received an advanced reader copy of The Accomplice from Random House Publishing Group – Ballantine Books via NetGalley, in return for my honest opinion. The Accomplice by Lisa Lutz is a story about friendship, secrets and staying true to oneself. Luna Grey is socially awkward, has few friends and always has her guard up. Owen Mann is someone that people are drawn to but is always looking for something more than what he has. Owen and Luna strike up a friendship in college and are soon inseparable. Years later they are both married and live within walking distance of each other. Both Luna and Owen are in struggling marriages due to the secrets they keep. When Luna discovers Owen’s wife has been murdered, tragedies from both Luna and Owen’s pasts will be revealed and their friendship will be put to the test. This was an excellent story, with a great pace that reads like a mutual friend is catching you up on what’s been happening in Luna and Owen’s lives. Slump No More!

I hit a bit of a “blah” patch with my reading toward the end of August.  Nothing was really grabbing my attention, and I really slowed down on a lot of my reading.  And then Labor Day arrived----my 4-day holiday with me and my books and it was GLORIOUS!  So excited when I get to share some good ones, and all three of these are definitely worth sharing!

The Accomplice by Lisa Lutz

Owen and Luna are the very best of friends, stemming back to their university days.  Now, years later when Owen’s wife get’s shot, Luna is right there to help Owen through the nightmare…just like she was there for him when his girlfriend mysteriously died 10 years ago.  I thoroughly enjoyed this, especially the male/female friendship without the usual sexual undertones.  This book kept me guessing all the way to the end.  I’m definitely a fan!

The Resting Place by Camilla Sten

Eleanor has face blindness---the inability to recognize faces, no matter how many times she’s seen them.  When her grandmother is murdered and Eleanor finds out she’s inherited a mansion/farm/land that she’s never known about, she starts on a journey to learn more about her family’s secrets than she could’ve ever dreamed.  Since I really enjoyed The Lost Village by the same author, it was a no-brainer to read this one as well, and it did not disappoint!  Very different from a lot of the suspense books I’ve been reading of late.  I recommend!

Unmissing by Minka Kent

When Lydia shows up at her husband’s doorstep after having been missing for 10 years (and declared dead during that time), it’s a true understatement to say some things have changed.  Her husband has remarried, has kids, and is doing extremely well financially.  But when we find out where Lydia’s been all this time and why, that’s where to true twist comes in.  Quite the page-turner, with an extra twist at the end that I never saw coming!

Dzień dobry kochani Patrząc na opis #pasażerka #lisalutz spodziewałam się czegoś zupełnie innego niż dostałam, przynajmniej na początku. Początek tej książki był dla mnie jedną wielką gmatwaniną wydarzeń wydających się z pozoru bezsensownymi... No bo, ktora kobieta ucieka jeśli ma pewność, że jej mąż spadł ze schodów... Która kobieta decyduje się zamienić z inną na tożsamość... W dodatku to wszystko wydaje się tak proste, że aż nierzeczywiste... Właśnie dlatego miałam ogromną ochotę rzucić tę książkę w kąt... Jednak potem zaczęłam poznawać tę dziewczynę, pojawiły się te fragmenty z mailami i zapragnęłam dowiedzieć się, co wydarzyło się zanim Tanya stała się Tanyą... I powiem Wam, że to jest naprawdę dobre... Sekrety, które wychodzą na jaw na końcu książki, nie spodziewałam się. I zakończenie, które daje nadzieję, że Nora ma w końcu szansę na normalne szczęśliwe życie. Jedno małe kłamstwo w przeszłości może mieć wpływ na całe życie i to nie jednej osoby... I read Passenger by Lisa Lutz some time ago and it’s one of those reviews that just got lost in the shuffle. So…let’s get started.

MY REVIEW

The mystery has begun and Lisa Lutz kept me guessing until the end.

Tanya’s husband falls down the stairs and dies. When she finds him, she runs. Why?

On the run, she hooks up with Blue…WHOA. She is a badass and could definitely teach Tanya some lessons. Wonder what her story is?

Trouble comes looking for them and bodies fall.

How would you go about creating a new identity….a new life?

Their life keeps getting more complicated and I wonder what will become of them. My curiosity and Lisa’s pacing and suspense keep me tearing through the pages, wanting answers, but…

Lisa Lutz is not new to me. I have checked her books out from the library and enjoyed them. Passenger is full of a lot of words and some took me on long convoluted paths. Were they there to just lengthen the story or were they essential to the character development and suspense? I don’t expect fiction to be ‘real’ but, to me, a suspense novel like Passenger doesn’t need events just to have them. Know what I mean? It just slows the pacing and lessens the suspense and I like the white knuckled, breath holding, must know what happens next feeling.

I don’t quite get what’s going on and don’t find out why she is running until the last 20%. I do love that I didn’t know the story and had to read to the end to find the answers I was seeking.

Blue kept popping in and out and I loved it. There are no heroes here. All in all, I enjoyed the story. 

I read an ARC, so I hope Lisa trims the fat and makes this the top notch book I feel it can be.
