Egon Schiele The Family 1918
The artwork is one of the last paintings made by Schiele before his death from Spanish flu, which he contacted during World War I. It depicts his dream of a family that never existed - despite the fact that his wife, Edith, was pregnant during the painting of 'The Family', the mother in the painting is modeled after his former lover Wally.
Wally died in separation from Schiele, in Spain, serving as a nurse in the military. Edith Schiele died, like the artist himself, from Spanish flu, just three days before him. Their son was never born.
