It hurts. Hurts to be the second choice. Hurts when my name is not the first that slips into your mind. Is my presence really that insignificant? There will always be someone better than me, yes I know. But for once. For once will I ever be someone's first? I've never been good enough. Always there but never quite. Like in between this half eclipsed thing. Not here or there. A speck in someone's life barely visible. A ghost lingering in the back. A shadow wanting to be seen. A background dancer on stage in a play. A side character in a story. Unremarkable. Forgettable. "You're good, but you're just not it," "you're just not the one, and "you could be better," but never "you're enough." I keep orbiting this expanse for which I don't have a name. Until I become a part of the void and the void a part of me and my name.
