Setting the Record Straight on Neurodiversity, 2nd Edition
Last summer, I wrote a blog post that went into detail on the origins of the term and concept of neurodiversity. Since then, more info has been uncovered that dates said blog post so an updated version is in order.
Hereâs the truth, put quite simply-Judy Singer did not coin neurodiversity and most certainly did not originate the idea or concept. This was never true, it just became accepted as truth as time went on. Singer hasn't been able to keep her story straight, and it's because of her ego. This is the kind of ego that the world of academia breeds. It gives people the need to claim ownership over words and concepts, even if it was developed within the community. It allows for individuals with institutional power to hold the cards against people without said power or privilege in progressive movements. This isnât to say everyone who participates in academia is guilty of this, just that academia creates these people by its very design.
Neurological diversity was used as early as October of 1996 on Martijn Dekkerâs InLv (Independent Living on the Autism Spectrum) email list. It was a private list, only accessible to those who participated in it. With permission, he published an email from Tony Langdon where he not only name drops neurological diversity but describes it in the exact way itâs usually defined.Â
âI'm becoming more sure that what allows the human
race to progress socially and technologically is the neurological
diversity of people. I.e., the atypical among a society provide the
different perspectives needed to generate new ideas and advances,
whether they be technological, cultural, artistic or otherwise.â
It was also used in an email from Phil Schwarz dated 1997, an entire year before Singerâs thesis, on a public email list.Â
âThe more we widen societal horizons regarding _neurological_ diversity,
alongside diversity of race, ethnicity, religion, culture, etc., the
easier it will be for folks on the spectrum to integrate into, and
contribute to, the society at large, to whatever degree their skills
and talents render them capable. The more there will be a place and
a role of value in the society at large.â
There are more emails from even further back on this email list that donât outright namedrop neurodiversity, but do use the same basic phrasing short of exact wording such as this one from Stephen Drake. Even then, the concept of neurodiversity isnât very original as it is very derivative of the pre-existing Disability Rights Movement, which was pushing for the same thing. The neurodiversity movement has had a focus on brain-based disabilities since the mainstream Disability Rights Movement often focuses more on physical disabilities.
Harvey Blume (may his memory be a blessing) published two articles on neurodiversity in the late 90s. One that uses âneurological pluralismâ, which is basically a synonym, and then another that does use neurodiversity. This was published before Singerâs thesis, though it was something he wrote based on his discussions with her. The older article looks to have been published independently of said discussions, though. Journalists like Blume play a significant role in the popularization of terms, and he published for Atlantic and NYT, two high profile publications. Therefore, it suffices to say he did a lot to help bring the term and idea into the public eye.Â
There were some claims in the 2000s that Larry Arnold was the one to coin neurodiversity, though Larry himself disputed this. Itâs likely that because he mentioned neurodiversity in his old website that there was a simple misattribution given to him.Â
What really put neurodiversity on the map, at least within autistic spaces, was the aforementioned article that Jane Meyerding wrote. Personal accounts relay that this article was a huge deal and sparked many conversations among autistics and cousins about their own lived experiences. Jane does not take credit for the term, but it is worth noting that this was widely shared and had the term in it. Judyâs thesis didnât get much attention until it was mentioned in another one of her writings published in Disability Discourse, but written before that called "Why Can't You Be Normal for Once in Your Life?". Disability Discourse is cited pretty heavily and mentions the 1998 thesis. A lot of people also seem to get the idea that Judy coined neurodiversity from Steve Silbermanâs NeuroTribes, a NYT Best-seller published in 2015. Re-reading the chapter that talks about this, âIn Autistic Spaceâ, Silberman talks about the neurodiversity movementâs origins on the whole, including the stuff from ANI and even mentions Janeâs essay. It does mention Judy coined neurodiversity, though Silberman may not have had the intel that its usage predates hers. Many other people didnât either so Steve isnât necessarily at fault for this. Steve gave a mostly accurate depiction of neurdoversityâs origins otherwise, so it may just be that people took a snippet from that and repeated it until it became accepted as the definitive truth.Â
Neurodiversity is many things. One thing it is not is something that belongs to a single person. Like with any idea, itâs a constant work in progress. Many different people have defined it in different ways and there really wasnât a single person who coined the term or conceived the idea. It was something collectively devised by a tight-knit community in the late 80s and early 90s. Two or more people are indeed capable of devising the same or similar words to describe the same phenomena independent of one another. The sheer chance that we all happen to live on the same planet in a universe full of them, a planet that happens to be able to support living beings at that, is small enough that the possibility of many separate people coming to the same single conclusion is more likely than not. The most accurate thing to say about neurodiversityâs origins is that it emerged as a concept and a term in the 1990s within communities of autistics and cousins on the internet whose work was influenced by the Disability Rights Movement.
For more perspectives on this, check out a live discussion on this featuring neurodiversity movement veterans from July.

Read the full article

Cindy Hinds in The Brood (David Cronenberg, 1979)
Cast: Oliver Reed, Samantha Eggar, Art Hindle, Henry Beckman, Nuala Fitzgerald, Cindy Hinds, Susan Hogan, Gary McKeehan, Michael Magee, Robert A. Silverman, Joseph Shaw, Larry Solway, Reiner Schwarz. Screenplay: David Cronenberg. Cinematography: Mark Irwin. Art direction: Carol Spier. Film editing: Alan Collins. Music: Howard Shore.Â
Creepy children have become a staple of horror movies ever since Patty McCormack terrorized everyone as Rhoda Penmark in The Bad Seed (Mervyn LeRoy, 1956). The key here is the depiction of evil lurking behind a façade of innocence. Actually, the creepy child in The Brood is not Candice Carveth (Cindy Hinds), an otherwise ordinary 5-year-old, except as a vehicle for bringing out the creepy childlike creatures that are the movie's menace. It's a good, bloody, somewhat queasy film that plays on all sorts of phobias, including our suspicions about psychiatrists, and our tolerance for bodily functions. It proved too much for some of its early critics, including Roger Ebert, who dismissed it as an exploitation film, "reprehensible trash," and a bore. It may be the first, and perhaps the second -- given that one person's trash is another person's genre classic -- but it's certainly not the last. David Cronenberg is an insidious filmmaker, who constantly plays on our nerves without resorting to cheap jump scares. He makes you back off at times: In the scene that made most people feel at least faintly nauseated, I found myself saying, "It's only corn syrup and food coloring." We may also debate whether the film is fair to the psychiatric profession and even if there's a touch of antifeminism, but that means he's left you with something to think about. To dismiss The Brood as exploitative is to overlook the satire with which it's laced.Â

Setting the Record Straight on Neurodiversity
Edit 1/11/24-This version is now outdated. See the 2nd edition here.
Edit 7/13/23-Martijn Dekker has now supplied direct evidence of people using "neurological diversity", which neurodiversity is shortened to, as early as 1996. So now we know for sure Singer did not coin the term, nor did the idea ever belong to a single person.
There has been much upheaval lately over the actions of Judy Singer, who has long been credited as the person to coin the term neurodiversity. Much of the ensuing discourse comes from a place of shock. Many are surprised to see the sudden heel turn sheâs made to the reactionary side of autism politics. As someone who practically knows the Neurodiversity Movementâs history inside and out, I am not surprised by this. It kind of feels like it was a matter of time before people started to learn about Judyâs true nature, quite frankly. Thereâs a lot I want to discuss that is independent of recent happenings. I feel that I really donât need to say much about that, as itâs already been said by many others. The story behind her apology on Twitter, which then led to a post on her LinkedIn that was a rescinding of said apology, is quite peculiar, and the true story behind that is unclear. So anyway, letâs really look at the origins of the term neurodiversity, how itâs actually been defined over the years, and who the actual originators of it are.
First off, even when looking at Judyâs work in the late 90s, itâs clear that she really was never the sole proprietor of neurodiversity, or even close to it. Harvey Blume, a journalist for The Atlantic, also helped popularize the term the same year Judy published her thesis. A journalist is more likely to play a role in popularizing a term than someone writing a paper for a Masters degree. Now thereâs evidence to suggest that they both came up with the word together around 1997 when discussing their involvement with autistic-led email listservs, namely ANI-L and InLv. Multiple people who were actually there back in those days have claimed that neurodiversity was actually used informally on email lists like those before Singer or Blume published it in print. If you want to be hyper specific, Blume actually published it in print first. Without having access to the archives of ANI-L or InLv, it's hard to find direct evidence to confirm or deny these claims. Using the email lists that have been made available for Autistic Archive, there is claim on alt.support.autism, a list which dates back to 1998, that Singer did not coin neurodiversity, but it was rather Larry Arnold. However, there is an email from Larry on AutAdvo, a Yahoo Groups list, that says he didnât but rather Blume did.
A book on WebArchive from 2002 called Contexts: understanding people in their social worlds credits Singer for originating the term. So itâs long been attributed to her as her word, even back when it was a newer term. It feels like a case of chicken-or-the-egg as to whether Singer or Blume came up with it first, though itâs fair to say they both played a role in bringing the word into mainstream. Thatâs not the same as actually coining it, but there is still some truth to their role in the termâs history. Singer specifically was more so a person who rode the fledgling movement and described it in her writing than someone who actually did the on-the-ground work people like Jim Sinclair, Phil Schwarz, Mel Baggs, and Kassiane Asasumasu among others did to really build momentum for it. If anything, those people are the real originators of neurodiversity-not just as a term or concept, but as an actual movement with core principles. Core principles Singer either perpetually has failed to understand or misappropriate.Â
Even when looking back at her thesis from 1998, her misconceptions are clear from the start. She describes neurodiversity as a concept and a movement that only applies to âhigh functioning autistics' ' or people with Aspergerâs syndrome. This isnât true now, and it wasnât true then. Severe/profound autism proponents are using this as a way to âproveâ the neurodiversity movement doesnât care about the autistic people they care about. Jim talks about this in xyr 2005 article âHistory of ANI ''. When Jim, Xenia, and Donna were first creating ANI, they had discussions about who they would open membership to. The article is really long, but this can be found under âDefining membership: Who are âweâ?â. They decided to open membership not only to autistic people who could reliably speak to be understood and were considered âhigh functioningâ, but also to autistic people who were deemed lower functioning, as well as âcousinsâ as Xenia described them. This actually was part of the conflict ANI had with More Abled Autistic People, a parent-run group that they collaborated with when planning MAAPâs 1995 conference. MAAP would not allow autistic people they deemed low functioning into the conference. ANI did not like this and tried to push back against that rule. At least one autistic person who used an AAC device to communicate ended up attending regardless. One of the people involved in the early days of ANI was Cal Montgomery, who mainly used AAC to communicate. He still often does and can speak intermittently, but he also has several co-occuring disabilities and requires constant care. A lot of his work was very important in framing the movement in its early days, with essays published in self-advocacy magazines like A Ragged Edge titled âCritic of the Dawn ''. Mel Baggs is one of the key figures of the neurodiversity movementâs history and sie also required round the clock care. Sie seems to be the one to have coined the term aspie supremacy. There is certainly a point to be made about the contributions of autistic people who are non-speaking or unreliably speaking as well as autistic people with intellectual disabilities not being properly recognized. However, saying that is not the same thing as saying the neurodiversity movement or the concept of neurodiversity does not include them. The truth of the matter is that Judy Singer is a single person, as are all of the other people Iâve mentioned here. To treat her, or for her to act as the sole entity who gets to define neurodiversity, is naive at best.
Judyâs problems extend beyond her definition of neurodiversity. She did some stuff in the 2000s that really showed her hand. She lead an online forum for autistic parents called ASpar (Asperger's Syndrome Parenting). She also ended up writing a blog about them and described them from the pov of their offsprings, supporting the dubious Cassandra Syndrome label. It was basically the inverse of the typical stuff you would hear parents of autistic people say about their kids. She also speculated about how certain historical figures might have been autistic-namely Hitler. You can read more on her archived website here
So where do we go from here? Some have suggested that the word neurodiversity is ruined now that Singer has shown her true colors. I personally donât see it that way. For one, Singer was already like this, it just wasnât apparent to many people. According to a newly published article on The Guardian, Judyâs thesis wasnât given much attention until she was found by Steve Silberman, author of NeuroTribes, and then she was featured in the book, which became a New York Times Best-Seller. It seems like Judyâs importance to the Neurodiversity Movement has over time been exaggerated to the point where she has even been dubbed âthe mother of neurodiversityâ by some. It is common for information to be morphed and the truth exaggerated, especially on the internet. There are many other misconceptions about the neurodiversity movement of all sizes, and Autistic Archive has been an attempt at providing as accurate and nuanced an image as possible. The movementâs history is complicated, and none of its originators are saints or are above criticism. So I donât see this so much as a case of âletâs call this movement something elseâ and most certainly not proof that the movement needs to be scrapped and started over from scratch. History is complicated. It is entirely possible to appreciate the contributions those in the past have made to something and honor them when credit is due, while still recognizing their imperfections and the current shortcomings that persist to this day. It is also important to have an accurate account of said history. Two things can indeed be true.
