Did you know that this november in France a member of the parliament has drugged another member of the parliament with the intention of raping her?
Don't worry though, his lawyer appeared on TV and offered a perfectly good explanation as to why he did what he did. See, his cat had died recently, so he was very upset. Also, a friend of his has cancer, so he was very upset. Plus, political campaigns are stressful so he was very upset. So naturally he tried to rape a woman! No but he didn't. You don't understand. Someone gave him ecstasy to make him feel better, but he totally didn't know it was ecstasy, it was just a bag of white powder, how could he have known? He put the ecstasy in a glass of champagne, as you do. But then, he changed his mind and left the glass of champagne in the fridge for god knows how long. He then invited the woman to a restaurant, then innocently switched it to "come to mine instead" and gave her the poisoned glass by total accident and tried to make her drink it super fast by accident and played with the light switch by accident and tried to prevent her from leaving by accident. It wasn't planned at all, people, it's just a big misunderstanding. I shit you not, that's what the lawyer said on live TV. Guerriau is currently being charged for drug possession and drug use as well as drugging someone with the intention of committing a sexual assault.
By the way, in 2016 this guy posted a picture of his erect penis on his official twitter account. Obviously it wasn't him who did it and he was very embarrassed by it. He claimed his twitter had been hacked and that he was going to press charges but eventually later said that he had taken care of the matter internally, that it was some member of his staff who'd done it. My guess is that someone was trying to expose him for who he is even back then. I can imagine a woman he'd sent this to doing this to him. And yet, he got re-elected as senator. Amazing. Also worth noting that he was awarded the highest title as Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur of France a while ago. I love it when men reward each others like that.
Au revoir 🫡

Woman Bitten by a Serpent, by Clésinger…...
This captivating marble carving caused a great scandal in the 1847 Parisian Salon. A suggestive image of a naked woman writhing from the pain of a bite inflicted by the snake twisted around her wrist, or that may be just a cover story for something else? Scandalous like few, critics claimed that this masterpiece was produced from a life cast of the commissioner's mistress, Apollonie Sabatier
- also muse to Baudelaire and known as "La Présidente" - as to claim the artist was lazy, unskilled and immodest, and pointed to the dimpled flesh at the top of her thighs to strengthen their point. Proof that there is no such a thing as bad publicity, Clésinger had his friend Theophile Gauter orchestrate the scandal to grow the sculpture's success.
Auguste Jean-Baptiste Clésinger
(1814-1883) was a painter and sculptor known for the sensuality of his works. Trained by his father, also a celebrated sculptor belonging to the Besancon school of painting, he began exhibiting in the Parisian Salon in 1843 and earned immediate success. He produced plenty of acclaimed busts, such as those of Rachel Félix, Louis of Savoy and his dear friend Theophile Gautier.
His works are displayed in places of the highest distinction such as the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Musee d'Orsay in Paris, and was much admired for the funerary monument of Chopin in the Pere Lachaise Cemetery, where he is buried himself, along with many others. After a failed marriage he met his model and mistress Berthe de Courrière, to whom he was still devoted until the end of his life. He received the Légion d'honneur in 1849.
• Height: 56,5 cm (22.2 in). Width: 180 cm (71 in). Marble, 1847.

Hi ladies! For this 3rd post I am again going to talk about a woman I mentionned yesterday (in the post about Natalie Clifford Barney) ;
Romaine Brooks !
Her birth name is Beatrice Romaine Goddard, but we know her as Romaine Brooks. Successful italian american painter, she was born in 1874 in Roma and died in 1970 in Nice (in France) at 96 years old. Her works were successful in the early years of her career, before declining considerably during the 1930s and regaining popularity in the 1960s.
Both her parents were American and had two other children. Shortly after Romaine's birth, they decided to return to the United States, then broke up.
It was here that life took a difficult turn for young Beatrice: her mother took very little care of her, and abused her, accusing her of being possessed by the devil and of bringing bad luck. When she was seven, her mother abandoned her, leaving her to a poor family in New York. This same family informed the child's grandfather, who then decided to take charge of his granddaughter and her education. He placed her in various religious institutions, and for years she saw very little of her mother.
She began drawing and painting at the age of 16.
In 1893, she moved to Europe, became a cabaret singer in Paris and studied painting in Roma. She returned to live with her mother in 1901, after her brother's death, but her mother died in 1902, leaving Romaine to inherit her grandfather's fortune.
From then on, Romaine began to live a very unconventional life. In 1903, she, an open lesbian, and her homosexual friend John Ellington Brooks decided to marry. It's obviously not a love marriage, but an agreement, an arrangement between the two friends: this marriage will give the impression that they respect social norms and will therefore spare them the comments and pressure of society, and they will be free to love whoever they want, sheltered behind their appearance as a married couple.
Romaine and John never lived together, but to thank him for helping her, Romaine paid her friend a monthly allowance.
Romaine has had many lovers in her life : Dolly Wilde, (yeah this is Oscar Wilde's niece, and an interesting person!), the dancer Ida Rubistein, the marquise Luisa Casati, the pianist Renata Borgatti... but the love of her life was Natalie Clifford Barney. As you know it if you've read my post about Natalie, the two women stayed together for about 50 years, from 1914/1915 (unclear) until Romaine's death in 1970.
In 1904, she began using shades of gray in her work, and these would remain the dominant tones in her later paintings.
One of her best-known paintings is "La France Croisée" (Crossed France), which she painted in reaction to the first Battle of Ypres, at the beginning of the first world war.
The "patriotism" that transpires from this allegorical painting and inspired her mobilization for France and the Croix-Rouge française earned her the Légion d'Honneur in 1920.
She was a very successful painter. Her paintings were exhibited all over the world, from Paris to London to New York. Her career peaked in 1925, followed by a decline in the '30s. At this point, she gave up painting and concentrated on drawing, creating works inspired by her unhappy childhood. In the 60s, however, the art world started to take a renewed interest in her paintings.
She died at 96 in Nice, in December 1970, and since then, several prestigious exhibitions in her honor have been organized, rekindling public interest in Romaine Brooks and her work.
Here are some of her paintings :
(This is Natalie Clifford Barney!)
(This is Ida Rubistein)
(The Charwoman)
(This is Renata Borgatti)
(Chasseresse)
There is way much more to say about her and you should really check her life and her art! She was an interesting person with interesting works and I personally am glad I found her paintings.
See you tomorrow!

Mortier becoming Prime Minister
So in 1834, Mortier became the 15th Prime Minister of France. He also became the Minister of War. This lasted…….for 4 months. The author writes it was because of his loyalty and friendship with Louis-Philippe, who was the king at the time, that he took the roles (with a lot of hesitation) and basically failed..
Indeed, we cannot perceive, in the unanimous concert of praise given to the marshal by his contemporaries and by the historians who followed, any discordant note. It was undoubtedly his feelings of righteousness and loyalty pushed to the extreme which, even more than the lack of habit of the platform, prevented him from succeeding in the presidency of the Council of Ministers. He only retained this high office from November 18, 1834 to March 12, 1835, having, moreover, only accepted it, at the same time as the Ministry of War, at the urging of King Louis-Philippe who wanted to thus end a long ministerial crisis.
Here’s a bit on when Louis-Philippe sent Mortier’s nephew to tell him to accept the positions. The nephew (Hector) barely got to Mortier after he esscaped left Lalande for home:
The King had sent to Plessis-Lalande, to the marshal, his nephew, Count Hector Mortier, since ambassador and peer of France; the latter, not having found him in Lalande, was returning towards Paris when he met, near Vincennes, the marshal's car taking him back to his castle; he went up to him to tell him of his mission, while allowing him to continue on his way. He had extreme difficulty in persuading his uncle to comply with the Kings wishes; the marshal replied:
"I don't want to expose myself to being tricked by lawyers.”
It was only after a long journey that the marshal finally decided, out of devotion to the King, to give the order to turn back and went to the Tuileries.
"He accepted these functions with regret," it is said in the Fastes de la Légion d'honneur.

Angélique Brûlon, the first woman to receive the Légion d'honneur
Brûlon and served from 1792 to 1799 in the defence of Corsica. She initially fought disguised as a man along with her husband, but was eventually discovered to be a woman. Despite this, she had shown such valour in battle that she was allowed to remain in service. She survived her husband and was proficient with sword and dagger in hand-to-hand combat. According to her comrades; "she fought with us with the courage of a heroine... with the zeal and courage of a true republican". Napoleon III decorated her as a Chevalier of the French Legion of Honour in 1851, aged 79. She was the first woman to receive that honor. The first request on her behalf, filed by Marshal Sérurier in 1804, had not been granted.
#napoleonic#napoleon#angelique brulon#so i went down a rabbit hole today about the legion of honour...#i also found a cool (but fictional) depection of napoleon giving the legion of honour to another female soldier which i need to share#but major props to angelique her name deserves to be known in napoleonic circles

Léon Bonnat (1833–1922), French. Samson's youth (1891).
Bonnat was born in Bayonne, but from 1846 to 1853 he lived in Madrid, where his father owned a bookshop. While tending his father's shop, he copied engravings of works by the Old Masters, developing a passion for drawing.
Bonnat won a medal of honour in Paris in 1869, going on to become one of the leading artists of his day. Bonnat went on to win the Grand Officer of the Légion d'honneur and became a professor at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1882. Bonnat was quite popular with American students in Paris. In addition to his native French, he spoke Spanish and Italian and knew English well.
Bonnat never married, and lived for much of his life with his mother and sister in the Place Vintimille (renamed Place Adolphe-Max in 1940). He died in France on September 8, 1922 (aged 89).

sence başarmak isteyen her türlü başarır mı abi? Bir hayalim var herkes engel. Her şey engel. parasızlık engel.
