note: this short novel has not been published in standalone form in English, only as part of the collection I’m Waiting for You. it’s the first of three linked stories, the Stellar Odyssey trilogy — I included the French translation (an omnibus of the trilogy) because it shows the series title, as the Korean original does. there are also Chinese and Arabic translations linked to I’m Waiting for You on Goodreads; based on the page count I think they’re probably translations of the four stories in the English collection, but they might also be like the French. if anyone has read either translation, please let me know — I’m curious now! there may be other translations not listed.
if you have read the original Korean novel, the English translation published as the title story in I’m Waiting for You, the French translation published as the first section of L’Odyssée des étoiles, or — if they do contain the title story — the Arabic or Chinese translations, vote yes in this poll, even if you have not read the rest of the collections / omnibuses!
vote yes if you have finished the entire book.
vote no if you have not finished the entire book.

"Teacher," Aman said in a small animal voice, "if we don't believe life is real, what can we ever hope to learn from it?"

Doom at Your Service: he need to hold her hand every day before midnight to recharge her so she won't feel pain from her brain tumor.
My Demon: he need to hold her wrist to use his power since his tattoo (the source of his power) is now on her wrist. Ergo, if he doesn't hold her wrist, he cannot access his demon power.
So, these 2 dramas have similar vibes, but different mechanism on how this holding hand/wrist works. And believe me, I ache for BOTH.

Korean GLs I'd Watch...
Let's try to manifest a world where some of the biggest Korean actresses were cast in major full-length GL kdramas.
COP + CRIMINAL
Esom (Because This Is My First Life) and Lee Da-hee (Search: WWW) play partners and besties, who both fall for their respective suspects for a crime spree against the patriarchy. (Think: Evening the pay gap at a major company; exposing scandals of sexist politicians; and chemically castrating sex offenders). Esom's love interest is Park Eun-bin (Extraordinary Attorney Woo), and Da-hee's love interest is Seo Yea-ji (It's Okay to Not Be Okay). It's a romantic crime thriller.
FRIENDS to LOVERS
Seol In-ah (Business Proposal) plays a new-money rich girl who hires a former old-money rich girl, played by Yoo In-na (Touch Your Heart), to be her personal assistant out of pity, but pretends she doesn't know her backstory. And Yoo helps Seol navigate rich society. Their conflict is that Seol's family bankrupted Yoo's family, and is getting the life Yoo was supposed to have, including the fiancee, the job, and the house. It's a sweet romantic comedy.
BOSS + EMPLOYEE
Kim Ji-won (Fight My Way) starts a job at a family law firm and works hard to get one of the partners, played by Son Ye-jin (Crash Landing on You), to be her mentor, but only because she wants her job. She starts off as a frenemie before Ye-Jin's hard edges rub off, and Ji-won develops a crush. Their obstacles are that Ye-Jin is married and in the closet, and Ji-won might be too ambitious to let go of her goals. It's a slow-burn romantic legal drama.
COOL GIRL + DORK
Park Shin-hye (Heirs & Pinocchio) plays a cold fashion house designer who hires an unlikely candidate to be her muse, played by Moon Ga-young (True Beauty). And what starts off as a toxic relationship blooms into a supportive one. Park Bo-young (Strong Girl Bong-soon) plays her head of design, who befriends Ga-young's bestie-turned-manager, played by Kim Seul-gi (Oh My Ghostess). They're the softer side couple. It's a romantic workplace dramedy.
FRIENDS to ENEMIES to LOVERS
Seo Hyun-jin (Why Her?) and Gong Hyo-jin (When the Camellia Blooms) were friends in college, but they had a falling out after a misunderstanding about a guy. They have a tense reunion as adults when Hyo-jin is setting up her nuptials at the wedding hall Hyun-jin manages. It's a slowburn romantic drama.
ONE-SIDED OBSESSION
Shin Min-a (Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha) plays the wife of a very powerful and abusive man and Hwang Jung-eum (She Was Pretty) plays the maid who is secretly in love with her and helps her escape. They go to Jung-eum's hometown where everyone assumes she's bringing her girlfriend home for the first time, because she didn't have the heart to tell them she got dumped after running away to be with her. Min-a decides to pretend to be the woman to pay her back, and they fall in love. The conflict being when Jung-eum's ex, played by Park Min-young (What's Wrong with Secretary Kim), returns to get her back.
💜 Your move Kdrama world! 💜

Pitying someone comes from the heart. It's not a need. —EPISODE 3
Doom at Your Service, 2021
ID: four gifs showing Doom sitting on a couch, reading a book with the lights on, and Dong-kyung trying to sleep on the couch on her side of the house. Doom appears from the shoulders up, and she appears in a close up shot with her eyes closed. Staring at his book, Doom cheekily says "I have no heart since I'm not human". Almost asleep, Dong-kyung mumbles, "Don't lie. You said you felt the same thing I did… at the same time". Expressionless but clearly taken aback, Doom looks up from his book, stares ahead for a moment, then turns his head fully to stare at her. /end ID.

2023 kdrama list
list of the kdramas i watched and loved in 2023
obviously this is quite late but to those who want to start a kdrama, this is it.
#10 - soundtrack #2
there is such a comfort in the soundtrack series. even soundtrack #1 was so good, but this new instalment, truly works on the og kdrama tropes. lovers to exes to accidental 'fate' encounter to forced proximity to lovers again. puppy dog male lead, angsty female lead, jealousy, wholesome second lead, it's got it all. and ofc, music.
#9 - king the land
many people did not like this drama. honestly, if you're watching a kdrama that is romance and comedy then why would be angry that it had romance and comedy. again, a true example of a classic kdrama, rich ceo guy with hardworking girl, mix in some trauma and employee-employer drama, and this is the perfect clichéd drama.
#8 - see you in my 19th life
honestly i just like watching ahn bo hyun. he is such a pretty man. storyline-wise, i feel like they did a lot of stuff, but the ending honestly disappointed me. shin hye sun, as usual, love the woman, what an actor, the second leads also did not disappoint, loved them all.
#7 - crash course in romance
such a heartwarming drama. choi chiyeol with the temperament of a wet cat, the stress of studies in all asian countries, not just korea. all the romances were so cute (barring the best friend and brother). one thing they could have done better was cast a younger actress for the female lead. even this love triangle was so cute and fun.
#6 - my demon
song kang and kim yoo jung really killed it with the chemistry. i mean, forget everything else, i'll just take 16 episodes of them hanging out. even behind the scenes reels will work. the plot was pretty solid, felt like a remake of doom at your service. song kang does a wonderful job at being both goofy and serious, and kim yoo jung did so good at the angsty ceo.
#5 - the good bad mother
am i surprised this ended up higher than my demon? yes. this was such a good show, the past and present layered together so beautifully. the villains seemed like actual villains, but you weren't sure who to hate until the last episode. really shows some aspects of motherhood through both the eyes of the kids and mothers. had a cute little romance as well.
#4 - the worst of evil
ji chang wook and wi ha jun. need i say more? i have said it once, and i'll say it again - so few do action like koreans do. i mean, vincenzo, my name, midnight runners, and now this, such action masterpieces.
#3 - daily dose of sunshine
park bo young wa sso cute in this one. i miss small kdramas with intense plots. mental illnesses were dealt with very well in this one. the romance was so cute, and chang ryul, my baby, i missed him so much.
#2 - alchemy of souls s2
i just. love. this series. so much. like, the characters are so well built, the storyline, the romance, the destiny, oh my god. please watch this.
#1 - welcome to samdal-ri
this comes as a surprise to absolutely no one. what a feel-good drama to end 2023. it was the perfect remix of hometown cha cha cha that we all needed. ji chang wook, my absolute gem of a man, and shin hye sun, queen of no shit given but too many shits given roles. adore the friendships, romance, calm setting, the love between everyone. please watch it.

kim bo-young 🤝 ted chiang
speculative fiction that builds stories around brilliantly crafted upside-down, inside-out worlds of alternate scientific realities that make the familiar alien and the alien familiar. and maybe make you have an existential crisis also
