I watched kraven the hunter again a while ago and it both seems better and worse than I remember it from the first time

Major spoilers from now on mainly focusing on Nikolai, Sergei and Dimitri

Funny how both brothers basically hated their father and wanted to be nothing like him but ended up being exactly like him but in different ways. Nikolai always demanded they be strong and brave, and Sergei is exactly that - so strong, brave and skilled at hunting that he became Kraven the Hunter. His own father hired him to take out a threat which he himself couldn't handle. In that last scene with him, he is proud of his son and maybe has been all that time but couldn't bring himself to admit it (because you always have to be strong, show no weakness). Sergei practically killed his own father just like he was willing to sacrifice his children for his own ends.

Dimitri, on the other hand, is weak and cowardly in his father's eyes, he cannot even defend himself. He never was like his father and never wanted to be and yet in the end he took over his father's business and became like him. He triggers Sergei at the end by telling him he's like Nikolai the same way Nikolai triggered him.

And what are we left with? A dead father whose ruthless parenting scarred his sons for life, so that even after his death it echoes in their actions. Could've been Shakespearean, but what can you do...

i've had like, ~ 24 hours to sit and process so here's what i liked and didn't like about kraven the hunter (the movie, ofc)

i'll start with all the things i liked

i LOVED every single aspect of the family dynamics. while i think they could've expanded on sergei's relationship w/ his mother, i think they made a safe choice to keep it vague like the comics did

piggybacking, sergei living in the place his mother used to take him & dimitri camping??? YES!! honestly i quite like his little setup ngl

dimitri's entire character arc. like- yes!! let him be evil!! honestly i was worried we weren't gonna get to see any sort of actual chameleon presence, but the end had me GAGGED. i was thrilled. fred did incredible

i can really tell where and when they pulled inspiration from in the comics, as someone who did actually read a good chunk of comics w/ kraven in them, i saw a lot of that inspiration in there and i was quite pleased ngl

i was rooting against nikolai the entire fucking movie ngl, i was DELIGHTED to see that man meet his demise

THEY GAVE SERGEI A FUCKING PERSONALITY!!! hot take but i get so bored of every single rendition of kraven having the same damn personality, like give us more than that!! you have so much to play with!! i loved seeing him cocky, but actually charismatic, and lowkey very haunted, especially by his mother, LOVED that detail. (i think sergei being much younger in this rendition, as an origin story, gave a lot more room to explore his personality before he really hardens as a character, and i'm glad they took that avenue)

THE FUCKING SNOW LEOPARD SCENE!!! i fucking lost it, i was laughing, giggling, silently screaming. that was the most cat/dog/pet dad thing EVER i needed more of that, actually.

i also enjoyed watching him be feral. the action scenes were pretty good imo

by the end of the movie, i (personally) 100% understood what atj meant when he said that this "wasn't going to end well" for sergei. he spends most of the movie trying to get back the only family that matters to him, only for his brother to turn on him after it all. THE ANGST. THE DIVIDE. THE CRUMBLE OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP. i loved to see it.

and ofc, my gripes about the movie

i wanted more calypso content, specifically i wanted more kraven x calypso content. you can't just introduce kraven's best love interest and then not use her as an actual love interest. ariana & aaron had SUCH chemistry on screen, i think there was a serious missed opportunity there

the list. they marketed kraven's list as being like, a focal plot point when it really wasn't???? it made up maybe a third of the plot and then forgotten

the movie kind of dragged a little imo bc it was confusing plot-wise. i feel like certain plot points were dragged out, and some plot points were not touched on enough. also a lot of trailer footage we saw just straight up wasn't in the movie?? where'd it go?? i wanted to see adult kraven in tears man what HAPPENED (j.c. chandor if you can hear me, release a director's cut idgaf how long it is just RELEASE IT)

honestly i think they just marketed this movie wrong. if they'd focused more (marketing-wise) on how sergei's relationship with his family ultimately sets him down his path of destruction, the movie would've been received MUCH better than it was

overall, i thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and i think they've left a good open end to explore this character in the future, and i HOPE aaron taylor-johnson will reprise this role in the future, he has such potential in this role and i would love to see more of him in this role, especially as kraven's story unfolds, involving spider-man AND kraven's own family, i want to see that dynamic explored so badly y'all have NO IDEA.

i don’t know how you can delay a movie this long and let it look like this…the animals look so bad and the lighting…

Last night I watched Kraven the Hunter with a friend and it’s so mediocre that it made me mad and I’m venting about it. Spoiler warning I guess, but it was pretty predictable. Also the animals were practically set dressing, which sucks because that’s Kraven’s whole fucking bit.

The entire time I was thinking “if it weren’t for Disney being funded by puritan oligarchs and the U.S. government, this film could’ve been about a guy who’s whole thing is fighting the evils of poaching. But millionaires love poaching, so Marvel can’t upset that audience.”

The film has to make every villain a drug and weapons trafficker on top of being a poacher, so that you don’t focus on the poaching. Don’t look too hard at how much people pay to travel to other countries to kill animals and how much waste it produces!! The film has only one scene where a Ghanaian man says he relies on payments from poaching clients to feed his family. But it doesn’t really show that this man is in need, or that he is forced to subsist on a deeply colonial system. It does nothing to show the detrimental effects of removing a macro predator or endangered species from an ecosystem. It doesn’t show how often poachers will kill people to get animal heads or ivory!!! The poaching industry is already evil enough as it is!!!

The pacing and editing is a hot mess, the timeline is all over the place. The dialogue is extremely tell don’t show. Kraven’s back story is “Rich white boy has an evil dad who tried to get him poach in order to prove his manhood. Boy almost gets killed, Black girl swoops in and uses her sacred family potion to save him. Now he’s mega buff and uses the powers of animals to to kill villains with impunity (except his fucking dad, a mafia kingpin. It’s fine to bum off your family’s ill gotten resources in the name of vigilante justice, I guess.) Also the Black woman is there to be minimally useful. Also his brother is weak and blonde and gets tossed around the plot like a sad puppet until the end.”

The film can’t show Kraven, a man raised from childbirth to be a poacher, actually kill an animal, because that would obviously make him a villain. But they show him fighting animals and letting animals attack other humans because he doesn’t really give a shit about animal welfare. He never really studies the animals, he just stares them in the eyes and miraculously he Gets It and can use their skills to hunt and kill. There’s like five minutes where he’s out in the wilderness and he’s sprinting and climbing trees like a twilight vampire.

There’s only one scene where he confronts some poachers directly. He makes a sad face at a bunch of dead bovine but then goes straight to brutally beating up the poachers. The animals are never a concern again. He doesn’t honor their deaths in any meaningful way. The steppe herds live and graze on his property but it’s not a wildlife conservation, it’s just where his weird secret base is (the base that used to be him mother’s favorite getaway spot from his father. (Which, btw, we never see his mother in her right mind. The film only flashbacks to her in a straight jacket and screaming in an institution. We never see his memories of her loving him and his brother, which is misogynistic as hell in my opinion.))

His evil dad kills a lion early in the film, (a single male lion that is portrayed to be super buff and attacks humans, even though lions ONLY attack humans out of desperation and they fucking hunt in packs) and then at the end, Kraven wears that mane as a mantle. Who the fuck are you dawg??? What the fuck are your ideals??? Are you going to pay reparations for all the animal resources you took from foreign countries??? I think the fuck not!!

(This is a nitpick but I hate that Kraven has an American accent. He has two Russian parents and spent half his life in Russia. Why the fuck does he sound American. Like yes, Russell Crowe’s Russian accent was bad, but at least he was committed to the character!!! Aaron Taylor-Johnson sounded like he was bored half the time and deeply unconvincing the other half. Let your leading characters be and sound Non-American, Disney.)

Marvel tried to improve Kraven’s shitty backstory (and Calypso’s racist backstory) from the comics. But if she’s an investigative lawyer and he has deep ties to the criminal underworld, they could have easily ended the conflict by getting his dad sent to jail and then dispersing the assets.

FRANKLY, the film would’ve been widely more interesting from Calypso’s POV. She’s a Vodou priestess, a lawyer, a huntress, and she has a cool sense of fashion. I’m glad they fully rebooted her story from the comics because everything EVERYTHING about her was extremely racist. But now she doesn’t get to be interesting. There were many options for the entire film to be actually interesting, but it took none of them.
