Here are our NFL picks for Super Bowl 54

Super Bowl 54 is a clash of contrasting styles and the SB Nation expert panel can’t agree on which team will win.

The grand finale to this NFL season will be the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers meeting in Super Bowl 54.

Patrick Mahomes vs. Jimmy Garoppolo. Andy Reid vs. Kyle Shanahan. Red-and-white team vs. red-and-white team.

On paper, it has all the makings of a tremendous game. Both squads ranked in the top 10 in both points scored and points allowed this season. In the postseason, Kansas City’s explosive offense scored 86 points in the team’s two wins. Meanwhile, San Francisco’s relentless defense racked up nine sacks in its two postseason appearances.

The matchup is more nuanced than an unstoppable force meeting an immovable object, though.

For one, the 49ers’ offense is no joke. It finished 2019 second in scoring, behind only the Ravens. It steamrolled the Vikings and Packers in the postseason with 471 rushing yards in the pair of wins.

The Kansas City defense isn’t as strong, but stepped up in the latter half of the season and into the playoffs. It’s also opportunistic and came up with the fifth-most interceptions during the regular season. In the postseason, it held both the Texans and Titans under 100 rushing yards and recorded eight sacks.

Oddsmakers have the Chiefs as a slight favorite in what they expect to be a shootout. It’s a tough game to call, and that’s why it’s no surprise our panel of experts is split right down the middle.

The 49ers are power football defined

Garoppolo threw just 27 passes in the 49ers’ wins over the Vikings and Packers. The offensive gameplan in both games was to bully both teams with a powerful rushing attack.

Running back Tevin Coleman led the way against Minnesota with 105 rushing yards and two touchdowns. When Coleman suffered a shoulder injury against Green Bay, Raheem Mostert took the reins and ran for 220 yards and four touchdowns — the second-best rushing performance in NFL playoff history.

The 49ers are less concerned with balance as they are bludgeoning opponents and dominating both time of possession and field position. And that style of offense perfectly complements a defense that’s as nasty as they come.

While injuries took their toll on the San Francisco defense late in the 2019 season, important contributors like Dee Ford, Richard Sherman, and Kwon Alexander got healthy in time for the playoffs. Now the unit is back to shutting opponents down with a defensive line that features five first-round picks.

That formula of running the ball and suffocating opposing offenses made the 49ers difficult to beat in the regular season. It’s also why five of our experts — James Brady, Sarah Hardy, Stephen White, Kyle Posey, and David Fucillo — are taking the 49ers.

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City offense can pour it on

Houston jumped out to a 24-0 lead against the Chiefs in the Divisional Round, but it didn’t matter. Kansas City’s offense starting cooking in the second quarter and didn’t stop. It dumped 51 points on the Texans in a 20-point victory, with Mahomes throwing five touchdowns during the onslaught.

The Titans led 17-7 in the AFC Championship, but that wasn’t enough either. The Chiefs buried them with four consecutive touchdowns to secure a spot in their first Super Bowl in 50 years.

Stopping the Kansas City offense is problem one, two, and three for the 49ers.

While Mahomes didn’t have the same output this year as he had during his MVP season in 2018 — largely due to a knee injury suffered in October — he’s been highly prolific again as of late. Mahomes threw for 615 yards, eight touchdowns, and no interceptions in the Chiefs’ two playoff wins.

It helps too that he has a bevy of weapons around him, including Tyreek Hill, Travis Kelce, and Sammy Watkins.

The Chiefs’ defense struggled badly at times during the 2019 season. But when Mahomes and the offense are at their best, the defense just doesn’t have to do much. At the very least, its most recent game against Tennessee proved Kansas City is capable of pulling out a strong defensive showing.

The Chiefs’ propensity for big plays on offense is probably the main reason why five on the panel — Christian D’Andrea, Morgan Moriarty, Geoff Schwartz, Maverick and Stanley the Good Dogs (who share a vote), and myself (Adam Stites) — are picking the Chiefs to win.

Maverick and Stanley are friends of Pete Sweeney, the manager at our Chiefs site, Arrowhead Pride. They teamed up to make our guest dog pick, and it should be no surprise which side they’re going with:

Stanley, 1 year old, is on the left and Maverick, 5, is on the right. Maverick is more of an offensive threat with his fetching skills but has slowed down recently due to injuries. Stanley’s tenacity and ballhawking skills are akin to the Honey Badger. They say, “living in Denver is ruff being beyond enemy territory, but we don’t give a sniff about it. Go Chiefs!”

Kirby Review - What Should Your First Kirby Game Be?

It’s no secret that I am a die-hard fan of the Kirby series. One of the items on my bucket list is to play every single Kirby game to its completion. I really wish more people would get into the series, especially those who haven’t played video games before. If someone were to come up to me and say they were interested in Nintendo, I would recommend either Mario or Kirby as their first experience, as they are relatively simple to understand, feature a basic story with basic controls, and are just a bunch of fun.

So, you may be thinking, “Hey, I want to play a Kirby game!” Maybe you’ve seen the hype around Planet Robobot, or you found out about Kirby’s 25th anniversary happening this year. Either way, it may be a bit hard to choose a game to start with. Which one is the best Kirby game to start your journey into Dreamland?

Well, that’s just it. Any Kirby game will make a fine introduction to the series. Kirby games are meant to be introductory and simple, with no major overarching story to find yourself in the middle of or a list of characters you need to learn about. If you told me Kirby Mass Attack was your first Kirby game, I’d say that was fine. If you told me Kirby’s Pinball Land was your first experience with the little puff, that’s fine too. Honestly, you could put every Kirby game on a cork board, throw a dart, and you’d have picked a fine game.

That being said, there are some games that are better to start off with, and games I think are more satisfying to experience after you’ve been introduced to the series. Therefore, I will be making a list of the best Kirby games for you to start your experience, whether you have a Wii/Wii U or 3DS, or both. This is because of the vast virtual library both systems offer. Overall, I think the home console library is slightly better, but you won’t be missing out on the Kirby franchise if you only have the portable unit.

I’m going to try my best and not recommend these games based on my personal preference, but instead their simplicity, controls, music, themes, characters, and other elements that make it the best game to start the series, including how well it meets the standards for what we expect in modern Kirby. Keep in mind that I am counting remakes on my list, but not any games that Kirby is a cameo in (i.e. Super Smash Bros, NES Remix)

To begin, I’m going to list a bunch of Kirby games where I can’t find a reason to recommend them as being your first game. Again, it isn’t bad if this is the only Kirby game you have access to, and these aren’t automatically bad games by any stretch, but these games are either too different from the standard or are otherwise too difficult or near-impossible to obtain:

Kirby Pinball Land - the only pinball game in the series, it won’t give you an idea of how Kirby plays as a platformer.

Kirby Dream Course - unless you want the Grump experience, this game also strays away from the platforming norm, but definitely pick it up if that’s the game you’re specifically looking for, because there isn’t another one like it.

Kirby's Avalanche - a puzzle game, once again straying too far away from the norm. Pick it up if you want to see Kirby throw shade.

Kirby Star Stacker - puzzle game, see above

Kirby's Block Ball - another puzzle game, same reasons as pinball land.

Kirby’s Tilt ‘n’ Tumble - a great game, but the only way to access it is if you own a working Game Boy Colour and the original cartridge in working condition. If you have it, more power to you, but don’t break a sweat trying to find it.

Kirby’s Toy Box - Japan Exclusive

Kirby’s Super Star Stacker - Japan Exclusive

Kirby’s Air Ride - Now, before any hardcore Kirby fans dislike this decision, remember that this video is made for Kirby beginners. And while Air Ride may be a fantastic and addictive game, it doesn’t follow two of my crucial elements: one, it is not a traditional platformer, and two, it is not easily accessible - unless you own a GameCube, there is no easy (and legal) way to get this game. If this does get released on VC, though, I may add it to the list.

ALL Kirby Mini Game Expansions (e.g. Kirby Fighters Deluxe, Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, etc.) - I would only recommend these games AFTER you’ve played the games they come from.

Now if you are looking for a Kirby puzzle game ONLY, then by all means you can stop right here and pick out a game, but I’m assuming you’re here for the really good stuff. The stuff that makes Kirby shine - the copy abilities. I consider any Kirby game to be a great starting game for those interested in the series if it meets this criteria:

A platforming game that showcases Kirby’s ability to transform, either through traditional copy abilities or other means related to his surroundings, situations, or enemies.

This is why I’ve included games that are debatably spin-offs - Kirby’s Epic Yarn doesn’t feature Kirby’s signature inhale move, but it is still a platformer that showcases Kirby’s ability to change and adapt based on his new body. The only slight exception to this rule in Kirby’s Dreamland, but I’m giving it a pass since it is the first in the series, long before anything had been established. Instead of listing off the pros and cons to each Kirby game, I’m going to instead give a list of which games you should play based on your needs or desires, for each type of console. After that, I may give explanations as to why I couldn’t recommend a few of the games (but for the most part it’ll just come down to one being better than another). Finally, I’ll state what is the overall best Kirby game to play. Just to make sure we’re on the same page, here is the list of Kirby games that I will be referencing, giving us a grand total of 18 games to choose from:

Number One - “I need a cheap Kirby game!”

These two games are an excellent start into the series for a very low cost. Kirby’s Dreamland is 3.99US, and Kirby’s NiD is $6.99. While I wouldn’t consider these the best of the series, they are a good, cheap way to begin your adventure through Kirby’s history. Just keep in mind that if the controls are your only concern, in my opinion, they become MUCH better in the later games.

Number Two - “I want to learn about the history behind Kirby. Give me the full immersive experience!”

Wii U: Kirby’s Dream Collection

3DS: Kirby Super Star Ultra

No questions asked, The Dream Collection is the best way to get Kirby’s history. Featuring Kirby’s first six “main titles”, a history timeline, extra challenge minigames, and episodes from the anime, this is the game with the most immersive Kirby experience out there.

But, if you don’t have a Wii, then Super Star Ultra is a good way to go. It features a remake of the first Kirby game in the form of “Spring Breeze”, has more than 8 games to choose from, shows off a huge array of Kirby characters over the years, and is just plain fun.

Number Three - “I’ve played a few games in the series, now I’m looking for something a little different.”

Wii U: Kirby and the Amazing Mirror VC

3DS: Kirby Canvas Curse AND/OR Kirby Mass Attack

Kirby and the Amazing Mirror is a much more open map system, but still has Kirby keep his traditional abilities (i.e. the layout is different, but the controls and principles are the same). While it’s not world-changing, it is something different if you’re getting tired of the standard formula.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse and Kirby Canvas Curse fall in the same boat. Both focus on line-travelling platforming, maintain (to some extent) Kirby’s ability to transform, and are a lot of fun. In terms of aesthetics, I prefer Rainbow Curse, but in terms of gameplay/control, Canvas Curse wins for me. Both, however, are a lot of fun and a bit different from the norm.

Kirby Mass Attack, I’ll be perfectly honest, is one of the few Kirby games I couldn’t really get into. The controls were just a bit too different from me. However, on its own merits, it is a fine Kirby game that tries out a new formula of gameplay, and succeeds. Some like it, others don’t, but there is nothing broken/technically wrong with the game and is a worthy candidate for this category.

(Side note: The puzzle games would also be good candidates for this section.)

Number Four - “I have literally never played a video game in my entire life dear God help me”

Wii U: Kirby’s Epic Yarn

3DS: Kirby’s Squeak Squad

Both of the games I have listed are fairly easy, have simple story lines, and fun but doable platforming. Kirby’s Squeak Squad is just plain easy, whereas in Kirby’s Epic Yarn, it presents more of a challenge in terms of platforming, but you can’t die. Both are also fairly easy to get 100% in, and don’t have too many extra modes to overwhelm you.

Number Five - “I want to play Kirby Planet Robobot!”

Wii U: Kirby’s Return to Dream Land

3DS: Kirby Super Star Ultra AND/OR Kirby’s Triple Deluxe

Odd suggestion - maybe don’t?

Now if all you want to do is play with Kirby in a mech, then, well, only Planet Robobot is going to do that for you. However, if you are interested in Kirby as a whole and are just super interested in Planet Robobot, I would recommend playing either Kirby’s Return to Dreamland for Wii OR Kirby Super Star Ultra and Kirby Triple Deluxe for 3DS. Trust me, it will make you appreciate the grandeur that is Planet Robobot. When the series was essentially rebooted in Kirby’s Return to Dreamland, there was a lot of experimentation with Kirby’s abilities and what he was capable of. Errors that were made in Triple Deluxe are solved perfectly in Planet Robobot (one being the collectable system), and Kirby Super Star Ultra contains some elements that are found in Planet Robobot. Again, if you want to start with Planet Robobot, by all means do so, it’s a fantastic game! But if you want to love it even more, consider playing the other titles I’ve suggested.

Number Six - “What’s the overall best Kirby game?”

This is debatable - most Kirby games are considered at least “Good” by most fans, but choosing the best is a completely different ball game. Personally though, (barring the Dream Collection due to its unfair advantage) I’d say Kirby Planet Robobot for 3DS and Kirby’s Return to Dreamland for Wii are the best the series has to offer - Return to Dreamland because of Kirby’s long awaited return to his roots after over 10 years without a traditional platformer on a home console, and Planet Robobot because it finally perfected the system that Return to Dreamland sought to create.

So, there you have it. Depending on your needs, these are the best Kirby games to start your adventure into the series. Have fun exploring the series - there’s a lot to enjoy! :) Now get out there and have fun!

Kirby Clash Team Unite! Chapter ☆9: The Ultimate Mark

Silence filled the Empyrean. Team Kirby, completely exhausted, couldn’t even speak. The cloudy ground under their feet gradually started to grow brighter.

“Woah… Look…”

That soft voice came from Beam, finally breaking the silence.

The clouds, which had previously been dyed a dark color, changed to a nice madder color. The ominous light disappeared, and the warm sunlight returned. The buildings that had so suddenly fallen to ruin returned to being beautiful in the blink of an eye. And then, basking in the nice light, the Kirbies’ quickly regained their energy.

“Wowie…”

“We did it, we won!” The Kirbies cheered, then hugged each other in joy.

“And it was all thanks to the Team Meteor.”

“The power of our friendship!”

“But it's not just that. It was also of everyone in the Dream Kingdom giving us the courage!”

“Yeah. Speaking of, we should probably go back to the village ASAP and tell everyone the good news!”

Suddenly, a certain figure approached the joyful Kirbies.

The one who had previously been vanquished by King D-Mind, Dark Taranza.

The Kirbies put themselves on-guard. However, Dark Taranza seemed to have lost the will to fight. That one attack seemed to have affected him quite a lot. His face seemed to lack energy as he staggered.

“The… The mirror… My precious… mirror…” Dark Taranza mumbled with a hollow voice. He didn’t even seem to notice that Team Kirby was there, right in front of him. His gaze was entirely captured by the twisted mirror.

“If I have… even… this… I could… I could see… Sectonia… again…”

Dark Taranza reached his hand out for the mirror.

“STOP!”

Doctor swiftly stood before Dark Taranza.

“It’s not over yet. This guy’s been the cause of all the pain and suffering people have endured! We’ve gotta destroy him!”

“On it!”

Hammer readied his Platinum Lord Hammer.

Right away, Kirby shouted:

“WAIT!”

“Huh? What is it, Sword?”

“This guy isn’t the real Taranza.”

Hearing Dark Taranza’s muttering, Kirby had realized.

Why would Taranza have gotten stuck in a mirror and had his heart corrupted with evil?

All of this had been for the queen he had once served, the queen of a country in the sky, Sectonia.

It was all to see Queen Sectonia once again.

Kirby remembered a time in the past, to the mirror he found deep within the Mirror Labyrinth. It was a terrifying mirror that materialized reflections of the evil found within the hearts of those reflected in it.

Kirby didn’t know in what ways the mirror here was similar to that. However, it seemed to function nearly identically.

It seemed that both Taranza and King Dedede had been reflected in this mirror and, as a result, it created their evil “other selves.”

If that was indeed true, Kirby couldn’t just leave things like this.

“Let’s destroy the mirror and save Taranza!” Kirby shouted, holding his sword up high. Doctor looked at Kirby, pondering this.

“The cause of all the bad things that’ve been happening is the mirror, not Taranza…? Surely in some way, this mirror has quite the eerie sign.”

“Be careful. Don’t let the mirror reflect you!”

...Got it.”

The whole team nodded their heads and each readied their weapons.

Dark Taranza, realizing what Team Kirby was about to do, screamed.

“Stop! Don’t destroy it! That mirror is the property of Queen Sectonia!!”

Without a word, Team Kirby turned to face the mirror.

The four weapons all attacked the mirror at the same time.

The twisted mirror was smashed into pieces.

“OH… OH... NOOOOOO!!!!”

Dark Taranza shrieked, then stopped moving.

Right as he watched this, his body lost its energy, and he was reduced to a virtual image without consciousness.

Countless cracks appeared all over his body.

Right before the Kirbies, staring at him with bated breath, Dark Taranza, just like the mirror, shattered into pieces and disappeared.

“Wha… What just happened?...”

Hammer rubbed his eyes over and over, seeming unable to believe what he had just seen.

“It’s just as Sword had said,” Doctor said, “it seems that guy was nothing more than an image created by the mirror. So, when we destroyed the mirror, he shattered along with it.”

“Look!” Beam shouted, noticing something.

The spot where Dark Taranza was eliminated was sparkling brightly.

Within the light, someone was lying down on the clouds.

“Huh? Is it Dark Taranza again?...”

“No, it’s not. That’s the real Taranza!”

Kirby rushed over.

Due to the extermination of the evil Dark Taranza, he had been rescued.

With beautiful silver hair, and brightly colored horns, the real Taranza.

Taranza slowly got up, then looked at the Kirbies with a half-conscious face.

“Wh… what?... Where…?”

“It’s ok. We saved you!”

Team Kirby surrounded Taranza with relief.

“The mirror…?” Taranza muttered with a hollow voice.

“We destroyed it. It’s gone now.:”

“...oh…”

Taranza hung his head.

“I mean, duh, it really messed you up there!” Hammer said jokingly, not reading the room. “You better treat us to some ice cream as an apology, ya dingus!”

Taranza kept his eyes cast down without answering.

Panicked, Hammer continued:

“H-Hey, I’m kidding, I’m kidding! It wasn’t your fault, it was the mirror’s, right? C-C’mon, let's put all of that behind us!”

Taranza didn’t say anything.

Kirby didn’t know what to say.

“...c’mon, let's go back to the village,” Doctor said, “everyone’s waiting for us.”

Beam nodded, and looked Taranza in the eyes.

“You, come with us too. C’mon, cheer up a little, go grab something to eat at Chef Kawasaki’s tavern!”

The Kirbies started to walk. Kirby looked back, then up at Taranza, and then finally slowly started to walk.

“And? And then what happened?” Chef Kawasaki asked, leaning over the counter.

The tavern was overcrowded. The number of guests unable to fit inside practically overflowed outside the building.

Of course, everyone had gathered to hear what Team Kirby had to say.

“And then I was like, ‘if you’re still standing even after a blow from my mighty hammer, I’ll toast in honor of your accomplishment. To the eyeball monster jerk!”

“Oh, quit exaggerating. You never said anything that cool.”

“W-Well, I said it in my head!!”

Making a fuss, lots of noise.

The gathered villagers all had cheerful smiling faces.

Thanks to Team Kirby’s exploits, the evil had finally been defeated, and peace returned to the Dream Kingdom.

“And then happened to that Taranza guy?”

“We boarded the balloon together and came back here. We were all together when we passed through the village gate, but I think we lost him after that.”

“Where is he now? Why is he never seen around anyone?” Knuckle Joe asked, seeming disappointed.

“Well, he’s probably just embarrassed,” answered Beam, “after all the trouble he’s caused everyone, I can see why.”

“I hope he’ll stop being so shy and apologize. If he does that, he could make friends with everyone.”

“He’ll come around eventually.”

Then, a new guest entered, pushing through the crowd at the entrance.

It was Magolor.

“Welcome back, Team Kirby! I’ve heard you’ve taken down quite the formidable foe. I knew you guys could do it!”

“Thanks, Magolor. Couldn’t’ve done it without the Platinum Set we bought from you!”

“That’s great!... or at least that’s what I’d like to say, but…”

Suddenly, Magolor took on a more serious face.

“Why did you guys have to bring over such a troublesome guest?”

“Huh? Who are you talking about?”

“That weird dude with horns on his head and six hands!”

“...are you talking about Taranza?”

“He just went and sat on top of the roof of my establishment and now he just refuses to get up and leave! Thinks he owns the place or something. I told him to get down, but he wouldn’t listen!”

“What??”

Surprised, the Kirbies went outside the building.

It was just as Magolor had said.

Taranza was sitting on the roof of the Shoppe, watching the sky.

“Hey, Taranza!”

“What’re you doing up there?”

“Please come down. Let’s go have dinner at the tavern!”

Everyone shouted and shouted, but Taranza didn’t respond to anything.

Kirby looked up at him and thought about it.

Queen Sectonia’s castle was located far above the clouds.

“I bet Taranza wants to get back to her castle.”

To the castle he called home, where he had lived with the beautiful Sectonia.

“We should just leave him be,” Kirby told everyone, “he’ll come down when he gets hungry.”

While watching Taranza, he had remembered:

Kirby had a place he wanted to return to.

He had to hurry over to where Susie had been spotted, in the northern plains.

“...I’ve gotta say goodbye to everyone,” Kirby muttered.

“Sword-” Beam started before correcting himself, “No, the battle’s over now, so you don’t need your gear anymore, do you? Guess you’re not Sword anymore. We should probably call you ‘Pink’ now.”

“Yeah, guess so. But my name isn’t Pink. I’m just Kirby.”

Beam smiled sweetly, as did Doctor and Hammer.

“Guess you’re right. I’m not Beam anymore, guess I'll just go back to being Kirby too.”

“Same here. I’m not Doctor, I’m Kirby.”

“Yeah, guess ‘Hammer’ is no more now. From this day on, I’m Kirby again.”

The four made a circle and grabbed each other’s hands tightly.

“Everyone, listen up,” Doctor- or the Blue Kirby previously known as “Doctor” before he went back to just being called “Kirby” said, “there’s one thought on my mind right now.”

“What is it, Doc- I mean Kirby?”

“Even if we split up, our hearts are still one. Team Kirby’s never really gonna end.”

The Kirbies all nodded their heads.

“Yeah, duh!”

“We’re all friends.”

“So what’re we gonna do like this?”

Blue Kirby picked up the branch of a tree that had fallen nearby and wrote some words into the ground:

TEAM KIRBY Z

The other Kirbies were bewildered.

Right after the name they were all familiar with, an extra letter had been added at the end…

“...Uh, what’s that for?”

“Team Kirby… Z?”

“Well, I mean…”

Blue Kirby, seeming shy, drew circles in the dirt with the tree branch as he explained.

“Well, Z is the last letter of the alphabet. It’s the ultimate mark that this is the end. I think it’ll also serve to show that our friendship will never, ever, ever disappear.

“Team Kirby… Z…” the Kirbies muttered together.

At the front of the group, Pink Kirby said:

“I like it! I like it a lot!”

“Yeah, it’s a good name.”

“Alright then, you know the drill.”

The Kirbies all lined up in a row and cheerfully raised their hands.

“I’m Kirby!”

“Together, we’re four…”

They pointed to the blue sky and shouted as loudly as they could:

“AND TOGETHER, WE’RE TEAM KIRBY Z!!!”

Bandana Waddle Dee was standing at the village gate.

“Oh, hey there, Kirby!”

Bandana Waddle Dee, as always, called out to him with a smiling face.

“Lemme guess, you were waiting here ‘cause you thought I was gonna leave soon?”

“Heh, right on the mark!”

The two held hands.

“I’m really gonna miss you, but I’ll be fine,” Bandana Waddle Dee said, “just… take a couple seconds to remember me every once in a while, y’know?”

“Waddle Dee…”

“It was nice to meet you, Kirby, I mean it. It was a lot of fun while it lasted!”

Bandana Waddle Dee only cried for a moment, then hurriedly switched back to his happy look.

“I’ve decided not to cry. Safe travels!”

“...thank you.”

Kirby hugged Bandana Waddle Dee closely.

Bandana Waddle Dee reciprocated, hugging Kirby with all his strength.

“Bye.”

“Take care out there, Kirby!”

Bandana Waddle Dee happily waved.

Kirby passed through the gate and walked toward the Grasslands.

Each and every time he looked back, Bandana Waddle Dee was still there, happily waving at him.

Once he got to the point where he was too far away to be seen, Kirby suddenly came to a realization:

The only person to have called him “Kirby” instead of “Sword” or “Pink Kirby” from the very beginning… was Bandana Waddle Dee.

Kirby headed north right away.

The only clues he had were from the things he heard Magolor say. If he were to jump into the rift Susie had appeared from, maybe, just maybe, he could return to Dream Land.

However, the information wasn’t exactly the most reliable.

He didn’t know for sure where the hole was, just that it was in the “plains up north.”

He didn’t even know whether or not the hole was still open.

There was no guarantee that the hole would even lead to Dream Land.

However, Kirby did not give up hope.

As long as he had even the slightest bit of hope, he would only continue walking.

To drive away his worry, he monologued to himself as he walked.

“Is this just another version of Susie that turned evil due to looking in the mirror too? Is the real Susie ok?”

The wind blowing through the Grasslands was warm.

It was just like the kind of wind that would blow through the meadows of Dream Land.

“Did the same thing happen to Landia too? Was that just some mirror doppelganger of him? We destroyed the mirror, so Landia should be back to normal…”

Then, the sound of flapping could be heard.

The sound of large wings flapping.

Kirby looked up at the sky.

The four-headed Guardian Angel of the Empyrean himself, Landia, was calmly flying.

“Hey there, Landia!” Kirby shouted as loudly as he could, waving his hand. “You ok? Are you back to normal?”

Landia slowly circled around, then flew down before Kirby. Landia was big enough that Kirby was somewhat intimidated, but he had peaceful looks on his faces.

Much different from when he had swooped down on and attacked Team Kirby without an explanation.

Landia rested his wings, and moved his four heads sulkingly.

“Huh? What’s wrong?”

Kirby looked puzzled. Landia, again, shook his head(s) sulkingly.

“You wanna do... Ummmm… What?”

He didn’t know what Landia wanted to convey.

At a loss, one of the heads opened its mouth wide and caught Kirby with it.

“What?! Stop it, I’m not your lunch!”

Kirby panickedly tried to free himself, but, of course, Landia had not mistaken Kirby for a delicious snack. Instead, Landia tossed Kirby up and onto his large back.

“Wh-Wh-What?! Oh… Wait a second, did you just wanna give me a ride?”

Kirby, having finally figured out what Landia was thinking, held onto Landia’s body as tightly as he could manage.

Landia, with Kirby aboard, spread his wings and took off for the skies.

Toward the north, toward the north.

Landia flew at an amazing speed.

Kirby held on with all his might to make sure he wouldn’t fall off.

Looking down, he saw the Grasslands and rivers, so small they looked like models. Bustling towns and peaceful villages scattered here and there. When peace had been threatened, basically no one traveled around, and the roads were all deserted.

From this point forward, it seemed that everyone would have enough peace of mind to travel again.

Towns and villages would regain their liveliness, the Dream Kingdom would gradually flourish.

“Bye-Bye… Goodbye, Dream Kingdom!”

Kirby had been full of worry about whether or not he would be able to go home until just a short while ago, but he no longer had any doubts.

He had the Guardian Angel Landia on his side, after all.

Surely he would be home in no time.

Before long, the west skies were dyed an orange color, as if on fire.

Landia flew lower and lower, eventually landing in a vast plain.

On the ground there was a thin layer of ice. Black coniferous trees could be seen up ahead.

“This… must be the northern plains where Susie was spotted…”

Behind Kirby, Landia flapped his wings and took off toward the darkened sky.

“Oh… Thank you, Landia!”

Kirby waved. Landia made a sound that seemed to be his way of bidding farewell.

Kirby mustered up as much courage as he could and started walking.

After a few tens of steps toward the forest, Kirby finally found it.

The sky seemed to have been unnaturally cut open, split in the shape of a star.

Connecting different dimensions, the Extra-Dimensional Road!

“Woohoo! Dream Land, here I come!!!” Kirby cheered as he started to run, about to jump into the star-shaped hole in space.

However, a large figure stood before it.

“Please wait!”

A muffled voice echoed.

Blocking Kirby’s path was a robot so big, Kirby had to look up at it.

Kirby recognized that beautiful silhouette.

The robotic armor developed by the Haltmann Works Company was the Business Suit.

However, it had a lot of subtle differences from the Business Suit Kirby was familiar with. The Business Suit Susie rode in was a lovely pink color. However, this Business Suit, while it had a similar shape, was a dark color. It was a black color that blended in with the night sky.

The otherworldly invader looked down at Kirby from the mech’s cockpit and continued with a cold voice.

“I believe this is the first time I’ve seen you. Allow me to introduce myself. My name is-”

“Susie!” Kirby shouted.

The Susie look-alike went silent. Then soon, she seemed to pull herself together and continued.

“It is an honor to see that you know my name. However, to be precise...”

The mysterious robot suddenly fired missiles.

Kirby panickedly jumped out of the way.

“I would prefer if you would call me Parallel Susie!”

“Parallel…?”

Kirby thought about this while running around, trying to escape.

Of course, this, too, had to have been an evil Susie created by the twisted Mirror, just like Dark Taranza and King D-Mind, right?

However, the mirror should've been destroyed by now…

“What a pesky little native, refusing to stay still for even a second...”

Parallel Susie approached Kirby with light jumps.

“Please, wait, Susie! I don’t wanna fight you! C’mon, look, you see that hole over there? I-”

“Arguing is but a futile effort!”

Parallel Susie jumped up high and attempted to squash Kirby. However, Kirby managed to escape by rolling out of the way on the cold ground.

Susie- No, Parallel Susie was serious. She was trying to crush Kirby, without any trouble.

Right now, Kirby had no weapons or armor, no teammates, and, of course, no Team Meteor to save him.

Landia had already flown away.

It seemed that, the way things were, Kirby had no chance of winning.

Kirby frantically tried to escape. If only he could somehow break off from Parallel Susie and jump into the star-shaped hole…

However, Parallel Susie jumped up high and blocked Kirby’s escape.

Once again, she fired her missiles.

“AHHHHH!!”

Kirby was sent flying by the explosion and thrown violently to the ground.

The black Business Suit, leaning over Kirby, about to crush him, was reflected in his widened eyes.

“Prepare to be exterminated!” Parallel Susie exclaimed in a triumphant voice, about to unleash her most powerful attack.

...and then, the star-shaped rift started to shrink.

As if it were being pulled shut by a strong power from the other side of the rift.

Tears in time and space created by the magical powers of the twisted mirror took on many different forms.

The Extra-Dimensional Road was one of them.

Now that the mirror was destroyed, the distortions it caused in various places were about to be corrected.

The rift that connected to the Extra-Dimensional Road was about to disappear.

The Business Suit Susie was riding in was thrown off balance. The gravitational pull from within the rift caused her to lose control of the mech.

The Business Suit, which should’ve been immensely heavy, floated in the air like a balloon.

“Hey… what are you doing!? Stop it this instant… I said stop it this instant!” Parallel Susie shrieked, making a fuss, but she was unable to defy this power.

“NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!”

Only her screams remained as Parallel Susie and her Business Suit were sucked into the hole to the Extra-Dimensional Road.

Kirby looked up at the hole in mute amazement before quickly coming to his senses.

“Wait! I’m coming too!”

Kirby jumped up and was about to continue after Parallel Susie.

However… he was just a moment too late.

As soon as it had sucked up Parallel Susie, the dimensional rift had closed.

It was as if nothing had ever happened. Kirby was left there on the cold ground.

“W… Wait… Wait…” Kirby said in a crying voice.

He just lost his one ticket out of there, his one way back home.

Kirby was left there alone on the frozen ground.

Kirby looked up toward the sky and screamed:

“WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!”

A Year of Rain: 1+1=Chaos

The pillars and challenges of implementing cooperative gameplay into your design.

When was the last time that you witnessed people yelling at each other in public? How did it make you feel? When was the last time you behaved out of the ordinary?

Those were the questions I asked myself while sitting in our break room watching my colleagues play a furious match in a 2v2 battle of Rocket League. The score was even, the mood tense, the banter on the rise. After the match went into overtime, one team inevitably emerged victorious and celebrated with cheers and high fives. Through the magic of play, yelling out loud in ecstasy or anger is, to a certain degree, socially acceptable. But how does it change the emotional impact a game has on players? How much sweeter are victories if celebrated with friends and how less painful are defeats?

When we allow ourselves to enter a state of play, we can observe that raw emotions, provoked by game states and human interactions, quickly surface. These emotions then get drawn in and reflected by everyone around us and create a unique experience that humans have enjoyed since their very beginning. While it is hard to quantify how reflected emotions impact the emotional state of players, it is evident that it does. Playing games together always held the potential power to establish or transform social bonds while being entertaining.

A study by Quantic Foundry (n=1266) in June 2016 did show that cooperative gameplay, locally and online, outranks the enjoyment versus competitive play by more than double the amount. Additionally, while competitive play shows a higher grade of entertainment with male audiences, cooperative play is loved by male and female players alike.

When playing with strangers, Quantic found that the appeal of co-op gameplay dropped sharply. Male players found more enjoyment in engaging strangers in a competitive game mode instead of teaming up.

Finally, the study reveals that older players are less affected by enjoyment depreciation. This would suggest that, with an aging community of gamers, co-op should be continuously on the rise.

So what is the takeaway? What can we learn? In comparison to competitive play, co-op seems to be more enjoyable to more people and ages. In short: Playing games can be a lot of fun, but playing games with friends has the potential to provide an even better experience. So why don’t we just make some more multiplayer games that focus on co-op then? Well, as it turns out, it is not all that easy. While making games itself is hard, many developers suggest that adding multiplayer to a game comes with a hefty price tag of development time and cost that is often hard to calculate. That aside, co-op on its own does raise a lot of design questions bringing even more issues to the table that we have to consider.

While a common goal is important, many more topics have to be carefully designed in order to form a good co-op experience.

The Pillars When I started working on our real-time strategy game A Year Of Rain, I tried to define pillars of co-op gameplay. Going forward, I will try to highlight what I think are the most valuable points we have to take care of in order to create a memorable cooperative experience:

After deciding that you would like to include co-op aspects in your project, you have to face a bunch of questions that define the multiplayer experience of your game. First off, which systems can you provide players with to allow cooperative gameplay and what kind of challenges will emerge out of those systems? Games like Overcooked will ask players to satisfy the culinary needs of virtual customers, while the game Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes tasks players to defuse a bomb. In order to create a co-op experience, players need a common goal.

Secondly, it might seem obvious, but it is essential that players win or lose together. The outcome of cooperative play has to be the same for all players. This does not imply that a single participant should not be able to stand out, but it is important that, in the end, players get the opportunity to celebrate together. After all, a match of Dead by Daylight is hard to win with all of the four survivors still being alive. The emerging player stories will tell of daring distractions that turned into heroic sacrifices to allow the team to score a shared victory. Players would ignore teamplay if their potential rewards were at risk.

As you want players to work together, your created challenges must base on interdependencies between your players. A World of Warcraft dungeon is rarely done by a single player because usually, a class-based system of an MMORPG does not allow everyone to do everything. However, your game does not need a heavy asymmetric character design in order to work as a co-op title. Symmetry is fine as long as the overarching goal can only be achieved together. In A Way Out, both characters have the same set of skills, and players are constantly tasked to open pathways together by swapping items or moving heavy objects to progress through the game.

Once you are happy with your interdependency design, make sure you add tools for players to communicate with one another. If you are not designing a local co-op game only, you need signaling mechanics. Do not assume that players will use VoIP applications like Teamspeak or Discord. A simple “Follow me!” in Counter-Strike or the interactive ping system of Apex Legends are especially needed in real-time games where decisions have to be made fast.

While players overcome challenges in your game together, feel free to add more social interactions. Those can be short visuals like emotes in Clash Royale or a high five animation in Portal 2. While it may not be necessary to progress through your game, simply playing some music together in a calm moment might evoke powerful emotions and create memories that players keep in the back of their heads for a long time.

To take it a step further, adding gameplay relevant co-op interactions is always a good idea. Picking up downed players in your favourite battle royale or sharing health pickups in Kirby Star Allies are mechanics that double down on team play and the importance of shared resources.

After the boss is defeated, the puzzle is solved, or the match is won; it is equally important to highlight the achievement of the team. A successful party will receive loot to empower their characters and become even stronger. Your team might rank up, or you simply unlock more challenges for you and your friends to overcome. What kind of team-based rewards will you have in store for your players?

The Challenges Now that we talked about the co-op design pillars, let me give you some insight on how we tried to tackle some of them in our current project and what issues we faced. For the sake of simplicity, I will not go deep into the competitive multiplayer part of the game, but rather focus on some of the co-op campaign issues.

Setting up a common goal by itself is not all too hard. Defeat the big bad boss, find the powerful MacGuffin or rescue the poor NPC. Yet, while symmetrical goals do not produce a lot of work, they can become stale fast. Remember when we talked about interdependencies? Creating some asymmetrical objectives that have to be solved by specialized players prior to the final goal helped us to break up the campaign gameplay. In order to design those puzzle elements, we have to assume a certain degree of control over the game state. That includes, for example, spawn points, resources, units, or hero abilities.

In contrast, a co-op mission in Starcraft has to be solvable by all commanders with all ranks. This leaves less room for specific interactions but allows Blizzard to add more Commanders to their in-game shop on a regular basis while mutators keep the available content fresh.

Winning or losing games together might feel pretty straight forward as well, but what would you do if a skill mismatch exists between your players? Let’s assume you design a mission with an asymmetric short term goal where one player has to fend off waves of enemies while the second player has to fight a boss at the other end of the map. Since we wanted to include asymmetric goals, the A Year Of Rain co-op campaign has several instances of player separation. Imagine player one repeatedly fails at his task of defending the base because he simply does not play a lot of strategy games. This would result in a shared lose condition, a degree of public humiliation and might demotivate our players.

The A Year Of Rain team is talking about the most valuable points to create a memorable cooperative experience.Since we always try to solve issues with a minimum design approach, we decided to allow players to change the difficulty setting before each mission. However, this is most likely not the ideal solution, since lowering the difficulty setting and therefore, the challenge might feel bad for skilled players. Developing a fully dynamic difficulty system that matches the skill of both separate players could be a better solution.

Looking at special interdependencies between players, it is important to realize that while you want players to work together, it should never feel forced. Interactions should emerge from your game by design. This is often an issue when gating players through our cooperative mission. To give some context, imagine you designed a mini-boss that you want your players to fight. Ideally, both players reach the boss arena at the same time. You can fire a cutscene and start the fight. In reality, however, this is unlikely, and the gate has to stay closed until both party members are ready and in the right position. Just teleporting all characters into the arena once the first player reaches it feels like getting pulled by the iconic Scorpion spear from Mortal Kombat. In our case, we use mechanics like switches in front of the arena that both players have to activate at the same time in order to initiate the fight. Additionally, we are trying our best to keep players busy by adding story bits or minor tasks while they wait for the second player to arrive.

Another issue that comes with co-op multiplayer gameplay is a potential lack of clarity. Since most of the time, you will be focused on your own character or party, it is unlikely that you constantly keep track of the actions of your fellow players. This issue only grows with the number of players involved. Luckily, we focus on two-player co-op, provide good communication tools, and try to keep mission-relevant information on the UI at all times.

Healing an ally is a simple co-op interaction that feels great for both players.

Lastly, if you put two strangers in a co-op game, they might not be kind to each other. Jerks are a real issue, especially if you have a shared lose condition. Chat filters, surrender votes, and punishments for toxic behaviour are a way to mitigate the issue, but the past has shown that especially in competitive multiplayer environments damage will be done. As Alfred Pennyworth said: “Some men just want to watch the world burn.” In order to create a stress-free alternative, we decided to allow players to enjoy the campaign with an AI player if they so desire.

However… Do not be discouraged. Despite the hardships, creating a cooperative game, and seeing players interact with each other is incredibly rewarding. Watching players formulate a strategy, jump in a game, adapt and overcome challenges, get motivated to play again and try a different approach is worth the struggle.
