Now that I'm back from the gem and mineral show, here are all the Cool Rocks I came home with!

A cute little coral fossil! He looks like a cauliflower.

A Keokuk geode! These geode beds aren't far from where I live, and it's always fun to have local specimens.

Phosphosiderite! This purple stone comes from Chile. It's so soft that it has to be stabilized with resin before it's cut. This one is a cross section of a botryoidial formation!

Speaking of botryoidial, this Hematite! Botryoidial means it has a bubbly shape kind of like a bunch of grapes. The faces of the bubbles on this pieces are super shiny and metallic.

Dendritic chalcedony, from Turkey! It's a white chalcedony full of dendrites - branching formations of manganese that look kind of like trees!

A cabochon for my cab collection! This one is made from a material sometimes called "ajooba jasper." The pattern is actually a cross section of a bunch of colorfully jasperized bivalve fossils!

Speaking of jasper, this one is Blue Mountain jasper, from Oregon! The circles in this stone are what’s known as an “egg pattern,” and jaspers which have them (Blue Mountain, Imperial jasper, and a few others) are collectively known as “fine jaspers,” the most valuable jaspers in the world.

Hyalite opal! This stuff forms water-clear spheres that look like jelly.

It fluoresces bright green under UV light!

Now to show off this year's haul of awesome agates!

Dryhead agate, from the Bighorn Mountains in Montana! This agate is named after the many bison skulls found in the area. A weird shaped guy with awesome red and orange bands.

Bou Lili agate, from Morocco! I like the name of this one. Soft banding and very subtle, muted colors. I've heard that this locale can produce peachy colors too.

Bear Canyon agate, from the Pryor Mountains in Montana! Agates from this locale have very stark black and white banding.

Red Fox agate, from Argentina! Sometimes this material is also called "crater agate" because the area it comes from is near the crater of an ancient volcano.

A Blue Sky thunderegg, from New Mexico! Thundereggs from this locale often have this two pointed, saucer-like shape.

It fluoresces really brightly!

Dulcote agate, from England! The bands of this agate are full of calcite, which gives them a strange, distinct texture.

Malawi agate, from Malawi! See all the cracks in it? Almost all Malawi agates have them. Frequent earthquakes due to the East African Rift cause these agates to crack and fracture.

Paint Rock agate, from Paint Rock Valley in Alabama! This agate is very rarely banded, and usually just contains swirls of red and yellow color.

A big, unpolished slab of Montana agate! This agate is known for its clear banding and black lines and spots, which are caused by manganese dendrites.

It's best viewed with some light behind it!

A smaller piece with really amazing dendrites!

Here it is backlit!

Fighting Blood agate, from Hebei Provence in China! This locale is known for its super saturated reds and yellows. This piece has purple amethyst crystals growing inside! They didn't photograph well; they are much more purple in person.

A really weird Fighting Blood agate! This one lacks the bright colors typical of this locale, but makes up for it with that super cool spiderweb pattern!

'I Won't Stop Until Israel Admits Its Ties With the Pinochet Regime'

Lily Traubman, who immigrated to Israel in the 1970s, hopes the documents she is trying to get from the Defense Ministry and the Foreign Ministry may even contain information on her father's killers.

A year ago there were headlines when four women filed a suit for sexual abuse they suffered in prison during the Pinochet period. They demanded that the abuse be recognized as a political crime and that their torturers be brought to trial. Were such attacks something that was directed from above?

Of course. Have you heard of “La Venda Sexy”? It was a detention center where people were tortured. The name actually means “Sexy Blindfold,” because the detainees’ eyes were covered the whole time and they were subjected to sexual abuse.

All the detainees were blindfolded the whole time?

Yes. They were arrested, blindfolded and put into a room, together, with their eyes covered. Then they were tortured. Most of the female detainees were raped and underwent sexual abuse. A girlfriend of mine was held there but was not raped. She told me she’d felt fortunate, but then came New Year’s and she was raped. They’d kept her for the holiday.

Venda Sexy was truly awful. They had dogs that were trained to rape women, and they would force spouses and family members to watch the rape. More and more testimonies about these abuses come out all the time.

And throughout this whole period, Israel, under prime ministers Yitzhak Rabin, Menachem Begin and Shimon Peres, maintained excellent relations with Chile. The two countries supported each other in the United Nations and signed bilateral agreements. Army Chief of Staff Mordechai Gur visited Chile in 1978, as did Deputy Prime Minister David Levy in 1982. Both met with Pinochet.

Pinochet was even invited to the synagogue in Santiago on Yom Kippur. Other presidents were not invited.

The documents declassified by the Americans also contain references to arms deals with Israel. Secretary of State George Shultz noted in a 1984 document that Britain, France, Israel and Germany were Chile’s arms suppliers.

All the weapons of the Chilean police and army were Israeli. In Chile I went around with a photograph of my brother in uniform. At checkpoints and in searches I would take out the picture and tell them that this was my brother, who was an officer in the IDF – even though he was a regular soldier – and that did the trick. The Chilean army greatly admired the Israeli army. When Pinochet wanted to visit Israel, he threatened that if he were not received here he would cancel a large arms deal. No dictator in the world, however bad he may be, can exist without international support. The dictatorship in Chile lasted as long as it did because there were countries that supported it, and Israel was one of them.

Israel describes itself as “the state of the Jewish people,” but there are about 20 missing Jews in Chile who were murdered during that period, while Israeli governments and the military maintained close ties with Chile, accorded it legitimization in international forums and provided aid and training to its military and intelligence units.

It's so wild how with Loustat, Les was the one pretending to be a regular human, in his awkward frumpy clothes; while Lou was struggling to hold on to his high class status during their bidding war over Miss Lily ("admiration and emasculation"). But with Loumand, Louis' the one tryna pass as a regular human in his layman clothes, while Armand "masquerades" as Gentleman Death.

Both times, Lou has to contend with the power imbalances of two overpowered vampires outclassing him over & over again. But while Lou was hostile & offended by Les; he's scared & meek with Armand.

He's been humbled & broken down so much, and he knows firsthand what older/ancient vampires are capable of--

--esp. since Armand confronted Louis intending to threaten him (b4 he realized how pretty Lou was and changed his mind, LOL).

But I do wonder how Louis sensed his "ancient power" exactly? Other than Claudia he's only been around Les & Daciana; so how could he tell? (I bet Daciana's as old Armand.) This was something that always irked me in the books, cuz TWMBK weren't sensed by Lestat until Marius brought him right up to them. Is it cuz Les was too young, or TWMBK just didn't bother projecting their presence to anyone?

Cuz we know Armand was always sending out signals with his Mind Gift (but he's a pro at it, ofc).

Sometimes it seems humans can sense the undead better than the undead can; they can just tell something's OFF.

Pueden reservarse hasta 2 PBs para uso propio. No se permiten reservas para búsquedas.

♡ ANGEL'S SILLY HEADCANONS: FLOWERS (2/2)

we're back in the fucking building (angel forgot she never finished this). ximena's, freya's, kaito's, & briar's favorite flowers, and why. / @valpoinspo

ximena likes peonies. peonies represent prosperity, good luck, love, and honor. the flowers are quite expensive, particularly for a family of twelve, and so they were often part of ximena's birthday gifts growing up, a rare treat to have adorning her shared room. she loved the way they bloomed, how they would take up a whole vase. when xime got to her house in chile, there was a bouquet of peonies awaiting her on the counter, the most she'd ever seen. she sobbed the whole night after reading the card (what's new, miss sentimental) – her parents and grandparents had pooled money to get her this many, a "good luck" on her new endeavors, a request to continue to make them proud. she dried pressed every single one of them so they could never die.

honorable mentions: carnations, camellias, and lotuses.

freya likes yarrow. a common sight around the reservation growing up, freya used to spend endless hours counting petals with their friends (what they thought was a clever way to stay out past curfew and mess around). yarrow reminds freya of home, and endless nights laughing under a blanket of stars. since yarrow represents youthful love, rania received a small bouquet of it when freya finally asked her to be their girlfriend. very cheesy, but clearly it worked. now every bouquet rania receives (or any bouquet freya buys, actually) contains a bit of the flower; they see little piece of themselves in every bunch.

honorable mentions: hyacinths, orchids, and pincushion flowers.

kaito likes cherry blossoms. much like oliver's reasoning, they remind him of home. while he doesn't have as many bittersweet (heavy on the bitter) memories as oliver does, the yellow and white petals remind him of simpler times. walks home from school with his brothers, strolls through the park with his mother. the one weekend a year his father would be home and not look at his phone once, prioritizing his family over his work. they would sit outside and bask in the falling petals, watch the trees sway in the wind. cherry blossoms represent rebirth, new beginnings, and renewal, something kaito will know intimately quite soon.

honorable mentions: birds of paradise, spider lilies, and lily of the valley.

briar likes tulips. tulips, while having a variety of meanings, are known for representing love. to briar, they represent his mother. on the way home from school they'd often stop by the store to pick her up a bouquet with whatever money he could scrounge up at the time. it was a rare instance of a genuine, excited smile from the woman, something briar though they couldn't give her anymore. he likes yellow ones, specifically, because those were her favorite. there's a spot on his windowsill that houses a singular yellow tulip in a vase at all times. ask them and they'll just say they thought it looked nice.

Headcanon question time (in case this is not addressed in canon): but a guy with a name Sebastian Castellanos has to have some Spanish / Hispanic origin (and one of the reasons I appreciate you for using Santiago as his FC!). Do you headcanon this to be true and can your Sebastian speak any Spanish?

Sebastian is canonically mixed-race Hispanic, yes! He's a Latin American mestizo, though we don't know where his parents come from. In my headcanon, his father's from Chile and his mother's from Mexico, but because he never had much conversations with the latter, the Spanish he speaks and the accent he has skews Chilean even if he also speaks Mexican Spanish thanks to classmates in school.

Sebastian was born in the U.S., making him a second generation immigrant. Spanish was the primary language at home, and so he considers it his native tongue whilst his American-accented English is the product of his environment everywhere else. He can switch between both languages easily, but tends not to do so when he usually speaks one or the other with certain people. For example, as most of the folks he worked with at the KCPD were English-speaking, he spoke straight English there, and when he goes to family gatherings, he only speaks in Spanish around his relatives.

When Lily was born, he and Myra agreed that she ought to speak Spanish as well. However, Myra only spoke it in a professional capacity as opposed to Sebastian's cultural roots, and didn't really speak it in the context of a "language at home". As a result, conversations that involved Mum were mostly in English, whilst conversations with Dad alone were in Spanish.

Now that he's raising Lily alone, it's a mix of both languages as she's being homeschooled (and American sign language, considering her verbal communication issues). The moment she starts going to school with other children, though, he'll speak Spanish more to keep her in practise.

Wanda Wermińska - Libiamo ne’ lieti calici (Giuseppe Verdi, "La Traviata")

Wanda Wermińska (18 November 1900 – 30 August 1988) was a Polish operatic dramatic soprano and mezzo-soprano.

made her operatic debut in 1923 at the Grand Theatre, Warsaw as Amneris in Verdi's Aida with great success. For the role of Carmen in Bizet's opera, she took dance lessons with the flamenco dancer La Argentina. In operas such as Il trovatore, Un ballo in maschera, Don Carlos, Fidelio, Le nozze di Figaro, Andrea Chénier, Lohengrin, Tannhäuser, Die Walküre and Halka she took on more than forty roles in the mezzo-soprano and soprano genres in the 1920s.

In 1929, Wermińska left Poland and made guest appearances in Vienna, Berlin, Bucharest, Prague, Riga, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Milan, Rome, Venice, Madrid and Alexandria, among other places. In Budapest she appeared alongside Feodor Chaliapin in Faust, which invited her to perform in Boris Godunov at several European theatres.

During the period of the Second World War, Wermińska lived in South America, where she had engagements in Argentina (Teatro Colón), Brazil, Chile and Mexico, under the conductors Bruno Walter Fritz Busch and Wilhelm Furtwängler and with soloists such as Kirsten Flagstad, Maria Caniglia, Fedora Barbieri, Beniamino Gigli, Lily Pons and Mario del Monaco.

She returned to Poland in 1947, where she continued to perform as an opera and concert singer, also on radio and television, and worked as a music teacher. She was highly regarded as the "Mother of Polish Opera".

He hates avoiding. To the point it’s a key part of his personality, actually: if he ever had to answer one of those interview questions where they ask, ‘how would your friends describe you?’, where they wait for you to wax poetic about how all your best mates know you’re so diligent and such a great team player and all that rubbish (he’s never had to get a job, of course, but Peter’s described the process to him), he would have one word to give them.

Confrontational.

It’s why, although he had the build for a seeker at eleven, he chose chasing instead. He likes being able to do something. He can’t hover in the sky and watch it unfold beneath him. Dumbledore reminds him to see the bigger picture. James is. The bigger picture, for him, is every whole life that they lose. Those people’s lives are big enough. Some greater cause doesn’t numb the loss. Or fucking justify it.

 He’ll send Lily and Harry into hiding, but he needs to be out here, protecting them, or even laying a false trail. He refuses to go quietly. It’s absurd. How will staying still help?  They ward the cottage and shove him in and take his broom, which is ironic, really, because all they want him to do is soar above it all. In the junior leagues, where James first learned to toss a quaffle, their seeker had a habit of drifting towards the clouds, completely removed from the game beneath him. Getting the post with a garbled message from Wormtail is no better than peering through the rain at a blur of colours. He jogs up and down the stairs four times a day at first, but it gets more frequent until he stops marking the days. Then nothing counts.
