Top BL of 2023

2023 is over and I felt like doing my top picks for this year again! Looking back there were a lot of good ones that I enjoyed a lot this year, and so I did not restrict myself to 5. As my sister judging me from across the couch said, "there's no rule do what you want". Fair enough.

This is from the BLs that ended in 2023, though some started in 2022.

8. Kiseki dear to me

I didn't care all that much for the main couple in the end, but Ai Di and Chen Yi? Worthy of obsession. @leofiat-bunny made a cut, for your consideration.

7. Why r u? Korea

I'm an absolute fan of the original against my better judgment and I was looking forward to this one. It doesn't have much to do with the Thai version in the end but I still enjoyed it a lot, both stories.

6. My school president

This was just lovely from start to finish. I really appreciated how they portrayed teenage turmoil and how soft and gentle this was.

5. My Personal Weatherman/Taikan Yoho

Needed a Japanese title on that list and this one was the best of the year by far. Unhinged and horny from start to finish.

4. Wedding plan

This one probably wins the top spot for best surprise of the year. I watched it late after it was completed because I didn't hear much about it but it was lovely. Wrote a fic for them.

3. Be my favourite

Time travel is my weakness and those two were great together.

2. Bed friend

And this one gets the price for most rewatched. So hot, very angst, obsessed with them both. Wrote not one but two pieces for this fandom, one from Uea's POV and one from King's.

1. Moonlight chicken

Left me on the floor. That first ep when they walk around town lives rent free in my head. All the relationships got to me but none more than Jim and Li Ming's. And thus, another fic.

Some people are complaining about remakes while we watched all versions of Hana Yori Dango and I think I would still gladly watch a new one if they gave it to me xD. I don't mind remakes. I would even say that remakes can be really good despite people usually hating on them.

I will watch My Love Mix Up Thai version because I really like the manga and I will really appreciate watching another adaptation of it.

This year I watched Why R U Korean version and I loved it too. I also can't wait to see Cherry Magic, Thai version. I don't mind remakes because we also get so many other stories to watch and sometimes it is kinda comforting to go back to a really well-known and loved story.

Squid Game Season 2 Ep. 5 "One More Game"

Kang No-eul's actions make her enemies. The remaining players are very nervous as they vote on whether to move to the next round.

The Players continue their minigames. Hyun-ju's team does well, and she is like a cheerleader and leader for the group. Each Player has their own reasons for playing, and even though the Spinning Top game seems impossible, they end up winning.

The games continue all the way through to the final teams, which happens to be Gi-hun's and a bunch of random Players. In the end, the group meets back at the dorms, where they talk about how Hyun-ju is still pre-op and needs money to help pay for it. At the same time, Thanos plans to keep his close-knit team in check and figure out how to gain the upper hand over the others.

At the same time, No-eul is grabbed by two soldiers and thrown into her room by these criminals. No-eul tries to fight them off, but they threaten her with a knife, calling her a communist, and force her to submit.

With 110 players out of the way, many of them survived. The remaining players were divided into two groups: those who were happy and those who were upset that more players hadn't died to increase the prize money. The teams are given the vote to stay or go, starting with Player 001 and working up.

Min-ho, Jung-bae, Yong-sik, and Hyung-ju are among those who choose to stay. Min-ho is forced into it by his teammates, Jung-bae explains he has big debits, Yong-sik has extra debts due to loan sharks, and Hyun-ju has extra debts, too. Jeong-dae unfortunately manages to get the people to chant "one more game", and it becomes pretty clear from there on out that another game will take place.

After the result, many players feel distrust and disappointment, and they divide into different groups. In the middle of this, Myung-gi is scolded for choosing to quit by Thanos and the thugs. However, Gi-hun knows what's coming next and prepares for the nighttime strikes. When it's dark, he tells his teammates they need to take turns watching. Yong-sik's mom actually has a hidden blade in her hair that could come in handy later.

In the morning, the third game is about to begin. At the same time, Jun-ho starts his latest mission to go out and try to find Gi-hun. No-eul, with a nasty cut across her cheek, is getting ready to head out with the other soldiers for the next game.

The third game is called Mingle. The rules of this game include the middle plattform rotating, and when they hear a number, they have to form groups of that size and go into rooms. The door will close within 30 seconds, so there isn't much of a strategy. Gi-hun, In-ho, and the other leaders all tell their teams to stay strong and not panic as the game begins.
