I guess I should formally make a post here about this, even though it’s been out for a while now:

HISTORY: This project is something that I’ve been actively working on for the past 2 years and I am very proud to be able to finally present the fruits of my labor! Growing up, I’d always been a massive fan of the Donkey Kong Country titles. I remember finding “Legend of the Crystal Coconut” on VHS at my local video rental store and pleading with my parents to rent it for me. I was blown away, finally being able to put voices to kharacters- and while the overall quality of the animation and writing was rather dubious in hindsight, most of the vocal performances always stood out to me as being THE definitive voice cast. For an awkwardly-animated cartoon of the mid-90’s, the writing was fine for what it was and touched on the normal ‘Saturday Morning’ kids block tropes. However, I’d always felt that there was something more that could be brought to the table in terms of storytelling if things were more kongsistent with the games. Here’s where I come in. Fast-forward 25 some odd years and I’m now living out my childhood dream, as ko-producer, kreative kongsultant, kasting director and voice actor of my own little motley krew of Kremlings!

Name: Spiny

Debut: Super Mario Bros.

Now I know what you’re thinking. “Weird Mario Enemies, have you gone out of your mind again? This isn’t a Weird Mario Enemy!” And I think... you’re right!

Don’t get me wrong, I love Spiny for how effective it is. You want to show an enemy you can’t jump on? Slap some spikes on its back! No one will jump on that! But I think we’ve gone over all of that before. All of that. So let’s stop talking about Spiny, and start talking about...

Name: Spiny

Debut: Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest

THIS Spiny! Yes, Mario’s not the only one who has to face off against enemies with that exact name, because Diddy and Dixie Kong have to as well! Not Donkey Kong, though, because Rare’s whole strategy was to ditch the lead of the previous game in each subsequent game. Imagine if Retro Studios kept that up! Would we finally have a game where you play as Wrinkly Kong?

Anyway, Spinies (Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest) are just about the same deal as Spinies. (Super Mario Bros.) You can’t jump on a Spiny, because its quills are well... spiny! However, since Diddy Kong does not have Fire Flower Fire Power, he can’t exactly “incinerate” them either. What he can do is roll, however, and since Spinies are NOT covered by spines from the front, Diddy (and Dixie) can just roll into one of these guys and call it a day!

Of course, sometimes, Spinies won’t work alone, sometimes they’ll have a Klampon guarding them, an enemy which CAN be jumped on but NOT be rolled into! You have to mix and match your strategies! Figure it all out! Switch it all up to take out both of them!

Name: Spiny

Debut: Mario Kart 64

If you haven’t had your filling of porcupines named Spiny today, then you’re just about to! While sometimes these guys are just called “Porcupines,” that’s the less interesting name because it’s that much less confusing! What’s the point of life if you don’t have three separate enemies all named Spiny! Here, the spikes are more symbolic than anything, as in Mario Kart, there’s no jumping on enemies. But they do still make it look dangerous! If you touch a Spiny, then you’ll spin out!

Spinys (yes, that’s the proper plural of THIS Spiny, but not the other two) are only seen on the Yoshi Valley course, where they’ll swarm some of its many paths and block your way! As Yoshi Valley is already the most confusing course in the game, running into these guys can really mess you up, and you might not even know it, since you never even know what place you’re in!

Unfortunately, though, when Yoshi Valley returned in Mario Kart 8, the Spinys did not come with it. In this game, they were replaced with Goombas, which makes sense, since they had a model already prepared, and are more “Mario-themed,” but what justified this in-universe? Are Goombas the natural predators of Spinys? Do Goombas eat porcupines? Is the Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest Spiny safe from the wrath of the Goomba? We may never know...
