8th October 2024
As it was our twelfth birthday party, lots of people arrived early for pizza (or an amazing Mixed Grill in the case of Lime and some lovely veggie curry and fiery chilli for Pine), followed by GOAT cupcakes. While everyone waited for food, arrivals from Essen were handed out, including Nucleum, Faraway and Flamme Rouge expansions; Let’s Go! To Japan and Cascadia mini expansions, and Die…

New to Me - September 2024
New to Me #boardgames - September 2024 @garphillgames @PlayRenegade @ArcaneWonders @beziergames
This post has been a bit delayed, for reasons. Some of those reasons were me killing a whole bunch of Greek soldiers in Ancient Egypt in Assassin’s Creed: Origins, which is super-addicting right now. The game, not the killing. I’m fighting for Cleopatra! Or something. Anyway, it’s also been my lack of writing energy as well. September was a pretty good month for new to me games, which made…

On Friday I played Food Chain Magnate (with the updated milestones from The Ketchup Mechanism) and Keyflower with The Merchants. Yesterday, I played Voidfall, Brass Birmingham, and First rat. I will be getting at least one game in at an event this evening, as well. So at least the year is going out on a high note.

I used to rewrite board game rulebooks as a hobby. I rewrote about 20 different rulebooks as practice in technical writing. I thought I was getting pretty good at it, but something still felt wrong about my rulebooks.
Then I took grad school classes in technical writing and communication.
And then I started to hate all rulebooks.
I hated rulebooks so much that I drafted an outline for an essay about it. I spent months looking up lectures and columns about technical writing in multiple genres. By the time I had finished, that "essay" had stretched to about 90 page of material. It started to feel like my graduate thesis.
This essay includes:
Writing advice from editors, teachers, and writers in different disciplines
Examinations of scientific evidence about learning styles and memory
Case studies into the rulebooks from On Mars, Keyflower, Stardew Valley, Acquire, and Teotihuacan
A prototype model rulebook for Stardew Valley: the Board Game that suggests a new rulebook model based on textbooks or tutorials
Plenty of quotes from people complaining about the mind-numbing awfulness of board game rulebooks
I tried to write this document in a casual tone for a general audience. I've started a discussion thread on BoardGameGeek, and I'm asking around for feedback. I'm a grad student trying to critique an entire genre of technical writing, and I assume that this concept will need testing and iteration. I appreciate your feedback!

January third: cowslip (primula veris)
" Our gold cowslips," he adds, " look like a full branch of large clustering king-cups; they carelessly raise themselves on their firm stalks, their corollas gazing upward to the changing spring sky, as they grow amidst their pretty leaves of vivid green. They adorn almost every meadow, and shed a glow of beauty wherever they spring."
Hoo boy. Are you all ready? Gods, I am NOT. but, uh, let's do this! Cowslip is a perennial bloom which can grow up to, uh.. yeah I'm not bothered to search that up. Nevermind, I stumbled across it anyway. Up to 25cm or 5 inches. Yellow in colour and bursts of flowers, cowslip is said to be one of the star sign 'Leo's' flowers, and ruled by Venus, under water.
There are multiple different types of cowslip. There's American cowslip and just.. cowslip cowslip. So, that being said, normal cowslip is the one we'll be talking about today, with a couple mentions of the others.
Cowslip has many monikers, among them being 'keyflower, lady's keys, key of heaven, password, buckles'. Now, you may notice a theme there. Keys.
Yes! That is indeed correct. The origin story of cowslip, or the key flower, is that Saint Peters (guardian or gatekeeper of heaven) dropped his keys. Also called that, because they resemble keys.
Because of the meaning of 'key to heaven', it was said that those who found the flower won the grace to get into the Big Upstairs. This is how it got the meaning 'winning grace, divine beauty, charmed, birth/youthfulness'. As it's yellow (dryly said), it's also associated with happiness.
Cowslip is also a herb; which means that it does have medicinal properties. When soaking cowslip flowers in boiling water to make tea, or grinding up the roots and combining with honey and water to make a syrup, there is scientific proof that it has beneficial properties to thin mucus, and help with bronchitis and common colds.
There are some sources which also suggest that the flowers can be a remedy to help subdue muscle spasm and headaches.
Again, people. Do your research. I'm not saying 'hey, this is definite', so please don't come after me saying 'you're an idiot, ha you believe in homeopathic remedies' b- actually I'll just make another post lmao.
So! Cowslip: grace, I have been charmed by your beauty, divine beauty, birth/youthfulness, happiness.
Paired with hawthorn, symbolises hope for a new prospect.
Paired with honeysuckle, it serves as a gift for your significant other's parents.

When Blue and Pink arrived, Crimson and Cyan were already there on their first visit, finishing their supper and playing a game of Molehill Meadows. This is a new game by the designer of Zuuli, that they had picked up at the UK Games Expo (meeting the designer Chris Priscott and his delightful family in the process). In Molehill Meadows, players take on the personality of Mika the Mole, who has…

On Saturday morning I drove the eight miles to the meet-up, only to discover that Herndon was having its winter festival, and there was nowhere to park. So I didn't get to game, and went home and watched The Batman instead.
Fortunately, made up for this in the evening, where I got to try Brick & Mortar (2021), which finally and fortuitously arrived on my doorstep about an hour before I had to head for my friend's home. (
This probably my second favorite new game of the year (behind only The Great Wall, which is in my top 5 of all time). It is a medium-weight economic game, although rather than winning by having the most money at the end it features the mechanism (most famously deployed in Clinic) where players must decide how much of their cash on hand to spend buying victory points at the end of each round, a decision that is here also complicated because the tiebreaker for buying and selling goods is being further behind on the VP track. (details and pictures below cut)
This falls into the same category as Keyflower and The Estates, in that the whimsical art is hiding a cutthroat game. (Below: main board/a player board, shop cards, and money cards)
This is an extremely heads-up game; you have to be paying close attention to what other players are trying to/capable of doing. When acquiring goods from the wholesale market or selling to customers, players secretly set prices and quantities (where you get early dibs if you buy more dearly or sell more cheaply.
On top of that, the amount of stock available to acquire and demand from customers is also set by the players, who each have a hand of cards that they prepare behind player screens - either face up to fill the market during supply, or face down to appear as customer demand during sales. Opponent has a monopoly on selling art? Guess nobody but them is putting any cards with art on them in the demand pile, etc.
In addition to the tight economics, there is a dash of Glory to Rome/Mottainai in this, in that each store is unique and breaks the rules in some small or not-so-small way, so you are also looking for good combos in the shops in your storefront.
The box claims that Brick & Mortar takes 1-2 hours, which is a lie. Even when you're fluent in the rules, figure 1.5-2.5 hours. And while it's technically for 2-4 players, these mechanisms are only going to shine with at least 3 and ideally the full 4. But if you have 3-4 people who will want to play a tight economic game I highly recommend this one. (Complexity-wise, this is a definite step up from, say, Smartphone, Inc. but a step down from e.g. Arkwright or Food Chain Magnate.)
