Midnight scales and sunlit smiles - A short one-shot I made for @fuzdog for Fandom Trumps Hate 2024. I didn't expect that story to get as much love as it did.💜

We made universes out of bitten lips and Remember today you are loved

Each time I can use a The Amazing Devil lyric as a title is a win in my book.

The Amazing Devil. I mostly keep it to song titles, but I do also write a lot while listening to their music.

A Sunday Afternoon

As the title suggests I wrote it in one afternoon. It was a Wednesday and not a Sunday though.

Bridges Over Lakes Of Salt closely followed by Apollo: Blood Wars neither of which I've managed to finish to date. I hope to finish at least one of the two in 2025, but we'll see.

Romantic pairing - not really any new pairings I want to explore

Friendship pairing - there are a couple of Raphael and Alec as friends fic I would love to start working on. The snark and salt is just too funny.

Overall it has to be a tie between Of Truths And Lies (even though I should probably edit it because it was one of the first fics I wrote and it shows) and Of Mistakes and Regrets (which suffers a similar fate).

I have no idea. I checked on AO3 but it only counts the number of kudos on the works that were last updated in 2024, not the kudos received so I don't know.

Nothing that has been published yet, but I started writing something with a co-author that we plan to publish in 2025. (If everything goes well that is)

24. Did you write any gifts this year?

So Many! Partially because I had several people who prompted a bunny and I gifted the story to them when it became an actual fic. However, if we're only counting gift exchanges and so on, then I have four.

Twelve little kids went out to play - I wrote for Fandom Trumps Hate 2024 as a gift for @fuzdog. This was and remains my scariest fic to write to date, solely because the trainees are the "main characters' and I was really worried I would annoy people because of that.

Midnight scales and sunlit smiles - A fic I also wrote for Fandom Trumps Hate 2024 and that was also a gift for @fuzdog. This fic was fun to write because of how adorable tiny!dragon Alec is.

A Sunday Afternoon - My last of three Fandom Trumps Hate 2024 fics. This one was written for someone SandyWormbook and was surprisingly tricky to write for how short it is.

Through veils of mist and crashing seas - Yes this isn't the full title but the full title is ridiculous. Anyway, this fic was made for a Secret Santa-ish Gift Exchange called Gifting Gremlins and it was very fun even if I went slightly overboard with the metaphors in that one.

25. Did you receive any gifts this year?

I diiiiiid! Not as a gift exchange because for the Secret Santa I participated in I got an Alec-themed playlist (which was so goooood). But I got several gifts all of which were lovely and deserve some love so:

Depends on what I want to write - angsty songs for angsty fics, happy songs for happy fics, and complete ridiculous chaos whenever the trainees are involved.

I don't think I have a favourite, I like all of them. Most fun to write has to be Crow's no good very bad day just because of how ridiculous and unhinged his POV is.

"Are you from Mags' glitter?" Crow blinks. "What?" "Are you from Mags' glitter," the kid repeats, acting as if saying it a second time would make the words make any more sense. "What the fuck's a Mags?"

What can I say Crow's POV is delightfully unhinged.

30. Biggest surprise while writing this year?

How much fun Catarina's POV is! I liked her on the show, but with how little we saw of her I wasn't certain I'd be able to ever write anything in her POV and yet it's so fun and easy.💜

01. How many words have you written this year?

checking ao3 stats, it's 98,298 words (wtf). some of that was written in the tail end of 2023 and some of it was old wips, buuuut there's probably enough unposted in my wip folder to make up for it.

02. How many works did you publish this year?

19! I know that without checking because I'm desperately hoping to write a 20th just to hit 20. It was...a prolific year. That's an all-time high for me, I think.

03. What work are you most proud of (regardless of kudos/hits)?

This is so hard because there are so many fics I would absolutely go to bat for this year. Not only was this a productive year, but I really, really loved writing so many of these fics. I'm actually going to give it to Attic Wife Guy because that's the fic that got me writing again after 4+ months of not writing at the end of 2023. It's the first sequel I've written in years. I don't actually know that it works tonally as a sequel, but it meant a lot to me to get it posted at the time.

04. What work of yours has the most hits?

Hilariously, it's My Strange and Sad Desire's Keen with 3,221 hits. I wrote that sitting on my balcony in a daze after watching the first 4 episodes of Meet You at the Blossom. When I posted it, there wasn't even a canonical fandom tag.

05. What work of yours got more feedback than you expected?

Domestic Cats, the only Word of Honor fic I posted this year. It's catboy fic in the jianghu. I underestimated how much the people wanted to read about barbed catboy dick, clearly.

06. Favorite title you used?

I don't knoooow. I feel like I did a great job with various bonkers titles this year, which is always my goal. My favorite is probably how good is that pussy, babygirl? because I think it's hilarious and thematically appropriate for that fic, but "Attic Wife Guy" is a close second.

07. If you use song lyrics, which artist’s songs did you pull from the most?

I almost never use song lyrics because I don't hear them. I've started using poetry this year, which has been passingly weird.

huaibao! They're the only pairing that got five fics because I'm more of a multishipper in my other fandoms.

Fanghua. I can't be normal about them. I don't want to be normal about them. I want to make them your problem.

If we count posted, it's "Attic Wife Guy" at 12k. If we're including what's drafted, it's The Things We Can and Cannot Say, which is somewhere over 20k. I'm sitting on a finished 3rd chapter, a partially drafted 4th, and then...a bunch of other scraps for the remaining 20-odd chapters.

14. What’s your shortest work of the year?

"rose colored glasses"! It's 500 words because almost all the fics in wick's series are in round 100-word increments and I wanted it to fit the bit.

15. What WIP are you taking into next year with you?

The only one that's posted is "The Things We Can and Cannot Say" and that's the only one I feel like I can guarantee I'll keep working on. I love writing that fic, even when I'm making myself crazy about it. The whole experience is very sickos dot png.

16.What’s your most common “Additional Tags” tag?

It's a tie between "First Time" and "Alternate Universe - Modern Setting" at four separate uses each. Long time Bats watchers will be relieved to know that I tagged 3 fics with "Rimming" this year.

A tie between Li Lianhua and Jing Beiyuan. I love a chatty liar.

Di Feisheng. As a POV character, I really struggled with him. He doesn't work terribly well with my natural writing style.

Difanghua. It's the pairing I should want to write most for mlc, so I'm going to try to honor that energy and make it work. We'll see.

I'm not counting re-reading while I'm drafting because that gives a huge boost to fics I got stuck on, so I'm giving this to go down sweetly, my lovingly unhinged dihua fic. (Have you ever wanted to read a fic about Li Lianhua fingering Di Feisheng's wound and then roleplaying Li Xiangyi while domming him? No? Well, look, I did.)

AO3 stats says 2,088, which I assume is just for works posted this year.

I'm going by comment threads here since I reply to comments, but am not currently caught up on replies. Unsurprisingly, it's "The Things We Can and Cannot Say", which is chaptered, with a close second place tie from "My Strange and Sad Desire's Keen" and "how good is that pussy, babygirl?"

23. Did you do any collaborative works this year?

Yes! @saki-the-cup-bearer-blog and I posted a dihua collab. She did gorgeous art for my fic A Place Not Unlike Home, which she also betaed. I'm also working on a dihua fic with @exitvelocities about Di Feisheng and Li Lianhua's jianghu road trip adventures.

"I don't like playing favorites," I say as I point directly at "The Things We Can and Cannot Say." Honestly, I love at least 75% of what I wrote this year. There are several fics I wrote that I loved that haven't made it into this round up, so I want to give an honorable mention here to Not Unlike Him in Form and Shape, the fic I couldn't wait to finish mlc to start writing. It's the pure distillation of the moment when I thought to myself, "Hooboy, I'm not gonna be normal about this show."

I was going to pick something lovely and thoughtful, but no, it has to go to this iconic quote from "how good is that pussy, babygirl?", which is both very funny and very in character:

2025-02-02 Apart (album # 7) Glad I finally could easily make what I wanted to complete before April, like I had planned to be the latest date to release my 7th album. This album "Apart" is the continuation of my album "Broken" which I released last year even though it doesn't have so much ambient touch like "Broken". But with "If you would love me" or "Watashi o dakishimete kuremasu-ka" and other songs it has this ambient or experimental boost which makes it special. So the range of the songs goes from jazzy to ambient to world and experimental but mostly with melodic pop as the base it. EP40 deployment against USA 02/17/2025 (and throughout 4 Nations):

second-lowest TOI of Swedish players with 9:54, only 12 seconds more than Ekholm (7th defenceman who originally wasn’t going to play)

lowest 5v5 TOI of Swedish players with 6:34, next-lowest forward was Nyquist with 9:10

had just two shifts in the third period (one on the power play and one on 5v5), last shift of the game came 4:53 into the 3rd period as Sweden defended a 2-1 lead for the rest of the game

avg. TOI of 13:32 throughout the tournament

it’s strange that Hallam didn’t put him out there for the last 14 minutes when they were playing with 11F/7D, and he does put stock in Pettersson’s defensive game:

“He’s put a really good effort in, taking responsibility with the puck, playing good F3, being strong in the defensive zone, forecheck. Maybe it’s not [against the USA], but if he continues doing that, he’s going to be in a good spot to produce more. With a player like that, it’s easy just to look at the points and the production. But as long as he does the right things for the team, he’s going to find that, then the production’s going to rise too.”

we’ll see if any more insight is forthcoming, but if there’s no physical issues with Pettersson I’m just puzzled as to the purpose of this? (edit: an anon brought up the sickness that’s going around the Swedish team, which would make sense but Ekholm and Arvidsson, two players who originally weren’t going to play, also got shifts late in the third)

being benched for the last 14 minutes of a 2-1 game doesn’t seem like it would help Pettersson’s confidence at all. if it was to send a message (e.g. that he hasn’t been good enough - which is understandable, lack of offensive production is a reason why Sweden didn’t advance to the finals), that specific message seems like something he might have already internalized over the past year, and I don’t think he needed a reminder of that

Let's Play Some $#!7! - Split Attention: Tavern Talk's Demo + Spiritfarer - Part 2

Come join me for another episode of Let's Play Some $#!7 | LPS$, where I play games to provide commentary to educate on game development! Provided I don't get too caught up in the game to comment, which, in a sense, is commentary in and of itself. Today, we finished playing Tavern Talk's demo! It was first introduced to The Weekend Game Show | WGS via Let's Play Some Demos! - Part 14, TIMESTAMP: 1:50:50! I had to cut it short due to the "30-Minutes Per Demo" rule. Another reason I finished the demo was to make sure I did the game as much justice as possible. 

Now, I didn't call this stream Let's Play Some Demos! | LPSD because I want this game. After I get it, it'll be a regular feature on the show. And, since the demo was finished quickly, I also played Spiritfarer: Farewell Edition! It was first introduced to The Weekend Game Show | WGS via Let's Play Some Demos! - Part 3! Part 1 was an LPS$ stream. And, had I known how short Tavern Talk's demo was, I would have finished it during the first playing of it. I was RIGHT THERE towards the end!

With all that out the way, here are my opinions, via the "Layered Compliment Sandwich": Tavern Talk drink-making mechanic is the most unique I have ever seen. Being able to feed Abdu a small amount of the drink we messed up instead of starting over is SUPER convenient! And the fact how much of each ingredient to use is dictated. And the Quest board is a nice touch as well, though, did the demo block us from putting up more than one? Because I would click on the board and it would just pull up the journal. That made me sad. Also, there was a random apostrophe facing the wrong direction. Despite those little things, I can't WAIT to get my hands on the game! I hope Fable does well... I hope I gave her the right drink... Spiritfarer is a delight! It's a cartoon-looking game with cussing in it! What a PLEASANT surprise! Especially since, I, as an adult, don't bother to look at the maturity rating. It was also refreshing to see a game of that type of art style throw a curveball like that. The talk about capitalism being horrible is a boon, too! One change I would make is to have in the Updates portion of the... journal?... either include Improvements or have a separate section altogether. Hopping back up to the BLUEPRINTS every time I forget what I need to make is time-consuming and irritating, considering how little time we have in the day. And is there a button to turn off excess animations? I don't need to see the "waking up" and "getting stuff out of the oven" animation every time. Clock's ticking and I have things to do! Those irritants won't stop me from continuing my personal playthrough, though!

Rumor: Out Of This World Returning To Streaming, The Pull Out Was All A Tactic

A new album has been submitted to streaming stores earlier today under Effy Giraffe Productions, Effy's brand new label. Out Of This World, with a brand new cover (pictured above). The album was pulled from streaming last year due to an apparent legal dispute between Michael Light, who claimed was uncredited and unpaid for his contributions to her most popular release to date. The producer allegedly had the album pulled and both parties were unable to reach a settlement.

On paper, it would appear the two settled their dispute. The submitted release, featuring 20 songs, lists Light as a producer on every song as well as a lyricist-- which one could possibly assume was a condition of the album re-release. Though, an insider revealed to us there was never any legal dispute. They claim:

Effy's apparent legal dispute with Michael was all a business tactic. The album initially released under SD Records; DK Records then bought out all of Effy's prior releases in 2018 exclusively releasing them all on Spotify. The re-releases were a part of a contract Effy signed with them, it detailed they'd make 75% of profits from her old releases, which hurt Effy seeing as Out Of This World was always her most popular release. So she saw very little profit. Her solution, starting her own label - which made its debut this year Effy Giraffe Productions. Then finally creating controversy that forced DK Records to drop the release from their catalog. In doing so she was able to retain control of the album and re-release it under her own label -- keeping 100% of feature profits. This is also why Effy still proceeded to release End Of This World, an album still under DK Records but a part of a deal she benefitted from due to contract negations last year. This was all a business tactic that worked out for her in the end.

If true, we could possibly be seeing the return of Out Of This World this year and SOON as we're starting to see the album was submitted to iTunes/Apple Music, Spotify, iHeart Radio, Deezer, and Tidal stores so far. The submitted release features new artwork, but it's important to note this wasn't submitted as a 2025 special edition or re-release, instead it still holds onto the same 2014 release date. The tracklist still consists of 20 tracks, though one difference:

Her cover of I'm Free was removed, originally it was the albums 10th track, this time Broke My Heart is in it's place (which was a droplet single released in 2018).

As of right now nothing is confirmed. We can confirm we've seen the submission to digital stores, and we were only able to acquire an unofficial statement from an inside source. Effy has not reached out to us for a comment and has been MIA on social media since the release of Darkness Inside Of Me: Immortal Echoes. We'd imagine confirmation will be evident after making this article public.

Since it's one of her most popular releases, hopefully it's true as this is such a smart way to do it!

2024 COMPLETED IT MATE

As the new year begins, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past 12 months. Over 2024 I have completed 12 projects, including several TTRPGs, one-page projects, and adventures for those games. I also included Fast Food Fascists and Detective Time in this retrospective, as I released them on DriveThruRPG this year, even though they were originally written and published on Itch.io in 2023.

The Land In The Mist

This was the first and largest project I have worked on last year. It is a horror game set between 1750 and 1850. While I am proud of it, I am working on reworking the rulebook to fix a few issues, which I plan to release in 2025.

The Trains of the Glorious Republics of the People

A unique game and setting. Everyone I have told about this has all gone, “Huh” or “Ooh, I want to play that,” which I see as a positive. I published a rulebook and a collection of five one-page adventures this year. I plan to clean up the rulebook and develop a full campaign for this system in 2025.

What I Learnt in 2024

2024 has been a year of learning for me. When I compare early projects like Detective Time and Fast Food Fascists to my more recent work, I can see significant improvement in my layout, writing, and even the art I produce. In regards to layout, the big jump in quality was made possible by moving away from Google Docs for layout and using Affinity Publisher instead. 

I’ve also gotten better at marketing and releasing products. I have figured out that advertising is important (shocker). I have improved at posting on Reddit, Tumblr, and Bluesky. If you'd like to keep up with what I’m working on or stay updated on my releases, feel free to follow me on any of those platforms. 

Another change I have made this year is now publishing projects on both Itch.io and DriveThruRPG. I have also started making itch.io the primary link to my marketing as 

Itch.io allows me to see where traffic to my projects is coming from.

Itch.io offers a more intuitive and cleaner interface for downloading my work.

Across all my social media, I've seen growth in both followers and interactions, which suggests I must be doing something right. Though may Patron is still quite unloved so I might try add more stuff to that.
