Mojave reads X-Men: X-Men #1, X-Men #2, and Tales of Suspense #49

That's right gang, I'm finally sitting down and reading some comics. Now I've attempted to read a manga or two in my life, I've read some tintin comics in the library as a little kid, I've read an Alan Moore graphic novel in my day, but never have I actually read a serialized, long running comic series like this. I have very limited vocabulary for talking about comic books, and my experience with superhero media is pretty much limited to movies and shows. I have never read or critiqued a comic book of any kind.

Now I should say that even though I don't really give a shit or fuck about superheros, I do have a favorite superhero, and it's none of the X-Men. I do have a place in my heart for the caped crusader, so why am I not reading every single batman comic ever written? Well you see, the reason is simple. If I read a batman comic, even if it's a bad one, I will be distracted by how much i already like batman. I will probably learn a thing or two about batman, but I won't really be properly immersed in the comic-reading experience if i start with somebody I already enjoy.

So I'm excited for this! I'm basically going in blind, except for some passing knowledge about the over-arching themes of these characters and season one of X-Men '97 (a fantastic show that you all gotta watch). Now I know some reading guides online will recommend that you skip some stuff, but I wanna challenge myself to do a completionist review of this whole series. For an artistic medium that I don't know shit or fuck about, this may be a long commitment, but this is gonna be a fun way to do it.

X-Men #1

This one is really fucking stupid.

In this first issue, we meet our X-Men and learn their powers through a goofy ass training scene, Jean Grey arrives, then they defend a military base from Magneto, and that's about it. It doesn't do enough to establish what exactly a mutant is, but it does establish the X academy as a safe haven for mutants where they can learn to be superheros, and how Magneto wants mutants to rule the world. There isn't much nuance here yet, but these motivations will echo down throughout the entire X-Men saga.

The designs here are particularly undercooked compared to the more modern iterations, but I do like that Professor X has always been a bald dude stuck in a chair. Magneto's imperious personality is established here as well, but the X-Men themselves are mostly just rough sketches of the idea of people. We're not gonna get into the family drama soap opera nonsense for a little while I think.

(Also my favorite part of this panel is how you can't tell cyclops has a visor and it looks like it's just a guy. With two eyes. Which is, by definition, not a cyclops.)

I also adore how whimsical this first issue is. The fighting is very cartoonish and everyone says what they're thinking out loud. I dunno if that's just how comics tend to be or if this is a product of the age, but I actually find it really endearing! I have a fondness for this era of comics where you could pick up a batman off the shelves and see a panel of him shooting and killing his enemies with a mosin nagant, or that infamous panel of superman melting a dagger with his heat vision and slurping up the molten metal.

Also, poor Jack Kirby. You can tell by the homogenous designs and Magneto's crooked ass eyeballs that he was very overworked in this period. The superhero team composition here is definitely less creative than the Fantastic Four for instance, which was running at the same time and will crossover with our reading list a few times.

Either way, while this first one isn't very good, I was really entertained. I'm really looking forward to immersing myself in this period of the art form and learning a thing or two about this franchise!

X-Men #2

That's right baby. We're gonna be in stupid town for a few weeks.

In this issue, a new evil mutant attempts to take on the X-Men and realize his loosely sketched evil plan for world domination and such. This guy, The Vanisher, has teleportation powers so fast that none of them can lay a finger on him. With his X-Men's reputation on the line, Professor X himself has to step in and use his psychic powers to vanquish The Vanisher and his army of goons on the White House lawn.

We learn a lot of new things about the X-Men in this issue; one, that Charles is a snitch for the FBI; two, sometimes the X-Men will just randomly start fighting each other almost completely unprompted.

Oh yeah also they call Jean Grey "Marvel Girl" in this run. I don't know why, ya just gotta deal with it.

The Vanisher basically has Goku instant transmission, allowing him to teleport literally anywhere he wants in an instant. In his master plan to steal US Army secrets and rule over humanity, a bunch of random low level goons just start worshiping him cause he's just that awesome. Like they're not even getting anything out of serving him, they just love this freak.

God could you imagine the alternate timeline where The Vanisher is the X-Men's arch enemy instead of Magneto? I think I would've canceled this series early if that happened.

Needless to say, this one is also insane. Like whenever the X-Men need to go anywhere, they rely on the goofiest modes of flying transportation that I've ever seen.

This one is also pretty dumb, but I can't say I had a bad time reading this one too! I think the first one was more interesting, seeing the prototype for such an all time comic villain, but this fight against the Vanisher is just a straight forward good time.

Tales of Suspense #49

Here we have our first ever crossover! In this comic, Angel accidentally gets nuked by Iron Man during a weapons test. The radiation makes him turn evil. Iron Man has to stop him.

This is the goofy bullshit I crave. There is no explanation for why any of this happens. Angel suddenly swears his life against all crime fighters and tries to make friends with the evil mutants. Iron Man talks completely different than I'm used to in this modern MCU era (plus his identity actually is secret!) Although the other X-Men do show up in this one, It is so strange to me that the first X-Man to make it into another series is one of the most forgotten characters of them all.

Oh man they just. They just don't make em like this anymore.

I do like that the X-Men as characters are starting to settle into their personalities. Angel's the boyscout, (normally,) Iceman is a little shit, Beast is a funnyguy, and Jean is a woman. Cyclops is still a little undercooked, but in terms of actual art I think I like how he looks in this style better than anybody. It helps that the art is getting ever so slightly better issue by issue.

But I also love that there's like. No backgrounds. It's crazy that in these early comics they just frame characters in a blank, colored void. I have no idea where these guys are right now.

The writing is still hilarious. Like everyone in these comics just says whatever they're thinking out loud. If these comics weren't written for little kids I'd make a big stink about it, but I just find this so endearing.

Eventually Iron Man does the thing where his power runs out and he falls to the earth in the middle of the fight, then Angel comes back to his senses, possessed by the instinct to save him. As he flies away, good ol' Anthony Edward Stark gets a call from Professor X saying that some day he hopes that the Avengers and the X-Men will one day fight alongside each other...as allies! And from this day forward, they'll never fight again!

Um. Ignore that.

Ok so Apple released it's 100 Greatest Albums list a while ago and I scoffed at it, but after watching some youtubers whine about it in different ways, I realized I hadn't given it the fairest shake. I haven't listened to every album on it and a lot of stuff I have listened to I haven't listened to in a long while. So, I'm gonna listen to every album featured and decide how I feel about them. And for fun y'all get small quick reviews.

Starting off, here's part one of my reviews.

I decided to start with Adele's 21. Not for any special reason other than it seemed like it might be nice to listen to in the shower. Adele has a great, powerful voice, but the album has two song archetypes that just get repeated. The songs are mostly competent so individually they're fine, but together as an album they make a very boring experience. Also, I recognized Rumor Has It from a commercial or something, I fucking hate that song. Docked extra points for having that song. This album doesn't belong on the list at all to me, and even if we are throwing a bone to the modern 2010s-2020s artists, she definitely doesn't deserve number 15. A ridiculous placement.

I decided to take on Drake's Take Care and hey guys, does Drake make any other songs? Why do they all sound the same? Does he do anything other than sad boy shit? Of the three Drake releases I've now listened to, this one is easily the best one. I didn't hate the experience, for that Drake deserves some kudos. But, I don't think there's anyway to view Drake positively in 2024. Maybe in 2011 this seemed special, but in 2024 I can easily say that this does not deserve to be on this list, let alone at 47. Giving Drake a pity placement is fine, but not in the top 50.

I have never understood the love that Hotel California garners. Like, the song is good, but it's not earth shattering, and the rest of the album is pretty typical rock for the era. There is just so little content that I haven't got much to say, it's competent enough to not be laughably bad, but it's also so run of the mill there's no highlights. Picking it for a list like this is what I'd call a safe option, not a real option.

I'll be frank, I'm not very familiar with Robyn or Body Talk, so maybe I don't have context on how important this album was to the history of the genre or music at large. Though, to my ear, the album bounces between having wonderful dance pop tracks to having some really boring, repetitive tracks. Still, not the worst album here (not even the worst in this post), it's just hard for me to really gauge how deserving it is for this list.

Probably an album with an unfair advantage, I've been listening to RATM since I was a kid. My favorite Rage album is definitely The Battle of Las Angeles, but I'm not dumb enough to say that should be on the list. Still think Evil Empire had greater music and potentially greater reach than the self titled, but this being here isn't bad. Just a shame it's only at 97.

Did enjoy this a quite a bit. However, musically speaking it feels incredibly one note. This belongs in the top 100 albums ever? Did it really have that level of cultural inspiration? I'm not mad at it being included, not even mad it's at 96, but for it to be in a better spot than the self titled RATM album? Incredibly stupid.

Probably a dumb thing to say, but this is what I expected Drake's album to be like? Fun music and fun lyrics about being a sad boy, a lover boy, and being too playful with women. Honestly, the only reason it gets such low ratings is consistently Usher says shit like this

GET IT?! IT'S CONFESSION PART II, SO HE SAYS PART TWO OF MY CONFESSION!! SOOOO CLEVER come on man. Does it belong on the best 100 list? I don't know. Let someone else decide that.

I have no issue with either of this being on the list, being in the 90s, or any real thoughts to give. Burial isn't quite my vibe musically so I got nothing to say, and Solange is great so it's like. It's cool they're there, no thoughts.

I don't have an issue with George Michael being on this list, but this album? I vibe Faith far more.

Flower Boy by Tyler the Creator is absolutely one of my favorite albums. I'd have imagined that Apple would have chosen Igor, since it's the one people universally seem to adore, but I'm happy Flower Boy is getting love. Flower Boy is my favorite from Tyler and it has special meaning in my heart, so any praise the album can get.

Look, if you're picking AC/DC albums to put on a list, then this is probably the correct pick, but why would you put AC/DC on the top 100 Albums of all Time list? I don't even think they'd qualify for the Top 100 Hard Rock Albums from before the 2000s list! Is it cuz of the Iron Man soundtrack? It's gotta be right?

This is probably my most unpopular opinion: Lady Gaga is overrated as hell. I do not understand what people in 2009 saw in these songs and I still don't get it now. Maybe it belongs on this Top 100 Albums List cuz it had some kind of cultural impact, I mean her music was inescapable for a time. But, I don't get it, I wouldn't put it on my list, and Bad Romance is absolutely one of the most annoying pop songs the radio has ever played.

And, to conclude this long ass pointless post, I'll just jump ahead again to end this on an album I enjoy.

I don't get the weird revisionism that happens around Kid A. I do love it to death, but when it came out it was critically hated. It just feels like everyone treats this as the greatest triumph in music, when the only people that have heard it are Radiohead fans and the weird hipster that tries to act smarter than you in music. Oh well, it's Captain America's favorite album so I guess it works.

I guess more of the issue is Radiohead is one of like, three or four artists on this list that gets more than one spot. Why waste a spot on Kid A at 33 when you have Ok Computer at 12, let some other unnamed artist be on the list instead.

Neither Kid A or OK Computer are my favorite Radiohead albums, but hey, I like Kid A. It's one of four albums I listen to when trying to fall asleep at night, so it's nice to see mentioned I guess.

Lisztober #11: Symphonie Fantastique

Madness has taken hold at the Maidchen court. What always comes across as so easy here, is a real challenge, which unfortunately also takes its toll. I now have a real coffee problem by now, so I sometimes have heart palpitations at night. Then there's the incredible time pressure to present you with something cool that has to be ready in less than 24 hours.

If anyone asks why we're sitting in a three-person cell in a asylum by November, tell them it's because of absinthe, reading too much Lautréamont and hysteria. Please.

And that brings us right back to today's topic. Yesterday we escalated. Really. So much so that one girl is hoarse and the other is on the verge of tinnitus. Additionaly, one of our speakers died due to the volume and overdrive. Here you can listen a true masterpiece by Maidchen standards. We had to stop in between, because of laughing over and over, again and again. Both while writing and during the recording itself. Even while cutting. And even more so when the neighbor simply started practicing the tuba for unknown reasons. I didn't even know he had a tuba. It must be new. Totally surreal. But luckily, he didn't call the police on us. And you wouldn't believe how many takes we “indulged” in. (There were 26. 26!) I hope we can convey these moments of pure joy. PLEASE LISTEN TO THE WHOLE SONG TO GET THE VIBE! ;)

The reason for this was our contribution for today, Berlioz “Symphonie Fantastique” aka probably the creepiest piece of classical music that has ever existed. And thank you so much, @franzliszt-official for giving us this opportunity.

So, here’s our plot summary:

We really always wanted to write something about this masterpiece of brainf***, but unfortunately we didn't have the right idea - and you see: With a gun to your head, even the muse must speed up. Let’s see how far we can go with this. The plot of the symphony - just like the story before and after it - is so obscure that it has become a kind of running gag for us. Life (and art) can't write better stories. Never ever. And before I tell you the whole story, if you don't know it yet: there's a wonderful YouTube video with a short summary that I highly recommend you watch (the whole channel is amazing!!!). WTF, Berlioz, really, WTF.

Oh well, it's still about Liszt. Liszt was a huge fan (Really, Franz. I love you, but why? WHY?) of this symphony, just like Wagner (but nobody here give a shit about Richard‘s opinion anyway)  Franz may not have been directly involved in the creation of the “Symphonie Fantastique”, but his piano transcription and his interpretations made a significant contribution to this work becoming one of the most important works of Romantic music. Liszt made it accessible to a wider audience, interpreted it and developed it further, thus having a lasting influence on music history.

That's why we originally wanted to deal with the “Dies Irae” theme, but let's be honest… everything stinks against the main story.

And then there is the “Idée fixe”, the central theme of Berlioz's symphony, the beloved, who appears again and again musically as a motif and ultimately drives him mad. You could also apply this to the Maidchen. Fun fact: 97% of all our lyrics have a hidden hint to Franz. Sometimes so well that Lacelove doesn't even notice ;) Whoever finds them all: Get in touch. Feeling ugly after being brutally discarded: I feel so small

This older lady, I’ve known all my life, not gonna share her name. She’s an awesome, awesome lady, but one day I was running a brush through my hair and she saw me and she just stared at me and I looked at her and she said, “ You are so beautiful, brushing your beautiful hair” 😭😭😭😭😭😭

I was so uncomfortable because of the way I’ve been objectified so many times by men, especially by people that I loved so much that made me feel so stupid . I’ve lost so much weight without trying and everybody has been talking about it and asking me what’s wrong and why am I losing weight and they all wanna know and people tell me I’m too skinny and how that’s so bad but it wasn’t even my fault. 😔 You know, it’s not like I did this to myself on purpose. I acknowledge that I was completely unaware of toxic relationships and emotional abuse!! I trusted my exes and gave them all of me that I could even when they’re giving me nothing but pain!!

So far in this healing journey, it is mental and spiritual, but there is a physical side to it as well. I know the physical side probably won’t get better until the mental does, and the mental is dependent on the spiritual as well. It all works together, body soul and mind !!

I don’t hate my exes. I’m just disappointed at how they can brutally discard me 💔 I’m so disposable to them when they were extremely special to me… Starting with my ex Cody, oh my gosh, the way I felt for him hurts me so much. I can’t put into words how painful it was when he ghosted me and he’ll never care about me ❤️‍🩹 I’ve had to let that go and I’ve had to accept that he does not care …. the way he treated me when he love bombed me wow. I’ll never forget it. 😭

Then to spend a year with my ex Andrew after to think I’m falling in love with him, yet after I break up with him, he says that he pretended all his feelings the whole time to lead me on, and he already had a new girlfriend that he was posting all over Instagram 💀💀💀 and he never posted me on his Instagram once !!! plus he took her to the place that I thought he would take me one day 💔 and that sucks. I just felt incredibly stupid and embarrassed by him…. I wasn’t special to Andrew or Cody at all. I’ve had to face that all year and it’s been sooooo painful.

I know there is people that loves and cares about me but it’s just so hard anymore to believe it. Alsooooo, there is a man in my past named Jake that I’ve not wanted to write about as much because I don’t feel safe to write about him yet, but I dreamt about him last night and I never really wanted to be his girlfriend although we flirted a lot, but he was always a part of my life … he was basically a big bully to me, but also there was times I thought he was my good friend too, so that’s confusing and that’s just how it is with these men. They say one thing and then turn around and say another too and you never know how they really feel about you. 🤨😝 You can’t trust them ever. They make you feel delusional about everything. They’re basically gaslighting you. ❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹❤️‍🩹 They’re jealous and intimidated by you so they mentally and emotionally abuse you to make themselves feel better. Fudge … I loved them better than I loved myself. They never deserved it, my love was free but they scoffed at my love and thats THERE PROBLEM, not mine… I don’t regret them but I have to admit how they’ve impacted my self worth and opinions of myself. I have to accept what they’ve done and forgive ❤️‍🩹 (doesn’t seem I can ever forget tho)

Thankfully, we have an a/c unit set up in the bedroom, and it does a good job of cooling off my sewing room when I also have my little swamp/evaporative cooler set up and running as well. The latter is on a shelf and pointed directly at where I stand when cutting fabric.

I'm really looking forward to the wet season. Sure, cold humidity can be miserable, but that's what quilts and thick slipper socks are for. During the summer, you can be completely naked and still too hot and miserable.

This week is busy with doctor appointments and other necessary things. By Friday, I will be completely peopled out.

This week, my work focus is on the 17 piece commission. My hope is to have at least half the placemat tops done this week. Coaster tops will be made using extra blocks, and I think I made an excess of blocks. Any blocks left after these will likely be used for a wallhanging, hot pads, or a mini quilt, and that will be listed in the shop after it's finished. Depending on the size, I may add a hanging sleeve to the back for easy hanging if I end up making a wallhanging.

Next week, I would really like to have the entire set completed. Machine quilting speeds things along nicely, but what will slow me down will the medical things that will be happening. Oh, and finishing the binding because that's done by hand. I attach it to the front with machine sewing, but the back is done by hand because it simply looks better that way.

There are three commission slots left! They're closing November 1st or when all slots are taken. In November, I begin making a stack of quilt tops to practice free motion quilting. In December, I'll likely begin practicing because there will be at least half a dozen quilt tops, and no commissions to finish. If you know you want to commission me for something large, like a twin or queen size quilt, I recommend you start saving now. Next Spring, probably in April, those will be added to the commission list. Though keep an eye on the shop; you may find a listing that meets the criteria of what you're looking for.

some confirmation that the new mage has a similarly aloof and misanthropic world view as other mages we already know. it doesnt matter if humans get eaten because its all toward a desirable end. reminds me very much of kyokos "the familiars eat the weak humans and turn into witches, then we eat those witches" speech. this coldness makes me think chise might be in a spot of trouble if they really earnestly try to recruit her again, or that elias may be able to have some self-satisfaction from knowing all along that their intentions are not pure

okay so zoey was feeling bad because he was going birdmode. i guess when titania did whatever she did to him in chapter 99 it jumpstarted a sort of evolutionary process. strikes me as the sort of thing a creature like her would do. i imagine this will cause maximum ride-esque problems for him in public. he will have to wear a trench coat. you look like youre about to tell your friend not to come to school tomorrow. etc.

"atavism, atavism" ... the last time we heard that mentioned was from yori in 98. maybe warming us up for whatever this is? i have to wonder what the point of this small wing growth plot is. a result of heightened chaotic magic in the country?

this chapter takes place on my birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! seems fitting too, this chapter feels like "things are about to change, right fucking now," so having this all happen on the last day of the year feels right

elias is capable of bridal-carrying someone who isnt chise but hes tangentially linked to chise so it doesnt really count

a precious few pages dedicated to the fact that joseph may have at one point known how or why elias was "made." the type of creature he is is a "shadowborn," but this feels like a new translation of something that used to be called something different. elias notes that fae call him "shadowborn" as well. is this a reinterpretation of "half-made" or similar phrases?

Lost in the cloud, chapter 102-103 analysis

After chapter 101, we see that Skylar runs away after beating cirrus unconscious, rushing to go to class, in which Cirrus follows to class, and then has a panic attack in front of the board, after the teacher calls him up to answer a problem, which seems pretty stupid to others, but Skylar next to him notices, yet he acts indifferent despite knowing exactly why cirrus had a panic attack. Later, we see Skylar walking home from cram school, when he gets a call from cirrus, and to my surprise, he actually picks up, and cirrus says one of my favorite lines from him so far, “you don’t need to like me, but I’ll wait until you do.” I think skylar was a it surprised by this, so he asked where cirrus was and guess what? He was in fact, right behind him. Next part was prolly the most shocking considering they skipped all sort of communication and just started making out. Anyways there wasn’t a lot to talk about this chapter except for the fact that they had just completely skipped over all communication. And reminder that Skylar wasn’t gonna act violently is chapter 101 until cirrus brought up minwoo. This fact and the fact that they skipped all communication I think plays another part of their characters. Because of Skylar’s trauma, which made him very vulnerable and afraid of affection, which is basically the answer to why cirrus had already told Skylar about his past yet Skylar hadn’t. Now to put it in a different perspective, imagine in chapter 96 if it had been a person from Skylar’s past rather than Cirrus’s obviously, Skylar wouldn’t have been as willing to open up about his past given his backstory, which made him afraid of love versus cirrus’s backstory, which made him deprived and desperate of affection, which is basically why the entire relationship up to now has been completely initiated by Cirrus, and as I had predicted before, this would have brought up many issues in the future, which we see in chapter 101. And the thing is, even through the entire book, Skylar had mixed emotions about his relationship with Cirrus, which I don’t know why I hadn’t seen in the past, probably because there was never really a clear indication in which Skylar began enjoying Cirrus’s companionship. Anyway, when exactly did this miscommunication begin? Like I’ve stated in my analysis of chapter 101, I blame this on the events of chapter 97, where it all went wrong. Where Cirrus became obsessed with Skylar and where his jealousy of Chan-I’ll began to resurface. We see more of this miscommunication in chapter 103, which I’m not going to touch upon as much because the majority of it was them being all lovey dovey kissy kissy and sleeping with each other the first time like what the freak dude was that really necessary?

TheLreads, Vigilantes ch 97, Replies Part 1

1) “Now it is time to return to our headache, it’s a vigilantes chapter! We’re about to the see the humiliation of tensei (I fucking love tensei) by the hands of Koichi. Let us see how many seconds this high-speed chase will take, on Chapter 97: Pursuers”- About 10, if we’re not counting the failed talk-down attempt Tensei made which took longer than the actual pursuit.

2) “And look at that, it’s the emissary of hell himself. Alright Koichi, you don’t even know what’s coming your way, but trust me, you’re not gonna like it”- Not even just dealing with the usually-competent Tensei, it seems Koichi’s also gotta deal with most of the top pros out hunting him, hamstrung as they may be by Furuhashi’s writing.

3) “Ok… This is not the neighborhood, because everyone in there knows Koichi vigilante name, but this imply that he’s well-known enough outside of Naruhata? Right. I hope I’m merely misinterpretating this.”- Koichi’s fame appears to have been spreading by his more visible acts of do-gooding, but that’s also the same reason he’s being chased right now, having gained a rep for both good and bad reasons. I guess we could have seen more of this in prior chapters if the series had lasted longer.

4) “Dammit Koichi, pay attention, we don’t want to add vehicular manslaughter to your criminal record.”- ….does Koichi himself now count as a high-speed vehicle when he’s in motion? Like, he could always compete with them, but would a collision still be filed under “bodily harm” if he ran over somebody?

AND HE’S ALREADY BEING A NARC TELLING KOICHI TO SLOW DOWN, BASTARD WANTS TO GIVE HIM A TICKET”- Koichi’s casually broken more speeding laws than hero laws, and now it’s all catching up to him….literally.

6) “Now Tensei, although I fucking love you, I have a feeling that Koichi does not feel the same to trust you. You know, it’s not like there was almost three years of story to show you two being friends and bonding while jogging to justify this

but then again, nothing important happened on that timeskip”- I’m starting to feel like the words “three-year timeskip” will become your version of the “Bat credit Card” skit whenever somebody brings it up….so I hope your sister continues to mention it at every opportunity

7) “And Koichi of course doesn’t trust him, because being honest, why should him? From what we know they met like, twice, this has all the emotional impact of two acquaintances by name meeting after three years.”- I appreciate Koichi having the brains to not immediately turn himself in to the official heroes, but still not casting off his goodwill with them by continuing to flee, instead taking on a third choice of using the truck to maintain his escape velocity whilst also letting him have a conversation with Tensei and letting him argue his case. Even if it was a doomed attempt, Koichi isn’t as Pro-vigilante as Soga, Knuckles and the others (ironically) and does want to believe in and trust the official heroes. It’s just that this time, the stakes are too high and personal for him to take that chance, so however reluctantly, he’s gotta break the law to keep their illegal operation running until Pop’s safety is secured. 8) “Don’t even waste saliva Tensei, he won’t stop, the fact you allowed him to roam free for those last three years don’t necessarily mean much much considering that every single hero in town also never batted an eye to him, even though he technically is famous.”-  Everybody being willing to let Koichi “play hero” does make them mighty hypocritical now the situation’s turned dire enough they need to step in and preform actual hero work in his stead. In that respect, Fires Georg actually kept the correct attitude up towards Koichi the entire time. 9) “Can you, Tensei? Can you really? Because I wonder for how long you would be able to.

Here’s the thing, why don’t you prove you’re capable of by catching Koichi first? If you can’t catch a single measly Vigilante, what shot you have of protecting Pop from a villain?”-  Koichi’s rise in competency against (furuhashi-nerfed) heroes does unfortunately highlight Soga’s point about how their group is needed on this operation, because if the heroes aren’t capable of stopping Koichi, then Nomura will easily penetrate their defences – and the fact that there’s multiple heroes in play hero only increases his chances, because we’ve seen how expertly he infiltrated that big hero operation against Bee Pop.

10) “Yeah see, this was a good reason for not trusting the cops and the heroes but it pains me to have to swallow the fact it’s once again Soga being the voice of reason.”- At this point, what’s one more pain to the list? Might as well grin and bear it, cause we sure aren’t getting a sudden switch over to Bakugo being Koichi’s helper, funny as that would have been. 11) “Also, he probably could’ve already done that if he wanted, I think he’s planning something. That’s the only explanation for him not going up a building and then legging it the opposite way since you can’t do sharp turns easily.”- Since a lot of heroes, especially pros, tend to use Ariel support or parkouring around the city rooftops to get around whilst on patrol, Koichi going up high only makes him a visible target and puts him in their preferred hunting grounds, as shown by both Edgeshot and best Jeanist, whose ability let them semi-spiderman their way around. Sticking to the dark streets lets Koichi move quickly and mostly undetected, but with Tensei covering the ground he’s forced to go high or order to avoid the net.

12) “Huh, guys, a net? He can jump over it

and even if that fucking creppy-ass girl tries I doubt she’s fast enough to catch him 

what is going on”- Tensei and his sidekicks are cutting off Koichi’s avenues on escape on the gorund whilst letting other, more mid-air capable heroes monitor the area from above in case Koichi tries to go vertical as an escape. Demonstrating teamwork and trust even between different groups of heroes, just like a proper Pro should.

13) “And there he goes… Yeah, I knew that would be the case, they didn’t even stood a chance

Really, no air support to intercept him even though everyone by now knows he can jumps around and is just a minute away from actually being able to fly. I retract my statement Tensei, turns out you are an idiot.”- Tensei’s group is highly-skilled at cooperating in large-scale operations on a level ground floor, but we’ve not really seen many of them that can fly well, if at all. In which case, Tensei’s ok with allowing other pros who have skills that cover that gap to step in to subdue Koichi if words or force won’t convince him to submit. It’s honestly not that different from the kinda tactics Izuku’s pulled off with 1A and their varied abilities before, showing how success requires more than one superhero who’s capable of covering all possible types of situation. 14) “TENSEI PLEASE DID YOU SERIOUSLY CAME ALL THIS WAY TO CATCH HIM AND YOU DIDN’T EVEN BOTHERED TO GET SOME INTEL ON WHAT HE CAN DO NOW?

HE WAS INVOLVED IN THE SKY EGG AND FIRES GEORG RAMPAGE, THE HEROES SHOULD HAVE KNOW WHAT HE CAN DO ALSO, WHO ELSE DID YOU RECRUIT FOR THIS”- The heroes did know what Koichi can do. That’s why Tensei outsourced some extra help this time around….

Get to Know Me

Last Song: Old 97's - Timebomb. Just kinda got stuck in my head out of nowhere today, but that's hardly a bad thing. Too Far to Care is an easy top 5 desert island album for me. Correction: I guess that was the last song I had listened to before I started this thing, but now I'm listening to Absolute Lithops Effect by the Mountain Goats. All Hail West Texas might also be a desert island album, actually... and if it's not, it's only because I'm being very careful to pick one album per band and some other tMG album edged it out. Sunset Tree, maybe? Ugh, really hard choice here.

Currently Reading: Exalted: Essence, I guess. I still haven't quite completed a cover-to-cover read yet, but that hasn't stopped me from running it.

Currently Watching: We watched a couple episodes of King of the Hill tonight! That was fun.

Currently Obsessed With: Oh, geez. That's kinda hard to narrow down.

Exalted's a big one right now. I lived and breathed the game from like, '01 - '11 or '12, but 3e didn't really land for me. Essence was just the thing to bring me back. I'm about 15 sessions into a new campaign and it feels really, really good to be running it again. I spend a ton of time thinking about Exalted, prepping the game, making dumb spreadsheets of demons and spells and stuff. Feels like home... Or maybe like falling off the wagon; haven't quite decided yet.

I really, really love making terrariums, but I haven't done one in a while. Despite my initial resistance, it kinda led to me just becoming a house plant guy, so that's me now, I guess. I'm not sure they're all thriving by any measure, but uh... I dunno. I've got the absolute best little string of turtles. Never met a peperomia I didn't love.

I'm really itching to put together a small planted aquarium, but it hasn't happened yet. Nothing huge, but there's logistics to figure out, just the same.

Heyya!

There are some things I want to write (specifically: another Field Museum field trip (featuring stuff I got to see on member’s night) and CG headcanons for Father from the show “Raised By Wolves” - he’s such a freaking good dad!) but I’m probably not gonna get those written until at least June. (I work in a school and I’ve got some end-of-year burnout keeping me from writing.)

But I’ve been feeling smallish, so I thought maybe I’d rave about some of my favorite childhood movies (in no particular order). :)

A Troll in Central Park I swear, every single time we went to Blockbuster, I wanted to rent this movie. I just adored it, and I really still do. It just makes me really happy.

Lady and the Tramp This is one of my favorite Disney movies. It’s so pretty, and I love the characters.

Cats (1998) Is it a “kids movie”? No. Did I understand the plot? Barely. But by gosh, I’d put on a leotard and paint whiskers on my face, and I would dance around the living room like I’d been raised to play one of the characters. 😸

The Rescuers Down Under I actually wasn’t allowed to watch this for most of my childhood because my mom felt like the bad guy was “too evil” - she tried to be careful about the things me and my siblings watched when we were really young. (Although, kinda funny, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame” was never restricted. 🤣) But I was able to watch it a few times, and I really liked it.

The Prince of Egypt The MUSIC! My gosh, even when I was too young to really appreciate the visuals, I knew the music was great.

The Muppet Christmas Carol We still watch this movie every Christmas. One year my dad was on the phone with my grandparents while we were watching, and he couldn’t stop laughing at “Jacob and Robert Marley”.

Pollyanna I don’t really know WHY I loved this movie so much - it’s so dialog-heavy and I had (and still kind of have) a pretty short attention span. Still, basically every time I was at my grandparents house I wanted to watch their copy of it.

Bedknobs and Broomsticks I guess some people say this movie was a “Mary Poppins” knockoff? Honestly, as much as I do enjoy “Mary Poppins”, I personally like this more. Maybe ‘cause I like witches.

Kiki’s Delivery Service (1997 English Dub) The characters! The story! The music! AAAAHHH! This is still one of my all-time favorite movies, and it bums me out so much that the 97’ version is so hard to find. (I may or may not have found it online and saved it to my computer so I’ll always have it. XD) I still have the VHS copy I got for Christmas when I was really little.

Homeward Bound & Homeward Bound 2: Lost in San Francisco Everytime I hear the theme music I feel giddy. I like the first one a little more, but they’re both such nice, feel-good movies.

The Lion King 2 - Simba’s Pride … I like this movie more than the first one. 😱😂 The original “Lion King” is great, but I just alway liked this one more. The colors, the songs, the characters (good gosh, Zira is one of my favorite villains ever, don’t even get me started). It’s just really good!

Oliver and Company As a kid this was probably one of my top five Disney movies. It’s not quite so high on the list now, but I still really love it.

Hap Palmer’s Baby Songs This is technically a series and not a “movie”, but this is my list so I’m gonna count it. 😆 They’re mostly original songs, they’re super catchy, and the accompanying videos are a lot of fun. Most of the songs are on Hap Palmer’s YouTube channel; I highly recommend checking it out. (Also: I did not grow up watching “Turn on the Music”, but it’s also really good.) 

The Ruby Princess Runs Away This movie is available on YouTube, but please tell me if you ever saw it as a kid - none of my friends had and I couldn’t believe it. This was one of my favorite movies and I watched it so much I can still recite segments of it; a few years ago my sister picked a random scene, played a few seconds, and I gave her the next lines of dialogue. That’s how wild I was about it. 🤣 It’s honestly not a great movie, pretty average and without much of a budget, but I still love it.

Today about 1% of their group the Mac Morlock got up to leave from all over the place areas like Florida each area is 1% of the 30 to 35% population in those areas it's about average and here they got up and said We don't like you at all you're all jerks and you're all being mean but really they're going to the West to try and enact their plan and to get ready for it. And they want to attack us. We don't like you people at all and what you're saying is getting you hit because we don't think that you should survive after this idiot **** you're doing. But we do have news that tonight two households plan to go out there Well it's more like 20 and yeah the the water finally broke and it's because the pseudo empire ups are going out there and they can't do it when they're doing it and allow it to happen or their people would just be slaughtered. And now the clones are sending higher ups from the neighborhood we see two households and the Pseudo Empire are sending 10 households from the neighborhood so the Mack Morlock decide to send 20 so really it's 32 households. Reminiscing about Ninja x Pirate Status across the decades:

In 1997, One Piece and Naruto started their runs (If we are being stingy, Naruto started later in '99, but released a one shot in '97) - Naruto went on to become a huge success in the west, and One Piece is best selling manga series in history.

On the US, this debate rose to meme status starting in 2003: Pirates of the Caribbean premiered in early July, followed suit by Kill Bill: volume 1 - in October. Kill Bill is not a Ninja movie per se, but the japanese martial arts in an underground, mercenary aesthetic is a really close approximation, in style if not in name.

The peak clash of Pirates x Ninjas must have been around 2005-2006: The Naruto anime started airing on the US, just as Pirates of the Caribbean released it's second installment on the series. Pirates AND Ninjas were on the top of their waves, and the debate cemented as part of popular culture.

But time marches on: the last Naruto manga chapter came out in 2014, and it's filler riddled anime finished airing in 2017. So ended the largest Ninja media of the 21st century (as of now). The ninja aesthetic receded from the western side of things, not forgotten, but sidelined: A Video game or movie might have a ninja on it, but it's not gonna be about ninjas. (In Japan, this is subdued: There is always new ninja media - some with widespread popularity in the west in it's niche, like Sekiro for the video-game niche)

On the other hand, pirate media had a resurgence: Black Sails ran from 2014-2017, and the (hugely popular among the tumblr crowd for it's LGBTQ+ rep) Our Flag Means Death premiered in 2022, and already has a second season on the works. Pirates are the talk of the town - for now.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is a popular franchise with a new and charismatic installment on the way, but it's a weak pusher for the Ninja aesthetic - they are, after all, ¼ ninja. My forecast is that it's gonna take more to shift tumblr (and society at large) preferences back to an equilibrium or even a ninja push.
