rewatching the first episode of Hannibal and holy shit I forgot how good this is but it's actually insane that Brian fuller set up the ep like this, he introduces will and Hannibal by first briefly showing them at their core, at the darkest, most vile part of them---we get a glimpse behind the curtain---and then its gone, the curtain is snapped shut and we see their masks, their human suits.
Will empathizes with killers because he likes it, and he wants to kill but he refuses to give into the urge because he knows how much he'll like it and he won't be able to stop. So he lives vicariously through other killers, satisfying his own dark urge by feeding it little morsels of secondhand blood lust. Every crime scene he works gives the urge something that satisfies it, not enough for it to grow, but enough for it be sate. Enough that he can ignore it for long enough that he can walk around and be Professor Will Graham who is Weird, Brash, and Non-sociable.
And Hannibal is a cannibal at night and a psychiatrist by morning.

"A dark, sexy non-verbal dance game using the mind-control mechanics that made the larp Bjergtaget a hit"
i do find it immensely charming how much the LARP community assumes deep knowledge of their very niche scene in literally all their game descriptions. hi, i'm a VERY Online™ nerd who's been to an entire larp convention at this point, plus multiple smaller games. i have never heard of Bjergtaget. i do not even know how to pronounce it. when i google it, the first result is a random PDF embedded in some Wordpress CMS in a .se domain i've never heard of. might i ask what the definition of a "hit" is. is it a hit if 30 people play. if 100 people play. it's gotta be somewhere below 1k, right, i KNOW the community is not that big

This might be like a weird ask, but like can you explain how larp works? I play ttrpgs so I know like the basics of roleplaying but like is it the same group everytime? But there seem to be so many people involved? Do you get assigned your character or do you create them? Is there some kind of a gm? I imagine the logistics are super complicated but maybe you could explain it a little? Also followed for db content, stayed for larp sideblog!
Not a weird ask at all! But oh boy, where do you begin?
Every larp is organized differently, and the things I'm about to say are by no means universal. I'll just explain this using the Mythodea campaign as an example.
Just like in ttrpgs, you've got one-off games, and long running campaigns. Mythodea is one of the largest german campaigns. There are several Mythodea events happening each year, the biggest one being Conquest with just under 10000 players. Then there's the Chroniken and the JdS, which usually have around 1500 players attending. There's a few more smaller events throughout the year, too.
These all happen in the same universe, with the same plotlines. Like sessions in the same game of DnD. Some players only attend the Conquest, others show up at several or most of the smaller events as well. All depending on how involved you want to get
Do they assign you a character?
No! There are larps that'll hand you a pre-made character, many don't. However, individual groups within the Mythodea campaign (say: certain nations, orders or camps) might have a certain design concept that they'd want your character to fit into if you want to join them. A knightly order wouldn't exactly want a random pirate joining their ranks. In the overall campaign, you can pretty much show up with any vaguely medieval (ish) fantasy (ish) character that you came up with.
Is there some kind of GM?
Kinda, yeah! The overarching plot is written by a team of organizers, who then brief the NPCs on what's supposed to happen next. The players, like in ttrpgs, then react to whatever gets thrown at them. Occasionally they'll brief "important" individual players, too, for logistical reasons. But as a player you ideally get minimal direct info from the game runners.
Since this is a giant campaign with all sorts of factions and groups, there is a fuckton of plot that isn't dictated by the game runners. A lot of conflict and storylines just evolve naturally, and you can attend most of the bigger events without necessarily having to interact with the given plot.
How are the players in such a big game organized?
The players are, in this case, split into groups. There's different kingdoms (in Mythodea you have four main kingdoms: southern, western, northern and the realm of roses. We don't talk about the east for, uh, a bunch of reasons. Plus a big number of independant kingdoms and groups). That's how the camps are divided. Within those big kingdom/group camps, you have smaller factions within said kingdoms. Like specific guilds, families or organizations. You'll usually have one or two people per small camp, and then again a few people for the umbrella groups organizing the logistics of who goes where, who's showing up, etc etc. If this sounds horribly complicated and like one mess of a snowball system, that's because it is. You just hope that whoever's directly above you in the chain of People Who Organize Things knows what they're doing.

It's kind of sad that Mezoti was left with Rebi and Azan's people instead of being returned to Norcadia Prime
Voyager had just passed through Norcadian territory in Tsunkatse – Neelix just talked to the ambassador! They apparently dropped the Borg baby off somewhere nearby, and Mezoti could've still had family looking for her

So does any mineral oil work on steel armor to remove old wax and oils? Or do I need a specific type? It's my first time re-waxing my helmet, and I don't want to mess it up. It's pretty dry right now, like I think all the oil that was on it dried up. I just know I'm supposed to remove stuff with a microfiber cloth, use steel wool to get rid of rust, then put the new wax on. But I'm just concerned the mineral oil I have at home won't work, or will ruin the helmet.

So uh, executive functions a bitch hey? Anyways, here's the long overdue 'fit reveal of my Wams and Hose (the pink and green fabric from this post, with the original idea being this) and my Hemd.
So this outfit is around 16th century German, and on the simpler side of Landsknect. All the pieces are made of linen (except for the tights, they're just ballet tights I ordered online), and the cord was braided by both myself and a friend.
Patterning the hose (shorts) was a very, um,, intimate experience... In order to make the pattern some old tights were sacrificed, I stood very still, and was mummified in duct tape. As you can see, they fit quite well, and the short inseam gives me quite a considerable range of motion
The wams (top) are attached at the front and back centre by ties. I'll eventually add more attachment points on the side I think, but for festival they held up spectacularly.
Overall I'm very happy with them, I missed my colour goals slightly, but also they're just the cutest watermelon palette >:)

sometimes I remember something that happened in cql and then just stare off into the void of "these were deliberate choices somebody made, but for what and for why did they make them??????"

#1 interaction of my larp weekend:
"Arbiter [me] this is the accused [of stabbing another character, unprovoked.]"
"What is your name sir?"
"*high pitched whistle noise*"
"Uh...right. Do you have a nickname? I'm not sure how to write that in the report."
"Friends call Murder Bird? That do?"
"M...Murder...Bird. Alright then."
"I didn't do. Stupid-hat-weird-eye-nice-sword just mad. He took down my heads, made big shout bout. He want so bad, I put in bed for. No stab."
"...your...heads?"
"Kill bandits. Eat. Use bones for axes, heads on spikes to keep more bandits away. Protect town. Use all parts, otherwise wasteful."
"...but you didn't stab this man?" *gestures to alleged victim*
"No."
"...right..."

Sit with me about this part of hetafandom that's interested me (in a good way!) for years.
I am endlessly curious about this HetaOni Larp that seems to have taken place in Sweden(?) in early 2013... there are a few vlogs of it on Youtube from ten years ago from which you can sparse somewhat of a plot but from the looks of it, it seems like it was a horror-y larp (inspired by the fangame HetaOni obv) in which all the participants, except for the monsters & camera people were cosplaying hetalia characters and acting out the larp somewhat in-character.
It's been hella intriguing to me ever since I watched the vlogs from it many years ago, and it looks like it was a lot of fun, but I have so many questions on it. The vlogs only encompass the beginning/middle of the larp, which seems to have taken place all in one night. Some of em might be answered already if I had more knowledge on how larps are set up and run but I do not.
The whole larp looks like it takes place inside some sort of school/public building, with a large number of rooms and hallways, some of which are set up for the larp. What kind of building was it? How did they set it all up? It seems like it would have been difficult to run this kind of event at that kind of venue.
More interesting than that, there seems to be some kind of in game possession or mind control that affected certain characters and made them hostile, which then may have spread to more characters who were in contact with them or with the monsters? We only get so much explanation of this in the vlogs but it was quite spooky. There is a sequel larp (which I have admittedly watched less often) but I'm not sure how much that mechanic is explored in that one.
I am 100% reading far too much into all of this lol I'm sure at its core it was a fun lil larp hosted by some friends who wanted to rp together and have a blast scaring the shit out of each other, and who did their best to record it. The vlogs definitely brought me lots of entertainment when I found em in middle school & even now after it seems that everyone in it has since moved on from hetalia.

abyssal black flame dragon from omniscient reader's viewpoint is one of the best ever takes on immortal characters imo. as insulation from being driven mad by the apathy of an eternal life, he purposely forced himself into the mindset of a 15-year-old chuunibyou.
preserving that innocent wonder for life and childish grandiosity by force, on purpose, as defence against the ennui of immortality. what an absolute power move t b quite fucking h. king shit.

look, if you are in my classes, here's my advice to you:
read the syllabus
read the assignment instructions
I'm begging you to read the assignment instructions and then follow them
definitely check the speaker notes on PPTs because you will get the most unhinged Easter eggs for literally no reason
