Summary: You are on a road trip and your car has broken down. There's a man on the radio, his voice is sweet and happy and he calls himself Kevin. This man says he's going to come and get you, take you back to Desert Bluffs because you are his mate and he's waited so long to find you. You don't know very much about Desert Bluffs or StrexCorp or anything else this man is talking about, but there's something about him you trust.

This is the story about how you find, meet and fall in love with Kevin.

Stupid.

So very, totally stupid.

There is no end to the amount of stupidity in your actions right now, in this very moment. Your car has run dry of gas, you're in the middle of a desert and there is neither a phone signal nor a gas station to be found--not even the slightest flicker of life. You hadn't seen a rest stop for the last hour of driving, so it's not as if you can walk there on your own two feet if you wanted. There aren't even any cars passing by: you haven't seen another car for...you're not quite sure how long.

You're alone.

You're alone and stranded in the middle of a desert, no helped to be seen or called for. The sun is going down, dipping beneath the horizon, bringing with it the fear of certain death--there’s no emergency bag in tour car for something like this, as it's too full of clothes and silly things you thought to bring for a road trip across the country. The trip seems so far away in your mind now, so unimportant when facing the certainty of death all around you in the form of sand and scrublands, maybe even a few hazy, distant low-lying mountains.

You could do a lot of things to keep yourself safe. You could have done a lot of things to keep you safe, the past tense a heavy weight on your mind for the importance of preparation. So what do you ultimately do?

You sit.

And you wait.

It's not as if you can walk anywhere, especially not in the middle of a desert. Burning during the day, freezing at night; your only hope lay in being seen and picked up by another driver, if only to be carried to the next gas station so you could call a tow truck of some sort. Maybe it will be a nice old trucker, or maybe still it will be a small family of four plus a dog in the back seat.

You entertain yourself with these thoughts for a few moments more before you let out a sigh and decide that silence isn't something you care to deal with. You look to your phone, hoping to see if you have any songs or games or anything that could even mildly distract you from the moment, and something catches your eye:

A radio.

Specifically speaking, a radio frequency. It doesn't make any sense to see one working on your music streaming app, considering the lack of data, but you're not exactly in the mindset to question the laws of the universe in how they apply to cell phones in moments of emergency.

Desert Bluffs Radio

Maybe it was coming from a town, close enough that you can somehow pick up the signal--maybe it even meant they were close enough that you'd ultimate be rescued by the time the sun rose, a car from the town surely seeing and helping you out.

With the tap of a button, a voice spills out of your phones speakers.

“Good evening, Desert Bluffs! It’s your most productive and smiling radio host, Kevin!”

The voice is cheerful and bright, numbing away a little of the panic in your chest. “I hope you enjoyed that segment of static--that was the financial news! If you didn't hear the actual words behind the white noise, it means you haven't met your weekly quota and have been identified as needing some good ol’ re-education, courtesy of StrexCorp! They'll have you back into peak value in no time.

I would also like to mention that-”

And then, there is silence. The man simply stops talking as opposed to the station going out on your phone, leaving you oddly tense, your breath held in your lungs and eyes glued to the phone screen.

“...I'm sorry, listeners. It appears that there is someone special listening right now. Very special indeed. It caught me a little off-guard, I'm sure you all know the feeling!”

You blink at your phone and suppress a thread of unnerved fear that settles inside of your chest. It's a coincidence. Pure coincidence.

The man pauses again over the radio, leaving you again almost forgetting to breathe, your thoughts coming to a standstill until he finally, seemingly, moves to a new topic.

“I hope all of you are enjoying the evening, Desert Bluffs,” the voice, Kevin, speaks almost softly through the speaker. For all of a heartbeat it feels as if he’s talking directly to you. “After all, the night sky is such a rarity. All those stars and galaxies out there oh, it makes one feel so small and helpless underneath the desert sky, sitting by themselves. In their car. Listening to the sound of my voice.”

Your brain chose specifically not to listen to a portion of the man's words, and instead on how soothing they sounded, how lulling the tone itself felt against your thoughts. It feels like a gentle trickle of water over your brain, washing away the worries and leaving you with the simple desire to keep listening, you hand clutching tight to your half-dead phone.

“...I don't think I'll be on for very much longer, Desert Bluffs. Temporarily of course--nobody can get rid of me that easily! I know because people have tried, and failed--it didn't end very well for those involved!”

Another short beat of silence, another thread of fear in your chest, brain coming to the conclusion that this all might just be a nightmare, a dream fueled by long nights on the road and one too many energy drinks. You let out a held breath and finally force yourself to move, thumb inching towards the power button on your phone to turn it off and conserve power-

But the sound of the voice stops you cold.

“I'm coming for you.”

You blink. The world around you feels frozen.

“You're scared and frightened and so very alone, but don't worry my dearest mate,” Kevin's voice is low and careful and dangerous. “I'll be there to get you soon.”

And then the phone is off, the radio silent, the world plunged once more into silence. You stare at the device in your hands for a few long, unsure seconds, trying to make sense of everything you just heard. The words are still floating around your mind, seared into memory like some sort of promise you can't shake no matter how hard you try to forget. Kevin's voice echoes in your mind, leaving you to toss the phone to the empty passenger seat as if it burns you, so your eyes can drift up to the rear-view mirror, then the side mirrors, and then finally to the windshield before your face.

The fear lingers long after the air is empty of noise. You don't have much of a desire to use your phone again after that, though you come up instead with the excuse that it's solely to conserve power. You're close enough to a town anyway, someone will pass you by at some point and think to check on you--it's not as if it's normal for people to pull their car off to the side of an empty highway in the middle of the desert.

The sun has fallen completely over the horizon, spilling darkness over the scrublands and asphalt. You're not sure if you feel scared or not of the darkness, but safety and paranoia win out enough that your eyes glance about to make sure all the door are locked of the car. Though animals have yet to master the art of opening a car door, this is road trip safety 101, and...it makes you feel better.

A little bit, at least.

It won't be long before the temperature drops. You’re not quite sure how cold it can get at night in the desert, but like hell are you going to take a risk and freeze to death before someone can even find you.

You’re not equipped for any sort of emergency or overnight stay in your own car. There’s no thick blankets or rations of water or food, no extra batteries or portable charger of any sort, but you at least have some extra clothes packed away, clothes that include a couple jackets. You pick one out from the back seat after going through one of your suitcases, deciding on the one that looks the warmest.

Maybe your car will retain some of the heat of the afternoon sun. It’s a silly thought, but it’s one that offers you even the mildest hope of comfort through the night--what else exactly can you do anyway?

You find yourself staring at the front windshield for a while, off into the deep, unpolluted darkness of the night sky. When is the last time you saw the sky look so bright, so big? There are so many stars up there, painting it like a canvas of speckled glitter and washes of color that you don’t know the origin or name of.

The driver seat is adjusted but a few moments later, leaned back so you can lay somewhat comfortably, feet propped on the console and eyes staring out the window to your side. It feels weird to just….lay there, staring out into the stars, car quiet and world silent around you. Surreal, almost, almost like something out of a dream. Somewhere in the back of your head you still think you’re dreaming, maybe a little bit, and this entire thing is supposed to be showing you something important about your subconsciousness.

What in the world getting stranded in the desert is supposed to mean in terms of enlightenment upon your waking mind, you’re not sure at all, but it’s at least a little comfort when panic is constantly pressing against the back of your thoughts.

Maybe five or so minutes later you think to glance towards the passenger seat. Your phone still sits there, screen black and exactly where you had tossed it sometime before.

“I'm coming for you.”

You remember the man’s promise. It simmers in your thoughts and clings with tendrils of unnerved caution and curiosity, like you're swimming in the ocean, treading water at the surface, the words lurking somewhere below.

You're probably just overthinking things.

You're probably just letting the fear of the situation get the best of you. Yeah. That makes sense--no need to worry about problems that don't exist, especially when there are others needing your attention and planning.

It takes a while--minutes or hours or somewhere yet in between--but you somehow manage to fall asleep like that, face turned to the passenger seat, body curled over the driver seat and your mind trying to keep a hold on itself.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Consciousness comes to you slowly. First the knowledge of your own breathing, then the sensation of your limbs, and finally the hold of your own mind still lapsing over the last few moments of a dream you will assuredly forget.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

You take in a deep breath, letting the air fill your lungs until they begin to ache. There’s a dim awareness that you’re mindly uncomfortable, body curled up in on itself sometime in the night in a way that leaves one of your arms uncomfortably over the center console and one of your legs pressed sharply against the curve of the steering wheel.

Tap. Tap. Tap.

Your eyes flutter open after a few moments. The world is still dark, or at least the sun has yet to rise. You glance towards your phone instinctively to check for a time, but a groan escapes your lips when you remember that you had turned it off before you fell asleep. With another near-painful breath of air in your lungs, you finally start to make out a dull, rhythmic tapping noise. It’s close, against your car, and you can’t make out what’s causing it--it almost sounds like something on one of the glass windows.

You feel watched.

There’s no trees around to cause such a noise, certainly no wind to brush so solidly against the glass, so it leaves you feeling confusion drip into your otherwise groggy thoughts. The car is cold, all the heat from the day having been lost and leaving you shivering, curled in on yourself--the jacket has done little to help with anything.

Tap.

You can’t take that noise anymore. It’s starting to get into your head and stab through your thoughts.

And then it hits you:

The tapping is coming from the driver side window.

Right above you.

Warning bells start going off in your mind before you move, body jumping up and head spinning around in a panic towards the sound. There’s a rush of adrenaline in your system, heart hammering at full speed in a feeling of utter terror that you can’t begin to comprehend or stop--it’s all instinctive fear, a terror that’s been lingering in you since the moment your car broke down and--

There’s a face in the window.

There’s a darkened face a few inches away from the window.

There’s a face with hollow eye sockets and a wide, stitched, manic grin just outside the window. Moonlight can barely show the detail in it, but you certainly don’t need more than a cursory glance with wide, terror-stricken eyes to feel an instinctive gut-reaction crawl up your throat and out your mouth in a scream.

It feels like an eternity, but it’s probably only a few seconds as your brain’s haywire reaction finally settles down. You blink, and the face is still there, not a mere trick of the light or a lingering night terror from nigh-uncomfortable sleep.

And then you see the face’s mouth moving--it’s the face of a man, and he’s speaking, saying something just outside the window; he’s no longer tapping on the glass.

“Hello!”

It’s not exactly what you expect of the first words from someone who could pass as looking like a serial killer.

You merely blink at him, your body all but pushed itself back into the passenger seat, hands clutching at the nearest objects and heart still beating like a drum against your ribcage.

He blinks at you in return with those dark, empty eyes, and you could swear for the briefest moment that there was a little flicker of light in them, staring at you. The man eventually tilts his head, which is solidly on top of a body standing outside of your car.

It’s hard to make out much detail; it’s still dark, and the moon’s soft glow can only help your eyes pick up so much, as adjusted to the lack of sunlight as they are otherwise.

“Who-” you start to speak, trying not to let your words break. “Who are you? What-....what do you want?”

As if the man’s smile couldn’t get any creepier, it grows wide--you’re not sure if it’s normal for humans to smile that wide--and you catch a flash of sharp teeth behind those lips.

“My name is Kevin!” The man says, as if he’s merely exchanging soft pleasantries as the two of you meet on some random street corner and not as two complete strangers in the middle of a desert, at night, when your car is broken down and he looks like someone out of a goddamn horror movie. “I’m here to pick you up.”

The words go in one ear and out the other, your brain simply can’t filter them right.

“Wh….what?”

“You’re broken down out here,” Kevin says, still so polite, eyes still a void. It’s as if he’s speaking coherently, as if he expects you to understand. “I took a little longer than expected, I suppose I misjudged how far you were from the edge of town! But I’m here, and I’m going to get you back to Desert Bluffs where you belong!”

“I-” you start, sputtering one word into the next. “I don’t--what are you talking about? Desert Bluffs--I--...I don’t think-”

You aren’t allowed a moment to put your thoughts together before you suddenly hear the car door opening (how the fuck, how the fuck that was locked). and the man’s face, now unobscured, peering at you with a hand extended into the car for you to take.

“Don’t you remember?” He has the gall to sound a little offended. “You heard me on the radio a couple hours ago; I said I was coming to get you? Surely you haven’t forgotten my promise already, dearest.”

Promise?

What promise?

You stare at his hand in a dumb-struck silence, unsure what to do or say or even think as Kevin waits patiently for you.

And then, with the weight of a mountain, it hits:

“I'm coming for you.”

The words he had spoken on the radio, the eerie promise that had chilled you to the bone. The words you had brushed off as something on an evening radio show, words spoken to hundreds, thousands of people at once. You can remember the shiver of surreal fear that had filled you at hearing them, but it’s another sort of apprehension entirely when you’re confronted with the same man who spoke them, a stranger , who is still holding his hand out for you to take and presumably leave the car and go...where?

Desert Bluffs?

You’ve heard the name of that town before, yes, it was from the same radio broadcast.

Maybe you’re just….dreaming. Yeah, this is weird enough to be a dream, weird and crazy and not making any sense. You want to pinch yourself or something but can’t, eyes catching as Kevin leans in farther into the car, hand extended so it’s only half a foot or so from your chest. Though it’s obvious he’s wanting you to get out of the car, he’s making no move to force you.

Somehow, the gesture seems sweet.

You...take his hand in yours, eventually, after a few breaths and a decision made completely outside of your own brain. You’re not quite sure what compels you to do so after all the red flags practically screaming around you, but you still find yourself being gently pulled out of the car and helped to your feet, standing so close to this Kevin that your chests are almost touching.

His smile hasn’t faded, or maybe that’s just the scars marring the sides of his lips. Maybe that’s why his smile looked so creepy mere moments ago. You’d think that being closer would reveal some detail in his eyes, maybe show that it was just a trick of light that made them look hollow but, nope, they’re completely black, orbs of pure void with only pinprick dots of light to be what you horrifyingly assume show where he’s looking. Pupils maybe? Sorta?

God, you have to be dreaming.

But at least Kevin looks happy. Very, very happy.

“You don’t know how long I’ve been waiting to meet you!”

You feel his hands start winding around your waist, fingertips pressing gently against your lower back. Feelings erupt in your head in response to the touch, but you’re not quite sure what those feelings are. Fear? Com..fort? Safe...ty?

You decide not to think about it.

“Oh, by the Smiling God above, what luck is there that you’d break down here, just outside of Desert Bluffs and that you would tune into my very radio station!” Kevin sounds entranced, almost dreamy, his arms around you firmly enough that you can feel him rocking the two of you back and forth together. “This must be a sign that we are simply meant to be--beyond what has been vaguely communicated through prophetic, blood-soaked nightmares of course.”

He sighs and finally takes a step back from you, though one of his hands find your own and gently clasps them together. Since this is all a dream you let him do so, finding an odd warmth in the touch and an eerie comfort in his exuberant joy.

Besides, what else are you to do? Stay at your car and cook when the sun comes up?

“Are you...going to take me to Desert Bluffs?” You finally ask, voice soft and small.

Kevin perks at the sound and his eyes find yours again--despite all of the manic glee, he doesn’t seem to hold any trace of maliciousness; outside of the scarring and void eyes, he’s actually not that intimidating in your eyes, or at least he’s doing very good at not seeming like it to you.

“Of course! I’m going to take you back and get you settled--then I can come and get your things for proper in-processing through StrexCorp and make sure that you have everything you need oh, oh goodness, I’m so excited that you’re finally here!”

Some of his words don’t make a lot of sense, but you opt not to start questioning them when you’re tired and hungry and so very cold. You’re actually shivering, arms tucked around yourself with a jacket on that’s doing absolutely no good.

Kevin stops talking when he seems to notice, peering at you with an unreadable look for all but a breath of time.

“Let’s get you somewhere warm, dearest,” he says, tugging you away from your car, towards another vehicle parked just a bit behind it. The lights are on, too bright to catch the detail of it, but you’re certain that it means that the inside is already warmed up and toasty.

Kevin doesn’t force you to walk with him, he merely keeps his hand wrapped on yours, firm but not tight. This is a rather surreal dream, but you figure it’s at least a nice one, so you let him lead you to the car, open the passenger side door and let you in.

The other car really is warm inside. It feels nice against your cold skin and body, the seat so plush and welcoming as you lay back into it. Kevin takes his place at the driver side, changing the gears with an audible little rumble and turning the car back onto the road.

“Just rest a bit,” Kevin murmurs after a little while. You feel one of his hands reach over to you and fingertips card through your hair as he stares forward onto the lit roadway. “We’ll be home in Desert Bluffs before you know it. So many years and you’re finally here. With me!”

There’s something rather contagious in the man’s joy, because you find yourself smiling a little as your eyelids droop, vision darken and eventually, you fall back into the soft, now warm embrace of sleep.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw sits at a crossroads somewhere between American Truck Simulator’s slice of trucking Americana and the iconic combat of Freespace 2. It’s a highly competent, single-player space combat sim complete with warring factions, pirates, corrupt cops, and dubious sectors filled with all manner of undesirables, a nicely detailed trading system, and stellar combat. While intense difficulty spikes and lacking mission information leaves some scarring on the hull, Rebel Galaxy Outlaw delivers a worthy payload.

You play as Juno Markev, a pilot stuck between the search for her husband’s killer, her need to make cash to cover the debt of replacing her recently junked ship, and her shady past. Told largely through comms messages and cutscenes between missions, many of the characters you meet are fairly archetypal, but share a sense of relatability and groundedness that lends them a lot of their charm. Character animation in story cutscenes can feel quite stiff, lending them an uncanny valley vibe, but these moments are short and don’t distract from the wider storytelling. Juno herself is a big highlight; her endearingly grounded sense of self-belief and her inability to suffer the fools she finds herself constantly dealing with always makes for fiery dialogue.

Story threads are easy to lose track of due to the sheer number of things to do. When it’s just you and your ship, it’s all about surviving the hustle of being a space trucker; trading and smuggling goods, taking mercenary jobs, mining and selling resources–anything you can do to keep those credits rolling in so you can upgrade or outright replace the colossal junker of a ship you’re given at the game’s outset. In the opening hours, your travel is limited to one system and a handful of local missions, but once you get your hands on a jump drive you can start making your way across the galaxy, and things start to open up some more.

There are five ships you can purchase from various stations, each with traits that make them suitable as freighters or as fighters. While some ships are better suited for certain tasks than others, you’re not locked into a playstyle because of your choice. Fighters can add cargo bays to move more items, and you can take a freighter fully kitted out with advanced weapons pirate-hunting and it’ll still feel pretty good.

The beautifully detailed cockpit is the default view, and it is daunting at first–though you can also play in third-person–which seems weird given that you play an experienced pilot; the numerous switches, lights and dials each flicker away, and you’re not really sure what they do at first. There’s no tutorial to help with this, so it can feel like you’re being thrown in the deep end. But while it takes some time to understand what the ship systems are telling you, it’s not long before you’re fluent in reading the controls and gaining a better grasp on any given situation. There is support for a flight stick and a HOTAS, but I found it best with a gamepad as everything you need is right at your fingertips.

Stations are where everything outside of combat happens, although you don’t hop out of your ship and wander around. Instead you browse a handful of menus to get what you need before setting off on your next journey. This is where you make repairs or ship upgrades, handle commodities trading, sign up to one of the guilds that offer side missions, or browse the standard side missions for that station. It’s an elegant way of handling station traversal, and the nice visual shots and animations of the station internals give you a sense of what type of station you’re in and the kinds of things you might find there. You can bother the local bartender for helpful gameplay tips, sector news, or other information or play one of the handful of trite but fun mini-games like slots, 8-ball, or Star-Venger, a simple take on an Asteroids-based sprite shooter.

Missions are either picked up from stations or, in the case of story missions, given through dialogue. They generally amount to going to a waypoint and finding or killing something for varying factions. Some of these have an effect on your standing with different factions, which can change who treats you as hostile when out amongst the stars as well as the stations you can land at. Missions also show a level of risk from mild to extreme, but these aren’t a great benchmark, as countless times I warped into a mission zone of mild-to-low risk only to be completely overwhelmed within 10 seconds of my arrival. At least a reload after death is super fast, returning you to the last jumpgate you took or station you’d left and allowing you to do something else for a while before coming back to try again. But this is also a huge source of frustration as the only way to push through these difficulty spikes is to grind for credits and ship upgrades.

The tension in a good firefight is wonderful. When you’re not tuned in to one of the seven different radio stations that broadcast throughout the galaxy, the game’s southern hard rock soundtrack kicks into overdrive as the lasers start flying. Firefights will sometimes offer up instant rewards, either as bounty credits or loose cargo that’s been freed from the breached hull, and you can freely engage the tractor beam to suck these up in order to sell on yourself and reap the benefits. In some cases you may also find an ejected pilot who you can haul in for detention, or you can enslave them and sell them on the black market, though doing so will put you on the wrong side of the space cops, which can make life in the outer rims much harder than it needs to be.

The cockpit views on each of the game’s crafts are tight, and there’s no option to move your head around, so you rely heavily on your radar to know where to go and what’s around you. It’s invaluable when in the thick of the action, which can very quickly get overwhelming unless you act decisively. Power management is a big part of this, and it’s a system that adds a nice slice of tactical thinking to the visual feast of the combat. Weapons fire has two modes, linked and staggered, and while linked fire will unleash the full power of your hardpoints, it’ll drain your available power quickly and severely limit your ship’s capabilities. Staggered fire only fires one hardpoint at a time, meaning it uses less power overall, but can be sustained for longer. You can also quickly reroute power between the engines, weapons and your shields, but as there’s only so much to go around you’re always settling on a compromise between offense and defense, so the system as a whole works wonderfully well as a test of situational awareness.

Rebel Galaxy Outlaw’s gorgeous visual design is one of its biggest strengths. There’s a huge assortment of stations, ships, planets and other things to see while out in the vastness of space. From the huge casinos of the Nevada sector to the glass-capped atriums of Hobbes Station, there are postcard moments to be found almost everywhere in the galaxy. There’s also a wildly in-depth and excellent ship painter that lets you completely redesign the paint job of your ship, so you can customize to your craft’s look down to minute details. That extends to the combat, too, with under fire shields flashing in protest and hull plating falling apart as its struck by cannon fire before bursting into a flaming wreck in front of you. Distant firefights look like a laser light show.

There is a lot to do in Rebel Galaxy Outlaw, so much so that it’s easy to lose yourself among the myriad of activities beyond flying around and shooting things. Juno is a great character despite her sometimes jarring movements, as are much of the rest of the charming cast. The combat is fast, frenetic and consistently challenging, although that challenge can sometimes feel impossible without stepping back and grinding out some progress elsewhere, which quickly gets frustrating. Thankfully the core of the game–its combat, trading, and space flight–are all superb and had me launching into the stars for many hours of galactic trading and explosive firefights.

Pioneer Returns v1.3.3

INT. CAR - NIGHT EDWARD is driving down an empty highway somewhere in Washington state. His cars headlights are the only source of light for miles. we briefly glimpse a large duffel bag in the back seat. A baseball game plays out on the radio EXT. CAR - NIGHT A thick bank of fog rolls in, nearly whiteout conditions. Then, in an instant, the car clears through the fog, back into a near complete darkness EXT. DINER - NIGHT Up ahead appears an all night truck stop/diner. Ed takes the exit and heads in to grab some coffee. Ed takes the duffel bag out of the backseat and locks it in the trunk. INT. DINER - NIGHT Edward sits down at the counter, noticing the TRUCK DRIVERs the left, GEORGE, and right of him, JERRY, are staring. MAGGIE, the waitress walks over and pours him a cup of coffee. MAGGIE Don’t mind the regulars, they lost their manners years ago. JERRY Where you headed slick? Ed looks over at the gruff trucker to his right EDWARD I’m going up north to see about a logging job. The truck driver finishes the last of his coffee and stands to leave. He leans over to Ed as he places a $5 on the counter (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 2. JERRY No, you ain’t. Jerry grins and looks back up at the waitress. JERRY Thanks for the pie Mags. Jerry exits. Edward follows him with his eyes until he is gone, returning his attention to Maggie. MAGGIE He’s harmless. Can I get you a slice of pie? Edward hands the waitress some cash. EDWARD I should be getting back out there, still have a long way to go. MAGGIE Here. Maggie puts a slice of pie in a small box and hands it to Edward. MAGGIE CONT. It’s on the house. INT. CAR - NIGHT Edward is back on the road, the darkness seemingly has closed in on the car. The headlights are a match at the back of a cave. baseball game is still on in the background. The headlights flicker, then go out altogether. The radio bolts to static The headlights come on after a moment, but the highway is again thick with fog. Edward strains to see anything in front of him. The fog is getting thicker and thicker, now the headlights hit up against the cloud like a wall. Ed slams on his breaks, but the car continues rolling forward.

3. EXT. SPACE - NIGHT We see the classic car in full now, emerging from the fog into the void of space. Milky galaxies dot the sky. INT. CAR - NIGHT The radio comes back in tune, ANNOUNCER mid sentence ANNOUNCER -drive to right field and deep going going gone and another homerun for reggie jackson! Ed turns down the radio, gazing, awestruck at interstellar space. Ed mouths ’what the fuck’. After a few moments, he turns the radio up and sits half dazed. INT. CAR - NIGHT It’s several hours later, the game and post-game shows have wrapped. ANNOUNCER thats sports time, thats world series time, were out of time, Im jim Kelley and we’ll see you next time on sports radio hour. Ed turns off the radio. He sits silently. INT. CAR - NIGHT Edward dozing, is jolted awake by another block of static from the radio. Slowly, the sound takes shape - we hear the SOUNDS OF EARTH; RAINFALL, THUNDERSTORMS, THE JUNGLE AT NIGHT... Transmission cut. silence.

4. INT. CAR - NIGHT Block of static. The sound forms once more - similar to the first set of sounds, but they are cut and arranged in a different order. The sounds seem to be jumping quickly from one topic to the next, as if a new message is being composed.. The tempo of the sound increases, the radio dial jumps left and right on its own. A bright blinding light fills the car, Edward throws his arm over his eyes to block it out. A loud metallic THUD rocks the car. The light cuts, all is black again. INT. CAR - DAY Edward awakens in his driver’s seat, the low pink light of dawn streaming into the cab. Edward takes stock of his car, his body...everything checks out. He reaches for the door latch... EXT. HILL - DAY Edward steps out of his car and looks around. He is parked on top of a hill overlooking a dawn-lit field. He now notices smoke rising from the hood of his car. Walking over to the front, he notices a GOLDEN PLAQUE lodged in the GRILL. With some effort, Ed pries the plaque out of his grill and examines it. Down at the bottom is an apparent map of the solar system and the trajectory of a probe etched into the gold. Edward looks out over the field, the peaceful dawn skyline has now transformed, and is filled with endless interstellar space. Music crescendos - Ed falls backward...

5. INT. HOTEL - DAY Ed wakes up frantically in a hotel bed soaked in sweat. After taking a moment to calm himself, Ed checks the nightstand finding a... INSERT: hotel room key - monogramed with Hudson Lodge logo Rising from the bed, ed walks over to the window, peering through the blinds - he sees his car below in the parking lot, hood facing toward us. EXT. PARKING LOT - DAY The classic car is spotless, no scratches, dents, or emanating smoke. INT. HOTEL - DAY Relaxing, ed sits down in an upholstered chair, only then noticing... INSERT: Square foam container Ed slowly rises, walks to the box and looks inside- instantly chucking it across the room. the pie inside splatters against the wall, slowly drooling down. Then he remembers...running over to the desk he pulls out all the drawers, then, resorting to the nightstand bible, he rips out a page and scribbles down a likeness of the plaque. Staring at the picture, Ed grabs a bottle out of the mini bar and returns to his upholstered chair. Ed downs the bottle in a gulp. ED Dammit. Cut to.

6. EXT. HIGHWAY - NIGHT Ed speeds down the highway in the opposite direction. EXT. DINER - NIGHT Ed roughly pulls into a parking spot near the front and jumps out. INT. DINER - NIGHT Ed opens the door, the truckers from the night before are sitting in their usual spot. Maggie emerges from the kitchen, hauling chicken fried steak for the trucker on the left, JERRY. MAGGIE Ill be right with you. The trucker on the right, GEORGE, gets up to leave. Ed remains near the door, shifting to allow George to pass. Maggie walks back over to Ed MAGGIE Do you want a booth? ED I came in here last night- MAGGIE I remember you. Have a seat sweetie. Ed looks around, then chooses a spot at the counter several chairs from the trucker. ED Something happened. After I left. MAGGIE I’m sure it was nothing you couldn’t handle. ED When I was in here, It seemed like you knew something. Jerry stands up from his stool and walks over to Ed. (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 7. JERRY I’d like to know something. Ed turns to Jerry ED Get in line pal. MAGGIE Hey Jer can I get ya some pie? JERRY I remember you said you were looking for work. Hows that logging job son? ED All staffed up. JERRY That so? Jerry takes another step closer toward Ed. ED I’ve had some hard luck. MAGGIE C’mon Jerry give him a break. JERRY Mags what do I always say about this highway? MAGGIE Jerry, come on. JERRY Margarette what do I say? Jerry now stands next to Ed. Ed stands and stares back at Jerry. MAGGIE There’s two kinds of people Jerry. JERRY That’s right, there’s two kinds of people travel this road; Truckers and outlaws. Jerry glances out the window. (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 8. JERRY And I don’t believe I saw you pull in with a rig. Ed takes a step back toward the door ED I didn’t do a damn thing you old fuck. Jerry steps toward Ed JERRY y’did something bad enough to wind yer ass right here. That’s got-damn for sure. Ed takes another step back, just then George walks in, blocking Ed’s Exit. George also has the Ed’s duffel bag. GEORGE I found this in his car. George opens up the duffel bag, filled with cash, tossing it onto the counter. JERRY That’s a lot of money, huh george. GEORGE I’ll say. JERRY I suppose that’s milage? You hear about any banks getting ripped off down south Mags? MAGGIE I’ll check the paper. ED That’s my money, money I earned. JERRY For what? ED That’s my business. JERRY You’re not really in a position to be keeping secrets from me slick. (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 9. Jerry takes another step towards Ed, who backs from Jerry and George, tensing for a fight. ED Take the bag, it’s yours. But first you have to tell me what I came to know. JERRY Who’s to say we won’t just fuck you up and take the cash? Good Samaritan reward for bringing down a wanted felon. GEORGE They’d probably give us medals Jer. ED Look, I was paid to deliver something. I don’t know what it is, and frankly I don’t want to know. Look for yourself, it’s in the bottom of the bag. Jerry looks at George, nods at him. George reaches into stacks of cash to the bottom of the duffel bag and removes a black, thin, metal briefcase. ED All I know is it’s got to be delivered tonight. That’s the first half. JERRY So we do have a trucker. ED Something happened to me last night, and I know you know something about it.Take the damn money, I’m behind schedule coming back here so tell me what you know and Ill be on my way. Jerry looks at george. JERRY I’m all set Mags, tell him about the shit. Jerry and George collect the duffel bag and walk back to their respective meals. Maggie turns to Ed (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 10. MAGGIE It’s pretty simple. For reasons unknown, this particular um, stretch of highway is special. ED Special is a menu option. What I saw was insane. MAGGIE You’ve heard of the Bermuda triangle right? ED Sure. MAGGIE Well think of it like that, except those that pass through are less Amelia Earhart, and more smokey and the bandit. ED so the space stuff? People see that? MAGGIE It depends I guess, some get radio interference. You drove through a big one. So you probably got a little more than most. Ed looks at Maggie intently. ED I saw something last night. MAGGIE The first time is a weird one for everybody. ED Has anyone ever seen anything like this? Edward hands Maggie the loose page with his sketch of the plaque. MAGGIE A sign? (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 11. ED It was a metal plate with sketches on it. MAGGIE So a sign. EDWARD Yes, but it looked like hieroglyphics, like a map or something. Then there was this light, and- MAGGIE What? ED Chuck Berry. Jerry looks up from his food. MAGGIE You saw this? EDWARD I had to pry that thing out of my grill. JERRY (To George) That’s a new one. Ed turns to Jerry ED So you haven’t seen this before? JERRY Not exactly. George leans in and whispers something to Jerry, who nods. JERRY Where’s your delivery? Ed pulls out a business card with coordinates written on the back, he hands it to Jerry who inspects it. JERRY Mags can you get me a map? Jerry inspects the map, finding the coordinates - a spot in the woods a few miles from the highway. (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 12. JERRY You can’t get there tonight. ED What do you mean? GEORGE The storm. Rigs don’t come back when they’re this strong. ED Doesn’t matter. I forfeit my other half if it’s not done tonight. JERRY Forfeit your cash or forfeit your life, son. ED That would be one and the same in my situation, sir. Jerry looks at George. JERRY tell ya what. Jerry takes two large stacks of cash out of the duffel bag then tosses the bag back to Ed. JERRY I’ll take you there, but I need to find a route around the storm. You don’t want to get caught in the open when it rolls in. INT. DINER - NIGHT Ed sits by himself at a table off to the side of the restaurant, staring into a cup of coffee. Maggie comes over and sits across from him. She slides a plate of apple pie over to ED MAGGIE Hey. Ed looks tired, he smiles at her. ED Hey. Can I ask you something? (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 13. MAGGIE sure. ED Why do you stay out here? MAGGIE One place is as good as the other i guess. ED But Here? MAGGIE It has its charms, for instance, I have an apple tree in my back yard and it makes the best apples. Maggie pushes the plate closer to Ed. Ed takes a bite. ED wow. You made this? MAGGIE If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe. ED Hm. Far out. MAGGIE How’d you get caught up in this business? You can’t work a real job? ED I ran out of options when I burned my draft card. You have to live in Had to get creative to make it work. But that life’s just about done with. MAGGIE Because of this delivery? ED It’s enough to start over. No more running. Jerry comes over to the table (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 14. JERRY We should go before it gets any worse. ED Okay. Ed turns to Maggie ED Thanks for the pie Mags. Cut to. INT. RIG - NIGHT Jerry and Ed drive down a quiet back road, Ed holding the map, shining a weak flashlight at it. JERRY How far from the trail head? ED It’s coming up on your right. JERRY Listen, its going to get worse the closer we get to the storm. Keep your whits about you. Ed can see a large thundercloud on the horizon, strangely colored compared to normal storm clouds. ED Where do you think they go? -beat- JERRY You’ve seen. cut to. EXT. RIG - NIGHT The semi truck turns down a dark logging road, fog lightly hanging in the air.

15. INT. RIG - NIGHT The semi rolls up a winding logging road deeper and deeper into the woods. Jerry’s semi truck rolls to a stop. JERRY End of the road. Ed stares into the dark forest. JERRY You’ve got an hour, maybe two if the pressure holds. I’ll keep her running, and I won’t wait. Ed nods, steps out of the Rig. JERRY Hey, good luck. ED 10-4. JERRY Christ. Get a move on. EXT. FOREST - NIGHT Ed steps out of the cab with a flashlight and Duffel bag slung over his shoulder. The floods from the rig light about 10 feet into the woods, then become engulfed by darkness Ed sets off into the woods. EXT. FOREST - NIGHT Ed hikes through the woods, the distant roar of thunder can be heard. Ed pauses to shine a light at his map, and compass. A clearing in the canopy above him shows a clear dark night sky. Ed pushes on.

16. EXT. TRAILER - NIGHT Ed stumbles through a thicket into a small clearing at the bottom of a hill. A large airstream with a radio antennae on the roof sits at the top of the hill. A man, KEN, opens the door, his small figure silhouetted by the light from inside the trailer. KEN Are you the guy? ED yeah. KEN You’re late. Get inside. Ed picks up his pace, walking in with Ken. INT. TRAILER - NIGHT Ed enters just after Ken, who is already in another room. Looking around, Ed notices the room is small, mostly white, and mostly empty, spare for a glass box in the corner of the room and a metal table next to it. KEN (O.C.) Stop on the X. Await instruction. Ed looks down at the floor, a yellow square of duct tape with an X in the center sits in front of him. Ed takes a step forward and pauses on the marker. KEN (O.C.) Place the package on the table. Ken comes in from a side room to Ed’s right holding a black case. He opens it, addressing Ed... KEN Take off your clothes. ED Excuse me? KEN Hurry up, I’m behind schedule. �� (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 17. ED uh. Alright. KEN Put them in the bin. Ed unbuttons his shirt, and drops it in a clear tub on a table next to him. He continues with his pants. ED Can I ask- KEN Decontamination. Hold up your arms. Ed holds up his arms, Ken throws white powder over Ed’s body. ED Christ! It burns! KEN Delousing agent. Step in the shower. Ed half blindedly stumbles into the glass case in the corner. Before he can turn, burning hot water pours out of the spout. ED Ahh! KEN Open your eyes, let the water clear the agent. After a few moments the water cuts out. Ed steps out of the shower, red and panting. KEN (O.C.) Clothes on the exam table, put them on, then return to the X. Ed fumbles putting on the clothes, a dark pair of slacks, a black tie, and a white short sleeve button down, the same as Ken’s. Then slinks back to the X. KEN Go to the door on your right. Ed walks to the door, it opens as he steps in front of it.

18. INT. TRAILER - NIGHT Around Ed appears to be a retrofitted trailer with an array of scientific instruments, printers, and screens with varying readouts. Ken is standing at one of the printers reading a string of printer tape that is sorting itself into a cardboard box. KEN Why are you late? ED You aren’t exactly the easiest person to find. KEN Place the package in the tote to your right. Ed opens his duffel bag sitting on the table, retrieving the black box from the bottom. He places it in the clear tote and slides it toward Ken. KEN Thank you. Your payment will be at the specified drop site. Be on time to ensure it does not get picked up by anyone else. Exit through that door. Your discretion is appreciated. Ed points to the black case. ED Is, does that have to do with the storms? Kens eyes dart to Ed’s. KEN What do you know about the storms? ED So it is the storms. KEN What do you know!? ED I don’t know! I just drove through one! (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 19. KEN You drove into it? Good god, how’s your vision? ED I feel alright. Ken stares at Ed for a long moment. KEN Tell me what you know. Sit down there. Ken motions to a small swivel chair near one of the desks. Ed sits down, Ken meets him with a tape recorder. Ken flips the recorder on. KEN March, 3rd, 1977. State your name and age for the record, ED Edward Druyan, 26. KEN Describe the event in detail. �� ED Well. I was traveling north, it was about 11:00. I stopped at a diner. Then continuing I ran into a heavy bank of fog. When I came out of it I was. I was somewhere else. KEN Describe it if you would. ED It was like, nothing I’d seen. Maybe in the movies. But it wasnt like a movie. I was in space. I saw. I saw planets and stars. And then my radio started acting up. KEN Tell me about the radio. ED It’s a good radio, mostly listen to games on it.AM/ FM I think. (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 20. KEN What happened with it!? ED At first it was jumbled, but there was music and voices. None of it sounded familiar, and then. I heard. Something. KEN What? ED Johnny Be Good. KEN What? ED You know; da ninninini nini deh da na nininini ninini ni KEN Ah. Ken turns off the recorder. ED I know it sounds crazy but it was clear as a bell. And then it came back at me all jumbled up again. Ken stands and walks toward one of his instruments. ED Look man, I had to go through some shit to get this thing to you. I know what I saw. You wouldnt even ask if you didn’t also think there was something weird about this fucking place. KEN Come with me. Ken grabs the black box that Ed delivered. He walks over to a bank of equipment and opens the box. He removes a... INSERT: A golden lazerdisc Ken places it in a discplayer and flips a switch. Familiar sounds of nature and people and music play. Ken stops the record. (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 21. KEN Something like this? ED Yeah yeah, thats before it got all switched around! KEN This is a digitized copy of the golden record from Voyager 1. Ken walks over to a computer and taps a couple keys. KEN It’s a probe we launched into space to study the solar system. ED Okay so? Walking back over to the record he flips a switch, the sounds have been converted to an 8bit sounding playback. KEN Voyager is more than that. It’s a message. This is that same record played back at basic binary. ED I don’t get it. KEN You wouldn’t. But wait. Ken walks over to the printer and rips off a section of page and feeds it into a reel attached to a synthesizer. KEN If you break an audio file into binary, you suddenly have a cipher. He flips a switch. A string of horrific sounding binary notes play out of the synthesizer. He pauses it. KEN That was a string of binary I pulled from the storm last night. Ken returns to the computer, taps a couple keys, presses a button on the lazer disk player, and syncs up the synthesizer to the player. (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 22. KEN When you overlay the binary code with the audio files from the record... Ken presses a button... The sounds of the voyager record are played to the beat and edit of the printout. Reproducing the sounds from Ed’s Radio. ED That’s it! That’s what I heard! KEN That’s what I thought. Since then it’s been coming in repeating streams. ED So you know what it is? KEN I don’t know exactly what it’s saying, that will take time, but I think I know where it’s coming from. ED From the storms right? KEN Partially. If you’re the receiver, and the sender were your neighbor next door. The storms is the string that runs between your tin can telephones. ED Where does that put the neighbors? KEN Jupiter. ED Jupiter? KEN Voyager 1 launched September ’77, with course corrections and diversions that puts her within several hundred thousand miles on either end of Jupiter by the time (MORE) (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 23. KEN (cont’d) we received our first transmission of this message. ED If Voyager had the record, who had the sign? KEN What sign? ED It was like a gold plaque with a man on it and a map. I found it after the storm. - Beat - KEN Pioneer. Thunder shakes and rattles the trailer. ED It’s here! KEN Brace yourself! The trailer rattles and rolls, instruments begin blaring. Printer tape and seismometers spit mountains of data. KEN The record! ED Jerry! Ken runs to the disc player and ejects it. Placing the lazer disc back in its case. Ed searches around the room for a cb radio. Finding one, and tuning it to Jerry’s frequency. ED Jerry, come in Jerry! Radio static... ED Jerry if you can hear me, get out of there! (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 24. Radio static...The trailer rocks hard..sending Ken and Ed Down. Alarms from computers blare off. KEN Oh thats a lot of data! The trailer settles after a moment. A pen floats out of frame. KEN Take a look. Ed walks to a slatted window and peers out. EXT. SPACE - NIGHT The silver airstream floats in the abyss. Far away planet Earth seems below them. INT. TRAILER - NIGHT Ed turns to Ken, who has made his way to a monitor and is reading data. KEN How bad is it? The readouts showed a massive power transfer. Ed walks over to a chair and plops down. ED Hard to say, really. �� KEN What? Ken walks to the window and peers out momentarily. KEN My lord! Ken shuts the slats and walks over to a desk and plops down in a chair. ED This part took a while last time. The two continue sitting.

25. EXT. TRAILER - NIGHT The trailer sits against a backdrop of stars, an unlikely yet capable space vessel. INT. TRAILER - NIGHT Ken is feeding a string of data tape into the the synthesizer, Ed lies back with his feet kicked up on a desk. ED Tell me about Pioneer. Ken continues fumbling with equipment, tapping codes into a computer. KEN Pioneer 11, actually. I worked on that mission. Ed sits upright in his chair. KEN It paved the way for voyager. Gave us out first close up views of our planetary neighborhood. ED What about the plaque? KEN Cave paintings. We were here, this is us. ED Why did I get it then? KEN You wouldn’t know, it was kept top secret. But there was, an anomaly. We were performing a maneuver to slingshot Pioneer out of the solar system, when something affected the gravity surrounding it. Pulled it off course. We regained control of it, of course, but there’s been speculation as to the cause. ED So maybe, its not coming from jupiter. (CONTINUED)

CONTINUED: 26. KEN Maybe not. But let’s see what can find out. Ken flips a switch on his recorder, then on the synthesizer. The golden record remixes and plays out a new string of sounds

Crashland was released in 2016 and it’s already among the best Android games ever made. It features an intergalactic trucker that ends up crash landed on an alien planet. Minecraft is a popular game all around the world for people of all ages. For those who have never played, Minecraft puts you in a giant world where you mine stuff, build stuff, beat up bad guys, and do pretty much whatever you want. There is a survival mode where you must mine your own resources and food along with a creative mode that gives you unlimited everything. Frequent updates have added tons of new content and possibilities. The game is pretty much on par with its PC and console counterparts. In fact, you can play on multiplayer servers with people on those platforms. Nifty. There are in-app purchases, but they’re usually just for customization things like skin packs.

Monument Valley 1 and 2

Monument Valley returns to the list with the release of Monument Valley 2. Both games are still very excellent. In fact, they both have virtually identical game play mechanics and graphics. The player adventures through Escher-style puzzles where levels are movable to complete the path using illusions. The premise is still charming and the Monument Valley franchise continues to stand as a couple of the best mobile games ever. Noodlecake Studios is one of the most unique developers of Android games. Their titles are vast and varied. Some excellent titles from this studio include Framed 1 and 2 for puzzle games, Alto’s Adventure for infinite runners, realMyst and its sequel for more hardcore puzzle fans, Wayward Souls for action-adventure fans, Island Delta for shooter fans, Mikey Shorts for platform fans, and many more. Pokemon Go exploded onto the mobile gaming scene in July 2016 and immediately became of the best Android games ever. It’s an augmented reality game similar to Ingress where you walk around the real world, catch Pokemon, battle for Gyms, and hit up Pokestops to restock on items. It beat virtually every record in the books as the world’s most popular mobile game. Thanksfully, the game gets frequent updates. The updates add limited time events, new Pokemon, and new mechanics. It’s not the same game that came out in 2016. Its evolution will continue as long as Niantic wants it to.

Riptide GP series

Price: $2.99

The Riptide GP games are perhaps the best racers available in all of Android gaming. The latest title is Riptide GP Renegade. In this one, you’ll play as a racer who loses their credentials after getting caught in an illegal street race. You’ll battle your way back to the top from there. The game features good graphics, simple controls, fun tricks, and a boost system to help you gain an edge. Perhaps the best part about Renegade is that it’s a pay-once game so there are no ads and no in-app purchases to screw things up. In fact, all three games in the series so far have been pay-once, although Riptide GP2 does have optional in-app purchases if you want to max out your stuff faster (which you can do yourself with a bit of grinding).

Rockstar Games titles

Rockstar Games has a fairly decent selection of games. Some of them are ports and others are made-for-mobile titles. On the port side of things, you have classic games like Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas. Topping that off is Bully, an open world adventure game that revolves around a school student. They also have Max Payne Mobile, GTA: Liberty City Stories, and GTA: Chinatown Wars. Rockstar has always had a good reputation for creating fun, open world games and that holds true on mobile as well.

Rollercoaster Tycoon

Price: $5.99 / $5.99

Rollercoaster Tycoon is a port of the classic PC game from way back when. It’s one of one of the few simulation games that isn’t riddled with in-app purchases. For those who don’t know, the game will have you building amusement parks. You must design each park, build rollercoasters, set up shops, and figure out ways to bring people in, keep them happy, and keep spending their money. The original purchase comes with the entire base game along with Rollercoaster Tycoon 2. Additional DLC packs are available as in-app purchases.

Square Enix games

Square Enix is one of the few “big name” developers that took mobile gaming seriously from the start and they have some of the best Android games available anywhere. Fans of jRPG games have remakes of Final Fantasy 1-7 and 9, seven Dragon Quest games, Chrono Trigger, and the Chaos Rings series to play and they’re all really good. Hitman: Sniper, the original Tomb Raider, Deus Ex Go, and Lara Croft Go round out a decent selection of puzzle games. You have Heavenstrike Rivals and Final Fantasy Tactics: WotL for tactical RPGs, Secret of Mana for an action RPG, and the Deus Ex series for strategy shooter enthusiasts. Even their freemium efforts, such as Final Fantasy Brave Exvius and Mobius Final Fantasy are pretty good.

Telltale Games are the undisputed masters of the episodic adventure game genre and they have the chops to prove it. They have several games in their arsenal right now and they are The Walking Dead seasons 1,2, and 3 along with the standalone Michonne game, Game of Thrones, Tales from the Borderlands, two Batman games, a Guardians of the Galaxy game, The Wolf Among Us, and Minecraft: Story Mode. These games all revolve around similar point and click mechanics. They also have stories that change based on player decisions. Each game has five total episodes. You get the first one upon downloading. The rest are available as in-app purchases. Some of their newer games had rough starts, though, so do beware of that.

The Room series

The Room is a trio of puzzle games and among the first that did it really well. The latest game in The Room series is just as big of a hit as its predecessors and they remain among the best Android games. The Room is a series of escape puzzle games. Each room has bunch of mysterious objects. Your goal is to solve the puzzles and get out. You progress from room to room to find even more unique objects and solve their puzzles until you win the game. The third one includes cloud saving, multiple profiles, alternate endings, and the same beautiful puzzles and graphics that drove people to play the first two titles. There are also no in-app purchases.

This War of Mine

Price: $14.99

This War of Mine is so good that we awarded it the best game released in 2015. In this survival game, you lead a crew of civilians in a city torn apart by war. You’re tasked with making difficult decisions that have heart wrenching results with survival being the key. It comes with good graphics, plenty of content, and a hefty price tag with no in-app purchases. You start your play at night or during the day. Each play will bring you something a little different. It’s one of the deeper Android games that can really get the emotions going.

Unkilled

Price: Free with in-app purchases

UNKILLED is the latest zombie shooter from MADFINGER Games, the same developers that brought us such Android games as Dead Trigger 2 and Shadowngun. In fact, UNKILLED has replaced Dead Trigger 2 as the best zombie shooter on Android right now. It features great graphics, over 300 missions to complete with boss fights, various weapons and things to unlock and upgrade, online PvP modes, and the graphics get even better if you’re using a Tegra X1 device. There is also a push from developers to make the PvP more expansive and enjoyable. Yes, it’s a freemium game but it’s a definitely a good one.

Vainglory

Price: Free with in-app purchases

Vainglory is probably the best MOBA available on Android. It features a large cast of characters along with a fairly traditional MOBA experience. You’ll have your typical three lanes that you’ll need to attack or defend along with two teammates. You can play with or against real people or bots if you want to. The performance is top notch and there are over two dozen characters that you can unlock. There are also no energy bars or other freemium hoops to jump through. There is also a beta available that can use the Vulkan API, although it’s not quite stable yet.
