Leola giving magic to humans out of curiosity, with no harmful intentions, but it nonetheless causing much pain, "the beginning of the end," etc, made me think about the myth of Pandora's box.
(it's a very well-known myth, but I'll summarize it quickly)
The olympians gave Pandora a box- and instructed her not to open it. She didn't... for a while. One day, she simply got too curious, and opened the box. By opening it, she unleashed horrors unto the world. Greed, madness, death, sorrow, etc. but there was something else in the box. Hope. (hope was released eventually, just much later.)
Obviously, all the awful things unleashed from Pandora's box can be easily tied to dark magic. Leola unintentionally released all of that into the world by "gifting" humans with magic. So many awful things happened due to that. However, something good did come out of that. That "hope," I believe, is Callum. He is hope. His magic is still human magic, sure, but that is only true because he's a human. It's not dark magic. He is the good thing to come out of Leola's last wish, hope out of Pandora's box.

Something something the South Star, aka Leola's Last Wish, being what is used to find your way home, and Rayla being Callum's star and home and Leola was executed for her sharing and kindness and I DON'T KNOW WHAT IT MEANS BUT I DON'T LIKE IT

Note
While the stars turn their heads to your kindness, the earth opens it's arms.
The sky welcomes you onto it's brace, the sun and the moon wrapping themselves around you like a blanket, if even for a moment.
An ocean becomes your home.
Everything will be ok, even from an outsider looking in.

I was scared.
I think daddy was scared, too..

Something I wonder about is who (in canon) first depicted Leola on the star chart? Since as much as this is an image of her (probably an old design going from a Doylist perspective), it's not...her.
Tumblr media
The clothes are just about right, but the big stars on her cheeks, the shape of her horn, the way her hair isn't tied back and clipped. Her hair is shorter than it was.
Which then of course takes me to Aaravos having to see this depiction of his daughter every time he sees a star chart - this weird approximation of his child in her most vulnerable moment. Probably with very little input from him. Baffled that somehow it's an honor for her to be placed in the star charts.
(Though it also kinda takes me to a side HC that should she not have burned in impact, Aaravos took out her hair clips and tie while he was grieving, but couldn't bear to undo her braids)

Like guys I was PHYSICALLY gripping the spot where my heart is on the inside laid down on my knees on my bed cause I was sitting on my knees already so maybe should say leaned forward as I watched the scenes CRYING and SCREAMING and PLEADING as if they would and could hear me for them not to kill her for them not to do it but it was futile as they could not hear me and if they would not hear the me on the screen and spare her why would they hear me now and spare her?

Three more thoughts.
If Startouch elves are immortal, does it mean that Leola didn't die? Then what the hell happened to her?.. Did she ever show up in the world again when her stars aligned with it? Or was her death really...final?
Leola was shown playing with a human girl and a Moonshadow boy. I can't really draw any parallels but it somehow reminds me of Callum, Ezran and Rayla... Also, if this happened at the dawn of time, could that little boyo be Garlaath? Because Rayla said as a joke, that Leola could be a friend of Garlaath's.
What was her last wish? *sobbing* And y'know, if she somehow told her friends about her wish, then it explained why Moonshadow elves know about it.
I don't need sleep, I need answers.

So I'm rereading Patience and Ripples and I noticed something...
The photo of Aaravos in the rain clearly shows him crying.
Tumblr media
You can see the streak of water start right about where his eye is, right down his cheek. This had me thinking, isn't this moment quiet similar to this one...?
Tumblr media
And in this, Aaravos is looking at a reflecting of himself. Not only do we see a mirror/reflection motif (in both the shows and the stories), it also sheds some light on our Startouch Elf's situation...
He references a fallen star in Ripples. Pretty sure that he and it are one in the same.
He also keeps references how the other Startouch Elves are arrogant, too caught up in themselves and their own greatness to notice how small actions (ie, humans - particularly, how the wise human touches the water and literally causes it to ripple or 'distort their reflection') can have huge consequences.
Aaravos does not like his Startouch Brethren. He does not speak highly of them in either stories.
On the contrary, while he acknowledges that humans have weaknesses (and talks down upon them tbh), he also credits them for teaching him two valuable lessons - patience and consequences (ie, 'ripples').
I would say the first image - the one of Aaravos crying in the rain - is a teaser and a throwback to whatever conversation he is having with The Merciful One - who, as I have already posted, is probably not that merciful. And you know the creators have all this planned out already and love to drop little hints without us even knowing what's happening.
This is all really fascinating food for thought as we head into S6. I already mentioned that Aaravos is going to be regarded in a sympathetic light. My bets are that he was cast away by his own people (perhaps over someone he loved, as he references love in the S6 teaser - yes plz) and has something to prove to the other Startouch Elves who outcasted him - be it revenge or something similar, who knows.
Damn. I do love this show.

Counting candles in this eternal night
Brief thoughts on Sol Regem, Aaravos, and what it might be like to be ghosted by the stars.
When Karim and Pharos first visit Sol Regem in Karim's plan to reinstate him as King of the Dragons, they find the former sun king in a cave, enveloped in darkness and shadow.
Sol Regem cynically lists out the remnants of his greatness - his tattered wings, his bedsores, his inability to act. At one point, he lowers his face to Karim, showing him the mask of melted flesh around his eyes, the work of "evil" magic.
In the flashback in 03x01, after Sol Regem is hit by Ziard's (swoon) fire, we see a very, shall we say, interesting series of events.
Sol Regem flies up into the sky, aligning directly with the sun - a star - racing toward its golden light.
Tumblr media
He falls, plunges straight toward twinkling purple water.
Tumblr media
He sinks into the depths, the flames of the spell finally extinguishing around his eyes. When he reemerges, Sol Regem will discover his sight is gone.
Tumblr media
It's all so...Aaravos-coded.
Tumblr media
"The sun will never rise again for me," Sol Regem tells Karim back in the cave. Sol Regem knows that his former glory will never be restored, implies that the situation is more than acquired blindness.
But it is also a literal truth - Sol Regem will never physically see an actual sunrise again.
So if the Starfolk were to ghost you, deny you their faces, does the night sky become a black pit, devoid of any light?
And what about in the day? What happens when the sun hides her face from you, and only you?
Tumblr media
Is the concept of "day" meaningless to you now? Do you count candles long before you become imprisoned?
And when you get the chance, do you share the sun's gift with her children, so that they may know the depth of her love like you do?
