Ten thousand extra levels of complications in that Zordon hooked up his former boss he was crushing on with his ward.

So just thinking about how if you take the Boom continuity backstories, and combine them with what happens in the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers show, the messed up drama between Zordon, Rita, and Zedd is a sight to behold.

Cos first of, Zedd was originally Zophram and was Zordon’s superior and originally on the side of ‘good’. Then after an ill-fated attempt to touch the Zeo crystal, gets flayed alive by its defences, goes mad and goes evil. Zordon never knew this for over 10,000 years while Zedd assumed Zordon was to blame and deliberately never told him who he was while they were fighting cos all that time or why he hated Zordon so much cos drama.

Somewhere after this time, while Zordon was fighting both Lord Zedd and Master Vile, he was present for Rita’s birth. Then cos Zordon failed to actually stop Master Vile from getting to Rita, she still got captured and raised evil anyway.

But then somewhere in whatever thousandth year of her life, Rita tries to kill Lord Zedd in the name of her father, but Zedd wins and offers her the chance to work with him instead of her dad, which she takes up on real quick. So now you have Rita working for Zedd and both of them having no idea Zordon was involved in either of their lives at some point.

And then Rita gets captured by Zordon near earth but she manages to cast the spell to rip him into the timewarp but she’s still sealed in the dumpster.

10,000 year timeskip

Here Boom comics are on their own trajectory, but going by the OG show, Rita gets out of the dumpster, terrorises Power Rangers but fails. Zedd realizes she hasn’t accomplished anything after 10,000 years and takes over and puts her in the dumpster again. Then season 2-3, she love-potion-roofies Zedd and marries him.

And I remembered her calling Zedd ‘old man’ in that ep and thinking, well it’s not like Rita looked young (before they switched actresses) and you can’t tell with Zedd cos he doesn’t have a face. But now by their Boom backstories - Zedd as Zophram was older than Zordon, and he got flayed and became Zedd before Zordon became a sage. Zordon was there for Rita’s birth when he has become a sage, and at that point was also dealing with Rita’s father Master Vile becoming full evil, which her mom had only really realized when she was already pregnant with Rita. By the time Rita was an adult, Zedd had been an active threat to the universe for possibly thousands of years before she was even conceived.

And this adds even more layers to why Master Vile was supremely pissed at her marrying Zedd in the show - Zedd-as-Zophram used to actively fight against Dark Specter’s forces, who is Master Vile’s patron. Even when he turned evil, Zedd doesn’t want to associate with Dark Specter and does his own thing. So you have that, and now we know, Zedd is either around the same age or older than Master Vile himself. No dad wants an older son-in-law who is also effectively a work rival LOL.

Even Boom-comics Master Vile, who isn’t as loving with Rita as the OG show, basically has the tone of “oh you come crawling back home after it didn’t work out with your boyfriend for the past thousands of years” when Rita returned to him.

And can you imagine at the point where Rita and Zedd married, Zordon basically has to consider how the little girl he was suppose to protect way back when is now shacking up with his old friend/boss, and both are evil and want him to die.

So the Z-wave sparing them, was it cos their love was that genuine that it absolves them of being fully ‘evil’ despite like, we’re talking thousands of murders; or most likely cos both of them knew Zordon and he was like “look the whole things screwy anyway but if I mindwipe you both into being pure good now, it’s somehow not as bad” and bam, they’re spared and turned human at the end of In Space

TLDR: Zordon somehow through a series of coincidences, bad luck, and some failure, got his old boss/friend hooked up with his ward.

Hey cos I saw you on some Rita/Zedd posts. Have you read #109 of the series? Rita and Zedd’s clash has some interesting tidbits that shine more light on their relationship.

Oh, yes, I saw the comic just recently. I did appreciate the little tidbits of at least the implication of Zedd and Rita flirting...but, as per usual, it is STILL so toxic.

Real talk, I only found enjoyment in the smaller moments this issue:

Stone Canyon boys coming to protect their girl.

Grace going back for Terona, like a good little Red.

Matt getting out, but not without YET ANOTHER helping of trauma to add to his untreated PTSD.

Billy and Tommy battle bros. Haven't seen them since pre-Shattered Grid.

All of the effort going into making it clear that Zack's gonna be the dad friend going forward. Let him adopt all of the aliens from now on.

....Honestly this feels less like getting prompted twice as getting fed treats at a sample sale twice and, therefore, my only reaction is to give proper tribute twice.

Two for One Specials and all that~

Trying to Answer that Ask from @ajgrey9647 about Skull choosing violence or grace when left alone with Drakkon:

"You only need three things to bring back some order from the culling that's been happening. And they're not even very hard to get."

Jason, young and smooth skinned and with such dark hair, continued to try and stand tall in his anger at yet another death happening, not looking at those glass cases still shiny and pink with bloody water and a heart inside one while the other remained draped over with a black cloth to hide the head floating in embalming fluid nobody wanted to venture a guess as to where Skull had gotten. If he looked over there, he'd have to look at the Ranger Slayer's look of unquestionable relief at being given an out from performing an execution.

Or look over at the version of his older self, gripping the island lab table like a lifeline, hard enough to warp the metal, tears rolling down his face and his screaming from earlier having made him hoarse even as he gulped for air at the height of something that could have been a full blown dissociating panic attack serving as a balm to his rage at not taking Drakkon out himself...

Skull held up his hand, the clean Orange suit doing a good job to distract from the horror underneath as he lifted one finger at a time, speaking clearly and concisely to his audience.

"First, you need to go back to where the Blue Emissary's body is and have Billy punch the corpse while calling out his morph."

All of the faces observing him looked horrified at the very idea, but he continued on as if he was talking about the weather, "Being that both of them are Blue, they're attached to the Morphin Grid in a way that most other Rangers and Colors aren't. Emissaries are not quite like other living beings; they represent something eternal, echoing on forever--even if they have to leave their bodies behind."

He was fully aware that Billy understood these words. Did not like them, and shifted under the weight of one eye he knew was looking at him from behind the visor, but would do as he was told if it meant saving the universe.

Skull held up a second finger.

"Two, you need to cooperate with Grace Sterling and Promethea and have Zordon have a long overdue conversation with Lord Zedd, because the Empyreals are being controlled by someone that was never Zordon's friend. Or Zophram's." Zordon seemed to almost go purple in the face, about to launch into a long, drawn out speech about fellowship and Eltar being an example of all good things in the universe, but Skull took the split second before that to interrupt him as if he was barely worth the time.

"If you seem so unsure about why Zedd seemed so keen on going after you for thousands and thousands of years and feel as if you don't believe what I'm saying, then when you go and ask him his real name, try and posit the question about why it is if he thought you were plotting his death, why it was that Zartus was right there--killing witnesses?"

Zordon's jaw seemed to hang open, many hundreds of thoughts and emotions streaming through him; as if his memories were a tank full of water and someone had gouged a hole in it instead of slowly unwinding a valve. Alpha had stopped gently pressing from foot to foot, twiddling his little fingers, to look up at his master like a child.

Skull held up his last finger, his shoulders still tight as Tommy looked about ready to jump in with his own questions; his protective instincts almost amusing if Skull hadn't been so damn tired, "If you want to defeat the Empyreals, then find some way to get along with the New Green without your petty insecurities getting in the way. The only way to defeat the Empyreals is by taking back their hearts, so you can bring back the Emissaries. The one thing that they will protect is their chance to continue walking the mortal coil and each other. Just because they're on a leash right now doesn't mean they won't throw everything they've got at you. Right now they're only two, and with Drakkon out of the way, hopefully, you won't have to deal with the third." He lowered his hand and tilted his head over towards Trini, young and disconcerted, but listening intently (like her older self hadn't been willing to in a long time) even as he slowly walked towards where he knew the oversized room for showers and cleanup after Ranger missions was, "You should work with Aisha to hone in on the Yellow Emissary. Not to locate them, just to talk to them. Go with her to Safehaven and try focusing on your Grid Energy together."

Second chapter of that two-shot I've been dithering on WAY too long for that Green with Evil Identity Reveal AU for @koragg1:

Here was the truth of the matter: Billy had never been so proud or so terrified of and for Eugene in equal measure.

And why shouldn't he be proud? Not even Jason had managed to land a downer hit on the Green Ranger, and he'd been trying for the sake of his friends and the world, Power on and at his back and righteousness in his veins.

Skull had been protecting Billy, which might not have seemed so much in the grand scheme, not much to shake at, but Billy had known in his gut that there was something more to the boy than others deemed to give a second thought to.

Still, it would have been nice if whatever gave him the Wrath of Gods could have stuck around.

Especially after he hauled himself up out of the fountain and collapsed on the grass, looking no more threatening than a newborn fawn still covered in viscera. Couldn't even seem to be aware of anything; even Billy bodily lifting him and talking to him about giving directions to his car. 

Then meandering into trying to compliment him, stroke his ego to keep him awake as Billy found the car--unlocked, because of course it was; nobody was going to steal a 90s Toyota Corolla with spotting paint, a billion scratched, and sticker that boasted the queer punk lifestyle; not even in fucking California--and carefully dropped him into the back seat, pausing only to send an urgent text to Trini. The sight of Eugene's blood on the leather seats from the thin cut along his arm reminding him instantly that if what Skull did ended up on the news or the internet before someone talked to Bulk...Billy didn't even want to imagine the explosion...

"Hey, you wanna tell me why you didn't keep that sword? You could have showed it off as proof of your good deed and heroic actions; it would have looked really great on your bedroom wall...or something."

Skull shook his head and immediately regretted it, the movement causing his blinding migraine to flare back up and the nausea to hit him like a kick in the stomach; body vibrating with the loss of all of his energy and he curled tighter into himself and was only vaguely aware of Billy driving faster than he would have imagined he was able to unless it was an emergency.

"Don' wan' it," he practically slurred, tongue heavy and mouth dry for some reason, "Was...bad."

Billy really didn't mean to swerve a little at those words, but something told him he really needed to listen to Skull about this; the hairs on the back of his neck were standing up, and his Ranger instincts were going crazy.

He righted the car and cleared his throat, trying to seem nonchalant, though he needn't have bothered with Eugene being so out of it, "Bad, how, exactly? It looked like just a normal sword and I didn't notice anything to suggest differently when it bushed my pinky finger."

The lithe body continued to curl and shake, but Eugene seemed to try to articulate the right words for the unpleasantness he'd felt when he'd touched the sword, the way his arm seemed to go numb and something in him had hoped when he dropped it...maybe it had broken and was useless.

"Fel' like...the Hope Di'mond...or...uh...tha' mean wine cab'net with the...the thing...the uhhh..."

"The Dybbuk Box?"

"Yeah...tha'...top things no' to mess with...Sword fel' like tha'..."

Perfectly aware of the list of heavily cursed items throughout the world that were alleged to bring terrible luck onto their owners Skull was talking about, as Billy had been the one that printed out the list for a game they'd played when they were nine and wanted to work out how they wouldn't have kept the items for themselves or would have worked to vanquish the evil within them, the genius young man felt his own throat go dry as he pulled into Skull's 'neighborhood.'

He slowed the car down in front of the lonesome two story house that stood ominously surrounded by woods, the sound of the trains that hauled grain and livestock sounding off not terribly far away from the small creek and abandoned tunnels that made up a large chunk of his childhood memories beyond the house's back 'yard' igniting nostalgia Billy worked to push down, down, down as he tried to form a plan in his mind.

It wasn't really scientific, but since Rita showed up, a lot of things that had seemed impossible before had been proven to be very real--Skull beating the shit out of the evil Green Ranger and being able to sense unspeakable evil in a sword didn't even make his top ten impossible things not worth considering...

But, first, getting Skull out of his wet clothes, his injury cleaned (fuck, it looked like it was bleeding much more than was safe, fuck) and...getting him into bed.

Everyone he loved tended to die, get hurt, or grow to hate him. Sometimes all three. The last thing he wanted was to be…well. Himself. With Zack. Because if he was himself, with Zack, surely that would drive him away. It’d driven everyone else away.

He remembered when they were teenagers. Billy opened his mouth, and Zack asked Trini for translation. Zack made a pop culture reference or dance reference and Billy smiled and asked someone else privately. When they were finally starting to understand each other again Zack was chosen for that convention. By the time he got back, Billy was no longer on planet.

It’d been too long, and Billy wasn’t sure if they could make an excuse for a relationship now.

What Your Favorite Boom! Comics PR Ship Says About You

Jason/Trini: That issue cover with them kissing full on the mouth wearing each others colors has been your screensaver at some point in the recent past. Jason/Kim: You don’t understand why Kim ever fell for Tommy when Jason was right there. Kim/Matt: You still retain some affection for Matt from his GGPR early days and were one of the few people that actually felt bad when he died in Shattered Grid. Also, chances are, you remember that Dear, John Letter episode from the live series and think he’s the guy. Zack/Trini: You believe that the Power Rangers: Pink series is better than anything going on in the current continuity and, truth be told, this is actually pretty healthy as future scenarios with these two go. Trini/Kim: You believe in the inherent eroticism of two powerful young women having the greatest lesbian power dynamic of all time. Billy/Jason: I can’t prove that you have a blog of fanart in different fandoms that revolve around short boys/tall boys or smart kids/jocks, but I can say it is a distinct possibility. Jason/Tommy: You don’t understand why Tommy ever fell for Kim when Jason was right there. Tommy/Kim: You are a sucker for first love stories and cried your fucking eyes out at the beginning of Shattered Grid when they were gonna kiss and Tommy got stabbed in the back. Jason/Lauren Shiba: You are totally okay with two damaged people finding solace in each other on the brink of total destruction. But... *KNOCK KNOCK* FBI, OPEN UP! Jen Scotts/Kim: You have a fetish for brunettes that could stomp you to the ground and radiate pure bisexual icon energy through any situation. Coinless Bulk/Ranger Slayer Kim: You believe in the course of true love being found through trauma and unwilling betrayal and one person in the whole world believing that you deserve forgiveness. Or you just like character growth bringing two people together. Black Sentry Adam/Scorpina: You just love the idea of SOFT! MEN! GETTING! PEGGED! Black Sentry Adam/Coinless Spy Skull: You didn’t want their lives in Drakkon’s palace to be completely devoid of affection. Which is fair. Rita/Zedd: You didn’t see anything problematic about the original series in that Rita basically drugged and date raped a guy to make him tolerable. You also saw no problem in this backfiring on both parties involved after the Z-Wave and hope the comics continue in this vein. Zordon/Zedd (aka Zophram of Eltar): You have shipped Xavier/Magneto at some point in your life. Goldar/Scorpina: You read that one Annual where they basically had a date at the fair and refuse to think of them as heartless monsters ever again. And who could blame you? Grace/Terona: You are a firm believer in the inherent eroticism of mutual trauma turning to romance--on the moon. Billy/Matt: You have a fetish for intellectuals taming and/or fixing hot head alpha males. Zack/Violet: It’s like the Lois-Clark-Superman dynamic, but in reverse. You’re totally okay with nothing happening until the last second. Skull/Billy: You just want good things for these childhood friends turned bully/victim turned hero/admirer. And really, who wouldn’t? What Thoughts Come to Mind About Your Favorite Boom! Comics PR Ship (part 2)

Zedd/Rita: Separate beds for when arguments get out of hand. Ordering takeout that gets stolen from each other like magpies when they’re in good moods. A parody of the song “I Got You, Babe” by Sonny and Cher. Kintsugi teacups for anniversary gifts. Choosing to grow plants or buy first edition books instead of having children. Miscarriages, trying, giving up, holding hands tight. Eating ginger with tea, even when it’s a little gross. Aisha/Rocky/Adam: Those born in captivity big cats that are raised by foster parents of totally different species and grow up all the better for it. Reading The Catcher in the Rye for school and getting into philosophic debates about whether or not the work has merit because it’s beautiful even though it came to light that Salinger turned out to be so much more problematic than the public first assumed. Painting toenails before going to the beach, checkering the colors of each other in perfect turns. A shared queen bed with ten-thousand stuffed animals they won for each other at the fair. Zordon/Zedd | Zophram: Grief in silence, grief in rage. Parasols shared at the beach at sunrise or sunset. Holding the button for the other when they get out of surgery but don’t want to use the pain medicine. Silently reading together, or working on battle plans with much the same energy and intent. Sex that doesn’t happen but once in a blue moon; and it’s usually awesome. Eating terrible food made by the other until they throw in the towel and finally go to cooking classes with people half their age. Billy/Jason: Shared looks in silence and understanding more precious than gold. Bandages in the cabinet, as well as iodine, aspirin, poultice, and salves always in stock. Stitches in awkward places like the armpit or the cleft of the ass. Sugar cookies made by long forgotten recipes. Playing games that involved bottles and closets when grade school was a daunting prospect and they couldn’t wait to be sixteen. Trying out a first kiss on each other and remembering it as so very strange, but also nice after a few more tries. Taking pictures of the other in skirts at the mall with friends, heels tripping them up, but still admitting they and the others look incredible, if slightly uncoordinated in color choice. Aisha/Kim: So much time doing each other’s hair with bells and ribbons and new hair care items. Oil massage on each other after a knock-down drag-out battle that left them both still very keyed up. Eating Indian food and stealing each other’s milk when the realization hits that it’s so much more than expected. Matching lingerie and chokers. Hauling one or the other out of bed when the holidays come a knocking and their are potatoes to peel and turkey to cook. Making out in front of disgusting conservative assholes, complete with fitting their hands into the other’s back pockets to squeeze.

Little piece of that multichapter Alternative Ranger fic I'm still working through. @lordkingsmith 's request made this a little more slow going, but I do love taking things apart~

Zedd was finding this fairly amusing as a sight to wake up to after the initial shock of returned skin--returned nose, and eyelids, and the ability to feel gooseflesh from the light chill of Zordon's Command Center, and his penis, and fingernails--and the annoying little robot and the female Rangers checking his body functions before answering any of his questions.
