If you live in the USA AND want to be an ally… if you want to start talking to people in your community… carry a lighter and a pack of cigarettes.

Keep it on your body, keep it in your glove compartment of your car.

But ALWAYS keep a lighter and a pack of cigarettes.

You should probably just get a multipack of cheap lighters and a carton of cigs. I recommend a camel menthol or camel crush menthol. Where the colors are green and blue.

Don’t hand out whole packs, just 1 cig at a time when someone asks if they can bum one or get a light.

With this simple offering you will endear yourself to the community so quickly.

Anytime you can share at LEAST a light, they will trust you so much more and be willing to engage with you.

Hey guess WHAT it's #small brag Sunday! I have some small brags to share!

First: I grew things in my GARDEN ! The first courgette is nearly ready to be a real courgette and the chard leaves are coming in quicker than I can find things to put them in ♥♥♥

Second: my herbarium is going great! I have 80 samples collected, and 20 of those are fully pressed, dried, and arranged on boards like the plant above.

This plant is our friend pignut, or cúlarán, which as the name suggests produces a nut-like growth on its root. I haven't got to try it yet but I've been told they taste like water chestnuts.

Third: no picture for this one but I performed a poem at an open mic night on Friday and everyone applauded for me!!! and Jamie said i'm "good at words"!!! and the mother of two queer teenagers hugged me & asked me if i'd be willing to hang out with her kids some time cause she wants them to have more queer community ! 🥰🥰🥰

I think the silliest thing to me about all those folks fervently advocating against voting is... even if everything they said were true, voting still wouldn't cause any harm. And it's easy. So why not do it?

Like, blah blah blah, conspiracy theories, psyops, "both parties are the same", doomerism and hopelessness, etc. – okay, fine. I could decide to believe in all of this shit AND still vote. And even from the worldview of someone who believes in all this shit... voting still wouldn't make things actively WORSE, right?

In fact it's kind of like a political version of Pascal's Wager (obligatory "I'm not Christian or even religious at all" disclaimer; it's just that anyone interested in philosophy knows about Pascal's Wager). Instead of picking a row here...

One of the annoying things about being good at a physical hobby that doesn't create anything in the modern day is that if you want anyone to care about it enough to share with them, you also basically have to be a hobbyist in video editing, have a good camera, look conventionally attractive, and a location that doubles as a studio. You're a showcase for content first and a person with a hobby second.

I think people watch those things as punishment because they don't have the means, time, extra money, etc, to do anything meaningful to help. So at least they can acknowledge and bear witness to the horror, even if they're not able to actually help.

right but like. "at least they can do this" makes it sound like doing that is actually materially useful, and i'm not convinced it is. i think in many cases it is only increasing the number of people suffering in the world. i agree that people are doing it because they feel powerless in other regards but in the majority of cases i think it's harming more than helping

You really are on the local gossip grapevine when you have a pup - just found out from a wee lady with two TINY pups who is the heartbeat of this estate the reason why a police van was on the street for four hours yesterday.

It’s really sad - a local guy of only around fifty seems to have dropped dead suddenly. Next door neighbours knocked his door a couple of times over the weekend and heard his wee dog barking but no answer so got the cops to take the door off yesterday afternoon.

Poor wee soul seems to have been sitting with his body since Friday 😿. Luckily the neighbours are adopting them!
