genuine question to anyone who wanted bai he to be a more prominent character after season 3:

what would she even do?

and im talking pre season 5 (iykyk). What would she do for the plot and the characters. She doesn’t seem to have any sort of relationships with the other characters other than being slight acquaintances (no, not even macaque, asides from her getting carried by him once she literally never interacts with him.), she doesn’t seem to be a reincarnation of a past self, she didn’t seem to have any powers, she’s just some person.

I think people have really gotta accept that bai he’s only purpose in the plot was to be the person the lady bone demon has possessed. Again, it’d be nice to see a scene of her coping with that but really that’s it.

I started this thought on Twitter and now I'm going to continue here.

It's very likely that my theory is wrong, but the more I think about it, the more sense it makes.

All good! This probably won't make sense at first, but let's keep an open mind for my first theory that came from scratch since I didn't see anyone talking about it.

The first thing I will point out is Wukong's glowing eyes in the scene of his battle against Macaque, I know many will say that he is only using golden vision, but his expression is so apathetic! So, the guy is LITERALLY breaking the face of the most important living being in his life, he should at least be looking furious like Macaque himself is in the scene!

Returning to the main part of the exposition, which does not fit with the expressions he normally makes when he is fighting seriously (example in season 3 in the fight against lbd, and in season 4 in the fight against Azure)

Wukong is expressive in these moments of struggle, he has a tendency to show his teeth and leave his eyebrows furrowed.

This is an expression he doesn't get when he's under lbd's control.

And in the scene we have of his fight against Macaque.

This theory of mine became even stronger when I remembered David Breen's tweet (one of the guys who participated in the production of lmk's script) talking about we only saw Macaque's point of view, but not the entire story (I lost the tweet and couldn't find it, so if you don't consider that part I'll understand, If I find it, I will respond)

You’d think I’d have less thoughts from this episode since it was not very plot heavy but i am not done bGKAMWOEF 

[Monkie kid season 3 episode 3 spoilers] 

Really thinking about Mk and Wukong’s dynamic in season 3 so far, as of episode 3 (rambling all this now cause i can’t watch 4 and 5 until later so getting this all out rn BGAKWEFMOW) 

The rest of the crew tolerate Wukong, at best. He’s not important to them in any way shape or form, aside from Tang who’s the fanboy but not totally personal invested in Wukong outside of his fantasy’s of being his BFF. 

But! 

He is important to Mk. And they know that. They see that. And they respect that, so they tolerate Wukong, even if they don’t really like him. 

Mei especially has no patience for his cryptic nonsense or the way it effects her best friend. 

Which, honestly, fair, he’s not communicating and letting Mk come to some conclusions that aren’t true and leaning into the mysterious mentor trope he thinks he needs to be, which isn’t helpful to anyone. 

When it comes to the crew, Mk is almost… blocking Wukong from them during confrontation, often times quite literally placing himself between them 

Basically acting as a middle ground man and attempting to communicate or make excuses for Monkey King, which honestly, isn’t really healthy. It prevents Monkey King from having to face some consequences and doesn’t help him learn to communicate, and Mk falls into the roll of apologizing for other people a little two easily.  

And again, the crew tolerates this because they know how important Monkey King is to Mk. He really cares about him. Even though Monkey King basically dips again, without actually leaving, Mk cares and wants to make sure he’s part of the group and even comfortable 

Part of it comes from Mk’s need to please the people around him

and his desire for validation and to have his mentor/father figure tell him he did a good job 

Mk is very loyal and he’d do anything for the people he cares about. Even blame himself for their behaviour and try to change himself because he’ll rationalize until he’s convinced himself he’s the problem. 

But, that doesn’t mean he’s stupid. 

He sees 

However, he’s quick to forgive and quicker to excuse, and Monkey King tends to breeze over things because confrontation is BAD™ for him and he avoids it however he can, usually by dismissing it and bulldozing ahead with positive talk  and acting like things don’t get to him. Which just feeds into Mk’s rationalization more bgsalkemfwe 

MAN THEIR DIFFERENT TRAUMAS AND HABITS CLASH SO BADLY GOOD GRIEF 

ANYWAY, just thinking about Mk as the middle man in this situation and how long that’s gonna be able to last with how serious things are and how Wukong’s inability to communicate is gonna continue to effect the group and dig him into a deeper hole until Mk can’t give him any more excuses or defend him (or if he’d even want to) 

The day when Wukong looks to Mk to convince the others to get behind him and Mk looks away is gonna crush me if it ever comes (Wukong too probs haha*sobs*) 

*shakes the monkey* COMMUNICATE GOSH DANG YOU 

Thing is, he’s definitely trying to communicate but it obviously isn’t working very well. Just with what Mk said alone with the 

“He’s in no state to waste his time on mere mortals, especially since now I don’t have my powers” 

LIKE THAT? THAT SOUNDS BAD 

But the reality of the situation is that Mk doesn’t have his powers. He and Monkey King were the strongest players to keep them from getting wiped out during a boss fight, and now that they’re both out for the count they’re in a lot of danger. Wukong knows this. He knows they’re in danger and that their best bet right now is him. He can do boss fights, he did them back during the Journey all the time. It’s a very serious situation and he’s their best bet, the easily killed mortals are not. 

Say it out loud though and it sounds horrible. “I’m more important than you right now.” When in reality it’s closer to “if I don’t recharge you’re all going to die so I’ve gotta get to the point where i can protect you and that means focusing on myself for a while until i’m up to game” 

BUT OF COURSE HE DOESN'T’ SAY THAT, AND MK DOESN’T REALLY TAKE IT THAT WAY, NONE OF THEM DO 

*shakes the monkey* COMMUNICATE GOSH DANG YOU 

Anyway, I lost my train of thought, the monkey is stupid and communicates a lot like my mom does BG;ALJKWEMFO Mk’s not gonna be able to put himself between the monkey and his friends forever, and as much of a peacemaker as he’s trying to be, real communication is what’s gonna save them and if they can’t get to that point good luck my guy 

This all started from how i just noticed the way Mk stands between his friends and Monkey King when they start getting annoyed with him *WHEEZING* AIGHT HEADING OUT PEACE 

(I’m still not over how gently Mk put Monkey King down after carrying him out of the truck tho actually bG;JLKAEMFOW)

as much as I like Bai He and think she’s super cute I actually kinda prefer that she hasn’t had any type of plot relevance and has relegated to being a background character since season 3.

it would be nice to have a scene or two where she grapples with having been possessed by a demon whose goal was to basically destroy the world and start it anew but that’s it really. Anything more would’ve felt like they were shoehorning her into the plot. Like especially her becoming Macaque’s apprentice/surrogate daughter. Cute fanfic/AU idea, not great idea in canon since the two have literally never interacted other than Macaque catching her from falling and carrying her lol

I have difficulty how to phrase my thoughts but I’m thinking of a post season 3 story, where Sun Wukong is nearly pushed to the point of losing control of himself. That would be part of a larger overarching arc where he faces some of the wounds of his past.

The reasons he doesn’t lose control is because a) of his fear what will happen if he loses control, b) his will, and c) now having a bigger support network that helps ground him.

b) and c) are especially important.

Season 3 had Sun Wukong possessed / puppeteered and lost control of himself already. If he’s growing and healing as I’m headcanoning it, it’d be an important moment to show that he’s made more connections. That he has more people he can and will rely on to help him, hold him back.

Just like Qi Xiaotian’s belief in Sun Wukong gave him the strength to break out of White Bone Demon’s possession, having that support gives him strength.

It still must be him to face that battle. Others can give him strength, others can believe in him. But what if they can’t reach him directly that point? What if he was cut off?

And this time, he’s facing only himself. One of the worst parts of himself, full of pain, rage, bloodlust.

He must be willing to accept that support, to overcome his fear, to let it fuel him. He must use his will to hold back.

He doesn’t have to believe in himself yet. He needs to believe that he also can become better on his own efforts.

Sun Wukong doesn’t win. Not that it’s possible. That kind of wound will take time to heal.

But he pulls back after he had slipped.

He holds out until he can ask for help.

He holds out until said help deescalates the situation.

He has stopped himself from hurting others when he was on the brink, when he was on his own. And he survived without making things worse for himself.

It‘s one of the most important victories when he once thought he wouldn’t be able to stop on his own once he went this far, even with help.

The external conflict stops because the group who is pushing him - a mix of humans and yaoguai - rethinks their stance that Sun Wukong has become weak or wanting to break him, when they see a glimpse of what is hiding in the depths of his mind. That which he holds back with his restraint.

They make a very hasty retreat.
