NIA NAL [DREAMER] READING GUIDE!!

dreamer made her first official comic appearance in 2021, although you may recognise her from the tv show 'supergirl', where she debuted in 2018, the first trans superhero shown on television.

nia is not an alternate version of 30th century 'dream girl' nura nal, who's been around since the 60s, which is a common misconception. nia is nura's ancestor, from the 21st century.

I don't know if you guys've been catching up on the Lazarus Planet, but I wanted to share a part of it with you.

This comic is called Lazarus Planet Assault On Krypton. It shows us what's happening on the world from Jon's perspective.

To summarize: The Lazarus Island exploded because of a volcano and the substance that came out of it rained all over the world, giving everyone superpowers.

In this one shot story, Jon meets a new character named Ash. And their interaction come off pretty funny and flirty. If Jon wasn't with Jay Nakamura, I'd say that he was a new relationship interest.

Ash kinda reminds me of Catwoman, so there is that.

Anyways, do you guys think we'll see this character in the future?

Some Jon Kent 'stans' haven't read anything beyond like one volume of super sons and then about a hundred damijon fics and think they fully understand Jon and totally get him.

What is the best dynamic between Mercy Graves and Lex Luthor as well as story ideas they both play into?

as far as their dynamic goes, i really like how more recent comics have written them! lazarus planet: assault on krypton and DC’s year of the villain special #1 — both one-shots — do some fun things with their dynamic, and it carries over into superman (2023), though she hasn’t been used a lot there yet.

i enjoy the fact that he’s pretty chill with letting mercy talk back to him and call him out about things here, and completely ignoring her boundaries and invading her personal space and then waving it off by offering her ludicrous amounts of money feels very on-brand for lex. (year of the villain is in general a weird as hell arc but i adore mercy and this was her first appearance after lex went back to being a villain.)

i really like the genuine admiration lex seems to have for mercy, and the fact that she’s one of the few people he seems to trust.

the original version of mercy, in superman: the animated series, was created to be the series’ version of harley quinn — i.e., an original female character who was meant to be the villain’s right-hand woman — and to me, her relationship with lex is the most fun when it exists on the opposite end of the spectrum from harley and joker, where there is a great deal of respect and trust between them, but the relationship always feels very professional.

it looks like mercy is set up to be a major part of the superman (2023) annual as well as the next arc, so i’m curious to see what they do with her! historically, pre-flashpoint, i don’t feel like the comics really gave her much opportunity to be her own character, rather than just a hyper-competent henchwoman, so i’ve been enjoying seeing her have an actual personality in recent comics.

as far as story ideas… i really want to see mercy get to interact with people other than lex more, particularly lois. i’d also love to see a short run or a black label that focuses on her, but she probably doesn’t have the name recognition to carry her own book, even one that’s only meant to last a few issues, but i’d love to see a book following mercy’s perspective while there’s like. a normal “superman vs lex” plot running in the background.
