Audre was legally blind and described herself as “crazy and queer”; she focussed her activism on fighting for women who, like her, were excluded from mainstream feminism, whether because of class, race, sexuality, or disability.

She’s pictured here (right) with her partner and fellow activist Gloria Joseph, with whom she lived the last years of her life.
