“Open your eyes and look at what you did.”
Lena was tired. Fixing the world was heavy work, especially when it involved cracking the secrets of the ultimate weapon of a dead empire. Myriad was tucked away safely in her lab behind shielding and laser grids and the most advanced security systems in the world, but was most of all protected by Kara’s reputation. Supergirl couldn’t just smash her way into a building and steal something, especially not now, with so much public scrutiny against her.
Lena was expecting a night at home. Not to relax -she hasn’t relaxed until her brother’s wormy lips, turning blue in death, spilled those four little words and cracked her heart in half, broke it into so many pieces that all the king’s horses and all the king’s men and not even Supergirl could put it together again. What was left of her capacity for that kind of love was gone now. Lex had started the process of ripping it out.
Lena has finished it, casting the bloody shreds on the icy floor of a mausoleum in the arctic, not turning back even once to see.
She knew the DEO was watching her every move, waiting for her to make a mistake that she could seize on. She knew they were itching to take her out. Kara would probably lead the charge herself. She’d crow about how she didn’t want to do this and didn’t want to hurt Lena and then she’d perp walk her like a villain of the week.
It wasn’t remorse that swirled in her stomach. It wasn’t regret that iced her veins. It wasn’t sorrow that made her eyes burn, and it wasn’t doubt that made the clicks of her heels echo in her empty lifeless penthouse.
She did not feel any of those things. Soon, no one ever would again. A world without lies, without strife, without pain. Those twisting, burning emotions would be gone. For everyone.
For her.
Lena froze when she heard the soft click of a hammer being thumbed back on a pistol.
“Turn around.”
Lena tensed. Alex. She should have expected this- Alex didn’t care about the rules when it came to her sister.
Slowly, Lena turned. Alex was right behind her, gun in one hand, phone in the other. She started to play a video on the screen. Lena recognized it at once as the Fortress of Solitude.
“Why?” Alex choked out. “Why did it have to be you?”
Lena pressed her eyes shut, scrambling for something to say. There was a real chance that this confrontation ended with her in a pool of blood on the floor.
“Open your eyes, you bitch! Open your eyes and look at what you did!”
Lena opened them and was confronted with what she had refused to see before, what she had turned from before portalling out. Like a biblical prophet she knew that if she but turned back for a last look she’d have been undone.
Alex recorded Kara locked in the cage as she approached, calling her sister’s name. Kara didn’t respond. She simply lay curled on the floor, faint green scratches scored in her exposed skin. As Alex drew nearer, Lena could hear Kara making a peculiar sound- a rhythmic, trilling thrum, a deep basso rumble as if she were… purring.
And sobbing.
Lena tried to look away but Alex’s expression tightened. Lena forced herself to stare into the screen- the picture blurred as Alex must have been fumbling with the Kryptonian controls. Finally, the crystal cage retracted.
“Kara,” Alex was saying. “Kara, oh my god, where’s Lena? Is she alright?”
Lena flinched. Alex’s jaw tightened as their eye briefly met.
Kara’s face was a mask of pain and grief, clouded with an agony deeper than any physical hurt.
“It was Lena.”
“What?”
“It was Lena. She took Myriad from the armory and she… she was so mad, Alex. It was like she h-hated me. She was lying the whole time after I told her who I was, she already knew and she was so mad. Alex I think she hates me now.”
Kara began to sob and make that damned purring sound at the same time.
“Don’t hurt her,” Kara whimpered, “don’t hurt her, Alex. She’s good, I promise she’s good she just needs our help.”
Alex turned off the video and pressed the muzzle of her gun to Lena’s forehead.
Lena closed her eyes.
“I have every reason to,” Alex began.
“Do it,” Lena hissed. “It’s what we both want, just fucking do it. She’ll get over it.”
“No,” Alex choked out, her voice drowning in emotion. “No she won’t, ever. She has an eidetic memory. If I blow your fucking head off like I should, her last memory of you will be that, what you did to her in her most sacred place, forever.”
“Good,” Lena snapped, opening her eyes. “Good. Then she’ll know how I feel.”
“Yeah? How’s that?”
“Like she tore my heart out. I believed in her. I gave myself to her in a way I never have for anyone else. I let her in after I swore on my mother’s grave I’d never let anyone else hurt me like… like someone else did. She hammered her way into my life with her kindness and her concern and her comfort and it was all a FUCKING LIE, Alex!”
Lena sucked in a hitching breath and went on, forcing herself to go on as she blinked to force the tears from her eyes.
“It was all a lie. I’m just a Luthor to her, to you, to all of you. I sat in that apartment on game nights and movie nights and you all knew. You all knew, and you mocked me. So many cryptic comments and weird little jokes and now I know why. I let myself believe it. I let myself believe she wanted me. She kept trying to tell me something over and over and she kept backing away from it and…”
Lena froze.
The gun fell away, and Alex just stared at her.
“Oh my God. Oh my fucking God,” Alex gasped.
“No,” Lena protested, “no it’s not that!”
“You’re in love with her, aren’t you? Holy fuck, how did I not see this before? You bought a billion dollar publishing company on a whim for her. The flowers, the way you looked at me before she told you I’m her sister. Jesus. Jesus Christ, Lena. You God damn drama queen.”
“I’m a drama queen? You pointed a gun at my head!”
Alex racked the slide back, and turned the weapon so Lena could see the follower of the empty magazine had locked it open. It was unloaded.
“What the fuck is wrong with you?” Lena screeched.
“I came here to tell you to give me Myriad back and stay the hell away from my sister,” said Alex.
“You pointed a real gun at my head! I don’t care if it was unloaded, the first rule of gun safety is…”
“You thought it was something else,” said Alex.
“God damn it,” Lena began, but Alex cut her off.
“You thought she was working up to tell you something else. You thought she was going to confess her love, didn’t you?”
Lena went completely still.
She had know it, of course. She had known it the way that she knew the sun would rise in the east and set in the west, the way way she knew the stars would shine and the tide would beat against the shore. She had known it in the hollows of her bones, in places she forgot she could feel.
She had not known she knew it.
Lex’s words buffeted her from memory and she felt a knew shattering, even deeper this time.
“I fucked up,” someone said, only it was Lena, her own voice echoing from somewhere far distant. She was only dimly aware of the painful jolt in her tailbone as she slid down the cabinet behind her and her ass landed on the hardwood floor.
“When Lex told me, he proved it. He proved it. I didn’t want to see it but he proved it to me. I’m not what she wants. She’ll never want me like I want her.”
Alex looked down at her and Lena watched her expression shift, dancing through a dozen different emotions.
“It hurts, doesn’t it?”
“Yeah.”
“You have anything to drink here? Something good, I don’t want to pussy around with box wine. This is a whiskey occasion.”
Perplexed, Lena simply said, “Side cupboard, there’s a bottle of single malt and some tumblers.”
Alex didn’t bother with the glasses. She took out the bottle and uncapped it, whistling softly before she took a long pull straight from the bottle.
“Smooth,” she said, not even wincing. “Shit, this bottle probably costs a month of my rent.”
“It was my dad’s favorite,” Lena muttered. “My first drink was that scotch. He gave me a little sip when I was twelve. Lillian screeched at him for it.”
“She would, she’s a thundering bitch,” said Alex.
Alex sat down and passed Lena the bottle. She took a drink and passed it back, and they sat there in silence for a while, passing drinks back and forth.
“See I’m not a shrink or anything,” said Alex, “but if I had to analyze this situation I think what I see is you hurting Kara hoping that she’ll hurt you back and validate your feelings so you can stop feeling sad about her.”
“Fuck you,” Lena muttered.
“Not my type. Besides, bro code. My sister has dibs.”
Lena almost spat out a mouthful of scotch. “What the hell are you talking about?”
“You know when she’s doing the zoom zoom thing, she has a comms piece in her ear. I listen in on what she’s doing,” Alex began to imitate Kara in a grating falsetto. “Lena you have to jump!”
“What?”
“Remember that time she was going to let the entire city’s water supply be poisoned to save you?”
Lena took another pull before passing the bottle back.
“Yeah,” said Lena, not caring that her Irish accent was slipping out.
“Or that time she flew you to the DEO after Edge poisoned you?”
“She saves people all the time,” Lena protested.
“Yeah, but she doesn’t bridal carry them to safety and moon over them like a lovesick teenager and do the whole brushing their hair back thing. She says something corny and flies off. Unless it’s you. The whole world goes on pause when it’s you.”
“It can’t be.”
Alex took a way too long drink and looked at her.
“Did it never occur to you that she might have two secrets? That the one might compel her to keep the other?”
Lena rubbed at her eyes. The whisky was weighing heavily on her, and before she knew it, she was sobbing.
To her utter shock, Alex rubbed her back.
“Here’s what we do. You and me go get Myriad,”
“I’m too drunk to drive.”
“Then call your chauffeur, you spoiled rich brat,” Alex snapped, “and we go get Myriad and we go back to the DEO. You apologize and you and Kara talk this out, and you remember that if you ever physically harm my sister again I actually will shoot you.”
“Also,” said Lena. “You and I. You and I will go get Myriad, not you and me.”
Lena yanked the bottle back and finished it.
“Okay. Okay fine, let’s-“
There was a double thud as boot heels hit the balcony, a sound Lena had long grown used to. She and Alex both watched as Kara slid the balcony door open and swept into the penthouse, cape flaring majestically behind her.
God she was so pretty, and so handsome. She was like a brave knight in some fairytale, head bowed and jaw set like she was marching to a battle she wasn’t sure she could win.
Lena’s chest ached.
“We need to talk,” Kara intoned. “I’m not going to hurt you anymore, but I can’t let you do something you’ll regret forever. I…”
She trailed off as she saw a very drunk Alex sitting next to a very drunk Lena Luthor, the pair sitting against Lena’s kitchen cabinets and dishwasher, respectively, having clearly finished off the empty bottle of scotch that sat between them.
“What the hell?” said Kara.
“Did she just cuss?” said Alex.
“She did,” said Lena.
“What is this? What are you two doing? Alex, is that your gun?”
“Yeah,” said Alex. “I’m gonna get an Uber so you two can talk this out.”
“What?” Kara said, utterly baffled.
As she stood, Lena drew her legs up and hugged her knees. She looked away at first, then looked up and made herself meet Kara’s eyes.
“I’m sorry,” she whispered. “I’m sorry I hurt you. I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” she whimpered.
With a tenderness that belied her strength, Kara gently raised Lena to her feet. She’d kicked off her heels and Kara loomed over her, soft hands that could crush steel resting gently on her arms. Lena couldn’t bear the weight of her concern. Seeing the worry in Kara’s eyes, the unconditional compassion, hurt her as much as staring into the sun.
“I’m the one who should be sorry,” said Kara. “I’m the one who should apologize. You were right, Lena. I forced myself into your life and pushed past all your barriers but I never lowered mine. I tried to live in your heart but made you live like a guest in mine. You deserve better.”
“I don’t want better,” Lena whispered. “I want you.”
Kara went very still.
“You want me?”
“I’m so sorry I hurt you, Kara.”
Kara took a half step forward and pulled Lena into an embrace, guiding her into a hug. As those arms like stone walls curled around her and the cape sheltered her against Kara’s unnatural, fever-hot warmth, Lena choked back a hitching sob. It almost felt like it would be okay.
“It’s alright,” Kara whispered. “It’ll be okay. We can come back from this.”
“How? I hurt you, Kara.”
“I forgive you.”
“You can’t just-“
“Shhh,” Kara nuzzled against the crown of Lena’s head. “I’m Supergirl. I can do anything.”

Supercorptober Day 21: "Lavender"
Read on A03 instead
Lena stands in the hallway playing nervously with the key in her hands. A key she’s surprised she still has. She's stood in front of this exact door a hundred (a thousand?) times, used the key to let herself in at least a few dozen times, probably more - yet here she was, unable to force herself to turn the knob. She’s not really sure how long she stands there, but at some point, she finally takes a deep breath to steady herself, squares her shoulders, and lets herself into Kara’s apartment.
It hurts more than she expected it to, being back here. The last time she was in this apartment Lena had come to tell Kara she was wrong about Non Nocere, to ask for forgiveness - and then ended up with Alex’s gun pointed at her head. It’s not exactly a fond memory. Before that, it had been nearly half a year, back when Lena still came over for movie nights and cuddles on the couch. Before Lena found out about Kara’s secret identity in the worst possible way and everything went to shit.
And now Kara is gone. The apartment is quiet and achingly empty without the joyful sound of her laughter to fill it up. It’s been three days since Lena’s deranged half-brother sent Kara to the phantom zone - fucking Lex - and the super friends still have no idea how to rescue her. Lena’s not sure Kara would even want her here, with their friendship still on rocky terms, but she just needed something , some kind of connection, some reminder to keep her from giving up hope.
The apartment hasn’t changed all that much from what Lena remembers, at least as far as she can tell. She walks slowly around the space, taking in all the details she’s seen so many times before, but that suddenly carry so much more weight now because the details are so uniquely Kara. The fluffy blankets on the couch. A blue coffee mug on the kitchen counter with a red supergirl logo and yellow writing that says “Have a SUPER day!” (a gift from Nia), and another mug next to it covered in a pattern of brightly colored donuts. The easel in the corner with some of Kara’s paintings propped against the legs and her box of painting supplies next to it. The assortment of different sized picture frames scattered throughout the spacious loft on various tables and shelves, filled with smiling photos of Kara’s family and friends. Lena stops short when she realizes the picture of her and Kara together is gone from the shelf where it used to sit. It shouldn’t surprise her, after all the hurt she caused, but it still stings - more than it should, considering Lena smashed her own framed picture of them with a whiskey glass. She squeezes her eyes shut and forces herself to swallow the lump forming in her throat.
For whatever reason, Lena decides to wander past the partition into the space Kara uses as her bedroom, running her hand over the familiar blue and green patterned comforter on Kara’s bed. When she glances at the bedside table, she feels her heart stop. Kara didn’t get rid of the picture of her and Lena - it’s right there, on the table next to her bed. Right where she would see it every morning and every night. But why? Why would she want to look at that after everything?
It’s all of a sudden too much for Lena, and she sinks down heavily on the edge of the bed. She can’t stop the hiccuping sob that claws its way out of her chest or the tears gathering in the corners of her eyes, so she grabs one of Kara’s pillows and squeezes it to her body as tight as she can. As she does, her nose tingles with the lingering scent of lavender and vanilla. Kara. Years of being best friends (years of being in love with her best friend), Lena knows that scent, one she used to breathe in and try to memorize every time she and Kara shared a hug or snuggled up on the couch together.
She’d give anything to hug Kara again.
The sharp pang of her anguish cuts into her like a knife twisting in her stomach, and suddenly she feels like she is drowning under a tidal wave of emotions. She clutches desperately at Kara’s pillow and rocks herself back and forth, while she cries deep gasping sobs that feel like they are being ripped from her lungs. Her eyes burn from the hot tears that are now streaming relentlessly down her face, dripping onto the pillow and sliding down her neck to soak the collar of her shirt. Once again, she feels like her heart is being cracked open, but this, this is infinitely more painful. This isn’t just some fight between friends, this is her possibly losing Kara forever. She doesn’t think she can live with that possibility.
“I’m so sorry Kara.” Lena chokes out between labored breaths. “I’m so so sorry. This is all my fault. I promise I’ll find a way to bring you home. I promise.” Her voice cracks on the last words, her throat so raw she can barely speak above a whisper.
Lena cries until exhaustion wins out, until her body hurts as much as her heart, and she has no more tears left to cry. When her breathing finally returns to normal, she decides it’s time to pull herself together and go back to her own apartment. She can’t stay here any longer, it’s just too painful of a reminder of Kara’s absence, and Lena needs to be focused if she’s going to help the team find their missing friend. She breathes in one more deep breath of the lavender and vanilla scented pillow, trying to commit the smell to memory before she leaves.
She’s about to walk out the door when she stops herself. She turns around and walks back to the couch, where she picks up one of the fluffy blankets Kara always keeps there. One they used to share, with popcorn, and chinese takeout, and hot chocolate, and stories about their respective days. One that still smells like Kara. She takes it with her so she can have just one little piece of Kara to hold onto, a reminder of what she used to have, of who she is still fighting for.
———
When Lena gets back to her penthouse, she carefully removes the picture of her and Kara from the broken frame and puts it in a new one. She falls asleep with Kara’s blanket wrapped around her and the picture clutched to her chest.
———
Lena returns to Kara’s loft a week later when the blanket finally loses its scent. Kara is still gone, and the apartment is still too quiet and lifeless. Lena’s heart still feels like it’s been hacked open by a dull axe.
She lets herself curl up on the couch for a moment, finding the other blanket she had left here last time and pulling it tightly around her, breathing in the familiar smell. She imagines Kara cozying up on the couch next to her, socked feet tucked under her legs, her head resting on Lena’s shoulder, blonde hair tickling her neck. She thinks about all the times she wished their cuddling would turn into something more, how she wished she could have had the courage to tell Kara how she felt.
“Kara…” she pleads to the void. “Please come back Kara. I’m so sorry. For everything. I miss you so much.”
“Please… I love you.”
The blanket is wet with tears when the whispered confession floats away into the silence of the empty apartment.
———
Lena ends up staying at Kara’s apartment. She told herself it would be too painful, but it turns out her crippling misery was determined to follow her no matter where she went. So she surrenders, and just lets herself be surrounded by everything Kara. It hurts, but there are also happy memories here, ones Lena wants to hold close to her heart for as long as possible.
———
Another week and a half drags by, and then by some miracle, the super friends are finally able to rescue Kara from the phantom zone (with help from Lena’s yellow sun grenades, which she is very proud of, as she should be). When Kara stumbles onto the ship and collapses into her sister’s arms, everyone can tell that she is physically and emotionally drained. There’s no time for pleasantries or conversation - Kara needs to be taken as quickly as possible to the med bay for a full exam and to get her onto a yellow sun bed so her body can begin to heal.
It’s two full days later when Kara is finally recovered enough for the super friends to throw her a welcome back party at the Tower. Meanwhile, Lena’s anxiety is at an all-time high. Her and Kara’s friendship was in a shaky place when everything went down with Lex, and Lena doesn’t know if Kara blames her for what happened. She doesn’t know what Kara may have experienced in the phantom zone and how that might affect her. Trauma does strange things to people, Lena knows that from firsthand experience. Is Kara even the same person anymore? Will Kara still want Lena in her life?
The first positive sign is that when Kara enters the common room to the sight of donuts, flowers, balloons, and her friends and family gathered around, her face immediately breaks out into a genuine Kara Danvers smile, all full of white teeth, dimples on display and eyes crinkling at the corners. She still seems a bit tired and perhaps a little more reserved than usual, but otherwise very much still herself, and everyone breathes a collective sigh of relief.
Kara works her way around the room exchanging hugs, each team member expressing their joy at having her back, and Kara expressing her own joy and gratitude in return. Lena is the last one left, and she feels her heart flutter and her throat go dry when Kara’s eyes meet hers. The superhero nods her head towards Lena with a fond smile and her arms open wide, and it takes all of Lena’s willpower to force herself to walk when all she wants to do is run at full speed into Kara’s warm embrace. When their bodies finally meet and they melt into each other, everything feels right again. Like all the empty spaces in Lena’s heart are being filled back up and every ache and pain in her soul is being soothed by Kara’s presence. She’s home. She’s home. She’s finally home.
“It’s only because you’re on the team that I’m here,” Kara murmurs in Lena’s ear. She squeezes her so tightly it almost hurts, but Lena just squeezes back as tightly as her own strength will allow her. She feels the tears sliding down her cheeks and takes a deep breath through her sniffles, trying her best to hold herself together. When Kara finally pulls back, she pauses for a moment, her hands drifting to Lena’s shoulders. She cocks her head to the side and looks at Lena with a soft smile on her face and a gentle question in her eyes. “Your scent… vanilla and lavender…?”
Lena knows exactly what she is asking, because Lena usually smells like her expensive perfume, or her coconut and hibiscus scented shampoo. And there are a thousand ways Lena wants to answer that question, a thousand things she wants to tell Kara that she can’t put into words just yet. So she tries to pour all her emotions into a single sentence, and hopes Kara understands. She bites her lip to stop it from quivering and gives a tiny shrug, before she answers in a small shaky voice. “I really missed you.” She ducks her head down and tries to swallow, her throat constricted with emotion. She gathers what courage she can to open herself up, to lift her head and make another confession, whispered so softly only Kara can hear her. “The only thing that kept me going was the hope that I would get to see you again.”
Kara is silent for a minute as she stares into Lena’s glassy green eyes, her own tear-brimmed blue eyes searching Lena’s face for some hidden truth. Lena wills her to find it, to see all the love Lena holds in her heart for her. She wills Kara to hear the way that same heart is currently hammering against her ribs, even while it feels like it's stuck in her throat.
When it seems like Kara has found what she is looking for, she whispers back, her own voice cracking just a little. “I really missed you too.”
There’s a weight to the way Kara says it, the words feeling charged with hidden significance. Lena's thoughts go to the picture of them she found on Kara’s nightstand, and wonders - could she…?  Now it’s her turn to search Kara’s face for answers, and as she does, she finds herself looking into a longing gaze, blue eyes filled with overwhelming affection, and sparking with a sudden fire she’s never seen before. Kara moves her right hand from Lena’s shoulder to softly cup the side of her face, her thumb gently wiping away a tear from her cheek. Lena lets her eyes flutter closed for a second as she leans into the warm touch. There’s a moment between them, a low buzzing electric current connecting their bodies, air thick with anticipation, a silent conversation with their eyes. Kara's eyes flit to Lena's lips, nodding her head almost imperceptibly, and then she leans her body closer to Lena’s, drawing them both towards the inevitable.
The collision course they are on is abruptly derailed by Alex, completely oblivious to the moment of intimacy she just interrupted. “Apologies from Kelly, she really wishes she could be here, but she had a full day of orientation at Social Services.”
Lena reluctantly steps back to allow the sisters to talk, but she can’t help noticing the way Kara's shoulders droop ever so slightly, and the look of disappointment on her face. A sentiment Lena definitely shares.
(What she doesn’t see is the way Alex glances between her and Kara, and the fleeting moment of realization in the older Danvers’ eyes, followed immediately by a quick flash of guilt, as she puts two and two together).
The moment is over though. Conversation moves on, and everyone goes about their business as if nothing happened. And as far as everyone is concerned, nothing did happen - only Lena and Kara are privy to the wordless declarations that passed between them.
But it did happen, and it gives Lena hope. More hope than she’s had in a long time. And she knows there are conversations to be had. Her and Kara need to talk about their fight, and how to trust each other again. Lena should probably explain why she was sleeping in Kara’s apartment. Clearly they need to discuss the feelings it seems they both have for each other, with actual words this time. (though perhaps some of those feelings could be expressed in other ways…)
She knows Kara will need to heal from the emotional and physical trauma of being in the phantom zone, and that alone could prove to be a difficult obstacle to overcome. There’s still a long road ahead of them, and most likely not an easy one.
But for now, Kara is home, and that’s enough.

a the virgin suicides supercorp au because it’s my newest obsession!!!
you’re the piece of gold that flashes on my soul
And though I'd been to parties, and kissed lots of girls, and drank my weight in alcoholic beverages to try and forget about Lena, and yet every time I closed my eyes I saw her, in her white dress, impossibly thin, paler than the moon. And every time I tried to follow her I’d wake up, startled. Everyone dated the demise of our neighbourhood from Lena’s cry for help. People saw their clairvoyance in the wiped-out elms, the harsh sunlight, the continuing decline of our auto industry. The tortures tearing Lena pointed to a simple reasoned refusal to accept the world as it was handed down to her, so full of flaws. But the only thing we are certain of after all these years is the insufficiency of explanations. In the end it did not matter how young she was, or that she was a girl. But only that I had loved her and she had loved me, and she had not heard me, still does not hear me calling out to her out of rooms I’d occupied in all my time in her absence.

I find MBTI amusing, and while trying to figure out Lena Luthor's type, I discovered she's categorized as an INTJ. I admit that at first, it didn't seem quite accurate, but as I observed more and more interactions with other characters, especially with Kara Danvers, I had to agree. Sometimes bossy, focused on her goals, often labeled as evil... but with Kara Danvers/Supergirl, it's a 'do anything for her' situation because us INTJs are like that when we find our favorite person; that person becomes our comfort person. I understood Lena's constant need to hug Kara at almost every opportunity they meet because she's her comfort person... and I love that ♥️

Shadow (post-canon fluff)
“So what can we expect from tomorrow’s gala?” the newscaster asked.
Lena smiled, stopping herself from shifting nervously in the bright lights above her, glancing instead to the news studio’s camera as she spoke. “The gala is a black-tie fundraiser event for the Lena Luthor Foundation’s first project - an outreach program aimed at teaching STEM concepts to inner city children.”
“Fascinating,” the newscaster said, “And how will this education program work?”
“The children will be taught basic computer science concepts, and also have access to learn to code robots to compete in an obstacle course competition,” Lena said, eyes shifting back to the newscaster as she spoke, attempting to look as conversational and relaxed as possible. God, it’s been a while since I’ve done this, she thought to herself. “By giving the children real-world instruction, we hope they will be excited to see what one can really do with engineering and science.”
“And will your new girlfriend be attending the gala?”
As much as Lena had no problem staying composed, she could never quite master keeping the blush out of her cheeks. Not when it came to Kara. “She will be attending as well,” Lena confirmed, “Kara is a strong believer in a science education, having grown up with a strong tradition of scientific exploration on Krypton.”
“I imagine she’s an exception to the black tie rules,” the newscaster said.
“Of course,” Lena grinned, “We think the city is ready to know the real Supergirl.”
“Do you think your brother would be proud?”
The smile stuck to Lena’s face - no one but her closest friends would know that anything was amiss from her expression. But the question was certainly charged. While Earth Prime Lex had been known as a philanthropist, his quest for power had come out during the trial - somehow lauded by the public - only for him to attack the world and disappear into the phantom zone, leaving a confused public behind.
I guess I’ll never really escape him, Lena thought tiredly. In Stryker’s or dead or stuck in the phantom zone - none of it mattered. It seemed that Lex would always linger over her. “My brother’s legacy is complex,” Lena said, somewhat frustrated that she couldn’t be more direct on Earth Prime about who her brother really was. “I hope to honor the Luthor name, whatever that would’ve meant to him.” “Well, some very lucky children are about to have a fantastic summer,” the newscaster said back. “Thank you for joining us today, Lena.” “It was a pleasure,” Lena said.
---
Lying in the cool darkness of her bedroom - the setting sun hardly penetrating the windows anymore - Lena dozed quietly, relieved that the day was done.
Light footsteps padded down the hallway, causing a warm feeling in Lena’s chest. Kara’s home, she thought, and she was greeted only moments later by the kryptonian slipping into bed beside her, hugging around her back. “There’s Belly Burger in the kitchen,” Kara murmured, nuzzling softly into Lena’s hair.
“Thank you,” Lena said back, “I needed that.”
“Rough day?”
“Not particularly. Just… him.”
Lena could feel Kara’s head on the pillow behind her, the kryptonian holding her quietly, giving Lena the space to think. “I think it’s more exhausting here,” Lena said eventually, “Lex, on this Earth.”
“Because they think he was a hero?”
“They don’t understand how someone who could work so closely with you,” Lena said, slowly rolling over on the bed to look at Kara directly, “Could turn around and try to kill you. At least on Earth 38, his first response to Superman was to build a kryptonite suit. People knew where things stood. I didn’t have to dance around.”
Kara hugged Lena more tightly. “I’m sorry, Lena,” she said.
Lena sighed, planting a small kiss on Kara’s lips. “I’ll be fine. I just wish I could get away from it sometimes.”
Kara’s brow furrowed thoughtfully, as she reached up to caress Lena’s face. Lena could almost see the thoughts dance behind her eyes, before she smiled softly. “What is it?” Lena asked.
“I…” Kara trailed off for a moment. “I was wondering, if you would like to visit Argo soon? Maybe after the gala? They’ve barely heard of Lex up there.”
Lena’s eyes shifted between Kara’s, small relief flowing through her body. “That sounds perfect.”
---
“Why do you think your brother started hating aliens?”
“Ms. Danv- er, Supergirl- what does Cat Grant think of ethics in journalism?”
“Your brother was a great man - what do you think caused him to snap?”
Lena sighed in relief as the dancing began, happy to have an excuse to lead Kara to the dance floor instead of continuing conversation with the various donors and reporters roaming about. At least the flashing cameras were less intrusive.
Kara, for her part, seemed almost curious at the extra attention. “This’ll take some getting used to,” she murmured playfully, lightly twirling Lena in her arms and setting off another flurry of photo flashes.
“They’ll calm down eventually,” Lena said, “There are only so many Super and a Luthor headlines that people will read.”
“Ready for our trip tomorrow?” Kara asked.
“More than ready.”
---
Alura hugged her warmly when they arrived. “It’s nice to get away,” Lena said, following Alura and Kara from J’onn’s ship to the El home.
She was somewhat disbelieving that she was really sitting in a kryptonian kitchen, on the remnants of an alien planet. With Zor-El off on an overnight deployment to oversee routine maintenance to Argo’s shield, the three of them spent Lena’s first night on Argo sipping on hot chocolate that Kara had brought from Earth.
Lena found Alura was easy to open up to. “It’s just tiring, being in Lex’s shadow,” Lena said. “For once I wish I could be seen on my own terms.”
Lena thought she noticed Alura glance to Kara, but the thought didn’t linger as Alura looked back to Lena again. “Kara and Kal have told me of the feud,” she said sympathetically.
“It’ll be nice getting away from his name for a while,” Lena confessed. “I can just be Lena, instead of Lex’s little sister.”
“We’ll be going to the markets tomorrow,” Kara said, glancing from Lena to Alura. “I want to show Lena the town square.”
“I’m sure she’ll like it,” Alura said, exchanging what Lena was certain was a look with Kara. What’s that about?, she wondered, but Alura quickly moved on. “Is it strange not being a super here?” Alura asked Kara.
Kara smiled. “I’m home again.”
Lena took in Kara’s expression, the ease in her body. They talked about it from time to time - what it meant for Kara to have powers she constantly needed to control. Though she didn’t need to balance two identities anymore, there would always be the physical fatigue of controlling her powers on Earth.
Lena smiled. At least they’d have Argo as a refuge - where Lena wasn’t defined as Lex’s little sister, and Kara wasn’t defined by being a super.
---
Kara seemed oddly nervous that morning as they dressed. Lena was excited - to understand a little more of Kara’s home, to see a new culture - but she couldn’t quite understand her girlfriend’s nerves. “I’m sure I’ll enjoy it,” Lena said curiously. “You don’t need to worry.”
Kara smiled back, reaching out to take Lena’s hand as they exited her parents’ home. The markets took place twice a week, in the large central park that now served as Argo’s main gathering place. But it seemed Kara wasn’t going directly to the center of the large field, instead detouring to the east. “Where are we going?” Lena asked.
“I want to show you Argo’s heroes first.”
Lena tilted her head curiously, following the kryptonian. The expanse around the city was laid out in a series of ringed parks, and they rotated clockwise along the various paths, Kara pointing out different statues that honored the important historical figures of Krypton.
As they passed a playground, heading beyond the fourth ring of trees, Lena found herself looking at another statue ahead, with another bright and cheery view of the city’s skyscrapers in the background.
But what caught Lena’s eye this time as they approached the statue wasn’t the beautiful sights, but instead the familiar face staring back at her - proud and noble, holding glowing purple stone. What is this?, Lena thought.
They approached the statue - a small smile crossing Kara’s lips - and Lena’s eyes darted around it, eventually reading the plaque spelling her own name, with a string of kryptonian beneath. Lena could feel the blush crawling up her cheeks at her own confusion, her heart racing in disbelief. “Me?” Lena said softly. “They think I’m a hero?”
“You gave Argo the harun-el,” Kara said. “Every year, the Luthor Festival celebrates the day my mother returned with the recipe.”
The Luthor festival is about me, Lena thought, placing a hand at the base of the statue, realizing that tears were starting to threaten her vision. But she didn’t care. This… this is about me. What I did.
Kara smiled, squeezing Lena’s other hand, seeming to read her thoughts. “You saved all of them, Lena,” Kara said, as Lena’s heart raced, “To my people, the Luthor name is defined by you.”
Lena smiled widely, tears still threatening to spill as she turned into a waiting Kara’s arms, who squeezed her tightly. Lena’s arms wrapped around Kara in return, as she let out a choked laugh, placing her head on Kara’s shoulder as she melted into her. “Thank you for showing me this,” she murmured. “Thank you.”

The ocean at our feet
Male Reader X Lena Luthor
Request - Can you do a MR! X lena Luthor fluff. R is Kara’s brother who came to earth with her when Krypton exploded, he also followed Kara to CatCo but became a Photographer instead of Assistant and when he met Lena became head over heels with her. Lena and R have a Lois and Clark style relationship until one day he saves her and reveals his identity to her
Tumblr media
“I can't believe Cat left,” You said.
“I can't believe it, either. But you will like working there, just trust me. Lena will be a great boss” Kara said.
You knew that Kara was friends with Lena but you never met her. You and Kara used to live in Krypton, then went to Earth when Krypton exploded. You do wear glasses just like Kara and she is happy that you will work with her at Catco. You used to live with your sister but you moved out and she won't admit it but she does miss living with you.
You arrive at the company and she takes you to Lena’s office. Lena saw you and Kara walk into the office then she stood up, and walked toward you and Kara. She is smiling at you and you forgot how to say hi, you stare into her green eyes. Your body is feeling hot your heart is beating faster and faster. Lena said hi and she waiting for you to say hi back and tell her your name. You can't stop staring at her and you still don't say anything to her, then Kara taps your arm with her elbow.
“She asked your name,” Kara said.
“Oh-… My name is Y/N, I’m her brother” You said.
“Nice to meet you, Y/N. I know she is your sister because of her last name. Can I see your portfolio?” Lena said.
“Portfolio?” You asked.
“The big book, Y/N” Kara laughed.
“Oh!” You said.
You hand over your portfolio and Lena starts to look at the pictures carefully. You are feeling nervous that she is looking at your pictures and she doesn't say a word just yet. Lena doesn't look up just yet, but she can feel your eyes on her. Then she looks up and she looks at the camera around your neck. She thinks you are cute and she stares into your eyes for a few seconds.
“Y/n, you are very talented. I like how you capture the light and the moment in each picture. You got the job, as the new photographer” Lena smiled.
“Wow, thanks Ms Luthor,” You said.
You like how she says your name.
“Just call me Lena,” Lena said.
You nod then Kara gives you a hug and you can't stop smiling.
“Kara, I want you to work on an article with William Dey. It's about the new library opening in a neighborhood and they are giving away food for the families. And Y/N, you will come with me” Lena said.
“I will get on it” Kara smiled.
Kara left and you are feeling nervous again.
“Why me?” You asked.
“It's for work obviously, Y/N. Get your camera ready and let's go” Lena said.
You and Lena leave together and you sit next to her in the car. You smell her perfume and you like the scent. You never felt nervous around women before.
“We are going to a hospital for sick children. I need you to take pictures of them and everyone else and the hospital. We will need donations and posting pictures online will benefit the hospital” Lena said.
“I can do that. It's nice that you are helping them” You said.
“People deserve healthcare no matter what their financial status is,” Lena said.
“I understand,” You said.
You and Lena arrive at the hospital and you get the camera ready. You start to take pictures of the press conference and the guests. Lena gets on stage and you start to take pictures of her. Later, Lena starts to spend time with the sick kids and you start to take pictures of her with them. You start to like her even more because of how she likes to help people in need.
“Y/N, show me the pictures,” Lena said.
“Sure,” You said.
You start to show her the pictures and you watch her.
“Wow, Y/N each picture came out great and you didn't even edit the pictures yet,” Lena said.
“You are beautiful,” You said.
“Thank you, but you shouldn't say that to your boss,” Lena said.
“I’m sorry. I just blur out…”
“Y/N, calm down I’m not firing you,” Lena said.
“Sorry,” You said shyly.
“It’s alright. Get back to work” Lena said
“Yeah,” You said.
You continue to work and Lena starts to talk to the press again. Much later, you and Lena went back to the office. You start to edit the pictures then you stare at the screen and you stare at Lena’s eyes.
———
Lena would sometimes stare at you when you were not looking. She thinks you are cute but she doesn't want to cross the line between boss and employee. On the TV, everyone sees there is an explosion at a building and the fire is out of control. You and Kara stare at each other and then nod, you two sneak away and head to the elevator.
“Where are you two going?” Lena asked.
“Oh, umm we are going to cover the story,” You said quickly
You and your sister rushed to the elevator and you closed the door. You and Kara ran towards the alley and quickly changed. You and Kars fly toward the building on fire. Clark arrived and you two are happy to see him.
“Still no cape, Y/N?” Clark asked.
“Still trying to find my own style,” You said.
“I keep telling him, capes are cool but he is just being stubborn” Kara teased.
You start to work together with them saving people and putting out the fire. You saved a firefighter’s life, she almost fell inside the building when the ceiling fell and blocked the exit. Everyone started to cheer for you, Kara, and Clark.
Much later, you returned to the office and Lena asked questions about where you went. You lied about asking people about the fire and she did believe you. Now, she wants the article before morning then you texted Kara and told her what happened. She did help you, she wrote the article then you went back to take pictures of the building.

You are working late and you just finished. Before going home, you see Lena in her office and you go into her office.
“Is everything okay?” You asked.
“I thought you went home,” Lena said.
“I thought the same for you. But i was editing some pictures. You seem sad, do you want to talk about it?” You said.
“I don't want to bother you and I’m sure your girlfriend is waiting for you at home,” Lena said.
“I don't have a girlfriend. But you can talk to me, I’m a good listener. Is it about your brother Lex?” You said.
You sit down next to her on the couch. You start to listen to her talk about her family drama and she likes that you are listening to her. She is surprised that you are single. You did change the conversation to make her laugh and she did laugh at your funny stories.
There would be times that you would stay late at work, to edit pictures. Lena would also stay late and work long hours and she would skip lunch.
“You didn't have to buy lunch for me, I’m your boss,” Lena said.
“I don't forget you are my boss. It’s passed eleven and it's nighttime and you skipped lunch. You are my boss from morning until eight at night, so right now just think of it as two friends having a late dinner together” You said.
Lena couldn't help to smile because of your response.
“What kind of pizza is it?” Lena asked.
“I didn't know what you liked so I picked pepperoni” You smiled.
“I do like pepperoni on my pizza. Okay, I will join you for dinner” Lena smiled.
You smiled and put the food on the table. She sits next to you, then you and Lena start to ask questions about each other. She is starting to have feelings for you but won't tell you tonight. After a while of eating and talking, you take her home.
“Thank you for taking me home,” Lena said.
“Anytime. I couldn't let you go home alone at this time, Lena” You said.
She briefly held your hand.
“Thank you and get home safe,” Lena said.
You are in shock that she is holding your hand.
“Bye,” You smiled.
You watched Lena go inside her building then you went home.
————
Before heading to work, you noticed Lena following Morgan Edge. You start to follow Lena but she doesn't notice you just yet. You take pictures of Morgan Edge talking to Benjamin Lockwood. You have super hearing and you hear them talking Supergirl and your alter ego. Lena starts to walk away then she bumps into you, and you almost drop your camera.
“Y/N what are you doing here?” Lena asked.
“I can ask the same for you. I saw you following him then i started to take pictures. Why are you following him?” You said.
“We can't talk here, let's go,” Lena said.
You went to the office with Lena. She starts to tell you why she is following him.
“He is poisoning the water in the poor neighborhoods and lying about me. I wanted to catch him in the act so people can see it's him, not me” Lena said.
“Oh. We will figure out how to catch him, don't worry about it you can trust me” You said.
“I do trust you that you won't tell anyone,” Lena said.
“I won’t tell anyone,” You said.
“Okay. Get to work” Lena said.
You leave her office then you sit at your desk. You are thinking hard about how to get him to confess or catch him in the act. But you don't tell your sister about it and she has been very busy.
The next night, you started to follow Benjamin and Morgan. You caught them spilling toxic waste into the pipes and you started to take pictures of them. Then someone brings out Lena tied up and you take a picture. Now, you change clothes and they are about to hurt her. But you used speed to stop Benjamin from hurting her.
“You won't hurt anyone else,” You said.
“Where did you come from?” Benjamin asked.
You don't say anything and you start to fight Morgan and Benjamin. You used a metal pipe to tie them up but they are passed out. You easily punched them and they passed out.
“Lena, are you okay?” You asked.
The cops arrived and you ripped the zip tie around her wrists. You tell them what happened and they believe you and Lena. You pick up Lena and fly her to the office.
“Thank you, Y/N,” Lena said.
“What?” You asked.
“I know it's you. Because of your camera and the last letters on your camera,” Lena said.
You look at your camera, you forgot to take it off. You didn't think about it because you didn't want her to get hurt even if you were two seconds late.
“I was following them to get proof then I saw you. I didn't want them to hurt you and I forgot to take off my camera” You said.
“I thought you would deny it,” Lena said.
“I didn't want to lie to you, Lena,” You said.
“Thank you for not lying to me,” Lena said.
Lena slowly leans in and you feel her lips on your lips. She starts to kiss you and you start to kiss her back and her lipstick gets on your lips.
———-
You and Lena started dating in secret. But you two keep it professional at work and she doesn't give you special treatment. Tonight, you went to Lena’s condo to spend time with her. You and Lena are making tacos and she is having fun making tacos with you.
“I never made tacos before” Lena smiled.
She drinks her wine.
“Do you like making it?” You asked.
“With you, Yes I like making it” Lena smiled.
She gives you a peck on the lips. After dinner, you and Lena cuddle on the couch to watch a scary movie. She hides her face on your chest and you have your arm around her. Again, she hid her face in your chest, and she held on to your shirt.
“We don't have to finish the movie, I will watch it on my own I want to see how it ends,” You said.
You stopped the movie and she slightly moved away.
“I didn't expect the movie to be scary,” Lena said.
“You didn't have to yes to watch a scary movie. We could have watched a chick-flick movie” You said.
“I do like other genres of movies not just chick flicks, Y/N” Lena said.
“I know, i was just teasing. We could play a game? Have any board games or cards?” You said.
“I have a game called Jenga, it belongs to your sister and she forgot to take it home. We could play that game” Lena smiled.
“Let’s play” You smiled.
She takes out the game and you start to set it up. You and Lena became competitive and she doesn't stop smiling at you. Lena is happy that doesn't have to change who she is with you and you accept everything about her. Lena won the first round then you and Lena started to play again.
A bit later, she asked you to stay the night. You cuddle with her in bed while talking, and you and Lena start to kiss each other. She has her leg on top of you and you two are smiling at each other. Your hand is under her shirt and she has her hand on your cheek and she kisses you again.
✫ ✯ ✬ ✫
It’s starting to get cold in National City because it's December. You and Lena are in a serious relationship and taking it slow. You are happy that you are able to tell her stories about when you used to live on Krypton, she does enjoy the stories.
“You didn't celebrate Christmas on Krypton?” Lena asked.
“No. We didn't have Earth holidays on my planet. When I got to Earth, Eliza introduced us to Earth holidays and I liked Halloween, Christmas, and summer because I got to play with fireworks. Do you have Christmas traditions?” You said.
“No. Mother and Lex are not the types to celebrate holidays to spend time with family. Mother was busy with work and Lex well… he just didn't have much time with me besides playing chess. I was shipped to boarding school and spent the holidays alone” Lena said.
“Oh, well that wasn't fun to spend the holidays alone,” You said.
“I got used to it,” Lena said.
You used your strength to move the tree where she wanted it. Then you and Lena start to decorate the tree together and she is happy that she is with you on the holidays. After decorating the tree, you start to put Christmas decorations on the wall while she puts decorations on the shelves of the fireplace. Then you and Lena started to bake Christmas cookies together.
You are spending more nights at Lena’s condo. She did make space for your clothes and items in the closet and bathroom. She takes a shower and then puts on your hoodie to be warm. She is lying on her side and you are on your side behind her, and you have your arm around her and her fingers go between your fingers.
The next day, you and Lena leave the city for the weekend. She booked a hotel in a small town just to be alone. It started to snow, you decided to convince your girlfriend to build a snowman. You tried to roll a big snowball, but you missed-placed your foot, and you fell on top of the snowball.
“Not funny, Lena,” You said.
“It is funny, that's why I'm laughing” Lena giggled.
She does help you stand up. Then she started to wipe the snow off you then she kissed you on the lips.
“Better?” Lena smiled.
“No” You smiled.
“Let me try again,” Lena said.
She grabbed your scarf and she started to kiss you.
A bit later, after playing in the snow, you and Lena went to a skating rink, she held your hand while skating with you.
“I haven't done this in many years,” Lena said.
“Last time I did it, I was a teenager,” You said.
You stopped.
“What’s wrong?” Lena asked.
“Someone is in trouble, they are yelling for help,” You said.
“Go, I will wait,” Lena said.
“Grab dinner and wait for me at the hotel,” You said.
You kiss her on the lips before she says something, and you quickly leave. You changed into your suit and you went to save a family from almost driving off the cliff. Then someone needed help, their car got stuck on the train tracks and you stayed out for a while saving people. Lena did buy dinner and she headed back to the hotel.
————
Lena planned a toy charity event, people are donating toys and other items to the kids in the hospital. You are taking pictures and you have a Santa hat on your head and a Christmas vest that Lena bought for you. Kara is at the event and sees you sneak away but at first, she doesn't you are following Lena. Kara got curious and started to follow you toward the hallway which was isolated, then she gasped.
“You kissed Lena!” Kara said too loud.
Some of Lena’s lipstick is on your lips.
“Were you following me?” You asked.
“Don’t change the subject. Wait, are you two dating?” Kara said.
“Yes, I’m dating your brother and no one else knows about us,” Lena said.
“This is great. I’m in shock but I’m so happy for you two. Why you didn't tell me?” Kara said.
“I was going to tell you,” You said.
“You can't tell anyone, we have to be professional,” Lena said.
“I won't tell anyone. But they need you to make a speech, go now”’ Kara said.
Lena left to make a speech and you wiped your lips.
“We should head back,” You said.
“You are in love with Lena” Kara teased
“What-… no I’m not in love” You lied.
“Yes, you are. So cute you try to deny it but I know you are in love” Kara giggled.
“I haven't told her yet that I’m in love with her. And she is about my powers but I didn't tell her that you have powers also, but I think she knows about it” You said.
“She is smart, but I think I should tell her. But I’m happy for you, I thought after what happened with your last ex you stopped looking for love” Kara said.
“Lena is different and she isn't just anyone. I told her not to give me special treatment at work but she did buy this watch for me as an early Christmas gift” You said.
You show your sister the watch and she gasped.
“I saw this watch online it cost over ten thousand dollars” Kara gasped.
“I didn't ask for it, she just surprised me with it,” You said.
“You should invite her to meet Eliza for Christmas” Kara smiled.
“Good idea. Mom will like her” You said.
You call Eliza ‘mom’ and Kara just calls her by her first name. You and Kara head back and you start to take pictures of everyone and the gifts for the kids and their families. Much later, you go to Lena’s condo and you invite her to meet Eliza for Christmas and she agrees to go.
“Do you think she will accept our relationship?” Lena asked.
You wrap your arms around her waist and she puts her arms around your shoulders.
“Of course, she will accept you and our relationship. You are beautiful, smart, funny, and caring. I can go on about why she will like you” You smiled.
She kissed you on the lips.
“And you are handsome, funny, a bit nerdy, and smart” Lena smiled.
You kiss her and she doesn't stop smiling.

Lena’s late.
In her defense, the conference call with Japan had been rescheduled twice and they were ready to pull out of the project if she didn’t speak with them directly.
So, Lena’s late to Al’s for the groups weekly hang out. She ended up coming straight from the office. She is definitely overdressed for the bar, clad in black red bottoms, a tight forrest green pencil skirt, a white silk blouse patterned with black triangles, and a matching green waistcoat. Her hair had been set loose from its tight bun two hours into the four hour conference call, leaving her inky black locks wavy.
Arriving at the bar, Lena thanks Frank as he opens the door for her.
“Thank you, Frank. You can have the rest of the night off, I will probably end up going to Kara’s after.”
“Thank you, Ms. Luthor. I will go home, but I’ll keep my cell on. I’d prefer for you to call me if you need a ride.”
Lena rolls her eyes good-naturedly, used to Franks protests of her finding other transportation.
“Good night, Frank.”
“Good night, Ms. Luthor. Have fun.” Frank tips his hat, waiting for his boss to enter the bar before returning to the drivers side and heading off.
**********
Lena enters the familiar building. It’s outside is rather unremarkable at first glance, which it should be for a business trying to keep a low profile.
Since the CEO has become a regular customer at Al’s, the general population has accepted her presence, or at least ignore it in favor of avoiding Kara’s wrath.
Lena navigates her way to the back, looking for any familiar faces on her way to their regular table. She doesn’t find any, but she does hears Kara’s characteristic voice calling her name.
“Lena! Over here,” she calls, waving her hand obnoxiously in the air. Kara is smiling profusely, perfect white teeth on display and cheeks a rosy hue.
“Stop that! You’re making a scene,” Alex scolds, trying and failing to pull Kara’s hand from the air. Kara ignores her sisters protesting, only ceasing her actions when Lena is near enough to grab.
Just as Lena starts to address the table, Kara pulls her in for a tight hug. One arm surrounds Lena’s back while the other pulls Lena in by the shoulders. The greeting is rather enthusiastic, even for the alien equivalent of a golden retriever.
“Lena! Hi! What took you so long?”
Lena is caught mildly off guard, but returns the hug anyway.
“Hi, darling. I got caught up in the office. Are you having fun?” Lena questions before releasing Kara.
“Yes! Nia got me shots of Aldebaran Rum to ‘loosen me up’, and she made Brainy try Xenorian beer. It tastes like smoked cotton candy!” Kara shares happily, entertwining her hand with Lena’s before the brunette can stray too far.
“Shots? How many have you had?”
“Three! Wait—maybe four. And a couple of those beers. They were really sweet!”
Interesting.
“Hey, Kara, why don’t you go get me a whiskey? Take my card and start a tab for the table.” Lena hands over her Platinum American Express card. She figures giving Kara and errand to run will allow her a few minutes to get to the bottom of what’s going on here.
“Okay! I’ll be right back,” Kara exclaims happily, pressing a kiss to Lena cheek before heading to the bar.

Everything was in place. Lena dropped down into the passenger seat of Jess’s car. The trunk was loaded with presents and books and Lena was ready. Jess fired up the engine of her 2009 Honda Civic and off they went, navigating National City traffic.
Lena’s stomach was full of butterflies. She had her hood up and was dressed down in sweats, not looking at all her fashion place self. Jess parked by one of the service entrances and a security guard let them in with a curt nod. Lena had dropped him a four figure tip to cooperate.
The kids were gathered in a common area on the fifth floor pediatric intensive unit, ranging in age from three to fifteen. Lena fought the lump that formed in her throat as they gathered, some of the younger ones in the laps of the older.
Lena started with a reading of How the Grinch Stole Christmas, complete with sill voices and big smiles and a lot of effort on her part to keep tears from welling in her eyes.
Some of these kids were having their last Christmas, and some of them knew it. Some didn’t. Others would go home, and a lucky few would help change the world with their participation in clinical trials.
On some level Lena knew that Kara would show up eventually- she’d been dropping in regularly enough, once learning that Lena read to the kids.
Sure enough, she showed up as the kids were eating turkey and mashed potatoes and gravy prepared under the supervision of a Michelin star chef that Lena had hired at great expense to prepare their dinner.
Supergirl, all swagger and power, strode into the room. The response was curious. They knew her of course, and she’d been there enough times, even read to them, that there was a peculiar familiarity to her visits and only the new kids got truly excited.
They were more excited by Kara’s plus one. She’d brought with her the most perfect Santa Claus that Lena had ever seen. No fake beard here; every whisker was real, as was every crease and wrinkle. Even his costume was flawless, velvet coat and paints lined with genuine fur. He had a huge beach sack thrown over one shoulder and greeted the kids with a cheer, setting to work handing out gifts.
Kara came over and stood next to Lena.
“You’ve outdone yourself this time,” said Lena.
Across the room, Santa gave a hearty Ho! Ho! Ho!, and had taken up a seat to invite kids onto his lap.
“Believe it or not,” Kara said, “he owes me a favor.”
Lena snorted and Kara winked.
“‘sides, I live at the North Pole, too. Sort of.”
Lena watched the man with the children. He really was quite good, a consummate professional.
She looked over at Kara. There was a twinge of pink in her cheeks and snowflakes melting in her hair, and her new suit showed off her muscular arms. More than that, there was a look of a wistful joy in her eyes as she watched the kids enjoy themselves.
Lena’s heart would have grown three sizes that day, if it didn’t already feel like it might burst through her ribs every time she looked at Kara, really looked at Kara.
She’d long ago admitted her feelings to herself- it was getting them out that was the problem, even now.
Across the room, Santa Claus stood, startling Lena out of her reverie.
“I’m sorry kids, but I really must go. Lots more visits to make tonight!”
He stood and walked over to Kara. “I do have that one stop to make before I begin my rounds proper. Shall we?”
He even had the perfect Santa voice.
Kara turned to Lena and offered a hand.
That was how Lena ended up in something like the setup for a bad joke: Riding in an elevator with Santa Claus and Supergirl.
It was actually rather awkward. Kara opened the roof access door and motioned for Lena, and the Santa Claus impersonator followed her out. Kara went last, lingering by the door.
“May we speak in private?” Santa said.
“Sure,” said Lena, happy to play along. She pulled her hood up against the chill and walked a few dozen paces from Kara, and Santa turned to face her.
“I’m sorry I didn’t bring you that easy bake oven you wanted when you were six,” he began.
Lena’s face fell. Lillian had exploded at her when she asked on Santa’s lap, a much less convincing Santa, and asked for the silly cooking toy.
She’d screamed that menial tasks were beneath a Luthor and Lena was supposed to ask for the American Girl dolls that Lillian had already bought, and what an ungrateful, spoiled little bitch she was. It was the first time that Lillian had called her that and far from the last; she’d added many insults to it over the years, like stupid or lazy or, most painfully of all, fat; dropping that one had sent Lena into a spiral of crash dieting that almost turned into full blown bulimia by the time she graduated from high school.
She’d never told anyone about the easy bake oven. Not even Kara.
Before Lena could demand an explanation or even speak, Santa reached into his bag, withdrew something, and handed it to her.
Lena took the stuffed bear on instinct. When she did she knew it was more than a bear. As her hands touched the somewhat ratty fur and she saw the little tear in his left ear she knew, she knew.
When the Luthors took her in, Lillian destroyed everything of her old life- everything of her mother, as if to erase her from ever existing. It was spiteful, and hateful. Lillian couldn’t revenge herself on his husband’s mistress so she did it to her child.
She’d burned Lena’s stuffed animals. They were all gone, reduced to ash.
Except… except…
“Clive?” Lena whispered, hot tears burning down her cheeks. “This is impossible, how…”
He placed a gloved hand on her shoulder and Lena felt a wave of indescribable shock roll through her. Something just… opened.
Her mind filled with an image of perfect clarity, and a song fresh and bright in her ears. Her mother’s voice and the distant sound of the sea that would eventually take her. All her life Lena could barely remember her mother- she clawed at scraps, more able to feel her than truly remember her.
Not anymore. As she clutched the bear to her chest, memory flooded her mind like warmth from a hearth fire filling a cold room. She grinned like a fool and choked back sobs.
“How?” Lena chirped out.
“Kara asked me to bring you something very special, and I do owe her a favor. I really must get going, though.”
Then she heard it. Jingling bells.
Lena had seen a woman fly; said woman had saved her from splatting on the pavement too many times. She had never seen reindeer fly, pulling a sleigh behind them.
Wait.
No.
This was not possible.
Santa Claus threw his sack in the rear of the sleigh and climbed aboard. He threw Lena a wave.
“Merry Christmas, Lena Luthor.”
“Wait,” Lena called. “Did you bring Kara something?”
“What Kara Zor-El Danvers wants, I cannot give her,” he said, with a cryptic grin.
Lena stumbled back as the reindeer launched into a full gallop with a blast of air, the rider snapping his reins. It was only then that Lena noticed that the lead animal had a glowing red nose.
Kara stepped up behind her and put her hands on Len/ shoulders.
“Kara,” Lena said. “That was the real Santa Claus.”
“I know.”
“No, you don’t understand. That was the real Santa Claus. He’s real. Santa Claus is real and he gave me my stuffed bear back.”
As Lena turned, Kara smiled. “I know, baby.”
Lena swiped at her cheeks.
“I-I don’t know how you did this, but thank you. Thank you so much. I don’t even know what to say.”
Kara stepped closer, into her space. Very gently, she brushed away one of Lena’s tears with the pad of her thumb.
“You don’t have to say anything.”
“He said he couldn’t get you what he wanted. I find that hard to believe.”
“He can’t just give it to me because it’s not his to give. He did give me this, though.”
Kara reached under her cape, drawing out a small twig with a pair of scalloped leaves and some red berries.
“Is that mistletoe?”
“Yeah,” said Kara.
She lifted it over her head and held it there, smiling at Lena.
It took a moment for her brain to catch up. Kara was holding the mistletoe over her head. She was under the mistletoe.
Lena faltered for just a moment, but then stepped forward, closing what little gap was left between them. Kara was every inch the dashing prince as she put her arm around Lena’s waist, spinning her a little as the other hand cupped her chin and tilted her head just so for Kara to place a gentle, loving, and utterly devastating closed-mouth kiss on Lena’s lips.
Suddenly Lena understood what it was that Kara wanted and for the second time in as many minutes her heart soared and Lena threw her arms around Kara’s neck and they swayed there like dancers amid the snow flurries until Kara flew them home.

Would it really kill you if we kissed? Final
Supergirl. Baby Danvers. Kara Danvers x B!D!Reader, Alex Danvers x B!D!Reader, Lena Luthor x Reader, Esmé Danvers.
Word Count: 3360.
Previously on part 2. Part 3 of 3 :)
You touch down on the rooftop of your apartment building, the cool night air sharp against your skin, a reminder that you're back in National City, back to the familiar world you tried so hard to leave behind. Once inside, you let your bag drop to the floor, the sound echoing in the silence, and you almost laugh at the absurdity of it—like you thought coming back here would make any of it feel better. But here you are, alone in your apartment, as if you could somehow outrun everything boiling up inside you.
You slump down onto the edge of your bed, and the silence presses in, thick and suffocating. You want to tear it apart, rip through this emptiness just to feel something else, anything else. But all that’s left is the quiet of the apartment against the loud of your raging mind.
You try to remind yourself why you came back—how you told yourself that being away from your sisters, from Lena, would give you space to breathe. But the air here feels no less heavy, and every time you close your eyes, you’re back on that island, hearing your own voice cut through the night,. Every word you threw at Kara and Alex loops through your mind, over and over, until you can barely tell where the anger ends and the regret begins.
And then, there it is, unbidden: the memory of Lena’s smile, her soft laugh, the way her hand lingered just a fraction too long when she’d touch your arm. You wonder what she’s thinking now—if Kara told her what happened, or if she just thinks you’ve vanished, abandoning this one fragile connection you were terrified to admit even to yourself.
You let out a shaky breath, pressing the heels of your palms into your eyes. It doesn’t matter, you tell yourself. You’ve burned the bridge, and you don’t deserve to look back. But the ache doesn’t ease; it settles deeper, a constant reminder that you’ve pushed away everything and everyone that mattered, leaving you with the raw, hollow ache of being completely alone.
The next day, you fly to Midvale, drawn back to the place that’s always felt like home. J’onn and M’gann assure you they have things covered, their gentle understanding a stark contrast to the turmoil you’re carrying. But here you are, hoping that maybe, while back home, the guilt from burning all those bridges won’t feel as heavy.
The moment you arrive, Eliza’s face lights up, her arms open wide for you. “My little girl,” she says softly, pulling you into the kind of hug you didn’t realize you needed. “Wait—I thought you were all off on an island somewhere? Didn’t you go for a vacation?”
"Hmm, yeah. I—I had to come back early because of this… thing." you reply, the words clumsy on your tongue, but she doesn’t press.
Instead she scans your face. Eliza might not be your birth mother, but damn does she know you like one. She can see right through you, and you don't know if you're just that easy to read or if the people in your life just know you deeply.
"Well then, come in. Let's do the thing." She guides you inside the house, and you try to distract yourself with old feelings and memories instead of the new ones.
It's later that day when Eliza settles on the couch next to you, watching you with that quiet, gentle patience she's always had. "You know,” she begins softly, “you’ve always had the heart of a hero.”
“I think you’re confusing me with Kara,” you mutter, eyes fixed on the floor, but Eliza shakes her head, smiling.
"No, I'm not. Kara was always about the big thing—saving the world. But you, you've always been about the little things. Feeding the homeless, nursing birds and cats back to health, getting stray dogs into the house…" She sighs and you bite your lips so you don't smile at the memories. "You didn't even use your powers most of the time."
"Well, if I remember correctly, I wasn't allowed to."
"Oh, like that ever stopped the two of you." she chuckles, and despite yourself, you smile at the memories. "When you two landed here, Kara was mad most of the time. Just angry at the world and I got that, she had every reason. But you were always so kind. A sweet little thing ready to help anything that moved. Oh, and let’s not forget the plants,” she adds with a wink.
“Where are you going with this?”
She breathes deep. "That always worried me."
"What? You worried about me?"
“Still do, sweetheart. You had every reason to be mad too. But you never let your feelings show. You keep so much inside, bottled up.” Eliza reaches for your face, her hand soothing on your cheek, and you lean into the touch you so desperately need. “I don’t know what happened, but you’re allowed to be a mess, to explode, to embrace the difficult feelings.”
You lean into her hand, your eyes stinging. “Well, you might be glad to know that I… finally let it out.”
She nods slowly, eyes full of warmth. “And that’s okay. Just don’t hold on to those feelings for too long. Don’t let them chip away at the good, sweet part of you.”
You nod, her words sinking in as you finally let yourself breathe. Maybe it’s time to start processing all of this without the anger clouding it, without the need to keep defending your heart. You’re home now, and maybe here, you can start to sift through everything, piece by piece, until it hurts a little less.
Over the next couple of days, you stay in Midvale, trying to get your shit together while Eliza makes sure you’re giving yourself the space to feel every hurt, every regret you’ve been holding back. Slowly, you reconnect with parts of yourself you’d almost forgotten in all this mess, while Lena's words take root in some deep place inside—a place that cannot simply be brushed off or resolved, only managed.
You're not alone. You have to stop being alone.
When you finally feel ready, you head back to National City, determined to face the aftermath of your choices. The first thing you see when you walk into your apartment is Kara—waiting for you. The sight of her feels like a punch to the gut, all the words you’d left unspoken swirling around in your mind.
"Kara!" You manage to squeak out, your heart racing. "You're—you're back!"
Kara lets out a small sigh, her shoulders slumping as if the weight of your words has landed squarely on her just now. "I can't believe you said all those mean things and just... left us to sit with them."
You look down, biting the inside of your mouth, your heart tightening. "I know. I'm sorry. I—I guess I couldn't handle you being disappointed in me."
Kara’s expression softens, her gaze finding yours. "I would never be disappointed in you," she says quietly, stepping closer until she’s just a breath away. Her voice holds a warmth that reaches past your defenses. "I just don’t understand why you went so long without telling me any of this. Why would you keep it all to yourself?"
"Because I was afraid," you admit, the words coming out barely above a whisper. You clench your hands together, holding back the wave of emotions threatening to spill over. "Afraid to lose you. To lose everyone, actually." Your voice shakes, and you blink hard, forcing down the tears currently burning your eyes. "I can’t lose you, Kara."
Kara reaches out, her hand gentle as it lands on your shoulder. "You’ll never lose me, Y/N." she murmurs, her voice filled with an honesty that you can’t ignore. "But I don’t want you to feel like you’re losing yourself just to be my sister, or some idea of what you think I need you to be."
You breathe in, taking in the truth of her words, letting them settle into the cracks you’ve been trying to ignore. "It’s just... it’s exhausting, Kara. Trying to keep up with you and everything I need to be. And it hurts. All of it."
"I never wanted you to feel like that," she says, her voice filled with regret. "I thought we were doing this together. But now I see, I was so focused on how much having you by my side helped me, how much I needed you, that I didn’t think about how it felt for you."
You meet her eyes, finally allowing yourself to let down some of the defenses you've built up. "I didn’t know you needed me, I just felt like I was just fading into the background. Just the other hero, the one who's supposed to fit into your world. I didn’t want you to feel like I was letting you down."
Kara’s thumb traces gently along your cheekbone, wiping away the last of your tears. “You’ve never let me down, and you were never just another hero.” Her words are like a balm on a wound that’s been aching for too long. “Maybe I got so used to you being my strength that I forgot to let you lean on me too. But you’re not just my little sister or my backup out there. You were never second best to me. You’re everything good that I wish I could be.” Her voice wavers, a crack slipping through her steady tone. “I’m sorry that I haven’t always shown you that. And I’m sorry I made you feel like you had to be someone you didn’t want to be.”
The raw honesty in her voice, the way her words strip away the last remnants of the defenses you’ve held, reaches deep inside you. You take a shaky breath, nodding as the fear that’s held you silent finally dissolves, leaving only the truth between you.
"I guess things will change a little if you really want me there."
"Oh trust me, knowing you're there with me it's what makes me like supering so much." Kara’s hands cup your face softly, grounding you in this moment. “And Rao, Y/N, I’m not in love with Lena. I never was, and I never will be. And even if I was…” She pauses, her gaze unwavering. “I would always put your happiness above mine.”
“Don’t say that,” you whisper, your heart clenching.
“It’s true. You mean everything to me. But also—Lena’s just my best friend. I love her, but not like that, okay?” Kara’s voice is gentle, pleading. “Please, do something about it. You deserve to be happy with her. You’ve held back for so long, and I hate that you felt you had to.”
A small, trembling smile breaks through as the weight of everything you’ve been carrying finally lightens enough for you to throw your arms around your sister, pulling her into a hug that’s been building since this whole thing started.
“I’m sorry I yelled at you and pushed you away,” you whisper, a smile breaking through the last of your tears. “I missed you every day.”
“I missed you too.” Kara’s voice is soft, and you can hear the smile in it—a warmth that melts away the tension in your body, easing the ache you’ve been holding onto. The closeness, her arms around you, feels like the piece you’d been missing all along.
For a moment, you both stay like that, wrapped in the quiet, finally able to be vulnerable without walls, without all the unspoken weight between you. In her arms, with her smile in your ear, the ache doesn’t just ease—it starts to heal.
Kara places a soft kiss on the top of your head, her arms still holding you close. “Now go. Go talk to Lena.”
You pull back slightly, hesitating. “Are you sure? Are we… good?”
Her smile is gentle, warm. “I think we haven’t been this good in months. So yeah, I’m sure. Go to her!”
Your heart swells, and you lean in, pressing a grateful kiss to her cheek. “I love you,” you murmur, the words carrying more weight than ever.
Her smile widens, eyes shining. “I love you, ie.”
With that, you take a steadying breath, feeling stronger than you have in a long time, ready to face whatever comes next. And next is… Alex.
You knock on her door, expecting to be greeted with anger, but instead, you’re met with a soft, “Hey! Come on in. We’re still unpacking!”
“Auntie!” Esmé jumps onto your leg, her face lighting up with joy as you scoop her up and plant a smooch on her cheek, earning a delighted giggle. “Where were you?”
“Oh, I went to visit your grandma.”
Alex glances up from her bag, raising an eyebrow. “Did you really go to see Mom?”
“Yep.” You set Esmé down, and she dashes off, following Kelly's call to help organize her room—basically code for leaving you and Alex alone.
“So I don’t have to go full mom on you?” Alex asks, crossing her arms playfully, and a smile tugs at your lips.
“Guess not.”
“Good.” Alex steps closer and places a gentle kiss on your forehead, her warmth soothing. “Sorry I didn’t keep your secret.”
“No, Alex, you were right. It was eating me alive. I don’t know how I didn’t explode earlier. I’m sorry for making you feel guilty; you are the perfect big sis.” You offer her a soft smile, genuine gratitude flowing between you. “I’m glad I finally got it all out in the open.”
Alex reaches for your arm, her touch reassuring. “Feel better now?”
You nod. “A bit guilty from all the yelling, but yeah. I guess I needed that. It’s like the weight’s been lifted.”
“Have you seen Lena yet?” she asks, her expression turning serious.
“No. Just Kara.”
“Alright then. Thanks for stopping by. Don't leave without saying goodbye to your niece again. And go confess your feelings to Lena, or I swear to God, I’ll tell her myself.”
You narrow your eyes at her, half-serious. “Just because this worked once doesn’t mean it will work again.”
“Hmmm, I’m pretty sure it will.” she says with a smirk, a glimmer of encouragement in her gaze.
You give her balcony door a soft knock, peering in to see Lena by the couch, a drink in hand, looking more tired than before the vacation. Her bag still sits half-unpacked nearby. At the sight of you, she scowls but heads over, unlocking the balcony door and stepping aside for you to come in.
“Hey, Lena,” you offer, voice soft.
“Don’t ‘hey Lena’ me,” she snaps, crossing her arms tightly over her chest. “I’m mad at you!” She turns abruptly and heads toward the kitchen, leaving you standing by the door, unsure whether you should follow. “How could you? We were all excited to spend time with you, to finally have you around without your lame ass excuses, but you spent most of the time there hiding behind a six-year-old, and then you just got up and left without a word!”
“Lena, I’m so—”
But she doesn’t let you finish. “Did I not deserve a goodbye? Do I really mean so little to you?”
The hurt in her voice strikes deep, and you take a step closer, the words tumbling out before you can stop them. “No! Lena, you mean everything to me! I just… I couldn’t face you. Not with everything I was feeling.”
She finally turns to look at you, her eyes sharp, a blend of anger and pain. “Then tell me. What was so unbearable that you couldn’t talk to me? Because I was there baring my heart open to you. And you —you just left me! You left us! What's the point of a family trip if you're not even there?”
You swallow hard, heart pounding as you force yourself to meet her gaze. "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry. You're right, I never should've left."
"Of course I'm right!" Her hands turn into fists, angry bubbling up and you let her have her outburst, because now you understand how important they are. "I tried everything, Y/N. I begged you for your time. I tried to have you open up to me, but you just kept shutting me off! You've been shutting me off for months now, and God, what did I do to you?” Lena’s voice breaks. “What did I do to deserve it? Why do you hate me now?"
"I don't. Lena, baby, I could never hate you." You force yourself to come closer even though you are terrified of her reaction to what you're about to say. "I actually love you so much, I was scared of the feeling."
"What?"
"I love you, Lena. I've been in love with you since the first time I saw you."
Lena’s expression falters, the anger flickering into surprise, maybe even shock. She stares at you, words failing her as she searches your face, as if trying to decipher if she heard you right, if you’re serious. The silence stretches thin, and for a split second, you’re sure you’ve gone too far, that you’ve finally broken something you can’t fix.
But then, slowly, Lena’s shoulders drop, and a softness replaces the tension in her eyes. “You… you love me?” she whispers, her voice barely more than a breath.
You nod, a shaky exhale leaving your lips as you finally let the words settle into the open. "I love you. I know it might seem impossible after how I acted, and I know I messed up by pushing you away. But, Lena, every single moment, I’ve been in love with you. It was just… easier to hide than to risk losing you over it.”
"God, you're—you're infuriating, Y/N Danvers!" She grabs the collar of your t-shirt with surprising strength, prompting you closer. "If you didn't spend all of your time running and hiding from me, you would see that I'm also in love with you!"
“You are?” you almost stumble back in shock, but she’s holding you so tightly that you barely move. “You really feel the same?”
"Yes, darling.” Her tone is suddenly so sweet and soft, and yet she doesn’t let go of you. “I really do feel the same. Now you already made me wait for too long, so… Would it really kill you if we kissed?"
Your heart races as her words sink in, the weight of her admission filling the air between you. You stare into her eyes, searching for any hint of doubt, but all you see is warmth and a fierce determination that makes you feel like the only person in the world.
"It might kill me if we don't."
Without a second thought, you close the distance, your lips finding hers in a rush of pent-up emotion. The kiss is electrifying, a fire that you both had been trying to deny for far too long. Lena’s hands release their grip on your collar and tangle in your hair, pulling you closer as if she’s afraid you might vanish again. You melt into her, relishing the sweetness of the moment, the soft taste of her lips awakening every nerve ending in your body.
When you finally pull away, breathless, Lena’s eyes shine with a mix of mischief and sincerity. “See? That wasn’t so hard, was it?”
“Actually, I was terrified.” you joke, and she rolls her eyes at your antics.
“Well then, how about another kiss to make you feel less scared?”
You laugh, the sound bubbling up as you lean in again, savoring the sensation of her against you, the way her lips move with yours, the warmth radiating from her body. In that moment, the past feels like a distant memory, and all that matters is this connection between you both.
As you pull back, breathless and smiling, Lena’s gaze is intense, filled with promise. “You’re not going anywhere this time, right?”
“Never again.” you reply, your heart full of certainty. “I’m right where I wanna be.”

“Quantum entanglement is the phenomenon that occurs when a group of particles are generated, interact, or share spatial proximity in a way such that the quantum state of each particle of the group cannot be described independently of the state of the others, including when the particles are separated by a large distance.”
Or, Lena Luthor is one of the youngest most successful singers of her time, too many relationships to her name, and too many rumours. Kara Danvers is a successful soccer player who just moved to London and is about to start playing with her new team, their roads cross sooner than what’s planned.

♕ The Proposal | Lena Luthor ♕
Tumblr media
Pairing: Lena Luthor x reader
Warnings: none, just pure fluff
Summary: You finally pluck up the courage to propose to Lena, but it doesn’t go as planned.
Masterlist
_______________________________________________
I’ve done a lot of nerve wracking things in my life, especially during my time in the Army, but nothing could have ever prepared me for the nervousness and stress that comes with a proposal.
The constant sneaking around, organizing everything without Lena knowing, and worst of all, hoping she’ll say yes in the end.
“It’ll be okay.” Harper tries to reassure me for the hundredth time as she follows me around my gym while I organize some stuff. “Lena is head over heels for you. I’ll be dammed if she doesn’t say yes.“
“But—“
She throws up her hands and slaps my shoulder. “No buts, Y/N. You’ll propose, Lena will say yes, and that’s that! You two will live happily ever after and I will have to learn how to live with your lovey-dovey behavior for the rest of my life.”
I sigh and set down the punching bag I just took down. “Okay, okay. . .”
I’m still super nervous, but she’s right. Lena will almost definitely say yes since she’s been hinting that she wants me to propose for some time now, but there’s still a chance that she’ll say no after all.
“So, what’s the plan?” Harper asks when we make our way back to my office.
It’s Friday afternoon and I closed the gym a couple of minutes ago and because Harper wanted to see me before the proposal tomorrow she decided to stop by.
I shuffle some paper around on my desk, looking for a certain contract I’ve been meaning to sign and say, “I’m taking her to the beach house I rented tonight and then I’m going to propose on the beach tomorrow morning.“
Harper squeals and claps excitedly. “That’s perfect! She’s going to love it. A walk on the beach, just the two of you. . .” She sighs dreamily. “She’s one lucky lady.”
I laugh softly, finally finding the contract and signing it. “I’m the lucky one.”
Harper sighs again and nods. “You’re both lucky. You’re literally perfect for each other.”
“Thank you.” I smile at her and square away everything on my desk before grabbing my bag.
“You better text me as soon as she’s said yes tomorrow, I need a reason to open that fancy champagne Luke got,” she says, trailing behind me as I make my way out of the gym.
Luke is her new boyfriend. He’s sweet and kind, and reminds me a lot of Noah. They’ve been dating for nearly a year now, and I’m sure Noah would approve of him as his “replacement”.
It took a while for Harper to move on because at first she felt like she was somehow betraying Noah by dating again, but as time went on she stopped feeling guilty and now she’s as happy as I’ve ever seen her.
“I will, I promise,” I say. We walk to my parked car and I ask Harper if she needs a ride home, but she declines.
“No, no. I’ll take the subway. You just get home to Lena,” she says, giving me a hug. “And remember—“
“To text you, yeah, I got it.” I cut her off with a chuckle and get in my car, waving at her before driving off.
The drive home goes by faster than anticipated because there’s barely any traffic and before I know it I’m unlocking the front door of my apartment.
I got a new one after returning to National City from Metropolis because the old one just held too many memories and Lena’s been living with me for the last one and a half years.
“I’m home!” I shout, toeing off my shoes at the door and dropping my bag on the floor.
Lena’s reply is almost instant and it makes me smile. “I’m in the bedroom, Darling.”
I tap my thighs nervously and make my way to her, finding her where she said she’d be with a half packed bag on the bed. I didn’t tell her where we were going when I sprung this weekend getaway on her, but she didn’t mind. She’s just excited to get out of the city for a while and I can’t blame her because over the last month she worked extra hard on a new invention before presenting it to the public.
“Hey, how was work?” she asks with a smile when she sees me. The loose jeans and hoodie she’s wearing are a far cry from the things she used to wear when she was CEO of L-Corp and I can tell she’s way more comfortable like this. She still works hard, but she gets a lot more down time and the most important thing is that she gets to work on whatever she wants.
I close the distance between us and peck her lips in greeting before answering. “Good, I closed up earlier so we could get on the road.” I tuck a strand of dark hair that escaped her braid behind her ear and hum against her lips when she kisses me again. “You ready yet?”
“Almost,” she mumbles into the kiss. “Five more minutes.”
I smile and pull back. “It’s okay. No rush.“
“Thank you.”
She gets back to packing and I leave her to it, making sure I’ve got everything as well by going through my own bag out in the hall.
The ring box is shoved inside one of my sneakers because I didn’t know where else to put it. Lena is known to go through my stuff to find something cozy to wear and shoes are the only thing she can’t steal from me, so that was the best hiding place I could come up with.
My hands are already sweating thinking about her potentially finding it and when she emerges from the bedroom a minute or so later I jump involuntarily.
“You alright?” she asks and I nod quickly, taking the bag from her and picking up my own stuff to carry it all down to the car.
“I’m okay, just lost in though,” I say, kissing her cheek. “So? Ready to go?”
“Yes.” She smiles and we put on our shoes before making our way to the car.
Lena gets into the passenger seat and I load our bags into the trunk. When I get into the car as well, starting it and pulling onto the road, Lena takes my right hand and laces our fingers together.
“How was your lunch with Kara and James?” I ask, keeping my eyes on the road.
“Good. We went to that Italian restaurant on 5th and— Oh! Kara’s finally been promoted to Editor in Chief.”
My eyes widen but I keep focusing on the road. “Really? I mean, it’s about damn time, but still.”
Lena nods eagerly and out of the corner of my eye I can see the proud smile on her face. “I know, and James got a dog a week ago. He was almost as happy about it as Kara about her promotion.”
That makes me laugh as I make a right turn onto the highway out of the city. “Well, he’s got his priorities straight.”
Lena laughs as well, agreeing, and for the rest of the drive up the coast the car is filled with small talk and stolen kisses at red lights.
When we got to the beach house last night, Lena couldn’t stop gawking. It was truly beautiful and we roamed around the property and explored the house before having some dinner.
I payed the owner of the house to stock the fridge with a couple of things before our arrival, which he gladly did, so we cooked together and had some wine.
After that, we each took a hot shower before heading to bed.
I almost lunged at Lena when she went through my bag to look for something cozy to sleep in, which made her frown and laugh at the same time. Luckily, she didn’t find the ring, but she came close to it and the adrenaline that cursed through me after that kept me from falling asleep for several hours.
Blissfully unaware, Lena slept through the night though, and when she woke up this morning she teased me about looking tired and told me I needed to take some more time off than just a weekend.
Now, after a hearty breakfast and some coffee, we’re strolling along the beach with intertwined hands.
Lena keeps talking about an upcoming project, and I try my best to listen, but every time I feel the ring box shift in my pocket, I get distracted.
This is it. I’m going to propose. . .
There is no one around, and even though I’m glad about it, I can’t help but realize it’s because of the weather.
It’s the end of September and the weather for this weekend was supposed to be good, but it seems as though mother nature had her own plans.
The sky is overcast and a cold breeze has forced Lena and me to keep our shoes on and wear thick sweaters.
This is not what I had planned, but I will make the best of it. Besides, Lena doesn’t seem to mind the weather. When we left the house earlier the first thing she did was close her eyes and relish in the breeze that swept her hair out of her face.
I wonder if she likes it because it reminds her of Ireland and her mother, or because it’s just been a warm summer and she enjoys that it’s finally cooling off.
We continue walking, clinging to each other for a bit of warmth until Lena suddenly stops.
“Darling? Are you alright?”
“Hmm?” I look at her with wide eyes, feeling like a deer caught in headlights.
Did I miss something? Was I supposed to agree to whatever she was saying? Was she asking me something?
Lena frowns and raises a hand to touch my cheek gently. “You’ve been distracted all morning,” she says, adding, “And you’re jumpy,” when I jerk away from her other hand that comes close to the pocket the ring is in.
“I’m not—“ I shut my mouth almost instantly when she raises her eyebrow, looking unimpressed.
Right. I forgot she can read me like a book.
“What’s wrong?” she asks, once again looking concerned. “Did something happen at work? Or did I—“
“No!” Her eyes widen. “I mean, no. . .Nothing happened at work and you definitely didn’t do anything wrong.”
Shit, I didn’t mean for it to come out like that. She really hasn’t done anything wrong, I’m just nervous.
“Okay. . .” she looks skeptical and goes to take her hand off my face again, but I’m quick to grab it with my free hand and keep it there.
“I’m sorry,” I apologize quietly, closing my eyes for a moment.
“Hey, no. . . Don’t apologize.” She steps closer and lets go of my other hand to properly cup my cheeks. “I’m just worried about you. What’s going on?”
I open my eyes again to find her already looking at me with nothing but worry written all over her face, and let out a shuddering breath.
“I’m. . . nervous,” I admit which seems to only worsen her confusion and worry. She tries to step even closer, but I can’t risk her feeling the ring in my pocket, so I shuffle back.
“Y/N, why are you—?”
I cut her off by pecking her lips gently before stepping out of her reach completely. For a moment hurt flashes across her face, but then her eyes get drawn to my hand when I reach into my pocket.
I guess I’m proposing right now. I can’t lie to her, and I was planning on proposing in the next few minutes anyway. I was just hoping to initiate it a little differently.
I take the ring box out of my pocket but keep my fingers wrapped around it, preventing Lena from seeing anything. Her curiosity has definitely been sparked though, and her eyes keep darting between my hand and my eyes.
“What’s that?” she asks quietly, but I don’t answer. Instead I take a deep breath before smiling tentatively.
“Lena. . .” Her name effortlessly rolls off my tongue and something in the way I say it makes realization wash over her. Her eyes widen and she takes her own step back, raising her hands to cover her mouth in shock.
Oh God. Is that a good or a bad sign? Maybe I should have waited till we got back to the house? Or maybe I shouldn’t have planned this in the first place.
Does she even want to get married? Of course she does! She’s been straight up telling me to propose for a while now.
But what if she doesn’t like the ring? Will she still say yes? Oh God I hope so. Sam and Ruby helped me pick it out. Right. Sam and Ruby. I promised I’d call them too. . .
“Y/N?”
Lena’s shaky voice snaps me out of my thoughts and when I focus back on her I see she’s already got tears in her eyes. Her hands are no longer covering her mouth because she’s now got them balled into fists and tucked under her chin.
“Shit. . . Right.” I clear my throat a couple of times.
Focus, Y/N!
“Lena. . .” I start again, clenching the ring box in my hand. “This wasn’t how I was planning on doing this, but I guess it’s happening now, so. . . The last two and a half years were the best years of my life.” I laugh softly, nervously, before going on. “After I got back to Metropolis, I knew the first thing I wanted to do was see you, so I did. The way your whole face lit up when you opened your front door. . . It told me everything I needed to know. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life with you, so I asked you out right then and there and—hmpf!”
Lena’s lips on my own take me by surprise and I almost drop the ring when she throws her arms around my neck.
“Yes!” She laughs and cries into the kiss, frantically pulling me closer. “A million times, yes!”
Relief like none I’ve ever felt before washes over me and I relax instantly, kissing her back with a not so contained smile.
She wants to marry me! She actually said yes! Wait, I didn’t even ask her yet.
I pull back despite her protest and nudge my nose against hers. “You didn’t even let me finish.”
“You don’t have to,” she pants, brushing her lips against mine again.
“But I want to,” I complain against her lips which makes her smile and pull back. I expect her to say something, but she just looks at me expectantly with her bright eyes, so I unwrap her arms from around my neck and step back again.
I take a shuddering breath and sink down onto one knee. Tears fill my eyes at the way she looks at me with so much love and longing, but I don’t bother to get rid of them.
I had this whole speech planned out, and just a moment ago I did want to finish it, but now I just want to ask her to marry me.
I uncurl my fingers from around the ring box and open it, revealing the ring to Lena who sobs happily at the sight of it.
“Lena Kieran Luthor, ” I whisper over the sound of the breeze and the waves crashing onto the beach next to us, “will you marry me?”
She nods frantically and wipes at her eyes. “Yes. I already told you. A million times, yes.”
I take the ring out of the box with a sniffle and get back to my feet, smiling through my own tears. Lena immediately gives me her hand and once I’ve slid the ring onto her finger, she’s once again kissing me like her life depends on it.
I happily kiss her back, ignoring the way her tears land on my cheeks until I realize the it’s not just her tears I’m feeling on my skin.
“Shit.” I dig my fingers into her hips and look up at the sky with narrowed eyes.
It’s raining. This is really not how envisioned the day would go.
I look back down expecting Lena to be upset by the change in weather, but she’s just smiling, unbothered by the ever increasing amount of rain.
“I love you,” she says, standing on her tip toes to kiss me again.
I hum against her lips. “I love you, too, but we should head back to the house, I don’t want you to get sick.”
She nods and pecks my lips agains before grabbing my hand. “Yeah, let’s go.”
We stumbled over the beach, hand in hand, kissing occasionally until we get back to the house, completely drenched.
The rain has turned into a full blown storm now and I’m quick to get some towels so we don’t ruin the nice wooden floors on our way to the bathroom.
“Wait!” Lena says when I pick her up to carry her upstairs.
I raise an eyebrow and tilt my head in question. “What?”
“We have to celebrate,” she chuckles, brushing some wet strands of hair off my forehead.
“We will,” I say with a smirk, but she just shakes her head with a playful whine.
“No, not like that, although I’m not opposed to it later,” she explains, tightening her legs around my hips. “There’s champagne in the fridge.”
Ah, yes. She saw that last night and asked me about it and when I just brushed it off and said the landlord must have forgotten it, she believed me. Now it’s obvious why it’s there though and I can’t blame her for wanting to open it.
“Right, okay. Into the kitchen we go then,” I say with a chuckle. I carry her into the kitchen and set her down on the counter before grabbing the champagne from the fridge.
We look absolutely ridiculous in our wet clothes, and things didn’t at all go as planned, but that’s what makes this moment even more special.
I set two glasses onto the counter next to her and loosen the cork on the bottle, but then Lena wraps her legs around me and pulls me closer before swooping down and kissing me softly.
Her lips are just too damn distracting and all I can focus on is her and not the way the cork loosens. That is until she pulls back and it goes flying with a pop, hitting me in the face right above my left eye.
I yelp and lift a hand to press my palm against my eye, almost dropping the champagne bottle in the process. “Ow!”
“Oh my God.” Lena takes the bottle from me and sets it next to the glasses. “Are you okay, Baby?”
I want to snap and say no because it really hurts, but then the ridiculousness of the situation makes me smile involuntarily until I’m chuckling and shaking my head in disbelief. “I’ll live.”
A smile is tugging at Lena’s lips too, and when she grabs my wrist to see my eye she sighs in relief. “I think so, too. It’s a little red, but it shouldn’t bruise. You’re lucky it didn’t hit your eye directly. Here, let me kiss it better.”
She grasps my jaw and pulls me forward so she can brush her lips against the offended skin. I smile and let her do her thing as the pain subsides, leaving a dull ache in its wake.
“Better?” she asks and I nod.
“Totally. . . Now, where were we?” I grab the bottle again and fill the two glasses, handing one to Lena before taking my own. “To us?”
She beams and clinks her glass against mine. “To us. I love you.”
“I love you, too.” I take a sip and set the glass back down, not waiting until she’s finished before pulling her off the counter again.
She squeaks in surprise and wraps her arms and legs around me, spilling some champagne down my back.
“Y/N!” She doesn’t get to set the glass down because I start carrying her out of the kitchen. “What are you doing?!”
“Taking you upstairs so we can have a bath.” I bend down in the hallway so she can place her glass on a random dresser.
“But what about celebrating?” she complains with a playful pout and I’m quick to kiss it away as I make my way upstairs.
“We can do that in the bath, too.” I wiggle my eyebrows suggestively but pause to see if she’s okay with it.
She just rolls her eyes and nods, her eyes sparkling mischievously. “You’re an idiot, you know that?”
I laugh and press a kiss to her neck, making my way to the bathroom. “I know.”

This one was very short and sweet, but I needed a break from all the Back To You angst.

“I’m just so tired,” Lena cries, leaning forward, and pressing her heating pad further into her stomach. “I don’t want to live like this anymore.”
She inhales deeply and releases the breath back through her mouth. It’s an instinct now– breathe through the pain, slow and steady. Steady and calm. Calm and consistent. Breathe so she won’t pass out, so her heart rate won’t continue to rise, so she won’t spiral even harder the next time the knife digs into her side and expands so far she thinks it might make the entire organ pop.
“I don’t want to be sick. I don’t want to keep doing this.”
She sniffs and squeezes her eyes shut. Hot tears trail down her cheeks as her nose begins to run. The heating pad is making her sweat now too. It’s damp around her shoulders and inside her armpits. Her back is sticky and so are the undersides of her knees. But if she takes her sweatshirt off, she’ll start to shiver, even with the heat cranked up.
So she pulls her arms around her and tries to ignore the wet spots on her back because somehow, she’s still freezing. And when she opens her eyes again, she looks at Kara, as if somehow, Kara could fix things. But all Kara does is return the same regretful glance.
“I’m sorry,” she says– like she had any say in this. “I’m so sorry. You don’t deserve this.”
Lena nods and bites down on the inside of her mouth. She hugs herself around the heating pad and presses it in so deep it burns.
She used to think it was true– nobody could deserve to live like this. It was a cruel fate to watch your body rip down its tendons like wallpaper, peel apart its muscles like expired fruit, and chip away at its bones. Lena had felt every last aggression and with each attempt to fight back– to savor the life she knew, was met with more anger.
Accusations over anxiety diagnoses and trauma, as if she’d committed a felony for having emotional pain too. Speculations over her weight, her age, and her family. It didn’t matter that one day, the vessel she was living in decided to tear itself apart while she was still stuck inside. All that mattered was that her symptoms, her personality, and her past, weren’t convenient enough to be taken into consideration.
Lena knew that kind of treatment wasn’t normal. She knew that at least, it shouldn’t be. And yet it was. So she rationalized it. She told herself that maybe she did something terrible in a past life. Something eons worse than anything Lex Luthor ever did, and this was her punishment. She told herself whatever vague, obscure story she could come up with in the moment because pain like this shouldn’t be allowed to exist without a reason. She’d tear down everything she’d ever believed in– destroy the fundamentals of science and existence and everything else she’s put a lifetime of faith in because she needs to keep herself on this Earth and if she doesn’t have a reason, she isn’t sure she can continue to stay.
“What can I do?” Kara asks her. “How can I make this better?”
Wordlessly, Lena shakes her head. Another wave is hitting her. It’s sharper and stronger than the last one, and God, she feels like she could puke.
“Just…”
Sit with me, she wants to say. Hold me.
“I don’t know.”
Kara looks at her with an expression like Lena just shot a baby deer and somehow, Lena manages to start hating herself even harder.
She hates herself for not being able to cope after years of being sick. She hates herself for still feeling the pain as deeply as she did when it first came on. Hates herself for not getting better like she was supposed to.
“I’m sorry,” she murmurs– the words are the only thing she believes in right now. “Kara… I’m so sorry.”
“It’s okay.”
Kara grabs one of the blue bags from Lena’s nightstand and unfolds it. Without a word, she moves behind Lena and sits so she can rest between her legs.
“Just breathe,” she says. “It’s okay.”
Lena does as she’s told and tries to focus on her uneven breaths. She watches the way Kara loosely wraps her arms around her stomach, where the heating pad is, and squeezes her thigh.
“Is this okay?”
Lena swallows and nods. Her brow furrows when the stabbing starts to grow again. Saliva fills her mouth.
“Am I hurting you?”
Lena shakes her head.
“No, it just generally hurts,” she says. She gets the words out as quickly as she can before she needs to swallow again.
Kara nods. She leans a bit closer and presses her front ever so slightly into Lena’s shivering spine. She lifts the bag just a bit so Lena won’t have to move if she needs it– something about the gesture only makes Lena cry harder. It overwhelms her so strongly the pain almost takes a backseat. She can feel the weight of Kara’s body hovering over hers, feel her breath on her neck, see her arm extending in front of her. The woman who’s always told her “I don’t do throw up,” is now waiting to catch her vomit.
Lena almost wants to tell her she doesn’t have to stay– she doesn’t want Kara to be feeling shitty too. So she keeps quiet, not wanting to risk her leaving.
