Happy birthday Scottish actor Jimmy Yuill, born March 6th 1956 in Golspie, Sutherland.
Yuill is another of those Scottish actors that has been in an abundance of shows, and will be known, but not as a household name.Fans of the Crime drama series Wycliffe will know him best as DI Doug Kersey, in almost every episode, I will come back to that later.
Known mainly as an actor on the stage Jimmy began in 1976 in The Jesuit at the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh. After, as he put it “some joyous years” working on new plays and classics countrywide he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1983, as Snug in ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ and ended his time there, in 1987, as Young Wackford Squeers in Nicholas Nickleby on Broadway.
In 1988 he joined Kenneth Branagh’s Renaissance Theatre Company for Much Ado About Nothing, As You Like It and Hamlet directed by Judi Dench, Geraldine McEwan and Derek Jacobi, respectively. Also for RTC, Sicinius (Coriolanus); Telygin (Uncle Vanya) and Kent in Richard Brier’s ‘King Lear’.
Other roles include Toby Belch in Twelfth Night and as Henry IV parts1&2 at the Bristol Old Vic; In 2013 Jimmy played Banquo in ‘Macbeth’ at the Manchester International Festival and the following year at the Park Avenue Armory, New York. Most recently Jimmy played the Old Shepherd in The Winters Tale at the Garrick Theatre in London’s West End – both productions directed by Rob Ashford and Kenneth Branagh.
Jimmy Yuill, while always being busy treading the boards, has also found plenty time to appear in many TV shows, they include, in the 70’s The Mackinnons, The Omega Factor and the TV film A Sense of Freedom. in the 1980’s Eurocops and Boon and the 90’s mainly in Hamish Macbeth as Lachlan McCrae and the aforementioned Wycliffe. Into the new millennium he is a s busy as ever in the mini-series Monsignor Renard, A Touch of Frost and a recurring role in 14 episodes of Eastenders as Victor Brown an old frien of Ian Beales. Jimmy also appeared in several episodes of The Bill as D.S. Cottrell.
Yuill has had a longstanding friendship with Kenneth Branagh and has appeared in some of the Irish actor/directors films, including, Much Ado About Nothing, Frankenstien and As You Like It.
I said I would return to Wycliffe, where Jimmy starred in all but two episodes. The series was cancelled after that because Jack Shepherd, who played Wycliffe, refused to continue in the title role when the producers had sacked Yuill “for insurance reasons” after he contracted life-threatening meningitis during filming, and then would not reinstate him even though he made a full recovery. He says he owes his life to Shepherd with whom he was sharing a house while on location, and who rushed him to hospital in the middle of the night. Shepherd and the rest of the cast and crew felt so betrayed that they decided not to make any more episodes once filming of the current series had finished.
Along with Richard Briers he is one of only two actors other than Branagh himself, to appear in all five Shakespearean films that Branagh has directed: Yuill has worked as a performance consultant on a number of productions, and also as a producer.
More recently Jimmy has been in the movies Artemis Fowl , Kindred and my pick The Road Dance, which is set in The Outer Hebrides just before World War One. He also popped up in the Scottish dark comedy series Guilt, There are no pdates on his work in the past three years

11, 39, 49 fooooooorrrrrr Lachlan?
from this list here
AHHH! Thank you for asking about Lachlan!!!! <3 Let's see here...
11. Who is in their inner circle?
Oh gosh, tough tough tough.
Before ME1, it's his brother, Iain, Kaidan, and Serafina and Sean MacKinnon (who grew up with him and Iain on Mindoir).
He's close to all the NPCs in the games, but I would have to say his innermost circle of them would be Wrex, Garrus, Tali, Kasumi, Samara, Mordin and Dr. Chakwas. But like I said, he gets along with all of them very well, so it's difficult to narrow it down. (this is also predicated on the assumption that his husband really doesn't count on this list, you know? lol Because yeah, Kaidan's at the top of it)
After the war, it shifts a little bit. He recently told me he wants to go back to Mindoir sometime after the relays are fixed, and of course Iain and Coats will tag along. Serafina and Sean and their SOs show up at some point, getting land nearby. (something about the first time around and what their parents were trying to accomplish leading them all back home, I guess). I think Jack (who Lachlan adores but just isn't sure how to show it in a way so Jack won't haul off and hurt him), Kahlee and Miranda show up eventually and convince Kaidan to help them with a biotic school, so Lachlan is seeing them constantly and finally figures out Jack and Miranda and being the friendly guy that he is, pretty much pulls them into his closest bunch of friends he has at that point. (still figuring out the post war stuff, so that's subject to change)
39. What would Shepard say their flaws are?
Ask Mama Shepard: he's got too much energy and doesn't know how to put it all to good use!
Seriously though, Lachlan is a kind and generous man. I suppose his 'worst' flaw is that he cares too much and wants things to work out 'right.' (he is, I think, the most Paragon of all my Sheps)
49. What do they wear to sleep?
He switches between a ragged old Alliance T-Shirt he got in Basic (what he doesn't know is Kaidan switches it out on him when it gets too old and ragged lol) and a Fish Dog Food Shack one that Grunt gets him at some point, with cotton or flannel sleep pants.
Thanks so much for the asks! Lachlan is starting to perk up in my head again, so I'm delighted to explore some more about him! <3

The Psalmist | Lachlan Mackinnon
When I look up my soul is water, it trembles beneath your breath as the skin of a mountain pool shakes below whistled cloud.
Where there is music let each voice praise you, clashing cymbals unleash their roaring whisper, the strings sing
at one with braided voices of boys and girls, and let the harpist bow her sweet neck to the sweet burden of an air plucked from air,
the trumpeter bray what you have promised, that you will move among us to bind each wound, that all things shall be made good.
Chosen by Carol Anne Duffy as one of her  Poems to get us through

We talked to Deborah Harkness and the cast and creators of the upcoming A Discovery of Witches TV adaptation! We’ve got new details about the series, including what fans can expect and where we’ll be able to watch in the USA.
Anyone who has talked to me over the last month knows that A Discovery of Witches was at the tip-top of my San Diego Comic-Con mustsee/mustdo list! As soon as I found out that the series would have a panel at SDCC, I knew I had to find my way to that panel and pressroom. Mostly, I was anticipating news about a U.S. home for the series… information that we did get! A Discovery of Witches will stream on Sundance Now, AMC Networks’ direct-to-consumer SVOD service curated with high quality dramas, comedies and crime thrillers, and Shudder, the leading premium streaming service for thriller, suspense and horror.
A Discovery of Witches will have eight episodes in the first season, and when it makes its debut in the U.S. and Canada (on a date to be confirmed later), all episodes available simultaneously on both Sundance Now and Shudder.
While our UK friends will get to enjoy the series starting Friday, September 14 on Sky One, for now, us U.S. fans will be rewatching the fabulous teaser trailer.
To help tide us over, I also suggest checking out the interviews we did with Deborah Harkness and the A Discovery of Witches cast at SDCC! Teresa Palmer (Diana Bishop), Alex Kingston (Sarah Bishop), Valarie Pettiford (Emily Mather), Owen Teale (Peter Knox), and Lachlan MacKinnon (EP) were on-hand to tell us more about adapting this series to TV and what fans can expect.
According to Deb Harkness, she was only interested in having A Discovery of Witches adapted as long as it was possible to maintain the integrity of the story. It was a difficult process to find the right collaborators for the project. Similarly, the actual work of adaptation was fun, but ambitious, especially in terms of blowing up the world and expanding beyond Diana Bishop’s POV and experiences.
Deb also shares her thoughts on casting the series–how the casting of Teresa Palmer as Diana was perfect, in terms of her physical appearance and spirit. In fact, Deb thinks that in the series casting as a whole, all of the actors have been on point, and this has translated to their authentic portrayal of the characters. Owen Teale agrees, and discusses the ways in which he’s taken on the role of Peter Knox and advocated for his character.
As a viewer, I especially appreciate Deb’s and Owen’s discussion of wanting to have a story that appeals to women in their 30s and addressing women at various stages of life. This also couples with the LGBTQ representation embedded in the series and the broader ways A Discovery of Witches encourages inclusion and empathy in entertainment and the real world.
In our interview with Teresa Palmer she tells us that she wasn’t familiar with the book series when it came out. Rather it was the script that really caught her attention and Teresa instantly felt connected to Diana Bishop. (And we know that Deb feels the exact same about Teresa!) Tez shares how she loves Diana’s passion and vulnerability and the journey Diana takes to come to terms with who she is as a witch. I ask Teresa a little more about the tension within Diana, between the academic and the supernatural being, and she discusses how the magic literally bubbles out of Diana, as she wrestles with suppress that side of herself.
Lachlan jumps in before we can get too spoiler-y, but tells us about the technical elements of filming magic scenes, especially as Diana’s magic grows over the series. Teresa also discusses the chemistry test with Matthew Goode and how organic their interactions felt from day one. At about 8:00, Teresa tells a story about how she and Matthew would goof around on set, to the point that a serious scene had to be transitioned to a comedic one. But ultimately, the series is a love story with a strong element of thriller, based as much as possible in the real world.
Both Teresa and Lachlan talk about adapting a series with such a dedicated fanbase. Teresa says this helps her want to do her best with the series and how they all appreciate the love of the fans: “I also have found it just thrilling to have this kind of energy behind the series.”
Finally, we chatted with Alex Kingston and Valarie Pettiford, who play Sarah Bishop and Emily Mather, Diana’s aunts who raise her after her parents’ deaths. Valarie and Alex speak about the ways in which their romantic relationship onscreen normalize LGBTQ relationships, especially in this world where being Queer isn’t what sets them apart. Rather, it’s one’s distinction as a witch, vampire, or daemon that they have to hide, not their love. Alex shares an interesting story about a photo at the Bishop house of Sarah and Emily wearing pussy-hats at their local Women’s March. Whereas one producer was concerned about being too political, Alex, Valarie, and Deb perceived it as being realistic. Sarah and Emily would have been at that march! Piggy-backing off of that, Alex and Valarie discuss how the key creative decision-makers on the series are women.
I follow with a question about the theme of family in the series and both Alex and Valarie talk about the tension between Sarah and Diana, motivated by deep care and concern for her niece. This also expands to a discussion of recognizing one’s ancestry and they ways in which the Bishop and Mather families have been connected for centuries.
Alex and Valarie also talk about seeing the first four episodes of the series and how impressed they are with they way the episodes have been shot, which helps to ground the story in a realism reminiscent of our world.
What do you think? Which scenes are you hoping will make it from the book to screen? Check out 20+ images from the panel below, and make sure to stay tuned to WSN for your A Discovery of Witches updates!

Filmed in the UK at Wolf Studios Wales and on location in Oxford, “A Discovery of Witches” is a contemporary love story that begins against the backdrop of Oxford academic life, in a world where small numbers of witches, vampires and daemons live and work, unseen amongst humans, hiding in plain sight. Teresa Palmer is the brilliant historian Diana Bishop, a reluctant witch denying her heritage. The discovery of a bewitched manuscript in Oxford’s Bodleian Library throws her into the heart of a dangerous mystery – and into the path of the enigmatic vampire and geneticist, Matthew Clairmont (Matthew Goode), who hides a dark family secret. As Diana and Matthew embark on a journey to understand the secrets of the ancient manuscript, their relationship develops, and events threaten to unravel the fragile peace that has long existed between witches, vampires, daemons and humans. Alex Kingston plays Sarah Bishop – Diana’s aunt, Valarie Pettiford plays her partner Emily Mather, and Owen Teale plays Peter Knox, a member of the Congregation. “A Discovery of Witches” was adapted for screen by writer Kate Brooke (“Mr. Selfridge”). Co-founder of Bad Wolf, Jane Tranter is the executive producer and Juan Carlos Medina (“Painless”) directs.

Anything Goes - No, anything but that
Tumblr media
Chapter: No, anything but that
Summary:
In olden days, a glimpse of stocking Was looked on as something shocking But now, God knows anything goes...
- Cole Porter, Anything Goes
Small glimpses into the life of John Smith and Lachlan Berger.
A series of prompts from the Flufftober 2020, Fictober 2022, and October 2022 lists off Tumblr; written and posted in no particular order. Part of the Romance & Resistance Mass Effect/WWII crossover series.
Excerpt:
They were going to come for him and he had no way to avoid it.
Just under a year ago – still?  Had it really been so little time? – the idea of war had been that of trenches and gas masks, of stopping the Germans at the Maginot Line and keeping the atrocities from the first time around from happening again.  John and Iain had been sent off to stop it, to keep it coming to Britain’s doorstep.
But the boches had proved too clever.  Why stick with the old way of playing war when you could reinvent horrors meant to kill and destroy the world?  No, they had invaded France, poured over the country – all of Europe, really; the French were only most recent – like too much cream in your tea.  And now Britain was in their sights.  The last gem in the crown, so to speak.
And here we sit, ripe for the taking.
They’d saved the men off Dunkirk – well, many of them, anyway – but not the equipment.  It was a sore spot with many, an inspiration for others.  But for Lachlan, it meant one thing: now that the war was on in full, now that his students had all been evacuated from the city yet again, he was without a job, and that meant the military machine that had forced John overseas to serve for a foreign country, who’d sent Iain off to fight only to come back crippled in body and spirit, would now come for him.
It was a worrisome situation, to say the least.
Read Chapter | Read From Beginning | Read Series
This work is part of a collaborative side series to the main ME/WWII series, Something Wicked This Way Comes and features @happychica's John Shepard as John Smith with Ladyamesindy's Lachlan Shepard as Lachlan Berger. The time frame of events ranges from Spring 1938 through the Second World War.

⚠✨ ** All Souls Con ** ✨ ⚠
What a day ! So much to say ! (I made a huge photo album on Facebook, sorry it's too late to post them here)
https://www.facebook.com/adiscoveryofwitchesfrance/photos/?tab=album&album_id=473814206751054
We begun the day being welcomed in a fantastic theater with some costumes from the first season on the stage.
Then we watched the featurettes from the first season we couldn’t see on the DVD grrr… Interviews, behind the scene with the art designer… It was fascinating.
Headline went on explaining how they launched and market the books, from the very first to Time’s Convert. Their marketing plan and media plan was very inspiring.
After the break, we had the opportunity to have the Bad Wolf team on stage : Lachlan MacKinnon executive producer, James North, Production designer, Sarah Arthur, Costume designer and Gareth Skelding, Location Manager. They shared with us so many details on the art processing with pictures, sketches. We even could see some of the fabrics they are going to use for Diana’s cape or Matthew’s trousers and some sketches. They also explained and show us the sketches of what the Elizabethan streets are going to looks like ! It’s going to be fabulous and so impressive. They still have a lot of work to do. For now, only the interiors of Diana’s & Matthew’s London house are finished and they are going to shoot in a few days ! Lachlan told us they have shot yesterday the very first scene of the very first episode of the season !
After the lunch break we had a musical session with two lute players.
And the panel we were all looking for arrived at last : the cast panel !
We discovered Teresa Palmer, Edward Bluemel, Adelle Léonce, Tristan Gravelle and Valarie Pettiford. Deborah Harkness host the Q&A and it was hilarious ! We learned they work between 12 to 15 hours a day, sometimes longer with the night shoots.
To the question, “what do you expect the most for this season ?” Edward answered working with Lindsay Duncan and Greg Chillin, Valarie getting into dark magic and working with A Lindsay Duncan and Teresa getting into the historical costumes (even if the corset is the challenge to breastfeed)
When they were asked to define their character in a word, Edward cheated saying two : 1st season : immature, 2d season : horny . Valarie said “Heart” for Em, Tristan “Frustrated” for Baldwin, Adelle “open” for Phoebe and Teresa “Empowered” for Diana.
They finished the panel by an announcement: the cast of Tom Hughes for playing Kit Marlowe !
Personally I had the chance to meet the cast afterward and to take some photos with them. I was very lucky !
The day finished with fan panel or costumes panel.
And as a newcomer, I attended to a fantastic unofficial dinner organized by two of the attendant in the magic place of the Royal Welsh college of Music and Drama. It was wonderful to meet so many “virtual” friends in flesh !
