This has been living in my head rent free since I saw it two days ago and now I'm like Cousin AU, where Toichi still died but whatever happened between the brothers didn't happen (idk if anything actually happened, I can't watch the movie until it's off theaters TvT) so the cousins knew each other and are pretty close. Dunno why Yusaku didn't look into his death (maybe decided it'd be better for it to go unsolved/lied about, which has def happened in canon before and Shinichi did it too in the whole plastic surgery case) But young!Shinichi is like no!! i swear something is up and I will prove it + I will protect my friend/cousin >:( and they work together from the start Introducing the progressive shounen-action-ification of the DetCo series xDD first we get explosions, now we get power creeping!! Don't know if it's been confirmed or denied canonically if Snake is part of the B.O. but if he is that would honestly be hilarious. Part 1: the entirety of Magic Kaito 1412, including the multitude of other thieves. So. Many. Thieves. (not that I'm complaining) Part 2: You've defeated the theives, now you're up against Snake's organization!! Mystery focus potential, but also explosion potential Part 3: You've defeated Snake's organization, but that was merely an introduction into the Black Organization (Shinichi may or may not get shrunk, I haven't decided). Insert ominous foreshadowing and a single clue that spirals Part 4: Some level of B.O. shenanigans, and then a strange woman becomes Ran's English teacher! (Jodie) Part however-long-this-series-will-go-on: the entire world gets involved with the pair at the center of it and somehow the B.O. still hasn't been handled. Vermouth dynamics with Kaito and Shinichi would be SO much fun (would Kaito also get a nickname or would he be brushed off LOL) What's Yusaku doing in all this???? Avoiding his editors, probably. Bonus: The Kudo mansion with a secret room AND an aviary. Just make it Hogwarts at some point. Bonus 2: Agasa and Jii interactions!!! Which I swear has been hinted at in canon that Agasa is the friend and has (unknowingly) helped with KID gadgets. Bonus 3: Agasa actively working with KID on gadgetry would be off. the. rails. Chaos squared.
Okay okay I know the shippers are grieving KaiShin right now BUT
May I offer you platonic/familial KaiShin?
Just think. They may not know it in canon yet, but Shinichi is technically Kaito's only relative who hasn't fucked off and abandoned him
Like at this point Shinichi/Conan probably gives more shits about Kaito/KID than both of Kaito's parents
Imagine the fanfic potential
Them finding out they're related
Kaito half glad and half weirded out that he has another relative who's actually here
Shinichi being baffled at Kaito's fucked family situation
Maybe even Shinichi going off on his dad for seemingly letting Toichi's son believe he's dead
Maybe even Kaito going off on his dad for, well, everything at this point
The drama
Imagine

DP x DCMK (x DC)
Where Danny and Shinichi meet at the Hawaii where's a Ghost Convention (pre-portal and Conan, when they're both around 11–12 years old) since both sets of parents are invested in the topic. (The Fentons because they're the Fentons and Yusaku because he's researching for one of his books).
They become friends and keep contacts through messages, sharing school shenanigans, crushes, cases and family mishaps.
The One Thing that Danny doesn't share, though, is his halfa status.
First, because Shinichi doesn't believe in the supernatural (according to him, magic is just unexplained science) and second, because his change is far from any kind of "normalcy" and Shinichi had categorically stated that he doesn't want anything to do with superheroes, he's just a "normal" detective and they (the Justice League) save the world.
Though, it's not unusual that, if something weird happens in a case, Shinichi asks Danny's opinion and intel since the Fenton's library has "weird"/obscure material. (If the answer gets him too close to superhero-stuff, Shinichi passes the ball to the JL, more specifically to Red Robin, but that's something for a following reblog of this thread.)
So when Shinichi becomes Conan and settles in Ran's home, he contacts our favorite boi.
(A bit late to the @crossoverdanuary party... (^~^;)ゞ Anyway, long post in chat-style, plus an extra, so I decided to use the read more function because it was getting out of hand... (≧▽≦) )
Shinichi: Hey Danny, do you know anything that should be killing you, but instead it shrinks you? Danny: Shrink as in size or age? S: Age D: Hold on, gotta check some books to be sure, but usually anything age-related is dark shit. What's for? Fun or case? S: ...It's for a case D: Well, that didn't sound ominous at all, then gotta go *faster* *few minutes later* D: Okay, the closest thing (still in the Mortal Realm) to what you asked is this jewel most commonly known as "Pandora" (if she knew, she would definitely lose her shit) D: it's a gem hidden inside another gem that glows red under the moonlight D: "if bathed in the light of the Volley Comet, it would shed tears capable of granting eternal life" S: This doesn't sound anything like what I asked you (눈‸눈) D: Cut the sass beanpole and let me continue D: since the legend exist and it's documented, it should be reasonable to presume that someone managed to attain it, right? S: ...right *squinty eyes* D: So if some scientist tried to reproduce the same results in the *scientific way* instead of the magical one, they could have either the original "Tears" or the one who consumed them and run test and experiment on them D: whatever the case, there would be either some inferior or failed products that instead of making you immortal, *de-ages* you, which is the next best thing (i.e. you would live longer) D: but since they were "failures" compared to the immortality elixir, they could definitely become poisons. D: So! Since you were so ominous, was it really for a case or did our dear Professor Agasa dabble in alchemy? 👀 (read) D: Beanpole, I know you read my explanation and since this is really dark shit you *have* to at least give me context D: because among the warnings that the grimoire gave me, there's the thing that you become somewhat cursed S: ...Or you're cursed or you're not, there's no "somewhat" D: He speaks! 🙌 D: Give me *the deets* *long pause* D: *Shinichi Kudo* ಠ_ಠ S: Okay, fine! I can feel your disappointed stare all the way to Japan, stop! >Д< D: Then explain S: Okay S: so you know how I can't leave things alone when they have suspicious all printed on them? D: Your worst defect, yes, but continue D: ...wait D: Shinichi no D: HOW OLD ARE YOU NOW?? S: Still 17, thank you very much D: I mean physically, you little shit, don't dodge the question! S: ... S: ...we think 7 D: What in the Infinite Realms everloving fuck, Shinichi D: Okay, you know what? D: I'm coming to Japan and you can't stop me, you *midget*, I know what you're already going to say D: it's dangerous, yada yada D: nothing I've already seen and fought S: What do you mean?! D: Since you're *such a good detective*, deduce it yourself D: give me your coordinates in the meantime and don't you dare move from that spot S: If you send me Superman or anyone of his creek, I swear to Kami, Danny D: Please, Superman could only desire to be anything like me, now *coordinates* ಠ_ಠ *coordinates sent* D: good boy D: now get ready in 3 S: 3 what? D: 2 D: 1
🕵️👻
A full body shiver run over Shinichi as soon as the "1" appeared on the screen, so he looked up from his phone, searching for where the cold draft could have come from. However, the agency toilet window was closed and the closed door had a good insulation, last time he had checked.
So what...!
"Boo."
Shinichi shrieked with all the high pitch of an elementary schooler, as he whirled around to look at what, or better, who had whispered by his ear.
A white-haired green-eyed floating teenager with a black hazmat suit with white accents grinned almost maniacally at him, showing their fangs predatorily.
Anatomically they looked male and despite the unhinged expression, the body language didn't project "danger". If anything, it was loose and casual as if he (until otherwise stated) belonged here.
The unearthly glow suggested either some substance coating him that gave him that illusion, or there was magic afoot.
Irritation surged inside Shinichi: Danny knew his rules! No direct superhero meeting, only exchange of intel!
"Who are you and why did Fenton send you?" Shinichi gritted, crossing his arms to appear less like a 7 years old.
"You disappoint me, little detective, I thought you would have figured it out at first glance!" The supposed hero pouted, crossing legs and arms midair and staring back at Shinichi. "I guess that your fame had been an exaggeration, after all. Some East Highschool Detective you are!"
The teasing little smirk incensed Shinichi more than alarming him (the other knew his secret!), but the last thought made him pause.
Danny wouldn't betray him like this by informing whatever "superhero" of this situation just to help him without his consent. Their boundaries had been awesome like that and had been respected so far, despite the many trials both had faced.
So who was this person really?
Shinichi's mind focused back into deducing the teen before him, and the more looked, the more disbelief made way in his heart. (...He had said he would be coming to Japan, but not in that instant!)
"No way, Danny?"
"Fucking finally, midget! What took you so long?" Danny huffed, untangling then touching down on his feet and looking him over. "It even gave me time to take a look at your situation!"
"Hey! Your voice is different, so I could deduce it only because "if you exclude the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the Truth"! Since you would never spill my secrets to anyone, this must have been you!" Shinichi gestured to his friend, who flushed green when he registered the meaning of the words.
"Wow," he breathed, sounding pleased, as he scratched his nape, "you would believe that a ghost of me is still me instead of me betraying you, wow!"
"Wait, ghost? I thought you just become a superhero, not that you died!" Despite his insistence on not believing the supernatural, Shinichi had read the Fentons' papers on ghosts (the most recent ones, AKA the "no more biased version" as Danny had called them). And, while he hadn't told his friend this, the scientific breakdown of what makes a ghost what they are, had made Shinichi believe in the existence of ectoplasmic beings.
But to discover that one of his best friends had died, he hadn't known or could have done anything, plus Danny hadn't felt safe enough to tell him until it had become unavoidable, made Shinichi clutch his heart in agony and despair.
Probably sensing the shift and interpreting the action for what that was, Danny's face shifted into regret, as he knelt down before the shrunk detective and a ring of light lit up at his waist, washing over him and leaving a hoodie-and-jeans-clad raven-haired and blue-eyed teenager.
Slowly, as if not to spook a frozen Shinichi, Danny laid a hand on his shoulder, while the other took the free little hand to his NASA hoodies chest and splayed it there, allowing him to feel his heartbeat. As if he had known that only words wouldn't have been enough to convince the detective.
Slowly but surely, feeling Danny's sluggish but steady heartbeat, made Shinichi unclench, then lean against his friend's chest, head tucked under his chin.
Carefully, Danny wrapped his friend in a hug, knowing well that, while physical affection was welcome from him, Japanese social conventions and the Kudo's upbringing had left Shinichi a little adverse to prolonged contact.
As the apparent 7-years-old melted into the embrace and clutched Danny as well, followed by a suspicious wet sensation on his chest, the halfa realized that this was bad.
Shinichi had never sought comfort like that, according to professor Agasa (who Danny did keep in contact with, since he was more a parent than the Kudos), so to do this now...
"It's okay, Shinichi, I'll explain better what happened to me, but it's not your fault." Shinichi shuddered at these words and buried deeper in the embrace, making guilt shoot through Danny. He had caused this breakdown. The least he could do was to help him through it and some.
"And we're gonna find a way to solve what happened to you, I promise."

I always love bad Kuroba parenting being recognised as such. The Kudous aren't quite as bad (always helping Shinichi as Conan, regularly in his life, listening to him) but definitely not that good either in some ways (leaving him in a questionable fostering situation and taking him when he was an actual child to crime scenes as well as getting their neighbour to watch him because they went to America while Shinichi stayed home).
There's not much I can say about the Kudos, other than, you're right. Their parenting was bad and very questionable, it's almost like all the DCMK parents are trying hard to win the bad parent contest.
I like to look on the bright side, I mean at least Yusaku didn't fake his death for 8 years and Yukiko didn't plan a fake funeral for her son.

The Light in my Nightmares, T, chapter 5
Shinichi is finally ready to move back home, and meet all consequences of his past. Ran, as his nurse, has promised to be Shinichi's assistant as long as needed. Yet, she still can't understand what could be that bad that has made him in that shape and making him unwilling to talk about it. If she only would know...
A/N: You know what I kind of hate right now? I hate the fact that when it comes to fanfiction (or generally to writing), I feel like I'm a perfectionist. Yeah, I know. Like for this fic: I used much time to check Araide's eye color since we don't see him these days (and I wondered what happened to Shiratori D: He has also disappeared!), and... well, I think there were many different shades from light blue to dark green. So I decided to use bluish-green. With Yusaku, I was pretty confident, since when I wrote my first ShinRan fic in Finnish almost two years ago (which was bodyswap soulmate AU xD ), I checked for that fic Yusaku's eye color, and they were grey. I somehow remembered it so well that when I started to write this fic, I didn't even bother to check it. Well, two weeks ago I watched episode 1034 and realized that they were more like dark blue D: Or maybe very dark grey? I don't even know anymore, because I have stared at imagines of him too much to make some kind of decision xD
But yeah, maybe I'm going to go change his eyes colors in previous chapters or maybe I just let it be in this story... But anyway, I let you go to read the new chapter! Let's see how they come along now that the surrounding is different :D
Prologue ~ Chapter 1 ~ Chapter 2 ~ Chapter 3 ~ Chapter 4
Chapter 5
~ Ran ~
Ran was a very curious person, but she had manners. She wanted to ask many questions, but she didn’t want to pry.
How has Kudo had enough money to buy this house? Since this was his home and it was well decorated, he must have had this before he came to Safe Haven Center. But how was that possible? In his information, he was the same age as she was. He must have studied something, but even if he got a job, Ran couldn’t see how he could have afforded this home! Well, the loan was a thing, but... But who at that age would need this big home, huh?
Well, maybe Ran was a little jealous, but… still!
At their first visit to Kudo's home, Ran had thought that maybe he had family already. Beautiful wife and children. At first, she thought that his child would be someone older since that one room had shown signs that the children knew how to use a computer and read mystery novels, but when Ran had gotten into her home that night, she had realized how idiot she had been: If Kudo was really 25 years old, how could he have a child who would be a teenager by now? More realistic would be that his child would be something like the age of five, but in that case, that room would have been full of toys.
She hadn't dared to ask from him. In the end, if his family had abandoned him, it could be a painful memory. She didn't want to wake them up.
But she was still curious.
After the first week that Kudo has been home, Ran had started to do her silent research about his family. If he had a wife and children, where were they now? Why they didn't visit during that half of the year when Kudo was in Safe Haven Center? Did they break up and the wife kept the child? But still, Kudo would have the right to see his child. And how bad their divorce had been if the wife wasn't interested in his condition at all?
But as much as she did her research, she couldn't find any sign of a wife or children. No marks, no photos, not... anything. For Ran, it looked like they didn't even exist. The only children's photos she had seen were those photos in the living room's bookshelf. Those same photos that Kudo had turned upside down on their first visit. And... Well, Ran couldn't be sure, but to her, it looked like the only children in those photos through the years were Kudo himself, with his parents.
Well, yes, she may have turned those photos secretly just enough to see what they were.
But back to the point, after seeing those photos, it seemed to her that Kudo's parents had owned the house. People didn't usually keep childhood photos of themselves on the shelves, and even if someone did, Kudo didn't look like a person who would. So, if this was his parents' house that he had inherited, it started to make more sense how a 25-year-old man could have a mansion. But then, what happened to his parents?
Maybe his parents had gotten into an accident and it had somehow shaken Kudo’s world. Who wouldn't be shocked by something like that? And since his parents looked young...
But then again... Over half of the year in an institution because of that... Well, people were different, but she couldn't tell why she felt like it has something more than that. But since she didn't dare to ask directly from the man who didn't seem to be willing to talk about it, she decided that she needs to find out herself or accept the truth that she would never find out.
The next whole week, she tried to talk very common things with him – when they weren’t arguing. It felt weird since in Safe Haven Center they had started to come along very well and talk about things without ending up arguing. But when they came to Kudo's home, it felt like they found out new things to disagree with each other. New house, different rules.
Their first argument was about the fact that Kudo didn’t want to go grocery shopping. Or yes, he wanted, but he would have liked to buy only some convenience foods and leave. But that wasn’t okay to Ran! Of course, it was fine sometimes to buy convenience food, but it wasn’t okay to live with it. So they argued about it in the shop. She felt like she was with a child who just wanted to buy sweets and got a fit of rage just because she said no. When she later complained about it to her best friend, Sonoko, she just said that to her, it sounded more like what a married couple would do. Ran disagreed. Married couples didn't fight in the shop about what they are going to eat! Right?
Their second argument started after the shopping time when they got back to Kudo's home. When she had started to make lunch for them, he got pretty frustrated and annoyed by it. Why did she waste her time on him? Didn’t she have any better things to do? And everything like that. It irritated Ran. Why did he bother by the fact that she was doing food? It didn’t look like he would have done it himself.
She won that fight too - well, kind of. Ran had told him that if he could show her that he can make decent lunch for himself, she would leave. They had stared at each other for a moment before Kudo had snarled and left the kitchen. So Ran had concluded that even though he didn't want to admit it, he wasn't very good at making food - or maybe it had something to do with PTSD?
They argued about going out, because to Ran, it seemed that he didn't leave the house if he didn’t have to. Every time Ran brought that up, he claimed that he had done it at the first thing in the morning - which Ran didn't believe because she came early every morning and stayed late in the evening, and during that time, she couldn't see or hear that Kudo would have left the house. And when she tried to get him outside with her, he never accepted.
One fighting subject, which had started from Safe Haven Center, was Kudo's appearance. During his time in the institution, Ran had tried to get Kudo to be interested of clean up his beard and hair, but he hadn't shown any interest in it. She had let it go, but after they came to Kudo's home and he had started to visit shops to buy some food, Ran had tried nicely to hint to him that it would be a good time to tidy up his face and hair... Which - of course - made him only annoyed. It was another fight and Ran had kind of lost since she knew that it wasn't her place to tell him what he should look like and she couldn't just tidy him while he was sleeping, so she had dropped it. She couldn't understand why Kudo didn't want to do anything, and in the end, even though she may have said rude things during that argument, she didn't say that he couldn't keep a beard and long hair. All she wanted was that he would take care of them from time to time. He would look much cleaner and probably handsome.
Then came the day when Ran was ready to clean the house. They started to fight about it too since Kudo didn’t seem to like the fact that Ran would do it. He claimed to do it himself when the time is, but when Ran tried to ask when that time would be, the man just answered that it is when it is.
“Goddammit, you’re not food or cleaning service”, Kudo shouted at her. “You’re a nurse!”
“So, what about that?” Ran asked coldly.
The man sighed. “You’re supposed to check that I’m doing fine, eating my meds, and leave. Do something with your life.”
“This is my job. Make sure you’re doing okay”, Ran argued.
Kudo spread his arms and looked around. “I’m doing okay, thanks for asking. Can you leave now?”
“No”, Ran answered and turned around. “In my eyes, you’re NOT doing fine until you’re doing proper meals for yourself, doing your own grocery shopping alone, generally visiting outside, and taking care of the house.”
He let out a groan but Ran pretended that she didn’t hear it. She continued her cleaning, trying to ignore Kudo. She was pretty sure that the man was following her with his gaze, ready to start the next argument about something stupid like she had put some decorative item one centimeter wrong way, or...
Ran grabbed for the door handle of the door which she had never before opened. Now that she thought about it, it had never been even open when she had been here.
"Don't touch it!"
Ran froze and turned to look at Kudo. He looked at her angrily, like warning her not to do it. Normally she probably would have let it go, but now? Gosh, now she really wanted to open that door, just to irritate Kudo even more.
“Why not?” she asked. “This room is one in this house, and it needs to be cleaned.”
“You can clean it sometime later”, Kudo answered stubbornly. “That room won’t disappear anywhere.”
“Then, what's in there?” she asked and glanced at the door fast. “What there is that you can’t let me in and clean it properly?”
On that, he didn’t answer. Instead, his eyes moved on that door, staring at it, like making sure that it wouldn’t open on its own. Ran gave him time to answer her question, give her a good reason not to go there, but he didn’t. She shook her head.
“I’m going in”, she said and open the door.
“No, please…”
But it was too late. She had opened it already. At a fast glance, she wondered why he made so much effort not to let her in. In her eyes, it was just a bedroom. But when she looked at better, she saw much more, and she realized that it wasn’t any bedroom – it belonged to two people who were in a relationship. There was a double bed, a beautiful dressing table, a walk-in wardrobe, a window with beautiful curtains, and some shelves that had some kind of trophies and photos…
Full of memories.
“I’m…” she turned around, to apologize to him, but he was gone. She looked around in the hallway, but there was no sign of where he had gone.
She should go after him. Who knows if he got some kind of hallucination, like on that day when they visited here the first time. She should make sure that he was doing okay.
Yet she looked at the room before stepping inside. The bedroom was big and nice, comfy. Kind of beautiful. She went to the wardrobe door and looked inside, seeing so many clothes there. Beautiful dresses among stylish suits and ordinary men's and women's clothes, so many shoes, and hats… Everything that Ran just had only dreamed.
She closed the door and looked at the shelves. There were some photos. They looked like they were taken from some parties. Ran went closer. She recognized Kudo’s parents as she had seen some photos of them in the living room, and she understood more.
This room belonged to his parents.
In one photo there were two beautiful women, the other one looked similar to Kudo’s mother, and the other one had short, fair hair and big glasses. Both smiled, and probably that Kudo’s mother kept some diploma in her hands while the blond one had arms around her. In the other picture, there were many people, men, and women. But in front, there were two people who Ran recognized as Kudo’s parents. The man kept some book in his hands while the woman got her arms around his arm and smiled so proudly. Other people Ran didn’t recognize.
Seems like they were known people, Ran thought and looked at the trophies. And when she read them, she realized who those people were: some of the trophies were addressed to the best actress, Fujimine Yukiko, and some of them to the mystery writer, Kudo Yusaku.
Ran felt something tightening in her chest. She remembered how she had heard and read on the news over half of year ago how that couple had passed away at a young age. Ran remembered that she had cried, since they really have been young, and she had admired Fujimine Yukiko. Like she had been her favorite actress, her role model… She took a part in the funeral with her parents, since they were friends with them. There were so many people, Ran couldn’t even tell who were relatives, who were friends and co-workers, and who just were admirers, but she and her family were just in the background leaving their silent goodbyes to them.
But she didn’t remember seeing Kudo there. But maybe that wasn’t weird at all, since there were so many people, and she was crying.
Ran felt even worse. She couldn’t even imagine how it would feel to lose her own parents. If she had known… Well, she had doubted that since she still didn't believe that parents would leave their child to fight alone with problems, but… Maybe because no one hadn’t confirmed it, she had thought that there was still a chance that they were alive.
She had been the worst.
Ran left the room with a heavy heart and closed the door behind her. She couldn’t tell where Kudo went, but she believed that his room would be a very good guess. She went behind his door and knocked.
“Kudo-san?”
He didn’t answer.
Slowly Ran opened the door. He sat on his bed, back on the door. He looked like he was looking outside from the window, and she couldn’t point out exactly what, but somehow the sight of him made her feel sadder.
“I… I’m so sorry”, she spoke eventually and bowed even though she knew that he wouldn’t see it. “That was my bad. I was so irritated because of our arguments and I… I didn’t think. I should have.” She waited for a moment, but he didn’t say anything. She straightened her spine and looked at his back again. “I… I should have been more careful…”
“It’s okay”, he answered so quietly that Ran barely even heard it. He let his head drop like he was looking somewhere down. “No harm done. I should have said it clearly.”
Well, it would make everything easier if he would just tell her, but at the same time, part of her understood that he didn’t want to talk about it. And she couldn’t demand it. Maybe he would talk to her when the time is right. Maybe he would tell her as soon as he has made peace with it.
Maybe she should cheer him up.
“You know, I… I didn’t know they were your parents”, she said eventually. She got a little sad smile on her lips. “I… I can’t say that I knew your father, but your mother… I admire-“
“Don’t.”
Ran shut her mouth and stared at the back of the young man. “Please, don’t”, she heard the broken whisper, and she felt tears in her eyes. She tried her hardest not to cry because this wasn’t about her. He was the one who was broken, who had lost something important, something dearly, something that every human considers having most of their life. He had lost those two important people from his life that always are considered to be the buttresses of children's lives, someone who they can always turn to and lean on when things are going down.
And since it seemed that there was no one else to be here for him, she should be. She should be that buttress that he had lost, she should help him to stay on his feet.
She took a deep breath, trying to do it so quietly that he wouldn’t notice that it was trembling. “I… Okay. I just… go to do something”, she said and smiled even though he wouldn’t see it. “Just… If you need something, just… call, okay?”
He didn’t answer, but Ran was pretty sure that she saw him give her a little nod. She also nodded, even though it was worthless, and turned to leave.
“Thank you.”
Ran turned to look at him. He was still sitting there, back on her. But she was sure that he had spoken. And it made her smile. Gently she stepped outside and closed the door as softly as she could.
“Hey, Ran! How are you? You have been very busy since we haven’t heard from you for a week.”
“I know, I’m sorry, mom. Yeah, I’m fine. I have one client who needs help and a friend, so I have been there for them.”
“You’re just a sweetheart, Ran. Maybe too good. Remember that you’re not letting anyone think that you’re doing it for free.”
“Mom!”
“I know, but don’t overdo yourself. I mean… I’m proud that you’re helping people and being there for them, but you have to take time to yourself too.”
“I know." Ran hesitated for a moment before opening her mouth again. "By the way mom… You and dad knew Kudos, right? I mean… Kudo Yusaku and Yukiko?”
“Yeah, we did. Why?”
“I was wondering… Do you know how they…” She gulped. Why was it so hard to say out loud? “Left?”
There was a little pause.
“We-well, I can’t say that I know”, her mother answered like thinking. “If I remember right, they weren’t sick, but can’t say for sure since they moved on overseas at some point and we weren’t so much in touch after that.”
“Oh…”
"Why do you ask?"
Ran hesitated. "Well... It kind of came up with my client and... I tried to find out what happened to them, but there wasn't anything", she answered. Not totally lying, but since she still had professional confidentiality, she couldn't tell her. "In the end, they kind of were celebrities, but there was nothing really..."
"Hmmm", her mother hummed. "Well, as I said, we don't know either, but... if you're really that interested, maybe you should ask their son."
“Their… son?” Ran repeated and frowned. Did her mother...
“I think they have one. That high-school detective.”
Oh?
“Hah, well, I think he lost that name since he graduated from high school many years ago. If I remember correctly, he was at your age.”
“High school detective?” Ran repeated. She tried to remember, but she didn't.
“Don’t you remember? He was on the news all the time when you were in high school. Well, he had been after that too, since I have heard that he is the best detective. I think he got his own detective agency. Though it had been some time since I have seen him in any news. Wondering how he was doing.”
He had been that high-school detective who everyone was always talking about? Well, no wonder that Ran hadn't remembered since she hadn't been that interested in him back then, and it felt like his face was everywhere during then.
Ran sighed. But she knew exactly how he was doing nowadays. Sadly, asking him wasn’t an option. At least, not right now.
Maybe this was also her sign that she shouldn’t try to pry other people's past without permission. He would tell her when he was ready. But… still…
“Well, it’s okay”, she answered. “In the end, it’s not my problem. Just got curious and thought if you would know.”
On the next day, she went to the Kudo’s home, as she did every morning. She just opened the door with her keys and went inside. She shouted her greetings but didn’t get any answer. Ran rolled her eyes and was ready to go upstairs to evict that man out of his room, when she saw how the downstairs' bathroom door was ajar and there was light.
“Hey, Kudo-san, I came!” she called and fastly knocked on the door before she opened it. She didn't know what she was thinking - probably nothing - but what she didn't wait for was that instead of Kudo, there stood a young man without a beard. He got scissors in his hand, and he looked like he was trying to cut his hair, but instead, he had stopped and blue eyes were staring at her like she had surprised him by doing something bad.
They just stared at each other for a moment like they were strangers to each other. Well, for Ran’s sake she had seen his face from the photos, and thanks to her mother's reveal from last night, she knew very well that he was that same Kudo Shinichi that she had met over four months ago, but still… Seeing him without that beard had been a kind of shock.
“What… are you doing?” she finally asked.
He frowned. “Are you telling me now that I can’t cut my own hair, huh?”
Ran took a deep breath. Please, calm down. “I don’t want to be rude, but…” She shook her head.
“Make up your mind, woman”, Kudo told her and dropped his hands. “You just told me how terrible I look because of the beard and hair.”
Ran closed her eyes. “I told you that they look terrible because you don’t take care of them”, she corrected and opened her eyes. Well, she had to admit that he looked better without the beard, and he would be handsome with shorter hair, but… “I didn’t mean that you should pluck yourself bald.”
He turned to look at his reflection in the mirror. “Do I… look terrible?”
“I didn’t mean that”, Ran answered gently and smiled. “I didn’t say that, but… You have to understand that even if you cut your hair, you have to know how to do it. I know it’s easy just cut them shorter, but the result would look terrible if you don’t know how to give a final touch.”
He stared at himself for a moment before he met her eyes through the mirror. Ran answered to that look, smiling still gently at him. She wanted him to know that she wouldn’t force him to do anything, and she isn't here to tell him how he should look. If he wanted to cut it himself, he can do it. If it makes him feel better, he could do it. She would support him – even though he would look terrible, but… maybe with time, she could make him do something about it. At least it seemed that he had heard her, thought about it, and decided to do something to his look, and that was already something.
“Can you cut them?”
“What?” Ran asked surprised, taken away from her thoughts. Kudo turned to look at her straight.
“Can you cut my hair? Please?”
Ran stared at those determined eyes for a moment before she glanced at his hair. Well, she had cut sometimes his father’s hair, and there had been some clients that had wanted to tidy up their hair after a long time in the care, but… still…
“I’m not sure if I’m professional”, she said eventually and met his eyes. “But I can reserve a time to barbershop…”
“But you can do it?”
He was stubborn. Ran took a new glance at his hair and wondered if she should. Well, she probably could, but…
“Fine”, she sighed. “I can try.”
“Good”, he answered and gave the scissors to her before left from the bathroom. Ran just stood there and looked after him. She still wasn't sure of this. Why he was in such a hurry to cut his hair? Why couldn’t he wait that she would get him time with the professional? Those people knew what to do. She? She barely knew. She could already hear in her mind how they would argue about this as soon as she would be done.
Maybe she should take out her phone and reserve the time. One of her friends was a hairdresser, she would probably come to cut his hair if Ran just ask her…
Kudo came back with a chair. Ran moved a little so that he could come back in and put that chair in front of the sink and mirror. Ran was ready to start her job, waiting for him to sit down, but instead, that man took off his shirt.
“What..?!” Ran screamed and turned to look away dropping those scissors along the way. “What are you doing?!”
“Taking off my clothes”, he answered simply.
“Taking off my clothes”, Ran repeated quietly shocked, still keeping her eyes away. “God, why?” she asked.
“That we won’t mess them up with my hairs”, he answered.
Well, he had a point. It didn’t seem that he would have any kind of cape that could protect his clothes, so the smartest move would be that he would take off his shirt. But… still…
“Come on, nurse”, she heard him saying. “At your line of job, you have seen naked men before. It’s not so weird.”
“This isn’t the same”, she answered angrily and closed her eyes while taking a deep breath to calm herself down. "Besides, I have a name!"
“How this isn’t the same?” she heard him ask, ignoring her last note. “I’m your client. If I need help with washing myself, you should help me, and that way you would have seen me naked before.”
“But the difference is, you don’t need help with that”, she hissed.
“But I could have. So, what is the difference?”
Ran hated him. She really hated him.
But he wasn’t wrong. She had seen many people naked because some of them had needed help in the shower. She had seen younger and older ones. But for them, she had been professional – like she should. They got human bodies which to be proud of, and there was nothing weird. Of course, some men had been a little… “dirt” with their suggestions, but usually, one bunch on the wall has done the trick. Kudo hasn’t even suggested anything, but still, even the thought of him naked made her nervous.
“It’s not different”, she denied, and she wasn’t even sure if she tried to assure him or herself. “This just took me off guard.”
“Hmm”, he hummed as an answer and didn’t sound impressed. It just irritated her more, so she braced herself and turned to look at him.
She didn’t know what she waited for. He was in good shape, even if Ran wasn’t sure when he had been exercised last time. At least not on her time. Maybe a little underweight, but he had got more weight during the time that Ran had known him, so she wasn't worried. He got some scars on his body: A bigger one on the shoulder, and it looked a little painful, but it probably wasn’t anymore. There were a few little ones, which were almost gone, and one on the stomach. And…
Ran shrieked and raised her hands to cover her eyes. Her cheeks were burning.
“You sure take your time”, she heard him saying. “Enjoying what you see?”
“Shut up”, she screamed and dropped her hands to look at him – his face! “You’re an idiot!”
“What?” he asked and Ran saw a hint of pink on his cheeks. “I wasn’t the one who was checking your naked body!” Then he spread his arms a little like showing off the lower part of him, and again, Ran went to that and looked before moving her eyes away as fast as she could. “And I have boxers! I don’t understand what’s the problem. I should be the one who is ashamed here, but no! Somehow it’s the nurse one who had seen everything.”
“I. Haven’t. Seen. Everything! Just so you know”, she hissed to him, still looking away. Then she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Okay, keep calm, Ran. This isn’t anything weird, not at all. She had seen all kinds of bodies. And as he said, he had at least boxers, so she hasn’t seen anything that she shouldn’t, right? She would just cut his hair fast, and that would be over for today. Yeah, that she would do.
“I know I… I’m not sight for sore eyes, but…” He crouched to take those scissors from the floor, and for some reason, like an instinct, Ran startled and moved away fast, and as soon as she had done it, she saw her mistake. Even if it was just a moment, she had seen how he had frozen for a moment before he had grabbed those scissors. “If you just… could cut my hair, I would be… happy”, he continued and straightened himself. He didn’t meet her gaze, but he offered the scissors to her. “I even pay extra for that. So… please?”
Ran looked at him and felt bad. She didn’t know why, but to her, it looked like she had broken something in him – again. Even when he tried to hide it, pretend that there was nothing wrong, she could see that again, she had hit some soft spot.
Why couldn’t she do anything right with him? If he only would tell her, she would know…
“I didn’t mean it like that, Kudo-san”, she said eventually and grabbed the scissors. “I… I really was just surprised, okay. This took me off-guard. It…” She kept a little pause, staring at the scissors, thinking how she should say it. “It…”
“It doesn’t matter”, he interrupted her. “If you just cut my hair.”
Ran sighed. “I do that”, she promised. “Sit down, okay?”
He did so. Ran went behind him and looked at him through the mirror. She raised her free hand and started to comb his hair with her fingers. They have little tangles.
“How do you want me to cut them?” she asked. She tried to look at his eyes through the mirror, but he was looking down like trying to avoid looking at himself. “Do you want me to take a little away from or cut them shorter, or…?”
He stared somewhere where Ran couldn’t reach. Then he let out a heavy sigh and shrugged. “Do whatever you like”, he answered eventually.
“Whatever you like, huh?” Ran repeated and raised her other eyebrow like asking, but he didn’t see it. “It’s a pretty wide answer.”
“Well, you’re the one who is looking at this face”, he answered with a mocking smile on his lips when he finally looked at her. “So, as soon as you’re finally done with me, I can always grow this mess back.”
Now both of Ran’s eyebrows raised and she smiled mischievously. “Oh, and who is saying I’m going to be done with you at some point?”
He lost his smile when it was his turn to raise another eyebrow. “I know you got easy money from this, but I’m not going to pay for an assistant forever.”
“Oh, is that so”, she said and put the scissors down before laying both of her hands on his shoulders and lowering herself enough that her head was at the same level as his. She smiled as sweetly as she could. “First, just so you know, the money I got from this, isn’t easy”, she said gently. “At this point, you have been the most irritating and complicated client I have had, so I dare to say that I deserve every coin I got from you.”
Kudo let out a dry laugh. “Well, pleasure is all mine”, he said.
“And second: Friends are free.”
“What?” Kudo asked and turned his head to look at her. Ran straightened herself but kept her eyes on him, though now she looked at him straight to his eyes.
“You hear me right”, she answered with a sweet smile. “Even when my contract is going to end with you, I’m still going to be your friend, wanted it or not.”
“I… I don’t want… I don’t need friends”, he claimed.
Ran shook her head and raised her hands on his cheeks, making him turn towards the mirror. “Everyone needs friends, even you”, she said and took the scissors back to her hand, starting again to comb his hair with her fingers. “And until you let me meet your friends, I’m not going to leave you alone, period.” She kept a little break, looking mostly at his hair, thinking what she should do. “So, what kind of cut you would like to?”
“You’re so irritating”, he answered without meeting her eyes.
“You are who you hang out with”, she answered, and when he didn’t say anything, she started to cut his hair. First, she just took bad hair away, waiting for him to tell her how to continue, but since he didn’t say anything, Ran started to take off more. She took much off behind until it was short and neat, except those a few tresses which she didn’t seems to get down as much as she tried: another one on his neck and the other one was higher on the back of his skull. She couldn’t understand how she couldn’t tame those, but she knew that they were as irritating as their owner, and it took everything from her not to go to search for some kind of trimmer and made him bald! Well, it wasn’t like her own hair was any better, it has its own problems, but his… This was ridiculous! They look so stupid! No wonder he got them on those pictures…
Luckily Kudo had been looking somewhere down all the time, or at least every time she had glanced at him, that he hadn’t seen her fight with his hair. And it had been better that way because she was sure that he wouldn’t let her live that down, and she wasn’t in that mood, not after losing the fight for a few tresses.
Then she went to the front and started to take off his bangs. She made them shorter yet let them be long enough to hide mostly his forehead but short enough that his eyes and eyebrows were visible to everyone.
She moved back behind him and looked at her work through the mirror while trying to clean gently his hair away from his face. Then she combed his bangs with her fingers until she was sure that she was ready.
“Here you are”, she announced. She looked through the mirror how Kudo slowly opened his eyes, wiping his face with his hand, probably still having some hairs tickling, before looking up. Ran waited for him to be happy, waiting to see a smile on his face, maybe claiming to be handsome or some other way to tell her indirectly that he was happy with the results, but… He saw himself, and for a moment Ran saw something broken in his eyes before he lowered his gaze.
“Thank you”, he thanked.
Ran frowned. “You don’t like it?” she asked and tried to get that stupid tress from his skull down, but it was worthless. It jumped always back.
“It’s fine”, he answered without looking at her or even showing that he meant it. “It’s… just what I asked. Thanks.”
Ran felt hopeless. Again, she had done something which had hurt that man, but she couldn’t tell what. Or yes, she could tell that she had cut his hair, but to her, it seemed that he wasn't happy with those, and she couldn't understand why.
Or maybe it reminded him of something painful…
Maybe it reminded him of the time before he lost his parents. In the end, this was his look and it seemed that it had been through the years, until the day he hadn’t taken care of himself. Until that day he stopped caring and let them grow, maybe trying to hide something… Be someone else. But she still couldn’t understand why.
And what felt even worse, was the truth that whatever she did to try to cheer that man up, she couldn’t do it. She couldn’t make him smile. Or yes, she could, but they weren’t his true smiles. They were mocking or forced. She wanted to see his true smile.
“I… I don’t know what had happened to you, and I can’t force you to tell me”, she said eventually, still looking at his reflection. “And I don’t even intend to do so”, she continued while still playing with his hair. “I just… I just have one thing that I want to see before we continue with our separated ways.”
“Hm”, he hummed shortly and looked at her. “And what’s that? Seeing me survive alone?”
Ran smiled gently. “I want to see your smile.”
He laughed shortly before forcing a smile on his lips. “Here you are, miss. You have seen it.”
Ran shook her head. “No”, she objected and meet those blue eyes. “I want to see your true, honest smile.”
He let his smile drop while he looked at her. Then he let his gaze drop. He opened his mouth like saying something, but then he shut it. Ran waited if he would try again, but he didn’t. Then she looked at his shoulders before she tried to clean them from his hair.
“Go to take shower while I clean this mess”, she suggested to him. She waited, and when she saw a little nod as an answer, she left the bathroom.

For WIP, I'm curious about One True Self Prevails!
YES, FINALLY! :D Thanks for sending an ask. Anyway, One True Self Prevails is a crossover between Detective Conan and the Persona video games. The basic premise of the fic is that Shinichi and the other characters in Detective Conan/Magic Kaito are now the characters in a Persona Game, and what they do in those roles. I actually published around 10 chapters of this WIP to Ao3 before I realized how horrible out of character I was making Shinichi and some of the other characters (For context, that was my first published fic in the fandom, predating The Field Trip of DOOOMMMM!!!), so I abandoned that fic and began a rewrite.
However, due to me working on several Exchange Projects, the DCMK Fanfiction Server Zine, Field Trip of DOOOMMMM!!!, my inability to focus on anything, and, more recently, Blue Blur and the Silver Bullet, I have only rewritten like a chunk of the prologue. Oh, and here's the snippet: (Below the cut)
Blue. That was the first thing that came into his vision. A rich blue not unlike the color of his eyes. The room he was in was filled with blue. Wait a minute, who was he, questioning why he was in a room filled with blue?
Oh right, He was Shinichi Kudo. Famous high school detective from Teitan High and son of famous mystery writer Yusaku Kudo and famous former actress Yukiko Kudo. Loved by millions and one of the biggest fans of famous literary detective Sherlock Holmes, his main source of inspiration for his detective work.
And this room wasn’t his. He remembered falling asleep on his big queen-sized bed in his parents’ huge mansion, not in some weird dark blue room.
Shinichi looked around the room, slowly slipping out of the hypnopompic state as the cogs in his brain finally kicked into overdrive.
He was laying on a couch, one covered in a velvet blue material that was soft to the touch. The couch was rimmed with lacquered wood, and was long enough to house his body completely on the cushions, which was currently in the fetal position. Right in front of him was a table made with the same lacquered wood as what rimmed the couch, which supported a tea set made of European-decorated porcelain. On the other side of the table was a couch identical to the one he was currently laying on, with even the same shade of blue velvet cloth covering the cushions. Sadly, he couldn’t see any more of the room due to him lying on the couch, so he decided to push himself up off the couch. However, he couldn’t move his body off the couch for some reason, like he was compelled to sit and to only sit. What was going on here-
“Ahhhhhh, welcome to the Velvet Room.”
Shinichi’s eyes snapped open as he heard a voice echo through the room, infecting his mind with its qualities. It was like a mixture of hearing a kind old man and a mysterious eldritch being talking to him, greeting him in this domain. Whatever the hell it belonged to, it gave Shinichi the shivers.
However, that didn’t stop Shinichi from slowly turning his head to the left, only to find a peculiar sight once he killed the cat with his curiosity. It was an old man with a long nose and balding head, sitting behind a desk only illuminated by a single desktop lamp. Its orange glow cast a sinister look on the man and his companion standing behind him, a tall woman with long hair and a blue suit.

shinran oneshot
Fandom: DC
Pairing: Shinran
Excerpt:
“Shinichi,” she whispered, warm blue orbs losing focus as she looked at him, though her smile remained. She rose her hand to caress his cheek (she’s so, so cold). “You found us.”
Her chapped lips met his, and then, “Arigato.”
A/N: I swear that this was supposed to be fluffy but brain said nope, angst-infused it is. Also, I’m no expert in medicine nor the Japanese police system, even criminology for that matter. Spare me. Enjoy!
Day 9
“I should write a book.”
Shinichi’s first instinct was to snort, as he was reminded of Kogoro-ojisan’s—who he should really be calling otousan nowadays—intention of becoming a mystery novelist, much like his actual father. Kudo Yusaku had made millions writing his thrillers, and today, years after the older Kudo patriarch decided to publish his final novel, he was still adding money to the Kudo fortune.
Perhaps his mother playing the titular character in one of Night Baron’s spinoff adaptations, Lady Baron, played a huge factor too. His parents were weird that way, almost like a tag-team, because the moment Kudo Yusaku announced his writing retirement, Kudo Yukiko came out of hers.
It was as if they thought that the world could not handle more than three (he was pretty sure his popularity was on par with his parents, despite his lack of big screen appearances) famous Kudos at a time.
“Finally jumping on the full Kudo experience?” he teased, adjusting himself on the hospital bed where his wife sat, left arm wrapped around her whole frame, right palm covering hers.
Eyes focused on the little bundle in her arms, she hummed before answering, “A best-seller for sure.”
As if on cue, their newborn squirmed before revealing twin orbs that matched his mother’s, unfocused eyes looking up to the woman who went through hell and back prior to his birth.
“Anata,” she called, her tired voice laced with a hint of excitement. “He’s beautiful.”
Day 1
He stood in an abandoned room of an equally abandoned motel located just 50 km on the outskirts of Tokyo, the very location that had him and nearly the whole Tokyo Metropolitan Police Taskforce wrecking their brains and exhausting their resources to find. The identified suspect was one Seisaku Miyazaki, a serial rapist and killer with a tendency for flairs. The 27 crime scenes he left always had distinct blood splatter to them, resulting from either gunshot wounds straight to the temple, or intraoral ones.
Shinichi had never seen a crime scene so gruesome in his life.
As soon as Shinichi stepped into the room, the first thing he should have registered was the blood-spattered left wall and Seisaku’s limp and lifeless body on a chair in the same left corner, his riffle trapped in between his legs.
Instead, Shinichi’s frantic eyes zeroed on the figure on the bed in the middle of the room, merely 10 feet away from Seisaku’s body. The woman had her back against the headboard with an ungodly amount of blood running down her bottom half, arms cocooning a small bundle wrapped with a violet-colored cardigan—the same one she was last saw wearing before her disappearance.
She had her eyes on her baby, as if the newborn was the only person who mattered, seemingly unbothered by the chaos unfolding before her. It took the lead detective a full five seconds to notice that the newborn—oh God, their newborn—was not crying.
He was beside her in her flash, holding her tighter than he should. His wife was again, unbothered, but he noticed that she closed their baby more to her semi-naked chest. The cuts and bruises on her face and torso did not go unnoticed by him. All of Seisaku’s victims had the same markings, but unlike those women who bled from their heads, she was bleeding from bottom down.
Kudo Shinichi screamed for the medic.
It was only then did he hear a soft cry, and he released a breath he did not know he was holding.
“Anata,” she called, finally removing her gaze from their son to look at him “He’s beautiful.”
Her face was pale and hollow, but there was no mistaking the warmth in her eyes and the gentleness of her smile.
His heart both bloomed and broke for her.
“Ran,” he choked out the name he’d been desperately calling for the past few hours. “You’re going to be okay.”
When the medic team finally appeared, his wife first handed the closest medic the baby, “Take care of him, onegai,” she requested, sounding too much like a plea. “He’s a good boy.”
Releasing her son’s warmth, the brunette fell back onto her husband, who caught her naked shoulders, throwing her full weight onto his.
“Shinichi,” she whispered, warm blue orbs losing focus as she looked at him, though her smile remained. She rose her hand to caress his cheek (she’s so, so cold). “You found us.”
Her chapped lips meet his, and then, “Arigato.”
With a sigh of relief, she shut her eyes, and rolled limp further into her husband’s embrace.
Shinichi’s world stood still, the only things registering in his mind were his wife’s cold body, and their newborn’s loud cries in the distant.
Day 8
She was in pure fight mode, forcing her body to function and conscious to stay awake. Once she knew that her child was safe, all the injuries and agony finally caught up to her, and she welcomed the numbing darkness.
The last thing Ran remembered was Shinichi’s rapid heartbeat drumming her ears.
The new mother woke up a week later, on an unfamiliar bed, to the familiar but tormented eyes of her husband.
“Baby,” she mustered breathily, and her husband’s eyes all but softened.
She knew that they were safe.
Day 10
It was another two whole days before she was deemed fit enough to hold her newborn.
“Anata,” she beams, “He’s beautiful.”
“He is,” the Heisei-Reiwa Holmes agreed. “The brat gave the doctors and nurses a fright with his fever, would not stop crying too.”
If his wife was worried, she did not show it. “Is that true?” she cooed, “But you’re okay now, aren’t you sweetheart? Your Papa found us after all.”
Day 0
Kudo Ran did not fit Seisaku Miyazaki’s victim profiles by the slightest. The females he preyed on were usually late teens to early twenties, lived alone, physically petite, and had questionable practices in their private lives.
Or, in the words of Seisaku himself, whores.
Catching the serial killer had been the detective’s top priority, with the death count at 27 and the most recent killings at the heart of Tokyo, it was one of the most challenging cases for him to date.
With half of the murders in Tokyo and the other half in Osaka, it was a no brainer for both Detective of the East and West to join hands, special taskforces from Tokyo and Osaka rallying under their (unofficial) command. The investigation had been ongoing for more than four months before special unit finally made a definite progress, being able to identify a potential victim, shadowing her day and night, coming in to save her just in time from being abducted, and arresting Seisaku’s paid minion.
Genzo Okubo was no Seisaku, the two detectives figured. The latter was confident, methodical, a true psychopathic mastermind, yet the man they caught fumbled with his words, sweated profusely, and most importantly, had little loyalty as he quickly confessed to everything.
The unit rejoiced, but Shinichi and Heiji knew that it was too simple, as if Seisaku wanted Gento to be caught.
By the time they were finished with the guy, it was already 2 a.m.
The lack of miscalls from him wife caught him off guard.
He tried not to panic, reasoning to himself that Ran was probably at her parents’, fell asleep, and his in-laws forgot to inform him. After all, it would not be the first time this had happened. If anything, the Mouris had not stopped fussing over their daughter, and with this case constantly on his mind, Shinichi had not really been the doting husband and father-to-be that he ought to be. Their six-year-old twins were away with his parents somewhere in New York, the elder Kudo couple wanting to give the once-again new parents space to get ready for the youngest Kudo’s arrival.
Halfway through dialing Eri’s number (because his mother-in-law was a light sleeper), Heiji burst into the break room with a suspicious package in his hands.
“Kudo,” the dark-skinned detective panted, as if he just ran up flights of stairs instead of taking the elevator, “that bastard’s got Nee-chan.”
Inside the package were two things: a picture of a very pregnant Kudo Ran, blindfolded and gagged, and a lone platinum wedding band.
Day 10
“He panicked.”
“Hmm?”
“Seisaku-san, he panicked.” His wife stated, the name of her kidnapper rolling of her tongue like she was mentioning a student of hers. “I started having contractions, started bleeding too. He mumbled something about ‘not following his plan’.”
Shinichi rose his brows, puzzled by Ran’s statement, but he let her continue.
“I think,” she paused, readjusting her hold on their son when they boy started to writhe, “that he was halfway out when Seisaku-san decided to shoot himself.”
Her voice was cool, too indifferent, and deep down, Shinichi knew that his wife may be scarred for life.
“Three sounds,” she gulped then snickered. “Me screaming during the final push, the baby’s cries, and the riffle going off.”
Shinichi held her tighter.
“His blood was everywhere, Shinichi. On the walls, the carpet, the bed, my face,” There are now cracks in her voice, the memories flooding her overwhelmed mind as she remembers it all again, “On our baby boy.”
“Ran…” He trailed off, not knowing what to say. His wife and son were alive, but the trauma she went through was something he wished on no one, not even Seisaku himself.
“I didn’t want him to get cold, so I wrapped him with my cardigan. Not the most hygienic, I know, but I didn’t exactly have many choices,” a chuckle. “He locked the door, so I couldn’t escape, and I couldn’t exactly kick the door open, my energy was spent on giving birth. So, I started breastfeeding the baby, burping him…making sure he was alive long enough for you to find us.”
Something in him shattered even more.
Ran averted her eyes away from their son to look at her husband, their faces only a few centimeters apart. There were no tears in their eyes, the pain and regret that remained in their hearts too crushing to be expressed by mere crying. “I’m safe, our boy is safe, because you found us. None of this is your fault, so please, Anata,” she kisses him before continuing, “don’t blame yourself.”
Shinichi could not imagine what life would be without her. She was his wife, partner, lover, best friend, soulmate, the mother of his children, his world, his everything.
“Okay,” he promised simply, capturing her lips for a second time before kissing her forehead. “I love you.”
He felt her smiling into his neck, and at that moment, nothing was wrong; they were whole.
They stayed like that for a few more moments, savoring the peaceful yet short time they had with their baby boy before one of the nurses took him away for the night.
Day 11
“Your book,” Shinichi remembered far into the night. “What are you going to write about?”
A mischievous look twinkled in Ran’s eyes, and the man knows that his wife will heal just fine. “Kidnapped 101.”
- end
A/N: Nope, not their firstborn. And I also imagine that Ran has had her fair share of getting kidnapped so might as well write a book on it lmao.

#Spoiler_Conan
Based on the current case (Chapter 1088).. At the end of the case, there is a great possibility that Kuroda will know that Shinichi is alive as he has already appeared in Kyoto.. The question now is: Will we witness at the end of the case a communication between Kuroda and Amuro telling him that Kudo Shinichi is still alive?? Will Amuro report this information to Rum then?? Will we see anything about the tea party and what exactly happened during that meeting?? So now, Amuro did not give any response to Yusaku and Akai after the tea meeting!! It is not known if he accepted their offer or not, whatever!!
if ever amuro finds out anything about conan being kudo shinichi, i don't think he'll tell anyone, even if it's kuroda. since at the end of police women serial murder case, he didn't even tell kuroda about the tea party, so i see no reason for amuro to tell him that (i believe what they talked about the tea party was about shinichi, since shinichi probably told them amuro is gonna investigate about him, but he does not know what his parents did about that). though if ever kuroda finds out the truth, he might tell amuro. though i'm more curious to see how kuroda would react since we know his he has an interest w conan (like their first meeting, trusting conan, and at the end of the police women serial murder case where he asks amuro about conan).
and like i said before, i see no reason for amuro to tell rum about shinichi yet bc first he's offered something by the kudos, and if he does that he'll just unnecessarily make an enemy out of them and the fbi, as well as vermouth.
and although amuro still doesn't give them his answer about the tea party, only because akai is involved. but i believe they'll have a ceasefire and take up whatever the kudos did offer.

Rating: General with slight Teen and up
Starring: Kaito, Shinichi and his eccentric parents. It's a KaiShin btw.
<<<><><><>>>
It was a quiet and tranquil day in the Kudo mansion. Shinichi had no cases to tend to and no extra university work to finish. It was a rare day to just relax and take it easy. He had sat down with his favorite Holmes book and a cup of coffee in his favorite armchair. The pages flipping and the quiet ticking of the clock was the only sound in the whole library and that was exactly how he wanted it. He picks up the cup of coffee into his palms and inhales the aromatic scent, it wafted over his senses making him sigh content. Everything was perfect.
He takes a long slow sip of the coffee letting it gently smooth over his taste buds. Pure bliss. It didn’t last long.
He could hear the moment the tranquility shattered in the form of the rattling of keys and the slamming of the front door. He blinked and froze with the cup at his lips. The unexpected sound making him just stare uncomprehendingly at the opposite wall. He wasn’t expecting anyone, maybe KID if he was so inclined. But no one who had access to his house keys.
“Shinichi! We are home!” He spilled the coffee all over his shirt at the familiar voice calling him from the foyer.
Oh no. Oh no no no no. His parents are home. No please not now, not today. Just give him one day to relax in peace and quiet. Was that too much to ask for?
He rushed out of the library and out into the hall to see his parents putting down their luggage. His mother was hanging up her coat when she spotted him, her face lighting up as she saw her son. His father just nodded to him in greeting. “Shin-chan~” his mother singsonged happily.
“Hey- mom and dad… you’re home... early” he smiled awkwardly at them.
His mother walked up to him with open arms and incased him in a bone-crushing hug. “I’ve missed you so much!” she cried dramatically. “Look how big you have gotten!” He looked to his dad for help. His father just smiled, the traitor.
When his mother finally let go, she frowned at his shirt. "Why do you have coffee all over your shirt?" She asked slowly. She begins patting her own shirt for dampness. Shinichi shrugged his shoulders "I was a bit careless…" he lied before asking “Why are you here? You could have called in advance... and warned me” he says with a bit of a strained smile on his face.
His mother pouted childishly “Do we need a reason to come visit our favorite son?” Shinichi's brow twitched “I’m your only son last time I checked” at least as far as he knew. His mother just grins at his grumpiness.
"Now now Shinichi, this is our house too" his father pointed out. Which was true of course, but so not the point.
"You certainly don't act like it. You never visit and when you do, it's always out of the blue" he grouses.
Always, they don't contact him for months on end and suddenly they just show up out of nowhere and expect him to be happy about it. He didn't mind it all that much when he was younger. But as he grew older, the more he realized how little his parents actually checked up on him. It took KID to point it out to him though.
“Mou, why are you being so stingy?” his mother wails with a pout, like she was a 5 year old kid and not a woman in her late 30s. Shinichi ignores her antics with the grace of someone accustomed to it and coughs awkwardly
“So, how long will you be staying?” he asks casually. He wanted to be alone again as soon as possible.
His mother juts out her bottom lip with an expression of 'sad mother', but it was all crocodile tears.
“Please Shin-chan, we just got here. Can’t you be kinder to your parents?” she couldn't make him sad for her with that act, he was immune by now. She looks to his father with big tear-filled eyes "Yusaku~" she sniffs. Though his father wasn't immune unfortunately.
“Your mother is right you know” he says after giving in. He knew full well she was acting but gave in nonetheless.
"But to answer your question son, we will be staying for 3 weeks" he says.
3 whole weeks?… he was going to go insane.
Suddenly out of nowhere his mother gasps “Are you hiding something you don’t want us to see?” she giggles. Her expression doing a 180. "You know your mother has already seen everything, there is nothing to hide."
Shinichi splutters, unable to hide his embarrassment “Omg mom no, there is nothing like that” he vehemently denies. He couldn't very well tell them he was dating Kaitou KID after all, or about all they do.
His mother narrows her eyes in suspicion at his claims. “Oh really? Nothing at all?" She says, incredibly suspicious.
Shinichi can feel himself sweating "Nope" he says a bit too quickly.
Before his mother can strap him down in a chair to interrogate him or something along those lines. His father interrupts them with
“Why don’t you go make us some tea while we go pack up?” his father suggests, ever the diplomat in their family. But only when it suits him.
Shinichi sighs but agrees easily enough. As long as he could be alone with his thoughts for a few moments.
While his parents drag up their luggage to their room, Shinichi goes into the kitchen to start brewing some tea. While he waits for the water to boil he looks longingly at his coffee maker. Maybe he should make himself a cup… or a pot. He would need it.
He starts the coffee maker and lets his mind wander as the grind slowly becomes the lovely brew he loves. How was he going to survive them staying here for 3 whole weeks? He would go insane in the first 3 days.
Maybe he could plan out a few trips for his parents to make them stay out of the house as much as possible. The hot springs could work well enough, or a museum. The only thing is that they would drag him with them, which wasn't ideal… How was he going to survive this!?
He mutters plans to himself for several minutes. He is so distracted he doesn't notice the new person in the room that sneakily approaches him.
He gets snapped out of his planning when a kiss meets his cheek. A smooth whisper in his ear "Hello Shinichi" The detective automatically put a hand into the soft locks and dragged him back for another kiss, this time on his lips. "Hello KID, fancy meeting you here" he says. He gets a soft grin for his troubles.
The magician looks down at his shirt and frowns at the coffee stain "What happened here?" He asks even as he quick-switches him into a new fresh shirt. Shinichi smiles as he feels some of his tension slipping away. "Just a bit of a spill. Thank you"
"Any time" is his fond reply.
Shinichi can't help but tease "Are you here to steal my heart away?" a bit playfully.
KID smirks at his antics "No, but that can be arranged"
He then surprised the detective by going down on one knee. He can feel his brain spluttering and restarting several times as KID poofs out a small box into his hands.
He looks up at him with so much love that it melts Shinichi's heart. "Will you marry me?" He asks while opening the box. His gaze was hopeful and sweet, oh so sweet. Shinichi's heart does little jaunty jumps in his chest. He would love to.
The moment breaks as Shinichi suddenly remembers they aren't alone in the house. "Oh no" he utters a bit panicked, missing KID's hurt expression. He starts to push at him to leave "You have to leave right now, you can't stay here" the magician's expression turns even sadder. This time he noticed.
"Oh no, KID, not because of that. They will see you" he tries to explain. His expression changed from sad to confused. "They?" He asked.
It was too late. His mother was already in the doorway. Her smile turning up several watts.
"Iiiiiih!" His mother exclaimed in an incoherent happy noise. "My little Shin-chan is getting married!"
Shinichi groans and hides his increasingly red face on KID's shoulder. The magician just looked stunned and super confused at the lady nearly jumping in happiness. "Is that your mother…?" He asks slowly.
"Yes unfortunately" is all he could say.
"Yusaku look, look!" She exclaimed as her husband joined her in the doorway. "Shin-chan is getting married!" His father takes in the scene of Kaitou KID and his son standing very close in his kitchen and feels his mind go blank. What.
Shinichi gets annoyed at their gawking "Mom, dad. A little privacy please"
His mother just continues right over him "You are dating KID and you didn't tell us?" She says dramatically "And now you are getting married, why don't a mother get to know these things?"
Shinichi can feel his brow twitch "Well, you never call, so it's a bit hard to keep you updated" she ignores his grumpy reply. "I'm so happy, my little boy is getting married! Go on and tell him your answer!"
KID unsticks his tongue "uuuh, should I just, you know. Leave?" Shinichi puts up his hands and motions for him to stay "no, please stay"
His mother continues to watch them and he sighs at the fact his mother can't take a hint and leave them alone on her own. "If you could you know, leave us some privacy that would be great" he tries. His father finally seems to snap out of it and drags his wife away. He gives him an awkward thumbs up and a "good luck son" before they retreat into the living room. A bit too easily if you asked him, but there were more important matters.
He turned back to his confused lover with a sigh of relief and gave him a disarming smile. "Hey" he tries. KID just continues to stare off into the living room and back to him before he again asks "Should I just… go?"
Shinichi panicked slightly, he hasn't told him his answer yet. He couldn't quite manage to gather his thoughts though. So all his words just tumbled out in a mess. "Yes…. NO! I mean that yes, I’ll marry you”
KID's expression slowly lit up into a happy smile. He picked the detective up and twirled them around until his cape flowed around them dramatically. He then let him go and stepped back to quick-change. After a small amount of smoke dissipated there stood a young man in a fancy suit holding out a few blue roses in an artful bouquet.
"Kuroba Kaito" he started. Shinichi could feel his heart hammering in his chest at the reveal of his name. "Magician extraordinaire and university student at your service~" Shinichi smiled and took the flowers, before going in for a soft hug. They touched their foreheads togeter snd looked into each other's eyes, exchanging "I love you" as they did.
He suddenly hears his father splutter and yell from the living room "Wait, you didn't even know his name and you agreed to marry him!?" In a very unusual display of emotion. That wasn't like him at all. But more importantly, how did he hear them.
His mother giggles "Oh Yu-chan, stop being so dramatic. It's romantic" his father does a strange noise between a dog whine and a cat's fighting yell. "That isn't the appropriate order" he complains. How unusual.
He glances to the wall suspiciously and sees the little device sitting on the door jamb. Shinichi huffs, "Mom, dad. Didn't we agree on privacy?" He calls over to them.
His parents looked out of the room next door "We did give you privacy" his mother says innocently.
Shinichi pointedly holds up the camera they had put down to watch them on the living room TV "I wouldn't call this privacy!" He scolds. Why are they always so-
"But we left the room Shin-chan" hos mother says in defence, like that would make any difference whatsoever.
"Your mother has a point" his father agrees, finally back to his normal senses. But again why do they do this.
Shinichi massages the bridge of his nose "That is so not the point!" He yells. "Seriously, why do you insist on doing these things?"
His mother comes out of the living room with her hands on her hips "Of course we want to see your precious moment"
"But that doesn't make it right to spy on us" he growls.
"But Shin-chan~" she whines.
Kaito just hangs back and watches as the Kudo family bickers. What an unusual family dynamic they had. And his parents had been shocked, but adapted fairly quickly. He was just happy they seemed to accept it so easily.
He watches as Shinichi becomes more and more agitated with his parents starting to poke and prod him about Kaito. He defends against their words like a professional defendant.
He wanders forward and puts his chin on his shoulder and a hand at his hip. Shinichi just rolls with it and puts his own hand on Kaitos' hip. Melding into his side like he belonged there. He really loves his detective.

I am several days late but at least it's finally done! Hope you enjoyed it nonetheless.

Hello! You're definitely one of my favourite dc blogs (mostly shinran for me coz I will die for them) and I loooove reading you analysis, opinions, hypothesis etc. So a question for you, assuming shinran will get married in the future, how do you think Ran and Yusaku will interact? We know the Kudos love her (all 3 if them *coughs*), but could you imagine what a one-on-one father-in-law!Yusaku and daughter-in-law!Ran scenario would look like? Thanks and stay safe!
Hello there! Ah~ 💕 thank you so much, anon, I'm happy you enjoy the things I post! You're very sweet.
Onto your question:
As you say, all the Kudos have a good relationship with Ran, everyone likes her (who couldn't, honestly? She's an angel)
Shinichi... Well. You know. Lmao
Yukiko adores her, she's always super nice with her and truly already kinda treats her as her daughter in law, so there's no question there about how she's gonna act towards her.
Now, about Yusaku. Sometimes I see people saying that he's cold. And honestly? I don't really see it outside of cases. We all know he's a nice man, but he's also really sweet when he wants to, I mean, look at him with Yukiko, he looks like he melts everytime she's close. He puts up with all her shenanigans and is truly her "partner in crime" and stuff. He's whipped for her and I feel like he also loses his cool when it comes to the people he loves (not as much as Shinichi, because he just straight up goes ballistic, but yeah, he loses his composure a little bit). And also, let me tell you: Yusaku is truly a pushover when it comes to Yukiko, he really does whatever she wants because he loves her so much lmao
Now, Yusaku has known Ran since she was little, add to that the fact that he knows how much Shinichi truly loves her, so I'm sure he would be really nice to her too. He might not really show it as much as Yukiko does because her and Sonoko are the shinran ship squad leaders, but you can tell that Yusaku also likes them together, remember the teasing when Shinichi refused to go with them to the USA? Remember his soft smile as he saw them walking away in the ONE remake? Oh yeah, this man is also a shipper at heart (Shinichi got this shipping thing out of his parents, both of them).
My point is, Yusaku will treat Ran like a princess, you can't change my mind.

Do you think that behind that cool boy mask, Shinichi is actually an insecure person?
First of all let me apologize for being a little shit and answering your ask now, pretty much three whole ass months after you sent it. I had a lot of stuff going on back then and now that I’m in quarantine I’m reconnecting with Conan and have more free time, so I’m slowly getting to the unanswered asks lying around in my askbox.
I actually really love this question and the minute I got it I wanted to answer it, but alas, I am lil shit.
But fret not because I now have the time and energy. Let’s do this:
The short answer is yes. 100% absolutely yes.
But y’all know me by now. I’ve never been one for short answers.
Allow me to refer back to the Ran GIRL/Shinichi BOY files because they pretty much set the basis for what I’m about to argue. I’ve mentioned numerous times before and by now I expect y’all are tired of reading it, but those files pretty significantly explain that up until Shinichi meets Ran, he has no friends. Literally. No friends. Like, at all. And so I’m not gonna bore you with the details again but it’s essentially clear that Shinichi was somewhat bullied as a kid before meeting Ran.
Which pretty much sets you up for a life full of insecurities, let me tell you.
So then he meets Ran --and Sonoko, she kinda also plays somewhat of a key role here-- and slowly he starts making new friends, and then the whole deduction thing starts happening and my man starts gaining confidence.
Ah, but here’s the catch: it’s a confidence linked to detective work and detective work ONLY.
It’s an important distinction and this is basically my point: Shinichi is pretty confident in his abilities as a detective, and yet does not at all believe in himself when it comes to matters of the heart.
He’s 100% sure he’s a great detective: the facts back him up. A very quick check of his case records is enough to figure that much out. But his sentimental record is miles away from his case-solving record.
Because Shinichi is pretty much a dumbass, isn’t he? The whole reason why it takes him TWENTY FUCKING YEARS to tell Ran that he likes her --despite knowing for sure that she likes him back-- is that he’s an insecure motherfucker who honestly isn’t sure a) how to say it b) when to say it and who c) actually believes Ran might’ve changed her mind about him. And this last bit is important. Really think about it: how many times, throughout the series, have we seen Shinichi doubt whether Ran still feels the same way? THOUSANDS. MILLIONS. EVERY FUCKING DAY SHINICHI KUDO WAKES UP WORRIED THAT RAN MAY HAVE SEEN THROUGH THE FAÇADE AND HAS FINALLY REALIZED HE’S NOTHING MORE THAN A GOOD FOR NOTHING GUY WHO IS HURTING HER AND MAKING HER WAIT AND CAUSING HER PAIN.
It certainly doesn’t make matters any easier that all of that is half-true, by the way.
Even after Kyoto, he has to recheck his messages to make sure Ran really wants to date him and that that whole conversation really took place because he can’t fucking believe that some ethereal goddess like her could love him, a stupid detective who can’t even appear before her own eyes.
And I think I literally just quoted the conversation he has with Haibara after the Valentine’s Day Case.
Where that insecurity comes from other than that first episode of bullying, I can’t really say. It may come from his upbringing, cause we all know that competitive relationship he’s got going on with Yusaku certainly hasn’t helped him psychologically. You could argue that that would affect him intellectually, which, yeah, certainly, I’m 100% with you on that, Shinichi still feels, on some level, that he’s constantly having to prove himself worthy when he solves shit. But that’s gotta leave an emotional scar as well. It may also be deeply buried abandonment issues stemming from the fact that his fucking parents fucking left him when he was like 14. Granted we’ve never seen much of those issues being brought up by Shinichi and we generally just assume he is a-ok about it and doesn’t really care, but that’s got to affect you somehow.
I will say this in favor of the way the Kudos brought him up though, and it’s an epiphany I once reached answering an ask, actually, and it was very revealing (and this sentence is getting out of hand at this point) but it’s the fact that they’ve always kinda shown physical affection towards him. Yukiko is more responsible for that, but I really think the Kudo household was a very physically affectionate one and so in that aspect, Shinichi is rather advanced because --more recently too-- he hasn’t let his shyness and embarrassment get in the way of being --or trying to be-- physically affectionate.
(I mean, he tried to make out with Ran TWICE. So, you know. There’s that.)
So anyway my point is that yes, Shinichi is actually insecure not-so-deep down, and people often don’t realize he is, and I think that’s one of the reasons he is constantly misinterpreted and misjudged.

What are some of your thoughts on Vrains so far?
Oh I love it! I am so glad about how they’ve been writing Vrains so far!!
Things that I liked:
I love Yusaku okay
I love Takeru too
and I love Ryoken as well asdfghj
the plot is actually consistent (way more than previous ygo series anyway)
Yusaku has some Yusei vibe and that is amazing to me. They could be besties, I feel it
the protag has an actual trauma to deal with, just like other characters of Vrains do (PTSD in Yugioh? wow)
even if the duels are pretty complicated and long (the card game changed a lot…) they’re still very well managed, kudos to the animators
all the different summonings!!! even rituals! that was amazing
I loved the shift from Knights of Hanoi being the big evil enemy to being the allies the protags desperately needed. They were also very honest and that was very much appreciated
Lightning was a good villain… very cruel… very good
AI’s decision of fighting humans is still a mystery but I am sure the writers won’t let me down
AI’s human form is too pretty ??? that’s illegal
I don’t know how AI could possibly be modeled after Yusaku but that makes it even funnier to me
ROBOPPI IS ADORABLE
Emma is amazing !!!!!! one of the top fav Yugioh girls for sure !!!!!!!
I actually liked Flame a lot too? fav Ignis (together with AI)
some eps’ animation was flawless…. my heart rejoices
Things that I didn’t really like:
Go Onizuka’s development was utterly CHAOTIC (he also kept losing duels, bruh that’s so sad, I’d question my existence too)
Aoi’s development was CHAOTIC as well (I still don’t get the point of Blue Girl)
Kusanagi lost many points for me, especially after the duel he was forced to have with Yusaku e.e
Bohman was also a weird character, I disliked him more than I liked him
Brave Max genuinely ANNOYS me every time he’s on the screen, his adoration for Playmaker is disturbing, please delete him!!!!
too much screen was given to the frog and bird journalists lmao they annoyed me too
what happened to Yusaku’s parents… are they dead… are they alive… we don’t know, I wanna know
there was one episode (spoiler, when AI left Yusaku while dueling Bohman) that was PAINFULLY BAD ANIMATED. I cringed throughout the whole thing and couldn’t enjoy a single frame ughhh (which is a shame considering all the feels the episode was supposed to give us)

A whole detective conan AU? You can't just leave it at that, c'mon spill!
(sorry this took so long, the first time I typed it up the power went out right as I finished and i needed some time before I went back to it)
This actually ties in with a crossover of mine that ended up being pretty much the most popular thing I ever did in the Phantom - The Impossible Murder/Acquittal, a DC/DP crossover.
To be perfectly honest, I don’t remember where the idea first came from (it’s been a decade after all) It might have been me. It might have been a comment a reader made. I truly don’t remember. It started with Danny and Co. being freaked out by the number of murders Conan ran into. Of course, the question of why was raised and the answered ended up being Shinichi is basically one third Death God.
(more under Cut)
When Yukiko Kudo was two months pregnant she was in an accident on her motorcycle (she had no idea she was pregnant at the time). While the doctors were trying to fix her up she was having an out of body experience that lead to her meeting Death incarnate, who had come to collect the soul of the fetus.
Yukiko was having none of that, which Death was truly exasperated with. “You didn’t even no you had a child. You can not be this attached.” He bemoaned humanities need to fight against him, despite him being a part of the natural order. Yukiko argued that he was a coward for never letting himself be attached to anyone, basically stating he would be just as ‘illogical’ and he knew it.
The end result of this was bet between them. The child would be born, only with three parents, not two. Yukiko was pleased with herself for saving her child, Death wondered how he had been talked into this, and Yusaku…Yusaku never said it, but he felt a bit cuckolded.
That would end up being a problem.
It might not have been if he had talked about it early on, but he told himself he was being stupid. Shinichi looked so much like him after all. And he certainly had Yusaku’s intelligence. Yukiko’s sense of theatrics, he didn’t quite know what to do with, but it didn’t bother him. But the way the child would inevitable be draw to locations where someone had died, or was about to always reminded him of Shincihi’s other parent.
(Death was looking over Shinichi, but wasn’t an active participant in raising him. Yusaku had asked him not to, since they wanted Shinichi to have as normal a childhood as he could. Death took that at face value)
This basically ended with Yusaku vacillating between trying to raise Shinihci to be just like him, and not wanting to see him at all. When Shinichi was 13, Yusaku ended up doing what he always did with his problems, he ran away.
Shinichi didn’t take it personally. By that point he knew both his parents had a tenancy to run from their responsibilities, and this was just one more example. He didn’t think anything of it until after The Impossible Acquittal.
At that point there was simply too much evidence that something being very wrong with him. He could trace the incidents back as far as he could remember, but knew they went further than that. He ended up getting his parents back in Japan and asked them. Yukiko figured it was time to tell him the whole story. After all, normal and Shinichi had parted ways that night in the amusement park, and once he he actually started looking into it, she knew nothing could stop him from finding the truth.
Shinichi really didn’t know how to take it. He was still knew to accepting the supernatural was real, him being a part of it was hard to accept. He asked his father to confirm, and that’s where it went wrong. Over a decade and a half of insecurities came out when Shinichi asked about his second father. And as much as he regretted it, the damage was done.
The previous ‘not taking it personally’ about being left on his own was now very personal. Yukiko was furious with her husband, and Yusaku handling things in his usual manner (running away) did not help.
However, one good thing about it was Shinichi’s other Dad was able to reveal himself. After all, in terms of living a normal life, that ship has sailed. Death crafted a living persona to act as Conan’s father and the two got a long overdue chance to get to know each other.
Yukiko stayed with them for a short while, and got to know Death better as a friend and coparent. Afterwards she went to hunt down her errant husband and made the family work out their issues. Things were rough between Shinichi and Yusaku for a while, but they eventually worked through it.
(Meanwhile Danny and Valerie got together, Kaito Kid had a lot of fun using some new ghost allies to pull pranks, and Takagi ended up adopting Dani)

((The question of Tsutomu being alive or dead is something that’s bugging at me because both have merit.
In favor of him being alive, there is how no body was ever found. First, there is the matter of how one does not leave a gun hanging on the wall in one act (in this case, the fact that no body was found) and not have the gun go off by the end (in this case, him reappearing or the body being found).
Second, though the Organization is fond of leaving corpses, they also tend not to care about leaving identifiable corpses, so long as it isn’t traced back to them (ie Pisco being burned because of what he fucked up). Everyone else can be killed without much concern. They’re entirely fine with killing Kudo, despite his notoriety. They’re fine with killing Kogoro and Conan during the FBI versus Organization arc.Their issue with Kohji’s death was the evidence left behind, not that he was killed. They’re also quite keen on following up with deaths, such as keeping a list of the APTX and prototype victims.
There’s also the structure several have noted on previously, where major players’ parents are basically them, but better at certain skills. This shows up with Shinichi and Yusaku, Kaito and Toichi, and so on.
The point where this “parents are children but better” bit is an issue would be how Shuichi (most obvious candidate, since he’s his kid and managed a faked death himself) has a lot in common with Mary, particularly a streak of paranoia and general avoidance of outside contact after their supposed deaths. And Masumi says Shuukichi’s supposed to be more like Tsutomu.
However, other details make more sense if he’s dead.
First, there are the story structure issues. Unlike Shuichi, whom we knew prior to the faked death so we know how he generally behaves, and whom we saw the lead-up to the faked death that allowed the deducing of the trick, Tsutomu doesn’t have that. Tsutomu was introduced only incidentally in dialogue initially courtesy of Masumi, and only with the Ripples case do we get flashbacks of how he acted at all. It would take some more information to get a firmer grasp on the situation.
Second, there’s the logistics issues of a faked death and how he would have managed to evade them for seventeen years. Keep in mind that he did not have help from his family- they think he’s dead or that it’s unlikely he’s alive. It’s also a bit of an issue, as most would think that after the heat died down a bit, he would come back to his family. With how scarily competent they all are, sticking together or staying in contact would have been a wise move.
This then leads to the theories that he either couldn’t contact them for some reason or else that he’s a dick. (The latter being a current issue regarding the retcon in Magic Kaito.)
The “couldn’t contact” theories fall into a few major camps- either he’s involved in undercover work within the Organization, or else that he’s investigated enough to know that his living family is being watched so contacting them is dangerous, or he was incapacitated in some major way. The former two often results in theories that Wakita is Tsutomu. The latter usually results in the theory that Kuroda is Tsutomu, because of the ten year coma and missing memories.
There’s also another point that could happen with the “he’s dead” camp. The obvious being that characters have been introduced posthumously (Scotch, Matsuda, Ethan), so them being mentioned is not inherently a reason for them to still be alive.
