Glee and Days of Our Lives

So, ten years ago, some people on here compared some Glee characters (well, the gay characters) to DOOL's gay characters.

-They said Burt Hummel and Justin Kiriakis were the best fathers ever (Justin way less so than Burt, but he's still a pretty good dad. Mostly.)

-They said Glee should take notes from DOOL and have their gay couple talk things out.

-They wanted Blaine to give a long, anguished declaration of love to an unconscious Kurt the same way Sonny did for Will when he was in the hospital.

-When Sonny first appeared on the show, someone on Daytime Royalty said they also need a "Karofsky" type character (and they kind of got their wish with Paul).

Lately, I've realized...

Paul is Karofsky's good counterpart (which is funny, since Karofsky's dad's name is Paul). Both were athletes who hid their sexualities. Paul handled it way better (Although, he was older and more mature, so...) and pursued men who were already taken and they knew it.

Leo is Kurt's evil counterpart. Both dress flamboyantly, use expensive facial products, and both are besties with an overly ambitious and obnoxious brunette woman.

Will is Blaine's morally grey counterpart. Both cheated on their SOs because they felt lonely, both are married and have a daughter, and both pursued a career writing stories based on their own personal experiences (Will in screenwriting, Blaine being a playwright), and both became a big brother mentor to someone who was confused about their sexuality (Will to his sister Allie and Blaine to Kurt. Okay, Blaine is younger than Kurt, but still.)

Sonny and Kurt have a few things in common, too. Both are a little bi-phobic, both lost their moms and took it really hard, their boyfriends (husband in Sonny's case) cheated on them, they both have a parent who got cancer and they became despondent over that, and they both have a daughter.

Sigh. I've been wanting to write a fanfic where they meet, and it looks like when Will and Sonny left for New Zealand, it'd be the perfect time. But, is New York a layover on the way to NZ from Illinois or is California?

One reason why Agents of SHIELD is one of the more interesting Marvel/MCU projects out there is that you can pinpoint the moment where Marvel started to lose interest in the show and gave more creative freedom to the showrunners. Because at the start, it was just a glorified vehicle to advertise Phase 2. There was the direct tie-in to Iron Man 3 and the Thor: The Dark World episode.

But then, near the end of season 1 and throughout season 2, you can tell that Marvel Studios started to care less and less about the show and, thus, gave more leeway to the showrunners to do what they want. And this slowly led to the show becoming darker, edgier, and grittier. I think since the show was starting to become less of a season-long commercial for the movies, the showrunners didn’t have to be so family friendly anymore.

Let me put it like this. In season 1, you had an episode where Fitz and Simmons were working on pranks to do on the crew. Also, Skye being outed as a cosplayer and the gag scene where Fitz got stuck at a door.

In season 4, the season literally starts with a Daisy Johnson panty shot, followed by Ghost Rider murdering white supremacists. It’s not even subtle violence, a character gets covered in someone else’s blood, with the implication that Ghost Rider tore that dude’s neck or something.

If you weren’t there at the time, I can’t stress enough just how different the show felt when season 4 came along.

I hate when a show/movie is trying to show that like “we’re stronger together than we are apart!” so they have to write in conflict for the characters and make them all be mean to each other and all it does is pit everyone in the fandom against each other, and then the characters forgive each other and learn lessons about friendship, and the fandom is still on fire and never quite the same

cc!leo is so weird and fun to write because i have to capture the spectrum of him impossibly gentle and caring, goofy and nonchalant to make everyone feel better, and INSANELY invested in the prospect of brutally murdering someone all at the same time and writing ch23 really illuminates that for me lmao. like the characters just kind of take me places that i dont expect and apparently the answer to "what happens when you strip leo of all his layers of facade and make him forced to hurt the most important person in his life through horrifying mind control?" in this extremely specific instance was uhhhh. Bloodthirsty! apparently

If only there was some way to get through the impossibly thick skin of showrunners (from producers to directors to writers — anyone who has a say in the matter) that writing off a character from your show does not always mean: a) DEATH and/or b) COMPLETE CHARACTER ASSASSINATION that totally overlooks said character's development & induces a personality transplant!!!!!

It's sad because it just ruins everything that character stands for on a show, and boy oh boy if they're part of a romantic pair, it's destructive because there end up being 2 victims — the one who's being written off & the one who's still here. Honestly feels like an insult to the characters (and the actors who bring them to life) in some cases.

Some characters that were dealt this hand, off the top of my head:

Dr Lisa Cuddy (House MD)

Dr Helen Sharpe (New Amsterdam)

Dr Sarah Reese (Chicago Med)

Honestly, this one just hurts. So much potential down the drain because she was just used as a character that never really knew what to do & they kept ruining her.

Special mention (because I understand but also no?): I keep thinking of Leo Hendrie from Chasing Life — I kind of get it; the actor was always credited as a guest star & ultimately it was a show about cancer so someone had to die if not the lead character (April Carver), but one week after their wedding?! Cop out, I tell you!

Goodness me, I have so many feelings & thoughts about this but not much energy, so this will have to do.
