Hey, so you said in your tags about how katsuki is a freak in his own way, could you please expand on this idea a little and when it comes to Izuku?

Sure!

I actually made a post about this very concept semi recently but that post also didn’t really have organization lmao

The main reason I’ve always thought Katsuki as “a freak” as I dub him is for the very foundations of his personality. I think the main reason why no one in the western fandom looks at him and sees him for his (kinda) socially inept aspects is because of a combination between cultural differences and the nuances that hero society throws into Japan specifically.

It’s well known that Horikoshi’s story/world is heavily influenced by American super hero comics. Superman, Spider-Man, Harley, Poison Ivy, Bat-man, Captain America, ant man, etc. are all very obvious influences throughout the story, with characters like Allmight often feeling like a combination of Superman and Captain America.

The reason I bring this up is because the very aspects of these super hero comics is kind of in direct contradiction with Japanese society, especially as those heroics within the world affect the society around them.

Heroes are this curve ball thrown into a society that teaches its citizens to be polite, complicit, and quiet. That’s not to say that this is necessarily a “wrong” way to have a society, but I think it’s with this context that Katsuki’s character (and therefore the intentions behind it) become clearer.

Heroes are bright, loud, and powerful. But long before Katsuki was a hero he already was these things; how does that affect his social life? How do the people around him treat him in the context that he is both not a hero nor having of a quirk? If heroes are the “exceptions” to the society around them, and Katsuki is not yet an exception, then he is an outcast, right?

It’s this context that I feel most people forget. Katsuki understands the people around him, he’s very observant and nosy, but he also just doesn’t care. He is unabashedly himself at all times. Those jokes Aizawa made about keeping him out of the spotlight showcase this perfectly, Japanese society expects a certain standard for the social context around him—which he actively ignores.

It’s a very ironic aspect to his character given that most people admire and/or envy him. It puts a whole new light on izuku saying that he was the one “actually in his life”, that Izuku may have admired him before his quirk for simply being himself. Not to mention how it makes sense that he would believe izuku was looking down on him for admiring him before his quirk, because Katsuki was bullied! I think that’s an often overlooked detail given that he only became “acceptable” to most kids around him when he gained his quirk. The memory this is showcased in is entirely Izuku’s pov, which is heavily biased in the sense that he admired Katsuki. Getting jumped by kids two years older than you though is so weird, and I can’t help but wonder if the perspective might’ve changed were it in Katsuki’s pov.

To me, the idea that Izuku’s memories of Katsuki being this social god come from blind childlike envy and admiration, especially as the contextual things happening (Katsuki is a REALLY big hero fan, he’s rude, he doesn’t remember people’s names, actively terrible at making friends at UA for a good couple weeks, getting bullied to even a minimal extent) in comparison to the words being told. You are told by Izuku that Katsuki is amazing, brilliant, talented, energetic, crass, and in reality (especially when they enter UA), to most people Katsuki is annoying, loud, mean, a little intimidating, and not nearly as cool as he thinks he is. His friends spend the entirety of the beginning of their first year actively making fun of him for thinking he’s tough shit when he so obviously isn’t.

And I think the biggest most important part to this “Katsuki is a bit of a social outcast” discussion, is that the villains thought he was like them! They thought he would hurt people because he screamed “die” and didn’t like winning when he felt he didn’t earn it.

The only reason Katsuki is not as much of an outcast as, say, Izuku, is simply because he won the lottery. He earned that extra point. He caught that curve ball to Japanese society and honed it into something greater.

And, see, Izuku can’t really know/comprehend that Katsuki would be, I don’t know, unpopular to any extent (shown in the beginning of the series when he’s freaking out on the bus that HES being complimented and Katsuki is being insulted), because to him Katsuki always acted like a hero. And in a way, he does! But it’s in the way that hero society throws that curve ball, contradictory to social norms, and of course it makes sense why they still happened at all; the past was dangerous! It was life changing! Disparity and violence and death, desperation fueled this huge monumental change. And what is izuku “I don’t know how to make people like me” Midoriya going to do when this kid, Bakugou Katsuki, acts like one of the heroes on TV? He’s not gonna call the Geneva convention and ask why the hell this child isn’t acting like a normal citizen—he’ll admire him to such a visceral degree because it’s almost like he was born a hero.

I like the concept that, because heroes and villain are cut from the same cloth, relatively similar in concept and strength and past hurts in their history, that this also affects how they are socially. You are outcasted by society: you want to oppose societal norms to live freely as yourself and others as theirselves, you want to make sure everyone can smile at the end of the day because sometimes you or your parents couldn’t, you want to be the best because someone told you that you couldn’t, you want to be just like the hero on your TV, who inspired the hero in your life.

Also you need to be at least a little bit of a freak to be listening in on people’s business all the time because it involves your childhood friend/rival to literally any degree. Like bro what is wrong with you come HERE BBG LET ME PICK YOUR BRAIN APART PIECE BY PIECE

Also Eddie was trying to find the star so he could grab a chunk of it and barter it for a new electric guitar lmao. I really loved the premise I came up with and thought the first chapter was great; unfortunately the fic is fuckin cursed and will never be finished (by me. if anyone wants to take a swing at the story where I left it off feel free!)

I started working on this goofy little crack fic forever ago where Steve was a member of the snooty grandmas-only Loch Nora Gardening Club, and he was all stressed out because the ladies had beef with the neighboring town's club and had somehow put Steve in charge of operation "publicly humiliate them by throwing a better annual fundraising party"

and then Eddie, being the impulsive horny dumbass that he is, was jokingly like "hey, you could come to my garden party some time" and Steve's like "you're in a gardening club?" "yeah, technically! sure!"

then Eddie drives him to Indy and pulls them up to this shady little sex club called The Pleasure Garden and Steve gets gently bullied by a drag queen lmaooo

Dialogue dialogue dialogue. Also I think in weird synesthesia (some words taste bad, some memories smell like cinnamon, ya know what I mean) so I feel like my imagery toward the fun and funky side

All the silly important shit that goes around the dialogue. And writing a seamless big group scene - more than four people in a conversation and the pacing gets so ssx tricky

Mmmm. I mean, I tend to avoid it unless the fic/character actually requires it. Like I did a Robin POV fic where Robin would think certain curse words in different languages because it seemed fitting for the girl who's fluent in four languages, ya know? Ooh, I do also love a good "character royally botches what they're trying to say" moment so foreign language phrases are fun for that

Oh there's...a few lmao. I have a tendency to read fics that horrify me for fun, and since we're on the webbed site that likes to judge people for using the Dead Dove tag, or any of the main Archive Warning tags, I'd rather not put those fics on blast. But I have read some truly brilliantly written and fucked up fics from the Fantastic Beasts fandom, that's all I'll say.

Japanese curry with chicken! That or Fettucine Alfredo. I like to overstuff my guests with food and those are my two go to meals for company!

In all seriousness though, I think my big ones I can think of are Shigaraki and Dabi from BNHA. Are they both awful, ruthless people who only want to cause pain and suffering to all who have hurt them? Yes. Do I want them to keep causing even more pain and suffering, even to my favorite hero characters, as a treat? Also yes.

I hate to caveat that in no way do I think any of of their actions are justified and that the villains should win and then the world would be a better place yada yada yada but well. Woobifying villains is a thing and also why I stay out of the fandom because I cannot stand my faves being defanged like that. Let my faves be horrible people aoijdosijad.

What would accompany your picture in the Burn Book in Mean Girls?:

Either the "Mexican Asian" (I'm Filipino-American, and sadly this is a thing I was called a lot lmao) or "The Hugger." I know a shit ton of people judged me a bit in school for being a hugger because...idk, people thought hugs were weird lmao. But joke's on them, I still enjoy hugs and Mr. Seiya hugs me all the time!

Yes and no. I do feel bad the foundation of her story was be a woman killed for the glory of a man. And then to be remembered only as a horror, a monster to scare people with.

The modern interpretation of her story is absolutely fascinating to me and while it is still a tragic story, I absolutely love what she's come to represent. I love that her story has been rewritten to be a story of survival, of perseverance, of power even.

2. Which of your WIPs is currently the longest?

the mudslide fic is currently standing at 38.6k and I expect at the very least 20k more... which wouldn't just make it my longest current wip, but also the longest fic I've ever written

3. Which WIP do you expect will end up the longest?

the mudslide fic hands down, unless something drastic happens and one of my wips gets away from me (though from the inactive wips I expect two of them to be around the same length, possibly)

4. Which WIP is your favourite to write/the most enjoyable to write? Why?

I enjoy all of them, but the mudslide fic is surprisingly joyous to write, even though it's mostly just me putting the boys through the emotional and physical wringer lmao

5. Which WIP do you find the most intimidating to write? Why?

listen. I love writing the mudslide fic, but I kinda wrote myself into a hole with it, in the sense that I included a couple of real life locations (though only vaguely) that I just had to make shit up for, which is fine cuz the show does the same, but... idk it's long and the boys spend quite a large chunk of the story separate and it makes me worry that people will find it boring or just idk will be nitpicky about it... like, I have confidence in my writing, but I'm also forever insecure about it??? ugh

uhhh I guess the accident fic?? because it's short and it's kind of written in the way I usually write ficlets, which means I don't spiral about the details that much and now I'm worried that it's gonna seem rushed or way too out of sorts 😓

uhmmm I don't have high expectations for any of them, if we're talking about like, comments and kudos and stuff... usually the fics I just write in a moment of inspiration and just throw online get more attention than the ones I try to finetune for hours/days/weeks, so you know... I try to write fics for myself and hope that there are people they resonate with 🫶

And yeah I know a bit!!! As mentioned before though I’ve only gotten through like chapter 1 of yuki’s so far partially because of slower reading but also because I got sidetracked doom scrolling after trying to dig for a tiktok LMAO

BUT I almost cried looking at the index though one of the later chapters for yuki is “a lifetime’s worth of tears” GOODBYE I think we all know what that’s about :,,,)

Once I finish read them in their entirety I’ll come back and slap more formal summaries of each chapter but basically YUKI IS SUCH A SENTIMENTAL BOY SHSGSH basically first chapter details his first day of elementary school/entrance ceremony (he’s got a loving set of parents thank god) but basically he’s a rather mature boy and is pretty stoic and shy so he worries about making friends. As he’s walking in there’s Sakura trees in the yard that are causing petals to fall and yuki grabs one and stores it in his pocket (that’s where he gets his “fetish” from ig LMAO) In the end he befriends his seatmate and another girl, and ofc the way they first meet is just via self-intros and reading each others name tags and the name tag part is highly emphasized in the chapter!! His seatmate makes it a point to stare at his name tag and the girl literally like yanks his shirt to get a better look at the name tag (LMAO). Anyways, first day goes well and yuki goes home with his parents all happy and whatnot until he gets home and starts changing into home clothes and realizes his name tag isn’t with his jacket like he thought it was supposed to be!! He gets all frantic because the name tag was really special to him, since his mom had handwritten his name onto it and (this next part is more implied) it was a memento of his first day at school where he managed to make friends! So he literally runs out like mom I can’t find it and his mom’s like “oh no! We’ll just have to order you another one then” and yukis like “No..that one was special..” so literally right before they plan to eat dinner he runs out back to school to try and search for it and ofc (as the non negligent parents they are) his parents chase after him!! They end up going back and forth tracing their steps from their home to school like three times and yukis like on the ground searching under cars and just checking everywhere and after their third try his parents are like “it’s time to go home kenyu…we’ll order you another don’t worry! You must be hungry now” and begrudgingly on the verge of tears yuki’s like ok…and goes to take some sakura petals from the ground at least to make up for it but turns out his name tag was buried under the petals shdgshsh he’s so happy he’s crying tears of joy* and he’s glad he didn’t give up and his parents are hugging him as he cries and he thinks to himself “God was looking out for me, as long as I don’t give up, these sorts of wonderful things will be sure to happen” and it ends with “His honesty and determination gave birth to a small miracle”

It was so cute he really held that name tag close to his heart even after just one day!! And he’s very perceptive..like when his parents were getting ready to go back home he realized that they’re probably also exhausted and you can kinda feel that he feels bad about that which is why he reluctantly agrees to going home! He was also really nervous entering school LOL even his parents were a bit worried that he was too quiet/stoic to make friends

Hey, that post is over a year old and was a vent post I made (my main problem was tagging it but I didn't expect it to blow up, naively.) specifically in response to the extreme amounts of transphobia I was having to put up with from the cis women in my life. The post was never meant to Literally Suggest they Never Use The Word Woman Ever but pointing out how they Only Ever said women and then if you pointed out that this also pertained to you they just would go "yeah whatever you're included too we're just never going to mention you fucking ever"

It was literally just going hey, a lot of the shit y'all think are exclusively a (cis) woman experience really fucking aren't and I'm tired of the way that cis feminists completely fucking ignore trans and nonbinary people other than a cursory "oh they're valid [we just are never going to address them ever in our goddamn life and act super bothered when they ask to be acknowledged during a discussion]"

Was the post well worded? Absolutely not but now that I've had time to reflect on everything I do think it's really fucking weird how when I started getting harassment over that post from transphobes trying to misgender me and calling me slurs and shit the main reaction people had was "ugh you made a poorly worded post you're an embarrassment to trans people you're making us look bad you deserve to be harassed" (<- heavily paraphrased it's been over a year but at the time I felt extremely guilty for the crime of not wording a post in a hard to strawman perfectly unproblematic way on tumblr dot com)

I was going to reply in tags but I think I have too many thoughts to fit in them fmshfkshfd (post-writing the post me: YES WAY TOO MUCH.)

Real good read as a person who one of their fave characters is Mifuyu. Because like? I fully get people not liking her gkdhgkhdf. The reason I like her so much besides the dynamic with Yachiyo (uhhh that'll need elaboration and clarification later into the post) is because-- well I think her description, while putting it real damn lightly, is right. "Though kind and gentle, her spirit is weak, which leads her to make bad decisions from time to time."

Mifuyu would be a kind person in any other situation, but faced with the deaths of her friends and finding out the truth about magical girls, she does a bunch of terrible selfish shit and keeps rationalising it to herself. Like in her MSS where she goes on about how bad she feels for all the people she's recruited just to help herself basically. And like. She does feel bad about it! But she keeps doing it anyways. And says she has to stay in the Magius now for them. Which is just a mindset and cycle she makes up that traps her in there and makes her feel slightly better about herself until the Magius can succeed and it will be all worth it in her mind.

And her kindness does show through from time to time still-- but it doesn't make everything else any better.

Personally I've got problems with both the game and anime portrayal of her. (Well, in the anime's case it's more to do with Yachiyo's dynamic with her. Again, I will elaborate fkdhjfhdhf)

So my love for her is kinda this weird mix in my brain of the things I like from both.

I like her breaking people out of the mind control well enough like with Sana and Felicia, and even Shizuku in an event indirectly iirc. As like, first baby steps to making it up to the people she's pulled into the magius. But I really prefer the anime's handling of the moment she first starts to go against the magius. It's meeting a brainwashed Tsuruno. Which also hits harder since in the anime-- the magius brainwashing doesn't exist (thank god). It's such a like. Self-centered wake-up call. She only feels like it's going too far even for her when suddenly it's effecting her past best friends in a way she doesn't like. She felt bad for the people brought into the magius before, sure, but only when it was someone really close to her from before the magius did she decide to actually do something about it. Very important characterising moment to me.

I still need to fucking get myself to continue reading main story arc 1 but I always got the impression I won't really like her redemption much. Yeah, it's too easy. Her anime one is *chef's kiss* though. So important that she puts her life on the line to help the feathers for once. ALL of them. Like she made them do for her sake. Even as a sacrificial death, like, I'm fine with that. Doesn't DESERVE it, but if ever there was a time to put a death in there-- Only a bit more mixed on it now because for some reason the anime decided it needed like 7 deaths in the last 3 episodes and none of them were good except for Mifuyu's lmao.

(Also random thing. I find it so weird to discuss whether a character deserves a death or not in this series??? Like who ever did lmao. That's not really the point to the deaths in this franchise. The good ones are just tragic and have a point or purpose to em. Mifuyu's was sacrificing her life to save the people she effectively was sacrificing for herself)

The thing I like better with her in the game is how Yachiyo reacts to her (finally elaborating lmaooo). Yachiyo being immediately constantly angry with no remorse at Mifuyu in the anime is like. Probably what Mifuyu deserves lmao. But Yachiyo and Mifuyu were inseparable for 7 YEARS. Yachiyo's main motivation early on and what ties her and Iroha together is her searching for Mifuyu the same way Iroha is searching for Ui. And the game's much slower pace lets us actually have moments of Yachiyo longing to see Mifuyu again, and after they do meet, feel sad that this is what everything's come to- her best friend and who she's been searching for is now her enemy. Anime Yachiyo kinda. Barely cares, and then finds Mifuyu, and then she's mad, and that's mostly it gkdjgkjdf. There's the one good scene when she's beating the shit out of Mifuyu (good for her) and realises she doesn't want this. But like she should've reacted like that immediately kfjdkgjdf. Idk, her feeling more sad than angry feels more real to me to how someone would react in this situation, but maybe that's just a me thing.

TL;DR I guess. I love Mifuyu. She would be nice if it weren't for meguca suffering, but now she's terrible. She feels bad about it and the kindness shows through on occasion but doesn't immediately redeem her. Still like her getting redemption later on. She feels both kind and deeply selfish in a very real way to me. I prefer her anime portrayal as a character, but prefer her dynamic with Yachiyo in the game.

There are lots of Mifuyu fans out there so I'm going to put this under a cut so they can skip my negativity if they want to

I personally found it pretty gross that she was the recruiter for WoM, with it being said over and over again how all these kids trusted her and joined the WoM *because* of her, while Mifuyu herself was so conflicted on the thing and knew that she was doing wrong. It doesn't help that she's an older person with lots of experience as a magical girl.

I dunno. It'd be one thing if Mifuyu was a part of WoM because she herself was weak and it only affected her. But she brought lots of kids into the cult too. Like... the only thing that made a bunch of recruits back down in the end was Mifuyu. That's the pull she had. That's how much trust people had in her. And I find it gross that she used kids to keep herself safe like that.

I think it also didn't help that the story was... it kept trying to say "wow look at how nice Mifuyu is! Felicia forgives her right away, Yachiyo still loves her etc etc". I much preferred the anime in this regard where Yachiyo still doesn't trust her/like her after all is said and done (I don't think Mifuyu needed to die though???). She shouldn't be trusted right away!! She shouldn't have been forgiven so quickly!!

Really, when thinking about it, I think that a large part of it is her presentation and how the story's characters reacted to her. You had a lot of characters rightfully hate Touka, Nemu, Alina, and even Holy Mami, but it felt like Mifuyu got off a little too free at the end. Yeah yeah she's all like "I need to atone for my sins!" but that wasn't satisfying for me whatsoever.

Honestly, the anime went a long way for me in making Mifuyu far more likeable-- it did this by making her character feel more solid (she wasn't the one to undo the mind control on SanaFeli, they left on their own accord instead), by making her feel more pathetic (drinking and lounging about while whining lmao), and then by getting her act together and standing up to TouNemu. It never felt like the anime was saying "oh yeah she's weak and she's letting all of this happen but don't worry guys she's still a really good person under it all!" It was more... "this woman is fucking pathetic and look at what she's letting happen to these kids who trust her. But maybe she can still redeem herself. She's scared. But she needs to try."

Her sacrifice at the end was so much better too, again even if I didn't think she should have died. Fuck getting injured going all out to a bear uwasa; having Mifuyu save all the recruits who were doppel syndrome'd, girls that she was personally responsible for their being there, was so so much better.

I know that there are far worse characters in the story morally-speaking, but Mifuyu just disgusted me for the longest time. But the anime and her fairytale mgs went a good way of smoothing her over for me. The anime actually made me like Mifuyu.

Anyways, that's why I personally dislike her. I know she has a lot of fans on tumblr (and then a lot of detractors in other places), but this is my own personal opinion on the thing.

Like you understand that first is just worse and second is no excuse. Like yeah Hori probs wont see any of the outrage and that cover will sell like hotcakes but these are still important conversations to have in fandom about the standards of the way women are treated in manga. Like why no try to build a mood in fandom where mangaka are held to higher expectations instead of just giving up cuz 'its shonen standard'. Drawing cute girls for teen boys to swoon over is one thing, putting an almost completely naked minor on the cover of ur very popular (and publicly sold like i cant imagine how this will look on BOOKSTORE SHELVES) is another. I also see many ppl bitch about like 'oh ppl who complain the most are those who write explicit bakudeku smut' which like, wild conclusion to some to and probably not true but also i think ppl have to understand that influence of a random fic writer in a fandom (even if a popular one) is Very different from influence of a popular mangaka whos work influences the fandom culture anyway. Like there will be ppl who write freaky shit in every fandom but the mangaka very much sets up the bar there i feel.

Like, Witch Hat Atelier is extremly non sexual manga (aside from Qifrey whos sad and wet) and the only sexual content ive encountered for it was between the two adults in it. There IS a creator there that draws minor x adult explicit stuff (as i said freaks in every fandom) but the only reason i know of them is cuz there were warnings from other users like 'hey this person is posting yxz art tagged under the main manga tag, it can be p upseting so make sure to block them!' its a whole different climate for real.

Why aren't we allowed to hold Mangaka, grown men, accountable for the shit they draw and sell to a wide audience. Why can't I be upset that yet again a female body is being exploited by a grown man for sales.

Yes, she's fictional but that's not the issue! It's an issue that it's okay just because she's female and this has been normalized! Imagine the outrage in public that would have caused if it was Deku in such a pose?! It probably wouldn't be allowed to be printed, let alone on the cover of such a popular magazine that is sold to young boys.

It's because people brush it off that it's everywhere that NOTHING WILL CHANGE. And the argument that fandom creates content just as bad is null. Firstly, a fandom creator who barely gets over 100 views most of the time will NEVER carry the same influence that a man who draws in over 10s of 1000s. Not to mention, it's deflecting the issue. We're not talking about the creation of porn, we're talking about how Hori has exploited the female body, using a character of his that is a minor, for profit as representation for his work.

My question is WHAT DOES THIS COVER DO. It doesn't represent Hagakure as a character nor it doesn't represent his story of heroism. It exists just for people to, frankly, jerk off over. As a fan of BNHA, I don't want what was once one of my favourite stories represented in such a way! I don't want a character to be reduced to this!

If Hori wanted to draw sexy females for young males, he should have created an ecchi manga, not a shonen one. At least then I wouldn't have to see this bullshit with my own eyes and have it supposed to represent something I used to love.

And that's all! I'd rate it a 6.5/10 because it's definitely the weakest of all the sequels but still had amazing animation and some good plot points. It's just really hard to look over the bad stuff enough to rate it any higher.
