The Who's Who of Hipipo
("Open Image In New Tab" highly recommended!)
one of my favourite scenes in "Osomatsu-san: The Hipipo Tribe and the Glistening Fruit" was the climactic chase featuring cameos from many reoccuring and one-off characters (some of whom also appeared in the film's opening) from all three seasons of the anime - some well-known among fans of the franchise, others not so much.
in an attempt to fill in those "not so much" gaps, I proudly present a project I've been looking forward to posting for three months: a visual guide to the name and origin of every character who cameos in the climax and/or opening. see the list in text form under the cut!

In this episode, your Classic Era Grue Crew is joined by Dirk Rogers, a special effects artist with KNB EFX Group and a long-time friend of the show. As the guest host, Dirk chose Matango for this episode’s topic and with the movie’s use of effects – miniatures, suits, prosthetics, set dressing – it’s easy to see why this is one of his favorites.
Dirk was originally drawn to Matango because it featured a lot of the same players from the Godzilla films. He loves the damp (shall we say moist?) atmosphere, the use of color reminiscent of Mario Bava, the sets, and the miniatures. He’s always loved Matango and feels the English title, Attack of the Mushroom People, doesn’t represent the depth of what you get from the film. Dirk also provides valuable insights into the effects work and the documentation of who did what during the production.
Matango is probably Chad’s first exposure to body horror and the horrors of fungus. He loves the way the story ramps up the terror and the cringeworthy fungus-filled sets. As one of Toho’s best, Matango still holds up for him. Daphne is blown away by the colors and the textures of the mushrooms and the fungi, loving it all over again. Jeff agrees that “Attack of the Mushroom People” sounds kind of hokey and doesn’t represent the depth of the story told in Matango. He loves the concept, the story progression, the creepy and downright icky creatures and fungi, and the movie’s cultural and historical relation to the horrors experienced by the Japanese from the atomic bombs of World War II.
Dirk was turned onto the writings of William Hope Hodgson by this movie as it is developed from Hodgson’s short story, “The Voice in the Night.”  During the episode, the crew discusses several versions of this story, all of which are provided through the following links:
Story: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/The_Voice_in_the_Night
Audio version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASIfPcyTAH0
Suspicion (TV series, 1957-1958), Episode 24: “The Voice in the Night” (aired 24 March 1958); from the story by William Hope Hodgson; starring James Donald, Barbara Rush, Patrick Macnee, James Coburn. This is a very poor resolution but the Classic Era Grue-Crew still enjoyed it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ssi6_YWrrxc
If you have been motivated by this episode to catch Matango (and you should be), at the time of this writing, it is available to stream from Classic Horror Movie Channel, Tubi, The Criterion Channel, and various PPV sites. In terms of physical media, Matango is available on DVD.
Gruesome Magazine’s Decades of Horror: The Classic Era records a new episode every two weeks. Up next in their very flexible schedule is one chosen by guest host, the one and only Dave Dreher: The Return of Dracula (1958).
Please let them know how they’re doing! They want to hear from you – the coolest, grooviest fans: leave them a message or leave a comment on the Gruesome Magazine YouTube channel, the site, or email the Decades of Horror: The Classic Era podcast hosts at [email protected]

Police/mystery/crime BL recs that are just *chef's kiss*
•Takahashi Hidebu Stigmata Seikon Sousa and the sequel Stigmata Aikon
A bit bloody but the premise is amazing. A young rookie police investigator has an exceptional gift - he can relive the last dying moments of the victims and help with the investigation, his somewhat cold superintendent is the one who believes in his gift and supports him. Despite the mystical premise this manga is surprisingly realistic.
And the blood spatter is just beautiful as well as the tentative relationship between the main characters. This is a manga that makes hand-holding the best part.
Tumblr media
•CTK On Doorstep
A pickpocket gets caught by an ex-cop who suffers from PTSD and inevitably gets involved with the man. The art is amazing and it's a nice change from the typical frail bishounens.
Tumblr media
•Kodaka Kazuma Hana to Ryuu
Oldie but goodie. It follows the story of Ryuuji whose family was brutally murdered by a rival kumi, he wants nothing to do with the yakuza, but turns out the person who swore to protect him is a member of a clan.
It has a compelling story and amazing artwork.
Tumblr media
• Nakamura Asumiko Anata no Tame ni Doko Made mo
A definition of bacouple. An investigator has finally managed to track down an elusive con artist but the culprit doesn't mind being arrested at all. Hillarity ensues.
A great comedy from Nakamura sensei that I highly recommend
Tumblr media
• Nishida Higashi Yoru ga Owaru Made
A prosecutor is looking into the disappearance of his colleague, a popular guy at work and a handsom fella, but his phantom keeps visiting him in his dreams.
I love the mystical elements in this manga and it has a gripping story.

blanc ch 11 spoilers
it happened!!!!! after years of waiting, rihito & hikaru finally got married. it was nice to see the members of zgok attend as well, but the biggest surprise was rihito’s dad showing up. granted, he only showed up to drop off the CD kumi had made for hikaru before she passed away, but that’s still gotta mean something? as nakamura previously stated on her twitter (said tweet has been removed for some reason, though), there are still some pages yet to be released since they didn’t fit into the latest release of the opera magazine. so i’m hoping there’s more to the issue with rihito and his dad to get some sort of closure. i’m not expecting rihito’s dad to completely accept things given how he’s been up until this point but maybe just a normal conversation without yelling from the dad’s side. that’d be okay.
other than that i feel like things have been resolved relatively well, so it’s a good point to end off the series on. they’ve both come a long way since that fateful day in their second year of high school, and while things still aren’t perfect as they are now, it’ll get better.
it’s going to be sad and strange to see this long-running series end soon. of course it’s got to end sometime but it’s all been so incredibly good that i just want it to keep going. even so, i’m looking forward to what asumiko nakamura has in store for us in the future.

Blanc Ch 8 Translation
EDIT: BLANC HAS BEEN LICENSED IN ENGLISH!! :D It is now released and can be ordered from all the places listed on Seven Seas’ site here: https://sevenseasentertainment.com/books/classmates-vol-6-blanc/ Since deleting a tumblr post from my page won’t delete it everywhere on tumblr, I figured the best thing to do would just be to delete the pictures from my translation and then whenever anyone clicks the read more they’d see this update and the link of where to buy it. So if you want to read it, go buy the official version or request it from your public library! :D Under the cut is my translation for Blanc Ch 8! ^_^ Thank you as always to @aliciacentolla  for letting me use her pictures of the raws for this post! :D Also thank you to Kai for answering my “is this an idiom or a grammar thing I haven’t learned yet?” questions so that I could ensure this is as accurate as possible! ^_^
I’m still working on Ch 7 (this semester killed me @_@) but Ch 8 was so intense that I ended up translating 20 pages the weekend it came out. ^^; So I figured I might as well just finish it up and post it before Ch 7. ^^; I advise you read this chapter somewhere where it’s okay to scream and cry. @_@ Seriously. Have tissues ready. You will need them. T_T
Please support Nakamura-sensei and buy the mangas if you’re able! Vol 1-3 of Doukyuusei are available in English (they call it Classmates) at pretty much all places that sell mangas, and you can buy the rest of the series and the current issues of Opera that contain Blanc on amazon.jp or CDjapan (they even have ebook versions, but they’re always at least 1 issue behind for the magazine)! Also Seven Seas has a survey on their website where you can request titles you want them to license. So if you haven’t yet requested them to license the rest of Doukyuusei (Sora to Hara, O.B., and Blanc), let your voice be heard and fill it out! :D

I read my English copies of Doukyuusei today and it made me love the series even more than I already do. I reread it quite a lot, but I usually skip the very beginning so it was fun to read the first volume again and discover some smaller details I had forgotten about (also to see just how much Nakamura’s artstyle has changed over the years!)
It broke my heart to read Kumi’s introduction and I almost started crying during her scenes, because I love her so much and I hate to be reminded of what’s going on in blanc (I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS OVER CHAPTER 8). The scene were Sajou comes out to her and she meets Kusakabe is one of my favourites in the entire series :’(
Overall it’s a really nice publication. There were a couple of instances were the translation could’ve been smoother, but that’s something I’m very nitpicky about especially since I’ve also read the Japanese volumes and know the language used there, but other than that it’s very high quality and something you should be spending your money on. I hope they’ll license the sequels as well!

Sentai Announces Upcoming Titles
Tumblr media
Sentai Filmworks have unveiled upcoming releases for April as well as new acquisitions:
HOUSTON, TX — February 11, 2021 — Sentai announced today that it acquired rights to the suspense-filled thriller Babylon, the anime series based on Mado Nozaki’s popular light novels. Sentai plans to release the series on Blu-ray as well as digital sell-through via select outlets.
Zen Seizaki, dedicated prosecutor with the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office, is assigned a seemly cut-and-dry case of false advertisement on part of a pharmaceutical company. But what starts as a routine investigation soon turns into something much darker, the strange details of the case painting a portrait of corruption and deceit that permeates the mayoral election being run in the newly formed Shiniki District. Soon Seizaki discovers depravity that puts at risk the very fabric of the Japanese justice system — not to mention Seizaki’s own sense of right and wrong.
The anime is a production of studio Revoroot (FLCL Alternative) and directed by Kiyotaka Suzuki (Psycho-Pass 2); Yutaka Yamada (Vinland Saga) provided the series’ musical composition. Babylon features the vocal talents of Takahiro Sakurai (Psycho-Pass) as Shinobu Kujin, Satsuki Yukino (When They Cry) as Ai Magase and Yuichi Nakamura (Jujutsu Kaisen) as Zen Seizaki. The series will be released on home video, including Blu-ray and digital sell-through, in Spring 2021.
Sentai announced today that it acquired NANA, the 47-episode anime series produced by Madhouse and based on the manga by Ai Yazawa (NEIGHBORHOOD STORY, TENSHI NANKA JA NAI) with 40+ million copies sold. The series has been upconverted from its original format to vivid high definition.
Two twenty-somethings seemingly share nothing in common apart from their first name, but a chance meeting on a train bound for Tokyo sets Nana Komatsu and Nana Osaki on a collision course with destiny. Nana Komatsu, a love-at-first-sight dreamer, aims to find enduring happiness in the big city. Nana Osaki, neo punk rock vocalist, pursues her burning ambitions of musical stardom and worldwide fame. As their fates increasingly intertwine, they each chase their dreams — until the harsh realities of life in big city Tokyo threaten to tear everything apart.
A production of studio Madhouse (No Game, No Life, Parasyte -the maxim-, DEATH NOTE), NANA is directed by Morio Asaka (Chihayafuru, MY Love STORY!!, Cardcaptor Sakura) with series composition by Tomoko Konparu (Blue Spring Ride, Sunday Without God, Glass Mask) and music by Tomoki Hasegawa (Mysterious Girlfriend X, D.N.Angel, Zan Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei). The series stars Romi Park (Land of the Lustrous, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Shaman King) as punk-rocker Nana Osaki and KAORI (Kaleido Star, Final Fantasy: Unlimited, Pokémon: Advanced Generation) as the cheerful Nana Komatsu.
Sentai is planning an HD version for release on digital outlets with an HD home video release to follow.
Sentai announced today that it acquired home video rights to the action thriller series HERO MASK, a Studio Pierrot (Tokyo Ghoul, Bleach) production, through a worldwide licensing arrangement (excluding Asia).
Detective James Blood, member of an elite police unit, pushes the edges of law enforcement to bring down the criminal threats and terrorist organizations plaguing a beautiful metropolitan city. When the murder of Crown Prosecutor Monica Campbell crosses his desk, Blood finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy involving LIVE, a two-faced corporate conglomerate with ties to the sordid underworld of human experimentation. With Sarah Sinclair — the only witness to Campbell’s death — at his side, Blood will have to face an army of mask-wearing superhumans to uncover the truth and stop LIVE before its plans can come to dark fruition…
HERO MASK stars Yasuyuki Kase (The Perfect Insider, 91 Days) as James Blood, Yuuko Kaida (The Promised Neverland, A Certain Scientific Railgun) as Sarah Sinclair, Kouki Uchiyama (Amagi Brilliant Park, Haikyuu!!) as Harry Creighton and Junpei Morita (Eureka Seven, Naruto: Shippuden) as Lennox Gallagher. Director Hiroyasu Aoki (assistant director Hunter x Hunter Movie 2: The Last Mission) provides series composition and the script.
