Shortwave radio - real signals - on your PC. Download Skywave Linux, make a boot drive, and tune in broadcasts from around the world.
You don't need an expensive radio on your table, nor do you need a big antenna outside. Apartment or condo dweller? Get Skywave Linux and tune in the world. From anywhere to anywhere.
Does AM radio offer noisy, crappy, propaganda-filled programming where you live or work? Use Skywave Linux and find some clear and BS-free programming instead!

one of the biggest advantages of customization in linux with keyboard only window managers is that you don't even need a good password. Typical windows users cannot use your computer, and for extra safety you can launch your window manager on all tty and remove the need for a password entirely (don't do that). You and only you know your custom system with absurd shortcuts to type to open anything at all that come from some obscure reference that not even your personal cia agent knows about.

hey fam how we feeling about my setup
settled in to a setup on a temporary installation on my laptop before i get a new machine. it feels so so good to finally abandon windows, having never even touched win10 (this laptop has been running WIN7 for as long as i've had it, i would genuinely rather rip an arm off over using win10 on a personal machine)
Debain 12 running X11 with i3-wm, with feh for a background and picom compositor for transparent terminals, 4th screenshot has audacious using a winamp skin lol, i know i don't need both pulsemixer and alsa-mixer at the same time but i find it funny having them both open.
going to probably replicate this setup on my new machine with a secondary floating window manager like fluxbox or something for when i need it, overall really happy with this setup and i'm surprised how fast i managed to get comfortable with i3 after installing it (1 day, just 1 day and it felt like home) i love linux
ask me questions about my setup :D i'd love to talk with other linux users more
#linux#how do i tag this#oh well i can just dump some shit here lol#debian#i3#i3wm#urxvt#pulsemixer#alsa-mixer#audacious#deus ex#deus ex 2000#dx1#JC Denton#sorry deus ex fans for tagging something loosely related#(i'm a deus ex fan but have like never interacted with any other deus ex fans)

what tiling wm do you use?
I use swaywm, which is a Wayland clone of i3wm.
The main thing I like about sway and i3 is that they have no default behaviour, all the defaults are drawn from a default configuration file so you have a nice solid base you can use to make edits, deactivate defaults, and learn how everything works together. Tiling managers ask you to do a lot of customisation so it's important to get out of the way and expose the configuration clearly.

i just accidentally set my dpi to 10000 and now can't close i3 or open a terminal. well i can still use a different tty :)
(setting my dpi to the proper value of 144 still makes everything way too small)

Ok so like I get why a lot of people want to use Ubuntu or mint over Debian, as a more like “user friendly” option or whatever but like
I do not understand manjaro. Like… just use archinstall with kde and it’s the same! AND you get to say you use arch!! Am I stupid or like……. That’s the only difference right, is manjaro has a worse logo and gui installer?? If I was gonna install Linux for someone that didn’t want to learn Linux it’d probably be like popos or kubuntu (or suse if they had good opinions) because they absolutely will not care that pacman is the best package manager and will give 0 fucks about the AUR and just want to use an App Store or double click an installer on top of “what do you mean I should update my software every day that sounds terrible”
#I miss arch ):#I did the responsible thing and put fedora on my laptop while I’m looking for jobs#and until I get one I shouldn’t take the time to fuck with an arch install even though I really really want to#fedoras cool I guess but I miss pacman 😭#but saying fedora is my daily driver sounds better in interviews#I did absolutely get i3 set up again though#I missed her so much#i3 my beloved#bad Linux opinions probably

Adding a snow visualizer to the media server this morning. Prototyping the effect on GPX meant that I mostly just ported the code over, only really had to modify it to make it more responsive to the music. I'm not sure I'm fully satisfied with it yet, opacity, flake thickness, and step speed (the amount by which the particle can change it's own speed) are all linked directly to the frequency pulled off the audio analyzer. It looks pretty nice for songs that spend most of their time relatively quite, but on loud/fast songs you lose a lot of the subtlety.
#bonus points#didn't have my trackball handy#so this visualizer was written entirely within i3#i3#linux#vogon media server#that's why there's no min/max/close icons on the title bar of the browser window#all that is done via keyboard shortcuts.

out of all the high-level programming languages my comp sci class could've chosen to focus on they of course went with c#. which. yknow. is microsoft's thing. which of course means everything is based on visual studio. which you can really only use in its full capacity on windows. which i Don't Have. it was enough of a pain in the ass getting it to work properly on my macbook air and they're retiring the mac version in august 2024. because. yknow. microsoft. why couldn't we have learned c++ or something i feel like c++ would be more beneficial overall but noOoooOOOOoOoOO it's GOTTA be MICROSOFT. don't mind me i'm complaining
#EVEN C. I FEEL LIKE C AS THE ORIGINAL BASE LANGUAGE FOR ALL OF THESE WOULD BE MORE BENEFICIAL TO LEARN#BECAUSE THEN IT WOULD ACT AS A STEPPING STONE TO C++ AND C SHARP. BUT NOOOOOOO#WE JUST HAAAAVE TO DO C SHARP. AND EVERYTHING'S GOTTA BE MICROSOFT-BASED#THOSE OF US WITHOUT WINDOWS CAN GO FUCK OURSELVES I GUESS!!!!!#girl i am not installing windows on my laptop. i will not do it. i refuse.#i will wrangle the mac version on my shitty early 2020 i3 macbook air that loves crashing on me when i have too many#things running at once and then i will figure out an alternative if necessary. i will not install#the bloatware that is modern windows on my other laptop. i will not do it.#AND I WOULD JUST DO IT ON MY OTHER LAPTOP (WHICH RUNS A LINUX DISTRO) IF NOT FOR THE FACT THAT THE ONLY THING AVAILABLE ON LINUX#IS VSCODE. AND WHILE VSCODE IS GOOD FOR ALL MY FRONT-END NEEDS#TRYING TO WRANGLE IT FOR C SHARP IS A NIGHTMARE!!!! FOR WHATEVER REASON!!!!! CANNOTTTTT GET .NET INSTALLATIONS TO WORK NO MATTER WHAT I DO#whatever. it's fine. i am so normal
