This long essay is too far-ranging to provide just a few good quotes. Rabbi Henry Karp of Davenport, Iowa argues that it is indeed appropriate to use Holocaust and Nazi analogies when something in our times is just as bad. He details many parallels between Donald Trump and the Nazi regime, including:
Use of language such as vermin
Calling enemies criminals and sexual predators
Obsession with blood and racial purity
Antisemitism
Accusing Haitians of eating neighbors’ pets, which is today’s Blood Libel
Calling minority groups the enemy within
Arresting, Imprisoning, & Even Executing Political Opponents and Critics
He then outlines the agenda of prejudice that is already in place in Iowa and other red states.
If you don’t have time to read the whole thing, here is his final call to action:
We may take our democracy for granted, but it is a fragile and precious commodity. There will always be those who would gladly replace it with a system in which some have power and the rest serve their need or simply disappear.  It is not a matter of “It can’t happen here” but rather of it must not happen here. The only ones who make the difference, for good or for ill, are those who act and who vote. As Elie Wiesel said, “Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.”
It is time to choose a side. There is no neutral ground.

Hey sixth-light! My local bookshop has just gotten copies of Winters Gifts delivered, and for reasons I can’t quite pin down I quickly went from excited to not particularly excited at all upon reading the blurb.
I was wondering if you have any thoughts about how the novella looked leading up to the release, and if you’re planning to read this one?
I read it a while back and reviewed it on my Dreamwidth. I hadn't paid any attention at all before its release because I was too busy having and then parenting a small child, but I was intrigued by the idea of a Kim Reynolds novella and as I said, I like it the best of all the RoL non-Peter novellas so far. There's a genuine sense of threat without being outside the skill level of the characters, and Kim's internal voice is great. I also think it's very easy for authors to go astray when they try to expand their worldbuilding outside of their local milieu in the urban fantasy space, and in general I think Aaronovitch tries very hard to avoid the obvious pitfalls and mostly does.
That said, it IS very much outside his local milieu - easily the best thing about RoL as a series is its strong sense of place informed by the author being a native Londoner - and I can absolutely believe that it might seem off to someone who was more closely connected to the setting. I'd probably approach a RoL NZ-set story with a lot of trepidation, lol. And of course if you're mostly in the series for Peter & co then you're not going to get any of them except a quick Peter cameo. I really do think it is a nice addition to the wider canon though.

Robin Opsahl at Iowa Capital Dispatch, via The 19th:
Many patients seeking abortion care in Iowa in the past few weeks were unaware that the state has banned most abortions beginning Monday, Planned Parenthood staff said. More than six years after the Legislature first attempted to pass the law, abortion became illegal in Iowa, with narrow exceptions, at 8 a.m. Monday. Kristina Remus, a Planned Parenthood patient services associate, said Friday that many people she is working with are unaware that Iowa’s abortion law was changing. “To say the last few weeks have been hard is an understatement,” Remus said. “People are confused and seeking clarification. And a lot of patients are unaware that there is a law banning abortion at about six weeks before many people know that they’re pregnant set to take effect so soon on Monday. We are having extremely difficult conversations in my department with patients.” The Iowa law bans abortions after cardiac activity is detectable in an embryo, something that can occur as early as six weeks of gestation. There are some exceptions to the ban, including for rape, incest and to save the life of the mother.
The so-called “fetal heartbeat” law was blocked from enforcement shortly after it was passed in July 2023. It was signed by Gov. Kim Reynolds in a special session after the Iowa Supreme Court ruled to uphold an injunction on a similar 2018 law. But in this June, the state Supreme Court ruled that a district court judge should lift the injunction on the 2023 measure, in addition to setting a lower legal standard for testing the constitutionality of Iowa abortion laws.
Iowa’s draconian 6-week abortion ban law HF732 is now in effect, thanks to the Republican majority on the state’s Supreme Court.

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds (R) will not participate this summer in a federal program that gives $40 per month to each child in a low-income family to help with food costs while school is out
Marry Christmas to the poor Children of Iowa, your Republican Governor hopes you starve this summer.

Who will Trump pick as his VP candidate? (Part 3)
Who do you think Donald Trump will pick as his running mate in 2024? This does not mean who you would prefer--just who you think is most likely.
I've divided the possibilities into 4 polls because Tumblr only allows 12 choices per poll. Here are the current and former governors. You can also vote in the other polls for senators, representatives, and non-politicians.
After these polls close, I'll post a final round consisting of the top choices.
(Nikki Haley was governor of South Carolina before she became UN ambassador.)
Tumblr does not allow political posts like this to be Blazed. So to increase participation, please reblog if US politics is a topic that you post about.

The Republican Pro-corruption agenda continues.

“Ultimately, parents and kids will decide if they want to work or not,” Reynolds has said favorably about the bill. “It teaches the kids a lot. And if they have the time to do it and they want to earn some additional money, I don’t think we should discourage that.”
You heard it here first, folks, child labor "teaches the kids a lot." She's got three kids and eleven grandkids and I doubt any of them have or ever will go near a factory. Probably won't have to go into the service industry or an unpaid internship, either.
At this point I almost wish these people would just say "I hate poor and/or BIPOC kids and I sold my morals to child abusers to buy a reelection." It might be less nauseating.

Kim? It's free money Kim. It pays for itself Kim.

Kim. The Bush administration looked into these kinds of programs and found that not only are they sustainable, but that they make money over time. It's a long term investment in kids not starving, Kim
Tumblr media
Kim, we have no infrastructure because you keep dismantling it, Kim. Kim I swear to god.
I used to work in a school with a ton of food insecure students. Seeing stuff like this is heartbreaking. Remember that when you vote republican, the cruelty is the point. A few other states have refused the money. You'll never guess which ones.

Hey so I make stickers and thought to promote them! Feel free to reblog + share elsewhere.
The Trans People are Here to Stay profits will go to Iowa Trans Mutual Aid Fund, and I’m 12 stickers away from meeting cost of creating these stickers. I want to do more as an ally and think this might be at least something I can do.
Here are the Etsy links to both listings:

Book Bans Spreading Fast
Book Bans Spread to Iowa
Book bans are not about protecting children, but about silencing LGBT voices and controlling what is allowed to be taught to children. Authorities in Iowa are pushing for a broad crackdown on what books are allowed to be kept in school libraries. Republican Governor Kim Reynolds is backing a bill that would require every school district in the state to remove a book if it’s challenged in any one…
