I was trying to find information on Nezha, but everything is mainly about his backstory and there's not much else.

Not me getting inspired to create a modern wukong yaoguai hunter gang/mafia style au while having just gotten my feet wet with the JTTW/Black Myth storyline 😭

Imagining Wukong in a golden varsity jacket decorated with a classic black dragon, and a self-stitched "no.1" on it, but being only second in command cause he can't behave himself. The group "leader" will still be Tang Seng, because he's the "big boss's" favorite, and has a good head on his shoulders. He can't fight for shit, but he's got good magic, which is good enough.

They roam the streets as vigilante demon hunters, in comparison to the state sanctioned hunters, whom of course is lead locally by Erlang Shen.

There's always beef between them, but they also always watch out for each other, coming in clutch to help the other out when they least expect it. The two groups would up-end entire cities to get to the other if they're in need.

Shadow of the King is not just about Macaque, I am also putting Sun Wukong through the ringer. Granted, he's already a very tragic character, so why not add more.

Writing his and Macaque's relationship has been interesting because while SWK was like the largest influence in LEMH's life. I wanted his effect on him to be clear, but also that LEMH's actions later are his own at the end of the day no matter how much he blames SWK. I think I have it now how I want it.

Also I figured out how to make all LEMH's crimes in jt/tw canon here, so fun times all around!

Needless to say both characters are several flavors of fucked up after jt/tw which bleeds into LMK later.

For overheating monkeys mainly seek shade staying under trees , increase respiration (panting), seeking water sources. Also some species might shed for a thinner coat during summer. Sweating is an exclusively human thing and why humans have been so successful humans are persistent hunters. We would often follow herds for miles waiting for them to tire and overheat while sweating keeps us perfectly cool. Humans are also the only animal to blush. So. in the AU he's 21 y/o. Meaning that when he arrived to Pigsy door they saw him and went "yeah, he looks around 2/3" and from then they counted on. Buut there's also the thing that he looks a little younger than that age. I wont say anything else.

Courtnapping rooms are made specifically for the courted one, so they are all different. Basically, the room should include everything the courted person would need to live comfortable and also a collection of things they like / to pass the time /love.

It must show that the person courtnapping them is able to provide, care and protect for them. And also knows what makes them happy.

So it can be a huge castle full of jewerly and elegant clothes/ornaments or just a cozy room with some chips and video games.

I think when he's relaxed, the hair is just- a little bit warm, then with his feelings and emotion it can go up to a bigillion degrees, so it's not harmful as long as he can control it.

It’s not impossible that the gang would decide to to utilize some form of restraint after enough troublemaking by Y/N- in place of a leash, though, I imagine that Tang Sanzang would actually use a length of fabric to swaddle Y/N.

And after a little bit of huffing and puffing, you do as requested- and use the 72 Transformation to assume the form of a helpless babe, your mass-displaced form falling snug into his arms.

The Great Monk wraps you in a length of silk that he affixes around his torso and shoulders, leaving your now squishy body squashed against his soft chest.

Not only does this (frankly humiliating) transformation allow Sanzang to sneak you about without scaring any villagers, it also prevents you from running off to cause trouble.

Jokes on him, though- every last bachelorette from the village has one response to a very pretty man bundling around a cute baby:

As for getting kidnapped… yeah, the Journeyfam isn’t putting up with that shit. Not when their master gets snatched up every other day and nearly sautéed and stewed. I mean, operating on the thought that Y/N is very explicitly a demon- horns, fangs, tail, etc- the child has at least some means of self-defense.

If they do get snatched, I can’t imagine there’s a situation where Y/N doesn’t at least leave their assailant battered and scarred, which doesn’t help the demon when three angry demons and a furious dragon break down the door. And Tang Sanzang; to his credit, makes a fair effort to soothe his disciples and quell their fury… but it’s going to be much too late for anyone who decided to lay their hands on the honorary little sibling of all these furious souls.

Outside of kidnapping? I’d like to imagine that Y/N, as a child (potentially female, depending on you or your OC’s gender) in Medieval China, might be eyed up by more… unsavory individuals.

And Sanzang is so genuinely appalled at the simple manner in which genuine slavery is being spoken of here, as though you are a commodity and not a thinking, breathing thing all your own. He offers no retort or reprimand, instead choosing to take you by the hand and hurry off into the crowd- not that Wukong won’t have a few “words” to share with the would-be purchaser.

But that’s not even the worst possible scenario for the gang to face-

No, the worst is proposed child marriage.

All it takes is one rich man/woman to decide that they want an “exotic” spouse, and that the little demon child with a pair of magical restraints is their “safest” way to get it.

I don’t even think Sanzang would have time to comprehend what his disciples were doing before it was over- he’s too busy reeling over being offered literal bricks of gold in return for an actual child.

And obviously his answer is a hundred firm “nos” and a dozen chants of “go to your nearest monastery and pray!”, each one delivered with increasing fervor…

Or, it would be- if his disciples hadn’t solved the matter themselves before he had regained the use of his tongue.

As part of my rabbit hole into Jttw, I've been looking at more and more monkey-related articles and science topics. I am an irl biology undergrad. It's my thing.

And I noticed a lot of focus in the LMK fandom on Macaque's scarf.

In the Harry Harlow monkey experiments (tw for distressing stuff) one trait that would frequently occur is that "orphan" macaques would become emotionally attached to pieces of cloth/towels. Even with the presence of a "wire mother" that provided endless food, the baby macaques would cling to bundles of cloth to simulate being held by their mothers. In experiments where the baby was provided a "cloth mother" that had no milk to give, they would still cling even if it meant starvation. If the researchers attempted to remove the cloths, the babies would panic and lash out. Those whose cloth was removed actually died from grief. The reason is simple; it was literally their security blanket.

Btw; These experiments weren't done out of cruelty. There was a really damaging parenting belief during the 1950s that believed that babies should be held as little as possible, less they become "spoiled" from too much contact. Harlow's team was able to prove that yes, you need frequent positive physical contact to survive/thrive as a baby.

The cloth-clinging can also be seen in macaques raised by humans that don't understand their instinctual need to cling. Even when dumped in the wild, former "pets" will cling to their security blanket like their life depends on it. Because it really does.

SO I had a thought;

What if Macaque's red scarf is his security blanket? His "cloth mother"? It being one of the few comforts he had as a baby monkey? Or even the only memento of a life before the Brotherhood? A simple piece of cloth that holds more value to him than all the treasures of Heaven?

I've seen ideas/headcanons that the handkerchief he wears on his armour in the Brotherhood-era is actually his trademarked scarf, and that he began wearing it more loosely because Wukong hasn't been adjusting it for him. Since we don't see an earlier form of Macaque, he is literally almost never seen without his red scarf, save for glamours and at the beach in S4.

Macaque, who tries his best to be a self-sufficient loner, getting panicked when he can't find his scarf or when it becomes damaged. Wukong learned a long time ago not to touch the scarf without permission, and was only allowed to interact with it when Mac was in a good mood.

And you know who else is a monkey with a piece of red cloth that they're never seen without?

You touch MK's bandana - you die. I believe it was likely Tang and/or Pigsy who used the cloth to keep the hair out of the baby's face, and MK psychologically attached to it as a form of comfort. He's not evne sure why he's so attached to it.

did you know that macaque's staff has a name in jttw too? It's called the "acquiescent staff of iron"/ “Acquiescent Iron Pole Arm” (随心铁杆兵, "Suíxīn tiěgǎn bīng"), or Tùy Tâm Thiết Can Binh in vnese. It clearly mirrors wukong's staff in name, the “As-You-Will Gold-Banded Staff” (Ruyi Jingu Bang), or Như Ý Kim Cô Bổng.

Now here's me being crazy based on the vnese translation alone, do NOT think of this as truth but there's at least a smidge of sense in my rambling because vietnamese is very close to chinese due to our history (the fancy names above and our old literature used a kind of phonetic translation of chinese called Hán Việt) and the meaning of chinese words more or less can be inferred by our Hán Việt version:

So the word "Như Ý" in wukong's staff name in almost only used in the phrase/blessing "Vạn sự như ý" in modern vnese, which means "may all things go your way/according to your wishes". Meanwhile, the phrase "Tùy Tâm" is used when asked about some sort of favor, for example a charity when asking for your donation will ask you to give an amount "according to your heart".

You see it right? "Như Ý" is more passive, you wish for it but not necessary go out of your way to achieve it, and "Tùy Tâm" being used in situations where your own conscience/empathy is judged, it demands you to actively question yourself to make an action. I've decided the names can play into mtwgo shadowpeach's mental states. Wukong wants freedom but afraid to pursue it at the cost of his sworn brotherhood, while macaque has always assessed the effort it takes to join in a fight, but ultimately he decided to go through all that hardship to right this wrong.

Furthermore, "Ý" means thoughts/ideas/will, which is one of the reasons the book has wukong store his staff in his ear/take the staff out of his "head", "Tâm" means heart in its literal sense and feelings in a slightly more abstract sense, so thats why i have macaque pull his shadow staff from the magic core in his chest. Fun detail isnt it? :3c

One more thing is that theres a chinese saying that goes like "mind-monkey, will-horse" (Tâm Viên Ý Mã) so Tâm -> Mind is also a very wukong thing. That says, in mtwgo macaque's staff/ his strength to fight is summoned to serve wukong :)

The altered form of wukong's staff that macaque gonna use in mtwgo will be called Suixin Jingu Bang (As-You-Feel Gold-Banded Staff or Tùy Tâm Kim Cô Bổng), combining macaque's resolve/loyalty and wukong's strength. When he swings that staff with its body painted in his own color, his victims will also know wukong's might when the golden glint of its ends becomes the last thing they see.

Erlang Shen—A Playful Free Spirit Pt. 1

Many might already know that Erlang (二郎) means the second son. Historically, Erlang Shen has also been referred to as Langjun Shen. The term, Langjun (郎君), initially served as a title for young aristocrats beginning their careers in the bureaucratic system. Over time, it became more generalized, used to respectfully address any young lord and affectionately by young women when referring to their husbands or lovers.

This both reflected and shaped Erlang's image in folk tradition. Since "Lang (jun)" carries a strongly positive connotation and evokes admiration, Erlang is often depicted as a handsome young man with a majestic presence. Wu Cheng'en, the author of JTTW, wrote a poem titled Tribute to the Erlang Searching the Mountains (for Yaoguai) Painting (《二郎搜山图歌》), which is believed to have inspired his later novel, where he introduced Erlang as:

The young and elegant Lord of Qingyuan*, Leads his troops, raising the mystic wind. 少年都美清源公， 指挥部从扬灵风。 *Qingyuan (清源) is Erlang's main title in Daoism. Both characters are water-related and implies clarity/purity.

As a protector god, Erlang is seen as caring, generous, and dependable. However, as a young lord, he is also thought to be carefree and playful. The latter likely explains why he became the patron god of various artistic and leisure activities. In Black Myth: Wukong, Wukong remarks in the intro that, besides Bajie, Erlang is the best at talking nonsense and making him laugh (the literal translation of the Chinese line for the English dub "All these years, except for that pig, you're the one who talked the tallest tale. Good, I'm entertained"). Who knows—maybe Wukong was telling the truth here under the disguise of a jab.

Erlang's carefree and playful nature is a perpetual theme in Chinese literary tradition. In a 1207 C.E. inscription dedicated to him (《平定县昭惠灵显王感应碑记》), Erlang is described as:

Naturally fond of roaming free, with transformations that follow no fixed pattern. 性好游逸，变化无方。

Around the same period, a tribute poem for Erlang (《灌口二郎歌》) described him as:

A fine young man in yellow robes and a silk hat, Fierce like a starving tiger cornered in mountains and valleys. Not interested in staying close to the political center, He roams the enchanting mountains of the southwest border. 黄衫纱帽佳少年，炯然饿虎穷山渊。 不居秦鹿祖龙畔，却走碧鸡金马边。 ... At times, he shoots slings beyond the evening clouds, Or plays Cuju [ball game] in the spring breeze. Other times, he dons a red scarf, And searches for immortals (hidden) in the medicine market. In character he certainly resembles Li Bai*, In pursuit of the Dao he is committed as Ge Zhichuan. 有时挟弹暮云表，有时蹴踘春风前。 有时却自着绛帕，走入药市寻神仙。 为人定似李太白，学道定似葛稚川。 ... *Li Bai is a renowned Chinese poet famous for his free-spirited nature, poetic genius, and love of travel and alcohol.

Perhaps because Erlang's character has inspired countless artists and his stories have long been told through folk drama, Tang Xianzu, one of the most prominent Chinese playwrights of the 16th—17th centuries, referred to Erlang as the patron god of drama/opera, and said:

[He] is kind, and [he] attains the Daoist way through playful spontaneity. 为人美好，以游戏而得道。

This characterization of Erlang Shen is seen in JTTW as well. Wukong's second encounter with him takes place when the group is struggling against the Yaoguais of the Lake Bibo. Erlang somehow is nearby on a hunting trip with his Mei Mount brothers. A bit embarrassed by their first encounter, Wukong has Bajie ask for Erlang's assistance. Erlang is only delighted to see Wukong again and is more than happy to help. He invites the group to rest at his place first before the rematch the next day, even thoughtfully providing food and drinks that comply with Buddhist dietary restrictions. Then as Wu Cheng'en puts it:

The brothers gathered under the starlight and moon, with the sky as their canopy and the earth as their mat, raising their cups and reminiscing about the past. Just as loneliness makes the long night feel endless, the joys of reunion make the night feel too short. Girl i will never recover from this chapter. the whole "gilyoung is jealous of yoosung" and "gilyoung would also put his life on the line and sign a contract with his sponsor to protect yoosung" breaks my heart and im just AUGHHHH SCREAMS

and now I will ramble about sys and lgy under the cut.

THEY MEAN EVERYTHING TO ME. have you guys ever realised how gilyoung was growing to become so fucked up in the beginning of the story? killing monsters and even people without batting an eye, offering to dokja to leave him behind, and even sangah and dokja were genuinely worried about his development. (sangah telling him she'll kill and he doesn't need to kill anything) and the one thing that sort of grounds gilyoung from this taking over his growth is when shin yoosung joins the party

its only after she joins that he's able to act his age like a lil kid, bickering and fighting and just... aughhh,, THEY ONLY HAVE EACH OTHER AS FRIENDS FROM THE SAME AGE OKAY... like having friends your age is so important when you're a kid, they literally stay together all the time. and they argue a lot but they defend each other and hold each others hands whenever the other needs help.

its SO fucking wholesome. NOT TO MENTION, yoosung was the reason gilyoung signed a contract with his sponsor in the jttw arc, (it was never specified why but i think he did it so she would survive and save dokja? Or like so he could have the power to fend off the enemies on his own and keep them occupied away from sys. Maybe I'll go reread that part again) the whole yellow aura thing yknow. and im like half certain they picked up the idiot-calling from like yjh kdj and hsy calling each other bastard stupid and idiot all the time...its kinda funny..

anyway. they make me so ill. SO ILL.
