Animation fandom discourse can be really funny at times because you can have a person trying to explain to you why Steven Universe or The Owl House have bad LGBT+ representation under the same breath they try to persuade you into believing that a LGBT+ background couple that shows up for 3 seconds in one episode from a 100 episodes series is actually the pinnacle of queer representation.

A new study of LGBTQ+ representation in Canadian film, TV, streaming and video game industries says there are significant gaps in how the diverse community is portrayed on screen, despite some recent improvements.
The paper published today by Pink Triangle Press says a majority of industry professionals agree that portrayal of LGBTQ+ characters is frequently superficial, stereotypical and focused solely on trauma.
[...]
It says that while 85 per cent of industry professionals have seen improvements over the past five years, a “significant” gap persists in the amount and type of representation, especially when it comes to queer and transgender characters.
The report – based on surveys, interviews and media content analysis collected from December 2023 to May – says gay men are the best-represented LGBTQ+ group but they still only represent seven per cent of characters in the top shows.
The paper says barriers to inclusion include a lack of LGBTQ+ decision-makers and “cautious” industry executives, as well as a reliance on storytelling tropes and stereotypes.

The Owl House fandom really helped me with my trans acceptance.
Keep in mind I identified as transmasc/nonbinary myself at the time, and absolutely believed in trans rights, but I was still having a hard time seeing trans men as actual men and trans women as actual women.
Of all things, it was all the Trans Hunter headcanons and fanfics that somehow made it click in my mind. That if he were trans or not he would still be Hunter, and he would still be a boy.
Trans Eda headcanons helped too.
I think that’s the beauty of headcanons. They exist in this hypothetical space that allows you to see things from two different angles, reframes characters you’re already familiar with in new and eye-opening ways. Headcanons allow you to project marginalized identities onto characters that are already beloved by people of many different walks and beliefs. It’s like a foot in the door to get to greater acceptance and understanding.
Trans headcanons are making a difference.
Your blorbos are making a difference.

Within just 18 episodes, OFMD managed to provide so many people with a safe space ship, where they felt loved, accepted and part of a community. Its legacy is one of celebrating queer joy and knowing the importance of a found family, which is why the cancellation tastes all the more bitter.
The plan was always to tell the story within a certain number of episodes, but without the final 3rd season, we have been left with more questions than answers. We have been left in the fandom gravy basket.
There's a sense of grief lingering in the wake of the saddening news. What was an outward declaration of 'we're here and we're queer' is now just another tombstone in the graveyard of Bury Your Gays. Queer characters are no longer just dying on screen. Instead, their TV shows are being cancelled without a proper conclusion.
That, for me, is where the main source of my feelings of injustice stems from. Time and time again, we invest in shows where we finally feel represented, where the main focus of a queer character's existence does not wholly revolve around the cost of being queer is eternal suffering. We get lulled into a false sense of security, only for it all to be cast aside in favour of a streaming service's latest whim. And for what purpose? Pure greed? Spite? Bad ratings can't always be an excuse when the numbers speak for themselves.
And the answer isn't to simply say, "Well, be the change you wish to see. If you want queer content, make it yourselves" because that's what we've been doing, and yet, somehow, it still gets taken away from us. How many more tears, heartache, frustration, and media disenchantment are we supposed to sustain before our content ceases to be constantly under threat?

and are these ridiculously-overrepresented canonically-gay relationships between every pair of close male characters in media, erasing and invalidating the existence of platonic male friendships in the room with us now?

“Watching and Dreaming” (Spoilers)
Hey everyone,
So I think this is going to be my last The Owl House post. I’m tagging this with spoilers just in case I go into any, but I somehow don’t think I will.
I’m not gonna lie, like most of you probably do, I wish The Owl House got much longer on the air. It is an amazing show and it feels a shame that Dana and the crew were forced to fit the ending into such a short span of episodes. There are areas that didn’t get explored further such as the consequences to Odalia Blight for her actions in helping the Emperor and also Kikimora. I would have liked to have seen a bit more exploration of Alador and Darius’ history even if it turns out they merely used to be friends and not in a relationship as I have predicted. Last episode we seemed to get just below the surface of why Boscha is the way she is. It would have been nice if these were all explored more but I appreciate constraints were put on the show where these things couldn’t be explored.
In the end though, I started this chapter of my blog with one theory in mind. Summer 2020 during the height of covid, I sat down to watch this show after it had been recommended to me and by episode 5, “Covention” I knew in that moment there was something between Luz and Amity and sure enough by Season 2 that was canon.
Lumity was the ship and at the time, the theory I set out to follow and that became canon. It is kinda why I begun to drop off a bit after it became canon, I continued to watch and enjoy the show but I was mostly out of ideas when it came to theories. And by the end Luz and Amity are still together and it seems they would have been together for 2-3 years by that point.
I really have enjoyed The Owl House. It ended way too soon and honestly, I wish a show like this had existed when I was a kid. I’m just so glad that LGBT+ youths growing up now or in the future will get to see themselves represented and in such an amazing show with such strong characters and story.
And who knows, maybe in the future Disney will see fit to return to the Boiling Isles but for now I think this is a good point to bring this chapter of my blog to a close. It’s been fun and thank you to all of you who continue to enjoy reading my sometimes incoherent ramblings 😂

i'm sort of like... quietly whispering this into the void, but...
there are days when i think i'd love to be a trans ambassador sometimes. people have questions they are afraid to ask, and i genuinely enjoy fruitful discussions. i love educating people on trans issues, what it means to be trans, and talking about my personal experiences. i see myself as someone who is comfortable with public speaking, and have a genuine heart for this kind of work.
but i don't know how to start, or where to go, or what to apply for.
#trans#lgbt+ rights#lgbt+ representation#tfw you have a genuine love for something but can't work out how to break into the field

A+ Children's Books with LGBT+ Representation (Suggested by a Children's Librarian) (1/?)
Families, Families, Families! by Suzanne Lang
A book that teaches kids that families come in all shapes and sizes. From single parents to parents of the same gender, to kids with tons of pets or no pets at all, to kids who live with relatives or are adopted, this book has it all.
Prince & Knight by Daniel Haack
A cute story about a prince trying to find a spouse to help him rule; after turning down a lot of princesses, it turns out the reason he wasn't interested is that he's gay and in the end he marries a knight instead of a princess.
And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson
The true story of Central Park Zoo's gay chinstrap penguins who successfully raised a rejected egg just like any other penguin couple. It's worth sharing with your mini reader that this is based on a real story, as most kids don't realize that gay animals are quite common in the animal kingdom and it's not just a human thing.
Red: A Crayon's Story by Michael Hall
Red is a crayon that can only draw blue. It's not until a new friend comes along that Red and their family figure out that perhaps they had been using the wrong label and Red was Blue all along. The book works well as a metaphor for both what it's like to be trans as well as for what it's like to have invisible disabilities.
