Remember how I said I was looking at some of the cheesy 80s America’s Cup novels in CupInfo’s bibliography? I read an excerpt from The Challenge and the Glory that included the passage above and assumed “Eric Heiden” was the name for that book’s John-Bertrand-stand-in-Australian skipper, just like the American defender was “Alan Seton” rather than Dennis Conner. I thought it had a nice ring to it, so it stuck in my mind. But as I learned today at the Lake Placid Olympic Museum, Eric Heiden is a real person, an Olympic speed skater who was active in the 1970s and 80s. Together, Heiden and his sister Beth accounted for half of all of the medals won by Americans at the Lake Placid Olympics in 1980!
(The Winter Olympic Games aren’t usually relevant to this blog— unless they add iceboating sometime in the future, I guess…)

The sheer cartoonishness of “American lady in a cowboy hat, Soviet lady in a ushanka!” made me giggle a little bit in the Olympic Museum.
