Favourite fics of 2024

A time to look back and see what I've read and liked last year. I have a feeling I was reading more cnovels than fic, but I guess I'll find out! These lists are always fun to compile as I have no memory of what I might find in my bookmarks.

ATLA:

Mountains and Badgermolehills by Glass_Onion

A truly darling gen fic with a great Zuko POV. An AU where he and Sokka meet in prison, and Sokka gets a front row seat to Zuko's... everything. Naturally, they go on the run together, and the plot spins from there. The whole thing is really lovely and heartwarming.

Percy Jackson:

Sweat, Tears, the Sea (WIP) by SaveTheMoon

I was really enjoying this AU where Percy knows he's the son of Poseidon and is hiding his water powers. I need to catch up on the latest chapters!

BTVS:

don't look much like a lover (doesn't mean I won't try) by SummerFrost

An AU where Buffy doesn't die on the tower, and she and Spike still get together but in a much healthier way. I enjoyed the domesticity and the coparenting.

Goodbye to Everything That I Knew by MyBarbaricYawp

When Buffy is overwhelmed in s6, a social worker threatens to take Dawn away, so Buffy comes up with a scheme to pretend that Spike is her boyfriend and they're a respectable nuclear family. That makes everything tons better.

MDZS:

The One-Body Problem by metisket

Absolutely stellar and hilarious. Lan Jingyi accidentally ends up with WWX in his head for like a year before the canon events.

Practical Mythology by metisket

A very fun take on time travel, a badass WWX, and very entertaining narration.

Rule Number One: Never get attached. by KizuKatana

You know those fic premises that sound completely bonkers but then somehow work? This is one of those. LWJ as a crime boss?? Also, it's omegaverse and LWJ fucks omegas on the regular. LWJ as a crime boss who fucks??? And yet! Somehow, the fic made me believe it. This was highly entertaining, and featured a highly competent A++ WWX, and their dynamic was super hot.

FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: FW: On My Time as a Student Under Shen Qingqiu by Margo_Kim

A very correct (and hilarious) take on modern LBH/SQQ. Everything in this fic is great, from LBH's obsession to the humour. (The same author also has a WIP I enjoyed, but need to catch up on: If You Don't Have Store-Bought Character Growth, Homemade is Fine)

Sanity in Tatters by scholomancefan

The Jinlan city plague is a wife plot: the sneezes of the infected tear their clothes off, and papapa is the only cure. Naturally, SQQ is infected, and his narration is very entertaining.

Oversharing is Caring by Prudabaga

A hilarious fic where SQQ is fed an inhibitions-lowering truth serum during his trial at the Hua Hua Palace. Many truths emerge!

Wish Received, Wish Granted! (WIP) by SchaBao

I thoroughly enjoyed this AU where OG!Bingge went back to the past after the extras. It's got a lovely lovely POV of his trauma and hope and growing love for SQQ. I hope it updates one day!

What Is Seen by CaveteDracones

An interestingly done reveal fic where Shen Yuan does not reveal his transmigrator identity, but the system is revealed in the form of a curse that had been put on Shen Jiu when he was younger. All kinds of truths come out and all is fixed!

I love how mqf's oficial description is something like: a good heart who wants to help others but then you read the novel and his reaction to lqg trapping ten infected men who are crying in panic is "great now I can start to work in my experiments with decomposed people to find a cure" and gets out a lot of needles, which makes the man cry even harder.

Even if we only get bits of the other Cang Qiong sect leader's we can reach the conclusion that no one there is normal, sqq is just biased.

You know, I’d love to write a fic where Shen Yuan reverse-transmigrates back to the modern world, into his comatose body, and Binghe makes the absolute, most unhinged, crazy-stalker-girlfriend impression on his family trying to get him back.

Shen Yuan’s family: Jesus fucking Christ this lunatic keeps trying to break into the hospital room and assaulting people while screaming that we are keeping him away from his beloved wife! Where the fuck does A-Yuan pick up these people!

(Because I refuse to believe with my whole heart that Shen Yuan hasn’t always had his wifebeam. He just previously had two rich and powerful older brothers, two protective parents, and a very observant little sister beating them back with sticks.)

on a completely separate note; shizun luo binghe with a disciple shen yuan who fell into the abyss??? *thinks about LBH canonically stealing SQQ's corpse for 5 years* he'd hallucinate i think. like, like visual and audial hallucinations.

Keeps thinking he's seeing SQQ in the corner of his eyes, or wandering between the trees, amongst a group of disciples. Thinks he hears him calling for him, but its just the wind or another disciple.

Gets Xiu Ya reforged but patently fucking refuses to make a sword mound. Because his disciple Is Not Dead :))) There was No Body. He's Not Dead. And If You keep Insisting That He Is, He's Gonna Skewer You :). He's holding onto Xiu Ya so he can return his most favored disciple's sword when he returns. It's on his hip right next to Zheng Yang where it's supposed to be.

Also this motherfucker?? does not sleep btw. He has the image of SQQ, wide eyed and hysterical and standing at the mouth of the abyss burned into his fucking eyelids. Can't use the dreamscape to escape it either because he keeps trying to save him and either he does and it's an incredibly cruel trick to wake up to, or he doesn't and he gets his heart broken in several different pieces again.

There is no convincing this man that Shen Qingqiu is dead. Absolutely nothing at all. He is buried so deep in denial that moles would be jealous of how deep he is. He keeps making tea for two in the bamboo house only to remember that it's just him. SQQ's fans are hiding everywhere, little reminders of his presence. He goes to wake up SQQ on the mornings he sleeps in-- only to find the room empty.
