A few days ago I had the privilege to meet one of my equine heroes, Parys El Jamaal at his beautiful home, Michael Byatt Arabians. The old stallion's beauty exceeded my expectations. It took me a few days to realise that in my whole life with horses, I had never met a grown stallion that lives in the company of other horses, let alone a herd of mares. How come? On the one hand, integrating a valuable stallion into a herd is seen as a financial risk. Consider that the decision of the Arabian Horse society to make artificial insemination, embryo transfers etc. possible has had many questionable effects on the breed and the lives of our horses but amongst the benefits is that, as it allows us to "freeze" and preserve the genetic value of most stallions, they can cover mares from all over the world long beyond their own lives without ever having to leave their box... Or if they're lucky, their herd. On the other hand, people want to keep their horses safe and live long lives because they love them and consider resocializing their stallion too big of a risk for both, mares and stallion. It's a tough call to make but Michael shows that, executed with knowledge and horsemanship, it is possible. I think over all the care for our horses' bodies, we should not forget their minds. We owe it to them. Especially since often it is that one old stallion or mare on whose shoulders the success of an entire breeding program was built. No number of toys, blankets and things could have made Parys as beautiful as he was - full of dignity, standing in the grass, in his winter coat, alongside one of his mares. Thanks to Michael and the Parys Partners for that beautiful encounter and for doing things different. #paryseljamaal @michaelbyatt #arabianstallion #naturalhorselife #naturalhorsemanship #arabianhorse #legendaryhorse #sire
