the Florida Panthers won the Stanley cup
and with that I have officially watched my first season of hockey.
I started as a fan of the penguins with an affection towards Flower as well. Now I’m ending the season a kraken fan, pens fan, flower fan and with more mattdrai interest than I expected.
The kraken stuff happened in mid April really suddenly, but ever since I started dabbling in hockey fandom in late 2021 I knew that becoming a kraken fan was going to happen eventually, a matter of when not if. Those beautiful jerseys, my love of cephalopods, and the team’s newness were strong draws but I still needed to have a special little guy to seal the deal. I discovered Adam Larsson in late march (thanks @angry-geno-is-score your fics* are brilliant<3) and what do you know that’s kraken hockey baby!
They’re probably going to be my main team next season. Still love the pens, their narratives are exquisite, but my brain wants kraken more.
(The mattdrai is a playoffs discovery that I fear I’ll never recover from. Leon’s disdain for the media and Matthew’s understanding that hockey is supposed to be theatre entertainment is *chef’s kiss*)
And with that here is a list, in no particular order, of some of notable things I saw this season,
: Tristan Jarry goalie goal!!! There was so much to like about this, the bench reaction, EK shaking Jars vigorously, Lars Eller going for a head boop and missing and then going for another one with more force, Ned trying to get Jars to skate over to do a fist bump line at the bench, Jars looking so bashful at the attention. :When Bryan Rust had that mustache and it was….kinda working. : Jeff Carter, the team Old Man that season, scoring like 3 breakaways and 2 short handed goals. : that shootout that went for 12 rounds (thank you Ned). : when Tanger got on all fours and started rocking back and forth in the locker room during Sully’s pre game speech (seriously wtf). : when Rusty scored in OT, had it waved off, and like ten seconds later scored again in a cooler way. : Sully becoming a grandpa<3. : when Jeff was a healthy scratch (the only time) and when he was asked about it was basically like ‘whatever, it doesn’t bother me, I just work here’. This was when I really started to like him btw. : Flower getting to 1000 games!! : Flower reaching the most wins!!! : kreider pulling out Matthew Tkachuk’s mouth guard and failing to throw it over the glass. : Florida beating Boston *again*. : that game were Sid got so pissed he screamed ‘no! No!’ at a ref so loud you could hear him over the crowd. He then proceeded to tell the ref ‘you fucked up’ :when Erik Karlsson made a mistake that sent the game to ot, scored in ot and then fell to his knees in relief. : that 10 to 2 victory over the sharks that was also Sid’s 1200 game. : sid scoring a goal off his ass. It had to happen one day : the pens ot win against vancouver back in Feb. The notable thing was that I was there with my dad and sisters <3
It's the little things that make hockey so fun!
Here's to a wonderful 24/25 season!
(*Seriously, if you haven't already, read Serenity in Those Deep Waters by @angry-geno-is-score on ao3, it's *fabulously* emotional and I can't recommend it enough)

"Under Northern Lights" - Scandia Symphony in Lincoln Center Debut
Tumblr media
The New York Scandia Symphony (Scandia) is a not-for-profit organization established in New York City in 1988 by Danish conductor Dorrit Matson, who serves as its Music Director. For over three decades the Scandia Symphony has presented unknown and rarely performed Scandinavian masterpieces to the American public, introducing innovative and creative symphonic programs to diverse and multicultural audiences of New York City and sharing the cultural heritage of Northern Europe with the public and as part of the international musical scene of New York City.
The Scandia Symphony engages 50 musicians, all selected among New York City's finest and under contract with the musicians union. All are dedicated to artistic excellence and welcome the challenge of reviving and performing quality works by classical composers which would otherwise remain unknown to the public.
The Scandia Symphony concerts take place in beautiful concert venues across New York City, such as Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, Symphony Space on the Upper West Side, Victor Borge Hall in Scandinavia House on Park Avenue, Billings Lawn in Fort Tryon Park, and and for 18 years of residence in Trinity Church in lower Manhattan.
Music director and conductor Dorrit Matson has distinguished herself in the world of symphonic conducting by bringing a vast repertoire of Scandinavian music to the attention and availability of the American public. Her concert programs present works by well known composers like Edvard Grieg, Carl Nielsen, and Jean Sibelius as well as more obscure compositions by Poul Schierbeck, Lars-Erik Larsson, Hugo Alfven, Bernhard Crusell and others.
In the 2023 season, the Scandia Symphony moved its popular symphonic concert series "Under Northern Lights" from Symphony Space to Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center. Scandia's Lincoln Center debut took place on April 13th, to much delight of both musicians and the enthusiastic audience that gathered and filled the venue to capacity (1100 seats). At the end all were standing and rewarded the orchestra with a long applause.
The orchestra, composed of 50 musicians, performed a unique program, starting with the Helios Overture and An Imaginary Journey to the Faroe Islands by Carl Nielsen, Denmark’s most renowned composer. Carl Nielsen composed the Helios Overture, named after the Greek god of the sun, while he was in Athens, inspired by the warmth of the sun over the Aegean Sea. An Imaginary Journey to the Faroe Islands was composed on commission from the Royal Theater of Copenhagen for a concert celebrating a visit to the Faroe Islands.
The concert continued with Concertino for Two Horns and Orchestra, by Friedrich Kuhlau. The German composer and concert pianist worked as a musician for the Danish Court after fleeing Germany to escape the Napoleonic invasion. He is mainly known for his piano music and flute works. He composed the Concertino for Two Horns and Orchestra in the early 1820s.
Next, the orchestra performed At the Castle Gate and the Karelia Suite by Jean Sibelius. The Finnish composer is among the most notable Scandinavian symphonic composers whose works became famous throughout Europe in the early 20th century.
At the Castle Gate is the first movement of Sibelius’s Pelleas and Melisande, written on commission by the Swedish Theater for the 1905 play by Maurice Maeterlinck. Sibelius conducted the music for the play, which was one of the most successful theatrical performances of the year. Karelia Suite is one of Sibelius’s most popular works, composed in 1893. The three-movement suite, inspired by the Karelia region of Finland, was extracted from incidental music that he performed for the students at Helsinki University in Vyborg.
The concert ended with the Swedish Rhapsody No. 1, Midsommarvaka by Hugo Alfven. A Swedish violinist, composer, and conductor, Alfven is one of Sweden’s most successful, appreciated, and performed composers.
Alfven composed Midsommarvaka (Midsummer Vigil) in 1903, and it was performed for the first time in 1904 at the Royal Opera of Stockholm. The Romantic rhapsody is a festive composition, as opposed to Alfven’s previous works, many of which is deemed more serious by critics.
This special "Under Northern Lights" concert production was organized on occasion of and in collaboration with the 2023 exhibition "Beyond the Light" at the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, exhibiting Danish art in the 19th Century and organised by AFSMK (American Friends of SMK/The National Gallery of Denmark).

Every year in October, my school performs this musical work called Förklädd Gud (“God in Disguise”). The poem is written by Hjalmar Gullberg and the music is composed by Lars-Erik Larsson. Most of it is sung, some parts are instrumental and some parts are recited.
The poem is about Apollo’s time as a mortal serving the king of Thessaly after he killed the cyclops for making Zeus’s lightning bolt that killed Asclepius and so on. The message is that the gods (Apollo) are among us and does good things, but we can’t see them. I can’t describe my love for this musical work in words!
Before you kill me for not sourcing correctly, I can’t find who has translated this from Swedish to English.
____________________________
A God in Disguise
Prelude
This is not for the strong in the world but the weak.
Not for warriors but for peasants, who have
Ploughed their simple plots without complaining
That a God plays on his flute.
This is a Grecian legend…
I
Who breathes an air in season
upon his pipe at dawn
too high for human reason,
born of the heaven-born?
Who makes interpretation,
knows the flute’s hidden word
turned earthly elation
for plant and herd?
Who is it gently leading
his flock afield to graze,
kindly his creatures feeding
with herb and crystal lays?
Who walks amid the meadow
where sultry summer fails,
and sleeps in earth’s shadow
on straw with thralls?
II
Apollo dwells in a Thessalian stable.
There are no laurels round his golden head:
He was sent down from the high god’s Olympian hall,
doomed for a year to earn his daily bread,
a shepherd lives in a Thessalian stable.
The servants know him not in their attire,
far down the board they lay his bowl and spoon.
He shares his bed with cattle in the byre.
No earthly object does he call his own.
A god goes hid in shepherd’s plain attire.
III
Round watchful autumn embers
He gathers the shuddering band,
and binds up the wounded members
with comforting hand.
A home in story fits him,
in song and poem his birth.
Yet plaintiess he acquits him
in duly on earth.
IV
Where gods have passed over will blessing be spread.
What though the cloak cover his golden head,
bare soil blossoms forth in his tread.
He plays in a hollow new-turned by the plougher,
for creatures to follow, for sun and shower,
where Death is deprived of his power.
V
Now blessed be Tessalia’s lord,
within whose courts we toil.
When cock-crow summons him abroad,
he walks on hallowed soil.
For he who dwells with hinds in stall,
whose common fare he shares,
has moon for sister, sun at call,
and walks among the stars.
VI
What woodland is transmuted in radiance,
as wedding-songs are fluted, and creatures dance?
From out what unknown portal took he his way,
who is not as a mortal, nor come to stay?
Does he remember, banished by mead and shore,
a world of music vanished and known no more?
Does he recall the singing, the virgin choir,
the ecstasy outwinging a deathless lyre?
VII
And gods are walking yet upon this earth.
One of them may be sitting by your hearth.
Do not suppose a god can ever die.
He passes you unmarked by your dull eye.
He bears no purple robe, no sceptred rod.
Only his influence reveals the god.
The never-broken rule runs in this wise:
A god who walks on earth walks in disguise.
VIII
Think you at morning hour
sheep-flocks would crop the mound,
that grass-grown earthly bower,
if gods could not be found?
Think you the spring would flower
binding a wreath around
all dead men’s earthly bower,
if gods could not be found?
IX
If a look bid us mingle in quiet Agape
us, dull and coldly single as most men be;
if a hand, all unbidden, like true celestial balm
on soul misery-ridden, should touch our palm;
and if radiance guide us where we tormented trod —
then unrevealed beside us there walks a god.

____________________________
This poem reminds me of Trials of Apollo in some ways. Not only “Apollo is banished from Olympus and has to live as a puny mortal for a while”. But the way Apollo spreads music and learns to care for others.
Also the last lines in A God in Disguise
if a hand, all unbidden, like true celestial balm
on soul misery-ridden, should touch our palm;
and if radiance guide us where we tormented trod —
then unrevealed beside us there walks a god.
and the last lines in Tower of Nero
Any time you take aim and prepare to fire your best shot, any time you seek to put your emotions into a song or poem, know that I am smiling on you. We are friends now. Call on me. I will be there for you.
have similar feels, though worded differently. Both texts wants to tell us that Apollo cares for humanity, which is a message I love.
And guess what?!
I was chosen as one of the narrators for this year’s performance! I’m really happy and it feels like a big honour to do this. I’m going to read the entire poem in front of the audience and hopefully make Apollo proud!☀️

Hjalmar Gullberg, Förklädd Gud/Disguised God (I/IX)
Since people expressed interest in getting more posts about classic Swedish literature, I decided to share Hjalmar Gullberg’s Förklädd Gud, a multi-part poem about Apollo living as a mortal. Beneath the original there’s a translation by John Hearne.
Because the poem is so long, I’m sharing it a little at a time. Each post will also have a link to the music by Lars-Erik Larsson – all in one piece, though. (Would you prefer the same one every time, or a different recording? There are several. Either way, do listen to the music, it’s gorgeous!)
Prolog:
Ej för de starka i världen men för de svaga. Ej för krigare men för bönder som plöjt sin jordlott utan att klaga spelar en gud på flöjt. Det är en grekisk saga...
I.
John Hearne’s translation:
Preface:
Not for the strong in the world but for the feeble. Not for the warlike, but for the humble who till the soil without a grumble a god plays on a flute. It is a Grecian fable.
I.
Who plays upon a pipe as the dawn awakes the land? From heaven comes a message No one may understand. Who put the secret password into the hidden flute? Who plays for the earth, for the flesh and fruit?
Who is that goodly shepherd who leads his flock through here so they may graze in peace, hearing tunes so crystal clear? Who wanders through the meadows in summer’s shining day and sleeps in the shadows on fragrant hay?

Mike Westbrook - Love and Understanding: Citadel/Room 315 Sweden '74 - live performance featuring John Surman, previously unreleased (My Only Desire Records)
The debut performance of esteemed pianist/composer Mike Westbrook's cult 70s jazz masterpiece 'Citadel/Room 315', recorded live in 1974. Featured soloists throughout the album are the iconic ECM recording artist John Surman plus a crack team of top Scandi jazzers. Remastered by Caspar @ Gearbox Records from the original master tapes, 'Love and Understanding' is available on limited edition 2LP gatefold vinyl (500 units worldwide) and 'mini-LP' gatefold CD, with sleeve notes by Daniel Spicer (Jazzwise, The Wire). The original RCA recording of 'Citadel/Room 315' is an hour-long suite of eleven tracks, beautifully composed and arranged by Mike Westbrook that is rightly considered to be one of the high-points of Brit-jazz from that era. Mike was commissioned by Sveriges (Swedish) Radio to write the work with Surman as lead soloist. He then travelled to Sweden to perform and conduct it for the first time, live in concert. This recording has never been released until now and presents a wildly different recording to the later LP, the rawness and freedom of the playing contrasting strongly with the more polished studio album. Surman - playing baritone and soprano saxophone, plus bass clarinet - is in sumptuously freewheeling form throughout, soaring between wild expression and wonderfully controlled playing, perfectly complimenting Mike's compositions that gracefully move from jazz-rock, ballads, to tightly composed orchestral themes and more avant-garde moments. Backed by the 16-piece Swedish Radio Jazz Group led by saxophonist Arne Domnérus and Argentinian trumpeter Americo Bellotto, the group comprised the finest players on the Swedish scene. Personnel: Mike Westbrook (conductor, electric piano) John Surman (baritone and soprano saxes, bass clarinet) The Swedish Radio Jazz Group: Arne Domnérus (alto saxophone, clarinet) Claes Rosendahl (tenor saxophone, flute) Lennart Åberg (tenor and soprano saxophone, flute) Erik Nilsson (baritone saxophone, bass clarinet, flute) Americo Bellotto (trumpet) Bertil Lövgren (trumpet, flugel horn) Jan Allan (trumpet, alto horn) Håkan Nyquist (trumpet, flugel horn, French horn) Lars Olofsson (trombone) Sven Larsson (bass trombone, tuba) Rune Gustafsson (guitar) Bengt Hallberg (piano) Georg Riedel (bass) Stefan Brolund (bass guitar) Egil Johansen (drums) Jan Bandel (drums, vibraphone, percussion)
