4. Garden
Kara waited as long as she could. Taking to the air, she lifted herself to cloud-height, ignoring the bite of the upper-atmospheric chill as the high winds snapped at her cape. Hovering in the air, she took a moment to unbind her senses, expanding her awareness to let in the cacophony of sounds she usually suppressed through years of focused willpower and concentration.
She rocked in the air, shocked by the sensitivity of her own ears. Jeremiah and then Eliza had taught her this, made the world in its vastness small enough that she could live in it.
Clark had taught her to reach out, to hear, as well as see and smell and taste and feel, beyond. Sol’s gentle kiss did more than expand her awareness and multiply her strength, it activated pathways in her brain itself, giving her a control over her senses that she could never match under a red star.
It took only moments to sift out the quiet sounds of Lena’s pulse and her gentle, hissing breaths as she fought back sobs.
Air folded around her as she shatters the sound barrier, flying high enough that the boom that followed her would be a mere puff to the ground. Another trick she picked up from Clark, using the earth’s rotation to speed her flight.
Kara touched down at a familiar but foreboding place: the Luthor estate.
All that had been the property of her family was hers now, a gift and a curse. Lena had talked about making it an orphanage or a long-term care hospital or a new children’s medical campus, but the building itself had held her back. What malevolent secrets had Lex left behind? Booby traps? Sentinel robots hiding in the walls? Caches of weapons or Lexosuits?
A Kryptonite bomb, to spit death at her for hate’s sake?
Kara hesitated, but Lena was here and upset. She went inside.
It was immediately obvious where Lex had reinforced walls and lined rooms with lead. Kara listened for Lena, finding that the trail of sound led her outside.
She had to use her x-ray vision.
Lena was kneeling in an hidden place, a walled off section of the formal gardens. Kara found the entrance cleverly disguised, a section of wall where one slipped through a gap and turned left then right and came out in a tiny, overgrown courtyard.
Kneeling, Lena was surrounded by pruning shears and garden implements, dressed to work outside. She looked so out of place it was almost a little silly to see, but there she was.
Kara could see that Lena had already been working on cleaning and clearing. She knelt before a small plumeria plant, resting in a well kept pot.
“Lex let it all die,” said Lena. “He knew it was here. He could have kept it for me, but he didn’t. I suppose I’m lucky that Lillian didn’t rip it up and install a septic tank.”
Kara walked over, standing next to her.
“My father built this. It’s a replica of my mother’s garden. We had a little walled garden next to the cottage where I lived with her before I came to live with the Luthors.”
Kara said nothing, instead brushing a lock of Lena’s now-curly hair back from her shoulder.
“He never showed it to me.”
“Why?”
“My parentage was his dirtiest secret. Lillian didn’t even tell me until she thought she could use it.”
“Do you think he loved her?”
“I have no idea. He loved me, I think. He loved Lex but in a different way. I don’t think he even liked Lillian.”
“You’ve never told me about him.”
“It wasn’t easy being his child. He drank too much, neglected the company, and drank more when things went badly for us. The family was actually in trouble until Lex turned it around. He started managing things when I was in grade school. By the end, he’d spend all day in his study and I’d spend half the night sitting with him while he talked and told me stories. Lillian hated him for it.”
“You miss him.”
“I miss them both. I miss Lex. I miss him so much. I mourn him every day.”
“I know,” said Kara.
“My mom died, my father died, my brother went insane.”
“Lena…”
“Is it me?”
“It’s not, you know it’s not.”
“Is it my witch blood? Am I cursed?”
Kara knelt beside her, pulling her cape across Lena’s shoulders to fight the autumn chill. Lena leaned into her.
“What if it is a curse? What if it gets our little one too?”
Kara put her hand on Lena’s belly, spreading her fingers. There was no bump yet. Kara listened intently, eagerly awaiting a moment she would never forget, when a second heartbeat joined Lena’s. It hadn’t come yet but it would.
“Nothing is going to get our baby,” said Kara. “Their moms are Supergirl and Lena Luthor. We can do anything.”
“It’s going to be a children’s hospital,” said Lena. “The house. A lot of the grounds are going to be torn out, but I’m keeping this garden. I’m going to give my mom a memorial. I think I might put one in for my dad, too.”
“I love you,” Kara murmured. “I love you so much.”
Lena leaned into her and Kara sat down to pull her in.
They sat for a long time, and listened to the wind that shook the leaves.

Supercorptober Day 21: "Lavender"
Read on A03 instead
Lena stands in the hallway playing nervously with the key in her hands. A key she’s surprised she still has. She's stood in front of this exact door a hundred (a thousand?) times, used the key to let herself in at least a few dozen times, probably more - yet here she was, unable to force herself to turn the knob. She’s not really sure how long she stands there, but at some point, she finally takes a deep breath to steady herself, squares her shoulders, and lets herself into Kara’s apartment.
It hurts more than she expected it to, being back here. The last time she was in this apartment Lena had come to tell Kara she was wrong about Non Nocere, to ask for forgiveness - and then ended up with Alex’s gun pointed at her head. It’s not exactly a fond memory. Before that, it had been nearly half a year, back when Lena still came over for movie nights and cuddles on the couch. Before Lena found out about Kara’s secret identity in the worst possible way and everything went to shit.
And now Kara is gone. The apartment is quiet and achingly empty without the joyful sound of her laughter to fill it up. It’s been three days since Lena’s deranged half-brother sent Kara to the phantom zone - fucking Lex - and the super friends still have no idea how to rescue her. Lena’s not sure Kara would even want her here, with their friendship still on rocky terms, but she just needed something , some kind of connection, some reminder to keep her from giving up hope.
The apartment hasn’t changed all that much from what Lena remembers, at least as far as she can tell. She walks slowly around the space, taking in all the details she’s seen so many times before, but that suddenly carry so much more weight now because the details are so uniquely Kara. The fluffy blankets on the couch. A blue coffee mug on the kitchen counter with a red supergirl logo and yellow writing that says “Have a SUPER day!” (a gift from Nia), and another mug next to it covered in a pattern of brightly colored donuts. The easel in the corner with some of Kara’s paintings propped against the legs and her box of painting supplies next to it. The assortment of different sized picture frames scattered throughout the spacious loft on various tables and shelves, filled with smiling photos of Kara’s family and friends. Lena stops short when she realizes the picture of her and Kara together is gone from the shelf where it used to sit. It shouldn’t surprise her, after all the hurt she caused, but it still stings - more than it should, considering Lena smashed her own framed picture of them with a whiskey glass. She squeezes her eyes shut and forces herself to swallow the lump forming in her throat.
For whatever reason, Lena decides to wander past the partition into the space Kara uses as her bedroom, running her hand over the familiar blue and green patterned comforter on Kara’s bed. When she glances at the bedside table, she feels her heart stop. Kara didn’t get rid of the picture of her and Lena - it’s right there, on the table next to her bed. Right where she would see it every morning and every night. But why? Why would she want to look at that after everything?
It’s all of a sudden too much for Lena, and she sinks down heavily on the edge of the bed. She can’t stop the hiccuping sob that claws its way out of her chest or the tears gathering in the corners of her eyes, so she grabs one of Kara’s pillows and squeezes it to her body as tight as she can. As she does, her nose tingles with the lingering scent of lavender and vanilla. Kara. Years of being best friends (years of being in love with her best friend), Lena knows that scent, one she used to breathe in and try to memorize every time she and Kara shared a hug or snuggled up on the couch together.
She’d give anything to hug Kara again.
The sharp pang of her anguish cuts into her like a knife twisting in her stomach, and suddenly she feels like she is drowning under a tidal wave of emotions. She clutches desperately at Kara’s pillow and rocks herself back and forth, while she cries deep gasping sobs that feel like they are being ripped from her lungs. Her eyes burn from the hot tears that are now streaming relentlessly down her face, dripping onto the pillow and sliding down her neck to soak the collar of her shirt. Once again, she feels like her heart is being cracked open, but this, this is infinitely more painful. This isn’t just some fight between friends, this is her possibly losing Kara forever. She doesn’t think she can live with that possibility.
“I’m so sorry Kara.” Lena chokes out between labored breaths. “I’m so so sorry. This is all my fault. I promise I’ll find a way to bring you home. I promise.” Her voice cracks on the last words, her throat so raw she can barely speak above a whisper.
Lena cries until exhaustion wins out, until her body hurts as much as her heart, and she has no more tears left to cry. When her breathing finally returns to normal, she decides it’s time to pull herself together and go back to her own apartment. She can’t stay here any longer, it’s just too painful of a reminder of Kara’s absence, and Lena needs to be focused if she’s going to help the team find their missing friend. She breathes in one more deep breath of the lavender and vanilla scented pillow, trying to commit the smell to memory before she leaves.
She’s about to walk out the door when she stops herself. She turns around and walks back to the couch, where she picks up one of the fluffy blankets Kara always keeps there. One they used to share, with popcorn, and chinese takeout, and hot chocolate, and stories about their respective days. One that still smells like Kara. She takes it with her so she can have just one little piece of Kara to hold onto, a reminder of what she used to have, of who she is still fighting for.
———
When Lena gets back to her penthouse, she carefully removes the picture of her and Kara from the broken frame and puts it in a new one. She falls asleep with Kara’s blanket wrapped around her and the picture clutched to her chest.
———
Lena returns to Kara’s loft a week later when the blanket finally loses its scent. Kara is still gone, and the apartment is still too quiet and lifeless. Lena’s heart still feels like it’s been hacked open by a dull axe.
She lets herself curl up on the couch for a moment, finding the other blanket she had left here last time and pulling it tightly around her, breathing in the familiar smell. She imagines Kara cozying up on the couch next to her, socked feet tucked under her legs, her head resting on Lena’s shoulder, blonde hair tickling her neck. She thinks about all the times she wished their cuddling would turn into something more, how she wished she could have had the courage to tell Kara how she felt.
“Kara…” she pleads to the void. “Please come back Kara. I’m so sorry. For everything. I miss you so much.”
“Please… I love you.”
The blanket is wet with tears when the whispered confession floats away into the silence of the empty apartment.
———
Lena ends up staying at Kara’s apartment. She told herself it would be too painful, but it turns out her crippling misery was determined to follow her no matter where she went. So she surrenders, and just lets herself be surrounded by everything Kara. It hurts, but there are also happy memories here, ones Lena wants to hold close to her heart for as long as possible.
———
Another week and a half drags by, and then by some miracle, the super friends are finally able to rescue Kara from the phantom zone (with help from Lena’s yellow sun grenades, which she is very proud of, as she should be). When Kara stumbles onto the ship and collapses into her sister’s arms, everyone can tell that she is physically and emotionally drained. There’s no time for pleasantries or conversation - Kara needs to be taken as quickly as possible to the med bay for a full exam and to get her onto a yellow sun bed so her body can begin to heal.
It’s two full days later when Kara is finally recovered enough for the super friends to throw her a welcome back party at the Tower. Meanwhile, Lena’s anxiety is at an all-time high. Her and Kara’s friendship was in a shaky place when everything went down with Lex, and Lena doesn’t know if Kara blames her for what happened. She doesn’t know what Kara may have experienced in the phantom zone and how that might affect her. Trauma does strange things to people, Lena knows that from firsthand experience. Is Kara even the same person anymore? Will Kara still want Lena in her life?
The first positive sign is that when Kara enters the common room to the sight of donuts, flowers, balloons, and her friends and family gathered around, her face immediately breaks out into a genuine Kara Danvers smile, all full of white teeth, dimples on display and eyes crinkling at the corners. She still seems a bit tired and perhaps a little more reserved than usual, but otherwise very much still herself, and everyone breathes a collective sigh of relief.
Kara works her way around the room exchanging hugs, each team member expressing their joy at having her back, and Kara expressing her own joy and gratitude in return. Lena is the last one left, and she feels her heart flutter and her throat go dry when Kara’s eyes meet hers. The superhero nods her head towards Lena with a fond smile and her arms open wide, and it takes all of Lena’s willpower to force herself to walk when all she wants to do is run at full speed into Kara’s warm embrace. When their bodies finally meet and they melt into each other, everything feels right again. Like all the empty spaces in Lena’s heart are being filled back up and every ache and pain in her soul is being soothed by Kara’s presence. She’s home. She’s home. She’s finally home.
“It’s only because you’re on the team that I’m here,” Kara murmurs in Lena’s ear. She squeezes her so tightly it almost hurts, but Lena just squeezes back as tightly as her own strength will allow her. She feels the tears sliding down her cheeks and takes a deep breath through her sniffles, trying her best to hold herself together. When Kara finally pulls back, she pauses for a moment, her hands drifting to Lena’s shoulders. She cocks her head to the side and looks at Lena with a soft smile on her face and a gentle question in her eyes. “Your scent… vanilla and lavender…?”
Lena knows exactly what she is asking, because Lena usually smells like her expensive perfume, or her coconut and hibiscus scented shampoo. And there are a thousand ways Lena wants to answer that question, a thousand things she wants to tell Kara that she can’t put into words just yet. So she tries to pour all her emotions into a single sentence, and hopes Kara understands. She bites her lip to stop it from quivering and gives a tiny shrug, before she answers in a small shaky voice. “I really missed you.” She ducks her head down and tries to swallow, her throat constricted with emotion. She gathers what courage she can to open herself up, to lift her head and make another confession, whispered so softly only Kara can hear her. “The only thing that kept me going was the hope that I would get to see you again.”
Kara is silent for a minute as she stares into Lena’s glassy green eyes, her own tear-brimmed blue eyes searching Lena’s face for some hidden truth. Lena wills her to find it, to see all the love Lena holds in her heart for her. She wills Kara to hear the way that same heart is currently hammering against her ribs, even while it feels like it's stuck in her throat.
When it seems like Kara has found what she is looking for, she whispers back, her own voice cracking just a little. “I really missed you too.”
There’s a weight to the way Kara says it, the words feeling charged with hidden significance. Lena's thoughts go to the picture of them she found on Kara’s nightstand, and wonders - could she…?  Now it’s her turn to search Kara’s face for answers, and as she does, she finds herself looking into a longing gaze, blue eyes filled with overwhelming affection, and sparking with a sudden fire she’s never seen before. Kara moves her right hand from Lena’s shoulder to softly cup the side of her face, her thumb gently wiping away a tear from her cheek. Lena lets her eyes flutter closed for a second as she leans into the warm touch. There’s a moment between them, a low buzzing electric current connecting their bodies, air thick with anticipation, a silent conversation with their eyes. Kara's eyes flit to Lena's lips, nodding her head almost imperceptibly, and then she leans her body closer to Lena’s, drawing them both towards the inevitable.
The collision course they are on is abruptly derailed by Alex, completely oblivious to the moment of intimacy she just interrupted. “Apologies from Kelly, she really wishes she could be here, but she had a full day of orientation at Social Services.”
Lena reluctantly steps back to allow the sisters to talk, but she can’t help noticing the way Kara's shoulders droop ever so slightly, and the look of disappointment on her face. A sentiment Lena definitely shares.
(What she doesn’t see is the way Alex glances between her and Kara, and the fleeting moment of realization in the older Danvers’ eyes, followed immediately by a quick flash of guilt, as she puts two and two together).
The moment is over though. Conversation moves on, and everyone goes about their business as if nothing happened. And as far as everyone is concerned, nothing did happen - only Lena and Kara are privy to the wordless declarations that passed between them.
But it did happen, and it gives Lena hope. More hope than she’s had in a long time. And she knows there are conversations to be had. Her and Kara need to talk about their fight, and how to trust each other again. Lena should probably explain why she was sleeping in Kara’s apartment. Clearly they need to discuss the feelings it seems they both have for each other, with actual words this time. (though perhaps some of those feelings could be expressed in other ways…)
She knows Kara will need to heal from the emotional and physical trauma of being in the phantom zone, and that alone could prove to be a difficult obstacle to overcome. There’s still a long road ahead of them, and most likely not an easy one.
But for now, Kara is home, and that’s enough.

a the virgin suicides supercorp au because it’s my newest obsession!!!
you’re the piece of gold that flashes on my soul
And though I'd been to parties, and kissed lots of girls, and drank my weight in alcoholic beverages to try and forget about Lena, and yet every time I closed my eyes I saw her, in her white dress, impossibly thin, paler than the moon. And every time I tried to follow her I’d wake up, startled. Everyone dated the demise of our neighbourhood from Lena’s cry for help. People saw their clairvoyance in the wiped-out elms, the harsh sunlight, the continuing decline of our auto industry. The tortures tearing Lena pointed to a simple reasoned refusal to accept the world as it was handed down to her, so full of flaws. But the only thing we are certain of after all these years is the insufficiency of explanations. In the end it did not matter how young she was, or that she was a girl. But only that I had loved her and she had loved me, and she had not heard me, still does not hear me calling out to her out of rooms I’d occupied in all my time in her absence.

I find MBTI amusing, and while trying to figure out Lena Luthor's type, I discovered she's categorized as an INTJ. I admit that at first, it didn't seem quite accurate, but as I observed more and more interactions with other characters, especially with Kara Danvers, I had to agree. Sometimes bossy, focused on her goals, often labeled as evil... but with Kara Danvers/Supergirl, it's a 'do anything for her' situation because us INTJs are like that when we find our favorite person; that person becomes our comfort person. I understood Lena's constant need to hug Kara at almost every opportunity they meet because she's her comfort person... and I love that ♥️

Shadow (post-canon fluff)
“So what can we expect from tomorrow’s gala?” the newscaster asked.
Lena smiled, stopping herself from shifting nervously in the bright lights above her, glancing instead to the news studio’s camera as she spoke. “The gala is a black-tie fundraiser event for the Lena Luthor Foundation’s first project - an outreach program aimed at teaching STEM concepts to inner city children.”
“Fascinating,” the newscaster said, “And how will this education program work?”
“The children will be taught basic computer science concepts, and also have access to learn to code robots to compete in an obstacle course competition,” Lena said, eyes shifting back to the newscaster as she spoke, attempting to look as conversational and relaxed as possible. God, it’s been a while since I’ve done this, she thought to herself. “By giving the children real-world instruction, we hope they will be excited to see what one can really do with engineering and science.”
“And will your new girlfriend be attending the gala?”
As much as Lena had no problem staying composed, she could never quite master keeping the blush out of her cheeks. Not when it came to Kara. “She will be attending as well,” Lena confirmed, “Kara is a strong believer in a science education, having grown up with a strong tradition of scientific exploration on Krypton.”
“I imagine she’s an exception to the black tie rules,” the newscaster said.
“Of course,” Lena grinned, “We think the city is ready to know the real Supergirl.”
“Do you think your brother would be proud?”
The smile stuck to Lena’s face - no one but her closest friends would know that anything was amiss from her expression. But the question was certainly charged. While Earth Prime Lex had been known as a philanthropist, his quest for power had come out during the trial - somehow lauded by the public - only for him to attack the world and disappear into the phantom zone, leaving a confused public behind.
I guess I’ll never really escape him, Lena thought tiredly. In Stryker’s or dead or stuck in the phantom zone - none of it mattered. It seemed that Lex would always linger over her. “My brother’s legacy is complex,” Lena said, somewhat frustrated that she couldn’t be more direct on Earth Prime about who her brother really was. “I hope to honor the Luthor name, whatever that would’ve meant to him.” “Well, some very lucky children are about to have a fantastic summer,” the newscaster said back. “Thank you for joining us today, Lena.” “It was a pleasure,” Lena said.
---
Lying in the cool darkness of her bedroom - the setting sun hardly penetrating the windows anymore - Lena dozed quietly, relieved that the day was done.
Light footsteps padded down the hallway, causing a warm feeling in Lena’s chest. Kara’s home, she thought, and she was greeted only moments later by the kryptonian slipping into bed beside her, hugging around her back. “There’s Belly Burger in the kitchen,” Kara murmured, nuzzling softly into Lena’s hair.
“Thank you,” Lena said back, “I needed that.”
“Rough day?”
“Not particularly. Just… him.”
Lena could feel Kara’s head on the pillow behind her, the kryptonian holding her quietly, giving Lena the space to think. “I think it’s more exhausting here,” Lena said eventually, “Lex, on this Earth.”
“Because they think he was a hero?”
“They don’t understand how someone who could work so closely with you,” Lena said, slowly rolling over on the bed to look at Kara directly, “Could turn around and try to kill you. At least on Earth 38, his first response to Superman was to build a kryptonite suit. People knew where things stood. I didn’t have to dance around.”
Kara hugged Lena more tightly. “I’m sorry, Lena,” she said.
Lena sighed, planting a small kiss on Kara’s lips. “I’ll be fine. I just wish I could get away from it sometimes.”
Kara’s brow furrowed thoughtfully, as she reached up to caress Lena’s face. Lena could almost see the thoughts dance behind her eyes, before she smiled softly. “What is it?” Lena asked.
“I…” Kara trailed off for a moment. “I was wondering, if you would like to visit Argo soon? Maybe after the gala? They’ve barely heard of Lex up there.”
Lena’s eyes shifted between Kara’s, small relief flowing through her body. “That sounds perfect.”
---
“Why do you think your brother started hating aliens?”
“Ms. Danv- er, Supergirl- what does Cat Grant think of ethics in journalism?”
“Your brother was a great man - what do you think caused him to snap?”
Lena sighed in relief as the dancing began, happy to have an excuse to lead Kara to the dance floor instead of continuing conversation with the various donors and reporters roaming about. At least the flashing cameras were less intrusive.
Kara, for her part, seemed almost curious at the extra attention. “This’ll take some getting used to,” she murmured playfully, lightly twirling Lena in her arms and setting off another flurry of photo flashes.
“They’ll calm down eventually,” Lena said, “There are only so many Super and a Luthor headlines that people will read.”
“Ready for our trip tomorrow?” Kara asked.
“More than ready.”
---
Alura hugged her warmly when they arrived. “It’s nice to get away,” Lena said, following Alura and Kara from J’onn’s ship to the El home.
She was somewhat disbelieving that she was really sitting in a kryptonian kitchen, on the remnants of an alien planet. With Zor-El off on an overnight deployment to oversee routine maintenance to Argo’s shield, the three of them spent Lena’s first night on Argo sipping on hot chocolate that Kara had brought from Earth.
Lena found Alura was easy to open up to. “It’s just tiring, being in Lex’s shadow,” Lena said. “For once I wish I could be seen on my own terms.”
Lena thought she noticed Alura glance to Kara, but the thought didn’t linger as Alura looked back to Lena again. “Kara and Kal have told me of the feud,” she said sympathetically.
“It’ll be nice getting away from his name for a while,” Lena confessed. “I can just be Lena, instead of Lex’s little sister.”
“We’ll be going to the markets tomorrow,” Kara said, glancing from Lena to Alura. “I want to show Lena the town square.”
“I’m sure she’ll like it,” Alura said, exchanging what Lena was certain was a look with Kara. What’s that about?, she wondered, but Alura quickly moved on. “Is it strange not being a super here?” Alura asked Kara.
Kara smiled. “I’m home again.”
Lena took in Kara’s expression, the ease in her body. They talked about it from time to time - what it meant for Kara to have powers she constantly needed to control. Though she didn’t need to balance two identities anymore, there would always be the physical fatigue of controlling her powers on Earth.
Lena smiled. At least they’d have Argo as a refuge - where Lena wasn’t defined as Lex’s little sister, and Kara wasn’t defined by being a super.
---
Kara seemed oddly nervous that morning as they dressed. Lena was excited - to understand a little more of Kara’s home, to see a new culture - but she couldn’t quite understand her girlfriend’s nerves. “I’m sure I’ll enjoy it,” Lena said curiously. “You don’t need to worry.”
Kara smiled back, reaching out to take Lena’s hand as they exited her parents’ home. The markets took place twice a week, in the large central park that now served as Argo’s main gathering place. But it seemed Kara wasn’t going directly to the center of the large field, instead detouring to the east. “Where are we going?” Lena asked.
“I want to show you Argo’s heroes first.”
Lena tilted her head curiously, following the kryptonian. The expanse around the city was laid out in a series of ringed parks, and they rotated clockwise along the various paths, Kara pointing out different statues that honored the important historical figures of Krypton.
As they passed a playground, heading beyond the fourth ring of trees, Lena found herself looking at another statue ahead, with another bright and cheery view of the city’s skyscrapers in the background.
But what caught Lena’s eye this time as they approached the statue wasn’t the beautiful sights, but instead the familiar face staring back at her - proud and noble, holding glowing purple stone. What is this?, Lena thought.
They approached the statue - a small smile crossing Kara’s lips - and Lena’s eyes darted around it, eventually reading the plaque spelling her own name, with a string of kryptonian beneath. Lena could feel the blush crawling up her cheeks at her own confusion, her heart racing in disbelief. “Me?” Lena said softly. “They think I’m a hero?”
“You gave Argo the harun-el,” Kara said. “Every year, the Luthor Festival celebrates the day my mother returned with the recipe.”
The Luthor festival is about me, Lena thought, placing a hand at the base of the statue, realizing that tears were starting to threaten her vision. But she didn’t care. This… this is about me. What I did.
Kara smiled, squeezing Lena’s other hand, seeming to read her thoughts. “You saved all of them, Lena,” Kara said, as Lena’s heart raced, “To my people, the Luthor name is defined by you.”
Lena smiled widely, tears still threatening to spill as she turned into a waiting Kara’s arms, who squeezed her tightly. Lena’s arms wrapped around Kara in return, as she let out a choked laugh, placing her head on Kara’s shoulder as she melted into her. “Thank you for showing me this,” she murmured. “Thank you.”

Lena’s late.
In her defense, the conference call with Japan had been rescheduled twice and they were ready to pull out of the project if she didn’t speak with them directly.
So, Lena’s late to Al’s for the groups weekly hang out. She ended up coming straight from the office. She is definitely overdressed for the bar, clad in black red bottoms, a tight forrest green pencil skirt, a white silk blouse patterned with black triangles, and a matching green waistcoat. Her hair had been set loose from its tight bun two hours into the four hour conference call, leaving her inky black locks wavy.
Arriving at the bar, Lena thanks Frank as he opens the door for her.
“Thank you, Frank. You can have the rest of the night off, I will probably end up going to Kara’s after.”
“Thank you, Ms. Luthor. I will go home, but I’ll keep my cell on. I’d prefer for you to call me if you need a ride.”
Lena rolls her eyes good-naturedly, used to Franks protests of her finding other transportation.
“Good night, Frank.”
“Good night, Ms. Luthor. Have fun.” Frank tips his hat, waiting for his boss to enter the bar before returning to the drivers side and heading off.
**********
Lena enters the familiar building. It’s outside is rather unremarkable at first glance, which it should be for a business trying to keep a low profile.
Since the CEO has become a regular customer at Al’s, the general population has accepted her presence, or at least ignore it in favor of avoiding Kara’s wrath.
Lena navigates her way to the back, looking for any familiar faces on her way to their regular table. She doesn’t find any, but she does hears Kara’s characteristic voice calling her name.
“Lena! Over here,” she calls, waving her hand obnoxiously in the air. Kara is smiling profusely, perfect white teeth on display and cheeks a rosy hue.
“Stop that! You’re making a scene,” Alex scolds, trying and failing to pull Kara’s hand from the air. Kara ignores her sisters protesting, only ceasing her actions when Lena is near enough to grab.
Just as Lena starts to address the table, Kara pulls her in for a tight hug. One arm surrounds Lena’s back while the other pulls Lena in by the shoulders. The greeting is rather enthusiastic, even for the alien equivalent of a golden retriever.
“Lena! Hi! What took you so long?”
Lena is caught mildly off guard, but returns the hug anyway.
“Hi, darling. I got caught up in the office. Are you having fun?” Lena questions before releasing Kara.
“Yes! Nia got me shots of Aldebaran Rum to ‘loosen me up’, and she made Brainy try Xenorian beer. It tastes like smoked cotton candy!” Kara shares happily, entertwining her hand with Lena’s before the brunette can stray too far.
“Shots? How many have you had?”
“Three! Wait—maybe four. And a couple of those beers. They were really sweet!”
Interesting.
“Hey, Kara, why don’t you go get me a whiskey? Take my card and start a tab for the table.” Lena hands over her Platinum American Express card. She figures giving Kara and errand to run will allow her a few minutes to get to the bottom of what’s going on here.
“Okay! I’ll be right back,” Kara exclaims happily, pressing a kiss to Lena cheek before heading to the bar.

♕ No Matter What - Part 3 | Lena Luthor ♕
Tumblr media
Pairing: Lena Luthor x reader
Warnings: mentions of minor violence, minor injuries and anxiety attacks
Summary: Following the breakfast with Lena, things have changed between the two of you. You’re not exactly friends, but you smile at each other now and engage in small talk every now and then.
Things couldn’t be better. That’s until your past starts haunting you again.
Previous Part | Next Part | Masterlist
________________________________________________
It’s Friday and it’s my first day off since starting. Lena is working from home which means I don’t have to worry about her.
I got up early this morning, went for a run, showered and then cleaned up around the apartment a little. I also went grocery shopping and cooked some lunch before reading on my balcony.
Now I’m weaving through the cars of one of National City’s middle school parking lots, heading to the soccer field behind the school.
“Y/N!”
I beam at the girl whose eyes light up when I approach the field. She drops her water bottle and rushes over to embrace me in a hug.
“What’s up, Ruby?” I squeeze her tightly before letting go. “How’s my favorite godchild doing?”
Ruby giggles and rolls her eyes. “Good, considering I’m the only one you have.“
I scoff playfully and say, “Okay, rude!” which makes her giggle even more.
I haven’t seen her since I started the new job, so I’m excited to spend some time with her. When Sam asked me if I’d be willing to pick her up from practice this morning I immediately agreed. That way Sam can finish the presentation she’s been working on at work and I can spend some time with my favorite child.
“Now go get your stuff so we can get going.” I nudged her in the direction of the field and greeted her her coach with a nod when he recognizes me.
Ruby runs to grab her bags and hug her friends goodbye before returning to my side. I wordlessly take them from her once she’s within reach and sling one of them over my shoulder.
She smiles in gratitude and holds onto my elbow as we make our way through the parking lot, back to my car. I usually bike everywhere because it beats the traffic in the city, but out here in the suburbs things are easier with a car.
“Your mom’s going to be home for dinner, so I thought we could surprise her with some homemade pizza,” I suggest as soon as we get to the car.
Ruby’s eyes light up and she nods vigorously while I throw her bags in the trunk. “And some ice cream for dessert!”
I laugh and get into the driver’s seat, turning on the car as Ruby gets in next to me. “Sure.”
“Yay!”
The drive to Sam’s house is filled with laughter and random chatter. Ruby tells me about her day at school and I share what I’ve been up to before I picked her up.
It’s nice and lighthearted and soon we pull into the driveway of my best friend’s house. Ruby jumps out of the car and grabs her bags from the trunk.
“Y/N?”
“Yeah?” I opening the back door to grab the groceries I bought before picking up Ruby. I got everything we need for the homemade pizza, plus Ruby’s favorite ice cream since I knew she’d want some and I wasn’t sure Sam had any left in their freezer.
“Can you help me with my history project?” she asks and I nod, locking the car.
“Of course, but go take a shower first,” I say as I unlock the front door.
“Thank you!” Ruby takes off her shoes by the coat rack and darts up the stairs.
I smile to myself and close the door after taking off my own shoes. Then I head to the kitchen where I get started on the pizza dough.
The front door opens just as Ruby and I take the finished pizza out of the oven.
“What smells so nice?” Sam asks, appearing in the doorway a second later.
“Mom!”
Ruby rushes past me, the food seemingly forgotten, and greets her mom with a hug.
I smile and place the pizza on the counter. “Just in time. We made pizza.”
Sam kisses the top of Ruby’s head and lets go of her to hug me. “Amazing, I’m starving. Shall we?”
She grabs the plates I already set out on the counter and takes them to the living room where she sets them down on the coffee table.
Ruby follows her with three cans of soda, plopping down on the couch next to her mom.
I cut the pizza and put the slices on a serving plate before joining the two girls.
Sam puts on a movie, unprompted, and we start eating in silence.
It isn’t until all the pizza is gone and the movie is almost over that Ruby turns to Sam with a hopeful smile. “Can I have ice cream now?”
Sam frowns and pauses the movie. “We ran out two nights ago, Rubes.”
Ruby shakes her head and says, “Y/N bought some.”
“Well,” Sam says with a faint smile, “Then I guess it’s Y/N’s call.”
Ruby’s attention turns to me. She gives me her best puppy-dog eyes and I can’t help but give in, not that i was going to object in the first place. “Go ahead.”
I lean forward to grab my drink off the coffee table, but Ruby’s arms around my neck pull me back, effectively knocking the wind out of me. “Thank youuuu!”
I cough and pinch her thigh. “Yeah, yeah. Now get your ice cream before I change my mind.”
Sam smiles at the interaction, waiting for Ruby to be out of earshot to say, “Thank you for today. I know it was your day off, but the presentation was just, a lot, and then the meeting this morning ran over—“ She stops when I raise an eyebrow and takes a deep breath. Her shoulders sag and her bottom lip trembles with suppressed emotion. “I’m sorry. Just— Thank you, Y/N. I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
My gaze softens and I take one of her hands between my own. It’s never been easy for her as a single mother, and now she’s a single mother with a stressful job and a lot of responsibilities and I know that it gets to be just a little too much sometimes. “Don’t apologize, Sammy—“ her bottom lip trembles harder and tears spring to her eyes at the old nickname—“I love you, and I love Ruby. You’re my family, and I’d do anything for you and that little gremlin.”
“Hey!” She scoffs with a watery smile. “Who are you calling a gremlin, you big ogre.”
I laugh softly and squeeze her hand, ignoring her last comment when I lean in to whisper, “No matter what, remember?”
Sam squeezes her eyes shut, willing her tears away as she nods. “No matter what,” she whispers.
I put my arm around her shoulder and pull her into my side. No matter what…We’re there for each other, no matter what. It’s a promise we’ve made to each other ever since we were kids.
When Ruby comes back, Sam resumes the movie without moving from my side. “You okay, mom?”
“I’m fine, sweetheart. Just tired,” Sam says, brushing a strand of hair from her face.
Satisfied with the reply, Ruby settles in next to her and starts eating her ice cream.
I lean back as well, ready to get back into the movie when my phone vibrates in my back pocket. I take it out and freeze when my eyes land on the message on the lock screen.
Darling, I know you don’t want to, but it would mean the world to me and your dad if you came by after your work next Wednesday. We could have dinner and watch Noah’s favorite movies.
I get to my feet without thinking, starling both Sam and Ruby.
Yeah right, he wants to see me. Not a chance…Not after what I’ve done. Not after what happened to Noah because of me.
“Y/N?” Sam takes my shaking hand. “Hey, what’s going on?”
Coward!
“I— I need some air,” I stammer, pulling my hand back and rushing out of the room.
Sam’s and Ruby’s concerned calls follow me into the hallway but I ignored them and slip my shoes.
I’m just about to open the door when Sam catches up to me. “Wait, where are you going? What is happening?”
I turn around to find her looking at me with worried eyes. Ruby’s not there and I’m assuming it’s because Sam told her to stay behind.
I can’t stay. I just can’t. I need to leave. I need to be alone. I want to go back to the living room and finish the movie, but I can’t.
“Please, not now, Sam,” I beg, my voice cracking. “My mom… my parents…”
Sam’s brows furrow. Then understanding dawns on her and here eyes dart to the phone in my hand. “It’s about next Wednesday, isn’t it?” she asks softly and I nod, my eyes stinging with unshed tears. “Okay, go, but call me when you get home.”
I close my eyes and exhale a shaky breath. She knows me better than anyone else and in moments like these I couldn’t be more grateful. She knows I need to be alone whenever I get upset about Noah and she respects my space.
“Thank you, say good night to Ruby for me, yeah?” I whisper, bending down to kiss the top of her head.
She nods and watches me pull out of the driveway with a sad smile.
Next Wednesday is the anniversary of Noah’s death. I’ve been so caught up in work lately that I didn’t realize it’s this close already.
God, you’re awful, Y/N? First you get him killed and now you don’t even remember the anniversary of his death?
I drive through the city, just wanting to be home already and curled up in bed, when my eyes spot a sign across the street. Al’s Dive Bar.
I’ve never been one to get drunk, but right now I could use a beer or two, so I switch lanes and make a right turn.
I find a parking spot fairly close to the bar and lock the car once I’ve jumped out. If I drink now I won’t be able to drive home later, but I’m not that far away from my apartment anyway, so I’ll just walk and get the car in the morning before work.
When I enter the bar a sense of deja vu washes over me. Not because I’ve been here before but because it’s so similar to the one Noah and I used to go to with our squad.
The lights are low and it smells like beer, liquor, and sweat. There’s a pool table and a dart board on the other side of them room and the space is filled with booths and standing tables.
It is super crowded which is no surprise because it’s a Friday night, so I start pushing through the crowd toward an empty seat at the bar.
I get a few dirty looks that I skillfully ignore until I’m at the bar. I’m just about to sit down and order a drink when my eyes find familiar green ones across the room.
What is she doing here? She’s supposed to be at home!
Waving the approaching bartender off with an apologetic grimace I make my way to her.
“Ms. Luthor what are you doing here? You are supposed to be at home!” I snap over the loud music and the chatter. There’s no security with her and in such a public place she’s a target.
Taken aback by my directness, Lena’s eyes widen and she stammers uncharacteristically when she says,“ Y/N, I’m- I’m here with my friends. What’s going on? Why are you here?”
I scoff at that, not acknowledging Kara and her other friends who watch the interaction with curiosity. “It’s my day off, I can do whatever I want. You, however, shouldn’t be here without security!”
Under different circumstances I wouldn’t dare speak to her like this, but right now I’m still upset about my mom’s message and the thought of something happening to her when I could have prevented it stokes the guilt already eating away at me.
This time Lena’s no longer at a loss for words. She squares her shoulders and looks up at me with defiance in her eyes. “I suggest you watch your tone, Y/N. I’m still your boss and you can’t speak to me like that.”
“Ms. Luthor,” I start slowly, not deterred by her sternness, “this is a matter of security. You are my boss, yes, but it is my job to keep you safe and what you are doing here is irresponsible and, quite frankly, stupid.”
If she wasn’t angry before, she definitely is now. Her jaw clenches and her eyes narrow dangerously. Kara and the others watch the scene unfold in horrified silence and take a step back, ready for the impending scolding that is about to take place. “Listen, Y/N—“
She doesn’t get to continue because a passerby who I’ve noticed has been eyeing her since we started talking, suddenly stops and grabs her arm harshly. “You’ve got some nerve showing your face here, bitch. You should be rotting in prison right next to your brother!”
Lena visibly deflates, hurt replacing the anger on her face.
I step forward immediately and take hold of the man’s wrist with a bruising grip, forgetting all about the argument. “How dare you speak to her like that?” I spit through gritted teeth. “Now let go, or so help me God.”
He winces and releases her, pulling his wrists out of my grasp. “Or what? Huh? What are you going to do? Can’t the bitch stand up for herself?” he sneers, his venomous eyes flickering back and forth between me and Lena.
This is exactly what I was afraid of.
Fury bubbles in the pit of my stomach and I take another step forward to shield Lena from the man’s view.
Kara and her friends look alarmed and I notice one of them, his name is James I think, trying to get the attention of the bouncer by the entrance.
“She can stand up for herself just fine, but she shouldn’t have to,” I defend, glowering at him. “She has nothing to do with her brother’s actions, so I suggest you keep walking.”
The man barks out a mirthless laugh. “Or what?” he asks again and I take a deep breath to stay calm.
It’s in that moment that I feel a hand on the small of my back. Lena. Whether the gesture is supposed to comfort me or get me to back off, I don’t know, but it does send shivers up my spine.
I glare at the man and say, “Just leave,” before turning away, but then he says something that has me seeing red.
“Coward.”
I spin around in the blink of an eye and shove him hard. “What did you just say to me?!”
He stumbles backward, but regains his footing before falling. The people around us move back so as to not get caught up in the fight.
“Say it again!” I roar. “Go on! Say it!”
The man doesn’t say anything, but he bares his teeth and charges at me. That’s when I remember Lena’s still behind me, her hand now clutching the back of my jacket, so instead of ducking out of the way of his fist, I stay right where I am to make sure he doesn’t accidentally hit her.
The blow lands with a sickening sound and my head snaps back from the force of it. Almost immediately I feel something warm running from my nose and when I wipe at it with the back of my hand I see that it’s blood.
I go to return the punch, my heartbeat loud in my ears, but the grip Lena still has on my jacket stops me. I want to pry her off and tackle the man, but its too late because the bouncer is already taking him down with the help of James.
My hands are trembling and my breaths are shaky and shallow.
I’m not a coward!
A touch on my shoulder makes me flinch and when I whirl around I find Lena looking at me with distress and worry all over her face.
“Are you alright, Y/N?” Kara asks softly, appearing next to Lena while the man who caused all of this gets escorted out by the bouncer.
My eyes dart around the room, hating how everyone’s attention is on me. It does nothing to calm my racing heart, as a matter of fact, it’s making it worse.
I feel my throat closing and my lungs burning and before long I do what I always do in situations like this.
I run.

I haven’t proofread this yet, but I wanted to get it out as soon as possible, so if there’s any mistakes I apologize. I’ll get to it as soon as I can.
Also forgot to mention that everyone’s human in this story, so no Supergirl or aliens.

Control
Kara has no idea how things got out of control so quickly.
One minute, they were sitting in their booth at Al’s, downing their second round of drinks while chatting animatedly about that time when Alex accidentally ordered pizzas loaded with anchovies, and the next, tables were getting pushed over, chairs were flying and the entire bar was engulfed in chaos.
As with most bar fights, it’s completely unclear what or who started it. Kara briefly considers simply using her superspeed to subdue everyone enough to put an end to it, but then she remembers she’s blown out her powers earlier that day.
A bottle comes flying toward her and she ducks just in time. And then, someone grabs her shoulder and spins her around, but before Kara can even get a good look at who grabbed her, Lena is there, blocking a fist that was meant for Kara’s nose, and then throwing one clean punch to knock out Kara’s would-be attacker.
Shocked, all Kara can do in the moment is nod, but Lena is already taking a step toward a large burly dude who has Alex pinned to the bar. Lena yells to get his attention and then punches him out as well, though it takes more than one swing for him to go down.
Eventually, things die down. Kara assumes that whoever started the fight is either out cold or has left the bar amid the mayhem.
“You alright?” Alex asks, concern for her sister evident in her face.
“I’m fine. Not a scratch. Thanks to Lena.”
They both turn towards where Lena is currently checking on Brainy, who seems a little shell shocked by what he has just witnessed.
“Yeah, what’s up with that? I had no idea she even knew how to throw a punch.”
Kara wants to nod, but then a series of images flash through her mind: Lena punching Beth Breen unconscious while Kara was being attacked by the nanobots, Lena knocking out Eve Tessmacher in Kaznia, Lena aiming right for Lex’s chin, twice.
“I’m going to go take her home,” Kara declares, knowing that all she wants to do right now is gather Lena up in her arms and hug her.
Alex nods. “Alright. You do that. I’ll call J’onn to help me sort out this mess.”
It takes a little while before Kara can convince Lena to leave, to let Alex take care of the aftermath of the fight, but eventually, they make it back to Kara’s apartment. As soon as they get inside, Kara makes a beeline for the freezer compartment of her fridge and pulls out a bag of frozen peas.
“Here. For your knuckles.”
Kara holds out the bag to Lena who raises an eyebrow. “Peas?”
“I, um, I don’t usually need ice packs myself, so, this is all I have.”
Lena smirks. “Oh I get that. I’m just surprised you have…frozen vegetables in your apartment.”
“I do eat green things sometimes, you know?” Kara retorts, rolling her eyes.
She takes a few steps and sits down on her couch next to Lena. Gently, Kara takes both of Lena’s hands and inspects them. Her knuckles are red and a little swollen, and there is a small cut that’s already scabbed over. Kara shakes her head and looks up.
“You didn’t have to do that, you know?”
“Yes, I did,” Lena cuts her off. “I’m not going to let anyone hurt my friends, hurt you.”
Kara presses a careful kiss to Lena’s injured hands and then rests the bag of peas on them.
“You, Lena Luthor, are my hero.”
“And you, Kara Danvers, are a sap.”
“Maybe. But I’m the sap who loves you.”
At that, Lena ducks forward a little and captures Kara’s lips in a soft kiss.
“I love you, too.

1. Leaves
Lena was, in all honesty, having the time of her life. Since they’d arrived here, she had finally relaxed. Really relaxed. Lex was gone. Capital-G Gone. The last of Cadmus had been mopped up. The Conpany was no longer a problem- L-Corp was being sold off, from entire divisions down to sales of old office chairs. The Estate and nine-tenths of the family holdings were all being sold off, and the money quietly funneled into a holding company. Sam Arias would manage Lena’s wealth.
Lena had nothing to do anymore, and it was glorious. She’d done what she’d never done in her entire life: rest. She ate when was hungry, slept when she was tired. She stayed up late finishing a thriller novel she’d grabbed off one of Kara’s tables and slept it off the following day. She could do whatever she wanted, whenever she wanted, so one day she said, “Let’s go watch the leaves change.”
“Not much of that in National City,” Kara had said, not looking up from her laptop.
Lena was flipping channels when she made the suggestion, another pedestrian activity that had been too far beneath her to ever indulge during her CEO days.
“I’m serious,” said Lena. “I’ll rent us a cabin, book a flight, and we’ll be there by tomorrow morning. Vermont, or maybe New Hampshire.”
Kara looked up. “I could just fly us.”
“Short distances only,” said Lena.
Kara weighed it for a moment. She looked at Lena for a drawn out instant, eyes darting this way and that. Lena knew she had a deadline; she had become privy to the details of Kara’s life ever since she started couch surfing at Kara’s place after dumping her chic penthouse on some petroleum heir from the Emirates.
She had been “crashing” at Kara’s place for three months and had her own key, but they weren’t talking about it. Lena had remained on the couch, falling asleep to YouTube videos of molten lava and cat purring sounds, while Kara puttered around the house.
There were moments of tension. Pauses during shared meals. Moments when they pressed closed on sofa, times when Kara got up to go to bed and Lena felt this yearning to follow that she never quite obeyed.
Kara was thinking. Hard.
“Rent a cabin?”
“Yeah, someplace remote. So you can take a break. You’ve been working harder than ever, Darling. It almost feels like you’re avoiding me.”
Kara swallowed. “Okay,” she said. “We’ll fly. The regular way.”
They did, arriving in Maine less than a day later. Lena rented a Land Rover (because they were on an Adventure) and did all the driving, three hours from the airport to the cabin.
Kara rode in silence, though Lena heard her gasp.
The trees were beautiful. They were alive with color, as if an impressionist master had made the world a canvas and run riot. It was more than a mass of reds and yellows and oranges. It was astonishing.
It was dark when they arrived at the cabin. Lena had chosen one with two bedrooms, though she hesitated when she did. It had a full kitchen with a gas stove and all the amenities but also a fire pit and picnic table and gazebo, and overlooked a private swath of a small lake. It was like something out of a Bob Ross painting.
They were both tired from the flight, or at least Lena was, and turned in right away. When she rose the next day, she cheerily told her cabin-mate she was headed into town to get some supplies.
Kara went out to chop wood. Lena, of course, watched a few swings before leaving. Kara didn’t really need an axe but Lena didn’t care; she was preoccupied watching the muscles of Kara’s shoulders and back as she swung the splitting maul.
Lena got back before noon and carried the groceries inside, enough for her to use the fancy kitchen to prepare a mighty feast for her companion.
She didn’t hear the sobs until she had most of it put away. Lena bolted to the back door and stopped.
Kara was sitting on the picnic table, feet resting on the long board that acted as a seat. She was holding a single golden leaf on her hand, studying it and sobbing softly to herself.
“Kara?”
She looked up, soft blue eyes wet with tears. Lena felt a wave of grief but also panic, rushing to the table.
“Kara, what’s wrong?”
“I,” Kara started. “Lena, I’m scared.”
Lena swallowed hard. “Why?”
Kara looked at the leaf. “Another year past. The leaves turn colors and fall, school starts, things change.”
“I don’t understand.”
“Alex is married now. They’ve got a kid to raise. Nia and Brainy will probably get married soon. We hadn’t had a game night in two months.”
Lena swallowed. Kara was right. When Lena had first joined, then rejoined, this wonderful found family had been aggressively social, and now they forgot to text as often as not. They all spent more time at home or at their real jobs than at the Tower. The world had just started moving on. Kara didn’t even wear the cape every day anymore.
“I know,” said Lena, her voice thick. “But you’ve got me.”
Lena felt her pulse start to race. Kara had been so distant, she couldn’t help wonder if she was enough. If boring, retired Lena wasn’t enough. Oh God, what if Kara was thinking about going to Argo? Or the future?
“Not forever,” said Kara, her voice cracking like glass. She let the leaf drop from her fingers. “Eventually you’ll go. All of you. Brainy, Nia, Alex, Clark if he doesn’t come back from Argo. You.”
“Oh,” Lena said, softly. “Oh, Kara.”
“I think I might be immortal,” Kara whispered. “I don’t feel any aches or pains. Nothing about me changes. I don’t forget things like people do. My body just keeps repairing itself and it never makes any mistakes. What if I’m just like this forever? Or even a thousand years? What if everyone is gone and their kids are gone and no one knows who I am anymore?!” she was frantic now, the words coming too fast.
Lena reached out, tentatively. She put her hands on Kara’s shoulders and pulled herself in, wrapping her best friend in a hug.
Birds chirped, the waters of the lake made soft glug-glugs, and all around them was the soft tapping sound of the leaves, already letting go.
“I won’t leave you,” Lena whispered. “Kara, I won’t. If I have to live forever I will. I’ll find a way. Tech, magic, fifth dimensional imps. I’ll find a way.”
Kara sighed, arms firmly around her.
“Do you need space?” Lena asked. “I could leave you alone for a bit. Look for a place when we get back, so I’m not on the couch all the time.”
“I don’t want you to leave,” Kara blurted, almost cutting her off. “I know I’ve been distant, it’s just… I keep looking at you and thinking about all the time I’ve lost and all the mistakes I’ve made and how I’ll regret it forever. We have so little time and I’m so scared I’ll lose you.”
Lena pulled back to look at her. “We have a long time to make more memories. As many as we can.”
“I’ll lose you too,” said Kara. “I know you want more. A family, a partner. You’ll start to have less time for me. You’ll all just fall away and I’ll be stuck here alone.”
“That’s not going to happen.”
“How can you say that?”
Kara started to pull away. Lena stopped her with a tug on her arms. It stunned her, sometimes, how she could overpower a god with her tiny human hands. How she could stun the other whirlwind or a touch.
“Kara,” said Lena. “I don’t want someone else. I want you.”
“Me?” Kara squeaked.
Lena cleared her throat. “I wanted to tell you at the wedding. I mean, I didn’t dress like that and go stag for the hell of it. I just lost my nerve and you seemed so overwhelmed.”
Kara blinked a few times.
“You want me?” said Kara.
Lena felt a cold rush of terror. She’d just blurted it out, artlessly, unplanned.
“Like want me want me? Like kissing want me?”
Lena licked her lips. “Yes. I’d like to kiss you right now, if you let me.”
Kara settled back into the table, leaning forward. Lena leaned in, pushing her back slightly, moving her hands from shoulders to hips, scoring the way Kara tensed and trembled. She was hardly inexperienced, Lena knew, but something about this felt like a first kiss, even for her. It tasted like one, too, down to the quivery way their lips met.
Kissing quickly became something more. Lena didn’t know if she was pulling or Kara pushing. It didn’t much matter; the path led to the bed in Kara’s room, marked by a trail of shed clothing.
Years of anticipation overwhelmed them both; dinner was forgotten, and they didn’t even emerge until the next day.
It was in the morning sun, the light turning Kara’s skin gold, that Lena saw it. Twisted within one of the curling locks of hair, splayed around Kara’s head on the pillow, was a faintly visible thread of purest silver, chased through the gold like an engraver’s masterpiece. Lena couldn’t help but twirl the errant strands around her finger.
As Kara slept, she looked up through the window and watched the wind as it caressed the leaves.

top 5 supergirl episodes?
full disclosure i haven't seen the entirety of supergirl (ive literally only seen like 7 eps & its all season 1) so this list will probably change over time (bc im starting to painstakingly watch the show - imagine slowburn but watching a series) however ive watched like a ridiculous amount of supercorp edits so im going to base my choices on the parts where supercorp exist ha!
5. Season 1 - Red Faced
Tumblr media
this would probably be the only none supercorp related yet still somehow my personal fave for a few reasons. i love this scene in particular bc it shows that cat grant cares for kara and what cat says here is very relatable. no matter how harsh cat can be at times, cat was a girl's girl here. she gave an advice which was helpful to both supergirl and kara. she had every right to rip kara viciously apart but instead she took a completely different route. i like the line she says here.
"You really need to figure out what's really bothering you." "You really need to find that anger behind the anger. And you really need to figure out what's really making you mad."
i think this was also the ep where kara acknowledged where some of the anger was coming from. even with zero dialogue and with mel's incredible acting skills she was able to convey so much emotions during that scene where she releases all her anger towards the red tornato. From losing her parents, losing her planet —her home, for losing everything and maybe even angry with her parents for the choices they made for her. it was such an incredible and very emotional scene.
im putting the rest in read more bc of how unnecessarily long this post has become
4. Season 2 - "The Adventures of Supergirl"
Tumblr media
this should be easy. this was the first time kara met lena and changed the trajectory of every queer person watching this show and lena first delivered the first of many many questionably fruity (gay) lines fjlkajdla
"You couldn't have fooled me."
Tumblr media
also bc of this scene thank you very much
3. Season 2 - "Luthors"
Tumblr media
if there is one particular scene that convinced me to even give supergirl the time of day its obvs this one and lena "suspiciously straight" luthor delivered one of the most iconic lines on television in my opinion and now forever engraved in my mind. let's not forget lcorp CEO lena luthor took the time of day to fill catco employee kara danver's office with flowers like it's a regular tuesday but oh well
"now you'll have someone to stand up for you. always" "supergirl might have saved me but kara danvers, you are my hero."
screaming, crying, throwing up
2. Season 2 - "Exodus"
Tumblr media
tada! i mean, look at it! how heroic! i also find it funny how grateful and confused lena was that kara danvers was having coffee with supergirl late at night but still
Season 2 - Ace Reporter
so this isnt at all groundbreaking bc honestly, 5 isn't enough and anything that has supercorp will be my favorite even though again i havent seen the rest of supergirl yet but we're ignoring canon so we're ignoring that fact too. i think this was the ep where kara was comforting lean about jack's death. i personally have a love and hate relationship towards this scene for many reasons but im a sucker for supercorp and there was a clip where kara hesitated and looked like she was about to plant a kiss on lena's head but then hugged her instead and i think its beautiful and im a sucker for kara leaning in towards lena
Tumblr media
BONUS:
im too lazy to figure out where these clips are from which episode but this. i love every scene and its more like these below are my reasons for watching supergirl and has nothing to do with being my top 5 bwahaha
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
oh did i mention i also happen to have a weird obsession with superrojas i will not rest until i reach the ep where andrea rojas exist

Kara never thought of it when Lena first asked her this question.
"What if someone says; in like a few years maybe, I'd be...gone?" Lena asks, staring at the distance.
Kara got confused at this question. But decided to answer anyway. "Well, I'd most likely, punch them or something. I'm not letting that happen."
Lena chuckled. "You're right...I guess it's just another existential crisis."
"Want to talk about it?" Kara asks softly. Lena just smiles at her. "No, darling. It's alright. It's just one of those times."
"Well, if you need anything...food, movies, a hug, I'm right here."
Lena laughs and nods. "Got that."
She didn't ask that question for no reason. She isn't sure if Kara already figured this fact out already, but their time is limited. Because Kara won't die unless she gets killed with Kryptonite or the day the yellow sun flying over them dies.
Lena knows there's a chance that Kara's life could be at stake at any given moment, but at the same time...there's a possibility that she could have Kara for the rest of her life. While Kara won't have Lena, nor the rest of their family for the rest of her life.
See here's the thing, Kara knew that. But ignorance is a bliss, as they say. She pretends that the day won't come.
But...maybe she indulged herself too much.
Because right now, Kara, swear to Rao, drops the car she's currently carrying as her eyes widen in fear. Through a window, not that big, but big enough for her to witness it firsthand.
Lena, sweet, gentle, beautiful Lena, with a knife pierced through her neck. She heard the enemy responsible for it, the one who's back is facing the window, laugh. Fucking laugh. Kara and Lena make eye contact through the window, Lena smiling gently, softly, warmly, at her. Muttering something no human could hear, but Kara heard so clearly. Her voice as soft as her gaze.
"I love you."
Kara barges in, breaking the whole wall, she rushes to her, hoping she could still save her. Hoping she wouldn't lose her. She can't lose Lena, she just can't.
However, it was too late. The knife stabbed a very fatal spot, and Kara witnesses Lena drop to the ground.
Kara can no longer hear her heartbeat.
"Aww, look at Supergirl. The Paragon of Hope, looking hopeless-"
Before this asshole can finish, Kara pushes him, actually pushes him off the broken wall, she hears him scream and plummet down, but she doesn't care.
"Lena?"
Nothing.
"Please, no. No. Fuck. Please don't leave me, don't take her too, please." Kara tries to get help, but to no avail.
Lena Luthor's death was publicly announced two days later. Many were happy at the fact that there was not a single Luthor left. The Superfriends grieved in their own ways. At least some people in the city actually acknowledged what Lena did for the world and paid their respects. The Superfriends tried to comfort Kara. She appreciates it, of course, but it won't bring Lena, Kara's...everything, back to her.
Now everywhere she goes, Kara just sees Lena.
She would try to go to Big Belly Burger, she just remembers that time they celebrated Lena's birthday there. Noonan's? She just sees Lena's smile when Kara gives her coffee from that place. The park in National City? That time Lena used her magic fully for the first time. CatCo? She remembers every hall Lena ever walked in. She sees a book? She remembers Lena giving her one.
Her own apartment also reminds her of Lena, all the times they had there. Certain foods remind her of Lena. Everything around her is now just a ghost of Lena. Even fucking kryptonite reminds her of Lena.
She's everywhere Kara goes.
No one in the city realized how much Supergirl was so torn over the loss of Lena Luthor.
Some dickwads actually thought she was happy about it, which some idiot reporter asked her one day.
"You must be really relieved that the last Luthor is no longer a threat."
Kara stays silent, yet her eyes emmit everything she wants to say.
Kelly holds back an angry Alex from hitting someone, but Kelly herself is yelling about how insensitive that was, about how this reporter is disrespecting the dead, about how they forgot that Lena worked with Supergirl. Both Brainy and Nia list down everything that Lena has done to save the city.
Kara? She's been silent, before taking a deep breath, looking at the reporter, knowing there are cameras surrounding her, she says,
"This world is nothing without her."
Then, she flies away, higher into the blue skies and screams.
Would you look at that, world. There's a Luthor that successfully broke a Super.

A/N: Hey little beans!! missed me? Ok so a lot fo stuff has happened and I know I always promise I'm back, but all things considered I just gotta tell you, I'm just here, lost in space, I'll never be gone so at least theres that, so as long as you're here, I'm here, let's just enjoy our time together. Pls enjoy this little something!
Lena Luthor x  Fem!R//Word Count: 2, 546
-------------------------------------------------------
"Give our children your dark-bright eyes or your enchanted smile. So that even when we are gone, the world will find within them all the reasons I loved you." -Nizar Qabbani
Kelly put glass of water on the coffee table in front of you and sat next to you on the couch. She put an arm around you, rubbing your back and shoulders, trying to provide any kind of comfort she could.
It had been late at night when you had come knocking at her door. From the moment Kelly had opened it she knew something had happened. Your eyes were swollen?, red and you could barely say a word. You were holding a small bag of luggage beside you with a trembling hand. She practically pulled you inside by pure instinct without asking any of the questions that were swirling in her mind to put you in a safe space. It was her number one priority and she wasn't going to leave your side until she was sure you were alright.
When you were calm enough to speak, Kelly found herself shocked by what had made you come to her in the middle of the night. You and Lena had broken up.
Kelly had known you since she had arrived to National City to help her brother. It had been years ago but she still remembered you and Lena together and how happy you had seemed back then. You were probably one of the most estable relationships she had seen among her friends and it surprised her to find out how things had developed between you two to want to end it so abruptly.
Of all your friends, she was probably the only one who could grasp what you were going through and she promised you she was going to help you sort things out.
"Alex is out in a mission, she'll be back home in a couple of days so you can stay without problem. The spare room is ready." She said as she kept rubbing your back and shoulders. She could only imagine how tired yo would be after what had happened.
"I can't stay." Your voice came out hoarse and in a whisper.
"C'mon, you know I won't let you go like this. It's late, we can get to the problem solving tomorrow."
"No, I…I." You swallowed, gathering yourself as best as you could. "I can't stay in National City."
That took Kelly by surprise. "Let's not rush things, alright?"
"No, Kelly, I can't." You turned to look at her so she could see the determination in your eyes.
"(Y/N), I know this may seem difficult but you need to talk to Lena first. I think- ."
"I'm pregnant." You blurted, leaving Kelly with an open mouth.
There was a moment of hesitation in which Kelly didn't know what to do first. If jump in excitement about the new member of the Superfriends family or hug you because this seemed to trouble you more than she would have expected. Kelly opted for the second option and you let her embrace you, she pulled you into her arms as you let another handful of tears roll down your cheeks.
You would remember that first night after leaving Lena as one one of the most painful ones of your life. Your last conversation with Lena, the way you had left her apartment with a single suitcase in your hand, reaching for someone that could help you, and leaving National City behind to start a new life. Everything had seemed too dark and painful but you had something to pull you forward, someone that was going to change everything.
And so, years later you would find yourself stroking a little head full of black hair with your hand while you held his little body with the other against your chest. Little (Y/S/N), your son, was a little more than four years old. He was the light of your life and you loved him with all your might.
Since you had left National City, it had always been the two of you. From the nine months you carried him in your womb until that moment in your life, you had been inseparable. You had been afraid at first, for him and for yourself. Strangers in a new town, trying to make your own home, with no idea of how family was supposed to work. Things were not perfect, but he didn't need them to be and neither did you. You had made it and you had made something beautiful.
It was also true that you had your own regrets. There were moments when you thought a little too much about the past. About how things could have ended up if you had taken better, or less reckless, decisions. You feared the what ifs, the maybes, and the past that had been left that night at Kelly's door. And one particular ghost still haunted your mind and your heart.
Every time you looked at your son, you looked at her. Black hair, green eyes, and a young mind as sharp as a knife. Now I know whose genetics are stronger, you had thought to yourself with a smile so many times. Of course, if you looked at him you could also recognize yourself. (Y/S/N) was the little perfect combination of the best of you.
"She will have your nose, I'm sure." Lena had told you once, delighted at the thought of having a little you running around the house.
She had been sitting on the floor behind you, with her head placed above your shoulder as you both read the required papers to start the medical process that would make you both mothers. You had leaned back, humming in thought. Your fingers moved through pages and pages of information, trying to grasp as much as you could, amidst the distraction that supposed Lena's breath so close to your neck.
"What if she is a he?" You had questioned with a little smile.
"Then we'll have to think of more names." She had placed a kiss close to your ear and then had helped you read the rest.
It had been years since you had last seen her but there she was, with you, with him, even if you couldn't name her. You had said as much about her as you had been able to to your son when he was old enough to question you about it. Why he didn't a father? Or another mother? Two parents like most kids like him? Because his Mama wasn't ready to come to them yet, you had said, but that one day she was going to, and it pained you to realize how much you wanted for that wishful thing to happen too. And it was not long before it became true.
"(Y/N)?"
The phone had almost slipped from your hand after hearing her voice after so much time.
(Y/S/N) had turned his head away from the TV on the living room to watch you, trying to imagine who was talking on the other side of the line to make his mom make that funny face.
"Lena?" You had answered with a shaking voice.
"It's been a while."
The conversation started as it usually did, with people who used to know everything about each other and ended up becoming complete strangers. An exchange of words, questions and answers that seemed to lead to nothing but the abyss that now separated you from your past selves.
"I'm sorry." You heard her say on the other side with a hesitant tone so rare in her it surprised you even more. "I know I should've called you a long time ago."
"Yeah, you should have." You tried to keep your wounded heart from spilling as you looked at your son.
"Would it be too late if I ask , can we see each other again?"
You sat in the corner of the coffee shop with a warm cup between your fingers, sipping your beverage as you waited. You were nervous. You kept bouncing your leg and looking at the door until you saw her come through it.
It reminded you the very first time you had sat together, in that little coffee shop across the street from the office. You had been dreading the moment she would have to cross the door to meet with you, that if she even thought you were worth her time, after you had asked her to have a coffee with you. You could still remember the little smile playing across her lips when she accepted the invitation and the way your stomach had fluttered when she grabbed your arm, promising to met you after work. Time had passed and there had been no sign of her yet. You feared or a moment she had forgotten, and if that was the case you would not hold it against her. She was a busy woman, what was a coffee date compared to the empire she had to keep from crumbling. Still, you waited and, against all hope and all odds she had come.
Time seemed to freeze when your eyes found each other. She was all goddess looking even after the years you had spent away.
When you finally settled at the table, words seemed to be lost for both of you. Small talk was painfully dull. Another reminder of all that had been lost between you two.
"Lena?" You held your gaze towards her and finally asked her. A question too obvious, maybe, but necessary nevertheless. "Why are we here?"
She smiled, sheepishly and not without a hint of regret in her emerald eyes. "'Cause I was wrong".
The moment you had crossed her door to never come back again was the moment Lena knew what true and complete loneliness meant. An unyielding emptiness filled by shadows and rumors of what life she had with you and she had no one else to blame but herself. She had put her company above you, trying to make it the force of good the world needed and wanted, that she forgot you also needed her and wanted her and loved her.
And when Lena had realized her mistakes, when she had tried to reach you, to bring you back, you were so long gone and lost from her sight that it made her want to destroy everything she had worked so hard to build if that meant she would have you again.
"I'm sorry." Lena's eyes were full of regret.
"Don't be." You shook your head. "You were out there saving the world, trying to change your family legacy and I…I didn't want to hold you back."
"I don't think I would have done most of what I did if it wasn't for you." Her lips curled in a little smile. "We did many great things together."
"Yes, we did." The image of your son flashed through your mind and you swallowed hard. "One in particular, I think you need to know."
You stood in the sidewalk among the rest of parents that waited patiently for the school bell ring. You had not dared to answer Lena's questions about where you were going and why you were there after your encounter but you knew she had surely figured it out by now as you watched her fidget with her hands. Instinctively you reached for them, a gesture that had been so common between you, in an attempt to soothe her and yourself. You held hands as you kept waiting.
"How is he?" Lena asked, her thumb caressing the back of your hand in a nervous tick.
"He's very smart, first of his class." Lena raised her brows in surprise. "He likes big animals, wants a bike for Christmas, and wants to be an astronaut before becoming an Olympic athlete, in all sports." You sighed with a smile.
"Wonderful." A wave of warmth rushed through her, feeling herself proud of the little boy she was about to meet, and a moment of silence passed before she dared to ask. "Why did you never tell me about him?"
"I didn't know how." You took a deep breath. "Back then, you were so focused on being a CEO, on working for the good of the people. I saw how much it took from you but I also understood how big that responsibility was. It's true, what I said before. I didn't want to hold you back. I didn't want us to be a distraction, not particularly after our last fight."
"I'm sorry I ever made you feel that way." Lena turned to look at you with pleading eyes. "I never wanted you to face this alone and I'm here to amends…If you let me."
You couldn't say more as the bell finally rang. You could feel your heart pounding hard against your chest and you squeezed Lena's hand.
"Ready to meet him?" You managed to said.
"I am." Lena nodded.
You headed inside the building with the rest of the parents, ready to pick your son. You reached her classroom in no time, greeting his teacher and asking if your son had behaved during class. His teacher was all smiles when she told you your son had been in nothing but his best behavior. Then she called your son and you watched from the door as he stepped out of his little chair, rushing towards you. You picked him up, holding him in your arms, and thanked the teacher before turning around to leave.
You asked him about his day and the things he had learned that day. He replied with nothing but excitement and you were happy to hear him.
"Hey, I bring a friend today with me." You said after he had finished. "Would you like to meet her?"
"Yeah." He replied with a smile.
You walked through the hallway and there, sitting in a bench, was Lena waiting patiently for you. She rose from her seat once she saw you approach and her face couldn't hide her awe. As if she was seeing a true miracle, she didn't know what to do or what to say, until you were close enough.
"Hi." She said wearing that beautiful smile of hers.
"Hi." Your son responded with his little voice.
"My name is Lena, nice o meet you."
"You're pretty." He said, making you and Lena chuckle.
"What do we say when we meet new people?" You reminded your son.
"I'm (Y/S/N). Nice to meet you, Lena."
"Good boy." You said kissing his temple.
Lena took a look at him, seeing herself in that little face and there was no denying he was hers and yours. A pang of regret struck her heart for all the years she had not known about him. If she had only called after you, if she had called you, if she had tried to contact you sooner rather than later, how different things would have been for you three. But she was there, with you and your son, and that was all that mattered to her.
This time, she promised herself, she was going to do whatever that was in her hands to make it up to you and she wasn't going to waste another moment.

Leaning In
Everything felt strange.
It felt strange to see sunlight again. To walk into her apartment. To hug Alex again, hug Lena, hug the rest of the superfriends. To hear cars roll by and planes overhead and people everywhere.
Compared to the phantom zone, everything was strange.
Wires were crossed, Kara thought, looking over at Lena with an overwhelming sense of guilt at what she had almost done, days before. Lena sat quietly on Kara's couch with a glass of wine, eyeing Kara from across the coffee table where Brainy and Alex were finishing out their game of Monopoly.
It had only been four days since her return, and Alex hadn’t given her a moment of solitude, so overjoyed to finally have her sister back. And Kara was glad for the noise, for the life that was back in her life with all the superfriends, chatter and colors and hugs instead of the desolate wasteland of the phantom zone.
But in that time, Kara and Lena hadn’t had a moment alone together, leaving a sinking pit in Kara’s stomach when she thought about when she’d next have a real conversation with the Luthor. Does she realize?, Kara thought, Does she know I almost tried to kiss her?
The phantom zone breaks people. It’s why Krypton used it as a prison, why it became such an effective deterrent. Her brain wasn’t normal when she returned. She normally knew better. Knew better than to try to kiss her best friend. But in her traumatized and mostly isolated state, Kara had briefly forgotten the sort of decorum required with normal living - that her months of wishing she were home in Lena’s arms didn’t mean that her daydreams had become real.
Brainy finally won the game of Monopoly - proud that he had been able to knock Lena out of the game early, virtually guaranteeing his victory - and the superfriends finally began packing up to go home. Alex pulled Kara into a tight hug, planning on giving the kryptonian some space for the night, the first where Kara would sleep in her own bed instead of the Tower. “Coffee tomorrow morning?” Alex asked adamantly, Kara quickly agreeing.
One by one, the superfriends made their way out the door - until only Lena remained, still sitting on the couch, though she had set down the glass of wine. Kara turned awkwardly from her place by her kitchen island, watching the Luthor still watching her.
Slowly, Lena rose from her seat, making her way over to Kara. “Can we talk?” she asked.
Kara nodded, glancing nervously to the side. She knows. “I’m sorry,” Kara murmured. “When I came back, I- I wasn’t thinking.”
Lena’s brow furrowed in confusion. “You don’t need to be sorry, Kara.”
Kara tilted her head back up at Lena. “Are we- are we talking about the same thing?”
“Aren’t we?” Lena said quietly.
Kara swallowed. Just lay the cards on the table, she thought to herself. “I’m talking about - I tried to kiss you. Before I remembered you wouldn’t want it. I mean, even if you did-” Kara cut herself off, glancing to the floor. Rao, I should’ve thought through this more instead of babbling…
But to her surprise, she heard Lena step towards her, until the brunette was close enough to clasp onto Kara’s hand. Kara glanced up again, taking in Lena’s demure expression. “Even if I did?” Lena asked.
Kara’s eyes flitted between Lena’s, noting how her heart was beating faster, how there was a light blush crossing her face. Oh, Kara thought, feeling a small burn on her own cheeks as she realized what was happening. “Even if you did,” Kara said shyly, “I wouldn’t want our first kiss to be in front of everyone else.”
Lena smiled softly, giving Kara’s hand a gentle squeeze. “We’re alone now,” she said.
Kara smiled back. “We are,” she said warmly, pausing for one more moment to take in Lena’s face. Lena tilted her head, and Kara leaned towards her.
And this time, she didn’t stop.
