A festive greeting and wishes well this season to you all,

I cannot ignore what has passed so far and still what we have to come,

So allow me to recite a number of events and special days so far in this festive month of December 2024!

.

On December eighth did the Buddhist holiday Bodhi Day occur,

Where Gautama Buddha sat beneath a Bodhi tree,

Found the root of suffering and from it set himself free!

.

But as far as celebrations go there's more to hear!

.

From December twenty-first to first of January 2025 it's Yule for the Pagans so get those logs toasting and roasting!

.

Christmas Eve is the twenty-fourth, as expected of course,

The last chance to wrap gifts and visit friends and family,

Before the cookies and milk for Santa go out,

And later, when night falls, quiet goes the house,

So quiet nothing stirs; no, not even a mouse!

The fading melody of jingling bells and staccato hoof-beats on snow-covered shingles,

In your bed if you lie awake, is all you may just hear if you strain your ears,

But only in the morning, with empty glass and plate left behind, can you say for sure; “look! Santa was here!”

Christmas the Day follows the Eve to be, always, on the twenty-fifth,

All the gifts revealed to gleefully kids delivered by faith in St. Nicholas the myth,

With a meal fit for kings to be devoured in an hour, made throughout the morning and all the prep done the night before,

And if you're lucky you may hear the songs of Christmas cheer with carols and laughter when you open your door,

To share your happiness today with neighbour whether they be friend or foe,

Just for today at least, let animosity go,

It's Christmas after all, spread joy and cheer,

Have a great day and enjoy it without any fear!

Post-Christmas we have on the twenty-sixth, Boxing Day as it's known,

Celebrated across the commonwealth and in the UK too,

Once a day to donate to those in need it's now commercialised too much I believe,

So perhaps this Boxing Day some unwanted items you could gift for another to receive?

Enjoy the special offers out there if you can and maybe a nice meal,

But don't forget, the true Christmas Spirit does not lie in a shopping deal!

Running from December twenty-sixth to the first day of 2025 it's Kwanza with the Nguzo Saba or the Even Principles to live by:

First is Umoja that centres on unity of everything; family, community, nation, and of you,

Second is Kujichagulia where the importance lies in the self, to define and speak up for yourself is the focus of principle number two,

Third we have Ujima and this is all about collective work and responsibility to help each other out and promote unity,

The fourth principle is Ujamaa, where economic cooperation is the priority so all can be strong and supported in the community,

Fifth now is Nia and this is about purpose and worth; of you, yours, and your community too,

Sixth is Kuumba which is to be creative and do all that you can do,

Last but not least we have the seventh principle now; Imani which is to believe,

In your family, yourself, your people, your fight, and all you want to achieve!

In the same time frame as Kwanza we have another event to talk about too!

From December twenty-fifth to January second is the Jewish festival of Hanukkah,

Where the flames stayed lit for eight days in a miraculous phenomena,

The Greeks denied Jews the right to practice their faith so the Maccabees rebelled,

In 165 BC they won though the Holy Temple was destroyed but their faith they upheld,

The Temple was repaired and an oil lamp lit, though with not enough oil to burn more than a day,

Yet for eight days did it burn and earned from the Maccabees unending praise,

So now a candle is lit on the hanukkiah each day with the ninth candle, the shamash, as a dedication,

In order to remember and to offer thanks in genuine appreciation.
