This is also why so many places like cafes and bakeries have gone for the "industrial" look lately. It creates a horrible sound environment because the goal is not to be a welcoming place for customers or potential customers, it's to provide the bare minimum so people stay only as long as they need to before leaving as customers that stayā€”even if the place is largely emptyā€”are seen as depriving the place of potential profits.
Customer turnover and how to do it in a sneaky way is an entire part of the industry. Because they can't ban you or give you 15 minutes, but they can make it so you have a hard time hearing things or the limit of what you can tolerate caps out after 15-30 minutes.
Which then leaks into independent places because what do all the Big Name places look like? An unfinished industrial mess primed to give people a headache, so that's what's designed around because it's expected.
"This smart camera is able to collect information about customers in a coffee shop as well as workers, converting their actions to readable data. Fooling a camera from recognizing the form of a human is easy enough, but what happens when they track actions instead?"

please tell us more about the mall au, specifically etho and his pipe bomb, i need an entire thing of him running from the cops (i am your number one fan ignore that i only just found out about you that doesnt matter)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
hey guys. wanna hear about white castle pipe bomb c plot?
this may come as a surprise to some, but etho is a natural at customer service. heā€™s always been a pretty chill guy- it takes a lot to faze him, probably a consequence of his proclivity towards explosives in his early years. that calm exterior translates well to working the front desk of a local electronics repair store (not that he had needed a summer job, really, but doc and beef both went home for the summer, and someone kept leaving him visa-friendly job applications in every nook and cranny of his dorm- he found one in his cereal a few weeks before finals, and even that one had nothing on the one he found folded up in his toothpaste).
that being said, being good at customer service doesnā€™t mean that heā€™s completely immune to the agonies of said customer service. being good at customer service just means that after the eighteenth laptop he has to factory reset while a teenaged boy swears up and down he had not in fact clicked on a link for sexy singles in his area, ethoā€™s able to wait until the boy leaves before attempting to gouge out his other eye.
heā€™s searching for a screwdriver when his phone buzzes with a text, and after a longing look at his toolbox etho flips his sign to closed and heads over to the white castle. he makes a quick stop at the arcade tango mans to set a new high score on the pinball machine, effectively guaranteeing tango will be glued to the pinball machine until he regains the top leaderboard spot, and then continues on his way to the white castle, spirits high.Ā
ethoā€™s good mood abruptly vanishes after stepping into the white castle, as bdubs has apparently deemed ethoā€™s delay in arrival unforgivable and is now withholding the free fries etho had been promised.
etho slumps himself over the front counter, not unlike a wet cat, and starts causing a scene, whining about his awful day full of idiot teens and potential self mutilation that can only be staved off with free food. bdubs staunchly ignores him and cleo threatens to pour hot oil on his head.
eventually actual paying customers come in and ethoā€™s continued presence becomes a problem, so bdubs heaves a sigh and offers the fries to etho as long as he pays full price for them, to which etho, an extreme couponer, reacts appropriately.
ethoā€™s eye narrows as he peels himself off of the front counter, demanding the fries free of charge. bdubs refuses. cleo smacks bdubs on the back of the head and tells him to just give etho the fries so he'll go away.
etho gives bdubs one last chance to give him the fries for free, and by the time bdubs physically removes him from the premises etho is already plotting his revenge and heading straight back to the art store to collect a favor.
(you see, somewhere between the fifth and eighth laptop etho had to factory reset, tango texted him that he managed to jailbreak the pinball machine to accept a quarter for unlimited plays, and etho abandoned his job immediately to take advantage of the incredible deal.Ā Ā
that was his intention, anyway. but what happened is this: etho had never really shaken off the hold explosives have over him. after heā€™d been put on a five different government watchlists by the time he was seventeen heā€™d taken a step back and started focusing more on computing and getting into college and other projects that were less likely to necessitate seizure by the canadian government. heā€™s clean. he left that life behind him.
however.Ā
when the sound of an explosion comes from the cute little art shop as etho walks past, thereā€™s not a second of hesitation before he swung the front doors open and entered the shop.
it hadnā€™t taken him long to locate the source of the explosion, following a trail of smoke down a half hidden flight of stairs to a door with a hastily scrawled sign on it reading 'SUPER TALL AND HANDSOME EMPLOYEES ONLY.ā€™
etho opened the door, walking into what has to be the worldā€™s most pathetic meth lab. in the corner there was a stack of cardboard boxes labeled NOT DRUGS/DEFINITELY LEGAL SUBSTANCES. beakers filled with unidentifiable substances were bubbling over onto the table. a laptop near ethoļæ½ļæ½s foot displayed results for a google search of ā€˜how to tell if a cut needs stitches and also how long can you set yourself on fire without going to hospital.ā€™
ā€œTHIS ISNā€™T WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE.ā€ a man who etho vaguely recognized from grian's beginning of summer introductions had shouted, throwing his body over the contents of the table in a desperate attempt to hide the beakers from view. a few shattered under his weight and etho heard him stifle a whimper. ā€œeverything here is perfectly normal and also legal.ā€
breaking bad played quietly from a tv somewhere in the background.
etho raised an eyebrow.)
in the end, they manage to work out a deal: etho would not call the cops or tell anyone about joel's secret little operation and in return, joel owed etho a favor.
and now etho will cash that favor in.
(ā€œso let me get this straight. youā€™re pissed your friend wouldnā€™t give you chips for free and your first instinct is to go to a meth lab and steal my meth supplies to get back at him.ā€
ā€œfailed meth lab. and yup.ā€
ā€œthereā€™s something wrong with you.ā€
ā€œat least i know how to make meth.ā€
ā€œwait, you what.ā€)
they start small. prank calls, anonymous yelp reviews calling the really loud cashier short, launching fireworks through the drive-thru window. it doesnā€™t take long for them to get bored with that though, which leads to bdubs walking into the white castle one morning to discover a horse standing in the middle of the lobby.Ā
the horse seems very at peace with the situation, wandering over to chew on bdubā€™s hair as he sputters and cleo ignores the situation entirely. bdubs is left with the task of removing the horse from the store, except the horse seems to be taller than the doorway and not particularly interested in leaving, so eventually bdubs is forced to give up. Thereā€™s just a horse in their lobby now.Ā
it doesnā€™t take bdubs very long to become attached to the horse, much to the detriment of cleo. sheā€™s running the white castle single handedly by the end of the second day, serving customers and manning the kitchen while bdubs whispers sweet nothings to the horse in the makeshift horse stall he made in the womenā€™s restroom.Ā
itā€™s pointless to try and reason with bdubs, so cleo makes her way over to the art store basement where joel and etho have set up their base of operations. ignoring the now functioning meth lab, she demands the horse be removed from the premises in exchange for a reasonable one free small fry per week.Ā
reasonable to cleo, and least. both jeol and etho scoff at her offer and demand at least one large fry per day each, to which cleo laughs in their faces. she doesnā€™t bother making a counter offer, simply turning on her heel and walking out of the basement. she pauses for a moment at the front of the shop to make sure she hadnā€™t been followed before grabbing her lighter from her pocket, casually flicking it on and taking a step towards the tissue paper.
by the time joel and etho notice something is amiss the fire department has arrived, and theyā€™re barely able to hide the evidence of their operation before firefighters are breaking down the door, carrying them out through the art shop, entirely engulfed in flames.Ā
(ā€œso in retrospect, ripping all the smoke detectors out of the ceiling probably wasnā€™t a great idea on your part.ā€
ā€œhow was i to know i was gonna get into a war with an arsonist, all i wanted to do was mind my own business and make meth!ā€
ā€œfail at making meth.ā€
ā€œshut up.ā€)
now relocated behind the counter at ethoā€™s repair shop, joel and etho prepare their final attack.
the plan is simple: using supplies salvaged from the meth lab, etho will construct a smoke bomb and throw it through the white castle drive through window while joel takes advantage of the distraction and steals all the fries the white castle possesses.
making the smoke bomb is a piece of cake, and when joel isn't looking etho sneaks a few of his own more... volatile substances into his backpack. just in case.
joel enters the white castle and cleo immediately clocks him due to joel being the most suspicious person alive always, but she cannot be arsed to investigate. itā€™s been a long fucking week. joel knows what will happen if he messes with her.
bdubs, however, feels an impending sense of doom through his Etho Senses and rushes over to the drive-thru window and whips it open, immediately screaming at the sight of etho across the road winding up his arm with a smoke bomb in his hand.
and thatā€™s when things really start to go wrong.
because hereā€™s the thing: ethoā€™s been missing an eye for most of his life. he knows his depth perception is shit. but heā€™s so caught up in the adrenaline of the moment, and bdubs screaming isnā€™t exactly helping him focus, and listen the baseball scene in canada isnā€™t exactly thriving-
all of this is to say that etho activates the smoke bomb, winds up, and promptly chucks it five feet to the left of the drive through window. it bounces off the side of the building and rolls to a stop against the tire of the car that had been pulling up to order.
several things happen in very quick succession:
1. the smoke bomb begins pouring out smoke, completely obscuring etho from view and flooding into the white castle
2. bdubs attempts to continue screaming but immediately regrets it as copious amounts of smoke invade his lungs
3. the car which had previously been pulling up to the drive through attempts to exit the scene as quickly as possible, but due to the aforementioned copious amounts of smoke misjudges where the road turns and makes a hard left directly into the wall of the white castle
the very same wall where bdubs had leashed his horse mere minutes before, and the very same wall joel had been creeping along.
the horse and joel are immediately flattened, and upon seeing this bdubsā€™ impassioned screaming reaches pitches previously unknown to man, and all hell breaks loose.
cleo starts cackling and arms herself with a makeshift flamethrower thrown together with hairspray and a personalized lighter. bdubs attempts to leap out of the drive-thu window but his foot gets stuck and he falls out of the building, crumpling to the ground in a still screaming heap before scrambling back up through the drive-thru window and into the fray. joel manages to claw his way out of the rubble, finds himself face to face with cleo and her flamethrower, and has half a second to regret the his and hers shrek mugs that trapped him in this stupid country before heā€™s running for his life.Ā
etho himself ends up sitting peacefully on the bench outside the white castle entrance, his mask helpfully filtering out most of the smoke. itā€™s lucky he grabbed some extra materials from joelā€™s lab really, he knew bdubs wouldnā€™t hand over the fries without a fight.Ā
heā€™s in the middle of assembling a device thatā€™ll definitely get him put on the american governmentā€™s watchlist and ignoring the screams coming from inside when two men rush past him into the white castle, shouting something about justice and burgers. etho waits for a second, and almost immediately they come rushing back out. he waves at their retreating figures, one of whom heā€™s pretty sure is the theater kid that tried to put on a one man show of macbeth during welcome week.
etho wraps the fuse around his pipe bomb and stands up, brushing the debris off of his pants and strolling into the fray.
he finds bdubs almost immediately, the man standing on the counter and clearly audible even over the fire alarms and incessant swearing from joel and cleo, who now both have improvised flamethrowers and are duking it out in the kids play area. despite the smoke bduds and etho lock eyes instantly, bdubs paling a few shades when he sees what etho has in his hand.
bdubs jumps off the counter and attempts to run to etho, but is cut off by an entirely engulfed in flames joel. it seems that bdubs did not learn a single lesson about the flammability of his hair product from his run in with grian at the beginning of the summer, because his hair bursts into flames after the slightest brush from joel, and this time cleo isnā€™t standing nearby with a fire extinguisher.
it should be noted that most of the white castle is entirely engulfed in flames at this point. ethoā€™s at the center of it all, cradling his pipe bomb like a baby and searching furiously for his promised free french fries.Ā
heā€™s stopped by cleo who meets his eyes, smiles wide, and lights the pipe bomb fuse.Ā
-
etho and cleo stare at the wreckage of the white castle. look at each other. look back at the rubble.
the sirens in the distance are distinctly closer now, and both etho and cleo abruptly realize how much evidence is contained on their person.Ā
ā€œjoelā€™s probably fine.ā€ cleo says. ā€œi saw him run into the walk in freezer after i burnt away the last of his clothes and hair.ā€
etho nods. ā€œbdubs is too short to get crushed by rubble.ā€
cleo hums agreement. they stand side by side for a moment longer before cleo turns to etho.
ā€œwell, i wonā€™t tell if you wonā€™t.ā€
with that she turns on her heel and walks away. etho sticks around for a few more minutes, watching the flames die down and the last of the white castle crumble. he digs around in his pocket for a moment and pulls out a blackened handful of fries, yanking his mask down to shove them in his mouth as emergency services skid into the parking lot.Ā
sticking around turns out to be a mistake, etho quickly realizes, as his white hair reflects the light from the police cars and catches the attention of every officer there. he takes off at a sprint, pulling his mask back up and booking it straight into moving traffic, dodging cars and leaving the yells of the police officers and the rubble behind him.
and thatā€™s the last anyone sees of etho that summer.

"I'm so glad we're done with exams." He sighed, sitting down and rolling his shoudlers, before rubbing his neck and eying the food, then deciding to order another round.
"Mhmm... I was so glad to close all the tabs today. My laptop practically thanked me." Smiling, she leaned forward on her elbows, "Is this why we're having an expensive meal?"
Her words held no real malice, but an air of unease, she never liked how he'd casually spend like this, especially on her, she had done nothing to deserve this, and the constant reminder of how he'd always pay whenever it was pricey would nip at her self pride.
He paused to look at her before pouting, "No, I just wanted to treat my girl." Mumbling he moved the tray towards her, gesturing for her to start first, trying to ignore her lingering gaze, the eerie nostalgia setting in, he knew what she'd get like during exam season, extremely cynical and skeptical, to be honest he was no different- but they were finally free and perhaps he just wanted to enjoy a nice meal with her, no hidden intentions or ulterior motives, nothing to think about but each other.
"Then let's go dutch-"
"Not a chance." His abrupt words cut her off, for a split second his tone reverted back to the one she was used to, the tone he'd use back in the day, to snub her or out do her while answering, this tone was often accompanied by a scoff, the only gesture that would mildly indicate that this was but a fun little game, though she knew when the tone was all that would surface, he'd be serious, in no mood for negotiation. Fortunately,Ā  he had barely ever used it with her, often in times of forcing her to do something good for herself, like to rest or to eat, but she'd seen him use the same tone with a few people, who were once her friends, he didn't know she was there, standing behind the wall, listening to him call out her so called friends, people who'd just use her for her work, leeching off her academics, knowing she'd be too tired to even argue or say no, or even too guilty when one of them would bring up how smart she was and that made her arrogant- she heard him that day, the crisp morning air wasn't as cold as his words,
"Your incompetence is a curse you should bear on your own. Don't drag others down in that pitiful hole of yours, especially her."
That day she had lost an entire circle of friends, at a point she wondered if it was even worth it, wondered why he even said that when a class ago he had called her 'a silly little girl' for arguing about what a Freudian slip was when she was clearly wrong, now here he was defending her honour? On the same day he had come to her, sitting next to her in the library and slipping her a coupon, initially she had thought he was insulting her- a typical bourgeoisie move, only to realise it was a coupon for a couple's meal, noticing him side eying her to read her expressions. She had turned to him, pointing at the coupon, herself and then him, and as wordlessly as she had spoken, he too nodded, pointing at himself, her and then the coupon. Something had begun to blossom between the two that day, a relationship both were too afraid to talk about, perhaps because of their on going rivalry since the beginning of their academic year, or the way they'd ignore each other until one would bother the other, or perhaps the fear of being questioned by the lingering gazes around the hallways,Ā  the whispers the wind carried around the campus- wanting not to be part of the gust of wind, choosing to keep whatever this was hidden, a secret shared by just the two.
"I mean...I'd prefer you don't, I wanted to treat you," his argument coming out softer, as he nodded to the waiter who had entered the private section after knocking, to place another tray in front of them, "Just us and a nice meal...I haven't spent enough time with you....that's why." Clearing his throat , he avoided the way she studied him, eyes scanning each feature, every gesture, every breath he'd take, to be able to study his next more, to prepare herself. Truth be told he hated it when she'd do that, this was the first thing that irked him about her, and although he had always been gentle natured, this trait of hers would always have his ulterior ego surface, ready to claw her. It took him some time to realise that was just the face she'd make while thinking, not only at him but everyone, including her exam sheet. That did not mean that being together made it any easy for him, in fact, now he'd feel small when she'd look at him like that, he'd feel as if his sincerity was being questioned, it made him dislike himself, was he not clear enough? Was the choice of words not point to point? Maybe his tone was ooff-
"Oh...well you're right, I guess I am to blame for that, I kind of mentally blocked you out." Mumbling sheepishly she reached across the table to hold his hand, her the tips of her fingers caressing the back of his hand, noting how he visibly relaxed, "In my defense there's this annoying guy in class who thinks he's so smart-"
"Thinks?" With a scoff he laced their fingers together, leaning closer to the table to eye her, his frown morphing into his signature dimpled smile at the sound of her laughter, before he continued, adding onto the playful banter, "Last time I checked this guy beat you in the Moral Philosophy 101 quiz and assignment."
Shrugging in response she grabbed the chopsticks with her free hand, "Beginners luck. Also consequentialism sucks, you're just a utilitarian at heart, that's why you got lucky." With that verdict she began eating, earning a cackle in return, the atmosphere around them calming down once more, allowing her to relax, much to his pleasure. He had begged her to go out with him last week too, claiming that they were left with just one exam so they could relax a bit, though she had threatened to block him if he kept pestering her, which is why he had stopped spam texting her.
However, finally tonight, now that they were free he had earned the right to become her Sannie again, to roll around on her bed, messing with the sheets while she would be scrolling on her phone trying to ignore how his antics were toppling off her plushies to the floor. He'd be able to whine and complain when she'd wake him up early because the 'cafeteria is serving Yaki Udon',
"Go, they let you sneak some to your dorm, sneak some here"
"It's...6 am...let's just eat something else."
"If I had the rich boy privellage,Ā  I'd go myself, but alas-"
"Are you really guilt tripping me for being rich?"
"No, my sweet nepo-baby I'm stating a mere fact."
"A nepo-baby would be a business major like his father, not a communication major-"
"And that's why you're my favourite boy, Sannie."
That day he got her four bowls of udon, even sneaking in the dessert Wooyoung had gotten for himself, and when asked he told Wooyoung he had eaten it, never mentioning her.
That was another issue, he had to keep his relationship a secret from his friends too, initially it was fun, the thrill and excitement would have him shivering with glee, but recently, after most of his friends now had a significant other whom they would publicly walk around with or show affection to, he had begun to wonder if she'd ever want that with him. Or were they just college sweethearts, soon to be forgotten, a bitter sweet memory plastered at the back of their minds, one to return to when times would get rough.
"What's wrong?"
Her question cutting off his thought process only for him to realise how he had just been staring at his food, while she was half way done. Clearing his throat he gave her a gentle smile, shaking his head before reaching for the soda, pouring both of them a glass. Maybe some other time, he'd ask her some other time, right now he could see how she was enjoying herself, he could see how comfortable she was with him, he had no real intentions of ruining the moment.
"Are you sure? You're making the same face you did, when you had to present last semester." Just like that he had lost all the love he had for her, no, he was dating a monster, a demon in the skin of an angel, the human embodiment of Godzilla. Eyes narrowing at her direction he scoffed, leaning back to take off his jacket, before responding with a taunt, "Says the person who forgot the meaning of utility while presenting".
With a gasp she placed her hand on her heart,Ā  staring at him in faux shock, "You fiend, that's because I'm a Kant girlie at heart."
"So...you don't think the ends justify the means?" He asked cautiously, though not of her feelings, but of the risk of his own fragile heart, too afraid to let it slip out of her grasp and shatter.
"The ends, never justify the means, Sannie."Ā  She smiled, staring at him only for it to drop when she noticed him frown at his plate, slowly nodding as he looked up at her, "Yeah...I guess..."
"What's...wrong, something has been bothering you since we came here." She sighed pushing her plate aside, watching him take out his buzzing phone, choosing to stare at the phone rather than him.
"Nothing."
His blunt response nipping at her insecurities, what did she do? Should she not have said that? Did she offend him? Was he going to leave her now? They were in their final year anyway, the time spent together was supposed to come to an end and as much as she wanted to cling onto the false hope of him somehow spending the rest of his life together with her, she knew that was but a wish, reality was far too bitter, far too grim, leaving the two to wonder when they'd become a distant memory.
"Okay."
There it was, his eyes flickered up to scan her face, that defeated look she'd hold when she'd give up, why would she never fight for him? Why didn't she pester him to finish his statement, why didn't she cling onto him, pulling him closer even though he knew he'd run to her at any given moment, he was only waiting for the signal, waiting for her to say the word. Maybe Wooyoung was right, this was just a fun arrangement for the two, a temporary one, which is why Hongjoong had asked him to confront her, but he didn't want to, yet, here he was by choosing to not confront her he had somehow made it worse.
Visibly flinching under his glare she averted her gaze, clearing her throat, playing with her fingers as she stared at her lap aimlessly, so what now?
"What about us?" His words a gentle whisper as he put his phone on the table beside his plate, hunching forward to get a better look at her face, "Does our end justify our means?"
Her head snapped up in his direction, the burning sensation of the flood of tears at the brink of falling, she could feel the fat droplets clinging to her lower lashes, chewing on her lower lip as she tried to compose herself, "Which end...Sannie, the one where we say goodbye?"
His frown only deepened at her question, taking in her shaking form, pinching himself as he tried ro remain rooted to his spot. Seonghwa had told him to listen to her, to comfort and console her because women need time to process and cope, especially someone like her, but then Hongjoong's persistent 'What if she really is with you for the ride',Ā  kept bothering him, what if he were right, but at the back of his mind, this little voice was yelling at him, telling him how that was not true, how he'd seen her take care of him, how he'd felt her love for him; from when she'd slip in her extra notes in his bag for him to study to when she'd slip in a few packets of mint oreo in his bag as a treat. He knew they were more than just a fling, or at least he would like to believe that.
"Do you ... want us to?" His words as soft as the first time he had confessed to her, making her feel even more nauseous than before, though with a gulp she held it back before shaking her head and mumbling a, "No...do you?"
Shaking his head, much like her he sighed before staring aimlessly at her, "Then...why won't you fight for me?" This was less of a question, but more of a whine, a plea, one that had her finally snap.
Her sniff having him focus on her, watching her bring up her hands to cover her face, as she hunched over, making sure he couldn't see her cry, a trait that bothered him, he'd barely ever see her breakdown, even during the stressful exam season, she'd lock herself in the washroom and let it out, while he'd either wait outside the washroom (if he was lucky enough for her to let him into her dormroom) or like most exam seasons he'd be at his own dorm, trying to call her or text her.
"Why can't our end be happy?" He mumbled, finally choosing to get up andĀ  walk around the table and to her, glad he had reserved a closed off private section. Sighing he reached for her, gently gripping her wrists as he pulled her hands off her face, ignoring her whines and protest, "Tell me, why do you think we can't have a happy end?" Pulling her up to wrap his arms around her, letting her fist his shirt, soaking it with her tears, sobbing out a, "Because our means of doing so aren't good."
Pulling her back he stared at her, gripping her shoulders, "What do you mean? Do you not want to keep it a secret anymore?"
"I never wanted to keep it a secret, at least I dont want to anymore." She mumbled trying to hide in his embrace once more but he pulled her back again, much to her disappointment as he tried to read her, "I just thought...your image and...I...maybe you didn't want to tell anyone."
By now he had sat her back down leaning against the table as he looked at her, holding onto her hand, his thumbs caressing the back of her hand, listening to her, raising his eyebrows, "No..." he sighed before gently smiling at her, "I've been dropping hints for a while now. My last hint was what led the guys to pick up on the fact that we are together."
So his friends knew?
"Do they think I'm weird?" She whispered, trying to pull away her hand but he held onto her tighter, shaking his head and letting out a laugh, "If anything they thought I tricked you into dating me...Wooyoung didn't even believe me until he saw our pictures." He smiled at her, the memory of his friends accusing him for lying, making it even funnier, "Yeosang said he could tell you're into dumb guys."
"Well, you are dumb. There's no doubt about that." She mumbled, standing up and moving closer, so she was standing between his legs. Cupping his face, she smiled when he glared at her. The eerie sensation that was once slithering in her veins long gone, "I don't remember a single hint, though."
"How?" He whined, pouting at her, leaning into her touch, closing his eyes as he basked in the attention,Ā  the same attention he knew he would recieve publically from now on, there would be nothing holding them back, not her toxic friends, those who stared or whispered, in fact his friends would just support them, perhaps she needed such a support system too, would be good for her, "Yesterday after the exam I called you out, I said see you tomorrow babe."
"Thought that was a Freudian slip."
"Oh, so now you know what a Freudian slip is?" His eyes snapped open, brows furrowing at her smug expression, hissing when she squeezed his cheeks together, only to pull back when he wrapped his arms around her, squeezing her tight until she was wheezing out apologies. Giving him a proper hug once he eased down on her, she sighed, pressing her forehead against his,"I really do like you, Sannie."
"I like you too." He smiled, feeling her brush her lips against his, whispering against her lips, only his next statement had him feeling her stiffen and possibly struggle against him but he held her tight, not wanting to be smacked, "They updated the marksheet, I scored higher than you in Moral Philosophy....again...sorry babe." Followed by his boisterous laughter and her whining to let him go, greatly ruining the moment.

02/09/24 - New Post!
So good news! My glasses arrived, and they are amazing, and I am in love with both the regular glasses and the sunglasses. They didn't come with hard cases, but! Walmart Optometry was having a 75% off sale on hard cases so I picked up two for me, two for the glasses I plan on getting my daughter as soon as we get her an updated prescription and one for my mom's reading glasses for $14. I may go back and get the Pride cleaning cloths for Lena since she got rainbow and Pride cases. They're going to be, like, $2.
I also got denture supplies for my mom since she said it looks like she'll get her full and partial dentures when her teeth are pulled on the 26th, so she has the stuff on hand to clean them and to keep them secure so food particles don't get stuck underneath.
I would love to come up with $225 to get Lena an eye exam and the glasses she wants from Zeeolol (I have a 25% coupon to use with it...the exam will be $60 - $80 at Walmart, though). One is bisexual pride flag colors, the other is trans pride flag colors, and her current glasses are pre-quarantine, so she needs a new scrip badly. A friend may be able to help me with this later in the month, but if I can get the exam done this week that would be fantastic.
I also need $150 to pay a bill that is overdue and a bill that is due today. The $400 tied up with the loan company plus anything over the $350 I'm trying to get now will go towards keeping the room until March 2nd. Please help and/or reblog if you can. Thank you!
$1044/$1600
(I just got a donation through GoFundMe while I was waiting to get on my laptop...I'll get the money in a few days and it will go to paying off another sorely overdue bill, plus laundry if I get it by Monday)

taskmaster au? could be gen fic or any pairing
amazing. your mind.
okay, i think this one is crying out for leverage. new leverage because i refuse to include nate:
eliot is the host.
the most chaotic challenge of the season is "cook a steak without entering the kitchen."
harry attempts to rig up arm extensions out of broomsticks. he can't even get the steak into a pan.
breanna tries to overheat a laptop enough to get some kind of sear on the outside of the steak but unfortunately, she'd already upgraded all the computers on set to run super-efficiently as a favor to the crew and she can't even get the laptops to warm. she winds up researching the history of steak tartare and the semantics of the word "cook," elaborately plating the meat raw on a soap dish.
sophie convinces one of the lighting technicians to cook her steak for her. she stands just outside the doorway, calling out instructions. however, her charisma makes him visibly nervous and he accidentally drops the steak in the trash.
parker steals a camera guy's lighter to rig up a blowtorch in the garage. she's halfway through a really nice crust when she gets bored and somehow manages to explode the steak.
hardison hacks the smart thermostat and uses it to order delivery from a nearby steakhouse. "you did not cook the steak," eliot growls. "i caused the steak to be cooked," hardison replies with a grin. he and sophie high five.
eliot is outraged to realize that technically, parker came the closest, in that she did successfully apply heat to the meat in such a way as to alter the protein structure. "this is," says eliot in a low voice, "the single worst way anybody's cooked a steak since the invention of fire." "that's my girl!" says hardison.
there was a grill outside
there was a grill outside
the next episode, the contestants are charged with bringing in "something surprising" as a prize. hardison's contribution is a coupon for a dinner for two with eliot at the nicest restaurant in town. "he'd be good company if he wasn't so hangry," hardison explains. it's got eliot's signature at the bottom. eliot did not sign it.
parker's contribution is a coupon for a dinner for three with eliot at the nicest restaurant in town.
yeah, she just stole hardison's and added another spot for a name.
"surprised?" says parker. "that's one goddamn word for it," says eliot.
now parker and hardison are playing to win.

SuperPhantom - White Crow
Posting this now because I'm not sure I'll ever finish it.
Feel free to contribute.
White Crow SuperPhantom
(965 words)
--+--
Dean answered his ringing flip phone. And NO Sam, he doesn't need a smart phone. The battery on this thing lasts 5 days and it survives being in Dean's pocket when he's thrown against a wall by the bad guy of the week.
"Hi Bobby. Whatcha got for us?"
"I hope you've got gas in the take because this one is going to be a bit of a chase." Bobby opened. "I've got reports coming in from all over about a white crow being linked to dozens of deaths. None of the hunters who've looked into it so far have been able to track the creature or find any connections between the victims. The issue is that some of the crimes aren't fresh. The last victim, a Tim Stillion, had been dead for weeks. Can't figure out the cause because the animals had been at his body. And unless this bird can teleport, he was on the other side the country when Stillion was kill't."
Sam, who was already clickity clacking on his laptop, spoke up. "It sounds like the crow isn't a portent of death then, but just a reporter. But how is it finding the bodies?"
"Yeah," Bobby drawled "I figured you'd come to that conclusion. That's why I called you boys. Every other hunter is out here trying to end this bird when it's solved more cold cases then all of them combined. Bunch of idgits."
Dean grabbed his jacket from the back of his chair and started towards the garage. "So where are we headed Bobby? Any word on the last sighting?"
"Last couple time it was seen, it was around central Illinois."
"Let's roll"
-=-=-=-=-
Sam Manson revved her vespa and continued chasing the white crow down ST-54. They'd been at this for weeks now. And despite it all, Sam was just happy that she'd found Danny at all.
/three weeks ago/
"There's no way!" leopard print blouse said. "You look like one of my son's friends."
Danny had a tendency to drop whatever he was holding if he got summoned but for once, he kept hold of his cell phone. So when he ended up disappearing in the middle of a Doom speed run, Tucker was able to track him down. And after a few minutes (and way too few reasonable security measures) Sam and Tucker were able to watch a live stream from a web connected Nanny cam.
The room was all white, leather couches pushed back against the walls. Marble and brass coffee table set with white taper candles. Starbucks cups sitting on the ledge of the kitchen counter. And in the middle of the room, Phantom. Desperately trying to convince 6 PTA, HOA, Basic Witches that he was indeed the Ghost King that they were trying to summon.
A woman in a white gauze blouse and white wash jeans stepped forward. It must be her house, because she matched the decor. "How did you highjack the summoning?!" It was the same tone every teen has heard from their parents. The tone that said they'd already decided what had happened and were just waiting for you to admit fault.
"Hey, you summoned me. What did you even want, anyway? Pumpkin spice to be available year round? For the grocery store to accept your expired coupons? How about-"
"Now you listen to me young man," A third woman, dressed in sunny yellow and a high pony tail that did nothing to help her look younger. "You need to learn manners and your parents clearly didn't care to teach you"
("Ouch" danny mumbled, "accurate, but ouch" )
Yellow started chanting and the others quickly caught on and joined in. Danny, realizing that he was running out of time to gas light, gatekeep, or girlboss his way out of a solution, tried the old reliable Plan Z. Run away.
So he turned ghostly tail to the nearest window and - BONK! - was stopped by the shielding on the summoning circle. Which was a first. People usually forgot about that. Danny was now both impressed and worried as be felt both pressure and dread building around him as the chanting volume and speed.
Danny clutched his head as the pressure grew to a screeching point until everything released with a pop. The pressure was gone. The chanting was gone. Danny felt lighter, which was saying something given how gravity was typically just a suggestion while he was in ghost mode. Opening his eyes -and when had he closed them? - he noticed one more difference. Everyone had gotten bigger. And the furniture had gotten bigger. And the room had gottenā€¦. uh oh. He had gotten smaller.
Danny was trying to orient himself and identify where an deep thudding was coming from when he was hit from the side. Foot steps. That's what the thudding was. They were just drastically louder when he was only tall enough to stare people in the shins. And the sidelong assault? A broom. Which connected a second time before he thought to go intangible. (Why did he always forget intangibility?)
The woman in white had gotten a broom and was swatting him towards the open patio door, her strappy white sandals stopping behind him and he frantically tried to coordinate his limbs in that same direction. His limbs did not want to coordinate but he eventually got himself out the door and the broom stopped swatting at him.
Once he cleared the threshold, the door rolled closed with a slam and the lock snicked shut.
"And don't come back unless you've learned respect!" was shouted at him from a nearby window before it, too was slammed shut.
======================================
Looking back into the house, he was met by his own reflection in the sliding glass door.
"SQUAAAAAAK!"
In which Danny and Sam are traveling the US 90's road trip style to absorb the ecto of recent (or semi-recent) murders so Danny can get enough power to break the spell and transform back.
The general hunter community is chasing a white crow and a witch to stop them from committing all these murders.
And Sam and Dean and Bobby are trying to just figure out what's going on.

Thereā€™s no grounds, Jawbone!
On Wednesday afternoon, three days before spring break, The Bad Kids receive their late report cards and open them together. That Friday, they are marched through a door, expecting to die.
The POV of various parents and teachers of The Bad Kids, during the days leading up to the Last Standard Exam.
Chapter 2: Denial (read chapter one on ao3 at rellsingsovern!)
Riz came home exactly when he said he would, which immediately tipped Sklonda off to the fact that something was amiss.
It was late for the town of Elmville, which meant that her night was just getting started. Who says 9:52 pm on a Wednesday night can't be the perfect time to start reviewing her court footage? Sheā€™s 20 seconds into the video and three minutes into hitting the refresh button over and over again (curse the Strongtower wifi) when the sound of a motorcycle grumbling up to the building down below blended into the whine of the single fluorescent bulb up in the ceiling of the living room (curse the Strongtower electricity). Her ear flicked of its own accord a few minutes later, registering no footsteps approaching, as to be expected of her rouge son, but picking up the rustling of papers coming from the hallway through the thin walls.
She frowned absentmindedly. Ever since her and Riz had had that talk in November sheā€™d done her best to pay more attention to his habits and tendencies regarding his fucking insane schedule. Much like one of his boards, he kept all his belongings in an ordered chaos she doubted even Pok would have been able to wrap his head around. Sticky notes on papers, papers in folders, folders in binders, highlighters and rubber bands and paper clips in every color made their way from his backpack to his briefcase to his backpack again, leaving Riz his hands free, an intentional move on his part. Wouldnā€™t be a very good rouge if I couldnā€™t draw my gun because Iā€™ve got someoneā€™s homework in my hands, heā€™d quipped to her early in the year, before the bags under his eyes became darker than a bruise and his eyes twitched as much as they blinked, before Fabian started throwing parties Riz for some reason still went to and before Kristen roped him into-
The sound of a pin in the lock snapped her out of her own head and back into her apartment. The part of her that was Sklonda Gukgak: Mom of Riz noticed Riz stumbled through the door lacking his usual grace, most likely due to the backpack that had been progressively more and stuffed full of school supplies ever since Falinell (it made her wonder why he didnā€™t open his briefcase as often anymore). The part of her that was still Chief Detective Sklonda Gukgak of the Elmville Police Department noticed that in Rizā€™s hands were his lockpick that he used to enter the apartment and a pile of envelopes and coupon papers that was certainly their mail, bills and coupons and more bills and a dark red envelope with the official stamp of Aguefort Adventuring Academy on it.
And more bills. Great.
Her ear flicked again, and she absent-mindedly thumbed the arrow keys on her crystal laptop, the ones she knew didnā€™t work anymore, taking in her teenage son who was home before 10 for the first time in a while. ā€œHey sweetie,ā€ she greeted, eyeing the papers in his hands. She always got the mail, on account of Riz just straight up Misty Stepping into the apartment in a rush between school and his office and school again. ā€œIā€™m glad to see you, you hungry or anything?ā€
Riz stepped through the door, closing it behind him, looking down through the lenses of his glasses. ā€œIā€™m fine, thanks mom. Jawbone ordered Bastion Market.ā€
She hummed, thinking of the two most recent text messages in her crystal.
3:06 pm
hi mom just finished yearbook club heading to mordred then stand-up night then home around 10 getting rides from fabian love you
4:48 pm
Hey Sklonda Jawbone here, Riz mentioned something about an event he was supposed to attend tonight but heā€™s decided to stay here for dinner instead, perfectly all right with myself Sandy and Lydia but just wanted to update ya in case you go looking. Heā€™s not taking the grading news too well. Iā€™m sure heā€™s told you about it but just a heads up. Working on a solution for the kids in the morning, yall hang tight šŸ‘
Riz had, in fact, not told her about ā€˜itā€™ yet. Sklonda had had half a mind to call Sandra-lynn to see what Jawbone had meant, but decided to wait until Riz got home, although she had expected to see him way later, if not the next morning. She eyed the red envelope he still held in between his fingers, flicking the lockpick with a small thwack thwack thwack on the seal and wondered if that was ā€˜itā€™.
ā€œThanks for getting the mail, kiddo.ā€ She knows he knows what sheā€™s actually saying. You never get the mail, thatā€™s my job, youā€™re home early, what are you doing?
Whatā€™s wrong?
He shrugged his seemingly 50 pound backpack off his 90 pound body, putting it on the floor but not taking his eyes off it. ā€œJust thought Iā€™d get it on the way up.ā€ His voice says, steady and even-toned.
Former Chief Detective Sklonda Gukgak sees his body language say please donā€™t question me further.
Hah, Mom Sklonda Gukgak thought to herself. Not a chance in hell.
ā€œYā€™know,ā€ she said, closing her laptop and pretending not to notice the way her sonā€™s shoulders rose to his ears immediately. ā€œWhenever you give me a time youā€™ll be home by, youā€™re never actually home at that time. And I know youā€™re very capable, Riz, but I worry about you.ā€
He muttered something under his breath, holding out the stack of bills to her, holding that damn envelope in his other hand, still not making eye contact.
Riz was a perfect rouge. He had a light step and a light touch and an impeccable aim. He had a brain that ran a million miles per hour and a goblin grit he inherited from his father. Heā€™d been picking the lock to the apartment since he was twelve and learning to shoot a gun since he was thirteen. He was smart, sneaky and secretive.
But he didnā€™t keep secrets from her.
After Pok died, Sklonda had tried to keep many things from Riz. How scared she was. How exhausted she was. She would throw herself into work then throw herself into bed, crying with her face in Pokā€™s pillow as the signs of him faded from their life, as silent as she could so Riz wouldnā€™t hear. His desk became dusty, his razor sat unused, and his pillow stopped smelling like his cologne. She ran and ran and ran from the pain, never thinking about it, closing the door to his office where the ghost of her husband sat until Riz had tried to leave for school one day in shoes too big for him and a briefcase that hadnā€™t left the apartment in weeks.
At her protests, her nine-year old son had looked at her through his shaggy hair with big, sad, golden eyes. Pok had always been the one who gave Riz haircuts.
You never talk about him anymore, he said. You pretend you arenā€™t tired all the time and you pretend heā€™s not gone.
It hurts, mom.
Her beautiful, brilliant, investigative son had deduced what she wouldnā€™t, what she couldnā€™t tell him. It hurts. It hurts. It hurts.
Itā€™s okay if it hurts. Iā€™m still here.
She didnā€™t open the door to Pokā€™s room, and she didnā€™t let Riz go to school with his shoes. But from that day on Riz toted a briefcase everywhere, and on his tenth birthday she gave him a haircut, his own pair of brown loafers (still a little too big, but at the thrift store you take what you can get) and took him to Cravencroft where she whispered all her deepest fears, laid them down on the dirt under her sonā€™s knees and in front of her husbandā€™s grave, confessed to the bone-deep exhaustion that weighed down her arms and her legs and her heart.
Gukgaks donā€™t give up, Riz whispered back to her, golden eyes shining like suns, an echo of his fatherā€™s favorite phrase. She looked at his close-cropped hair and saw Pok. Then she looked at the bags under his eyes and saw herself.
After that Sklonda only had one secret to keep, and Riz had walked into Pokā€™s room and blew the dust off his desk two years ago in a mighty whirlwind of a 15 year-old detective hot on the case. With the blood of a dragon still hot in her stomach, she and Riz had promised to never hide anything from each other. Not their stress, not their exhaustion, and not their thoughts. Never again did she try to hide her tiredness from Riz, allowing him to replace her cold cups of coffee and lead her to bed on the days when her feet felt like stone, and when he got too jittery and manic with a drive to solve whatever mystery he was currently on she pressed at him until he eventually spilled his guts and she could get him to call a friend for backup in getting him to sleep at least four hours a night. Riz had been raised to notice all he could and never back down, and she had been the one to do it. He had his adventuring party, and she had a new job and new friends, but it was still just the two of them at odds with a world not meant for goblins, two Gukgaks in a shitty apartment, one weighed down with something they wouldnā€™t confess to and the other who noticed looking up through golden eyes.
Sklonda held out her hand for the red envelope.
Riz, who told her everything, who called her in freshman year every time he discovered something or murdered someone, who as soon as he got back from his spring break quest told her about Pok, who told her about the Loams and the Spies Tongue curse and Figā€™s (maybe) god, did not hand it over.
Not a chance in hell.
ā€œIā€™ll be in my room,ā€ Riz started, leaving his backpack by the sofa as he turned and started away.
ā€œWhatā€™s in the envelope, Riz.ā€ She said, pushing as much goblin mom into her voice as possible and knowing it worked when he froze in place. ā€œI donā€™t like knowing thereā€™s a secret youā€™re keeping from me.ā€
ā€œItā€™s not important.ā€
ā€œOf course it is.ā€
He laughed under his breath, still turned away from her. ā€œNo, I mean like, itā€™s really not important anymore. Nothing in there matters.ā€
ā€œRizā€¦ā€
He laughed again, and something in her stomach, a liquid mix of hot worry irritation worry froze into something heavy and cold like dread as his laugh broke into a dry gasp, sharp and cutting. ā€œItā€™s fine, mom, really.ā€
ā€œIā€™m sure itā€™s not, whatever it is, but Iā€™m sure itā€™s not that bad either. You can just tell me honey, you know I wonā€™t ever be mad.ā€
Her words seemed to register and nudge him away from whatever he was spiraling towards, but she still felt her lungs tighten and the cold sharpen in the pit of her stomach. He turned to look at her fully, and she didn't flinch, would never shy away from her son, but his eyes were dull, darker than sheā€™s ever seen, as dark as her own during those first few months of just her and Riz.
He handed her the envelope with shaky hands and in the blink of an eye was suddenly sitting down on the other side of the couch, pressing himself into the flat cushions like they could swallow him whole.
She opened the envelope with no small amount of trepidation, wondering what could be so bad that her son came home at a reasonable time at night.
Reaching inside, Sklonda pulled out two pieces of paper, one significantly bigger than the other. Looking at the smaller one first, her heart at first fell and the soared with pride as she beheld a small slip of paper detailing that her son had earned an A+ in his rouge track during his most recent semester. Student shows signs of mastery at mundane and arcane lockpicking. Student shows signs of mastery at detecting/disarming mundane and arcane traps. Student shows signs of mastery at dealing damage with both short and long range weaponry. Student shows signs of mastery at remaining unseen by others.
The list went on, and she turned to Riz with elation. ā€œThis is amazing, Riz!ā€
He looked at her out of the corner of his eye, sinking further into the cushions. ā€œRead the other one before I vomit again, mom.ā€
She flicked open the larger paper with confusion, starting to read, and with every word the ice in her stomach turned back into red hot anger.
Dear parent/guardian,
Your child, Riz Gukgak, has been moved to PASS/FAIL academic status at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy due to FAILURE/EXPULSION of party member Kristin Applebees. PASS/FAIL academic status will nullify any and all extra credit earned from extracurriculars including athletic teams, school-sponsored clubs, and volunteer work in compliance with the Aguefort Adventuring Academy. Your child will be allowed to remain at the Aguefort Adventuring Academy for the duration of their current school year. They must attend graduation and complete their teacher evaluation(s) in order to be accepted back into the Aguefort Adventuring Academy the upcoming year. If your child is a part of any multiclass program they will not be accepted back into their additional academic tracks and must remain only in their primary class the upcoming year. PASS/FAIL academic status cannot be removed or rectified from a studentā€™s academic transcript with exception of the undergoing and completion of The Last Standard Examination. Please contact guidance counselor Jawbone Oā€™Shaughnessy with questions, comments, or concerns.
Regards,
Interim Vice Principal Jace Stardiamond
Failure. Expulsion.
Kristen Applebees.
ā€œ-and I donā€™t even remember if weā€™re eligible to take The Last Stand this early in the year or if we have to wait until the last semester, but Kristin will be forced to leave this Friday, so if we canā€™t take it, I donā€™t know what weā€™ll do, Fabian, Gorgug, and Fig will be screwed next year and-ā€œ
Her blood was boiling, her ears were ringing, drowning out Rizā€™s voice.
Failure. Expulsion. Campaign manager. Someone elseā€™s homework. People who call him The Ball.
Kristin Applebees.
ā€œ-hates her, and I donā€™t understand why, itā€™s just not fair-ā€œ
ā€œItā€™s not fair,ā€ Sklonda hissed out, a mirror of Rizā€™s, her snarl cutting through the air and making the words die on her sonā€™s tongue. Forcing her hands to be still, pushing down the hot flash of rage in her belly, she schooled herself into the professionalism of Public Defender Sklonda Gukgak. Her son needed the cool head and steady tone that she prided herself on, her analytical eye and her forthrightness.
She could fret later. Her son had been blindsided by something she really should have seen coming ever since November, and it was time to address it.
She continued, voice low, watching her sonā€™s posture relax bit by bit. ā€œItā€™s not fair. Thank you for showing me, baby. Weā€™ll figure it out, I promise.ā€
Riz turned to face her fully on the couch, knee nudging hers, and the hotness of worry irritation worry surged behind her eyes for half a second as she noticed a vein on Rizā€™s forehead that had never been there before. ā€œYouā€™re not mad?ā€
ā€œNo, kiddo, not at you. Never at you.ā€
ā€œButā€¦ā€ He worried the chain of one of his necklaces between his teeth, a nervous trait he told her heā€™d picked up over the summer. He had sat up out of the cushions, but his knees were still drawn up uncomfortably, pressing his arms into his chest. ā€œWithout the pension, and without the extracurricularsā€¦ the scholarships-ā€
Stress was a thing Sklonda was familiar with. It lived in her apartment walls, on the underside of the peeling wallpaper. It filled the rooms in the flickers of darkness when the lights stopped working. It sat in the bottom of her coffee cups, and sheā€™d admit that she found herself chasing it like her son chased clues, with a lot of intensity and only a little self-awareness. She knows her son too well, just like his mother and father in all the best and worst ways. Riz had too much in common with her, too many bad habits, and sheā€™d sooner go back to her old job than ever let her son send himself more into the same stress-filled state she lived in for his party members.
ā€œItā€™s not your fault,ā€ she said, shuffling closer and putting an arm around Rizā€™s shoulders, wincing when she felt they were far too tight. Something in her quietly cooed when he laid his head down on her shoulder, glasses being knocked askew, strands of green hair falling and tickling her chin. ā€œIā€™m not mad at you. I know how hard youā€™ve worked this year, and Iā€™m so sorry Kristin messed it up for you.ā€
The shifting of chains between sharp fangs stopped. ā€œ...What?ā€
She rubbed his shoulder, keeping her voice low and soothing. ā€œYouā€™ve been doing far too much for her since the beginning of the year, Riz, it was really a matter of time before-ā€
ā€œMom, stop!ā€
Worry irritation worry confusion dread pooled in her gut as Riz shoved himself off her side and stood up off the couch furiously. ā€œYou canā€™t say that about Kristin, mom, how could you?ā€
She blinked hard. ā€œWhat do you mean, how could- she got expelled, Riz, I know she and Fig arenā€™t academically inclined but cā€™mon, at least Fig is actually trying.ā€
ā€œAnd what makes you think Kristin ā€˜isnā€™t tryingā€™?ā€ Riz scoffed, claws making quotes in the air with a harshness that rivaled when he tore into Kalvaxus two years ago. ā€œShe tries harder than the rest of us combined, she works so hard-ā€
ā€œAt what, Riz? Her campaign? The one that you run for her?ā€
ā€œYou don't get to talk about Kristin like that!ā€
This is exactly the opposite of what she wanted to happen. She wanted to hug her son and tell him it would all be alright while texting Sandra-lynn and Jawbone about what the heck The Last Standard Examination was and how Riz could take it. She could count on her fingers the amount of times conversations with Riz had turned to shouting, and even then they were always family matters, never about his party.
Sklonda loved Kristin, she really did. From the back half of freshman year until spring break of sophomore year Kristin spent a lot of time in Strongtower, rotating between the Faeth house and Gilearā€™s place down the hall before he moved out, wherever Fig was staying that week. Then it was down a few floors in Jawboneā€™s; sometimes she could still hear the shrieks of laughter echoing up through the thin floors as a gaggle of 15 year old adventurers ran through the halls far later than they were supposed to (not that she ever had the heart to tell Riz to keep it down when he hung out with his friends). Riz was a quiet kid before he went to Aguefort; Sklonda got the idea that Kristin had never been so. She always said what was on her mind, even if it was exceedingly inappropriate (sheā€™s heard enough stories from Sandra-Lynn about her and Tracker during spring break). Always loud, always chaotic, a girl who jumped from idea to idea like she jumped from home to home.
That was a little cruel of her to think, Sklonda had been the one to order the raid on her house, after all.
Kristin had gotten a little quieter after spring break, Even Sklonda, whose building was no longer the Bad Kidā€™s default hangout spot, could see that. But she had also gotten a lot more chaotic.
ā€œKristinā€™s a good kid,ā€ She said slowly, frowning when Riz shoved his hands under his glasses. ā€œBut you have to admit she struggles to stay on track sometimes.ā€
Riz glared at her through his fingers. ā€œDoesnā€™t give you the right to insult her.ā€
ā€œIā€™m not insulting her! Itā€™s just the facts, sweetie, I know sheā€™d never do anything to hurt you on purpose. But-ā€ She waved the paper towards him, and he flinched away as though she were brandishing a gun. ā€œ-thereā€™s two names on this paper, one being my son who joined every single extracurricular at the school and one being a girl whoā€™s name my former coworkers apparently know due to several dropped charges of trespassing at the steelworkers factory?ā€
ā€œYou know Iā€™ve probably got stuff on me too, mom, my midterm in December was to break into a warehouse downtown and plant a non-lethal arcane grenade set to go off when discovered.ā€
She remembered. It hadnā€™t gone off until February. Heā€™d gotten an A+.
ā€œThatā€™s different, and not the point. Yours was an assignment for school, and Kristinā€™s apparently not been doing hers.ā€
ā€œSheā€™s got reasons to struggle, her god died, mom, I was there-ā€œ
ā€œShe can still cast, canā€™t she? You do everything for her, why canā€™t she at least maintain a C?ā€
ā€œOh my-ā€ Riz dragged his hands down his face, muffling his next words. ā€œYou donā€™t understand-ā€
ā€œRiz, I just worry that-ā€
ā€œItā€™s not Kristinā€™s fault!ā€
ā€œThen whoā€™s is it?ā€
ā€œIā€™m trying to explain-ā€
ā€œRiz, donā€™t make excuses for her, she brought this on her-ā€
A sound filled the room, a short, sudden thing that sliced through the air. Rizā€™s eyes went wide, claws half curled at his side, and she realized the sound had just come from him.
Pressing his lips together as though he could stop the violent hiss that just came out of his mouth, Riz turned away and fled down the hall to his room, leaving his backpack and briefcase and a burning sensation behind Sklondaā€™s eyes that she couldnā€™t tell was rage or tears.
Another swing and a miss from Sklonda Gukgak about her poor, poor, boy.
A light flashed at the corner of her vision, startling her enough that her eyes were pulled away from the corner Riz disappeared behind. It was coming from within the couch cushions, and she reached in to pull out a blinking crystal.

10:09 pm
I L OVE OYU MAN THat assholes gonna pay for failing me on a fuckin technicality
What?
The blood rushing in her ears drowned out the incessant drone of the fluorescent light, but straining her hearing she realized that several floors down there was still the rumbling of a motorcycle.
Someone elseā€™s homework. People who call him The Ball. Campaign manager.
Kristin Applebees had dropped Riz off from her own house, had stayed with Fabian and refused to leave until he texted them back, and here Sklonda was blaming her and probing at her son until he hissed and ran from her.
All sensation left from her, and numbly she got off the couch and started toward Rizā€™s room, crystal in hand. Stopping outside the closed door, Sklonda didnā€™t bother to knock. She knew he knew she was there.
The door didnā€™t open.
I don't understand, I don't have all the facts, I donā€™t know whatā€™s going on, please tell me, she wanted to yell at the door like making more noise would save her from her mistakes.
ā€œYou left your crystal on the couch.ā€ She murmured softly instead.
A pause. More rustling of papers, and when Riz opened the door he was holding his glasses in one hand and what looked like a map in the other, eyes dark. She held the crystal out.
He took it gingerly, and the numbness faded by just a little bit when his eyes got a little brighter, flicking over the crystal screen. He didnā€™t smile, but his face lost a little bit of tension.
He bit his lip and looked at her. ā€œā€¦ Iā€™m sorry I hissed at you. I didnā€™t mean to.ā€
She tried to smile, but wasnā€™t sure she succeeded. ā€œIā€™m sorry I didnā€™t let you explain, sweetie. Iā€™m all ears.ā€
He glanced at his crystal again, something changing in his posture. For a moment she was afraid he would close the door again, and even though she wanted nothing more in the world than to demand answers, she would let him.
ā€œI donā€™t think I want to talk about it anymore tonight.ā€ He said slowly, cautiously.
Sklonda nodded, thinking desperately about asking Sandra-Lynn out for drinks tomorrow.
ā€œI justā€¦ā€ Riz looked down at the map in his hand, the words Ashgrove Cemetery scrawled in his handwriting at the top. ā€œWeā€™ve all worked so hard, Fig and Kristin and everyone, and-ā€
He swallowed. ā€œI was gonna find the rouge teacher, mom. And now it doesn't matter.ā€
She could think of a million things to say, but all that came out of her mouth was, ā€œGukgaks don't give up.ā€
Her brave, smart, resilient, beautiful sonā€™s eyes filled with tears, and he shut the door to his bedroom.
Stumbling back to the living room, Sklonda clumsily grabbed her crystal from the coffee table and sent a text, claws clicking against the screen.
10:13 pm
Jawbone, Riz just got home. What is The Last Stand?
The rumbling of the motorcycle faded from earshot. A few minutes later, her crystal lit up.
That oh so familiar heaviness of exhaustion and fear, the stress that lived in the bottom of her coffee cups, in the papers spilling out of Rizā€™s backpack hit her like a truck as she read Jawbone's response.
The lights flickered, and in the flash of darkness she saw a vision of her son, slumped over a desk, a paper in front of him with a dark red A+ written in goblin blood.

Iā€™ve never really done an Inktober before, but what the hell, imma try this year!
This is Marissa. Sheā€™s a college student who was on her way from classes when shit hit the fan. Her equipment consists of: a wallet containing 4 dollars, 2 expired coupons, her drivers license, and a gift card, a duffel bag with a cracked laptop, 2 schoolbooks, several pens and pencils, and 3 notebooks, an old flip phone, and some pepper spray. She survives by being wily enough to skitter outta tight situations.
Anywho, thank you Ellie for the prompts list!! Iā€™m gonna try to work on the next one after Iā€™m done babysitting tomorrow.
Toodles!~

"he'd be the type to.." luxiem edition ā™”
-
ike is the type of guy to have you two listen to classical music on cuddle nights and ask you what would you change about a part/what would you add, and then try his best to get help from the other niji members to help him make a version of that classical piece and play the "improved" versions for you on your anniversaries, and naming the remastered pieces, "(name)'s version" after taylor's "taylor's version". the boys would pat ike on the back for how dedicated he is to you, and they'd let you gush about ike and add embarrassing stories about him.
shu is the type of guy that would entertain you before you sleep, (with his sorcery) he whips up a spell that conjures moving, twinkling stars above your bed, and strokes your head as you two slowly fall asleep in eachothers arms, and the next day, he treats you to breakfast in bed, just watching any show you can find on tv, just enjoying eachothers prescence, giggling at comedic moments that happen in the movies, some even turning into an inside joke that you two would crack up about everytime you remember.
luca is the type of guy to text you about where you are when he misses you, if you're out with your friends on a friend date in a cafƩ, he'll pull up with the freshest rose bouquets. if you're out doing groceries, he'll hug you from behind and call you his spouse, and grabs all the coupons he saved for you from his wallet to help you, if you're thrifting, he'd help you pick out outfits and lingerie
vox is the type of guy that would take you on a camper van vacation, just driving around, sleeping in the forest, joking about the mosquitos sneaking into the van when you open the van door, you two setting up foldable chairs and a shitty campfire that almost did not want to light up, and a cooler filled with cans of beer, bottles of soju, and a single bottle of wine, saved for the last night of the vacation. he may not know the names of all the stars in the sky, but he'll rename them all, one by one, with and for you.
mysta is the type of guy that would take you on wine tasting dates, and have you two tier rank them on his laptop that he brought for "research purposes". he'll try his best to restrain himself from drinking too much, because he wants you to drink all you want, and he wants to be a responsible boyfriend. then you find out about how he's holding himself back on a date that's supposed to be fun, and now, you two are at home, drinking all you want, and even inviting the boys to play beer pong together.
