Rehabilitation: Moving Out and Starting Over (6/?)
Side effects may include a loss of self-identity and individuality, frequent nightmares, questioning your own existence, severe mental trauma, constant panic attacks, spontaneous crying at random moments, and a strong desire to stay with loved ones at all cost. Co-written with @violetganache42. Takes place between Chapters 6 and 7 of Arc-V Aftermath.
While the Sakakis (and Yuto) were attending the Faire, Yugo was getting dressed for the day. He was already wearing his Turbo Duel suit and he has finished finger-combing a small amount of gel into his hair. After sweeping his bangs into the usual banana-shaped style, he smiled confidently.
"Alright," Yugo said, looking at his reflection. "My outfit's nice and clean and my hair looks as cool as ever." He winked. "Now to begin my new life with my own body."
It felt like forever since the last time he was at the orphanage, and after the Original Dimension's return, it still looked the same. Of course, the only difference was that his room is now inhabited by a slightly-changed Yugo. His personality remained the same, but his appearance had a single alteration: his eye color had changed from aquamarine to yellow to match Clear Wing Synchro Dragon's eyes. He really liked the different hue his eyes received. He still couldn't believe how clean he looked, which he didn't mind at all; for someone growing up in a low class section of New Domino City, looking cleaner than normal was quite surprising. It's been like this ever since his sleepover with Rin two days ago. Speaking of which, he decided to check in on her to see if she was also done getting ready for the day.
After a few minutes later, Yugo arrived at Rin's room and knocked on the door. "Hey RinRin!" he cheerfully announced. "Ready to pick up where we left off?"
However, a loud sob was heard from behind the door. "...Rin?" Yugo asked. "You alright?"
"Go away!" Rin sobbed. "I don't care who you are, just leave me alone!"
Alarmed, Yugo opened the door. "Rin!" he exclaimed, panicked. "What's wrong?!"
Seeing before his very eyes was Rin lying on her bed, her face hiding on top of her pillow as she cried. He has never seen her so upset before; they now got their bodies back, so what exactly happened to make her depressed?
"Look, if this is about what happened with Ray, I'm sorry," Yugo said, entering Rin's room and sitting next to her. "It's probably gonna take a while for you to recover, but-"
"You don't understand!" Rin sobbed, sitting up to look at Yugo. "I didn't lose just my body! I nearly lost all my memories!"
Yugo was taken back by that outburst. "Your memories?" he asked.
"After losing consciousness in that machine, I thought I might think about all the time we spent together, our happiest memories," Rin explained. "But then...there was this flash of neon green light and..." She choked out a sob. "Everything was gone in an instant. I couldn't remember my name, my identity, or even you. That machine must've erased every single one of my memories and there was nothing I could do to recover them.
"But when Zuzu was revived, everything came back. All of those forgotten memories were instantly recovered. And yet..." Rin choked out another sob. "I'm not sure why I'm like this. Do I duel because I want to, or is it because Ray was a Duelist herself?" She closed her eyes, tears dripping from her eyelashes. "Yugo...what am I?"
She just wasn't sure anymore; learning there are three other girls who share the same face as her was crazy enough, but discovering they were all part of Leo's daughter was actually scary. They nearly got amnesia when they were forcibly fused back into Ray in order to power up ARC-V; if it weren't for Zuzu's revival, they wouldn't have a single clue about their origins in their respective dimensions or their individual identities. Even so, it only delayed the mind merge, which was intensely horrifying because she and her counterparts were nearly wiped away from existence as their minds were merging back into Ray at an alarming rate. They were all lucky everything worked out in the end, but Rin couldn't stop thinking about her identity crisis. All her life, she was but a young teenage girl who grew up as a Commoner and had a tough personality yet saw beauty in everything, but everything changed when Yuri kidnapped her from out of the blue, not long after the Invasion of Heartland City.
Yugo stood up. "Well I'll tell ya what you are," he said. He opened the closet in her room, revealing her numerous outfits. "You're New Domino's resident fashion plate. Sure you couldn't afford the more expensive outfits, but if it was cute and comfortable-looking, you'd buy it." He let out a chuckle. "I know how much you love to shop, but it was kinda why we had to build a Duel Runner from scratch."
What he means by that is they needed to save up enough money to find parts to build their Duel Runner. They didn't had a whole lot of wealth to begin with, but Rin had to put off shopping at the donation center for a little while so that she could help out with searching and purchasing the necessary parts. Prior to Duel Academy's interference with the Doktor's Fusion Parasite, that Duel Runner was the biggest project they did together and he had treasured it ever since it was completed because it was a token of their friendship.
"But that's not all," Yugo continued. He picked up Rin's deck and took out her two Crystal Bells. "You've still got these two cards in your deck."
Rin opened her eyes. "My Crystal Bells?"
"I'm aware that you and the other girls ripped up the Fusion Parasites in your decks," Yugo explained as he sat next to her again. "But while they also ripped up the Fusion cards they got because of those nasty bugs, you didn't. You held on to them."
"Only because they fit so well with my Windwitches," Rin said, smiling slightly.
"Exactly," Yugo said. "That's what makes you different from the other Ray girls. If you see a card that fits with your burn style, you'd tend to keep it, even if it was originally created for evil purposes." He put the cards back in her deck and placed it on her nightstand. "But I'm not done. I can think of a couple more things that make you unique."
"Like what?" Rin asked.
Yugo picked up a hairbrush on Rin's nightstand and started brushing her hair. "You're cute," he said. "Practically the cutest girl I know. You've got big eyes, a sweet voice, and super adorable curls. Not to mention the prettiest giggle I ever heard."
Rin let out a small laugh after hearing that. "Yeah, just like that!" Yugo cheerfully said. "It's those features that make you different compared to your counterparts with longer hair." He finished brushing Rin's hair and placed the hairbrush back on her nightstand. "But most importantly: you're the one I fell in love with."
Rin was taken back by the sudden confession. "You love me?" she asked.
"'Course I do," Yugo answered. "All of those unique traits are what made me fall in love with you. I didn't realize it until I started traveling to different dimension lookin' for you." He held her hands and looked at her straight in the eye. "So as part of our new lives, how would you like to be my girlfriend?"
Rin never knew he felt this way about her ever since he went looking for her. She always felt like the two were childhood friends, but it looks like there might be more to their relationship. Sure Yugo may be loud, rude, and quick-tempered with a bit of perverted tendencies, but he’s loyal, energetic, goofy or cute at times, and an overall kind person at heart. Smiling softly, she planted a kiss on his forehead, feeling his blonde bangs on her lips. His eyes widened in joy from the brief contact.
"Of course, you moron," Rin said. "I'll be your girlfriend."
"Great!" Yugo said, sounding happier than usual. "Now how 'bout you get dressed and meet me in my room? I've got a huge surprise I wanna show you."
As he left her room to go back to his, Rin went to her closet to pick out new attire; she wore her usual one for a while and wanted to try out another one for a change. She settled on a short-sleeved, knee-length, light blue dress with pink linings on the sleeves, shoulders, and from the center of her chest to the collar line where the gold buttons were, pink pockets located where each breast was, and a pink string bow with two gold beads around the waist. She also sported a pair of black low-heeled sandals and a pink flower hair clip that she has ever since she was a child.
Upon arriving at Yugo's room, Rin was surprised to see a lot of numerous boxes in his room. "Uh... Yugo?" the Windwitch user asked. "What's with all the boxes?"
"I'll tell ya why," Yugo explained. He held up a booklet. "There's this old clock shop in New Domino called Poppo Time and right next to it is an unoccupied apartment-slash-garage." He pointed at a building next to the clock shop. "That, RinRin, is gonna be our new home."
"New home?" Rin asked. "Does that mean...?"
"Exactly," Yugo said. "We're finally movin' out and gettin' our own home!"
Rin never expected that day to come; heck, she never thought about it at all. She enjoyed living in the orphanage all her life, but the fact they can now move to a new home in the Commons was surprising news. They can finally have their own individual spaces in Poppo Time's apartment and use the garage for Duel Runner constructions, tests, and repairs.
However, Rin looked at the booklet. Her eyes widened when she saw the price. "20,000 yen?!" she read. "Yugo, we're broke! We don't have that much money!"
"I know," Yugo said. "But I made some new friends while I searched for you. There were some people like Aster Phoenix and Kite Tenjo, but the guy we're gonna see should help us provide the money we need to live at the place."
Rin was a little curious as to what he's referring to, but before she knew it, she was running out the door with Yugo, who was heading to the nearest bus stop from the orphanage. "Where are we going?" she asked.
"The Leo Institute," Yugo answered. "There's a guy there named Sylvio Sawatari. I met him during the Friendship Cup. He's a great guy. Super hilarious too. He's a Dueltainer like Yuya. I was hoping he could provide us with the money we need for our new home."
"You sure?" Rin asked.
"'Course I'm sure," Yugo insisted. "Yuya told me Sylvio comes from a wealthy family, so I was hoping he could give us enough yen to cover the payment."
One bus trip later, the two arrived in the Paradise section of the mashed-up city. This was Rin's official first time being in what was originally known as Paradise City; she does have a good idea on where certain places are located in this town, but that was because her soul was in Zuzu's body prior to the blood separation. Yugo only went there a couple times to try and find his girlfriend, only for him to run into and duel Yuto and stumble across Zuzu the next day before being whisked back into the Synchro Dimension. Fused or not, they both knew where LID was thanks to the preparations made for the night of the Heartland Duel School students' dance do-over.
Upon entering the Leo Institute, Yugo didn't hesitate to call out to his friend. "Hey Sylvio! I need to speak to you!"
Rin noticed how large the institute was. "I don't think it'll be that easy to find him-"
"Yugo? Is that you?"
The Synchro couple turned around to see Sylvio appearing from around the corner as he walked down the hallway. His eyes caught onto Yugo's and couldn't believe that his friend was standing right before him. The short amount of processing left him overjoyed as he ran over to him to give him a huge hug.
"Whoa there," Yugo said. "I know we're buds, but you didn't have to hug me."
"Oh Yugo!" Sylvio exclaimed, still hugging the Speedroid user. "You're alright!"
"Uh... Yeah, I'm alright," Yugo said, pushing his excited friend back. "But what's with the behavior? I haven't seen you this happy before."
"You don't remember?" Sylvio asked. "I dueled Zarc on your behalf! Granted I wanted to save Yuya too, but saving you was more important! You're the only Duelist I met who is worthy to be my equal, and I was willing to do anything to save you."
"You... You actually fought for me?" Yugo asked, tears forming in his eyes. He never thought that anyone wanted to save him from Zarc's clutches. His soul was absorbed into Yuri's body as he completely fell into the ever-growing darkness, as seen when he and Yuto pressured Yuya to reunite as one again; despite some signs of resistance from the latters, Yuri's defeat signaled the start of their incarnation's return. Seeing someone pursuing their mission to try and rescue the Synchro user from the strings of manipulative, corrupt darkness that he bore like a puppet was a touching moment for him to learn.
"Of course I fought for you," Sylvio answered. "Especially since we are long due for a rematch."
"A rematch?" Rin asked.
"We faced off against each other," Yugo explained. "And we ended up bonding during the duel."
"But enough about strolling down memory lane," Sylvio said. "What brings you and your girlfriend here?"
"It's because of this," Yugo answered, showing Sylvio the booklet. "I wanna move in there with Rin as a way of celebrating our new lives with our bodies back."
Sylvio looked at the place in the booklet. "Only 20,000 yen?" he asked. "I'll be more than happy to provide the money, but why that location? It looks old."
"I dunno," Yugo admitted. "But when I saw this place..." He pointed at the apartment/garage next to Poppo Time. "...I got this weird feeling in me, almost like I had to live there."
Yugo couldn't describe it in words, but he felt like there was a nagging voice in his head telling him to move to Poppo Time for a very good reason. These strange memories started to flow through his mind about this place, but there were far different experiences occurring. He remembered seeing Jack and Crow living with him…or more specifically, an alternate version of him. But was it really him? He looked much older with tanned skin and different hair. And what was with the criminal mark on his face?
"So that's why I'm totally revved up to move there," Yugo continued. "And I can't move in alone. I've gotta bring RinRin with me." He put his hand on her waist and pulled her close to him. "She's my girl."
"Well if you insist..." Sylvio said. He took out his wallet and gave Yugo 20,000 yen. "This should be enough to give the landlord.”
"Aw, thanks Sylvio!" Yugo cheerfully said. "You're the best!"
Some time later, Yugo and Rin returned to the Commons to talk to the owner of the shop. For two people who have spent their lives growing up in the lower class section of New Domino City, they have never been to Poppo Time. Fortunately, the booklet did provide information about the place; it was located in front of a dirt road which harbored other small shops and businesses and it is owned by a woman named Zora, a widow whose son Lyndon also works there.
Upon arriving at the clock shop, Yugo and Rin spoke to Zora about living arrangements. "I see," the widow said when the Synchro counterparts finished explaining. "So you wish to move out of the local orphanage and live next door."
"That's exactly what our plan is," Yugo said. He brought out the yen Sylvio gave him. "I even have the exact money needed for payment."
Zora accepted the yen and checked it. "This is exactly 20,000 yen," she remarked. "And I do like that confident look in your eyes. Of course you and your girlfriend can live here."
"Thank you so much," Rin said, bowing out of respect.
"But I do expect you two to work at the shop from time to time," Zora continued. "If you're going to live here, you're going to need money. I can't have two poor orphans living next door, so how do you feel about starting at 300 yen per hour?"
"Sure," Yugo agreed. "At least it's somethin'."
Of course, they would need to find a nice balance between work, living at home, and working in the garage, but if they work a decent number of hours each week, they'll be making a sufficient amount of money.
And so, with the payment completed, Yugo asked Aster Phoenix and Kite Tenjo to help him and Rin move their stuff to their new home. They all used their monsters to carry all the boxes out of their rooms and into the new ones they're moving into. Clear Wing Synchro Dragon, Windwitch - Winter Bell, and Galaxy Eyes Cipher Dragon all flew at a steady pace with neatly piled of boxes on each of the wings and tails whereas Destiny HERO - Dystopia glided past them while carrying a stack in his hands with ease, shocking them in the process.
While that was going on, Yugo smiled wide at his and Rin's new home. "I can't believe it, RinRin," he said. "It's a brand new chapter of our lives."
"I know," Rin agreed. "Sure the chances of another Friendship Cup happening are slim, but at least we'll make progress together."
"Not to mention all the new memories we'll make," Yugo said. "Just you, me, Bruno-" His eyes widened in shock.
"Bruno?" Rin asked. "Who's Bruno?"
Yugo had no idea what he was talking about, but at the same time, he did. He has never heard of or even know about this Bruno person, yet he still had this strange feeling within him that he has met him before. Maybe in another life? That must be the case because these memories he was suddenly remembering weren't his to begin with. In fact, he started recalling on a life-changing duel somewhere in space. From what he was witnessing, Bruno was an android replica of a younger Antinomy, a former pro Turbo Duelist known as Johnny who was one of the four remaining humans in an apocalyptic world who wanted creating a better future for humanity.
Yugo saw through the eyes of what may be his alternate self in a Death Course, a Turbo Duel circuit where the loser is killed; in this case, the Turbo Duelist who loses will be sucked into a black hole that was made as a result of Antinomy's Delta Accel Synchro Summon. He managed to win the duel, but the black hole was creeping closer. Antinomy's Duel Runner—Delta Eagle—was barely maintaining control and has a cut on his face from one of its pieces. He bowed his head with his eyes closed as he spoke.
"I ended up meeting you under such circumstances… Because of that, I never got to know you as a true friend," he said.
"Antinomy! No, Bruno!" Yugo's alternate self exclaimed in an odd voice, causing the latter to look up in surprise. "You're one of us: Team 5D's." He extended his arm out with his hand making a fist. "And you're my friend, Bruno!"
Bruno was left speechless by those words as he looked at the fist. "Friend…? Do you really think of me as your friend, Yusei?"
Yusei? That's what his name was in his other life? Yugo's curiosity grew into realization because it would explain why he was suddenly having these memories on moving day. At the same time, Yusei nodded in response to the question he was asked.
"Your friend, huh…?" Bruno stated before closing his eyes and recalling on all the times he spent with Team 5D's, ranging from hanging out to the Turbo Duels at the World Racing Grand Prix. "I loved being around you all and watching you fight with everyone." He opened his eyes again. "During that time, I felt your infinite strength and potential!"
"Bruno…" Yusei said. Just then, Delta Eagle suffered another partial explosion and started to slow down. Reaching his hand out, he yelled, "Bruno! Jump over to me! Hurry!"
With a simple stare, Bruno answered, "That would be useless." This shocked Yusei and Yugo; was he doing what they think he was doing? "I told you before. The only way to reach the end of this course is for one of us to be destroyed."
"Bruno!" Yusei called out as Delta Eagle continued slowing down.
A smile appeared on Bruno's face. "The short time I spent with you guys was really fun."
Yusei had a worried look on his face because he feared of what his friend might do. "Bruno!"
Within a matter of a few seconds, Bruno sped the smoking Delta Eagle up towards Yusei's Duel Runner. "What are you about to do, Bruno?!"
"Yusei! You're my hope! Grab the light beyond Accel Synchro! Grab that light and open the future!!" With widened eyes, Yusei heard these last two words from his close friend, who threw off his helmet: "GO!! YUSEI!!"
With that, Delta Eagle accelerated and both Duel Runners collided, sending them off rapidly in a beam of white light. Electricity sparked all over Delta Eagle as it malfunctioned and severely worsened its damage, followed by stronger explosions from the front. It dramatically slowed down as Yusei's Duel Runner ricocheted away.
"Bruno! Bruno!!" Yusei shouted.
Bruno smiled again. Yusei… he thought to himself before being gulfed in smoke and falling back.
"BRUNO!!"
Back at the Divine Temple, a circle of white light opened up as Yusei dashed out of it and fell out of his fumbling Duel Runner, rolling a couple times on the floor. An illuminated gear faded as the floor grew dark; one of the Planetary Gears was deactivated. Yusei got up to see where the light was before spotting a broken visor on the floor, stunning him and Yugo in disbelief. An image of Bruno in his standard attire faded in through the lens; he had sacrificed himself in order for his companion to save the world and the future. Yusei clenched his right fist as his eyebrows quivered, with tears welling up in his shut eyes and streaming down his face a little before opening them halfway.
"Bruno… BRUNO!!"
"Are you alright?" Aster asked.
Yugo opened his eyes, surprised and confused. He was back in the real world, but his friends and girlfriend were looking at him in concern. But what was that vision? How could he have been this Yusei person and Zarc? Regardless, he shrugged it off, thinking it was nothing more than a silly vision.
"Yeah, I'm fine," Yugo lied.
"You were screaming about someone named Bruno," Kite pointed out. "That doesn't sound fine."
So…it wasn't a silly vision? Yugo was actually remembering this Yusei person's memories? Out of all the moments for this to be happening, why did it have to be moving day?
Rin looked at the apartment/garage. "This is a big place," she commented. "What if we asked Crow and Shinji to move in with us? We could use the extra company."
"No way!" Yugo blurted out. "We can't ask Sylvio for 40,000 extra yen! I know he's a nice guy, but I hate takin' advantage of him."
"No need," Aster said, taking out his Duel Academy student points card. "My time as an Obelisk Force commander earned me a lot of student points. I'll convert them into cash for your friends."
"Aw, thanks Aster!" Yugo said. "Now we just have to ask Crow and Shinji if they want to move in."
All Duel Academy students were required to have special cards which were similar to debit cards, except instead of depositing money into them, they receive points and are immediately transferred into their cards. By converting them into cash, they were permitted to treat them similarly to debit cards; for Aster, it was one of the many perks of being a high-ranked Obelisk Force commander because he has plenty of points that can be converted to over 40,000 yen, meaning it was more than enough to cover the cost of Crow and Shinji living with Yugo and Rin.
Once the group and their ace monsters were finished bringing the boxes over to the apartment, Yugo and Rin needed to figure out where Crow and Shinji lived. If they remembered correctly, they have been staying at their hideout alongside Frank, Tanner, and Amanda, but where was that even located? How will the children react to learning about this news?
"Oh crud!" Yugo realized. "I forgot Crow has a bunch of kids to look after!"
This was a setback he didn't even thought about. There were times where he occasionally headed down the street where Crow lived and saw him taking care of the three children; he always had a huge soft spot for children and always loved and cared about them. How were Yugo and Rin going to get roommates now since Crow was basically a foster-father to Frank, Tanner, and Amanda?
"Yeah, you're right," Rin said. "But while you were in that weird trance, I think I heard you mentioning Crow. I thought having him as a roommate would help calm you down."
"Don't worry about it," Aster said. "Just leave everything to me."
Yugo and Rin turned to stare at Aster; how does he know what he's doing? Didn't Duel Academy students and Obelisk Force soldiers have information about only the XYZ residence? The only one who had a strong idea about the Synchro residence was Jean-Michel Roget and he was currently missing after the disbandment of the High Council…not that the duo knew about it for obvious reasons. Still, how was Aster going to help them?
"What are you thinkin' about?" Yugo asked.
"Well with you two moving out of the orphanage, that means new rooms are available," Aster pointed out. "Wouldn't it make sense for three homeless orphans to occupy those rooms?"
That was actually a pretty good idea. They grew up without a home prior to Crow taking care of them, so maybe moving to the orphanage can have them make more friends and still have the basic survival necessities: a roof over their heads, beds to sleep on, food and beverages to eat and drink, clothes to wear, and so on. They were clearly going to miss Crow, but they'll surely come up with a plan for them to still keep in touch.
"So this is gonna be our new path," Yugo said. "Livin' with a couple of roommates in our new home."
"Of course," Rin agreed. She held Yugo's hand, intertwining their fingers together. "And the best part is that we'll do this together."
Yugo nodded in agreement to what Rin just stated. They were happy to know that they can finally move into a place of their own, and with Crow and Shinji moving in, they'll have two new friends to get to know more about as they bond through duels and mechanics. Maybe it was for the best that they ultimately settled with this decision; Frank, Tanner, and Amanda may be children right now, but they were still growing up, so if they agree to live in the orphanage, the Synchro counterparts will be able to create new memories and preserve the past ones.

The Strange Tale of Doctor Dog
Far up in the mountains of the Province of Hunan in the central part of China, there once lived in a small village a rich gentleman who had only one child. This girl, like the daughter of Kwan-yu in the story of the Great Bell, was the very joy of her father's life.
Now Mr. Min, for that was this gentleman's name, was famous throughout the whole district for his learning, and, as he was also the owner of much property, he spared no effort to teach Honeysuckle the wisdom of the sages, and to give her everything she craved. Of course this was enough to spoil most children, but Honeysuckle was not at all like other children. As sweet as the flower from which she took her name, she listened to her father's slightest command, and obeyed without ever waiting to be told a second time.
Her father often bought kites for her, of every kind and shape. There were fish, birds, butterflies, lizards and huge dragons, one of which had a tail more than thirty feet long. Mr. Min was very skilful in flying these kites for little Honeysuckle, and so naturally did his birds and butterflies circle round and hover about in the air that almost any little western boy would have been deceived and said, "Why, there is a real bird, and not a kite at all!" Then again, he would fasten a queer little instrument to the string, which made a kind of humming noise, as he waved his hand from side to side. "It is the wind singing, Daddy," cried Honeysuckle, clapping her hands with joy; "singing a kite-song to both of us." Sometimes, to teach his little darling a lesson if she had been the least naughty, Mr. Min would fasten queerly twisted scraps of paper, on which were written many Chinese words, to the string of her favourite kite.
"What are you doing, Daddy?" Honeysuckle would ask. "What can those queer-looking papers be?"
"On every piece is written a sin that we have done."
"What is a sin, Daddy?"
"Oh, when Honeysuckle has been naughty; that is a sin!" he answered gently. "Your old nurse is afraid to scold you, and if you are to grow up to be a good woman, Daddy must teach you what is right."
Then Mr. Min would send the kite up high—high over the house-tops, even higher than the tall Pagoda on the hillside. When all his cord was let out, he would pick up two sharp stones, and, handing them to Honeysuckle, would say, "Now, daughter, cut the string, and the wind will carry away the sins that are written down on the scraps of paper."
"But, Daddy, the kite is so pretty. Mayn't we keep our sins a little longer?" she would innocently ask.
"No, child; it is dangerous to hold on to one's sins. Virtue is the foundation of happiness," he would reply sternly, choking back his laughter at her question. "Make haste and cut the cord."
So Honeysuckle, always obedient—at least with her father—would saw the string in two between the sharp stones, and with a childish cry of despair would watch her favourite kite, blown by the wind, sail farther and farther away, until at last, straining her eyes, she could see it sink slowly to the earth in some far-distant meadow.
"Now laugh and be happy," Mr. Min would say, "for your sins are all gone. See that you don't get a new supply of them."
Honeysuckle was also fond of seeing the Punch and Judy show, for, you must know, this old-fashioned amusement for children was enjoyed by little folks in China, perhaps three thousand years before your great-grandfather was born. It is even said that the great Emperor, Mu, when he saw these little dancing images for the first time, was greatly enraged at seeing one of them making eyes at his favourite wife. He ordered the showman to be put to death, and it was with difficulty the poor fellow persuaded his Majesty that the dancing puppets were not really alive at all, but only images of cloth and clay.
No wonder then Honeysuckle liked to see Punch and Judy if the Son of Heaven himself had been deceived by their queer antics into thinking them real people of flesh and blood.
But we must hurry on with our story, or some of our readers will be asking, "But where is Dr. Dog? Are you never coming to the hero of this tale?" One day when Honeysuckle was sitting inside a shady pavilion that overlooked a tiny fish-pond, she was suddenly seized with a violent attack of colic. Frantic with pain, she told a servant to summon her father, and then without further ado, she fell over in a faint upon the ground.
When Mr. Min reached his daughter's side, she was still unconscious. After sending for the family physician to come post haste, he got his daughter to bed, but although she recovered from her fainting fit, the extreme pain continued until the poor girl was almost dead from exhaustion.
Now, when the learned doctor arrived and peered at her from under his gigantic spectacles, he could not discover the cause of her trouble. However, like some of our western medical men, he did not confess his ignorance, but proceeded to prescribe a huge dose of boiling water, to be followed a little later by a compound of pulverized deer's horn and dried toadskin.
Poor Honeysuckle lay in agony for three days, all the time growing weaker and weaker from loss of sleep. Every great doctor in the district had been summoned for consultation; two had come from Changsha, the chief city of the province, but all to no avail. It was one of those cases that seem to be beyond the power of even the most learned physicians. In the hope of receiving the great reward offered by the desperate father, these wise men searched from cover to cover in the great Chinese Cyclopedia of Medicine, trying in vain to find a method of treating the unhappy maiden. There was even thought of calling in a certain foreign physician from England, who was in a distant city, and was supposed, on account of some marvellous cures he had brought to pass, to be in direct league with the devil. However, the city magistrate would not allow Mr. Min to call in this outsider, for fear trouble might be stirred up among the people.
Mr. Min sent out a proclamation in every direction, describing his daughter's illness, and offering to bestow on her a handsome dowry and give her in marriage to whoever should be the means of bringing her back to health and happiness. He then sat at her bedside and waited, feeling that he had done all that was in his power. There were many answers to his invitation. Physicians, old and young, came from every part of the Empire to try their skill, and when they had seen poor Honeysuckle and also the huge pile of silver shoes her father offered as a wedding gift, they all fought with might and main for her life; some having been attracted by her great beauty and excellent reputation, others by the tremendous reward.
But, alas for poor Honeysuckle! Not one of all those wise men could cure her! One day, when she was feeling a slight change for the better, she called her father, and, clasping his hand with her tiny one said, "Were it not for your love I would give up this hard fight and pass over into the dark wood; or, as my old grandmother says, fly up into the Western Heavens. For your sake, because I am your only child, and especially because you have no son, I have struggled hard to live, but now I feel that the next attack of that dreadful pain will carry me away. And oh, I do not want to die!"
Here Honeysuckle wept as if her heart would break, and her old father wept too, for the more she suffered the more he loved her.
Just then her face began to turn pale. "It is coming! The pain is coming, father! Very soon I shall be no more. Good-bye, father! Good-bye; good——." Here her voice broke and a great sob almost broke her father's heart. He turned away from her bedside; he could not bear to see her suffer. He walked outside and sat down on a rustic bench; his head fell upon his bosom, and the great salt tears trickled down his long grey beard.
As Mr. Min sat thus overcome with grief, he was startled at hearing a low whine. Looking up he saw, to his astonishment, a shaggy mountain dog about the size of a Newfoundland. The huge beast looked into the old man's eyes with so intelligent and human an expression, with such a sad and wistful gaze, that the greybeard addressed him, saying, "Why have you come? To cure my daughter?"
The dog replied with three short barks, wagging his tail vigorously and turning toward the half-opened door that led into the room where the girl lay.
By this time, willing to try any chance whatever of reviving his daughter, Mr. Min bade the animal follow him into Honeysuckle's apartment. Placing his forepaws upon the side of her bed, the dog looked long and steadily at the wasted form before him and held his ear intently for a moment over the maiden's heart. Then, with a slight cough he deposited from his mouth into her outstretched hand, a tiny stone. Touching her wrist with his right paw, he motioned to her to swallow the stone.
"Yes, my dear, obey him," counselled her father, as she turned to him inquiringly, "for good Dr. Dog has been sent to your bedside by the mountain fairies, who have heard of your illness and who wish to invite you back to life again."
Without further delay the sick girl, who was by this time almost burned away by the fever, raised her hand to her lips and swallowed the tiny charm. Wonder of wonders! No sooner had it passed her lips than a miracle occurred. The red flush passed away from her face, the pulse resumed its normal beat, the pains departed from her body, and she arose from the bed well and smiling.
Flinging her arms about her father's neck, she cried out in joy, "Oh, I am well again; well and happy; thanks to the medicine of the good physician."
The noble dog barked three times, wild with delight at hearing these tearful words of gratitude, bowed low, and put his nose in Honeysuckle's outstretched hand.
Mr. Min, greatly moved by his daughter's magical recovery, turned to the strange physician, saying, "Noble Sir, were it not for the form you have taken, for some unknown reason, I would willingly give four times the sum in silver that I promised for the cure of the girl, into your possession. As it is, I suppose you have no use for silver, but remember that so long as we live, whatever we have is yours for the asking, and I beg of you to prolong your visit, to make this the home of your old age—in short, remain here for ever as my guest—nay, as a member of my family."
The dog barked thrice, as if in assent. From that day he was treated as an equal by father and daughter. The many servants were commanded to obey his slightest whim, to serve him with the most expensive food on the market, to spare no expense in making him the happiest and best-fed dog in all the world. Day after day he ran at Honeysuckle's side as she gathered flowers in her garden, lay down before her door when she was resting, guarded her Sedan chair when she was carried by servants into the city. In short, they were constant companions; a stranger would have thought they had been friends from childhood.
One day, however, just as they were returning from a journey outside her father's compound, at the very instant when Honeysuckle was alighting from her chair, without a moment's warning, the huge animal dashed past the attendants, seized his beautiful mistress in his mouth, and before anyone could stop him, bore her off to the mountains. By the time the alarm was sounded, darkness had fallen over the valley and as the night was cloudy no trace could be found of the dog and his fair burden.
Once more the frantic father left no stone unturned to save his daughter. Huge rewards were offered, bands of woodmen scoured the mountains high and low, but, alas, no sign of the girl could be found! The unfortunate father gave up the search and began to prepare himself for the grave. There was nothing now left in life that he cared for—nothing but thoughts of his departed daughter. Honeysuckle was gone for ever.
"Alas!" said he, quoting the lines of a famous poet who had fallen into despair:
❝ My whiting hair would make an endless rope, Yet would not measure all my depth of woe.❞
Several long years passed by; years of sorrow for the ageing man, pining for his departed daughter. One beautiful October day he was sitting in the very same pavilion where he had so often sat with his darling. His head was bowed forward on his breast, his forehead was lined with grief. A rustling of leaves attracted his attention. He looked up. Standing directly in front of him was Dr. Dog, and lo, riding on his back, clinging to the animal's shaggy hair, was Honeysuckle, his long-lost daughter; while standing near by were three of the handsomest boys he had ever set eyes upon!
"Ah, my daughter! My darling daughter, where have you been all these years?" cried the delighted father, pressing the girl to his aching breast. "Have you suffered many a cruel pain since you were snatched away so suddenly? Has your life been filled with sorrow?"
"Only at the thought of your grief," she replied, tenderly, stroking his forehead with her slender fingers; "only at the thought of your suffering; only at the thought of how I should like to see you every day and tell you that my husband was kind and good to me. For you must know, dear father, this is no mere animal that stands beside you. This Dr. Dog, who cured me and claimed me as his bride because of your promise, is a great magician. He can change himself at will into a thousand shapes. He chooses to come here in the form of a mountain beast so that no one may penetrate the secret of his distant palace."
"Then he is your husband?" faltered the old man, gazing at the animal with a new expression on his wrinkled face.
"Yes; my kind and noble husband, the father of my three sons, your grandchildren, whom we have brought to pay you a visit."
"And where do you live?"
"In a wonderful cave in the heart of the great mountains; a beautiful cave whose walls and floors are covered with crystals, and encrusted with sparkling gems. The chairs and tables are set with jewels; the rooms are lighted by a thousand glittering diamonds. Oh, it is lovelier than the palace of the Son of Heaven himself! We feed of the flesh of wild deer and mountain goats, and fish from the clearest mountain stream. We drink cold water out of golden goblets, without first boiling it, for it is purity itself. We breathe fragrant air that blows through forests of pine and hemlock. We live only to love each other and our children, and oh, we are so happy! And you, father, you must come back with us to the great mountains and live there with us the rest of your days, which, the gods grant, may be very many."
The old man pressed his daughter once more to his breast and fondled the children, who clambered over him rejoicing at the discovery of a grandfather they had never seen before.
From Dr. Dog and his fair Honeysuckle are sprung, it is said, the well-known race of people called the Yus, who even now inhabit the mountainous regions of the Canton and Hunan provinces. It is not for this reason, however, that we have told the story here, but because we felt sure every reader would like to learn the secret of the dog that cured a sick girl and won her for his bride.

NSFW #07: Second Chance
One last check. John Bishop Church and Mike McGuire stood before the vanity mirror of a makeup table. John winced slightly as he adjusted the knot of his tie so it laid flush against the collar of his dress shirt. In the silence of this prelude, John’s soft breathing was ragged. His cheeks were pale and cool to the touch despite a layer of perspiration already accumulating on his forehead. He retrieved a handkerchief from the inside of his suit jacket and dabbed away the sweat before returning it back to its pocket. He averted his gaze from Mike even through the reflection. “Okay. Let’s do this.” “Hold up. One sec.” Mike looked to their partner with furrowed brows, an expression of genuine, heartfelt concern on their face. Reaching out, they place one hand on his arm. “It’s not too late to not do this. I mean if you want to hold off for this week I totally understand, and I bet Ashley and Iggy would too. I mean, no offense, you know that… but you look kinda awful.” “They don’t make that decision.” John looked down at her hand and smirked. The expression, imagined possibly, brought a little color back into his face. “I’ll be okay. I’ll have to be.” “If you say so, then I believe you. I mean, shit. I know how bad we both want this. Like, real fucking bad, more than anybody.” “Then, let’s show them.” The camera moved through a pair of doors into a magnificent reception hall, all vibrant, lush red and gold-veined white marble. Gilded alabaster pillars line the balcony, bordered by elegant black wrought railings. It took the viewer up the claret carpeted stairway, beneath the grand crystal chandelier, through another pair of doors into a gorgeous theater in the same color scheme, the high ceiling decorated with gilded scrolling and the seats upholstered in ruby. Finally, the camera stopped, its wielder taking a seat in the front row. The stage’s ceiling was blocked in burgundy and slopes back, the backdrop also deep red and white, the wooden planks of the stage floor slightly scuffed from years of use. The house lights dimmed, and at the center of all this majesty two spotlights hit the stage, one at each side. Into these, Bishop Church stepped into the left one, Mike McGuire the right, and the lights trailed them until they met in the center. Mike slowly, deliberately slipped her aviators off, grinning a bit. “Evening, EWC faithful. Look at where ya boys are at tonight! Check these digs out. Fancy, huh? Just perfect for a big occasion, and trust me on this- this is a big fucking occasion. And we were gonna pull out all the stops for it too. You wouldn’t believe the sheer level of ridiculous hijinx we had planned for this. But…” She gave a glance over to her partner. He, however, did not remove his shades. “Better reserved for our opponents. That is, after all, their modus operandi. For fun. Remember that? Mr. Lutter assembled a group of super friends that failed to live up to that ideal. And after a purge, he seems to have it just right.” John shrugged. “Swango. Brizzie. Don’t take that as a dismissal of your talents. Your detractors will label you inexperienced, ineffectual, and irreverent. However, at Night of Champions, they could only call you winners.” The lights rose just slightly, the ambience brightened a bit. From somewhere unseen, a soft, uplifting tune began to play. Not loud enough to be obstructive or drown out the words the pair were saying, though- just audible enough to be heard clearly. “You two got magic. The same kinda magic we had when we first started out. You literally just got your kite off the ground and you’re flying like a couple’a fuckin’ pros, and that’s badass. It’s not easy to do that, y’know. Tag teaming ain’t easy. Contrary to popular belief you can’t just throw two people together, no matter how capable, and expect them to win goddamn matches if they ain’t got a drop of chemistry. Heh, ask Merc and Jerk about that.” “You won’t get a real answer out of either of them.” And then John removed his shades as well. Normally his gaze was passive and distant but at this time, blue eyes stared at the viewing audience. Perhaps at NSFW’s opponents. “But that night. The very night that we broke The Limit, the landscape of the tag team division started to change for the better. Many will attribute it to our new Tag Team champions. Some even to Mike and myself. I would say that a bit of the credit belongs to the efforts made in the face of seemingly insurmountable adversity. So it is no surprise to me that you stand opposite of us. With the opportunity that we have been fighting every inch of the way for.” The lights brightened a little further. “You’re the challenge we’ve been waiting for. This division as it stands right now? It’s the division we’ve been wanting to fight in. And right past you? The chance we’ve been working so fuckin’ hard for, since day one. I’m pumped for it. Church is. We got electric in our veins, but… do you?” Mike’s brows furrowed, the lights dimming back down almost somberly, with a slight blue tinge. “Brizzie. You don’t have that For Fun mojo going on much right now. And I get it. I got nothin’ but respect for Nos, and I don’t blame you if your head ain’t in the game. But you gotta understand… you ain’t gonna beat us like that. Not by a long shot.” “As your fellow employers. Perhaps even your friends, we are deeply concerned with what has happened. But understand something.” He stepped forward. The lights began to brighten, the blue beginning to fade away. “Monday Night. Houston. The main event. Our very first main event. With the chance we’ve been asking for on the line. If your music plays. If you two walk out. If you get into the ring with Mike McGuire and Bishop Church, you are telling us one thing. That you are ready. The bell rings. Our concern takes a backseat. Losing this match means that we are deprived another chance to represent this division. This business means everything to me. It is the most important-” Mike reached out. Her hand rested comfortably on his jacket-sheathed bicep. “It is one of the most important parts of my life. I think I understand my partner enough by now to know that she agrees. I am not content to be on the sidelines however. That’s what losing that match will do to us. Losing means we sit back another night and watch other people take what we have earned with our blood. It would be foolish to make ultimatums. The world doesn’t end with one shortfall. But after all this time, it doesn’t feel right. So ask yourselves? With circumstances as they stand, what would a defeat mean to you? Chalk it up to inexperience. Momentum not being on your side maybe.” “Yeah. You guys are brand new, right out of the box. We ain't exactly old news ourselves, but we kinda got the ‘new car smell’ knocked off us by now. We got, in a way, more to gain from this than you two, and a hell of a lot more to lose. I don’t know how much you guys want the tag titles, but I can fuckin’ promise one thing. It ain’t near as much as we do.” The intensity of the lighting was almost at full house strength now, the coloring shed of its melancholy blue and, instead, tinged with gold. “We came here with two goals. Revive the tag team division, and be its fucking champions. I think we can consider Goal One met. Two? Like I mentioned. Runs right through the Rockin’ Dreamland you got going on. But we can’t stop. We WON’T stop. No Sympathy For Wifey- at least, not in between those bells. And I’m sorry if that seems mean. Trust me, I wish to fuck this thing with Nos wasn’t happening at all, much less now, but gold waits for nobody.” “So that is what I meant. You two come down and you forsake all of that strife for that moment in time. Iggy, Ashley, you took everything from two teams that didn’t give you a chance. We consider you two our greatest challenge.” He turned his head and addressed his partner eye to eye. “Mike, remember the last time we had a chance like this? We thought of ourselves to be the heirs apparent.” “And we came up fuckin’ short. Just by a hair, but you know what they say about horseshoes and hand grenades. We played it cool, y’know, ‘tomorrow is another day’ and all that positive happy crappy B.S. but you know what? It fuckin’ stung. And it’s a feeling I never… and I think I can safely say, WE never… want to deal with again. The fuckin’ feeling of seeing a golden opportunity slip through your fingers. We ain’t gonna let it happen again, no matter what we gotta do.” The soft gold illumination intensified, became sharper. “So come out. For Fun. And we’ll take everything you have and throw it back at you. No jokes. No time machines. No more silly names. No song and dance. No more platitudes about respect.” “This is our second shot for a shot. And it’ll be our last one, because after this one, we won’t fuckin’ well need another one. We’ve been put through a fucking meat grinder this summer. We’ve been table’d, chair’d, thrown off shit, beat to a fucking pulp, my partner damn near got disemboweled, and in the middle of all that, we’ve gone through damn near the entire division that WE rebuilt. Our literal blood, sweat, and tears are all over the fucking place.” More intense now. The entire stage was bathed in vivid golden light. “You guys got the magic, but you haven’t paid your dues. You haven’t earned it. You don’t have the rights to it, not yet.” “So we offer the same courtesy that we did to the Unholy Two. Sure, we’ve met. But we haven’t been formally introduced. Where it matters. Iggy Swango. Ashley Brizzie.” John put the aviators back on. “I’m Bishop Church.” Mike followed suit. “And I’m Mike McGuire.” “We are NSFW.” “And we’re the next EWC Tag Team Champions.” The golden light intensified so brightly that a bright, gilded flash was all that the camera could pick up. When it faded away, NSFW were gone. What does a team do after they rent out Heinz Hall for their own personal statement on their most important match to date? Go grocery shopping. John’s hands were ringed with the loops of plastic grocery bags. He let them slip from his fingers gently on the kitchen table. He also had a week’s worth of mail tucked under the opposite side of his wound. They fell out onto the table and unfolded like an accordion. Mike closed the front door behind them. They had all of the bags full of things that needed to be in the refrigerator so they made a beeline to it. He looked suspiciously at a party sized bag of peanut butter M&Ms that had managed to make it into their cart. But then something else caught his eye. One of the envelopes. “Hey. You got a letter.” She was a phone call or text away. Not too many miles between them. His eyebrows raised quizzically. But it was addressed to just Mike. So not really his business. “From Natalie.”

Contained in the X ‘moonshot manufacturing facility’: Right here’s the place Google’s concepts take flight (or fizzle)
New Post has been published on https://takenews.net/contained-in-the-x-moonshot-manufacturing-facility-right-heres-the-place-googles-concepts-take-flight-or-fizzle/
Contained in the X ‘moonshot manufacturing facility’: Right here’s the place Google’s concepts take flight (or fizzle)
Astro Teller, the “Captain of Moonshots” at Alphabet’s X concept manufacturing facility, exhibits off two of X’s improvements: Google’s self-driving automobile, a enterprise that was spun off as Waymo; and the communications platform at far left that’s used on Venture Loon’s balloons.
MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Why does the Captain of Moonshots put on curler skates to work?
That will sound like the beginning of a joke, however Astro Teller offers a largely critical reply on the complicated that homes the assume tank for Alphabet, Google’s dad or mum firm.
The inline skates assist Teller, the captain who’s on the helm of what’s often known as “X: The Moonshot Manufacturing unit,” get between appointments within the 500,000-square-foot complicated extra shortly.
“This fashion I’m two minutes late versus 4 minutes late,” he advised GeekWire throughout a current tour.
The clock is all the time ticking for Teller, and for X as nicely.
It’s not as if the concept of an concept manufacturing facility was completely new when the Google X lab was based in 2010. Microsoft Analysis has served an identical position for greater than 20 years. Bell Labs and IBM’s analysis facilities return many years additional.
However in the present day’s speedy tempo of innovation and competitors is rising the strain to show blue-sky concepts into marketable services and products. No firm, not even Alphabet, can afford to wager on each hunch. So X’s purpose is to systematize the method of choosing profitable applied sciences.
“We are attempting to be the cardboard counters of innovation, not the gamblers of innovation,” Teller mentioned.
From the surface, X’s spot appears to be like extra like your typical suburban company campus than a manufacturing facility within the 20th-century sense of the phrase. The ability began out within the 1960s as Mountain View’s Mayfield Mall, the primary air-conditioned, enclosed procuring heart in Northern California. After the mall closed down within the 1980s, the house went by way of a few incarnations as an workplace complicated.
When X took over the property in 2015, it gave the power an open-girder, high-tech industrial look, together with naked concrete flooring which are simple for bicycles, scooters and Teller’s rollerblades to navigate. Workplaces, labs and assembly rooms are interspersed with lounge areas, micro-kitchens and a spacious central atrium.
A rooftop that was as soon as a car parking zone for consumers now serves as a drone testing floor. Throughout our go to in late October, you might hear the thrill of Venture Wing’s aerial automobiles up above. A ground-level greensward is surrounded with netting that may be drawn round to offer one other safe space for testing drones. And you’ll often see a Waymo self-driving car with a human behind the wheel, making its rounds by way of the car parking zone.
Waymo is without doubt one of the “graduates” of the moonshot manufacturing facility’s improvement program. It began out as a Google X challenge, however was remodeled right into a stand-alone Alphabet subsidiary final December. This month, Waymo introduced that it’ll quickly go public with a ride-sharing service within the Phoenix space that makes use of totally autonomous automobiles.
X units a excessive bar for the tasks that get a inexperienced gentle: They’ve to deal with an enormous drawback that impacts hundreds of thousands and even billions of individuals. The challenge has to suggest a radical answer to that drawback. And there must be a breakthrough know-how to result in that answer.
“The requirement that every one three of this stuff be true is sufficient to trigger us to throw out greater than 99 p.c of our concepts,” Teller mentioned.
Some concepts undergo months of investigation earlier than they’re nixed: For instance, an automatic vertical farming enterprise was shut down as a result of the challenge staff couldn’t determine easy methods to use the strategy to develop staple crops. (Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos is backing an identical enterprise referred to as Loads in Kent, Wash.) A challenge referred to as Foghorn labored out a approach to convert seawater into carbon-neutral methanol gas, however at an unworkable price of $15 a gallon.
Different concepts take some time to percolate, such because the power-generating kites of Makani, the supply drones of Venture Wing, and the Google Glass challenge that induced an enormous fuss when it went beta in 2013-2014 and was just lately revived as an enterprise product for workplaces.
Then there are the moonshot stars. Along with Waymo, X’s graduates embrace Google Watch, a geothermal vitality enterprise referred to as Dandelion, and a healthcare enterprise referred to as Verily.
X’s newest star hasn’t even graduated but. It’s Venture Loon, a balloon-based wi-fi communications platform that’s been below X’s wing since 2011. Loon took the highlight within the wake of Hurricane Maria, which knocked out energy and communications for practically all of Puerto Rico’s three.four million residents.
Earlier than the storm, Venture Loon’s staff had been engaged on an AI-based navigation system that may hold high-altitude balloons over a given space for weeks or months at a time to offer aerial web connections. Peru was the first testing floor, and Puerto Rico was one of many launch websites. After the hurricane hit, the main target shifted to filling the hole in Puerto Rico. The staff shortly labored out preparations with Puerto Rico’s authorities and federal authorities in addition to AT&T and T-Cellular to spice up connectivity.
“The Puerto Rico factor hasn’t been simple, as a result of we didn’t anticipate for Loon to work that approach,” Venture Loon engineer Sal Candido mentioned. “We weren’t engaged on navigation for Puerto Rico, we weren’t working with any of the companions, we didn’t anticipate to deliver up service that quick. However that’s the best way this challenge works, and the best way X works. We thought we’d give it a strive. Hopefully, we’ve been capable of assist some individuals.”
X says Venture Loon is at present offering primary web connectivity for greater than 100,000 individuals in Puerto Rico.
“We’re very bullish about Loon, they usually have important work nonetheless to do — name it two or three minor miracles that they nonetheless want so as to be a thriving enterprise,” Teller mentioned. “However in contrast to some tasks, they’ve about 10 completely different levers that they will pull, to allow them to unfold that want for 2 or three small miracles throughout loads of various things. … We have now nice confidence that they’re going to do it.”
Teller voiced nice confidence in X’s future as nicely. Greater than a yr in the past, there have been rumblings that the moonshot manufacturing facility was getting slowed down in organizational inertia, however the emergence of Waymo and different graduates appears to have turned the tide.
Thought factories are turning right into a progress business — thanks partly to new entrants within the Seattle space akin to BlueDot, Mental Ventures’ ISF Incubator and the Allen Institute for Synthetic Intelligence’s startup incubator. The best way Teller sees it, all that curiosity validates the strategy that he’s been pioneering for years.
“I really feel like we’re in competitors with the issues, not in competitors with different individuals attempting to resolve issues,” he advised GeekWire. “I’m so glad to see different teams attempting to resolve a few of humanity’s issues.”
So does that imply Teller’s glad with X’s system? No approach.
“We’re by no means proud of the mannequin that now we have. We’re continually attempting to study and enhance it,” he mentioned. “We have now a joke internally: ‘We’re the worst moonshot manufacturing facility on this planet … apart from all the opposite ones.’ ”

“Rajasthan” always a ring a bell for the words like “Royals”, “Rajputana”, “Rajwadas” et al and I think that it’s my love towards this place that makes me biased towards it and it always tops my chart when it comes to culture, beauty and of course food. Recent launch of Rajuputana journal along with Royal Fables @Fio Cookhouse and bar gave me the opportunity to experience everything together, the same authentic way..
Rajputana Collective: A quarterly that captures the world of Regal Rajputs by Urvashi Singh of Khimsar.
Royal Fables: A platform that showcase Imperial India in all it’s splendor. It strives hard to conserve the tradition of Palace Studios or karkhanas that were integral to royal India. The indigenous Art, textile, costumes and jewelry making tradition of a region were lovingly patronized by the ruling royal family who bought in a few master craftsmen to the palace to create master pieces infused with their refined aesthetics. With the artisanal traditions perished too. Royal Fables is a humble endeavor to revive the tradition as well as highlight the music, art, cuisine and architecture of royals.
Evening was spread between the fine showcase of Royal fables featuring Gond Art by Rajkumari Nandini Singh Jhabua, Kite Colors inspired hand painted saree by Princess AlkaRani of Pratapgarh, Chikankari splendor from lucknow by Rajumari veena singh of Padrauna, Boho chic ensemble by Kanwarani Kamini Singh of Seohara and Gold weave from the looms of Mansa Gujarat patronized by Thakurani Darshana Kumari of Mandawa.
Food was worth dying for. All the Drinks were Jack Daniel’s infused and the bartender really did a striking work of craftsmanship with it. They served the starters only but then there was nothing we could complaint about. I think the pictures posted here will speak about them. Taste was up to the mark, there was heaven in every bite. Staff was courteous and carried a warm smile all the time.
Décor was worth drooling, everything was carefully selected and arranged in a perfect manner to make a perfect sense.

Arc-V Aftermath: Knight and Prince (22/26)
When all is said and done, things have quickly recovered in the four dimensions. But when weird things start happening, the Yu-Salad Boys and the Bracelet Girls quickly realize they have some loose ends to fix. Co-written with @violetganache42.
WARNING: Dub names will be featured in the story.
As a girl who grew up in an elite environment, Lulu has access to everything she needs to look absolutely perfect. Shampoo to keep her hair silky soft, face cleanser to avoid possible acne, lotion for making sure her skin is smooth... She even has the finest ear picks in the city so her ears always remain clean.
Yuto, on the other hand, was a completely different story. Born in a middle class environment, he didn't mind if his face was slightly dirty or if his hair was out of place. Even when he started living with the Obsidians, he wasn't completely obsessed with his looks.
The next morning, at the Obsidian house, the couple were getting ready for the second round of the Team Duel Tournament. Needless to say, there was a strong difference in their morning routines. While Lulu was carefully brushing her hair before she could style it, Yuto was having a hard time cleaning his ears. After hearing yet another frustrated sound, she put her brush on her vanity and wheeled over to her private bathroom.
"Are you having a hard time?" Lulu asked.
"Sort of," Yuto answered, holding up an ear pick. "I don't really clean my ears a lot."
"Come here," Lulu said, patting her lap. "I'll help you get your ears clean."
Yuto walked over to where Lulu was and handed her the ear pick before kneeling down and placing the right side of his head on her lap. With her right hand holding the pick, she began helping him clean his ears. She used the ladle of the ear pick to scrape out ear wax, using her other hand to stroke his hair. Yuto let out a content sigh, closing his eyes as he let his girlfriend continue the intimate gesture.
When Lulu finished using the down puff to remove any extra ear wax, she gently patted Yuto's head, indicating him to switch sides. He shifted his head so the left side was on her lap. Lulu then tucked Yuto's stray bang behind his ear before repeating the process. He sighed again, adoring her gentle touch.
Suddenly, Lulu hit a sweet spot, causing Yuto to moan. "Lulu..." he muttered.
She suddenly remembered about his sensitive area near his right ear, where his small, faint, and somewhat noticeable scar was, hiding underneath the locks of light purple hair. Smirking, she finished cleaning out ear wax with the ladle before switching to the down puff. But this time, she removed extra ear wax very suggestively, using her other hand to gently touch his outer ear.
Yuto moaned from his girlfriend's gentle touches, his hand gripping the skirt of her pale yellow sundress. He adored this pleasurable feeling, wishing this moment could last forev-
"What are you two doing?"
The two looked up to see Shay standing in front of the bathroom door. They didn't hear him come in, but hearing his voice made things somewhat…embarrassing.
Yuto lifted up his head. "This isn't what it looks like!" he exclaimed, blushing heavily.
"I get that you two are bound to get these kind of moments, but we have a tournament to get to," Shay reminded the lovebirds.
"Right," Yuto said, leaving the private bathroom to get dressed. "Sorry about that."
After shutting the bathroom door when Lulu wheeled out to follow him, Yuto headed towards the bed where his clothes laid nicely across. He couldn't believe he was going to be wearing his pre-Invasion attire again; he wore it when he first met Lulu. Speaking of her, she was tying her hair into her signature bow-shaped style and secured it with her feather-shaped barrette before putting on her sunhat and white flats. To them, they were almost getting a blast from the past.
Yuto smiled softly. "Isn't that the sunhat you wore during the Heartland Spring Festival?" he asked as he finished getting dressed.
"Of course it is," Lulu answered. "It was the first time we hung out outside of school."
"And look how far we came," Yuto said, putting on his glasses. He gave Lulu a loving kiss. "Not even a horrible crisis can separate us."
"Of course, sweet knight," Lulu said. "Our love is unbreakable."
"You can flirt on the way over to the Center Duel Field," Shay pointed out. "We have a tournament to get to."
The trio headed out of the bedroom and went downstairs, with Kameron and Astra meeting up with them before making their way to the car and driving to LID. With this being the second day of the tournament, all the people who attended yesterday—including some of the Cardfighters—were returning to their seats while some of the losing teams joined the audience and took their own. As for the winning teams, they were brought to the Center Duel Field with their families and friends: Team Smiles with Yusho, Yoko, Skip, Mr. Strong, Allie, Tate, Frederick, Aura, and the Lancers, Team Noble with Kameron, Astra, Cathy, Alex, and Kite, Team Turbo with Akiza and a few other Turbo Duelists, and Team Obelisk with Leo and the former Obelisk Force members.
All around the stadium, many people were cheering for the four teams, especially for Team Smiles, who have become the fan favorite team…much to Yugo's chagrin. Despite realizing that Jean-Michel Roget was responsible for the High Council's disbandment, he still wasn't pleased with how everyone was preferring Yuya over him. They both endured contradicting sufferings, but he still believed the people loved the Performapal user more than him.
Rin quickly noticed Yugo getting tensed. "Calm down," she said, rubbing her boyfriend's shoulders. "Your Speedroids are just as entertaining as Yuya's Performapals."
"I hope so," Yugo said, still not relaxing.
With the four teams gathered, Declan and Aichi began the opening ceremony. "Welcome to the Team Duel Tournament finals," Declan said. "While yesterday's matches showed promising Duelists, only four teams were able to move on to the finals. Today the four teams will take part in a standard elimination round. The four teams will split into two groups with the teams dueling each other. Once the final two teams are determined, they will battle it out with the winning team being crowned the winners of the first-ever Team Duel Tournament."
"The teams facing off were selected based on their performances from yesterday," Aichi said. "We have the fan favorites of Team Smiles, the unbeatable Team Noble, the Turbo Duelists of Team Turbo, and the Wicked Dueltainers of Team Obelisk."
The audience applauded for the announced and outstanding finalists, especially for Yuya. Yugo stared at him from a not too far distance and wondered if everyone loved him because of his natural charm. He then started considering about changing his current hairstyle into a more attractive style.
"You alright, pal?" Crow asked Yugo.
The banana-banged Duelist ran a hand threw his hair. "I think I might need a comb-"
His response was cut short by the startled gasps of everyone in the Center Duel Field. He turned around to see what the big deal was, only to find Yuto strangling someone out of sheer anger. From the looks of things, the eggplant-haired teen must have recognized the former Obelisk Force student, as well as Sora, who was rushing from his team to where the incident was coming from. Sure enough, he also spotted his face and immediately knew who it was: the same person who killed Lono Osaku… Chazz Princeton.
"Well well, if it isn't the goth loner," Chazz said.
Yuto tightened his grip. "You're going to pay for killing my mom!" he snarled.
Chazz scoffed at the threat. "Like I was trying to kill her," he said. "I found out about the Professor's ultimate goals: save Ray Akaba and prevent Zarc Nightstone's resurrection. I thought killing one of Zarc's fragments might get me promoted. That woman was only an interference."
Yuto couldn't believe what he was hearing coming out of this psycho's mouth. If he was killed by the Chaos Ancient Gear Giant, he and his counterparts wouldn't have received new chances to find themselves and learn their Skills given to them by Zarc. He wouldn't have been able to get a job at ObsidianCorp and determine his future. He wouldn't have gotten his first kiss from Lulu. The words made him furious because he knows Zarc felt bad for what he has done yet Chazz doesn't seem to care in the slightest. Meanwhile, with Sora, he was just about to help calm Yuto down when he heard footsteps coming from Leo, who had overheard the explanation behind Lono's unfortunate murder.
"Mr. Princeton, how did you find out about all of this?" Leo asked.
"I overheard you talking about your plans to some crazy bug-eyed man," Chazz answered.
Leo knew exactly who he was referring to as his eyes shifted towards a certain someone in the audience: The Doktor, who was unsealed from his card once Yuya was revived and the dimensions split back into four. Yesterday, during the preliminaries, he was initially concerned when he was watching Team Turbo's duels and saw Rin Fusion Summoning Crystal Bell; he eventually relaxed and was pleased with how she integrated the Fusion monster into her deck and brought out the card's true beauty. Today, he heard what Chazz was talking about in regards to the Invasion and Revival Zero and how those plans inadvertently gave him an idea for a promotion. The poor guy can't seem to catch a break throughout the tournament's duration.
"Yuto, please unhand Mr. Princeton," Leo said. "I'll have to speak to him about not straying from direct orders."
Yuto let go of Chazz. "This isn't over," the eggplant-haired teen said, sounding calm yet miffed.
With the interruption taken card of, Declan proceeded to announce the pairings. "As I was saying," he said. "The first round is Team Smiles vs. Team Noble, followed by Team Turbo vs. Team Obelisk."
Well, isn't that peachy? Yugo gets to have a rematch against Yuri and no doubt he's going to show the Predaplant user just how strong he, his Speedroids, and his Clear Wings really are. As for Yuya, he was surprised to see him going up against his own cousin.
"How about that?" Yuri asked his teammates. "I get to duel XYZ again."
"Don't you mean 'moron'?" Dennis asked.
"Of course, my friend," Yuri answered. "But Rin is proof that the word doesn't seem to affect him. Luckily I found a new nickname that would have better results."
He remembered the conversation he had with Yugo, Yuya, and Shay back at Heartland Park. He was aware of this Yuma person that Yuto replaced in this timeline. Apparently Yuma was the opposite of Yuto: rude, loud, and quick-tempered. In other words, he was more like Yugo. Yuri noticed how that comparison irked the banana-banged Duelist more than being called a moron, so he decided to take full advantage of that.
"The first round is about to begin," Declan announced. "So will Team Smiles and Team Noble please step up?"
The two teams walked towards the center of the arena to get ready for their matches against each other. Unlike yesterday, Shay knew Gong would be able to withstand his Raidraptors, so he would take part in the round. Lulu happily greeted Zuzu, while Yuya felt content with dueling his cousin. With the dividers and Action Fields set up, the three simultaneous duels begin.
"Alright Yuto, let's get this duel started!" Yuya happily exclaimed.
Yuto's furrowed his eyebrows out of perplexity on what was up with Yuya. Was this his Dueltaining style? Even if their souls were merged and he got some glimpses of Dueltainment during the Arc League Championship, it still confused him on how it is done. However, his cousin clearing his throat snapped him out of his thoughts.
"Come on..." Yuya half-whispered. "Aren't you gonna say something?"
"What am I supposed to say?" Yuto asked. He wasn't a Dueltainer like Yuya; heck, he hasn't learned what Dueltaining is throughout most of his life back at Heartland.
"Anything!" Yuya half-whispered again.
"Okay..." Yuto said. He straightened his posture. "This shall be a show worthy of a good performance!" Deep down, he knew that was a bad attempt at saying an introductory Dueltaining sentence.
Yuya was too embarrassed and surprised to even respond. "Let's just duel!" he said as he activated his Duel Disk.
Yuto activated his Duel Disk as well to initiate their first Action Duel with each other, following a shout of "Let's duel!" from the two.
The eggplant-haired teen went first. "I'll start things off with a couple of face downs," he said. "Your turn."
Yuya instantly caught on to the two face-downs; they were Yuto's signature starting move. He may have to plan out his turn carefully, and after scanning the Action Field for where the Action Cards may be located, he figured out his strategy. "My turn!" he announced as he drew a card. "And I'll activate the Ritual Spell Odd-Eyes Advent!"
"What's this?!" Nico exclaimed. "Yuya is Ritual Summoning?!"
"You bet!" Yuya answered. "And I'll use Performapal Splashmammoth and Performapal Odd-Eyes Unicorn for the Ritual! Descend from the depths of space and emerge in all your galactic glory! I Ritual Summon Odd-Eyes Gravity Dragon!"
Odd-Eyes Gravity Dragon is a Level 7 EARTH Dragon-Type monster with 2800 ATK and 2500 DEF. He had grayish-navy blue scales with dark orange skin, heterochromia eyes (red on the right, light blue on the left), and light gold borders all over his body, surrounding purple stones on his tail, arms, legs, and feet, keeping hold of a light blue orb on the center of his chest, and supporting the powder blue stones that help him levitate and fly. When this card is special summoned, all Spells and Traps the opponent controls are sent back to the hand and can't activate cards or effects in response…unless they want to pay 500 LP if they want to use card effects. Gravity Dragon's effect can only be used once per turn.
Aura was in awe. "An Odd-Eyes Ritual dragon!" she exclaimed. "How wonderful!"
"I activate Odd-Eyes Gravity Dragon's special ability!" Yuya declared. "All of your face down cards are automatically returned to your hand, so don't even think about using them on me this turn!"
The two face-downs dematerialized from the field and reappeared back into Yuto's hand, much to his frustration. "When did you get that card?" he asked.
"When I got my other three new Odd-Eyes dragons," Yuya answered. "Now I activate my Skill: Mind Merge!"
With a roar from Gravity Dragon, he and Yuya merged their minds together, as seen by the teen's body falling limp onto the floor and the dragon gaining his owner's personality and mannerisms.
"And there it is, folks!" Nico exclaimed. "Yuya has pulled off another mind merge! What an amazing Skill he has!"
Odd-Eyes Gravity Dragon roared happily as the crowd chanted Yuya's name. Meanwhile, Team Turbo was watching the simultaneous duels from the sidelines, including Yugo, who still couldn't get over how everyone was rooting for Yuya. Why did everyone like him anyway? Was it his hair? His face? His personality? Or even his dueling style?
Shinji noticed Yugo's frustrated expression. "You feeling alright?" he asked.
"No," Yugo admitted. "Those cheers should be for me! Yuya shouldn't hog the spotlight!"
"You said something about needing a comb, right?" Shinji asked.
"Yeah," Yugo answered.
Shinji gave Yugo a comb. "Here," he said. "You can borrow one of mine."
Yugo thanked him before taking off in search for a mirror or some sort of reflective surface. As he ran through the halls, he stopped in front of two bathrooms and headed insides the one designated for males; sure enough, there was a mirror hung up on the wall above some sinks, so he took the time to figure what hairstyle he should go with.
After a bit of pondering, Yugo started to comb out his bangs. As he did so, the blonde locks started to become less banana-shaped. Ultimately his bangs ended up looking more whispy with the shorter locks hanging in front of his eyes. He grinned as he winked and pointed at his reflection, a clicking sound coming from his mouth.
"Lookin' good," Yugo said aloud, happy with the results. "This should help attract some attention."
Meanwhile, back in the arena, Yuto was XYZ Summoning The Phantom Knights of Break Sword. "Rise, my mighty beast!" he exclaimed.
Break Sword galloped onto the field as the headless knight attached to the armored horse brought out his giant sword and wielded it on his right hand. Outside of the arena, a lot of female Duelists cheered for Yuto after successfully performing an XYZ Summon. Although he didn't care about his looks, he does make himself look nice enough up to the point where he looks handsome. Even if Yuya had more fans than his cousin, it was clear the eggplant-haired teen's natural charm can cause the ladies to swoon; it was practically the Kastles' party all over again.
Yuya noticed Yuto smirking as he adjusted his glasses, looking a bit surprised. "Looks like those fans are feeding his ego..." he mused.
"Since I used Ragged Gloves as an Overlay Unit, I'll use 500 life points to give Break Sword an additional 1000 attack points," Yuto said. "Now Phantom Knights of Break Sword, slay Yuya's dragon!"
With an ATK of 3000, Break Sword sped up towards Gravity Dragon as the headless knight readied his sword to unleash his attack. However, the tomato-haired teen was prepared.
"I activate the Action Spell Miracle!" Yuya exclaimed. "So Odd-Eyes Gravity Dragon is here to stay!"
Break Sword slashed his sword through the dragon, not fazing it in the process; however, the normal 200 points of damage was halved as Yuya lost only 100 LP. Yuto then had no choice but to end his turn.
"And with that, Lulu Obsidian has secured Team Noble's first win for the round!" Nico announced.
Her duel against Zuzu ended somewhat early due to how powerful her Lyrilusc monsters were, especially her Assembled Nightingale. Even Zuzu was amazed. "Wow," she said. "I didn't think you were that good."
"Well I was the one who taught Shay how to duel," Lulu replied.
Zuzu was confused by that choice of wording. "Don't you mean he taught you how to duel?" she asked.
"Nope," Lulu answered. "I taught him."
When the Obsidian siblings were growing up, Shay never got a chance to duel because he was busy preparing himself for when he becomes the new head of ObsidianCorp. Once he was given permission to play Duel Monsters, Lulu let him borrow some of her old cards so she could teach him how to play.
Zuzu was surprised to hear that. "Oh..." she said, recalling how powerful Shay's Raidraptors are. "That's...pretty unexpected to hear."
As the two Energy Girls waited in the arena for their teammates to finish their duels, Yuya and Yuto continued on with stunning progress. They were neck-and-neck with each other, always finding counters and strategies to ensure them a victory. At that point, Yuya was able to set the Pendulum Scale with Odd-Eyes Mirage Dragon and Odd-Eyes Persona Dragon to Pendulum Summon Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon. He then overlayed Odd-Eyes Gravity Dragon and Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon to XYZ Summon Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon. He was a Rank 7 WATER Dragon-Type XYZ monster with 2800 ATK and 2500 DEF. it had red and blue heterochromia eyes, dark purple skin, and light gray and light blue armor all over his entire body, encasing a dark blue orb on his chest. By using an overlay unit, Yuya can special summon an Odd-Eyes monster from the Graveyard if any of his or the opponent's monsters declares an attack. If this monster was sent to the Graveyard, an Odd-Eyes monster is special summoned from the Extra Deck except Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon. Each effect can be used once per turn.
"So that your replacement for Dark Rebellion," Yuto commented. He smirked. "Not bad, but Break Sword is still stronger."
"Not for long," Yuya said. "I activate the Spell card Spiral Flame Strike to wipe out your Break Sword!"
Using the first effect of Spiral Flame Strike, Absolute Dragon blasted out a magenta beam with black streaks spiraling around it to destroy Break Sword. However, Yuto was then allowed to bring Ragged Gloves and Silent Boots back on the field in defense mode, now at Level 4.
"Nice try," Yuto said. "But I still have the materials I need to-"
"Oh, I know," Yuya replied. "Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon, attack The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves! Double Slash Strike!"
Absolute Dragon used its signature move to attack and destroy Ragged Gloves; since it was in defense position, no damage was dealt. But oddly enough, Yuto wasn't annoyed. He was actually smiling.
"I can't believe it," Yuto said. "You actually fell for it."
Fell for what? Was this a trap that Yuto set up this whole time? That statement confused Yuya because he knows what his strategies are. "What do you mean?" he asked.
"You'll see," Yuto answered. With Yuya's turn over, he drew a card and smiled even more. "By banishing The Phantom Knights of Ragged Gloves from my Graveyard, I can transfer Phantom Knights' Wing from my deck to my Graveyard. And by banishing that card, I'll bring back The Phantom Knights of Break Sword."
Before Yuya knew it, Break Sword was special summoned back onto the field, lacking any Overlay Units. "But that's not all," Yuto said. "I activate the very card I drew during this turn: The Phantom Knights' Rank-Up-Magic Launch!"
He targeted Break Sword and used it to rebuild the Overlay Network; since its ability prohibits Yuto from special summoning non-DARK monsters for the rest of his turn, he managed to work his way around it.
"Cloaked in shadows and relentless in its objective, I call upon the most dangerous of dragons!" Yuto chanted. "Go, Rank-Up XYZ Evolution! Come forth and strike, Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon!"
Yuto's ace monster appeared onto his side of the field, with his tail whipping out, his wings bolting open, and his long chin reflecting the luminescence of the lightning before bellowing out his iconic roar. But Yuya wasn't worried. He knew Yuto has a hard time using his Skill.
"Now, Dark Rebellion, use your special ability and absorb half of Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon's strength!" Yuto commanded.
Dark Rebellion extended his wings and shot out purple lightning to encase Absolute Dragon in it while halving his ATK and adding it to his own, increasing it from 2500 to 3900 until the end of this turn. But the eggplant-haired teen wasn't done.
"I activate my Skill!" Yuto exclaimed, running over to Dark Rebellion. "Mind Merge!"
Throughout the past few weeks of training and practicing, he has learned a new way to manage his Skill. Once he got on top of Dark Rebellion, his eyes started to glow periwinkle—much like when he Awakened—as their minds started to merge and they acted as a single entity.
Yuya was flabbergasted. "You can do that?!" he asked. He always thought Yuto continues struggling to manage with his Skill, so seeing this was quite the surprise for him. But he didn't want to miss out on the fun, so he proceeded to activate his Skill. Seeing that he wanted this duel to be a Dueltainment show, there was no way he's missing this opportunity since his own cousin was involved.
"I activate my Skill: Mind Merge!" Yuya cheerfully declared. He and Absolute Dragon synchronized and unified their minds into one until he saw that he has become one with his monster, as seen by his unconscious body on the floor of the arena. The sapphire-scaled dragon let out a cheerful roar, indicating to the audience that the fun has begun.
"Now hold on a minute!" Melissa exclaimed. "Since when can Duelists use their Skills on their opponent's turn?!"
"I'm not sure," Nico admitted. "But it seems Yuya has other ideas in mind." He looked at their bios. "He and Yuto recently found out their mothers were sisters prior to the dimensions separating, so Yuya wishes to perform alongside his cousin."
"Well that's mighty nice," Melissa commented.
As Nico and Melissa commentated on the first round, Yuya started his performance through the body of Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon; he knew it was still Yuto's turn, so he decided to encourage him—who was still fused with Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon—to join in as well.
However, Yuto was deeply confused. Why was his cousin running around the arena? A confused sound appeared from Dark Rebellion, but Absolute Dragon happily roared again. It sounded like the two were communicating through their dragons. Absolute Dragon continued to cheerfully growl and roar at Dark Rebellion, wanting to convince him to join in on the performance. The latter was still confused on how Dueltaining even works; even if Yuto saw glimpses of it when his soul was fused with Yuya's, he still didn't quite understand it.
Lulu laughed in amusement as she watched the duel. "Come on, Yuto!" she called out. "Don't you want to have fun with your cousin?"
Despite the arena being split into three, Dark Rebellion started to softly purr, mostly because Yuto had a feeling Lulu liked the thought of him spending time with Yuya more. The last time they spent some bonding time together was a few days before the Paradise Prep school dance. Letting out a playful roar, the XYZ dragon proceeded to fly into the sky, ready for the performance.
As Dark Rebellion soared through the air, Absolute Dragon shot crystals out from his body as the XYZ dragon produced electricity from his wings. A display of crystals and electricity sparkled all around the dragons, astonishing the audience. "Incredible!" Nico exclaimed as Dark Rebellion did a midair backflip. "I've never seen such a performance!"
Everyone cheered enthusiastically at the stunning and marvelous presentation the two dragons were creating. Yuto was amazed by the reactions. Is this what Dueltainment is all about? Was it really all about keeping the world entertained and smiling? That's what Lulu believes in, and needless to say, Dark Rebellion looked pretty satisfied.
The two dragons continued their performance, shooting out electricity and crystals through the air. Electric bolts then came into contact with the colored gems, which caused them to explode and transform into fireworks. But while Absolute Dragon couldn't fly, Dark Rebellion soared in the sky, the fireworks causing his scales to shine. Yuto enjoyed seeing everyone cheer for him and his cousins. Maybe this Dueltainment thing isn't so bad after all-
"And the winner is Gong Strong!"
The two dragons quickly finished up their last round of fireworks shortly after hearing that Gong won. Through Absolute Dragon's gleeful roars, Yuya was happy to know Team Smiles was tied with Team Noble. With Dark Rebellion back on the ground, the two cousins ended their mind merges.
"So what did you think?" Yuya asked.
Yuto got off of Dark Rebellion, a soft smile on his face. "That was amazing," he answered.
"Aw, you can do better than that!" Yuya said, wanting his cousin to smile wide.
"Trust me, this is my biggest smile," Yuto clarified. He's usually a soft-spoken and quiet person, so in a way, he wasn't as energetic and outgoing like Yuya.
"Alright!" Yuya cheerfully said. "Now let's finish this duel!"
"Of course," Yuto agreed. "Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon, attack Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon! Mauling Mandible Charge!"
Dark Rebellion charged his wings with purple lightning as the purple orbs on them began to illuminate. He then flew over to Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon to pierce him with his long, sword-like chin. However, Yuya was prepared.
"I activate the Trap card Cross Damage!" Yuya announced. "Now you lose the same amount of life points I'm about to lose!"
As Dark Rebellion's chin stabbed through Absolute Dragon, the destroyed monster exploded, engulfing part of the arena in dark gray smoke that barely covered the two, who both lost 1100 LP each.
"Not bad," Yuto said as he ended his turn with a face down. "But Dark Rebellion still has an Overlay Unit."
"I know," Yuya replied as he drew a card. "But this duel is over. This is the final turn!"
Outside of the duel, the Cardfighters who were sitting immediately recognized that phrase Yuya said. They all know "final turn" meant a Cardfighter thinks they'll win based on the card they drew; does that mean he’s going to claim a victory for his team?
"Since Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon was Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon's Overlay Unit, I get to Pendulum Summon him back onto the field!" Yuya exclaimed. "So return to the spotlight, Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon!"
The Pendulum "portal" opened up and Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon ricochet back onto Yuya's side of the field. "But I'm not done!" the tomato-haired teen continued. "I activate the Field Spell Sky Iris to protect Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon!"
Sky Iris was…well, a Field Spell card that prohibits the opponent from using card effects to target Magicians, Performapals, or Odd-Eyes in the Pendulum Zones. Yuya can also select and destroy a face-up card he controls in order to add one Odd-Eyes card from his deck to his hand, but this effect can only be done once per turn.
"I'm also setting this monster face down on the field before I end my turn," Yuya said, knowing Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon is weaker than Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon.
Suspicion crept up Yuto as his turn was about to begin. Yuya never played a monster in face-down defense position before. What is he planning? Regardless of the plan, Yuto drew a card, deciding it would be safer to attack Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon.
"Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon, attack Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon!" Yuto exclaimed. "Mauling Mandible Charge!"
As Dark Rebellion charged for the attack, Yuya smirked. "I activate the Action Spell Trick Distraction!" he declared. "Now Dark Rebellion is forced to attack my face down monster!"
Yuto was flabbergasted. "When did you get that?" he asked.
"During our little fireworks show, I secretly used Odd-Eyes Absolute Dragon's body to bring the Action Spell over to my actual body," Yuya answered.
The face-down card appeared on the field and flipped itself up to reveal itself to be Purple Poison Magician, who was pierced through Dark Rebellion's sword-chin. Purple Poison Magician was a Level 4 Scale 1 DARK Spellcaster-Type monster with 1200 ATK and 2100 DEF. His Pendulum effect gives a battling DARK Spellcaster-Type monster that Yuya controls an additional 1200 ATK during the Battle Phase before sending this card to the Graveyard. His monster effect, which treats him as a Fusion Dragon card, enables his owner to select and destroy a monster on the field after he is destroyed through battle or card effects. Yuya knew exactly which effect he is going to choose.
"Since Purple Poison Magician was sent to the Graveyard, he's taking Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon with him!" Yuya declared. "Vine Whip Ensnarement!"
Purple Poison Magician brought out some vines from the ground and commanded them by whipping them at Dark Rebellion, wrapping him around them, and pulling him down into the Graveyard with the former. Yuri watched on and was proud with this strategy he witnessed because that's something he normally does.
"Not bad, Yuya," Yuri commented. "It seems my best features have rubbed off on you."
Yuto clenched his fists. "I see," he told Yuya. "You have become a lot stronger." He set a card face down.
"Yep!" Yuya happily answered as he drew a card. "Odd-Eyes Phantom Dragon, finish this off with Phantom Spiral Flame!"
"Then it's a good thing I have this," Yuto said. "I activate The Phantom Knights of Wrong Magnetring to negate your dragon's attack!"
For quite some time, the two equally-matched Duelists kept going back and forth with each other in an seemingly endless chain of summoning, activating, destroying, and banishing monsters, Spells, and Traps, losing and regaining Life Points, and mind merging with their monsters. Three archetypes against one. It was almost like a special summoning galore… Almost… Eventually, the duel ended up getting a bit boring because of how long it's been going and no victor has been decided; fortunately, this stalemate revived some lost tension as they stood looking exhausted with 100 LP each.
Declan let out a frustrated sigh. "New rule," he spoke into the microphone. "If a duel goes on for too long, whoever has the most life points after four turns is the winner."
This was a problem; the two neither had more nor less Life Points than each other. How are they going to declare the winner if they are tied? Worse, the two were already exhausted and their strongest cards were in the Graveyard.
"Yikes," Yuya said. "How are we supposed to-" His eyes widened upon seeing his cousin. "Yuto?"
Suddenly, much to everyone's shock, Yuto collapsed out of exhaustion. Because the Invasion made him slightly buffer than his counterparts, he had been recently working out at the Obsidian family gym, resulting in him getting exhausted easily; he also rarely took part in Action Duels, and seeing this one was his longest one yet, it wore him out immensely.
"Yuto!" Yuya exclaimed. He ran over to his cousin and kneeled next to him, holding the back of his head. "Speak to me!"
Yuto weakly opened his eyes and smiled. "I see her," he quietly said. "I see my mom." He took out Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon. "I leave Dark Rebellion in your care, Yuya."
"What?!" Yuya asked.
"Take care of him," Yuto said. "And remember to use your power...to keep the world entertained...and smiling."
Yuya panicked a bit. "But Zarc's no longer a problem!" he pointed out. "You can't-"
Just then, the sound of an amused laugh came out from Yuto; as it turned out, he was joking this whole time. Yuya looked offended, but he couldn't help but smile as well. "You sneak!" he exclaimed.
Yuto got back up, still laughing softly. "Gotcha," he said.
Yuya stood up. "Okay, you got me," he said. He playfully punched his cousin on the shoulder. "But that was a pretty good show we performed."
"It was," Yuto agreed. He held both of Yuya's hands. "Love you, cuz."
Yuya smiled even more. "Love you too, Yoot," he said.
All around the Center Duel Field, a collective sound of "Aww" was heard from the audience, who were touched by the cousins' fluffy moment. The two may have formed a bond during the Interdimensional War, but the revelations of their moms being sisters helped bring them closer.
"I hate to interrupt this moment, but I must declare a winner," Nico said. "So because Yuto Osaku was the first one to pass out, the winner of the final duel goes to Yuya Sakaki! Team Smiles is moving on to the final round!"
As the audience cheered and applauded after hearing the results, Yuya, Zuzu, and Gong's faces showed how genuinely content they were with advancing onto the tournament. The members of Team Noble, on the other hand, were all proud at how far their companions have gotten through, including themselves.
"Yuya, we did it!" Zuzu exclaimed. As Yuto released his grip on the tomato-haired teen, she ran over to him and hugged him tightly.
As Gong walked over to his teammates, Shay and Lulu approached Yuto. "It's alright," the heiress said. "We tried our best."
"Speak for yourself," Shay said. "I spent last night practicing for dealing with Fusion monsters and I happened to get stuck dueling the only non-Fusion Duelist on Team Smiles."
It was true; he was in the family dueling room last practicing his skills against simulations of Fusion Duelists because he was hoping he would go up against Team Obelisk, most particularly his rival Sora. Because of the arrangement of duels for the semifinals, he got stuck with Gong, his Superheavy Samurais, and his Synchro Summoning technique. The powerful effects and high DEF of his all-monster deck did a number on Shay, helping Team Smiles in moving on with a 2-to-1 score.
"Alright Team Turbo and Team Obelisk," Aichi announced. "It's your turn to duel. Good luck to both of you."
With the dividers already lowered back into the floor, Teams Smiles and Noble exited the arena to watch from the sidelines during the second round. Team Obelisk got up and walked away from where they were sitting to make their way towards the arena's center. At the same time, Team Turbo—albeit their stand-in Shinji—grabbed their Duel Runners from behind them and followed Yuri, Dennis, and Sora to begin the next set of simultaneous duels.
