Are there any studies on how this country might've changed if Ford had not pardoned Nixon? Is it likely that the DOJ would've indicated Nixon and is it likely that Nixon would've been impeached and convicted?
Nixon 100% would have been impeached and convicted and removed from office. The House Judiciary Committee had already voted to impeach Nixon about a week-and-a-half before he resigned, so the next step would have been impeachment by the full House of Representatives. That would have triggered the trial in the Senate.
The reason Nixon resigned was because Senate Republican leaders like Barry Goldwater and Hugh Scott went to the White House and told him that he was finished and that even they would be voting to convict him once he was impeached.
Whether or not Nixon would have been indicted if Ford had not pardoned him is hard to know, but at the end of the chapter about President Ford's pardon of Nixon in Richard Norton Smith's recent book, An Ordinary Man: The Surprising Life and Historic Presidency of Gerald R. Ford (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO), Smith reveals:
Among Ford's privately stated reasons for pardoning Nixon was his desire to relieve Special Prosecutor Leon Jaworski of responsibility for deciding the former President's legal fate. The irony of this position was revealed only after he left office. In June 1982, ABC News marked ten years since the Watergate break-in by assembling seven of the twenty-three grand jurors originally summoned to investigate the Nixon White House. As they told it, prosecutors answering to Jaworski had drawn up a four-count indictment charging Nixon with "bribery, conspiracy, obstruction of justice, and obstruction of a criminal investigation." All it required for implementation was a formal jury vote and two signatures -- those of the jury foreman and the special prosecutor. The grand jurors were unanimously prepared to endorse such a course. Jaworski was not. Arguing that no precedent existed for indicting a sitting President, he had persuaded the grand jury to instead forward its evidence to the House Judiciary Committee for possible impeachment proceedings. With Nixon's August 1974 resignation, the issue of Presidential guilt resurfaced. Jaworski's deputy Philip Lacovara argued for an indictment of the now-former President, a view widely held among the prosecutorial staff and seconded by members of the grand jury. Jaworski thought he had suffered enough. In reality, Jaworski had never intended to put Nixon on trial if he could possibly avoid it. Ford's pardon saved him from publicly disclosing this reluctance, something he confided before his death in October 1982 to [former Defense Secretary] Mel Laird and Houston Congressman William Archer, both instrumental in his original appointment.

Hello Mitchell-Stans. Sorry for the hiatus.
I’d like to issue a formal apology to @giveemhell-leonbaby for my past shipping views relating to our babygirl Leon. I started this blog with a judicial prejudice that Leon would not be proud of. I now recognize my closed-mindedness and regret that I hadn’t reflected on my own political biases as someone previously raised and committed to the mid-20th century Republican party.
Following this revelation, I’ve taken it upon myself to consult the primary sources relating to Leon’s correspondences and relationships, and I’ve come to the conclusion that my surface-level sources detailing Nix*n and Leon’s relationship lacked the proper context and research that ought to supplement such serious claims about Leon’s intimate life. @giveemhell-leonbaby had not falsified the truths when detailing the toxic nature of leonix*n’s dynamic. I apologize for any misgivings I had held prior to this post; giveemhell has done nothing but cement their character of “frankness and candor”, as Leon would say.
I swear to do better in future endeavors and to hold truth to its highest standards before forming opinions. “No one is above the law.” I hope this post can mark the beginning of my journey towards real repentance. That’s all.
looking forward to making more content in the future for y’all!!!🥰🥰🌊

The education of Aileen Cannon
July 16, 2024
ROBERT B. HUBBELL
Judge Aileen Cannon is not smart enough to come up with the idea of ignoring controlling precedent to hold that special counsel Jack Smith’s appointment violates the Constitution. Instead, she received not-so-subtle tutoring from six reactionary justices on the US Supreme Court who have signaled that judicial precedent has the binding force of fairy tales—“just so” stories to be invoked when convenient but otherwise irrelevant to the process of judicial decision-making. When precedent is meaningless, the law is rudderless, and we are reduced to judges running popularity contests or selecting random outcomes from a Bingo hopper. To state the obvious, that is not good for the rule of law.
On Monday, Judge Cannon gave Donald Trump a hostess gift for the Republican National Convention. She dismissed the federal indictment against him for unlawfully retaining defense secrets after the National Archive, DOJ, and FBI demanded the return of the documents. To achieve that lawless result, she ignored dozens of other decisions—including binding Supreme Court precedent, which previously held that appointing a special counsel is consistent with the Constitution.
Cannon dared to tell the Supreme Court that its prior acceptance of the validity of special counsel appointments was “dictum”—that is, unnecessary surplusage not relevant to the decision in a case. See Just Security, Judge Cannon Dismisses Trump’s Classified Docs Case: What’s Next?
As explained in Just Security, the Supreme Court upheld a subpoena by special prosecutor Leon Jaworski issued to then President Nixon. Although the Supreme Court did not rule on a challenge to the validity of Jaworski’s appointment in US v. Nixon, the Court did rule on the authority of Jaworski to issue a subpoena to the president. If the Supreme Court believed Jaworski had no authority to issue the subpoena because he was not validly appointed, it would have told him so. It did not. Rather, the Court ruled unanimously in US v. Nixon that the special prosecutor had the authority to issue subpoenas to the president—and that the president was required to comply with those subpoenas.
The justices on the Supreme Court who unanimously joined in the US v. Nixon opinion were Warren Berger, William O. Douglas, William J. Brennan, Potter Stewart, Byron White, Thurgood Marshall, Harry Blackmun and Lewis F. Powell. Several legal giants were included on that bench!
But Judge Cannon rejected the unanimous ruling of those legal giants in US v. Nixon and instead favorably cited the solo dissent of Clarence Thomas in Trump v. US—a case that involved the existence of a legal defense but not the validity of the special counsel’s appointment. None of the other reactionary justices joined in Clarence Thomas’s baseless dissent in Trump v. US in which Thomas claimed that appointment of the special counsel violated the Constitution.
Is Judge Cannon’s lawless decision good? Bad? Both? The answer is a qualified “Both.” Jack Smith has already announced he will appeal the ruling to the 11th Circuit. In a world where the 11th Circuit follows the law, it will overrule Judge Cannon and remove her from the case. That would be a good result.
But what will the Supreme Court do? In a just world where the Supreme Court respects the rule of law and its own precedent, the Court should affirm the reversal of Judge Cannon’s opinion. But after its gonzo ruling in Trump v. US, predicting outcomes in the Supreme Court is dangerous business. See, e.g., Robert Hubbell in this newsletter,
When precedent is meaningless, the law is rudderless, and we are reduced to judges running popularity contests or selecting random outcomes from a Bingo hopper.
Moreover, Judge Cannon has ensured that the defense secrets case cannot be tried until after the 2024 presidential election. No matter. We are precisely where we were before Judge Cannon’s ruling: The courts will not save us. Trump will be held accountable only if Joe Biden wins the 2024 presidential election. We are not merely electing Biden; we are defending the rule of law.

Band of brothers medieval au ,that's just a thought...
anon, your mind….lets take this a step further if you don’t mind me doing so:
knights of the round table au. Now I’ll be honest and admit that my knowledge on King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table is entirely sourced from BBC’s Merlin so you’ll have to bear with me BUTTTTTTTTTT
“We would fight a thousand armies with our bare hands for you. We are never alone. We stand together." -Elyan to Arthur
In this AU I clearly picture Richard as Arthur. Just as in Band of Brothers, we see how quickly Easy Company (led by Lipton and so on) admit they would rather be transferred (or even killed) than to have to serve under Sobel. It’s clear from the beginning who the loyalty of the Company belongs to and that is Winters.
Now there aren't enough Knights of the Round Table to have each member of Easy Company, so I'm going to divide Easy into the Archetypes of each Knight that they most reflect in either all or most aspects (in my opinion!) -Sir Gwaine Archetype: "I think we have no chance. But I wouldn't miss it for the world." Bold, seeing the best in others, flirtatious, confident, fiercely loyal, humorous, throw hands first and ask questions later, and believed that people should be defined by what they did rather than who they were [Guarnere, Toye, Speirs, Talbert] - Sir Lancelot Archetype: "It is not just his deeds that we'll never forget. It is his courage. It is his compassion. His unselfish heart." Kindhearted, compassionate, courageous, humble, loyal and self sacrificing. [Lipton, Roe, Malarkey] -The Sir Elyan Archetype: "He's [Elyan] just one of those types of people, never settles down, never thinks about the future. Just follows his heart wherever it takes him." Affectionate, adventurous, loyal, brave, kind to others, cunning and quick on their feet, giving. [Muck, Skip, Nixon, Liebgott, Luz] -The Sir Leon (THATS MY MAN!) Archetype: "I have fought alongside you [Arthur] so many times, there is no one else I would rather die for." Steadfast, loyal, sensible, knew the difference between courage and foolishness, outspoken, humorous, good natured, self sacrificing for the greater good [Martin, Buck, also Lipton] -The Sir Percival Archetype: "Your enemies are my enemies" Quiet, man of few words, skilled, brave, gentle and softhearted, decisive, mischievous in the right company. [Shifty, Bull, Babe, Skinny]
Prince Richard presents his plan to stop an evil that has grown so powerful and destructive that he isn't sure he can actually succeed but he vows that he will try anyway. He doesn't ask his friends for help, but one by one they pledge their aid to him.
The Knights that Richard chooses aren’t all nobility nor are they approved by the King. They are simply men who have shown unwavering loyalty and love to him, they are men he trusts. And they are there when he has no one else, and they commit themselves to his cause knowing full well that they might not survive. Their numbers aren't many (only 5 Knights with any skill in battle and 3 honorary members) but they are steadfast and skilled.
After Richard establishes the Knights of the Round table, he would later abolish The First Code of Camelot that states that only men of noble blood can be Knights. After all, blood does not make the man. It's his actions and loyalty that do.
I do absolutely adore the idea of the Knights (Easy) wearing red cloaks and armor like the Knights do in Merlin. It's so dramatic and I think it should be allowed *bangs gavel*
Something something the Knights were so deeply loyal to one another that it bordered on something more than platonic something something the dedication to one another that after the death of their leader there was too much grief to continue on something something.....
While the Knights are meant to be a symbol of the realm and its power, I also see them as representative of the common people, especially in the BBC Merlin version after the Round Table is established. These are men who have come from varied backgrounds and experiences and there's not a way that they wouldn't be seen as what could be for the future.
watch this video and tell me i'm wrong (pls don't tell me i'm wrong)

Hello! I’m Bug!
I have MaDD and have (after many months of observation) fallen in love with the community here!
I’m a minor so please don’t interact if you have a prom blog or anything else explicit :)
I’m Trans and my pronouns are He/They. I’m also Bi. Bug is my paraself's name, not my real one. I have AuDHD and anxiety. This blog will probably be only MaDD stuff but if anyone wants to talk about disability/queer stuff I will gladly join! I’m also from the US (please help).
Please please please interact with me!!! I’m here to make new friends! I only learned about this disorder last year and it was as if a huge weight had been lifted. It’s so nice to know I’m not alone. I’ve had it all my life so I can definitely talk quite a lot about it but I’m not so confident with new language and vocabulary.
Thanks for taking the time to get to know me! I hope we can be friends :)
Side note: When I follow you it’ll be from @galaxyofjedi
My paras!!!
I’ll add links as make posts about them

If you're up for some random-ass questions, here are some questions for the new year!
what fic were you proudest of this year?
what fic are you most surprised you wrote?
favorite old (to you) ship this year
favorite new (to you) ship this year
favorite old (to you) ship you picked up again this year
favorite old man (old man being a state of mind not gender) ship (maybe you ship a younger version of them but they're Old Men now)
ships/characters you're excited about in 2024
fics/plot bunnies you're excited about working on in 2024
give a random prediction of any kind - about your own writing, about your fandom's fic trends, about canonical developments in your fandom
share a random thought about fics you've written, characters you're thinking about, writing in general, etc
Feel free to pass on if you'd like, or not! Happy new year!
thank you anon! what a great excuse to ignore the work computer. also consider this a blanket "steal these prompts" from me for whoever is so moved bc i don't want to tag everyone
what fic were you proudest of this year? i might have to say only fools rush in aka marriage bets! it certainly is the longest one i've written and had the longest gestational period. plus i wrote a lot of it while incredibly busy (tho maybe that helped?). im still happy i managed to hit the balance between ridiculous premise and genuine feeling that i was aiming for, and that i managed to figure out and feel comfortable in a new pov.
what fic are you most surprised you wrote? linger. if you told me a year ago i was gonna write 65k of omegaverse i simply would not have believed you! it wasn't a trope i ever thought i would write! and yet here we are. lmao.
favorite old (to you) ship this year? i mean. viva la ratfiction. someday we may run out of steam but not this year by golly!
favorite new (to you) ship this year? the amount brady/quinn clawed its way into my brain this year cannot be overstated. maybe i was exploring last year but this year is when it really got me in a fucking chokehold. the pining! the friends to lovers of it all!!!!! exquisite. honorable mention to matthew/sasha. those two ARE in love.
favorite old (to you) ship you picked up again this year? earlier this fall i started a rewatch of miss fisher's murder mysteries and god. jack and phryne. they are EVERYTHING. someday i really will write fic for them.
favorite old man (state of mind) ship? gotta be honest first thing that came to mind was band of brothers winters/nixon. we'll go to chicago. i'll take you there.
ships/characters you're excited about in 2024? hmm brady/quinn, obvi. the general state of brady tkachuk and how i'd like to give him a midlife crisis and by midlife i mean when he's 29. jamie and trevor are BACK baby, and i wanna make trevor sad and making poor choices for 50k before he finally gets to get kissed. has someone written timmy stu and mo seider as summer boyfriends yet? bc i still like that.
fics/plot bunnies you're excited about working on in 2024? i think i have tentatively figured out my next long matthew/leon project (which i can't start until the new year) but i don't want to say quite yet in case i scare it off but! that. it WILL be a true slow burn which will be fun. also ballet quinn i WOULD like to put more than 2k in your gdoc. hopefully at some point soon inspiration will hit again/i'll feel less dull and burnt out
give a random prediction of any kind - about your own writing, about fandom trends, about canonical developments in your fandom: the kraken will sign yamo to a longer contract. i will start a project thinking it will be nice and short and then watch it double, like bread dough rising.
share a random thought about fics you've written, characters you're thinking about, writing in general: did you know the more you write the better you get? even though there’s plenty of areas where i want to improve and become a stronger, more thoughtful developer of sentences/plots/et cetera, i can really see my growth from month to month or year to year and that's neat!!! i'm slowly getting better!!!

Did you know the SR-71 Blackbird sonic booms shattered the windows of Kelly Johnson, Zsa Zsa Gabor and President Nixon’s houses?
What do Zsa Zsa Gabor, President Nixon, and Kelly Johnson all have in common?
Sonic booms!
‘Obviously the SR 71 broke the sound barrier to get up to 85,000 feet and a speed of 3.2 Mach,’ explains Linda Sheffield Miller (Col Richard (Butch) Sheffield’s daughter, Col. Sheffield was an SR-71 Reconnaissance Systems Officer) on her Facebook Page Habubrats. ‘Often, I would look at the windows of our house at Beale [Air Force Base, AFB] and watched them shake so hard I thought they would break!
‘The SR-71 tried to stay away from major cities, but occasionally it would happen over a large city like Los Angeles.
‘Zsa Zsa Gabor called the police to complain after the London to Los Angeles speed run. Her windows were (supposedly) shattered in her Hollywood hills home. She was appeased when pilot Buck Adams and RSO Bill Machoreck went to her house and gave her personal autograph
Did you know the SR-71 Blackbird sonic booms shattered the windows of Kelly Johnson, Zsa Zsa Gabor and President Nixon’s houses?
Zsa Zsa Gabor
‘President Nixon called the Air Force to complain when the sonic booms broke the windows in his home in Southern California. Even though it was himself who ordered sonic booms 15 seconds apart to be delivered by the SR-71 over the Hanoi Hilton.’
Did you know the SR-71 Blackbird sonic booms shattered the windows of Kelly Johnson, Zsa Zsa Gabor and President Nixon’s houses?
President Nixon on the phone in the oval office
Sonic Booms
Sheffield Miller continues;
‘With aircraft, this phenomenon is caused by bow and stern waves — traveling at the speed of sound getting forced together (or compressed) because they cant get out of the way of the faster moving plane. In “smooth flight” the united wave — now a shock wave — starts at the nose of the aircraft and ends at the tail. As the plane passes through, the wave attains a pressure imbalance (called an “N” wave due to its shape) and that’s when the boom happens.
‘The following video features the Audio Recording of SR-71 Blackbird Sonic Booms. Listen here to hear what a double sonic boom sounds like!
youtube
‘In reality, there are two booms that happen. One when that reaches the observer and one when the pressure returns to normal.’
Sheffield Miller concludes;
Did you know the SR-71 Blackbird sonic booms shattered the windows of Kelly Johnson, Zaza Gabor and President Nixon’s houses?
Kelly Johnson
‘Kelly Johnson [The head of Lockheed’s Vaunted Skunk Works, the division that developed the SR-71 Blackbird itself] had a busy life outside Lockheed. He and his wife Althea Louise Young built a house in Encino, in the San Fernando Valley, 10 miles west of Lockheed’s facilities. They kept horses, and eventually acquired a working ranch, Star Lane, in the Santa Ynez Valley, north of Santa Barbara. Johnson maintained his own farm machinery in a 4,800-square-foot shop that he had built, and whose huge size and strong construction were a source of pride for him. The rumor is… that a test flight SR-71 flew over Johnson’s ranch and broke several of his large windows. But he didn’t have the nerve to make a complaint.’

Russell Means was denounced multiple times by the American Indian Movement for misrepresenting AIM positions, continuing to present himself as a leader of the movement after he resigned, representing himself as a cofounder of the movement which he was not, generally being a grifter, assaulting his father-in-law, supporting the Contras in Nicaragua, inaccurately portraying Amrican Indians in Pocahontas and Natural Born Killers, pandering to right-wing politicians, and other things.
Just a few quotes, but there's a lot in the linked statement:
"What is especially egregious, and outrageous about Russell Mean's violations of the laws of the Dine Nation is that he is charged with assault and battery against his father-in-law, Mr. Leon Grant who is a revered elder of both the Omaha and Dine Nation and is 80 years of age and has an artificial arm. We, of the American Indian Movement Grand Governing Council are no longer surprised by Russell's clownish antics. He continues to deceitfully mis-represent the American Indian Movement in order to deceive those peoples and organizations worldwide, who due to their goodwill, and support of the Indian cause may have already, or will contribute to his appeal through his personal web page where he solicits money for the Russell Means Philanthropy and AIM Club Membership in name of the American Indian Movement, and an "Immersion Indian School" that never existed, nor does it exist at this time."
...
"Bellecourt also sought to distance AIM from what he described as Means' recent forays into conservative politics. In the 1980's means traveled to Nicaragua to help rebel bands of Miskito Indians who were allied with the anti-revolutionary Contras. Means was being manipulated by reactionary elements under the guise of patriotism, Bellecourt said. He believes Means has allied himself with reactionary elements who seek to discredit AIM, a campaign which goes back, in one form or other, to the Nixon administration."
...
"In 1985, he again resigned from Yellow Thunder Camp in the Black Hills stating, quote, "I'm tired babysitting Yellow Thunder Camp," and that he was going to go on to other interests. Those interests was to align himself with Ward Churchill, Glen Morris, and Brooklyn Rivera of the CIA-sponsored Miskito Indian faction of the contras, as well, Elliot Abrams, and the Reagan Administration's war against the Nicaraguan people of which the Miskito Indian people, and all Nicaraguans are the principal victims.
During this time he went on a nationwide speaking tour sponsored by the Unification Church of the Reverend SunYung Moon, speaking to right wing audiences. The same groups who are totally opposed to Indian treaty, political, jurisdiction, water, natural resources, and territorial rights."
...
In other words, Russell Means is not someone to listen to when it comes to indigenous liberation.
Speech given by Russell Means of the Oglala Lakota tribe in 1980.
