i think the reason i love “ceilings” by lizzy mcalpine so much is because its the first song that accurately articulates the very real fear i have that im over-romanticising my own relationships

like- okay lets take this in segments. the way the first verse goes from this simple, vague gesture of getting a ride home from a friend to an incredibly intimate second verse- the repetition of “it feels like the start of a movie I’ve seen before” because that’s what its supposed to be, thats what it feels like growing up with the romanticism of being wanted and loved is supposed to be. the song builds and builds, and its car rides and rainstorms and farewell kisses and closeness; and all the while the song walks this tentative line, asking, ‘when is this going to come to an end? how am i going to somehow ruin these perfect moments?’

and then- and this is the most insane part- you do ruin it.

you ruin it, not by saying the wrong thing or walking away at the wrong moment, but simply by imagining something that never really existed in the first place. its the crumbling, terrible realisation that none of this was real, that it hasn’t been real for a very, very long time, and then suddenly you’re just. sitting in a car, trapped in a fleeting moment that you read too much into, and all you can really do is yearn for a closeness you can’t be sure you ever really had.
