10 Disney songs that didn't go to the Oscars, but should have
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Note: I have NO IDEA what songs were submitted for consideration, but I'm just saying these songs at least deserved nominations.
"Know Who You Are"--My favorite final song in a Disney movie and one of my favorite songs in general, it's a beautiful song that's lyrics about self-identity and confidence bring the film full-circle.
"Surface Pressure"--It's not often you get a song in a "kid's film" about anxiety and people relying too much on you, and feeling like you haven't amounted to anything if you fail (well, maybe songs like that exist, but it's usually done with malicious intent to the singer).
"Out There"--I know it kinda ruffled some feathers on the perceived subtext of the song, but I think it's relatable for a lot of people, especially if there's something about you that society deems abnormal, weird, or problematic.
"At All Costs"--Granted, the song could've been A LOT better in terms of context and storytelling, so perhaps I'm blinded by it feeling so much better than the subpar soundtrack (not that I blame you, Julia; not having much to go off of would be hard for anyone). I just love the lullaby sound to it and the meaningful message.
"If I Never Knew You"--A bittersweet love song and my favorite Disney love song about (possibly) losing the person you love most, but not regretting a moment of your time together. And yes, I know it was a deleted song, but given that the animation was almost done and cut at the last minute, I'm gonna count it.
"The Next Right Thing"--"Frozen 2" kinda had a situation where they couldn't openly market a lot of their music simply because of spoilers, but TNRT is the best song in the film just because of how dark it is, and how uplifting it gets in the end. The hopelessness feels new to me since it's a song about losing someone (a common trope in Disney films, but not a common song).
"Part of Your World"--The fact that Sebastian's songs were nominated but Ariel's wasn't is despicable (no shade to the crab, but Ariel's song was worthy of a nomination more than his).
"Reflection"--"Mulan" deserves more songs, and the fact that Disney didn't submit "Reflection" to the Oscars (I'm assuming) does further my suspicions that Disney kinda undermines the fact that it's a musical.
"Once Upon a Dream"--It's a timeless love song. Perhaps it didn't resonate with people in 1959/1960 like it does now.
"A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes"--This song needs no defense; it's AMAZING AND UPLIFTING.

I love when people say “I dont usually draw” and then whip out a banger piece. You can def tell they don’t draw… but it’s still beautiful. 🧡

Moana (2016) v Wall-E (2008)
Tumblr media
Moana: "You're Welcome" for including this Lin Manuel Miranda masterpiece. The most powerful moments of Moana's arc are exponentially improved by the music accompanying it; "I am Moana" and "Know Who You Are" in particular.
Wall-E: "Wall-E has one of the best scores of any animated film" (submitter). And we really like how the music is the main mode of communicating to the audience for most of the movie. Plus, Hello Dolly's "It Only Takes A Moment" is such a human moment for two robots!

one time I used the ben affleck smoking reaction image in the family group chat and my mom replied with the funniest possible response which was: "mommy doesn't know who the guy is???" and that phrase has not left my brain since. I'll see blorbos on my dash that I don't recognize and I'll be like well it seems mommy doesn't know who the guy is.

why do certain things matter to you? why do you continue to make efforts even when it's tough to keep going sometimes? why do you want to do, what you want to do?
you why is what drives you. keep it close. remind yourself of it every now and then. it's a core part of you ✨

Hot take: I wish Moana's storyline mirrored Te Fiti's
Tumblr media
During "Know Who You Are" (one of the BEST final songs in a Disney movie; fight me), it feels like it's supposed to be a full-circle song about identity, though I wish Moana and Te Fiti had more in common. Te Fiti's loss of self is more in reference to Moana's culture (giving up wayfinding due to the dangers) rather than Moana herself; she always wanted to explore, and the issue was moreso confidence, particularly after losing Round 1 to Te Ka. I kinda wish there was a point in Moana's story where she felt like she lost herself and she almost gave into rage and anger similar to Te Fiti, and I feel like they could've done that with Maui, making him less villainous at first and only becoming selfish and self-centered after his hook was damaged. Just my two cents.
