And now for something I’ve played again recently that is (unlike the previous entry, I just realized) neither difficult to find nor pricy: Spyrium. 

The players are industrial entrepreneurs in an alternate history Victorian England, shortly after the discovery of Spyrium, a crystalline substance with unusual energy properties.  (The game could just as easily have featured black coal tokens instead, but I for one am happy they went with a Steampunk theme.)  The designer, William Attia, also designed Caylus, which was not probably the first worker placement game (that would be Bus or Keydom), but was the game that made worker placement a thing.

Spyrium takes place over six rounds.  Unlike a typical worker placement game, where players take turns drafting actions using their markers, things here work a little bit differently.  The “board” each round consists of a matrix of 9 cards, and in the first phase of a round, players take turns putting down workers in between two cards.  (You start the game with 3 workers, but might have as many as 7 by the end.) 

 At a moment of any given players choosing, they may switch from placing workers in this market to pulling them back/activating them -- but once you have switched, you can’t go back to placing.  When you pull a worker you have a choice of two actions.  First you can activate one of the adjacent cards.  If it is a building or a patent, you claim the card and add it to your tableau.  If it is a person, you may employ their services, but do not claim the card. (During the activation phase, players may also use remaining workers to activate buildings in their tableaux.)  Buildings might be mines, which generate Spyrium, or factories or workshops, which convert Spyrium in to victory points, or working class neighborhoods, which give you more workers, or residences, which raise your income (which, for some reason, is based on the size of your house).

Over the course of the game, the cards get progressively better/more expensive, from Deck A (rounds 1-3), to Deck B (4-5), to Deck C (6).  You will only see 27 of 30 A cards and 18 of 20 B cards, so there is some variability between games (the C cards are always the same).

The trick is that the matrix of 9 cards represents a market, following the laws of supply and demand.  When you pull your meeple and activate a card, in addition to any cost printed on the card, you must pay $1 for each other meeple adjacent to that card.

Alternatively, you can choose for your worker to go to work for one of the adjacent cards, in which case you receive $1 for each other adjacent meeple.  So there is a sort of game of chicken going on, as players remove meeples congregated around the best cards for money, hoping nobody else chooses to pay the gradually decreasing price before they do.

Patents (the green cards) let you break the rules in some way, and also have some variable scoring condition (always maximum 7) at the end of the game (eg. 1 point per worker, 1 point per building owned, or 1 point per remaining Spyrium crystal).

In addition to receiving points for refining Spyrium, some buildings have points printed on them.  Each building after the first costs more and more to add to your tableau, in addition to the market cost, so there is a trade-off between adding more buildings or replacing old ones.  Additionally, whenever you purchase something with the residence symbol, you have a choice between raising your income by 1 or receiving points equal to your current income.  So there are multiple paths to victory.

This game has been somewhat divisive, possibly because of expectations mismatch from fans who already knew Caylus (which is a larger, more complicated game).  For my part, I love the supply-and-demand mechanic.

he turned on the video “heeeeey 9 year old army its pewdiepie here now show your loyalty and give me 15 haaaaail hitlerrrrssss” p[ewdiepie said and had evil white hair like devil may virgil and nasty beard like bin lader “what happened did he fall to the dark” megaman gx asked in shock he had to find answers to what happened to hero so he gotted a jump ship and went to where pewdiepie was living now to get answer.

suddanly neon nazis with rockat lunchaers attacked and megamanfgx was forced to eject as he bustered at them “taste my beam katana nazi scum” megamangx said and finished them off as he broke into a large corpration penhouse building hq that had pewdiepie on the front.

“welcome to pewdiepie hq subcribe to me and help me beet t series bro” he smiled and megamanGX pointed his buster weapon “i’ve heard terrible things that you becomed a nazi that you murdered younglings and recruited children into terroristisms” gasped megaman gx.

Pewdiepie laughed “its all true but we engineered the tseries war to create money for captialism you are all part of the spectucal my foolish bro” he smiled with evil.

“but my goal is to start race war and kill everything that does not look like me to build a new empire of death and murder and horror just like my new favorite book the turner dieries you see I DID NOT THINKING THE NAZIS WENT FAR ENOUGH HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!” pewdiepie said and summoned the darkness keyblade

megaman gx summoned his own keyblade everlasting peace and the two clashed keyblades

“i will go on air and order all the 12 year olds to join neo nazi death groups and help build a new white empire and kill everything then there will be only darkness and the heartless will sumon and consumed this world into darkness.

megamangx should have known bec uase pewdiepie had a suntan now AND HEARTLESS LOGO ON CHEST “Thats right i am a heartless now you see in 2014 when i changed from my old sickeningly good persona i did expernments on the heart with xehanort a scientist from another world and becomed a heartless and now i will summon keydom hearts by starting a new keyblade war and use the hearts to create a new super heart and create a leader a thosend times more eviler than adolf hitler ever was to lead the new super white race” PEWDIEPIE LAUGHED

megamangx used the trinity blast and knock him back “i won’t let you do that i killed hitler countless time and will stop you easily”

the keyblades slashed and smashed and clashed as sparkles flyed in air as they flye dinto sky dueling with the keyblades as light and darkness blowed up in the space “you where my hero pewdiepie i admired you once BUT NOW YOU HELP NAZIS?!” megamangx cryed

pewdiepie took a huge cut as he was damaged “I WILL BECOME ONE WITH KINGDOM HEARS I WILL BE THE NEO NAZI DEATH LEADER MYSELF!” he screamed and appeared thousends of lasers and sended them to megamangx as ghe blocked defelcted over and over wirth his keyblade

Megaman gx powered up into his chaos form and summoned ULTIMA WEAPON OMEGA DUEL KEYBLADES AND USED THE UNLIMITED KEYBLAQDE WORKS FORM “this ends now you will not take the light of kingdom heazrts” megman shouted and 100000000s of keyblades rised and cut into pewdiepies heartless over and over

pewdiepie slammed into ground as black smoke comed from his body “my heartless id ying is this end?” he sigh feeling his humanity slowing coming back

he could see the ghost of stephano with his golden body “come lets game in the next world” stephano smiled and took pewdiepies hand “remember the barrels those where good time” pewdiepie cryed feeling the good again

he looked back to megaman gx and he floate dinto the sky with stephano “than you megamangx” he said and vanished.

megamangx dropped his keyblade in agony “WHY MUST I KILL ALL MY HEROS? WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOR?!!?!” he screamed and cryed

I have a couple questions!: do you know where we the mere mortal followers of Key might find the 24 Hour Panel People that Tim was on could be found online? Also where the Red Nose Day clip/scene/i’m not sure of Tim (he’s wearing red stripes and he’s on a park bench I think?) might also be? Oh god this is so vague but honestly I feel like if you don’t know where they might be noone does!!
