I wanted to talk about something I found incredibly interesting in Arcane, and that was one of the many parallels that exist between Jayce/Viktor and Vander/Silco. Specifically, I’ll be focusing on a Viktor/Silco parallel, the ego-deaths of the two Zaunites.

Silco’s declaration to Vander’s statue is an admittance of defeat. He was wrong, Vander was right to leave the fight behind to care for his family. Maybe not morally right, to turn your backs on so many for so few, but it wasn’t a choice Silco could fault him for, he did exactly the same. It is the crumbling of Silco’s identity as the Eye of Zaun, he is no longer a kingpin, a revolutionary, or even a leader, he’s a father now, his role is protect Jinx, to nurture her life and ensure her safety and comfort by any means necessary. Vander’s sacrifice, and Jayce’s ultimatum, pushed him to this realisation that no matter how hard he tried to change himself, or the world, he couldn’t and that he would always care at his core.

Viktor has a similar realisation, but in the opposite direction, when he is first killed by Jayce in episode 6.

“I understand now” is a direct mirror of Silco’s declaration, merely twisted. Silco’s is one of reminiscence and love, spurred by the memory of his friend whom he had killed. Viktor’s was one of detachment, devoid of emotion, spurred by him being killed by Jayce. Viktor determines that humanity is fundamentally flawed and that the emotions of people will always lead to their downfall. It’s hard to argue with him on this, we see it countless times in Arcane, but removing the free will of everybody to prevent this is clearly way too far. Viktor was a man of peace who wouldn’t even consider using HexTech as weapons, but he was willing to use to it to impose his will on his followers. He thought that his view of the world was perfect and the only one that should be allowed to exist, because it was the one where the fewest people would die. Silco on the other hand was willing to sacrifice lives, even to the bitter end, for his own ideals. Silco recognised the monster he was and in the end was reminded of his own humanity, which was his downfall. Viktor began with dreams of peace but became convinced he was awful after Sky’s death, only for that to act as a self-fulfilling prophecy. He doesn’t recognise himself as evil as Silco does, to an extent, and only redeems himself when Jayce reminds him of who he is.

okayyyy, thoughts on the west wing 1.07 as an indonesian:

- yes, the thing about indo having suspected sorcerers being executed with scythes is true. the incident is called "pembantaian dukun santet/banyuwangi", which roughly translates to "the black shaman massacre/the massacre of banyuwangi". it took place from 1998–1999, a time when the country's eco-politics was at an all-time low (starting from 1997 + got hit with a metaphorical bazooka in 1998 after the 32-year-long authoritarian reigning president stepped down). banyuwangi is the town in which most of the killings took place. this was done by civilians and foreign individuals dubbed as ninjas because they suspected the victims were practicing black magic. that was not the case for the majority of them. from the midst of the victims were islam practitioners, traditional javanese healer shamans, and the heads of the neighborhoods.

- despite mr. minaldi saying, "there's no such language as indonesian. indonesians speak 583 different languages." there's an indonesian language, it's straight up called bahasa indonesia, which translates to indonesian language. it became the unifying language for indonesians in 1928, but officially became the national language on august 18th 1945, a day after the country gained independence on its own from 350 years of dutch colonization and the three hellish years of japanese occupation. a 2022 article published by the university of gadjah mada claim that 250 million out of the 272 million civilians can speak bahasa indonesia, so yeah, it is real, i think everyone knows this 😭

- i appreciate the nuance of the "senior aide to senior aide" scene. i think people should keep in mind that indonesia had an incident in 1998 where trisakti university students were killed in a protest demanding soeharto (the 32-year-long authoritarian reigning president)'s resignation. the tragedy sparked a revolutionary wave across the country that ultimately led to the end of his reign. so i think it's realistic that they would have toby's friend locked up for anti-government demonstrations, it's a touchy subject and they're extremely nationalistic, for better or for worse. now i'm in no way defending indo's government (god knows the country's future is bleak), but it is hypocritical for toby and jed to publicly humiliate president sugito like that. i think the us should stop having its nose all up in everybody's ass, they ain't hot shit either.

I've been thinking about why Ginsberg was asked to kidnap Milton Fleit Sr. specifically, and I think, to put it the way @utilitycaster put it to me back in February, that the plan is Fight Club.

If you're unfamiliar with Fight Club, the film adaptation: the third act revolves around a plan to wipe debt records by blowing up the headquarters of various credit card companies and of a credit reporting agency, setting everyone back to zero.

The Breach doesn't need as many explosives. The Trust keeps their records of every account in the one place (per 1.15): the Central Vault, the precise location of which within the geography of the Highest Light has been pointed out at every opportunity this season.

There isn't a whole lot that kidnapping Fleit offers to the Breach other than vacating his office temporarily (dubious, unless they want to replace him with their own person) or to get information about how the Bank of Valor works as an institution and how the Vault is laid out (also shaky, but potentially possible). Kozma claims (in 3.07): "The Breach isn't just out there. It's in here: inside the Trust, inside the Company, inside this city." The fact that the Company is mentioned* but not the Bank makes me wonder if they don't actually have a meaningfully significant enough foothold inside the Bank. Thus, they needed a way to get inside of it, understand it, or both.

* Tangent, since the Company is specifically mentioned, there must be someone we know there who is with the Breach. It's gotta be Gretel; we have only two named current members of the Company, and the other one is Spahr. It has to be Gretel just by process of elimination. This is not actually relevant to this point but—

That also leads me to wonder if this is why there's this sense of hovering over Phineas early on. (Hieronymous is in the Breach, Kozma already knew a lot about Phineas, so many seem to be keeping tabs on him, etc.) I wonder if it's like... after the Fleit plot failed, the Breach needed someone who had or could acquire security clearance to move freely through the Vault, a familiarity of off-limits areas, or both. As the new Prime Adsecla, and an apparently contentious pick for it (as suggested in appendices for 1.06), Phineas both holds a valuable position and is potentially ideologically vulnerable, making him a prime [ba dum tsh] candidate to target for a flip attempt. So, perhaps they've been working on Phineas since the Fleit plot failed. But, that's also a bit of a tangent.

Point is here: they seem to have needed Fleit for something. Kozma had ideas for what to do with Phineas, and whatever they needed Fleit for must be a gap in their logistics, but there is not a whole lot that Fleit and Phineas have in common, other than familiarity with various high-security spaces. So, I do wonder if the thing they needed was Vault access, because the specific plan is to blow up the TRW building Vault and zero out the entire debt record.
