% Arabica, Unit K-2, 189 The Grove Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90036
Tumblr media
% Arabica is a stylish new coffee kiosk originating from Kyoto, Japan and located at The Grove. This is their first branch on the West Coast. The options are limited to espresso drinks, served hot or cold, matcha lattes, and lemonade (a homemade recipe from Kyoto). There is no drip coffee and no pour over. The pastry options are limited to croissants and kouign amann.
The coffee is single origin, sourced from small farms, and light roast. Prices are not listed.
Kyoto Latte ($6.25, 8 oz): made with condensed milk, a richer drink with subtle sweetness. The cup wasn’t filled to the top and there was a LOT of foam (too much foam). The latte art was decent but simple. The sweetness was subtle and pleasant as was the flavor of the coffee (mellow, not bitter). It wasn’t hot enough either. Maybe the drink is supposed to have more foam than a regular latte. Not sure.
They also sell stylish % branded merchandise, including mugs, grinders, and other coffee accessories. Mr. Froyo didn’t want anything because they didn’t have pour overs or drip coffee. I don’t think they offer parking validation (I asked). Since handbrewing/pour overs are so popular in Japan, it’s strange that they aren’t offered at % Arabica LA.
4 out of 5 stars.

SOUR until SUGAR ☆
Suna rintarou x fem! reader
Fluff (◡ ω ◡).
For Minnie <3
You moved on, you really thought you did but seeing him happy with somebody else while you were still where you are now triggered something within you, well someone wishes to change that... A regular customer maybe?
/ Pls lemme know the artists @!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
"Good morning" your coworker greeted you
"morning" you replied with a smile, for some reason today you felt like everything would go well.
You were in charge of taking orders today.
"Excuse me-" A familiar voice called out to you.
It was your ex, you were stunned you didn't know what to do unless he snapped you out of it again "Two strawberry shortcake, One latte and one Watermelons soda please." He only said that and returned to a table. With a girl.
Maybe your gut feeling that things would go right today wasn't correct after all.
"he didn't even say a hi... Of course why would he hah"
You wrote the order immediately down in a sticky note, you stole a glance at them before giving it to your coworker.
She was pretty, she really was. You felt she was even prettier than you taller than you and probably smarter than you too who knows.
You sighed and opened your phone to text your friend.
[You]
You won't believe ts,
I'm at work and for
some reason my ex who was in kyoto
Is in Tokyo's café where i work
Fml
[Friend]
WHAG
the odds are less but ever zero huh
GOOD LUCK
don't sweat it you guys ended it on
good terms isn't it?
Nth to worry abt
[You]
He's here with a girl :)
Probably new gf :))))
[Friend]
Oh....
Rip soldier ..
You closed your phone and almost went for a washroom break to bang your head on the wall but then the regular customer for 2 months walked in.
He approached the counter, "The regular?" You asked. He scratched his neck "Actually I have yet to decide" you handed him one of the sticky notes "After you decide you can write it here and bring it to me okay?"
40 seconds later he handed you the note.
Iced lemon soda
Blueberry cheesecake
You chuckled as you read it "he was going to write iced lemon soda anyway huh" then you saw there was an extremely scribbled line at the bottom you squinted your eyes but still couldn't read it.
That night you went home and devoured a whole box of ice cream watching comedy shows hoping it'll make you feel better.
The next day after school it started raining, it seems that the weather has been matching your mood lately and your bad luck has been consistent too, you held out a hand feeling the raindrops contemplating if you should wait till it stops or just run through it so you don't get late for work.
You sighed, you didn't want to get scolded by your manager again so you decided you'll just make a run for it, by running you'll reach there in 6 minutes of course it came with the risk of falling down and embarrassing yourself but you'd prefer that over getting scolded anyday.
Just as you put one foot into the slightly muddy ground something covered you from the above, a grey umbrella you turned your head to see it was the regular customer. "...what" it just came out of your mouth automatically. "Hm? Never seen me before?" He questioned, well you really didn't you entered this school only 4 months ago. "You go around here?" You asked. He smirked "That sounds like you're hittin' on me"
You raised your hand and waved it "huh no really.. I didn't know you studied here too.."
He just looked at the sky and then back at you "Well in any case we're heading the same way aren't we?"
"...to the café?" You asked. Just to be sure.
"Walking with me would be better than getting wet isn't it?"
Months passed and autumn arrived.
Of course you were working and he came again.
You walked to his table and folded your arms
"we're about to close"
"make some time for me yeah?" He put his one leg above the other.
Two people entered after him, it was your ex and that girl again.
You were less bothered by it this time because someone you knew was there. You tapped your feet "hurry I've gotta take orders of other people too y'know?"
He rested his chin on his hand "Actually I haven't decided yet"
You sighed and handed him a sticky note "you know what to do"
Before walking away you told him "It's my last day working here today by the way"
He hummed "My order today needs to be even more special then I guess"
After a minute he handed you the note.
Since you were already slightly annoyed and nervous from your ex and his girlfriend or whatever being there. You just handed the note to your co- worker who is also the manager without reading it. 4 seconds later she taps on your soldier "what is this..." You read it.
1 lemon iced soda
1 Jasmine milk tea
1 chocolate fudge
1 taro lava cake
1 chicken delight pizza
2 half cheese half sausage corn dogs and,
For the pretty cashier to share this with me
Custom order : her heart ♡
It was full of your favourite snacks from the café and most importantly what the hell was the last note, you immediately turned your face towards the opposite wall trying to hide your red face. Your manager sighed and put her hands on your shoulder. "Listen just go for it okay, you can take a leave today I won't reduce it from your paycheck"
"what????" You looked back at your manager, before you could say anything else she just pushed you "now off you go"
You pulled a seat in front of Suna and just sat there. "Why did you order so much? No way I can finish that" he leaned into the table now both his hands supporting his face. "I'll finish it for you then" you chuckled "like a trash panda?" He scoffed "yes. Like a trash panda."
Your gaze moved behind him, where your ex and his new girl were sitting Suna noticed that and his frown deepened he poked your cheek to face you towards him "How insulting, looking at others when I'm before you"
"I'm not..." You were about to pick your phone that was on the table to distract yourself but he pulled your phone back to him, you couldn't help but shamelessly notice his pretty hands "I'll repeat again, how can you focus on other things when I'm right here?"
Well let's say maybe you were gonna be getting a new boyfriend.
Everything felt sour until he added sugar.

Do you have any advice on how to get better at making matcha? My little handheld milk frother does a decent job, but I just can't seem to get the hang of the bamboo whisk (even with thorough sifting and a bunch of whisking I still seem to get some clumps at the bottom...) and I would love to be better at making it the proper way. Also, your cookbook is amazing and I can't wait to see what else you make! Wishing you all the best :)
definitely start with investing in high quality matcha, because the tools can only do their own job but can never make up for the actual tea itself. I personally buy from ippodo tea, but in general just make sure your matcha is sourced in Japan only, and I'd focus on brands that don't have any additives (grocery store matcha often has other things for shelf stability etc), it should always JUST be the green tea milled and nothing more. beyond that, having a proper sift to make sure you don't have clumps even before you start whisking is important, soaking your matcha whisk in warm water for a minute before using it, having a well shaped bowl (whisking in a regular bowl doesn't match a true matcha bowl in my opinion, I HATED using whatever cheap bowls my old work would provide vs the nice bowl I have at home) and whisking should only take about 15 seconds, fast but gentle back and forth, not circles.
I recommend investing in this set, it's the one I use:
it's cheaper in the long run to have a nice kit at home for the best quality drinks rather than getting matcha out anyways. most shops carry Rishi (worst matcha!!!!!) and don't even sift let alone make it right and will still charge you $8 a cup! having a full kit at home and making it yourself is such a beautiful ritual, and I even use my matcha kit to make oolong lattes too with the milled oolong powder I enjoy

trip updates part one: Tokyo
It was a mercifully smooth 12-hour flight from Minneapolis to Tokyo! The seat next to me was unoccupied, so I could stretch my legs out, sleep a bit, read, and watch my shows. I finished Black Friend by Ziwe, which I loved, and Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors by Piers Paul Read. I also watched the first five episodes of Succession, season one! I'm so into this show.
It was so easy to navigate Tokyo via the subway. I took the train from the airport to my hotel, dropped my stuff off, and had time to visit Senso-ji Temple that evening. Visiting a religious site is something I like to do as soon after landing as possible. Senso-ji in the evening, lit up, was beautiful. I wandered through the temple grounds to look at the pagodas and the stone Buddha statues, while listening to the clinking of people dropping their coin offerings into the metal collection area. I found a little ramen spot nearby, and the ramen was incredible and very comforting after 12+ hours of travel, going through customs, navigating around a new city, etc.
The next day, I found a cute little cafe right next to my hotel where I could start my day with my caffeine fix. I headed to Tsukiji Market, and I LOVE a market. Normally I hate crowds, but when there's food involved, that hatred goes away. :) I explored the food stalls and ate all the seafood my little heart desired - crab legs, eel, scallops, a sashimi bowl.
I went to Meiji-Jingu shrine, in the middle of Yoyogi Park, which is very forested. One of the coolest things about this location was seeing a wedding ceremony that was taking place, with the couple and family dressed in traditional Japanese clothing. It was a lovely area to explore, and after I inevitably got lost in the park and found my way again, I had sakura flavored soft serve ice cream as a treat.
The Hamarikyu Gardens were an unexpected stop for me, while I waited for my evening kabuki show to start, and I'm so glad I went. The flower field there was yellow as far as my eyes could see, and there were tons of hummingbirds around.
The kabuki show was a cool experience - I loved the music, and the body language of the actors!
Other highlights of the rest of my time in Tokyo:
Matcha lattes and pancakes at the cafe near my hotel
Seeing cherry blossoms at Ueno Park!!
The collection of art and artifacts at Tokyo National Museum
The food - ramen, katsu curry, pho!
Soaking in the large, hot public bath at my hotel, which I had to myself that night.
One thing I didn't expect:
The weather! Coming from one of the coldest places in the United States, where it gets to be -30 F, I didn't think that Japan in spring would challenge me. And yet, it did. I brought my mid-weight spring coat, which has been working fine for me at home. For some reason, I found Tokyo very windy, and the wind cut right through me. I was very uncomfortable walking around, and finally, I had to buy another coat at Uniqlo here, as well as a scarf. I got both for ~$40 USD so it didn't break the bank, at least. :)
I got to Kyoto yesterday morning and I have more to journal about that, but I will do so in a separate post. :)
It has been amazing to be on vacation. To not have to worry about work, or grocery shopping, or cooking, or getting my workout done before work starts, or anything. I love my job and it still feels AMAZING to not work.
Oh, also, I almost forgot to add - I got an email as soon as I landed in Tokyo, confirming that I have been accepted at the university I applied for, and will be starting my MSW in fall. It's been a lovely celebratory trip!

Devil Summoner Akechi Goro vs the Phantom Thieves
Canto III: Devils in the Details
S.E.E.S. Kyoto - Training Hall Kyoto, Japan 5:05 a.m.
The sound of steel thwacking against wood could be heard from across the base and Sanada Akihiko knew there was no other place his commander could be at such an ungodly hour.
The traditional design of S.E.E.S.' master headquarters had changed little in the two hundred years since the Order of Yatagarasu was founded. Tokugawa Ietsugu had surpassed his legendary ancestor by uniting hundreds of secretive demon hunting clans under the banner of the Shogunate. While S.E.E.S. had long since outgrown the humble devil hunter roots and rebranded itself as a modern paramilitary organization, its history was on full display in the old capitol building.
“Akihiko-senpai?” Akihiko’s head turned as a young brown-haired man jogged up behind him, still dressed in a sweatshirt and warmup joggers from his morning run. A pale shiba inu nipped at his heels, jogging ahead and nuzzling Akihiko’s hand as he reached out to pet him.
“Have we heard from Tokyo yet?” Amada Ken panted, tugging his earbuds out and stowing them in his pocket.
“Just heard from Shirogane; looks like things went as smoothly as could be expected,” Akihiko said, scratching Koromaru behind the ears.
“Niijima-san is alive then?” Ken asked. “What about-”
“Yoshizawa is fine,” Akihiko said with a crooked smile. “Akechi too but I guess you don’t care that much about him .”
“C’mon, don’t make me sound heartless,” Ken sighed, looking around and dropping his voice to a whisper as he leaned closer to Akihiko. “ Is it true that we had Fiends break through the barrier last night?”
“Still trying to sort that out; I wouldn’t put too much stock in the reports coming out of Tokyo until we can get down there and figure out what the hell Narukami's people are doing,” Akihiko sighed, leading Ken towards the training hall at the far side of the base.
Cold morning dew hung on the trees lining the open courtyard, breath coming in clouds from Kirijo Mitsuru’s mouth as her Polish saber thwacked against wooden training dummies, cutting deep grooves in the battered oak. Her hair was bound in a tight bun, scarred arms left bare as her sword glinted in the morning sunlight. If the chill bothered her, she made no complaint; Mitsuru darkly joked that she got all her crying out when she was ten.
Given all that she had endured when she was ten (and all that she had endured since ), Akihiko wouldn’t begrudge her the odd tear every now and then.
The only other figure in the courtyard sat perched on a wooden railing along the side, a cup of coffee in one hand and beanie shoved over an unruly mop of brown hair. His eyebrows raised in greeting as Akihiko and Ken slid on each side of him, tearing a chunk off a bun croissant and tossing it to the dog at Ken’s feet.
“What a fucking mess…” Aragaki Shinjiro grumbled, sipping his caramel latte with a wince. “Way too early to deal with these unholy monsters.”
“The Phantom Thieves or the Board of Directors?” Akihiko chuckled.
“It’s never too early to take a bite out of a demon but it’s cruel to make us deal with Chairman Shithead before the sun’s even warm,” Shinjiro sighed, breath clouding in front of his face.
“He called?” Akihiko asked.
“Called, texted, emailed; the geezer even sent us a fucking fax when we weren’t prompt enough with our replies,” Shinjiro grumbled. “Of course, Mitsuru ain’t tripping over herself to indulge his curiosity which has only got his non-existent hair in a knot.”
“The Board can wait until I’ve finished my workout,” Mitsuru called from across the courtyard, saber biting into the dummy’s wooden neck. “The way things are going, I don’t think the Chairman will begrudge me brushing up on my swordwork.”

Review: The Makanai: Cooking For The Maiko House - Episode 4
This one takes a break from our usual maiko escapades and instead focuses on family, so here’s the review for episode 4! Episode 4 - Wish After receiving a card from a lucky four leaf clover taxi the night before, Sumire shares her card with the yakata family and they all remark about what they’d wish for if they had one. So, they decide to instead put it in the yakata’s family shrine so that its luck will affect the entire household. As stated in the series, four leaf clover taxis are real rare taxis that drive the streets of Kyoto, with about 4-6 being in operation everyday. Your chances of finding one are extremely slim, but for those who do, you’re rewarded with a special good luck card like the one Sumire got and are said to be a very lucky individual.  Sumire and Kiyo have one of their days off, so they go out for special pancakes and lattes at a nearby café. The girls are just shown having some carefree fun for the first time in a while, which is then juxtaposed by the sudden appearance of... SUMIRE’S FATHER (dun Dun DUN!). Going back to episode one, Sumire’s parents didn’t see her off at the station in Aomori because they didn’t really approve of her becoming a maiko. Now, some months later, her father shows up at the yakata and it’s not looking good for Sumire. Her father wants her to come back home and become a doctor, but Chiyo and Azusa try to soothe his fears by having him sit in on one of Sumire’s dance lessons. Naturally, Sumire is a bit on edge during the lesson and gets called out by the dance teacher, and we have to wonder if Sumire can get past her fears and anxieties to either stand up to her father and become a maiko or just meekly pack up and go home. Back at the yakata, Kiyo’s making some braised eggplant agebitashi and it’s stirring up emotions for everyone who tries it. First to try the dish is Chiyo who comments that it has a nostalgic flavor to it. Later that night Sumire’s father is at Saku’s bar with Chiyo, Azusa, and Yoshino in attendance. Sumire’s father is a bit of a forgetful drunk and keeps telling everyone about how special Sumire is and how he wants her to become a doctor, but Yoshino starts setting him straight by telling him that you can’t chase children or they’ll just run away on you. Sumire’s father is then served some of Kiyo’s eggplant and he begins to cry at the taste. Something seems to click for him and he readies himself to go back home. Sumire walks her father back out to the main street, and while waiting for a confrontation, none comes. Instead, Sumire says that she’ll be the number one maiko and for him to come back and visit her then, while he says that she doesn’t need to push herself so hard, which is his way of saying that he accepts Sumire’s path of becoming a maiko.
