In Memoriam / Libby Titus (1947 -2024)
Elizabeth Titus (nee Jurist; July 6, 1947 – October 13, 2024) was an American singer and songwriter. Titus was born in Woodstock, New York, on July 6, 1947. Her studies at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, were cut short by pregnancy and marriage at the age of 21. In 1968, Titus released Libby Titus, an album of folk-rock and pop music covers, on Hot Biscuit. She continued her…

Girlfriend & Muse
Libby Titus [Elizabeth Jurist; 07.06.47]
Libby Titus could be considered one of the most iconic muses in rock music history. The singer-songwriter, actress and producer was born in Woodstock, N.Y., in 1947. At age nineteen, Libby left college and married writer Barry Titus. They had a son, Ezra Titus, in 1966. Two years later, the couple separated. During this time, Libby released her eponymous debut album. Although it wasn’t a hit, she continued working as a songwriter and collaborating as a backing vocal for other singers.
Libby started dating Levon Helm, the father of her daughter Amy Helm, born in 1970. Being Helm’s partner and working in the music industry, Libby became close friends with many artists of that era. One of them was Carly Simon, who produced Libby’s second album (also titled Libby Titus, released in 1977), alongside Phil Ramone, Robbie Robertson, and Paul Simon. This release was more successful, and Libby gained recognition for the song “Love Has No Pride”, which she wrote with Eric Kaz. Other famous performers of the song included Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt.
Libby and Helm separated in the 1970s. She started a successful collaboration with Burt Bacharach. Two of the songs they wrote together – “Riverboat” and “I Live in the Woods” – were featured in Bucharach’s album Woman (1979), and another one – “In Tune” – in the soundtrack for the Italian film Amo non Amo (1979). Libby and Simon worked together again, this time with Jacob Brackman; the trio wrote “Love You By Heart” which appeared in Simon’s 1979 album Spy. Another collaboration was with Dr. John. He and Libby wrote “The Sailor and the Mermaid” for the Sesame Street album In Harmony (1980). They also wrote and performed the music for Robert Frank’s short film Energy and How to Get It (1981).
During the 1980s, Libby performed occasionally at venues around New York. Although she was never considered to be a famous singer, critics admired her style, especially when it came to jazz music. She met Donald Fagen in 1987. They both had attended Bard College in the mid-sixties, and even though they had never met before, Fagen remembered seeing Libby on campus. They were married six years later, in 1993.
Libby started producing small concerts featuring well-known musicians. She later described this period as “horrid little evenings [which started at] this little Italian restaurant on 39th Street that had room for thirty people. One night it would be, say, Dr. John plus Carly Simon, and it was by invitation only.” This project led to the informal concert at the Lone Star Roadhouse on September 20, 1989 – featuring Fagen, Dr. John, Phoebe Snow, Jevetta Steele, and Bonnie Raitt – which, in turn, gave birth to the New York Rock and Soul Revue, produced by Libby and Fagen. The Rock and Soul Revue was the reason why Walter Beck returned to New York, which resulted in Beck and Fagen reforming Steely Dan in 1993.
In 1996, three previously unreleased songs that Libby wrote with Eric Kaz and recorded in 1971, were anthologized by Pony Canyon Records. Two decades earlier, in 1977, music critic Robert Christgau had written: “I don’t like this woman, who strikes me as a cutesy-pie snob with starfucker tendencies. But there’s something sultry and smart in her voice that turns me on.” By the 1990s, Libby started to get the recognition she truly deserved. She has been described as “glamorous and compelling” and “a formidable singer-scenester.” Her acting credits include Mike Nichols’ Heartburn (1986) and Penny Marshall’s Awakenings (1990).
Libby’s son, Ezra Titus, became a writer. He committed suicide in 2009, at age 43. Amy Helm is a successful singer and musician. Libby and Fagen are still married. In 2016, she sustained injuries during a domestic fight. She informed the New York Post that they were getting a divorce; the couple eventually reconciled. The song “The Great Pagoda of Funn”, in Fagen’s 2006 album Morph the Cat, is about their marriage. Libby has also inspired other songs, including “Libby” by Carly Simon (which Libby also contributed vocals), “Pretty Libby” by Dr. John, and “Long Hot Summer Nights” by Wendy Waldman.
"She was a great songwriter; she wrote “Love Has No Pride,” (which was covered by Linda Ronstadt, Bonnie Raitt and Trisha Yearwood, to name a few). She is one of those natural songwriters that didn’t really pursue it. Maybe one of these days I’ll get her to write me something I could sing." –Amy Helm

Annie Wilkins
* * * *
In 1954, sixty-three-year-old Maine farmer Annie Wilkins embarked on an impossible journey. She had no money and no family, she had just lost her farm, and her doctor had given her only two years to live. But Annie wanted to see the Pacific Ocean before she died. She ignored her doctor’s advice to move into the county charity home. Instead, she bought a cast-off brown gelding named Tarzan, donned men’s dungarees, and headed south in mid-November, hoping to beat the snow. Annie had little idea what to expect beyond her rural crossroads; she didn’t even have a map. But she did have her ex-racehorse, her faithful mutt, and her own unfailing belief that Americans would treat a stranger with kindness. Annie, Tarzan, and her dog, Depeche Toi, rode straight into a world transformed by the rapid construction of modern highways. Between 1954 and 1956, the three travelers pushed through blizzards, forded rivers, climbed mountains, and clung to the narrow shoulder as cars whipped by them at terrifying speeds. Annie rode more than four thousand miles, through America’s big cities and small towns. Along the way, she met ordinary people and celebrities—from Andrew Wyeth (who sketched Tarzan) to Art Linkletter and Groucho Marx. She received many offers—a permanent home at a riding stable in New Jersey, a job at a gas station in rural Kentucky, even a marriage proposal from a Wyoming rancher. In a decade when car ownership nearly tripled, when television’s influence was expanding fast, when homeowners began locking their doors, Annie and her four-footed companions inspired an outpouring of neighborliness in a rapidly changing world.
[Addition:: from Minot Maine Historical Society:]
"Her mother had always wanted to visit California, so as a memorial to her mother, Annie decided to travel there. Annie arrived safely in Redding California in December of 1955.
After her trip to California, she returned back to her home state of Maine. She did return to Minot to visit, but not to stay. Eventually she moved in with her good friend, Mina Titus Sawyer up in Whitefield Maine, where she lived 24 years past her two year prognosis. It wasn’t until 12 years after she returned that she was willing to turn her diary and photos into a book.
She died on a Tuesday, February 19th 1980 in Whitefield Maine. She was 88 years old. Annie was buried in her family plot (Libby) in Maple Grove Cemetery in Minot, ME."

Lost meme: 4, 6, 14, 18, 21, 23
4. Most upsetting death?
Torn between John’s death or Sun & Jin’s double-death. John’s personal anguish and the way his hope slips away is painful to watch. You spend the whole episode watching every single member of the cast be extremely mean to him. The lift and subsequent crash of Ben coming to talk him down, only to strangle him anyway, is absolutely brutal. It’s devastating from every angle.
Sun and Jin’s death just feels so pointless and avoidable. Like, the whole situation is stupid, but at least Sayid got a little bit of heroic agency by running away with the bomb. Sun just gets stuck and Jin opts to rescue her or die trying and they tried SO HARD to find each other and I guess Ji Yeon is an orphan now and urghhhhh why so sad.
6. Smokey or Man in Black?
Smokey is more fun to say, and also i prefer his goofy CGI cloud form to his Titus Welliver form or his John Locke Bait-And-Switch form (although it is fun to watch TOQ play mean).
14. Fish biscuits or strawberries?
As merch, fish biscuits (they are iconic). For eating, strawberries (they are taste good).
18. Favorite candidate?
As a character, Locke. As a candidate, Hugo. He is the only man I trust with this stupid rock.
21. Favorite tailie?
Mr. Eko! Most of the Tailies are kinda duds - a lot of them die or get kidnapped before we get to know them, Ana Lucia is a huge jerk, Libby and Bernard are perfectly nice but not very interesting - but Eko is the complete package. Dark past. Calm demeanor. Earnest longing for truth. Refusal to apologize for having done what he needed to do to survive. Deeply allergic to buttoning up his shirt. What a guy.
23. If you could have one prop/item what would it be?
I want either Locke & Richard’s co-owned impossible time compass OR that cute lil painting Hugo did in the institution of the polar bears. I wanna hang it on my fridge.

Went to a record store in a mall here! Got Mexican pressings of these 6 records!! The Linda Ronstadt one has a different cover in the US, as does the Carpenters one. Btw that is not a hype sticker on the Carpenters LP, but it's actually printed on as part of the album cover. SSQ I could not refuse since it's one of my favorite albums ever. And of course Libby Titus is Donald Fagens wife so there's no way I could pass that record up. Suzanne Vega LP, I've just never seen it on vinyl before. Same thing for the Amy Grant one. Always see it on CD but never vinyl. And before anybody judges me for that Amy Grant LP, it's not the first album of hers I've bought and it won't be the last! I think she has such a great voice and catchy music and I just ignore the lyrics. (:

Amy Helm at City Winery NY
June 24, 2021
by Everynight Charley Crespo
Amy Helm lives upstate in Woodstock but she is almost city folk. Drummer Levon Helm of the Band and singer-songwriter Libby Titus raised their daughter partly in Manhattan, and Amy attended Trinity High School in the Upper West Side. Amy later founded and played in New York-based Ollabelle for 10 years. It is no surprise that her brief tour supporting the June 18 release of her third solo album, What the Flood Leaves Behind, included a performance at City Winery NY on June 24.

Album Number Fifty-Four “Cahoots” is the fourth studio album by Canadian/Americans, the Band. It was released in 1971 to mixed reviews, and was their last album of original material for four years. The album's front cover was painted by New York artist/illustrator Gilbert Stone, while the back cover features a photograph portrait of the group by Richard Avedon. The album features guest vocals from #vanmorrison Libby Titus, Helm’s common-law wife at the time and mother of their daughter Amy Helm, also contributed uncredited backing vocals to "The River Hymn", the first time a woman appeared on a #theband album. My copy is a late 70s/early 80s #capitolrecords re-issue - SN-16003. A Rolling Stone Magazine critic described the mood of the album as being "filled with a 'tinge of extinction.'" #rockandroll #robbierobertson #levonhelm #garthhudson #rickdanko #richardmanuel #theseventies https://www.instagram.com/p/CQWK6pVLaQq/?utm_medium=tumblr

LOST rewatch (season 6)
[follow the entire rewatch-tag here]
episode 1 & 2 – LA X:
Desmond looking good as always
I don’t like the “the island is underwater” sequence. Such an obvious red herring.
“Why didn’t he fight back? Why did he let me just kill him?”
“I’m sorry you had to see me like that.”
“We can go Dutch.”
Still not a fan of the Indiana Jones hippie temple
“I don’t like the way English tastes on my tongue.”
“You’re the monster.” – “Let’s not resort to name calling.”
STOP TALKING ABOUT MY BABY JOHN LIKE THAT!
episode 3 – What Kate Does:
GET CREEPY ETHAN OUT OF THERE!
It’s Claire Rousseau
episode 4 – The Substitute:
Okay this is when the real feels begin!
Helen, I love you!
I’d give a lot to be able to talk to Terry O’Quinn while he’s taking a bath tbh…
I feel for Richard
There it is… the weirdest damn funeral Frank Lapidus has ever been to
“John Locke was a believer, he was a man of faith, he was a much better man than I will ever be and I’m very sorry I murdered him.”
I cannot believe James just walked down this ladder of death
JOHN’S ABOUT TO MEET DR. LINUS!!!
“Tea? Now there’s a gentleman’s drink.”
episode 5 – Lighthouse:
Oh course…. Sideways Jack has a son, totally forgot that
I kinda… don’t give a frick about Jack and his son tbh – not that that’s a surprise
“That’s not John, this is my friend.”
episode 6 – Sundown:
Sideways Sayid looks sweet and cute whereas island Sayid just looks hot as fucking hell
Fucking Martin Keamy
Ben’s fucking terrified of Sayid
episode 7 – Dr. Linus:
Oh my God, it’s happening!
Dr. Linus is a beautiful human being
“It’s Dr. Linus, actually.”
“Taking care of the kids, that’s what’s important!”
I AM HERE FOR THE HIGHSCHOOL AU!!!
I love that sideways Ben can only fix up a microwave meal whereas island Ben cooks that mean ham
HIS GLASSES ARE SO SWEET, they make him look so kind and… not dangerous at all
Alex <3
A rare genuine smile from Benjamin friggin Linus!!!!
“Linus, you’re a real killer.”
Fuckin Smokey, stop using my children for your sick game!
Here’s comes the most emotional speech that’s ever happened on the entire show
“I watched my daughter Alex die in front of me and it was my fault. I had a chance to save her but I chose the island – over her. All in the name of Jacob. I sacrificed everything for him and he didn’t even care.”
“I don’t expect you to forgive me because I can never forgive myself.”
Ben offering his help to Sun and Sun accepting it – HELP!!!
episode 8 – Recon:
The shirt Sawyer’s wearing looks like Richard’s shirt
I feel like Josh Holloway is less buff now than he was at the beginning of the show and I absolutely dig it!
“puppy dog eyes and a sad sunflower”
episode 9 – Ab Aeterno:
Fun story: the first time I watched Ab Aeterno was on Netflix and for some reason the subtitles didn’t work so throughout the entire episode I thought we weren’t supposed to understand the stuff that’s in Spanish
Ilana: So, Richard, what do we do next? – Richard: lol
His backstory is so tragic I’m gonna cry
Anyway, I know I say this about a lot of guys on LOST but… objectively speaking Nestor Carbonell is the most beautiful man on the whole show
I wonder if they’ve always planned for Richard to have come on the Black Rock
“It’s good to see you out of these chains.”
Titus Welliver has similar facial expressions to Terry O’Quinn which makes him perfect for playing the og Smokey
episode 10 – The Package:
Sun, my lovely wife
What is it with her and bumping her head against trees?
BEN FINDS HER!!!! I need Ben and Sun to be friends!!!!
I am so here for a Sun and Ben friendship. Give it to me now!!
I just remembered that Ben will kill Widmore and now I cannot wait!!!
Have I ever noticed that this is actual Mikhail Bakunin in the sideways?!?!
episode 11 – Happily Ever After:
Des, my bebe!!!
Of course Desmond is Charles Widmore’s protégé in the sideways
I love how Desmond’s sideways mission is to reunite everyone with the love of their lives
episode 12 – Everybody Loves Hugo:
Oh, Michael, of course, totally forgot about that
LIBBY MY DARLING!
Bye bye Ilana
Ben’s loyalty to Richard kills me
Dr. Linus protecting John Locke <3
episode 13 – The Last Recruit:
“John Locke was the only one of us who believed in this place.”
Ben going to the hospital with John <3
Season 6 Jack is really attractive
Wait… where’s Ben??
Jack really leaving Claire behind?!?!
Sun and Jin are reunited <3
episode 14 – The Candidate:
Honestly tho… Jack looks 10 times better and it’s all just because of that slight change of his hair style
I feel like I don’t have that much to say about season 6 because nothing really happens, like.. the island plot can pretty much be summed up in one sentence and the sideways are just fluff. I like the fluff but… well… to put it simple: there ain’t enough Ben fluff so I’m not that interested tbh
episode 15 – Across The Sea:
You know… it gets really hard to sympathise with Jacob after this episode. Not that I ever sympathised with him but… he just seems like the annoying dudebro in your modern literature seminar that just won’t shut the fuck up
“One day you can make up your own game and then everyone else will have to follow your rules.”
Mother: I made it so you can never hurt each other. – Jacob: *kills his brother*
Mother and Jacob pretending to love Smokey yet they never even bothered to give him a fucking name?!??!
episode 16 – What They Died For:
Ben hasn’t been on screen for three fucking episodes, where’s my murder cactus???
There’s Ben my bebe! Protecting his island husband!
And there’s Cusick’s miss-calculated punch that landed straight in Emerson’s pretty face
I cannot believe Ben remembers because Desmond is punching him
I kinda want more story surrounding Richard, Miles and Ben
Dr. Linus in the nurse’s office and John being soooo impressed
“Why would somebody hurt you? You’re like the nicest guy ever.”
DANIELLE!!!
I ship sideways Ben and Danielle very very much!!!
“You’re the closest thing to a father she’s ever had.” KILL ME!!!
Ben killing Widmore HELL YES!!!!
“He doesn’t get to save his daughter.”
ANA LUCIA!
episode 17 – The End:
Was Widmore the last person Ben kills? I can’t remember but I hope it is.
“Christian Shephard? Seriously?”
“This would be so sweet if we weren’t all about to die.”
JULIET!
“In case you haven’t noticed – I’m a pilot.”
SHANNON!!! I’ve missed you so much!
“You’re not John Locke. You disrespect his memory by wearing his face.”
Ben saving Hugo from the tree <3
YES KATE!!! “I saved you a bullet.”
The moment when John remembers hits me with very intense #feels
“If the island’s going down I’m going down with it.”
They cannot just mirror a shot of Michael Emerson and expect no one will notice
“I don’t believe in a lot of things but I do believe in duct tape.”
Sawyer and Juliet <3
“Ricky boy”
I always wonder if Jack turns into the new Smokey…. But like… a friendly Smokey.
NOT THE BEN IN FRONT OF THE CHURCH SCENE!!!
“Hello Benjamin.” FUUUUUUCK!
“I’m very sorry for what I did to you, John.”
“Well, if it helps, Ben, I forgive you.”
HURLEY ASKING BEN FOR HELP!!!
“Everybody dies sometime, kiddo.”
Christian LITERALLY says that everything that’s ever happened was real and somehow people still think they were dead the whole time????
Okay the final scene is so awesome tho
The fact that Vincent isn’t in the church can only mean that he is immortal
epilogue – The New Man In Charge:
YAAAASSSS!!!
This is how all of season 6 should have been like!
BEN LOOKS SO FUCKING HOT!!!!
The fact they transferred all the Dharma videos to DVD fills me with joy
“I’m genuinely sorry about that but what’s done is done. I can’t change the past. I can only take responsibility for it.”
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!!! give me season 7 all about how Hurley, Ben and Walt run the island!!!!
